Fantasy Label Draft 2022

Celebrating its “tin anniversary,” the 10th installment of the Country Aircheck Fantasy Label Draft finds six new team owners trying their hands at constructing the ultimate record company. They are: KFGE/Lincoln, NE afternoon personality Brooke Summers; WGH/Norfolk APD/MD/ midday host Karen West; KAWO/Boise Brand Mgr. Kyle Matthews; KSON/ San Diego & KFRG/Riverside Dir./Promotions and KFRG on-air personality Dana Swearingen; Silverfish Media Dir./Programming and nationally syndicated personality Jessica

“Carsen” Humphreville; and KBAY/San Jose & KKDV/Walnut Creek, CA OM/PD “Bo Matthews”

Gutierrez. Each is vying for the 2022-23 season’s top prize, probably fashioned of tin (because anniversary) and likely purchased from Hobby Lobby.

Before season 10 gets rolling, it’s time to crown last year’s winner, KUPL/ Portland’s Danny Dwyer and his Dynamic Bunch, who netted 4,839 total points via artist No. 1s, chart position and longevity, award wins and most-added weeks. Dwyer’s winning roster featured Morgan Wallen, Miranda Lambert, Old Dominion, Lainey Wilson, Erik Powell and Stacy Blythe Waugh

Tour Launch: Combs’ Maine Course

Luke Combs kicked off his long-awaited The Middle Of Somewhere Tour with two shows at Maine Savings Amphitheater in Bangor Friday and Saturday (9/2 and 9/3). Combs made headlines when he refunded Saturday’s ticketholders – saying he didn’t feel he could sing as well as he normally does – and still went on to perform what became a free, though abbreviated, concert. Luckily, his Friday show went on without a hitch, and Townsquare WQCB/Bangor midday host Paul Wolfe was in attendance.

“Morgan Wade’s gritty-yet-ascending voice instantly grabbed the ears of the thousands in attendance,” Wolfe says of the opening act. “Her time onstage was highlighted by an electric performance of ‘Mend Me,’ featuring a dazzling guitar solo. The set wrapped with a passionate rendition of ‘Wilder Days.’”

Riser House/Columbia’s Mitchell Tenpenny provided direct support. “He didn’t waste a single minute,” says Wolfe. “From the first note to the last, Tenpenny gave his all to the passionate sea of fans. What might have been the most outstanding cover of the night

OFF THE RECORD

WACO/Waco, TX PD/morning host Zack Owen goes Off The Record as he celebrates his 30th anniversary with the station and his 45th in radio. In the Spring book, WACO had its best showing in a decade, finishing No. 1 in both Waco and adjacent Killeen.

I grew up listening to Top 40s KFJZ-AM and KXOL-AM in Fort Worth; as I transitioned to Country, I listened to KJIM-AM and KSCS.

I went to Elkins Broadcast School in Dallas and remember hearing a reel-to-reel recording of my 30 minutes on their station. I thought, “Wow, I suck, but this career is meant for me.”

L-R: Jim Cody, Parker McCollum, Owen

My first full-time job was at KCLE-AM/Cleburne, TX playing 45s. When I started in Waco, we played carts, reel-to-reels and CDs. Everything’s on computers now, and we’re about to move to the cloud.

Things are so different, it’s hard to give advice to someone just getting started. The most important thing is learning digital from top to bottom and embracing what the future brings.

My biggest on-air highlights have been our live broadcasts from Iraq, Afghanistan and South Korea with the U.S. Army.

We’ve had some embarrassing moments. I once said, “I have Conway Titty Twickets to give away.” Another time, my co-host Jim Cody said, “We are excited to take a bus load of f---s” instead of “folks” when we were sending people to see Garth Brooks in Dallas.

Speaking of Garth, “Friends In Low Places” is the one song I’ve never gotten tired of.

The first place I take visitors to in Waco is George’s Bar & Grill, then it’s off to Chip & Joanna Gaines’ Magnolia Silos.

I love to travel! In fact, Jim and I host the Zack & Jim Travel Club and just got back from Curaçao with 70 listeners. It was our 41st trip. My favorite destinations are Maui and Florence, Italy.

was a fiery, hard rocking’ rendition of Blake Shelton’s ‘Ol’ Red.’”

Tenpenny wrapped up his set with “Alcohol You Later,” “Drunk Me” and what Wolfe calls a “hot-blooded” performance of “Bitches.”

Strobe-lit darkness and AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck” ushered Combs onto the stage. “The show got underway with ‘1, 2, Many,’ featuring Combs effortlessly shot-gunning a Miller Lite,” says Wolfe. “The sold-out crowd passionately sang along as he ripped through his résumé of No. 1 hits, including ‘When It Rains It Pours,’ ‘Cold As You,’ ‘Doin’ This,’ ‘One Number Away,’ ‘Does To Me’ and ‘Forever After All.’”

It was a random act of Combs’ kindness, and not a performance, that perhaps stole the show. “Two young boys held up signs explaining they cut massive amounts of firewood to earn

the money for their tickets,” explains Wolfe. “Luke noticed and rewarded them. Sitting on the edge of the stage, he pulled out his wallet and gave they young fans $140 to repay them for their tickets. The fans were then treated to autographs and a meet-up with Luke after the show.”

Combs’ set continued with “Five Leaf Clover.” “Although unreleased, word-for-word the song was sung back to Luke, who stood onstage with only a guitar,” Wolfe says. After introducing his band, they broke into a medley of classics including “Chattahoochee,” “Two Dozen Roses” and “Ain’t Goin’ Down (‘Til The Sun Comes Up).”

“Luke was back in the forefront as he ripped into his bootstompin’ tune ‘Any Given Friday Night,’” adds Wolfe. “It was full throttle to the end of the set with ‘She Got The Best Of Me,’ and ‘Lovin’ On You.’ The crowd then erupted as Luke leaned into a cover of Brooks & Dunn’s ‘Brand New Man.’”

Combs was far from done with the hits. “There may not have been a single arm in the crowd that didn’t have goosebumps when he sang ‘Beautiful Crazy,’” adds Wolfe, noting it was a “struggle to hear Luke over the crowd.” “Hurricane” and encore performances of “The Kind Of Love We Make” and “Beer Never Broke My Heart” closed the show.

“Combs brought a superstar performance to a sometimesoverlooked market of passionate Mainers,” concludes Wolfe. “He was reimbursed with non-stop sing-along participation from a sea of fans – likely many new ones. It was a night that truly lived up to the reputation Luke has made for his live shows.” Reach Wolfe here – Chris Huff

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Justin Moore, Chris Palmer, Ashley Sidoti and the Valory promotion team on landing this week’s No. 1, “With A Woman You Love.” It is Moore’s 11th visit to the top dating back to 2009’s “Small Town USA,” which was his first and just the second No. 1 for the label. Songwriters are Paul DiGiovanni, Chase McGill, Jeremy Stover and Moore.

Kudos to Stacy Blythe and the Big Loud crew, Lee Adams, Shelley Hargis Gaines and the Broken Bow crew and Anna Cage and the Warner/WMN crew for scoring 18 adds for “Wait In The Truck” by Hardy featuring Lainey Wilson and Blake Shelton ’s “No Body.” This is the first tie atop the Add Board since Oct. 5, 2020.

Fantasy Label Draft 2022

(continued from page 1)

“First and foremost, I’d like to thank Monta and the team at Country Aircheck for putting this fun little competition together,” Dwyer says. “I’d also like to thank the other players. Looking back at my picks, I knew I had this in the bag. In the words of Luke Bryan, it’s time to raise a glass and drink a beer while I enjoy this moment!”

Last year’s league MVP, Lambert, earned 1,513 points for Dwyer; Wallen moved into second with 1,455 and Luke Combs rounded out the top three point-getters with 1,380. Overall team rankings saw second place go to KPLM/Palm Springs, CA’s Kory James and his Country Gurley Shake It For Me team earning 3,346; KRRM/Medford, OR’s Ashley Main and The Main Event landed in third with 2,865. Relive the 2021 draft here

Draft Kings: Here’s how the game is played: Each team owner selected six players – Male, Female, Duo/Group and Rookie artist, as well as a Label Pres. and VP/Promotion. Draft order for the six-round snaking draft was based upon who replied first to the invitation to participate, and each owner was allowed to select players for their open positions in any order they saw fit. A “Rookie” is defined as any artist who has never had a No. 1 as a solo artist. (Yes, the owners absolutely had the conversation and agreed upon the viability of Tyler Hubbard.) Label executives may be anyone the team owner sees fit. In draft order, the owners also selected team names, as seen on page 7 and 9. This year, despite no one ever asking for it, the team owners also took it on themselves to create team logos. The draft was completed Sept. 1 via the ever-official-and-always-dreaded reply-all email chain, with the exception of Humphreville, who was “getting her hair did” and had to be included via text message by an exceedingly accommodating but also annoyed commissioner.

Draft prep, if you could call it that, varied by participant. “My strategy was to eat five Double Stuf Oreos while texting myself my top three choices in every category,” explains West. “I got my first choice in all but one, where I didn’t even get my second or third thanks to the meddling of Kyle, Bo and Carsen. I’m coming for you all!” The “meddling” Matthews also threw shade at the prep process, saying, “I prepared like any great athlete would: I made sure to listen to the top country playlist on iTunes and Spotify. But I know one person who had to Google the record label VPs and presidents. I’m not going to throw her under the bus, but I have a text to prove it.” Humphreville described her preparation method as, “Got in my truck, drank some Steveweisers and listened to some Backstreet Boys.” She also refused to refer to her fellow owners by any name other than “Jabroni.”

Fumble And Kind: The first overall selection had Summers taking Gabby Barrett. “As the newbie to Country, I am coming in unbiased and unjaded and looking at straight-up facts,” Summers states. “I’m in it to win it. Mama didn’t raise no losers!” The remainder of round one included Wilson, Wallen, Carrie Underwood, Combs and Cole Swindell. Last year’s league MVP, Lambert, went undrafted. Among other surprises in the undrafted category, Swearingen noted Thomas Rhett, adding, “He has a Top 20 single currently, and I’m sure another single

out of the gate and pick Morgan Wallen first; however, I might have missed out on Lainey. She is the female country star of this generation – even if she does dress like my mom’s generation!”

Oddly, none of the six were willing to offer up much in the way of smack-talk during the draft, despite their pointed zingers in follow-up interviews. “I only joke because I love,” quips Gutierrez. “And I’m new here! But I did think the smack-talk was pretty tame. I brought my brass knuckles to the party and everything!” In her post-

draft exit interview, Swearingen laid down the smack by roasting each player, telling Country Aircheck, “My inner Michael Scott has been waiting for this moment! Boom! Roasted!” Though even her most pointed of roasts was too tame to merit printing in this space. Are these seriously the nicest six people in Country radio, or are they all intimidated by the commissioner? The world may never know.

Play Booked: Also to be filed in the oddities folder, there were zero penalties assessed. Nary a delay of game, encroachment, holding or false start. And, while they each believe they’ve drafted the winning team, they were also all quick to acknowledge excellent drafting when they saw it. “My direct competition would be Kyle and Carsen,” says Gutierrez. “Anyone who has Morgan Wallen or Luke Combs basically just got Tom Brady, right?” Adds Matthews, “Carsen is kind of a big deal. Having Big D & Bubba in your corner can have some real influence, and Zach Bryan is going to be a big threat ... maybe.” Humphreville, staying true to her WWEinspired character for this draft, quickly returns, “It doesn’t matter.” Which of these six will pull in the points and win the nonexistent-yet-coveted championship trophy? Points begin accumulating this week, and a winner will be declared this time next year. Critique the owners’ performances by emailing Summers here, West here, Matthews here, Swearingen here, Humphreville here and Gutierrez here.
