Cottonwood Estate Final Guide 2021

Page 1

WELCOME To Cottonwood Estate

Hello

Thank you so much for choosing to stay with us. We are the Newton family and have been hosting at our beautiful estate since 2019. My husband and I both grew up in Gloucester County, owning and operating our family transportation company that was established in 1953. We started breeding goats in 2015 to produce dairy for our family, and also to help local hospitals. Goat’s milk has proven properties that aid in heart disease, neurological degeneration and also in cancer patients. Our local farm helps Gloucester County communities to strive and keep business local. Cottonwood Estate was established in 1875 and conveniently located in historical Gloucester and near Yorktown, Jamestown and Williamsburg. We are so excited to share our little piece of history with future guests, and welcome you to our home.

Rules for Animals 1. Always text the listed number prior to visiting the barnyard so that we can be on standby for any issues; 2. Due to being a working farm, occasionally we breed our goats. Although when their due dates are close, we have baby monitors in the barn, should you notice anything that does not seem normal, please call us immediately; 3. NEVER feed the animals anything than what is provided by us. Goats have extremely sensitive stomachs, so we like to be careful with what they eat; 4. Ponies only get two treats per day. They also like fresh carrots and apples, so if you would like to bring some to give to them, please limit to one of either; 5. When feeding treats, please limit to two HANDFULS per goat. They will try and convince you that they need more than that, but we have to stay strong 😊 6. If feeding or visiting goats with little ones, please allow the adults to hold the treats walking in and out. It is okay for little ones to feed the goats, but they will jump on whoever is walking around with the food, so best policy for the adults to carry; 7. NEVER walk up behind the horses. They are young and learning, so sometimes can have “happy feet”. They get nervous with kids grabbing them or running around them, so please allow him to walk up to you, and do not grab them; When giving you kisses can get a love nibble in; . They are very friendly and only attacking they do is in the form of kisses;

Rules for Animals 8. Never chase or taunt the chickens, goats or horses. They love people and we want to keep them friendly and not irritated for our guests;

9. All gates MUST be closed behind you. Goats are escape artist and you will be surprised at how fast they are; 10. If going into chicken coop, you have to close each door and gate before entering the next. Again, the goats like to get into anything possible, and the chicken coop looks very fun to them; 11. We try and keep the dogs away from guests at all times, but sometimes they sneak around for a visit. If they are a bother, please text and we will call them to the house. They are very friendly and only attacking they do is in the form of kisses; 12. There is a barn cat named “kitty” that also likes to visit from time to time. Always make sure that she does not sneak into the cottage behind you. She is very friendly, but due to guests’ allergies, we try and keep her separated; 13. If you have a fear or allergy of any of the animals, please call or text us immediately so we can monitor them during your visit. 14. Our home is a working farm for critters, only as pets. We occasionally bring in other animals for breeding purposes. We will make sure each guest is aware of the animal that will be on the property and any rules that may pertain to them.

About the Area The history of Gloucester County began soon after the settlement of Jamestown in 1607. Named for Henry, Duke of Gloucester, third son of Charles I, Gloucester County figured prominently in the history of the colony and the Commonwealth of Virginia. When English settlers arrived at Jamestown in 1607, the Indian stronghold of Chief Powhatan was located on the north side of the river in Gloucester. It was here that Powhatan built his home, Werowocomoco. According to legend, his daughter, the Princess Pocahontas saved the gallant Captain John Smith from a tragic death at the hands of the Indians, and thus, entered the pages of Virginia's history. Early land patents were granted in 1639, but it was not until after 1644 that Gloucester was considered safe for settlement. George Washington's great grandfather received a Gloucester County land patent in 1650. Gloucester County was formed from York County in 1651, and consisted of four parishes: Abingdon, Kingston, Petsworth and Ware. Kingston parish became Mathews County in 1791. In the 1600s and 1700s, Gloucester was a tobacco producing area, and many old plantation homes and magnificent private estates remain today in perfect condition. From time to time, these establishments are open to public visitation during Historic Garden Week. In addition, there are fine examples of Colonial architecture in the churches of Ware (1690) and Abingdon (1755), and some early buildings remain at the county seat on the Courthouse Green actively serving the public.

Reviews Thank you for staying with us! Danielle is the best host you could ask for! Her and her family are wonderful people, and super quick at communicating and making sure you have everything you need for your stay. The little cottage is absolutely adorable, and has all the amenities you could need. We cooked a lot in the kitchen, and even though it’s small it’s got plenty of room. The animals are adorable and friendly, and me and my wife loved going out and playing with them and giving them treats every day. You won’t be disappointed staying here!

Danielle deserves all the 5 star reviews she has received! The cottage is just as cute (if not cuter) than the pictures. Everything was clean, and the space was very welcoming. This was my first solo Airbnb experience so I had some questions, Danielle was easy to reach, friendly and quick to respond. I definitely recommend. We absolutely loved our stay at this hidden gem. The amenities were insane: fresh eggs, an alcohol menu, high quality shower products, and even new toothbrushes and toothpaste in case you forgot your own! The animals were so cute and friendly. I would definitely come again in the future!! The cottage is warm and cozy - the grounds are just beautiful. Very short drive to Yorktown and other points of interest. The hosts check in frequently to see if we needed anything to make our stay more comfortable. They welcomed our grandchildren to the farm to feed their animals. Overall an excellent experience and we highly recommend staying here.
