Note From the Director, Yvonne Lamb Scudiery

Harriet Tubman Over the past 35 years as a teaching artist I’ve written multiple scripts for my students with “dreams” as a constantly recurring theme. These scripts have run the gamut from ridiculous comedies to inspirational and thought provoking scenarios. As much fun as it has been to create these little skits and mini-plays, the reality is that I see “dreams” or “having a dream” to be more exact, as playing an important role in who each of us will eventually become.

What might be defined as “day dreaming” is one common way that we all dream. While this is beneficial in developing ones creativity and expanding the imagination, it isn’t the kind of dreaming that I’m referring to. Harriet Tubman has expressed it most eloquently in the quote at the top of this page.

From the time I was 12 years old, I dreamed that one day I would be a professional dancer. There was no doubt in my mind that this was what I was meant to be. Having the dream and the desire is not enough, however. It needs to be coupled with a firm commitment to reaching that ultimate goal…your dream. In my case this meant immersing myself in daily dance classes and taking advantage of as many performing opportunities as possible. I knew that competition would be tough, and the journey not always smooth, but I also knew that I would succeed.

It is up to us as parents, guardians and teachers to guide, encourage and nurture our children’s dreams. We provide the opportunity and plant the seeds; being sure, of course, to fertilize with a strong sense of reality.

So Spring is here……Happy Seed Planting!

SPRING FACULTY 2012

Dan Cooley Dan is a director/ actor from Monmouth County and has performed in theatres in NYC/NJ as well as appearing in independent and student films. Over a cumulative 10 years, Dan has studied acting, directing and playwriting with Ralph Colombino, Joey Madia and John Bukovec. Dan is the Resident Director for New Mystics Theatre Co., a traveling teen company that performs socially relevant pieces and fights for social justice. Dan is also a teacher at Actor’s Playground and Arts Middle School.

Vincent Daniele Vincent is a musician (bass/guitar), vocalist, producer, and teacher and is currently a member of the Jersey based band, Cats on a Smooth Surface. He has recorded background vocals for Jon Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny and Donna Summer, as well as numerous television commercials.

Megan Sambataro Donovan Megan is a graduate of Fairleigh Dickinson University. For the past six years she has been performing theatre in NYC and NJ, as well as acting in independent and student films. Currently, Megan is also Managing Director of the New Mystics Theatre Co., a non-profit theatre company that tours schools presenting workshops on bullying and other social issue plays. She also teaches at The Actors Playground.

Bruce Gallipani Bruce is a seasoned drum pro having performed in the U.S. and abroad with several rock-n-roll touring outfits since the late seventies. He is the founder and director of Rockit, a dedicated live-

performance program for kids ages 8-16. As a teacher, he not only imbues his students with proper technique but also emphasizes the importance of group interaction and community involvement.

Samantha Giustiniani Samantha holds a B.F.A. in Theatre Performance from Kean University.

She is currently teaching for The Learning Experience, Charlie Choo Choo Enrichment Programs.

With a specialty in creating early childhood theatre and music programs Ms. Giustiniani is an asset to this very popular component of our Count Basie Theatre Performing Arts Academy classes.

Kate Havel Kate holds a B.A. in Art Education from Kean University and an M.A. in Dance Movement from Wesleyan. She is a dancer/ actress/singer (Sugar and Zorba off-Broadway) and has many dinner theatre, nightclub, summer stock and children’s theatre roles to her credit.

A former member of Actor’s Equity, SAG, and AFTRA, Kate studied at HB Studio, the American Academy of Dramatic Arts and The Alvin Ailey Dance Theatre in NYC. She recently retired from full time teaching.

Keith Heimann Keith holds an M.F.A. in music from The Julliard School, with postgraduate work at Westminster Choir College.

He is currently a professor of music and Department Chairperson (Performing Arts) at Brookdale Community College. Mr. Heimann appeared on Broadway in The Phantom of the Opera, and also appeared with The Santa Fe Opera, The Los Angeles Opera, The Houston Grand Opera, The New York Grand Opera and The Vienna Kammeroper.

Joan Kilcommons Joan holds a B.A. in English and an M.A. in Speech and Theatre Arts. She is currently teaching Reader’s Theatre, Creative Dramatics and Musical Theatre to the children in the Red Bank Borough Schools as part of our Educational Outreach Program.

Vincent Mottern Vincent received a B.A. in Music Education from Westminster Choir College and is currently a chorus director and music teacher for Knollwood School in Fair Haven. He is a multitalented musical theatre director, musician, composer and performer.

Marc Muller Marc is a graduate of Berklee College of Music, and is an accomplished musician (guitar, keyboard, bass, banjo, violin, drums), arranger, and writer/producer. As a musician, he has toured with Van Zant, Shania Twain, Tommy Shaw, Surreal McCoys and numerous others. He has performed and/ or recorded with Nickelback, Kelly Clarkson, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Branford Marsalis,

Elton John, Carly Simon, John Waite, Dr. John, Blood Sweat and Tears, and many more.

Michael O’Keeffe Michael has been performing improv comedy professionally for the past 20 years. One of his first gigs was with the Sak Theatre Comedy Lab in Orlando, Florida with troupe mates Wayne Brady (Whose Line Is It Anyway?)

Jonathan Magnum (Drew Carey’s Improv-A-Ganza), and Aaron Shure (producer/ writer-Everybody Loves Raymond).

He is the Creative Director of Improv Jam Comedy Lab in Red Bank. Michael holds a B.A. in Education from Villanova; an M.A. in Education from Monmouth University and as his “day job” is a reading specialist in the Wall Township School System.

Robin Oddo Robin holds a B.A. in Theatre Arts from Monmouth University and has numerous stage and television acting credits. Her passion for the arts, teaching and community have been her inspiration in the development of the Count Basie Theatre Performing Arts Academy traveling troupe which performs in senior centers.

Michelle Staffieri A local singer/ songwriter, Michelle just graduated from the Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA where she received her degree in Vocal Performance and Music Business. After several years of performing throughout LA as a pop/rock artist, Michelle returned to NJ and is currently working on the release of her new album.

Thomas Stanton Tom’s impressive career as a professional dancer, choreographer and teacher makes him a valuable addition to our staff. From ballet to hip-hop, swing dance to tap, television to Broadway ... his passion and enthusiasm abound.

Melanie Taylor Melanie has over 20 years of experience in all aspects of theatre, and for the past 12 years has shared her knowledge as a teacher at Raritan High School.

She is an accomplished and award winning director, stage manager, and makeup artist.

Melanie is theVice-President of the New Jersey Drama and Forensics League, and is the Artistic Director/ Co-Founder of the St. John’s Community Playhouse in Hazlet, currently in its 5th season.

Yvonne is the Director of Education for the Count Basie Theatre. She is an accomplished choreographer for ballet, musical theatre, opera, a registered teacher with the RAD, London and an adjunct teacher at Brookdale Community College. Yvonne has taught for over 40 years, combining her knowledge of

MONDAY BEGINNER ACTING SKILLS FOR TEENS 7-8:30PM AGES: 12-17 FEE: $275 INSTRUCTOR: MELANIE TAYLOR This class provides the perfect environment to challenge your creative energy and to see if you have what it takes to become an actor. Students will learn the importance of projection, articulation, and rhythm in speaking dialogue.

They will also begin to understand the need for bringing flexibility, endurance and energy to all actions and movements. Additionally, they will learn to layer emotion, and how to use creativity and imagination to create dynamic characters.

Learn to experiment with a variety of “choices” and the importance of acceptance. A variety of theatre games are incorporated to help students gain confidence and a natural acting technique while working on camera. THURSDAY POP/ROCK VOCAL ENSEMBLE 5-6PM AGES: 9-13 FEE: $190 INSTRUCTOR: VINCENT MOTTERN NO CLASS JUNE 21 Don’t just sing in the shower; join your fellow vocalists instead in this 10-week vocal class.

Learn to harmonize and sing in an ensemble while honing your vocal and performance skills. Students will be given the opportunity to reinforce basic breathing, posture and breath control techniques under the expert tutelage of a professional musician and educator.

THURSDAY ACTING FOR THE CAMERA 5-6PM AGES: 6-8 FEE: $190 INSTRUCTOR: MEGAN SAMBATARO NO CLASS MAY 10 This is the perfect environment for learning to perform on camera. Gain confidence as you improve your acting and speaking skills. Learn the proper techniques for working on camera and what to expect in the audition process.

Using video recordings taken during the class, students will be able to self-critique. Simple script work and the use of cue cards will be introduced.

THURSDAY SENIOR ACTING FOR TV/FILM 6-7PM AGES: 9-12 FEE: $190 INSTRUCTOR: MEGAN SAMBATARO NO CLASS MAY 10 Explore the types of shots and camera techniques that are used in today’s commercial acting industry. Become familiar with the “language” that is used on the set.

Learn what to expect and how to prepare for agency and commercial auditions. Past students have shown improvements in self-confidence, diction and focus. Students will work on camera and have the opportunity to self-critique.

Interactive Audition Process WITH JASON BERCY FROM BERCY TALENT MANAGEMENT SATURDAY, APRIL 28, 2-3:30PM AGES: 6 – TEENS FEE: $30 (student) $10 (adults) This workshop will take you into the minds of the decision makers… casting directors, managers and agents. This will be an interactive workshop and “mock audition” where participants will be evaluated and given suggestions as to which areas need additional improvement. ROCKIT!

Rockit gives young musicians an instant opportunity to play rock-n-roll with their peers, bringing them to perform live as a band and experience the dynamics of working together to achieve a common goal. Vocalists, Drummers, Guitarists, Bass Guitarists, Keyboardists, Brass and String players are encouraged to complement their private studies with our live program. After the initial audition (and orientation class) the musicians will be divided into bands and rehearse for the next six weeks. On Sunday, June 24, a rock concert will be held on-stage at the Count Basie Theatre. All band classes are 90-minutes long and taught by qualified instructors. Space is limited. Come experience and see why Rockit is the premiere rock band showcase for young musicians!

Due upon acceptance into the program.

• All students must be currently studying with an instructor or a self taught master of music.

• Students must perform a TWO-minute selection that best represents their style and ability. Vocalists may audition with a karaoke CD, musical accompaniment or sing a capella. Singing along with a prerecorded CD with vocals is not permitted.

Karaoke is suggested.

• All other musicians may audition with live or CD accompaniment, or solo.

• Students are expected to bring their own guitars, straps, drum sticks, brass and string instruments. All other equipment is provided, including a full pedal board for guitarists.

• All students must attend all rehearsals unless extenuating circumstances should occur and must also perform in the end-of-semester concert.

• SUGGESTIONS: Instruments audition with a CD track or accompaniment. Guitarists need two minutes to get through a verse, chorus and solo. Soloing is not a requirement but helpful in band placement. If vocalists decide to audition a capella, please ask us for a starting note or bring a pitch pipe.

Vocalists tend to go out of pitch without this.

No medleys please.

All students must comply with these guidelines and entrance to the program is based on their audition performance. Participation in past Rockit programs does not guarantee placement. The previously-noted requirements are necessary to insure that each child enrolled in the program has a positive learning experience.

Each band will be assigned a specific time and day for their 90-minute rehearsal class.

SCHEDULED PROGRAM DATES ARE: AUDITION: Saturday, March 31, 10am-8pm assigned. You will be notified of your child’s audition results by Monday, April 16.

ORIENTATION: Saturday, April 28, 3pm (for all accepted students) REHEARSALS: Each accepted student will be assigned to one

90-minute rehearsal time slot on a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday.
