A Letter from Tom Widener Chairman, Count Basie Theatre Board of Trustees

Thank you for joining us tonight at the historic Count Basie Theatre. The Basie celebrates its 90th birthday this year, and I am confident that our best years are yet to come. To ensure this, we announced last year an ambitious capital campaign to renovate and grow this wonderful facility so that we can continue to do everything we do now -- but better. The campaign is off to a great start: To those of you who have contributed, thank you! And to those of you considering a contribution, thank you for your consideration as we build a better Basie which will serve more people and drive more economic activity in the area. We are humbled by the level of support the Basie receives. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, the Basie depends on the support of the communities it serves. On behalf of my dedicated fellow Board members and the talented, hardworking Basie staff, thank you for that support -- whether by attending our fundraisers, contributing annually, being a member, donating to the ongoing capital campaign – or all of these things! We look forward to your continued support as we take care of the Basie, and our mission to expand our onstage offerings and educational programs. Please enjoy tonight’s show and we hope to see you again, many times.

Tom Widener Chairman, Count Basie Theatre

THE CAPITOL STEPS Friday, October 21 • 8PM

Over 30 years ago, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom (“Don’t quit your day job!”), and although not all of the current members of the Steps are former Capitol Hill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in a total of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

over 35 albums, including their latest, Mock the Vote. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard twice a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials. The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from politicians and personalities who are not included in the program! No matter who or what is in the headlines, you can bet the Capitol Steps will tackle both sides of the political spectrum and all things equally foolish. What more would you expect from the group that puts the “MOCK” in Democracy?!

Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded

Please note: A Mavericks show is a veritable party -- audience members will be standing and dancing for much if not all the show. Please keep this in mind when purchasing tickets.

STEVE MILLER BAND November 1 • 8PM

Steve Miller was a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late ‘60s. With albums like Children of the Future, Sailor and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music-and society-could be in the years to come. Then, in the ‘70s, Miller crafted a brand of rock ‘n’ roll music that was polished, exciting and irresistible, and that has dominated radio through today. Hit followed hit in an endless flow: “The Joker,” “Livin’ in the USA,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” “Jungle Love” and “Abracadabra” among them. To this day, these songs are instantly recognizable when they come on the radio-and impossible not to sing along with. 22

Kathy Dorn Severini DBA Dorn’s Classic Images. Used by permission.

History On July 29, 1925, the Red Bank Register reported the plans of Little Silver’s Joseph Oschwald to build a Theatre on Monmouth Street. Oschwald’s theatre would be a partnership between himself, Joseph Stern of Newark, the Burns and Schaffer Amusement Company and Walter Reade, then wellknown as New Jersey’s largest theatre owner. The register noted that the property and rights of way were already secured at a cost of $21,000, with a projected construction cost of $300,000. Ground was broken on December 9, 1925 and the theatre opened just nine months later on November 11, 1926. Opening night was a grand affair, headlined by a vaudeville performer, the feature film “The Quarterback” starring Richard Dix, plus Carlton’s news events reel and a 10-piece orchestra. The following summer and fall, the plan was to use the Theatre to try out musical comedies and other shows to be produced in New York. Admission would never be more that 75 cents for movies and vaudeville shows. First known as the State Theatre (the initials “ST” are still inscribed on the peak of the building’s façade), the theatre’s name underwent two name changes early on -- first to the Red Bank Theatre, and then, to the name it operated under for over four decades, the Carlton Theatre. A later Register described the new Carlton Theatre as “a marvel of beauty, convenience and comfort.” “Outside and inside it is an architectural triumph,” it continued. “Color and light are two of the outstanding features of the new building. Thousands of electric lights stud the ceilings and sidewalls. In the center of the building is an enormous dome-like sunburst illuminated with a myriad of concealed lights. A very large glass chandelier is suspended from the center of the dome. The interior of the theatre is rich with colors harmoniously blended. The furnishing are rich in velours and velvets in contrasting shades.” A grandly painted vaudeville curtain, still in use today, filled the proscenium arch. The theatre was privately owned and operated for almost 50 years. In 1973, an anonymous donation made it possible for the Monmouth County Arts Council to acquire the building for just $96,665

and preserve it for cultural uses. It operated as the Monmouth Arts Center until 1984, when it was renamed in honor of jazz pianist, composer, band leader and Red Bank native William “Count” Basie, who had passed away just months prior. On June 30, 1999, the Count Basie Theatre, Inc. was established as an independent nonprofit corporation to maintain ownership and manage, program and preserve the theatre for benefit of the community. In 2004, the first of a 12-phase, $21.5 million renovation began with the purchase and installation of brand new, historically accurate seating. In 2008, the auditorium, lobbies and Carlton Lounge were renovated and restored. In 2011, the façade and marquee were restored and the theatre was named to the National Register of Historic Places.Total expenditures on capital improvements have totaled $12 million to date. Although the current schedule is comprised of live music, dance, theatre and arts education performances, much remains the same about the facility. Almost 200,000 people a year attend events at the Count Basie Theatre. In an age when we communicate and entertain ourselves through media that its founder could not have imagined, their theatre is still the place where people go when they want to be entertained and enlightened in the company of their community. GIVING TUESDAY NOVEMBER 29, 2016

Giving Tuesday: A Global Day of Philanthropy This year, Count Basie Theatre is raising funds to underwrite the 2017 Sensory Friendly Series, which will present sensory-friendly performances for children and their families. Often, parents of children with Autism Spectrum and Sensory Processing Disorders hesitate coming to the theatre for a variety of reasons—from loud sounds, to busy crowds, to concern about how others will react to their child. By adding more sensory-friendly performances to our annual roster, we give those families a safe, judgement-free environment in which to experience the arts.

TUNE IN NOV. 29

We are pleased to announce that The Jay and Linda Grunin Foundation will be matching gifts, dollar for dollar, to help us reach our goal of $50,000. In addition, $1 from every ticket sold on Giving Tuesday will be donated to New Jersey’s POAC Autism Services.

Visit us at theBASIE.org, follow us on Facebook and Twitter, and tune in to 94.3 The Point on November 29th to learn more and to donate
