Nashville Heeds The Y’all

While CMA Fest usually brings its share of surprises, no one was expecting one of this year’s to be a new Classic Country radio station in Nashville. Last Thursday (6/8) at 9am, Midwest Top 40 WNFN started playing a loop of the 1991 dance song “Get Ready For This.” An hour later, Randy Travis pressed the button launching “Y’all 106.7,” putting it in a crowded field with four other well-established Country stations –iHeartMedia’s WSIX, Cumulus’s WKDF and Gold-based WSM-FM, and Ryman Hospitality’s Classic Country WSM-AM. WNFN sister Adult Hits WCJK “Jack FM” and Midwest Classic Country Format Captain Ron Allen is programming WNFN. Country Aircheck spoke with him last week about the move.

CA: How were you able to keep this flip under wraps?

RA: I’m shocked we kept it in-house. We did it quickly and once we made the decision, I really wanted to launch the first day of CMA Fest. We needed something special for the launch, and the first name that came to mind was Randy Travis because he speaks to who we are as a brand. I didn’t make the request until earlier in the week because I didn’t want to tip our hand. We told our staff at 9am, and Randy was here at 9:20. He and his wife were amazing. They spent about an hour and a half in our building taking pictures with our staff, smiling, and laughing.

Flips are always stressful, but Country ... in Nashville?

I told my staff this may be the most scrutinized launch in the history of the company.

witnessed 50,000-plus chanting his name.

“I used to be way up there dreaming about being down here,” recalled Lainey Wilson, who has been attending the festival since she was 14 years old. “I’ve been watching my dreams come true before my eyes.” Wilson’s set included “Watermelon Moonshine,” “Things A Man Oughta Know,” “Heart Like A Truck” and “Texas (When I Die),” during which the night’s opening act, Tanya Tucker, returned to the stage with co-host Elle King.

CMA CEO Sarah Trahern wasn’t kidding when she promised “more [collaborations] than we’ve ever had.” Miranda Lambert was joined by King for “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home),” Leon Bridges for “If You Were Mine” and surprise guest Avril Lavigne, who performed a mashup of “Kerosene” and “Sk8ter Boi.”

Johnson debuted with an eight-song set that included “Whoever’s In New England” with one of the night’s biggest surprises, Reba McEntire “I didn’t release [“Human”] for a No. 1, fame or money,” he told the crowd. “At the end of the day we’re all human.”

Fairchild and Kimberly Schlapman. Along with bandmates Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet, they performed “Better Man,” “Girl Crush,” “Boondocks” and “Pontoon,” among others, closing with a new fan tribute song “Friends Of Mine.”

Old Dominion continued the fan-love theme. “[CMA Fest] is the best way that we as artists … can say thank you,” Matthew Ramsey said. The band radiated good vibes with “Make It Sweet,” “Memory Lane” and “I Was On A Boat That Day,” punctuated by Trevor Rosen on accordion. Despite the heat, Jon Pardi donned a black Nudie-style jacket while performing “Heartache On The Dance Floor,” “Your Heart Or Mine,” “Last Night Lonely” and another accordion-driven tune “Tequila Little Time.”

The platform stage welcomed Ian Munsick (“Long Live Cowgirls”) and Alana Springsteen (“You Don’t Deserve A Country Song”), the evening’s only solo female act. Eric Church wrapped the festival’s third night with a six-song set including “Bad Mother Trucker,” “Cold One,” a reworked version of “Drink In My Hand” and finale “Smoke A Little Smoke,” which was on-point given the unmistakable odor on the air. To the surprise of many, Saturday offered no surprise guests. –Sarah Skates

No Rain Is A Good Thing: Inclement weather lurked through downtown Nashville Sunday (6/11) afternoon, but skies cleared around 7pm. Josh Turner took the stage 45 minutes after gates opened with a four-song set including “Your Man” and “Long Black Train.”

—Caitlin DeForest

Following Jelly Roll’s unannounced two-song set on the satellite stage, Keith Urban performed “Blue Ain’t Your Color,” “Long Hot Summer” and “Wasted Time” backed by a horn section. The blending of legacy, established and on-the-rise artists was capped by Hardy, who welcomed Wilson back for “Wait In The Truck” and was joined by Lauren Alaina and Devin Dawson on “One Beer.” More than a reported 60,000 people filed out of the stadium with the gentle refrain from Hardy of “kill shit till I die” on the breeze.

Sunset Crews: Jason Aldean’s 16th time at CMA Fest (Saturday, 6/10) offered a set that underscored his longevity, dating back to 2005’s “Hicktown” and powering through “Dirt Road Anthem,” “My Kinda Party” and latest single “Try That In A Small Town.” Aldean also set a tone for the maledominated line-up, which had kicked off earlier with Tracy Lawrence performing “Time Marches On” and “Alibis.” The only females gracing the main stage were the leading ladies of Little Big Town: Karen

Country Music Hall of Famers Alabama made a surprise appearance performing “Tennessee River,” “If You’re Gonna Play In Texas (You Gotta Have A Fiddle In The Band),” a medley of “Dixieland Delight” and “Will The Circle Be Unbroken,” and “Mountain Music.”

Following the 30-minute crowd singalong, Dierks Bentley presented Randy Owen and Teddy Gentry with the CMA Pinnacle Award.

Megan Moroney (“Tennessee Orange”) and Nate Smith (“Whiskey On You”) were featured performers on the platform stage. Ashley McBryde sang “Light On In the Kitchen” and crowd-favorite “One Night Standards” during her five-song set. CMA Fest co-host Dierks Bentley packed a 35-minute set with radio hits including “Gone,” “I Hold On,” “5-1-5-0” and “Drunk On A Plane,” which induced a mini crowd surf from Bentley. In partnership with the CMA Foundation, Tim McGraw brought out fifth- and sixth-grade students from Metro Nashville Public Schools for “Humble And Kind.” CMA SVP/Industry Relations & Philanthropy Tiffany Kerns posted on Instagram saying the performance was nine years in the making. “It has always been [the CMA Foundation’s] goal to integrate students and show the power of music ... during CMA Fest,” she said. “It took a village. A vision. And an artist that believed in our mission.” Luke Bryan’s event-closing performance began at 12:05 am with “That’s My Kind Of Night” and included “What Makes You Country,” “Drunk On You” and “I Don’t Want This Night To End.”

With Father’s Day approaching (6/18), Country Aircheck compiled a list of the most-played “dad songs” from 2022 to help with programming – whether for imaging or spiking-in over the weekend.

Chart Chat

Congratulations to Morgan Wallen, Stacy Blythe, Ali Matkosky, Tyler Waugh and the Big Loud promotion team on holding “Last Night” at No. 1 for a third week. Songwriters are John Byron, Ashley Gorley, Jacob Kasher Hindlin and Ryan Vojtesak. Wallen also moves from No. 7 to No. 5 with “One Thing At A Time,” becoming the first artist in chart history to have two solo releases simultaneously in the top five.

Kudos to Michael Chase and the Warner/WAR crew on scoring 77 adds for Gabby Barrett’s “Glory Days.” This is Barrett’s second time to top the CA/MB Add Board and comes three years to the week after “The Good Ones” became her first.

Due to an extended outage of the market’s monitoring site, KHEY/El Paso is not included in this week’s airplay data.

Nashville Heeds The Y’all

(continued from page 1)

This is obviously a saturated market and there are a lot of big-dog players that are very good at what they do. There are going to be people saying, “Gee, do we need another Country station?” We believe we have a unique product and can do some great things. I’m not foolish enough to think I’m going to start beating multi-million-dollar morning shows, but we think it fills a niche. The response I’ve gotten so far has been overwhelmingly positive. This is music I played in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s on KWEN/Tulsa. I know it well and a lot of people have those same emotions.

WNFN had seen decent ratings and, with WRVW’s longtime morning hosts Woody & Jim exiting recently, why not put the hammer down on Top 40?

That’s a legitimate question. We’ve owned WNFN for seven years and have made concerted efforts time again to give the brand had every opportunity to win. It just hadn’t taken a foothold or achieved the goals we set for it. The staff and [former PD] Joe Breezy did an amazing job. The station was on the streets and visible. But even when it had ratings success, the revenue didn’t follow.

Top 40 in general is having challenges; [the format] has struggled across the country the last few years. When I came to town, The River was predominantly second or third Persons 25-54; that hasn’t been the case the last few years. If the No. 1 entrenched heritage Top 40 station can’t stay in the top five, it’s a struggle for the second Top 40 to do that.

Did you just jump from one frying pan to another?

From a revenue standpoint, this is going to be an easier sell to clients and complement what we do with Jack and [AC WJXA] Mix. We have a lot of senior sellers in the building who are going to gravitate toward this brand. Younger audiences are gravitating away from traditional radio toward alternative methods of music discovery and that was a battle we weren’t succeeding in. We felt now was the time even though there might have been some opportunities for Hot.

Country pulled nearly 19 total shares in Nashville last month. Did that factor in the decision?

When you look at the top six radio stations P25-54, it’s Jack and Mix, The Beat [Urban WUBT] and then the three big Countrys. They’re having success in this market, and if you’re going to take on somebody, you might as well take on somebody who has ratings, right? A lot of people think our target is WSM-FM. I’m not looking at it that way. There’s a lot of space between where “Y’all” is today and those three stations. I hope to close that gap and be competitive, but my target is to make this station sound good, give listeners a good experience and have our sales staff go out with something they’re proud to sell.

You mentioned filling a niche, what is the lane for WNFN?

If a song’s not 20 years old we’re not going to play it. It’s not a hard and fast line, but we’re not going to get caught up in the game of saying we need to go younger. I understand the situation of living in Nashville and being in the heart of all this great new music. I love Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs and Thomas Rhett. I’m a P1 to Country and would love to play their music, but that’s not who we are going to be. Others are already doing that well. We’re going to stay true to ‘80s and ‘90s country with a little dip into the 2000s. Even then we’re going to stick with the early Kenny Chesney, Tim McGraw and Blake Shelton that fit what we’re trying to do.

So far, you’ve been segueing imaging in the music without adding personalities. What’s the plan for airstaff?

Eryn Cooper is going to be the “face” of the brand at this point, much like Moose is for Jack – doing personal appearances, remotes, endorsements, and working with charities and events. She will have an on-air presence doing promos and contesting plus social media. We haven’t ruled out adding traditional air shifts, but if we do that would be down the road.

What does success for WNFN look like a year from now?

We don’t have to beat people – that’s not the target I’ve put on the wall for now. I expect us to be competitive, viable and close to the top 10 mark. If we do that, we’re gold.

CHECK OUT

JUNE 16

Willie Jones Something To Dance To (Sony/Penthouse)

“The album dissects all of me: the turnt up Willie Jones, broken hearted, being a little irresponsible, bringing the party, or just realizing that all of this is a temporary moment in time and I’m growing and hopefully learning,” Jones says of his 11-track major label debut album.

Chris Janson The Outlaw Side Of Me (BMLGR)

Working alongside producer Julian Raymond, Janson’s BMLG debut features lead single “All I Need Is You” and collaborations with Brantley Gilbert (“Hank The Hell Out Of The Honkytonk”), Darius Rucker (“Every Day Of The Week”) and Dolly Parton and Slash (“21 Forever”).
