Remembering Charlie Monk

Colleagues and friends share their memories of the late Mayor of Music Row.

Townsquare Pres./Local Programming Kurt Johnson: “Charlie saw the humor in everything, including himself. And he never missed an opportunity to tease me – ideally in public. The night of his Country Radio Hall of Fame induction, he walked up to me and couple other people and noticed my trendy new footwear. Charlie: ‘Where’d ya get those shoes?’ Me: ‘Nordstrom.’ Charlie: ‘Take ‘em back.’ Then, he walked away. How could you not love him?”

Cooped Up Records CEO Victoria Shaw: “Charlie was one of the first people I met in Nashville. He set me up with some big dogs to write and let me use his office to make tape copies and calls. We talked a lot about [his wife] Royce and his kids, and he started calling me his third daughter. Fifteen years ago, I asked if he knew of any office space for rent, and he referred me to a woman whose office was two houses down from his. That woman was Leslie DiPiero, who not only became my landlord but my sister, my kid’s aunt and my dearest friend. Once again, Charlie had helped change my life.”

UMGN EVP/Promotion Royce Risser: “Right outside the Opryland Hotel’s Pickin’ Parlor, CRS 1992: ‘I’m Charlie Monk, and you are...?’ We talked for over an hour. He was so kind, interested in my backstory and predicted how I would fare in the music industry. I’m guessing he was doing this with many people, but it meant so much that he expressed confidence in me. He always warned me not to get too attached to the corporate credit card, I guess because he saw too many people lose their way by abusing it. I’ve never forgotten that. For about five years, he’d ask me to his office before CRS to run jokes by me making sure they were funny but not too harsh. I got to pick a few people to target. That was fun.”

Consultant Mike McVay: “I was in New York City and hopped into the back of a sedan. The driver had on SiriusXM’s Willie’s Roadhouse. Charlie Monk was hosting the morning show.

Leaders mostly hold serve in fourth quarter dayparts, but leaps abound elsewhere in the rankings. As always, Nielsen PPM figures are Persons 6+.

Mornings: With morning drive clearance in 17 PPM markets, The Bobby Bones Show remains firmly atop the cume rankings. The show was up slightly (50,100) from Q3 with a cume of just more than 1.3 million. KKBQ/Houston’s Q Morning Zoo with Erica Rico and Katelyn Maida finishes in second place with 325,000 (Andy Riggs joined the show during the final week of the quarter). WUSN/Chicago’s Melissa McGurren and Austin Huff slip to third with a cume of 292,600, despite an increase of 4,200. An impressive 3.7 share jump takes WCOL/Columbus’ Wakeup Call with Zuko & Kayla from a 10th-place tie last quarter to second in Q4. That pushes KSOP/Salt Lake City’s Dave Gunderson & Deb Turpin to third. WSIX/Nashville’s airing of The Bobby Bones Show places fourth, while WPAW/Greensboro rounds out the top five.

Afternoons: Despite not having a permanent host for most of the quarter, KKBQ/Houston increased its afternoon drive cume by 28,500 to claim the top spot with 429,500 listeners. Caitlin “CJ” Johnson hosted the daypart until mid-September; Lo Sessions took over during the last week of the quarter. KKBQ’s rise pushes WUSN/Chicago’s Scotty Kay to second with a cume of 387,000. Houston is also represented in third with KILT’s Nick Russo. Fourth place belongs to Christine Martindale of KKGO/Los Angeles, and KSCS/Dallas’ Al Farb is fifth.

Just as in morning drive, WCOL/Columbus saw big gains in the quarter, and afternoon host Brandon “Boxer” Nasby ’s 2.1 share jump gave him the largest share in afternoons, topping previous leader WQIK/Jacksonville WCTK/Providence ’s Kevin Lawrence slips to third, while WPAW/Greensboro (which wasn’t in the top 10 last quarter), and KEEY/Minneapolis make up the remainder of the top five. Remembering Charlie Monk

(continued from page 1)

I commented that I knew the host. The young man driving extoled how much he loved listening to Charlie – his knowledge of music, wit and on-air style. He then asked questions – all the things serious fans ask about celebrities. I shared the story with Charlie when I next saw him. He smiled that wry smile, gleam in his eyes, and said ‘I resemble that.’”

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum SVP/External Affairs

Lisa Purcell: “In September, Charlie called to advance his attendance at The Western Edge exhibit opening. This was a common practice. He asked, ‘Would there be any famous people at this event’ besides himself. After laughing out loud, I shared the listing of musical luminaries. He quickly turned the conversation from fun-filled fact finding to an expression of deep appreciation for the opportunity to congregate and celebrate the music we love.”

Consultant John Shomby: “My first CRS as a board member, Charlie wanted me to understand that my board lanyard was an all-access pass to anywhere in the seminar ... so he escorted me everywhere to cement that in my head. I was amazed that a guy with his stature in the business would take that amount of time with some new board member. It was his way of instilling pride in being a part of the board. Mission accomplished.”

Records EVP/Promotion & Commercial Strategy Josh Easler: “Shortly after I got the VP job at Arista, I was shopping at Goodwill in Berry Hill. I ran into Charlie, and we had a nice laugh about shopping there. When we parted ways, he said, ‘I won’t tell anyone you shop here if you won’t tell on me,’ to which I agreed. Whenever I saw him after that, he would ask if I bought whatever I was wearing at Goodwill. We both came from modest roots, and we had a great bond over shopping at Goodwill even when we didn’t have to.”

Cartoonist Guy Gilchrist: “When I first got [to Nashville] as a singer/ songwriter, Charlie immediately told me if I ever needed a place to sleep or a bite to eat, I didn’t have to even call him –just show up. Later, I would feature him in Nancy when I was creating that [comic strip], and he loved it! I expect him to post a picture of him and Jesus on his Facebook page tomorrow.”

Industry vet Bob Reeves: “I had lunch with Charlie and [publicist] Zach Farnum in Green Hills. They walked in late, and just as Charlie sat down in the booth, [Country Music Hall of Famer] Brenda Lee walked past. When she saw Charlie, she lit up, and so did he. They both turned on the charm and started chatting and cackling like a couple of barnyard chickens. That restaurant

came to a 30-minute standstill while the two of them traded stories – and no one complained. After all, it was Little Miss Dynamite and the Mayor of Music Row!”

SESAC VP/Creative Services Shannan Hatch: “We asked Charlie to be our caddy for the Music Row Ladies Golf Tournament. We didn’t tell him what our costumes were going to be, but we had planned our angel costumes and brought devil horns for Charlie. He showed up in all red! He called us his angels from then on.”

Consultant Joel Raab: “At my first CRS, I was told not to miss his New Faces Show monologue, [at which] I quickly learned who the major players were. He was so tall and debonair on that small stage at the Airport Hilton, and I felt intimidated to talk to him. He later said he thought I was stand-offish. Fair enough. Toward the end of his life, we confided about a lot of issues confronting our industries – not always agreeing, but always with respect and love. We recently vowed to speak more often, as friends often do. That next time and place will have to wait.”

Grand Ole Opry Exec. Prod. Dan Rogers: “This past summer, he happened to come backstage the same night as Nashville Mayor John Cooper. On hearing that the mayor was in dressing room No. 1, more than

one person stopped by expecting to see the Mayor of Music Row and instead found our city’s top elected official! Charlie got a huge kick out of that.”

Turner WZBB/ Stanleytown, VA PD/ midday personality Robynn Jaymes: “At the 1995 Gavin Convention, Charlie emceed the awards ceremony where I won for medium market DJ. I had lost my dad and gave an emotional speech about loving your parents while you still have them. The last thing I said was, ‘This is a great time to be a woman in country music – even Jaye Albright couldn’t resist!’ Charlie roared with laughter, as did the audience and Jaye. I looked at him and said, ‘I know I should have given you that line,’ and he said, ‘No, you delivered it perfectly, and I am proud of you!’”

Capitol Dir./Northeast Promotion Annie Sandor: “We were sitting next to each other at a CRB Board meeting in 2015, and Charlie was scribbling away. A few minutes later, he handled me [a self-portrait] and simply said, ‘I love you, Annie. Ain’t I the most handsome man you’ve ever seen?’ Yes, Charlie Monk. You are the most handsome man I have ever seen. And I love you, too.”

CRB/CRS Exec. Dir. RJ Curtis: “A lot of people who only saw the performer/personality side of Charlie Monk, particularly as host of the New Faces Show, may not fully appreciate how deeply he cared about CRS and how much serious work he contributed. His emotional investment in CRS never waned. March of 2023 will mark the first-ever CRS without Charlie Monk in attendance. He will be conspicuous by his absence, which I know would make him proud.”

UMG/Nashville Chairman Mike Dungan: “At the gates of heaven: ‘I’m Charlie Monk. You might have heard of me.’”

December 2022 PPM Scoreboard

The December 2022 PPM Book (11/10/2212/7/22) saw Country total shares slide 4.7% month to month, from November’s 348.3 to 332.0 as the arrival of Christmas music on competing AC stations started to exact its annual toll. However, year-to-year shares were up 5.4% from last December’s 314.9. Bucking the trend, WCOL/Columbus jumped a full share from last month; its 10.1 share was a full share larger than any other Country station and put WCOL atop the format for the

Station/City

first time since July 2021. December cume for all stations was 22,744,300, off 6.3% from November but up 0.6% from last December. KKBQ/Houston had the format’s largest cume for the fourth consecutive month. Legend: A “+” indicates a Classic Country outlet; a “^” designates co-owned Country stations in the metro; a “t” indicates a tie; and a “*” indicates a station that is a recent subscriber for which ratings were not currently available.
