THE FRANCIS JOY COTTING CIRCLE Nancy and John Geljookian “When we were looking at schools for our son, Andy, nothing resonated as the perfect match for him … until we walked into Cotting School,” recounts Nancy Geljookian. “Cotting was so welcoming! Everyone was friendly and professional, the corridors and classrooms were light and airy, and the Medical Department was superb.

I relaxed. We knew Andy would be in good hands here, and he truly was. Transitions were difficult for Andy, but the moment he walked through Cotting’s doors, he felt like he was at home.”

An engaging and compassionate redhead, Andy was a huge sports fan who loved Cotting athletics. He took great pride in playing on Cotting’s basketball, baseball, and golf teams. He was thrilled to participate in many Special Olympic games. One year, Nancy and John provided Andy’s Special Olympics Cotting team with blue and gold jackets, which they all wore proudly! Nancy initiated a parent support group with the help of Cotting’s Family Support Coordinator, a group which to this day, continues to provide invaluable support for parents.

Sadly, after a valiant, lifelong battle with daily seizures, Tuberous Sclerosis, and kidney failure, Andy died in 2006. His death devastated his parents, his brother, Michael, their family, his vast medical team, and the whole Cotting community. Nancy and John named Cotting School as a recipient of donations in Andy’s memory. Over time, Nancy, John and Michael have maintained their connections to Cotting, reflecting what the School has meant to them. They invited their friends to the school on Andy’s five-year anniversary to unveil their donation of four blue, all-weather benches to the athletic department.

On Andy’s ten-year anniversary, they held a memorial golf tournament to raise money to support Cotting sports programs. Keeping connected to the place Andy loved and where he thrived has been important for the Geljookian’s.

In April 2020, while doing some financial planning, John and Nancy decided to include Cotting School in their estate. “We are pleased that we can give back in some small way for the meaningful education, the wonderful friendships, and the expert medical care Andy received during his eight years at Cotting,” John says, adding, “We know tuition does not cover the cost of a Cotting education, and we want to help contribute to that difference. With this gift, we will be helping students in perpetuity, and that gives us great satisfaction.”
