In May, with our construction project under way, we knew that we needed to elevate the name of our center to represent all we do as part of our mission and vision.

For nearly two decades, the heart and soul of our organization has been not just its world-class performances, but our commitment to arts education.

The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy, the work in area schools, and our community-centric programming are all complements to our treasured, 92-year old historic theater.

You may have noticed that we are building out both sides of our creative campus. To the right of the historic theater – our “west” side, will live the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building, which will house five new classrooms and rehearsal spaces, the Rock n’ Rohl Rooftop Lounge, and a long-awaited addition to the region’s performing arts scene: a second venue!

Up-and-coming performers of all kinds will have a new home at the Basie, with sit-down and standing-room shows in a modern, state-of-the art performance space.

On our “east” side we will expand our lobby with a beautiful, two-story glass building featuring additional concession areas and restrooms, a patron elevator, a new member lounge, and the new outdoor Basie Plaza, which will feature the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, free performances from local artists, a patio bar and more.

We are expanding on all sides to create the region’s premier location to inspire, educate and entertain.

In the early fall of 1973, The Marshall Tucker Band was still a young and hungry group out to prove themselves every time they hit the stage. “We were a bunch of young guys who didn’t know any boundaries,” says founding member and longtime lead singer Doug Gray. As it turned out, the collective talents of The Marshall Tucker Band took them very far indeed.

Today, the band records on its own RAMBLIN’ RECORDS Label (distributed by Sony/RED) and continues to release new and previously unreleased material. Still led today by founding member and lead singer Doug Gray, they represent a time and place in music that will never be duplicated. Gray is quick to credit the band’s current dynamic members with carrying on the timeless essence of The Marshall Tucker Band sound.

Arlo has become an iconic figure in folk music with a distinguished and varied career spanning almost sixty years.

Beginning in the seventies under a recording contract for Warner Bros., Guthrie helped set the standard for the singer-songwriter genre burgeoning at the time. Perhaps the best known is Hobo’s Lullaby (1972), featuring a diverse body of work. Most notable is the definitive version of Steve Goodman’s The City of New Orleans that was a hit on all major charts. Another critically acclaimed album was Amigo (1976), which includes Massachusetts, honored in 1981 as the official state folk song.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them.

The group was born in December, 1981 when some staffers for Senator Charles Percy were planning entertainment for a Christmas party.

Their first idea was to stage a nativity play, but in the whole Congress they couldn’t find three wise men or a virgin. So, they decided to dig into the headlines of the day, and they created song parodies & skits which conveyed a special brand of satirical humor.

In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s topperforming live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage.

In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.”

For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes.

In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton.

The effort proved harder than planned. However, in 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded, “The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theatre be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center.

Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him the future of rock and roll, local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.”

Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1700 fans in the theater’s seats and glass-lined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church.

Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer.

In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son.

In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to serve the people of the State of New Jersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the region.

The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey.

A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the E-Street Band.The project restored the theater to its original, Spanish-influenced 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored.

And today, the Count Basie Theatre has become the Count Basie Center of the Arts, reflecting its celebrated $26 million capital campaign and the goal of expanding the facility into a true, regional center for the performing arts. Construction is underway on the west side of the facility, with the Jay And Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building set to house rehearsal spaces, additional classrooms and the Basie Center’s as-yet-unnamed second performance space. On the facility’s east side, plans are in place to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrier-free amenities and upgrades, and the Stillwell-Larkin Pavilion, which will serve as the entrance to a new outdoor public arts plaza.

At 90 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Center for the Arts aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life.

With the advent of MTV in the early 80’s the band took off into the stratosphere, and when John Hughes’ approached the band with his film built around the Furs’ song “Pretty In Pink”, the band’s legacy was cemented.

The Count Basie Center for the Arts With construction underway on its celebrated, $27 million expansion, the “Count Basie Theatre” – the top-selling nonprofit performing arts center in New Jersey and one of the top such venues in the U.S. and world – has announced its new name: the Count Basie Center for the Arts.

“For 34 years, the ‘Count Basie Theatre’ name has been synonymous with the region’s very best in arts and entertainment,” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Center for the Arts.

“We’ve raise the Basie name to represent all that this regional center for the arts stands for: our nonprofit mission of arts and education, our work in schools and the community, and all of the excellence and excitement that comes from that. Today, we are the Count Basie Center for the Arts.”

The elevation of Basie’s name preserves the building’s legacy -- and that of William James “Count” Basie, the Red Bank native whose career in jazz crisscrossed the world and put him in front of millions, including command performances for Queen Elizabeth II and President John F. Kennedy.

Basie never forgot his roots, returning here in 1983 to perform a benefit concert purposed to build an education center at the A.M.E. Zion Church in Shrewsbury. Basie would pass away several months later in April 1984, with the theater being named in his honor later that year.

“With our 2017 groundbreaking, we began our expansion on the west end of our building,” said Tom Widener, Chairman, Count Basie Center Board of Trustees. “Building a creative campus in the heart of Red Bank, with multiple spaces and continuous activity, has long been a dream of our board. It is exciting to see this dream begin to materialize.”

A New Era, A New Logo

With the name change comes the Basie’s first new logo in decades. Called “Energy,” it was created by Basie Creative Director Andrew Musser, who worked with Basie board member and seasoned marketing executive Bob Chandler and Basie organization leaders and personnel to create the new mark.

The logo colors represent the organization’s color palate, meant to mimic the gold, blue and darker tones present upon entering the historic theater. “’ENERGY’ represents the movement of our organization from the four walls of a performance hall to the greater point of a center,” Musser says. “And within that center, performances, arts education, and a diversity of artforms synergize and foster a creative community.”

PARKING: Please observe all parking regulations and signage, do not park in private parking lots and do not block our neighbors’ driveways.The best public parking is at the Red Bank Train Station, located two blocks west of the Theatre on Monmouth Street, and in the large municipal lot located one block east of the Theatre in between Monmouth and White Streets, behind the stores on the north side of Monmouth Street.
