OFF THE RECORD
DropTine Music Pres./Owner Jim Catino goes Off The Record:
I grew up listening mostly to classic rock: Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, ELO, Tom Petty, Eagles. I’m from Cleveland, which was a very classic rock town. When we moved to Nashville, I discovered country music and fell in love with it ... old and new country. I loved the stories and the energy.
JIM CATINO
With my dad [Bill] being in the music industry, I grew up around music. I was constantly backstage at shows with my dad, and around artists I loved. Those memories shaped my love for the music and the business.
I was at Sony for 20 years, working for Joe Galante and Renee Bell, learning the record business firsthand. I’m so grateful for the opportunity they gave me. Early on, I loved making records and finding hit songs. I had a front-row seat to watch the careers of artists including Kenny Chesney, Carrie Underwood and Brad Paisley.
Getting the chance to sign artists and be a part of the career from the start was so rewarding. My first opportunity to sign and co-produce some hits on Tyler Farr was amazing. Sharing a vision with an artist and developing it all the way through was special.
Working at a major label was not always easy. There are many challenges, but if there is one thing I have learned, it’s that this business changes. Understanding that has helped as I start my new venture. Our business is constantly evolving ways to discover, distribute, market and reach fans, but a unique and compelling artist with great songs still wins. That is one of my takeaways from all that time as an executive at a major label.
DropTine isn’t just publishing, though we do that with four amazing staff writers: Wesley Davis, Tommy Karlas, Alex Maxwell and Russell Sutton. However, I see my new venture as a place to develop talent. That was always what I was most passionate about. Alongside developing songwriters, I’m also developing artists. I have three so far: Thomas Day, a pop artist I’ve signed with Arista/New York; Dalton Dover, who recently signed with UMG/Nashville; and a new artist named Cody Hibbard. I’m hoping as they develop and my company grows, my writers and publishing grow with those artists, as well. The two go hand-in-hand.
The biggest learning curve in starting my own venture has been … QuickBooks (laughs). I joked with my wife that being a label executive for so long spoiled me. I’m used to looking at data, numbers, business plans, etc., but I have never actually kept my own books. And, I am a creative guy, so my mind naturally tries to avoid that. However, I’m a pretty organized person, so I think I’m getting it together! Besides, my wife is the number genius, so I am relying a lot on her.
The mission/overall goal of DropTine Music is to develop great talent. I want to use all means at my disposal to expose their music and help them make fans. I’m excited about all the writers and artists, though Dalton Dover is really leading the charge for us. It’s still early, but what a great start to his career! And the passion coming from the team at Universal is amazing. I’m so happy for him and proud to be a part of it.

Agenda Committee members – and others – for more interesting discussion topics. Find out which label exec is a fan of the movie Stepbrothers, whose mother is an ex-nun, how Liverpool FC and vegan cooking are connected, which programmer is a skinny jeans expert, who’s having trouble with their seven-iron and who named their dog Merle Waggard. (Answers in order: Stacy Blythe, Zena Burns, Tim Foisset, Alek Halverson, Michelle Kammerer and RJ Meacham.)
In The Interview, Warner Music Nashville Co-Chairs Ben Kline and Cris Lacy share their reactions to being tapped for the helm by former Chair John Esposito, how they approached the transition and what their vision is for the future of the label group. “The music business in 2023 and the convergence of technology makes this a huge job with more spokes than ever before,” Kline says. “So, it’s incredibly helpful that we’re not solving the same problems at the same time because that’s not efficient. I have more respect for Cris Lacy’s knowledge and expertise in the songwriterartist-song world than anyone else. I’m super comfortable leaning into the things I’m good at, knowing she’s got that.”
“The thing that shows up is safety,” Lacy adds. “I feel safe, because I have no background in business structure or management. I’ve had some coaching and have managed, but people get degrees in these areas. Ben has managed large groups of people in several different iterations. Mine is smaller groups of creatives. I don’t know how I would do this job if I didn’t know Ben is holding up that end of it. Obviously, I’m learning that stuff, and we trade-off at times, but that’s a really good place to start.”
Also included in the issue: One other major interview with a heavy-hitter ... and a photo (or two) not to be missed.
Reblakement: Next On The Voice?
As NBC’s The Voice prepares to kick off season 23 March 6, Warner/WMN’s Blake Shelton is settling in for his final season as a coach. Country Aircheck asked readers to tell us who should replace him in the country-repping spin-chair.
#TeamBlake has won in nine of the show’s 22 seasons thus far, including the most recent. With such large shoes to fill, even Shelton himself weighed in on the matter, tweeting in December, “I’d like to throw Neal McCoy’s hat in the ring as my replacement!” Perhaps due to the power of Shelton’s ringing endorsement, McCoy landed at the top of the Country Aircheck readers’ poll as well, earning 15.9% of the vote. Rounding out the top five are Brad Paisley (13.5%), Jimmie Allen and Thomas Rhett (8.9% each) and Carrie Underwood (4.4%).
While the majority of votes came from radio and label personnel, one artist did weigh in – McCoy, who voted for himself, because he “is experienced, wise beyond his years – and that’s a lot of wisdom – quick-witted, charming and still very handsome!” Grants Pass Classic Country KRRM/Medford, OR morning host Ashley Main concurs, saying, “[Neal] is the most kind, underrated and humble man in the business with a crazy amount of talent.” The Paisley constituency also has strong reasonings to back their candidate. iHeartMedia KRYS/ Corpus Christi, TX PD/morning host Frank Edwards explains, “Brad is a great guitar player, songwriter and singer, all of which helps him help others as a coach. He also has the quick wit and great personality for a television show – he was a great co-host for the CMA Awards.”

Humor and overall personality are key components for each vote-getter, with Cox KWEN/Tulsa PD/morning personality Matt Bradley championing Allen. “Jimmie has the over-the-top sense of humor and quick wit that can attract an audience and keep them entertained,” he states. “He’s a magnetic personality that deserves a shot.” Tied for votes with Allen was Rhett, who Albright & O’Malley & Brenner consulting partner Becky Brenner says is “smart, funny, a great teacher and has multi-format connections.” Plus, adds Brenner, “His smile is good for television, and he would represent country well.” The highest vote-getting female was Underwood, who launched her career on a different reality singing competition, notes Alpha KUPL/Portland APD/MD/midday host Danny Dwyer. He says, “She knows how to navigate the industry and can give info on what she did to succeed on and after American Idol.”

Chart Chat
Congratulations to Morgan Wallen, Stacy Blythe, Ali Matkosky and the Big Loud promotion team on holding “Thought You Should Know” at No. 1 for a second week. This is Wallen’s 13th week atop the chart, putting him in a tie for 50th place all-time with Vince Gill and Tracy Lawrence. Songwriters are Miranda Lambert, Nicolle Galyon and Wallen.
In addition to holding at No. 1, extensive airplay of Wallen’s 36 track One Thing At A Time album, including two stations that went all-Wallen all weekend, pushed the title cut 45 to 36 and landed “Last Night” on the chart at 42. This is the first time an artist has had three tracks simultaneously on the chart since Nov. 6, 2017, when

release specials for Texoma Shores landed a record six tracks on the chart for Blake Shelton . ( Hardy appeared on three songs on the chart for two weeks in Aug. 2021, but two were as a guest artist.)
Kudos to Damon Moberly and the Mercury crew on leading this week’s CA/MB Add Board with 49 adds for Dalton Dover’s debut single “Giving Up On That.” This is the biggest add week for a debut artist in the label’s history.

You can also use visualization before the event to picture yourself handling the situation and accomplishing your goal. Image how accomplished you will feel! Also, allow yourself to set limits if needed. Do you want to plan for extra downtime if you feel stressed? Want to have a quiet dinner after attending panels? Check in with yourself and tend to your needs.
3. Shift your focus to others. Try to put the attention on the people around you so you can decrease the focus on yourself and feeling uncomfortable. Is there a question you can ask them about themselves? A compliment you can give? Information you would like to know about their expertise?

4. Have compassion for yourself. Make sure to treat yourself well, and acknowledge that some moments may be difficult for you, but that you are doing your best to move through your anxiety. Challenge the negative self-talk, as well. What positive things about yourself can you remind yourself of? Be your own cheerleader. Acknowledge your strengths, and look for a way to reward yourself at the end of the day. Quiet time with a good book? A swim at the hotel pool? Call a friend from home and get some support?
5. Reframe your anxiety and thoughts. Anxiety can be a normal and natural human response, but some of the thoughts and beliefs we have can exacerbate the worry and anxiousness. Start to be mindful and notice that some of your thoughts may be causing an increase in anxiety and may not be rational, like having a fear everyone will criticize or laugh at you during social interaction. Instead of considering every possible scenario, ask yourself what is probable. Most likely, other people are not paying as much attention to us nor looking to criticize us as much we think. Choose to look at the situation differently and in a more balanced way.
In addition to the aforementioned strategies, Kelley endorses journaling, exercising, adding in daily relaxation and utilizing gratitude. “And remember, the more you put yourself out there, the bigger you make your comfort zone,” she concludes. MARCH 10
Heads Carolina, Tails California: The Best of Jo Dee Messina (Curb)
Marking her inaugural vinyl release, the album features 11 of Messina’s hits, including “Bye, Bye,” “I’m Alright,” “Lesson In Leavin’” and “Heads Carolina, Tails California.”
The War & Treaty Lover’s Game (Mercury)
The 10-song collection, produced by Dave Cobb, marks the duo’s first major-label release and features single “Ain’t No Harmin’ Me.” “From the opening guitar riff to the last piano note on this record … love is the intention and love is the subject that can’t be ignored,” says Tanya Trotter.
Kristian Bush 52-This Year (BMLGR)
With its release, Bush has completed four albums with 52 songs (one for each year of his life) within the span of one year. The final 14 include lead single “Already Yours” and “New Year’s Resolution #7,” from which Bush drew inspiration for the album’s title.
