MSBC: If The Boot (Camp) Fits

Last week’s (8/10-11) 35th annual Morning Show Boot Camp (MSBC) offered attendees almost a dozen sessions focused on a wide range of topics of interest to personalities, from contract negotiating to social media. But the camp’s biggest buzz wasn’t a personality at all. At least not a human one.

Art(ifice) & Commerce: A.I. first came up in a one-on-one interview with iHeartMedia Chairman/CEO Bob Pittman. “Anybody who uses A.I. on-air is a fool,” Pittman told The Woody Show host Jeff “Woody” Fife. “Once you lie to the audience, you lose their trust.” Pittman later added he could envision the use of A.I. for things like sales proposals, music scheduling, or “recording 400 tags of a spot for different markets.”

“Doing a thousand tags is a timesaver,” iHeartRadio Pres./ Programming Operations & Digital Music Jon Zellner reiterated in the next day’s “Game Changers” panel. “But once A.I. is doing middays, then we have a problem. With the exception of Jack FM’s, there is not one jockless daypart on any of our stations. We sound as live and local as possible with the technology we have.”

“Strong talent is 100% the lifeblood of radio,” added Futuri SVP/Strategic Marketing & Brand Development Zena Burns, whose company rolled out its RadioGPT A.I. service earlier this year. “There are a lot of lackluster unmanned dayparts with stale trackers or all sweepers where A.I. can create more relevant content around live talent.”

“A.I. can’t create an emotional bond with the audience yet,” remarked Beasley Chief Content Officer Justin Chase “It can’t raise millions of

Q2 CDM Drivetime Leaders

Following last month’s analysis of the format’s Q2 drive-time leaders in PPM markets, Country Aircheck has also compiled Country’s top performers from Nielsen’s 45 Continuous Diary Measurement (CDM) markets.

WZZK/Birmingham ’s Rick & Bubba pulled an 11.8 share, good enough to put them back into the format lead after slipping to eighth in the last quarter. The Bee Morning Coffee Club on WBEE/ Rochester – with Terry Clifford , TJ Sharp and new member Bo Jaxon – saw a 7.4 to 11.0 jump to place second for Q2. Holding steady in third is WHKO/Dayton ’s New Country Mornings with Nancy Wilson and Aaron “Woody” Woods . Fourth place is held down by The Bobby Bones Show’s airing on WBBS/Syracuse , while the show’s WRNS/Greenville, NC version slides from first place last quarter to a fifth place tie.

WIVK/Knoxville was the leader in total week share with an 11.4, and it led in afternoons as well. Gunner leads the format with a 12.2 share,

OFF THE RECORD

Newly named Beasley WKML/Fayetteville, NC APD/Afternoon host William Casey Atkins (CAT 7/25) goes Off (The Record):

My mom kept it on [WQDR/Raleigh] every morning when driving me to school. That was really my first glimpse into the world of radio personalities. I remember thinking Mike Wheless was the funniest dude in the world, and it blew my mind when I got the chance to work with him so early in my radio career.

After graduating in 2015, I was able to find work as a board op for WFJA & WWGP/Sanford, NC. I mainly fired off local spots during game day broadcasts and took transmitter readings. Although one time I did get to go on-air for a live update on school closings. What a rush!

If I could write a letter to me before starting that first job, I’d probably tell him to take a deeper look at the automation, the programming software, anything he could get his hands on in his downtime. I was so in my head about doing the exact job I was given that I didn’t allow myself to explore all the components of radio that I’d need to know down the line. Thankfully, I’ve been able to pick up more knowledge through the years, but that head start would’ve been invaluable.

WILLIAM CASEY ATKINS

Elic Thomas was responsible for my first “big break” in radio. When I applied for an internship at Top 40 WDCG/Raleigh, he made the call to bring me on even after I completely fumbled what was essentially my audition. The second person I’d love to shout out is Sean Cash, who I worked with at ‘QDR for a couple years. He talked me up to the late great Lisa McKay and gave me my first big boy job in radio. I want to also show love to Mike Vincent at WKKW/ Morgantown, WV. Mike was quick to show his appreciation for my efforts and always went to bat for me with the higher ups.

It’s not uniquely profound or anything, but over time I’ve learned that being coachable with something is just as valuable as being inherently good at it. I deal with bouts of imposter syndrome from time to time, and it really balloons when I’m not immediately amazing at different parts of my job. But I’ve also found an amazing support system of colleagues who are more than happy to help me course-correct when I need it. It took me a while to reconcile with the fact that needing help doesn’t mean I’m bad at my job. Unless it actually does mean that, in which case I’m totally joking and I’m great at everything all the time.

I’ve spent the majority of my career in Country radio, which arguably has more devoted, more enthusiastic listeners than any other format. When I first started in Country radio, I was nervous about how my particular style and energy would be received. But at every Country station I’ve worked for, the community has always been quick to take me in and trust me with their time. A lot of times people who call in don’t even think to request a song, they just like having someone on the other end they can relate with. It’s a level of intimacy and kinship that is unique to Country radio.

I’m so happy Zach Bryan is finally getting some mainstream love right now. He’s an incredibly gifted artist and I’m stoked to see where he goes from here. I’m also hoping to hear something new from Eric Church soon after he gets done touring. I know it’ll be worth the wait!

followed by KXKT/Omaha’s EJ, who had a 7.6 to 10.7 increase. Megan Carter from WYRK/ Buffalo takes third with a 10.5 share thanks to a three-share jump from Q1. WHKO/Dayton’s Jake Ryan and WBEE/Rochester’s Billy Kidd round out the top five, each pulling double digit shares. Previous results here: Q1 2023; Q4 2022 and Q3 2022. –Chris Huff

dollars for charity, and as long as it can’t create that emotional bond, I’m not too concerned about it.”

That was all before the highly anticipated panel, “Dissecting the Myths & Realities of A.I.” “It’s a tool,” summarized Audacy KWJJ/Portland, OR morning co-host Nick Steele. iHeartMedia AC WASH/Washington, DC morning host Toby Knapp added, “It’s here to help talent do a better job because it’s going to do a lot of the heavy lifting.”

“I thought A.I. was a foe until I did a deeper dive,” admitted Cumulus Classic Rock WLAV/Grand Rapids morning co-host Michelle McKormick. “It can actually help us; there’s always going to be something we hate until we learn it.”

More Than Intel: “When Audio Isn’t Enough” focused on the benefits of social media for personalities. “Video is a way to help bullet-proof your career,” said Anthony Halwagy of Gemini XIII’s The Carla Marie & Anthony Show. “If you’re not engaging with your audience, you can’t expect them to engage with you.” Co-host Marie added her simple mantra is, “Don’t post and ghost.”

“You’ve got to play the long game,” said Albright & O’Malley & Brenner VP Kenny Jay, likening content generation on socials to being on-air. “Going viral is as overrated as hitting the post.” Townsquare KIZN/ Boise midday host Tori Dunn added, “Consistency is king.”

“You have no idea what the algorithm’s going to do next,” explained Townsquare KCIN/St. George, UT morning co-host Aaronee Cottam, who says she still focuses on Facebook as that’s where she sees the most engagement. “Talk to the people who are already at your party, don’t chase the people who aren’t already there.”

Midwest Classic Country WNFN/Nashville personality Eryn Cooper was featured in the “Rising Stars” panel. “TV gave me a ton of perspective,” she said of her career before radio. “I love to write, I love to tell stories, but you’re not having to go to a parent’s home to talk to them about how their child was shot. The perspective of just how fun our job is – I never take it for granted.”

“Think of your career as an asset class,” explained Workhouse Media Principal/CEO Paul Anderson in the “Negotiation Post-Pandemic” panel. “Your engagement with the audience is your currency. Nobody is going to pay more attention to your career than you.”

MSBC concluded with “Managing Your Mental Well-Being,” which focused on the toll doing mornings can take beyond just the physical. Audacy Rock KISW/Seattle host BJ Shea recalled, “A counselor once told me doing a morning show has the same stress level as an air traffic controller.”

Rewind & Review: After the event, attendees shared their thoughts with Country Aircheck: “The networking was amazing,” remarks Jay. “It was a very Taylor Swift-like environment with lots of smiles and compliments.” He also gave high marks to the mental health panel. “It was a great reminder that we are all dealing with something, and our peers can be helpful in guiding us through it,” he said.

“My key takeaway was that no matter what you’re struggling with –negotiations, creativity or mental health – you aren’t alone in this industry,” Dunn says. “We have some amazing people who are willing to help if they can.” Steele adds, “The energy of the whole event felt new and fresh. It gave me hope for the next generation of radio talent.”

“MSBC recharged my radio passion batteries,” says Cottam. “The energy that everyone brought and shared was amazing. I took a ton of notes and met a lot of great talent that helped me spark some new creativity.” –Chris Huff
