LETTER FROM

ADAM PHILIPSON

President & CEO, Count Basie Theatre Dear Friends, Where is the time going? They say the busier you are, the faster time lapses. That would make some sense on our end, as the Basie has been very busy! In fact, we had one of the busiest summers in recent Basie history. We had great shows - like Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Snarky Puppy and others headlining the first-ever Basie Summer Jazz Fest, plus King Crimson, Stephen Stills with Judy Collins, Blondie with Garbage... and the Basie album release party of Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul -- with a special surprise appearance from our neighbor, Mr. Bruce Springsteen. Our Education department was just as busy. We debuted the Basie’s Summer Opera Camp, where children went through a two week journey into the art form, focused around a historical Children’s opera called Brundibár. You can visit theBASIE.org to learn more about the program, including a trailer film we created to document the experience as a whole. We guarantee you will be impressed and affected by the history behind Brundibár and the work our students put in to bring the story to life. We could not be more proud of all the children who studied with us over the summer and their courage to create, explore, and to learn not only about themselves, but their respect for others. As summer ended, we had shovels in hand for an important milestone in our ongoing capital campaign. More than $15 million has been raised to expand the historic Basie facility and its renowned arts and education programs. We’re not changing the theater itself -- but the environment surrounding it will become a more exciting and accessible creative campus. Through your generosity, we have raised enough money to start the project. Our fundraising continues, and if you would like an in-depth tour or more information, please contact our development office to make for arrangements. And now it is already time for -- Holidays at the Basie, one of our favorite times of the year. From A Christmas Carol and Langston Hughes’ Black Nativity to holiday shows with Michael Bolton, Darlene Love, Melissa Etheridge and others, the season will shine bright here in Red Bank. And don’t forget December 31, as Southside Johnny and The Asbury Jukes build on nearly two decades of history by celebrating New Year’s Eve at the Basie! What a great night. We hope you and your family continue to enjoy our programming and classes, and we hope to see you again in 2018. From our community to yours, here’s to health, happiness and the very best of wishes.

It really is an amazing instrument.”

ZZ TOP

The Tonnage Tour October 24 • 8PM

ZZ TOP a/k/a “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact and, in 2004, the Texas trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of course, there are only three of them – Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Frank Beard -- but it’s still a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after more than 45 years of rock, blues, and boogie on the road and in the studio. “Yeah,” says Billy, guitarist extraordinaire, “we’re the same three guys, bashing out the same three chords.” With the release of each of their albums the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. ZZ TOP is the same but always changing.

THE CAPITOL STEPS Friday, October 27 • 7:30PM

The Capitol Steps have elevated political satire to an art form. Before The Daily Show, Full Frontal, and The Colbert Report, this Washington, DCbased comedy troupe gave audience laugh cramps with their bipartisan lampooning. The Capitol Steps began in 1981 as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize their employers, and haven’t let up since. If you’ve been keeping with the news, you know there’s no shortage of material. The troupe returns to Red Bank with a new show of musical and political comedy. It doesn’t matter if you’re a Republican or Democrat, a snowflake or a deplorable: neither side is safe from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy!

Join the Dots Tour 2017 November 22 • 8PM

Squeeze first formed in 1973, shortly after Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook had begun their songwriting partnership. By 1977 they had made their recording debut and enjoyed a string of hits. Over the years there have been solo careers and occasional separations, but the Ivor Novello Award-winning songwriting duo Chris and Glenn reunited ten years ago to relaunch Squeeze and have been touring, writing and recording together since. 2015 saw the release of the critically acclaimed ‘Cradle to the Grave’ which was written as a soundtrack to Danny Baker’s BBC TV sitcom ‘Cradle To Grave’ (starring Peter Kay). The band has long been a captivating live act, and in 2016 they triumphed on the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury with The Guardian saying they “[went] down a storm… Squeeze’s success is a pretty infectious thing.”

MELISSA ETHERIDGE Merry Christmas, Baby November 28 • 8PM

Melissa Etheridge is one of rock music’s great female icons. Her critically acclaimed eponymous debut album was certified double platinum. Etheridge’s popularity built around such memorable songs as “Bring Me Some Water,” “No Souvenirs” and “Ain’t It Heavy” for which she won her first Grammy for Best Female Rock Vocal. Etheridge hit her commercial and artistic stride with her fourth album, Yes I Am, featuring the massive hits “I’m the Only One” and “Come to My Window,” a searing song of longing that brought her a second Grammy. The six times platinum album spent more than two and a half years on the album chart. Etheridge is also an Oscar winner for Best Original Song in 2007. In 2011 Melissa made her Broadway debut as St. Jimmy in Green Day’s rock opera, American Idiot, where she replaced Billie Joe Armstrong for one week, and received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

THE BASIE.ORG

History Originally opened in 1926 as Reade’s Carlton Theater, the Count Basie Theatre in Red Bank is one of the nation’s most celebrated performing arts centers. The Basie is listed on the National Register of Historic Places in America, consistently recognized by Pollstar magazine as one of the nation’s top-performing live event venues, and everyone from Tony Bennett and Bruce Springsteen, to Ringo Starr and William J. “Count” Basie himself have performed on its historic stage. In fact, Bennett has called the Basie “my favorite place.” Art Garfunkel once remarked, “This hall is to a singer what Steinway is to a pianist.” And Lyle Lovett, a frequent Basie performer, has long praised the theater, making a point to tell his audiences “this is one of the nicest sounding rooms in the whole United States of America.” For 40+ years, Reade’s Carlton Theater hosted everything from vaudeville to films, local theater and touring productions, concerts and more. By the mid-1960s, like so much treasured, architectural wonders of the gilded age, the Carlton fell into disrepair, forgotten against the rise of shopping malls, home television and multi-theater cineplexes. In 1971, funding from the Junior League of Monmouth County and New Jersey State Council on the Arts helped create the Monmouth County Arts Council (MCAC). With an eye on preserving the past, the MCAC almost immediately focused on preserving the Carlton. The effort proved harder than planned. However, in 1973, an anonymous donation allowed the MCAC to purchase the Carlton for just $96,665 — several hundred thousand dollars less than it cost to construct 47 years earlier. A press release heralded, “The Monmouth County Arts Council has received an anonymous gift from a foundation enabling it to purchase the Carlton Theatre in Red Bank, with the stipulation that the theatre be renovated into an attractive and functional arts center for the entire county.” Along with the donation came a new name: the Monmouth Arts Center. Thanks to the MCAC and an ever-growing area music scene, the Monmouth Arts Center became viable. In August 1974, just months after then-Rolling Stone journalist Jon Landau proclaimed him the future of rock and roll, local musician Bruce Springsteen and his E Street Band took the historic stage. A year later, just weeks after Springsteen appeared on the covers of both Time and Newsweek magazines, the band returned for a performance dubbed “The Homecoming.” Decades before Bruce Springsteen, however, another area musician – jazz great William J. “Count” Basie – established himself as one of music’s all-time greats. In 1961, just weeks after performing for President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration, Basie made a homecoming performance at the Carlton, drawing more than 1700 fans in the theater’s seats and glasslined lobby. Basie made several returns in the years to follow: in 1974 for a concert held in honor of his 70th birthday, and for a 1979 performance to benefit Shrewsbury’s A.M.E. Zion Church. Just weeks after the death of his wife Catherine in 1983, Basie made his final appearance at the theater. Less than a year later, the jazz legend succumbed to cancer.

In November 1984, just six months removed from his death, the Monmouth Arts Center was renamed to honor Basie, then wholly recognized as Red Bank’s most famous son. In years to come, the Basie would establish itself as a nonprofit organization, with a mission to serve the people of the State of New Jersey by providing a broad spectrum of quality entertainment and education programs that reflect and celebrate the diversity of the region. The Basie’s Performing Arts Academy has yielded stars in music and Broadway, and its work in area schools to promote the arts in education has been recognized throughout the state of New Jersey. A monumental interior restoration was completed in 2008, funded in part by a performance by Springsteen and the EStreet Band. The project restored the theater to its original, Spanish-influenced 1926 luster. Two years later, the building’s iconic façade was restored. And today, the Count Basie Theatre has embarked on a $20 million capital campaign, with the aim of expanding the facility into a true, regional center for the performing arts. A building dedicated to the Basie’s education programs and Performing Arts Academy will be constructed, which will also house an all-new second venue. On the facility’s east side, plans are in place to create a spacious, glass-lined lobby, barrier-free amenities and upgrades, an outdoor arts plaza and more. At 90 years old and growing stronger, the Count Basie Theatre aims to be the premier center for the performing and visual arts, inspiring, educating and entertaining through its diverse and engaging offerings and reflecting the diversity of the region. As a nonprofit organization, the Basie is committed to creating opportunities for participation and understanding the arts by collaborating with creators, organizations, and schools, and as a catalyst to harnessing the economic vitality of the arts and enriching our region’s quality of life. S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T THE WIZARDS OF WINTER Featuring original members of Trans-Siberian Orchestra Saturday, November 25 • 8PM

The Wizards of Winter are an eclectic group of musicians from the Metro NY, NJ, PA region with strong Classical and Progressive Rock influences woven throughout their musical careers. One clear vision originally brought this group of talented performers together in 2010. That was to faithfully reproduce the music of the TransSiberian Orchestra (TSO) and present it in a more intimate setting. The vision quickly grew in 2011 when the band began recording an performing their own unique original material. While similar to TSO in its style, the Wizards original material is unique unto itself. The Wizards now perform a few of TSO’s greatest hits but most of the concert is comprised of their own original music. The band now has two full length albums of original material available with a third one under development for release later in 2017.

Top donors to the Basie’s campaign pitch shovels into dirt to officially mark the campaign’s groundbreaking. (CONTINUED FROM PAGE 42)

The Basie expansion, announced in October 2015, earned the endorsement of E-Street Band guitarist “Little” Steven Van Zandt and his wife Maureen, who joined the project as honorary campaign cochairs. Longtime advocates for the arts, the Van Zandts also sit on the Basie’s Board of Trustees. “To see this groundbreaking day come to fruition so quickly is a wonderful testament to the dedication and generosity of all involved, especially the great people at Citi,” said Maureen Van Zandt. “We’re so honored to help kick things off. What an exciting day for the arts community.”

Hundreds gathered to witness history as the nonprofit Basie officially broke ground on its historic $23 million expansion. Photo: Mark Sullivan

The expansion will add modern, barrier-free amenities and improvements throughout the Basie campus. On the eastern end of the facility, customers will enjoy an expanded lobby, areas for concessions and a spacious, outdoor performing arts plaza. New air conditioning and heating systems will also be installed, along with an elevator and expanded restroom facilities.

Meanwhile, artists performing at the Basie will enjoy a modernized backstage area and state-of-the art production technologies, allowing the 90-year old theater to attract bigger productions than ever before. “It’s very gratifying to have arrived at this day,” said Adam Philipson, President and CEO, Count Basie Theatre. “This is a day that the entire staff and board have relentlessly been working towards. What was once our dream is now fast becoming our reality.” Philipson added that bids for the project will be announced shortly. Basie Renovation and Restoration co-chairs Steven Schultz and Stephen Cutler have overseen NK Architects of Morristown’s design of the project, along with Ben Harvey Construction of Long Branch and M. Silberman Interior Design of Shrewsbury. “The Basie is truly touched by the support and generosity of our donors who believe in our vision and who have invested in our project to date,” said Maria Sorensen, Vice President of Development, Count Basie Theatre.“It is clear that our community cherishes the arts and the Basie’s economic impact to the region. Moving forward, we look forward to raising the additional funds needed to reach our $23 million goal.”

On the west side of the campus, the Jay and Linda Grunin Arts and Education Building will house modern, state-of-the-art classrooms and rehearsal spaces, the Basie’s expanding arts education program and a second performance venue. (Courtesy NK Architects and M. Silberstein Design)

BEST OF THE EAGLES Saturday, February 17 • 8PM

Best of the Eagles (BOTE) was established in 2012 by guitarist/vocalist Joe Vadala and a group of professional New Jersey musicians who individually have an auspicious pedigree, are passionate about their love of the Eagles music and who have all worked with numerous national touring artists. BOTE is the most exact interpretation of the music of the Eagles in America bar none! Each member mirrors his counterpart in the Eagles instrumentally and vocally. However, this is no simple copy band or impersonator act but rather a group of excellent musicians who expertly and authentically recreate the songs, the music, the vocals and the magical aura of one of America’s greatest rock bands. After selling out many venues in the region including the Pollak Theatre at Monmouth University, BOTE look forward to sharing a great night of Eagles hits, fan faves, nuggets and memories in their very first appearance at the legendary Count Basie Theatre!

S H O W T I M E S P OT L I G H T VICKI LAWRENCE AND MAMA A Two Woman Show Sunday, February 18 • 4PM

Emmy Award- winning comedienne Vicki Lawrence is one of the most beloved television personalities of her generation. Plucked out of total obscurity as a high school senior,Vicki went on to become part of the now-legendary cast of the Carol Burnett Show. “I went to the Harvard School of Comedy in front of America,” says Ms. Lawrence of her Burnett Show training. In the seventh season, and hundreds of hilarious sketches later, at the ripe, old age of 24, Vicki created her most endearing character to date, Thelma Harper, or “Mama” as she is better known to her fans. After the Burnett Show, Vicki went on to star in “Mama’s Family,” which consistently topped the ratings for its entire sixyear run of original shows. “Mama” has attained almost a cult status among her legions of loyal television viewers.
