BIRD WATCH - AN AVIAN CONTINUITY ERROR Many of the newsletter’s more mature readers will perhaps recall the turring purr of the Turtle Dove. In the halcyon days between the wars, it was a familiar summer sound, a deep, vibrating call. The bird’s name is onomatopoeic and nothing to do with the reptiles. It is a migratory species present from April across Europe and the Middle East, Turkey, and North Africa, but it departs our shores in August to spend our winter in southern Africa as do so many other migrants.

These days its call is heard and it is seen only occasionally in the south and east, populations having fallen by 77 per cent between 1970 and 2001, according to the British Trust for Ornithology, However, I and several of the Bird Watch team have heard and seen numerous Turtle Doves around Cottenham and East Anglia this summer. Changes in farming practices are thought to be to blame for falling numbers, but awareness and deliberative restorative changes such as resurrecting remnant hedgerows, cultivating uncropped margins, and other stewardship practices may have boosted the food supply for this summer visitor. Unfortunately, there is also the problem of hunting. An estimated two to four million birds are shot annually in Malta, Cyprus, France, Italy, Spain, and Greece, during the migratory period, among them countless Turtle Doves. Needless to say, the bird is among many listed as having a ‘red’ conservation status.

But there is another species that may well have played a role in the falling Turtle Dove numbers. This invasive species that did not even feature in the sounds of the summer symphony in the UK until the 1950s, but today its ‘coo-coo-cooh’ call is all too familiar – the Collared Dove.

The Collared Dove looks very similar to the Turtle Dove.

It’s mostly plain, sandy, buff coloured, about the same size

as the Turtle, but has a distinctive black collar in contrast to the Turtle’s black and bronze patterned wings and its black and white striped neck bands.

If the Turtle Dove was one of the sounds of summer before the Second World War, then the Collared Dove became a more common call year round, once the bird settled and began breeding in the UK. It is a non-migratory but a curious species, it seems. Since the 19th century it has spread its wings and its range from its origins in the warm, temperate climes of sub-tropical Asia, the only region it was breeding in the late 1800s to disperse and colonize Turkey to the West and China to the east. It began to appear in parts of the Balkans at the turn of the century, numbers increasing between 1990 and 1920, then spread northwest, reaching Germany by the end of the War, although there is evidence that the spread began in the early 1930s. It had reached Great Britain by 1953 and was reported to be breeding for the first time the same year Doris Day was proclaiming ‘Que sera, sera’, 1956.

Subsequently, it hit the Emerald Isle (1959) and the Faroe Islands by the early 1970s.

This brings me to the strapline for this issue’s Bird Report –‘The Avian Continuity Error’. The Collared Dove, alongside jet airliners, mobile phones, and headphones, is the bane of production crews working on English period dramas set before Second World War. Its plaintive and distracting call was, as I’ve mentioned, not to be heard on these shores until at least the 1950s. So, if you hear its coo as Mr Darcy steps from the lake or spot one flying past Peggotty’s upturned boat-house in Armando Iannucci’s ‘The Personal History of David Copperfield’, which is being filmed in King’s Lynn (not Yarmouth), at the time of writing, that’s an avian continuity error.

‘BATTLE’S OVER’ A NATION’S TRIBUTE ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF REMEMBRANCE On 11 November 2018, Cottenham will join the nation to mark the day 100 years ago when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War. ‘Battles Over’ is the nationwide day of commemorative events marking the centenary of the end of the First World War and paying tribute to the millions killed or wounded in battle, and those on the home front who struggled amidst pain and loss to help ensure freedom survived.

CALL FOR LAND FROM COTTENHAM COMMUNITY LAND TRUST Cottenham Community Land Trust (Cottenham CLT Ltd) has been set up with the purpose of providing locally affordable housing in perpetuity for people with a connection to the parish of Cottenham. As such we are looking for sites to build these homes on. The criteria we have set for these sites are that they need to be: • near or immediately adjacent to Cottenham’s development framework; and • within easy walking distance of the village centre or a well-served (bi-directional service to Cambridge) bus stop.

Cottenham CLT is able to develop on Rural Exception Sites, and possibly even Green Belt, so such sites will be considered along with sites within the framework where

the landowner is prepared to take a lower profit in order to give something back to the village.

Details of all sites for consideration should be with us by 30 September 2018. We expect to complete our initial screening of candidate sites by 28 October; after which we will work with our short-listed landowners to develop a business plan and planning application.

PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE Crime reporting We are getting increasing amounts of crimes reported to us rather than the police; we can’t report crimes on behalf of a third party. Although it appears a lot of people are complaining on social media about anti-social behaviour, suspicious activity, dangerous driving etc, only a very small minority of issues are actually being reported to the police. The police use the calls (particularly for persistent problems) to target where their patrols are deployed. If there is an emergency please call 999, otherwise you can call 101. Don’t assume someone else has done it, better to have several calls than none at all.

Carols on the Green The event this year will be held on Tuesday 11 December from 6pm. Further details to follow but if you would be interested in having a stall please contact us. We’d like to purchase additional lights and as per last year £35 buys a 10m length. All sponsors will be mentioned in publicity materials for the event. We had a fantastic response from companies and residents last year so if you’d like to sponsor some lights to add even more twinkle to our tree please get in touch.

Armistice Centenary The Parish Council is supporting a number of activities to

be held on 11 November this year. Details can be found elsewhere in this edition and will include a “piper at dawn”, the usual Remembrance Parade and service at the war memorial, a concert and community singing on the village green prior to the lighting of our Beacon, sounding of the Last Post and a peal of bells from All Saints’ Church.

Community Access Defibrillator We are delighted to have been successful with a grant application from FECA towards the purchase of a Community Access Defibrillator (CAD) which will be located in a locked box in the telephone box by Denmark Road/High Street. This will provide the village with a 24/7 available defibrillator for use in an emergency.

Neighbourhood Plan Thanks to everyone who took the time to comment on the draft plan. There were several hundred responses to the consultation. While most of the responses addressed an individual policy issue, some responses included many more points than there are proposed policies!

The consultation was conducted alongside a Strategic Environment Assessment in which the three statutory consultees – Environment Agency, Historic England and Natural England – and AECOM company advise on any necessary changes.

All the responses are being reviewed for inclusion in a Pre-Submission Consultation Statement along with commentary, where appropriate, on how a response may have led to a modification to one or more plan policies.

Eventually, a Submission Plan will be examined by an Independent NP Examiner, who will assess if the plan is legally valid and ready to put to a referendum and taken into the Local Plan if approved by a majority of those voting.

Major Building Developments Bellway is proceeding at some pace, and not inconsiderable disruption, to construct their 50 homes of Oakington Road.

Neither Gladman nor Persimmon have yet received full planning permission for their developments, although Persimmon are making significant progress towards that.

Cambridgeshire County Council is in the process of selling its site to a subsidiary “This Land” who will develop the site. In informal discussions with CPC, the This Land team seems fairly sensitive to the problems the development could cause.

Village Hall/Nursery update Full planning applications were made on 13 July with determination theoretically due by mid-September, although late responses by consultees and resource issues can extend the timescale.

Speed reduction proposals Following on from a seven-day traffic survey carried out in July 2018 and following advice from a traffic consultant, the Highways Committee has submitted a bid to reinforce existing speed reduction measures using a combination of:

• supplementing the VAS (Vehicle Activated Sign) with a MVAS (Moveable Vehicle Activated Sign) mountable nearer to the 30mph signage • emphasising the 30mph entry point with a yellow backboard and gate feature • emphasising the “cyclists’ crossing” warning with a yellow backboard • adding more virtual islands to narrow the perceived road width, and • including a “3-2-1 countdown” feature on the approach to indicate 300 metres etc to the 30mph area.

Physical horizontal or vertical measures were considered inappropriate due to traffic volumes and the importance of the route for emergency services.

The give way feature and speed cushions work on Beach Road encountered several hiccups in the process, but are now completed. County Highways will conduct a follow up ‘health check’ in 12 months.

Lambs Lane was closed for carriageway repairs and repainted during August. Road markings are due to be refreshed along the length of the High Street by the end of the year.

We continue to chase County Highways on the works needed on Beach Road heading out towards Landbeach and of course the vast number of potholes plaguing the village. We have reported to County Highways several areas of poor road repairs and pavement damage caused by utility companies and await the outcome.

Grants available for local projects that benefit village Cottenham Parish Council offers a number of small donations and grants to enable projects planned by local voluntary and community organisations. The deadline for applications is Friday 26 October 2018.

NB: Up to the end of December 2018, we are now offering 50% discount rates for evening hire of the village hall for your birthday parties or other celebrations.

There is no guarantee of success as we may receive applications for more than our available cash and we also have to ensure that the money is only spent on a variety of lawful purposes. We cannot make donations or grants to individuals or very narrow sections of the community.

Previous recipients have included Rainbows, Cottenham Primary PTCA, Mobile Warden scheme, Bowls Club, Toy Library, Day Centre and Area Victim Support.

Applicants should give a general description of what their organisation does along with details of what any grant will be used for. It is essential that you provide an indication of the number of local residents who will benefit from your project which must generally be completed within one year of the grant. If you are successful, we require you to provide details of how and when the money has been spent in accordance with the original intentions.

DISTRICT COUNCILLORS’ REPORT At the time of writing we are almost four months into our term of office and we’ve been kept busy but we’ve enjoyed the various opportunities to meet a number of residents. Our focus continues to be on giving Cottenham and Rampton a voice and connecting with residents.

Our drop-in sessions at Cottenham Community Centre will have started again on 19 September (10:30 to 12:30).

We will be announcing Saturday and evening sessions as soon as we have found suitable venues. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page @CottenhamRampton for up-to-date information.

We’ve been dealing with a number of local issues some are ongoing but we are doing everything possible to resolve them. Here are some examples: Fly tipping on Setchel Drove We organised a visit to discuss long-term solutions to the long-term fly-tipping issues on Setchell Drove. We were very encouraged that residents engaged actively in framing the ideas. The plans are now being implemented

including surveillance and we are hoping that Cottenham will serve as a model for addressing a problem that is a blight on the whole District.

Missed bins We followed up on a couple of issues relating to waste collection. We would emphasise that the most effective way to report missed bins is via refuse@southcambs. gov.uk or via https://scambs-framwork.egovhub.net/ REPORTAMISSEDBIN/launch. These notifications go directly to the team scheduling the collection of missed bins. Any other channel will not be as effective.

Bellway and development sites The Bellway site continues to create ongoing complaints from residents about non-compliance with planning conditions including HGV movements, dust and early start times. We have raised the issues with the planning enforcement officers and accompanied them on a site visit. We have since been bringing these matters to the

attention of the contractors. Please let us know of any further problems and we will raise with the contractors and Bellway.

Given our experience with Bellway site, we are working on creating a liaison group with SCDC enforcement officers, contractors, residents and district councillors, which will hopefully improve relations with neighbours and improve compliance on this and future sites. As this group gets off the ground, we will be asking for residents to volunteer to join us so please keep an eye on our Facebook page or let us know by email if you would be interested.

More generally, we are working with District Council community engagement officers to discuss ways in which residents moving into the new developments can be helped to integrate into the existing village community.

One initiative introduced in Northstowe is a welcome pack put together by the residents of Longstanton. We will be looking at developing a similar pack with the help of local groups. So, watch this space!

Gothic House We received several enquiries from residents relating to the poor condition of the Gothic House. The owners had been ordered to carry out remedial work but failed to do so. The Council initiated legal action and the owners were fined at Cambridge Magistrates’ Court. We are pleased that the remedial work has now started - you will have noticed the scaffolding and netting around the building. We have ensured that Building Control will be making regular inspections to ensure the ongoing safety of the property.

Amey We attended the Amey Community Liaison Group meeting on June 14 and raised the problem of odours caused by Amey’s composting activity. We have since written to the operators to suggest ways in which complaints about the odour could be recorded more effectively to better reflect the extent of the problem. If you are affected by the odour from the composting activity, please report to Amey via 01223 861010 or directly to the Environment Agency on 0800 807060 (why not both!)

The Cambridgeshire County Planning Committee will consider the Amey application for approval of the Energy from Waste plant (incinerator) on September 17 at Shire Hall. Councillor Eileen Wilson secured a slot to speak at the hearing. We have posted our written comments on our Facebook page these reflect the points raised at the hearing.

Cambridge Recycling (formerly Cottenham Skips) One issue that crops up when we are speaking to residents is the state of the road and the cycle path on the section of Histon Road in front of Cottenham Skips. We have followed up with the team at Cambridgeshire County Council who have responsibility for these matters. We will be receiving regular reports from the County team about complaints received. At the moment, the complaints they receive do not appear to match the level of dissatisfaction that we are hearing from residents but there is no clarity as to how to report such problems. We are seeking clarity on the reporting process.

Lorries and HGVs Following various interventions, the issue of disturbances at night caused by HGVs disregarding A14 diversion instructions has been escalated to the Highways England Project Director. However, Highways England need help because the reports from residents are not being corroborated by their own night monitoring methods.

People living on the High St, Histon Road, Rampton Road and Denmark Road will have received a monitoring sheet where they can report incidents and pass the forms back to us. Many thanks to the residents for designing the form.

Rural Travel Hubs and Greenways We have been working with the Greater Cambridge Partnership Access to Cambridge Team to raise awareness of proposals to create a test site for a rural travel hub at Oakington. Another project, Greenways, involves cycle routes feeding into the St Ives to Cambridge busway. Locally, this would provide an improved cycle route from Rampton to the guided busway and another from Cottenham to Oakington.

GARDENERS’ CLUB

Cottenham Gardeners’ Club is a group of friendly people with an interest, to a lesser or greater degree, in gardens. In addition to our regular meetings, we have two parties, a social evening and occasional visits to interesting gardens. The club also looks after the gardens of the library and Community Centre, with regular work parties of volunteers.

On 30 November our speaker is Geoff Hodge, gardening writer and radio presenter, with a talk on Easy Gardening.

Our visit to King’s College Gardens in July was on a gloriously sunny day. It was interesting to see behind the scenes: Shakespeare in the Fellows’ Garden, plans for the future and gardens under construction. Reassuringly, almost all the grass was brown and dry, like everyone else’s, save one small square in a courtyard garden, which had obviously been watered.

The club meets at Franklin Gardens Community Room, usually on the last Friday of the month. Refreshments are available from 7:30 pm followed by a talk at 7:45 and finishing with a raffle, for which prizes are always welcome. For non-members, a half-price (£7) membership is available at this time of year, or guests and visitors can come to a regular meeting for £2, or £4 for one of the parties.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD 2018 Operation Christmas Child is one of a number of projects run

by Samaritan’s Purse, a non-profit making Christian charity whose aim is to meet the physical needs of victims of war, famine, natural disaster, poverty and disease by offering practical help, relief and an end to the suffering.

The act of sending shoe boxes is to give simple gifts to needy children throughout the world to show that someone cares.

It was started many years ago after seeing the plight of children in Bosnia and, sadly, there are still many children in various parts of the world who have few, if any, possessions, so it is still just as relevant today.

Filled boxes, donations and any contributions can be brought to All Saints’ Church Hall on the weekend of 9/10 November.

It is humbling to learn how much a simple gift of a shoebox filled with small gifts means to a needy child. Boxes are sent

THE ART OF BEING STOIC - HACK THE FEN EDGE This is the first of a regular slot (I hope) covering a broad range of topics, but always coming back to the theme of how you can hack your way to new skills, insights, knowledge and understanding. Hack in the sense of the word meaning to manage or cope, but also because everything these days is about “hacking”. Topics will range from: practical philosophy, engineering, cyber security, lock picking, fixing stuff, growing your own, and so on – all ethically of course.

For the first slot I am going to talk about Stoicism. Yawn, philosophy. I stumbled upon Stoicism whilst reading a book called ‘Happy’ by Derren Brown, which happened shortly after watching his dismantling of faith healing on Netflix. I am no expert, just a hacker, so I apologise to all the philosophy graduates reading this.

The thing that appeals to me about Stoicism is the basic premise of PAW. Perception, Action, Will.

In Cottenham, while it expands with more people and services and traffic and change and of course those young people… we could all do with knowing that we can make our world a happier place by being kind and working hard to suppress anger (in the ‘70s it was all the rage to let out your anger, not anymore), it would be quite neat for us to have a noodle on this:

Perception – separate the actual thing being said/done/ written, from your perception of it. They are two different things. We all tend to build stories around our own narrative that bolsters our own beliefs and expands them, makes those things that happen in our world more than they really are.

Action – take purposeful action, scrap positive thinking.

Work actively to pause when you feel angry, suppress it. Work actively to be kind to others, everyone is going through something you cannot see or perceive. Remember Stoicism was born from a very tough place, one Marcus Aurelius who saw lots of death, so do not confuse all this talk of kindness with being soft!

Will – you are only in control of your own thoughts and actions, everything else is external and outside your control. This doesn’t mean giving up, it just means not wasting time on worrying about things you cannot change, which is most stuff. Those who do concern themselves with everything tend to spiral out of control and be very painful to be around.

Finally, if nothing else, be kind, don’t be angry.

RAISING MONEY FOR KERALA FLOOD VICTIMS - BAR HILL CHURCH ART EXHIBITION There will be an art exhibition on 20 October to raise money for the victims of the floods in Kerala. Beginning in July 2018, severe floods affected the south Indian state of Kerala, due to unusually high rainfall during the monsoon season. It was the worst flooding in Kerala in nearly a century. NEWS FROM SUSTAINABLE COTTENHAM Litter pick and cycle path tidy: 3 November 2018 2pm We are changing the timing of our litter picks to spring and autumn instead of winter and summer. Therefore, our next litter pick will take place on Saturday 3 November 2018, assembling at the Village Hall (at the Recreation Ground on Lambs lane) at 2pm. Refreshments will be served from 4pm. We also plan to clear and clean up the Histon Road cycle path and the task force for this will meet at the Village Green at 2pm.

NB for all our litter pick events, children may take part provided they are under the close supervision of a responsible adult.

Equipment will be provided but wear suitable clothing for the weather – we will still go ahead even if it rains.

YOGA BRING MUMS TOGETHER Local pregnancy and postnatal mum and baby yoga classes bring new mums together to enhance the whole experience of pregnancy, birth and early motherhood.

In a typical class, gentle exercise sequences combined with breathing and relaxation practices take place. It’s common for mums to sleep better, get relief from aches and pains, feel happier and more confident in their pregnancy and with their bodies and little babies bodies too. In fact, women often find Yoga for the first time in pregnancy and want to continue after babies arrive because it makes them feel so good!

A big benefit comes from women being together during this transformative time. It’s a very supportive and nourishing practice for when mums need it most. Friendships are made, and scientific research now shows us that practicing Yoga and being part of a supportive community has profound health benefits on the body and mind and even for the growing baby in the womb. It helps women cope well with all the changes and possible stress, and is a well known successful method for alleviating anxiety and depression.

Postnatal classes are a calming, fun space for mums with

their little ones. Specific relaxing exercises build mum’s strength and muscle tone whilst babies light up and giggle with special baby yoga moves and songs. The moves help babies with their physical, emotional and psychological developmental milestones whilst having fun with mummy.

Our daughter is now 4 and still loves us singing the songs and doing the baby moves together from when she was tiny, Dad was easily able to learn the moves with her too!

Weekly classes take place in the delightful Cottenham Community Cafe, where the precious relationship between mums and growing babies are nurtured and celebrated through these beautiful Yoga classes.

One mum said: “I can honestly say that my pregnancy was so positive and stress free due to your weekly class.

I believe your class was one of the contributing factors of making my experience the best I could ever have! I had so many worries when I first found out that I was pregnant, but every week my pains/niggles/worries disappeared!”

CTW’S ‘WORZEL GUMMIDGE’ TICKETS TO GO ON SALE Tickets for Cottenham Theatre Workshop’ Christmas show ‘Worzel Gummidge’ go on sale on Monday 16 October.

Directed by our long-standing friend and collaborator, Gloria Milne, this show promises to have songs, laughs and the usual set of high-jinks, along with a whole host of loveable scarecrows! Following the story that was introduced in the ‘80s TV show of the same name, this will delight fans of the original and introduce a whole new generation to the characters of Worzel and Aunt Sally.

21ST-CENTURY SHRINK-WRAPPED LIVES One day early in July I walked into a small Sainsbury’s shop with the intention that I would buy nothing wrapped in plastic. What could I buy? Wine, beer, posh chocolate in cardboard packets, eggs, a couple of over-ripe tangerines.

Well, you might think that was not such a bad choice, but there was nothing to cook for five people for dinner.

Milk comes in plastic cartons. Bread (sliced or unsliced) is wrapped in plastic bags. Cheese, most vegetables, bacon, sausages, probably all prepared meals – all come in plastic; cereal has plasticised bags inside the boxes, boxes of tea have plastic round them, boxes of biscuits have plastic inside them. Rice, pasta, shampoo, shower gel, fizzy drinks, crisps, sweets – trying to go “plastic free” for July was a nightmare, what was I thinking of?

The maybe crazy idea came from reading a couple of blogs about ‘Plastic free July’, which meant giving up single use plastic for one month. After reading the first blog, I thought it was interesting but rather extreme and too hard core for me; my enthusiasm for sustainability simply did not go as far as trying to make my own toothpaste. Then I came across another blog, and so when a colleague said she was going to do plastic free July it suddenly seemed less ludicrous. Perhaps I’d give it a go.

The idea may seem ludicrous to you, or not feasible, or just pointless, and in some ways you are probably right.

But consider it for another minute, maybe walk into a supermarket and see what you could buy if you refused anything in single use plastic. Could you do it for a day?

A week? It was shocking to me and quite depressing how much our lives are wrapped up in plastic.

So, we started to get milk in glass bottles delivered by the milkman, we tried making yogurt, we got the bread-maker going on a daily basis (at least flour comes in paper),

I even tried making halloumi. I spent lots of money in the Daily Bread Co-operative on Kings Hedges Road, where most foods are indeed in plastic bags but they claim that they are bio-degradable (we are waiting to see if that is true...). I learned that you can re-fill some things like shampoo and washing up bottles at the Daily Bread, and we discovered BeeBee Wraps, which are brilliant (but pricey) re-usable natural beeswax food wraps. I made good use of all the loose fruit and vegetables you can buy from our local greengrocer Les Ward, I took silver foil to the cheese counter at the supermarket and asked them to wrap my cheese in it. However, all this took a lot more effort, more time and more money than our usual shopping, and it got harder as we ran out of basic items in the cupboards. When we needed toilet roll we drew the line at DIY alternatives. By the last week of July we were feeling a bit depressed at the dismally minimal contents of our fridge, so when friends came round we caved in and bought strawberries and cream that were of course in plastic packaging.

Before July, I thought that I did a good job by recycling so much at home, and I thought that I rarely bought take-away food and drinks in plastic packaging, but actually when it came to it I realised how many plastic spoons and pots and bottles I did actually buy. Shopping without plastic was not a cheap or easy option, and we had a lot to learn about packing the shopping – some of the fruit we bought and put into our own bags got squashed and wasted (it’s true that food packaging extends the life of some foods and avoids waste), but trying to go plastic free in July really opened our eyes to the choices we make and how lots of things can be done differently if you want them to.

UPDATE FROM HEIDI ALLEN MP There’s been no shortage of sun this Summer so I hope you have been able to spend some time enjoying the glorious weather!

Parliamentary recess allows me to focus on important local issues while I am away from the “hurly burly” of Westminster.

As always, my newsletter can only ever be a snapshot of my work but I hope it gives you an overview of what I have been up to!

The major infrastructure improvements needed in South Cambridgeshire remain a priority for me. In July, Highways England announced their plans to start construction work on the expressway between the Black Cat roundabout and Caxton Gibbet in 2021/2. This is later than originally planned and I share residents’ concerns about the delays. Highways England told me there are two reasons. The engineering at the A1 end is more complex than originally envisaged and they also want the A14 Cambridge to Huntingdon works to complete before they begin construction work on the A428.

I am meeting with the Chancellor (along with neighbouring MP, Jonathan Djanogly) soon to ensure he fully understands how vital this road improvement scheme is and that nothing can allow it to be delayed further.

Another much-needed improvement to our local infrastructure is the Girton M11/J14 Interchange. If improvements are not made, the benefits of the A428 expressway and the improvements to the A14 simply won’t be delivered as we won’t have a joined-up network. With the housing growth anticipated across Cambridgeshire and with new jobs being created at the Biomedical Campus, we need to make sure the growth potential of the area has the infrastructure to match the ambition for the area. I have made a bid for funding for the Girton interchange ahead of the Autumn statement and reiterated how vital it is to the Chancellor and Roads Minister.

East West Rail (Oxford to Cambridge) is another project that many constituents have contacted me about and I want to reassure you that NO route has yet been chosen.

Personally, I support a route that is closely aligned with the A428 corridor as public transport is almost non-existent in this part of the constituency. It would also support the housing growth planned at Cambourne and Northstowe, so seems obvious to me. I am pushing this route with Rob Brighouse (Chairman of the East West Rail Company) and am pleased to report he has shown interest and we will be meeting again soon. I’ll keep you posted, but please be assured I will let you know as soon as any route possibilities emerge.

In my newsletters at the beginning of the year, I urged local residents to contribute to the consultation on the Ministry of Justice’s proposed closure of Cambridge Magistrates’ Court. Well, you did and they listened! At the end of July, the Ministry confirmed the court will remain open. Thank you to the many local people who contacted me about this

– there were a number of concerns about the consultation and I am pleased that the right decision has been made.

Over the summer I’ve been out on the farm, helping with the harvest in Thriplow and Boxworth. I suspect I may have been more hindrance than help but I was very enthusiastic!

A combine harvester may not be everyone’s vehicle of choice, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Our farmers of course work hard all year round, but there is an undeniable pressure at a harvest time as they work around the clock to bring our food in off the fields. Hats (caps?) off!

In August, I spent a shift with the Cambridgeshire Fire and Rescue Service. I donned my boots, braces and trousers as I got to grips with just some of the work our fire service do for us. As you’d appreciate, they do an amazing job in often very difficult situations, but having participated in a training exercise in a smoke filled building, I cannot commend them highly enough. It never occurred to me that when a building is on fire, they work with no visibility – zero. I couldn’t see a thing. Speaking honestly, I was terrified. So I’d just like to put on record my personal thanks.

You will be aware from my previous newsletters of the action I have been taking to hold GTR to account for the debacle following the introduction of their new train timetable in May. Over recent months, I have been arguing that compensation must not apply only to season ticket holders – there are plenty of commuters in South Cambridgeshire who have been affected but who are not season ticket holders.

In the last few days, GTR has announced that the compensation scheme will now also include non-season ticket holders. This is welcome news but GTR still have some way to go to ensure that services are better and I have contacted Chris Grayling again to urge him to delay the proposed rail fare increase until the services have been fully restored AND maintained. My work on behalf of commuters continues and I will be meeting with the new Chief Executive of GTR shortly. I will leave him in no doubt about the strength of feeling of local commuters and will provide an update on this on my dedicated website page – www.heidisouthcambs.co.uk/gtr and in my next newsletter.

Avro 504 aeroplane on the Cottenham Auxiliary Air Field, 85 acres were set aside for the Royal Flying Corp.75th Home Defence Squadron along the Rampton road. The personnel lived under canvas and their main job was to shoot down Zeppelins.
