A MESSAGE FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR I said it last year and it still holds true today. In 1981, The Evil Dead premiered on the big screen as a low-budget horror flick and introduced the world to the Necronomicon, Deadites, and a chainsaw-wielding hero named Ash in what director, Sam Raimi, describes as a “gorier the merrier” mentality. It’s difficult to explain why this B-Movie has captured the imagination, fascination, and out-and-out obsession of so many fans worldwide. It stands as one of the most cited inspirations for countless directors, writers, video game developers, and Comic Con cosplay fanatics 40 years after its release. I became a super fan, not of the movie, but of the Off-Broadway musical parody when it premiered in 2003. Everything about the musical screamed deliciously WRONG! - which is the highest praise I can give a show. The songs were over-the-top camp (just look at the song list in your program), the make-up was insanely amateurish but so funny, the hilarious one-liners seemed almost ad-libbed, but the commitment to the Evil Dead legacy, authenticity, and honoring the spirit of the movies was phenomenal. Incidentally, it was the same year I was cast in a production of The Rocky Horror Show – another infamous camp musical parody. I know that my perception of camp theatre was forever changed by Evil Dead The Musical and I began my obsession with approaching parody, camp, comedy, farce, and eventually all theatre with the same emotional honesty and serious attention actors and directors usually reserve for Shakespeare, Chekov, and Sondheim. It may seem like a side-splitting (and blood-splattering) good time in “an old, abandoned cabin in the woods” – but it’s also serious theatre. I’m grateful to the cast, crew, staff, and everyone at the Count Basie Center for their continued, unwavering support and commitment to making quality community theatre. Enjoy the show, and I hope you don’t get any Shelly on your shoe. James Artistic Director Phoenix Productions

WHO’S WHO IN THE CAST

STEVE CHERKASSKY (Jake) is excited to be making his theatrical debut! A Berklee College of Music graduate in Songwriting, Steve enjoys creating music and lyrics that reach the innermost depths of the human condition. Naturally, he doesn’t have much time to play around, but with this role, he gets to relax, have some fun, and act real stupid. He’s flexing his acting muscles for the first time as well. Welcome to the gun show! *deflating balloon sound* Special thanks to the Cherkassky family, Phoenix Productions, and my beautifully goofy girlfriend, Marisa Helene Mast, for giving me the courage to audition. HUDSON EDER (Scott) is excited to return to the “Cabin in the Woods” and reprise the role of Scott. Past Phoenix credits include: The Hunchback of Notre Dame (Jehan/Ensemble), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Issachar/Ensemble), and Guys and Dolls (Lt. Brannigan/ Ensemble). Other theatre credits include: The Outsiders (Dallas Winston) and Catch Me If You Can (Carl Hanratty). Hudson would like to thank his friends, family, and fellow stupid bitches for their continued support! MARISA HELENE MAST (Cheryl) is absolutely thrilled to be back for the Michigan State University Spring Break Trip 2: Electric Boogaloo! Marisa is continuously thankful to work in a field that requires her to embrace her inner clown, and this show is no exception. Notable roles include: Little Women (Jo March), Avenue Q (Lucy u/s), Noises Off (Brooke), Company (Marta), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (Magenta), and Dancing At Lughnasa (Maggie Mundy; Irene Ryan Nomination). Favorite credits include: American Idiot (Heather), Rent (Alexi Darling/Seasons of Love Soloist), and The Who’s Tommy (Minister’s Wife/Mrs. Simpson). Amber Lynn would like to thank her incredible cast and crew for their continuous and infinite love and support. Keep up with Amber Lynn’s hijinks all year long on Instagram: @amberlynntanzi MATTHEW TOBIO (Fake Shemp / Knowby / Moose) is so excited to be back as Fake Shemp / Knowby / Moose. Since we last saw him, Matthew has gone on to become a Perry Award nominee. Lemme ask, are you a Perry Award nominee? Yeah, I didn’t think so. Enjoy the show <3 ANTHONY VIERA (Ed) is thrilled to be back on the Phoenix stage, especially with his Evil Dead cast. Recent roles include: Once on This Island (Armand/Monsieur Beauxome), Rent (Benny), and Evil Dead The Musical (Ed).
