Seen over and around local farmland and waterways: marsh harrier, Montagu’s Harrier, red kite, buzzard, kestrel, hobby, barn owl, cormorant, swallow, swift, house martin, linnet, grey heron, little egret, corn bunting, reed bunting, meadow pipit, skylark, yellowhammer, yellow wagtail, common tern.

Seen along Cottenham Lode: whitethroat, lesser whitethroat, turtle dove. The local kingfisher seems to have gone missing.

Seen in Rampton Spinney and elsewhere: blackcap, goldcrests, green woodpecker, great spotted woodpecker, willow warbler, chiffchaff, bullfinch in and around the village.

Heard or spotted overhead in Cottenham: pair of ravens, little grebe.

Several swift boxes on houses around the village have been occupied this summer although swallow, house martin, sand martin and swift numbers seem lower than usual.

BIRD WATCH “What’s a warbler, anyway?”

Seasons come and go and it is time for a new writer for this column. I’m sure I will never fill Jasper Kay’s shoes as a birder, but I will endeavour to follow in his footsteps and plot the flight paths of our local feathered friends.

Of course, I say local, but many of the birds we see are anything but local. Migrants arrive in the spring from subSaharan Africa, in the winter others migrants flock from the Arctic. Those that spend the summer, we call summer visitors. Many of them travel thousands of miles: the cuckoos, swallows, swifts, and house martins. Perhaps less familiar is a group of birds we call the “warblers”.

The term “warbler” refers to a very disparate group of small birds that are really only united in that you might refer to the songs and calls as warbling, although some of them are less melodic than others and more scratchy improvisers, but that’s probably too unwieldy a name for a type of bird.

Walk along the Cottenham Lode and you might catch a fleeting glimpse of a cackling bird with a white throat, which goes by the rather obvious name the whitethroat, you might also see its more furtive cousin, the lesser whitethroat. Among the noisier of the warblers, is the reed warbler, which again rather obviously, as its name suggests, is a warbler that lives among the reeds.

Head into the Rampton Spinney and you might hear the summery and rather more melodic song of its cousin, the blackcap. A grey bird with, yes, an obviously black cap.

Unless it’s the female or a youngster in which case the cap is a chestnut brown. You may well have had blackcaps overwintering in your garden during the last few years. Tracking of specimens from Germany and Eastern Europe would suggest that many get lost when heading back to North Africa and Iberia for the winter and find our bird feeders enticing and that our generally reasonably warm winter climate suits them fine.

yellows. The chiffchaff has dark legs whereas those of the willow warbler are pink-ish and the latter has longer wings.

However, the most notable difference is in their song, the willow warbler preferring a descending fluting melody over the chiffchaff’s rhythmic cadence. That said, leg colour can vary and some specimens will, on rare occasions, mimic the other species in their song, so there is rarely 100% certainty in their identification.

It is on local nature reserves rather than farmland that you are more likely to see or hear some of the other warblers including the plain-plumaged garden warbler, noisy and melodic Cetti’s warbler, the flighty sedge warbler, and the grasshopper warbler with its talent for mimicking the sound of, you guessed it, grasshoppers. You might have to head to Dunwich Heath if you want to see the troubled Dartford warbler and perhaps even further afield to see a marsh warbler, moustached warbler, Bonelli’s warbler, or the fantailed warbler. That said, an unusual warbler, the great reed warbler, which is almost as big as a song thrush, has been seen and heard at RSPB Fen Drayton this summer.

During the summer months, you might also hear the regular “chiff-chaff” call of the chiffchaff. This species looks almost identical to the willow warbler, which, bucking the obvious naming trends, does not necessarily favour willow trees.

FIRST REPORT FROM OUR NEW DISTRICT COUNCILLORS’ We would like to take the opportunity to introduce ourselves as the new District Councillors for Cottenham in this first report. We feel very privileged to have been elected and we are looking forward to serving Cottenham and Rampton for the next four years. As many people have told us, we do not have an easy task ahead of us.

A central part of our mission is to improve communications between Councillors and residents. We will hold regular drop-in sessions – the first of these were held at the Cottenham Community Centre on June 20 and on July 17. Thanks to those who stopped in to see us. The next one at the Community Centre is on 18 September. Planning will continue to be contentious. We have not escaped the large-scale speculative planning applications in Cottenham and that story continues to develop. The recent adverse decision on the planning appeal in respect of the 154 houses off Rampton Road will mean yet another large-scale development on the fringe of the village with all sorts of complications for the Recreation Ground.

It is clear that without some growth our villages will die, with only the affluent who have benefited from a rocketing housing market able to afford live in them. As a society we have got to address these issues. However, affordability is a broader concept that encompasses aspects apart from the cost of housing. Housing without access to public transportation and other amenities and services can impose high costs on the new residents and create pressures on existing services for existing residents. This is a balance that we need to get right to ensure that the quality of life is enhanced, not diminished. We will be

active voices in ensuring that these new developments do not put strains on the village that it cannot bear. We are worried that these factors have not been given the attention that they deserve and know that many residents share our concerns. We want to bring various parties together to ensure that as developments proceed, the relationship to the existing village is considered in the detailed design. We will also ensure that developers live up to their obligations – the Bellway development on Oakington Road is a good example of how closely these things need to be monitored.

The issues of transportation in our villages have also been overlooked and under-communicated to residents.

We have started to engage with parties working on the rural travel hubs concept and the trial at Oakington. We were surprised and really disappointed that Cottenham and Rampton residents had not been consulted on the scheme. That has now changed and we will be engaging actively to represent the interests of our villages.

We attended the Amey Community Liaison Group meeting on June 14 and were really disappointed by the meeting. We have since written to Amey suggesting specific modifications to the reporting of odours from the composting activity, which we are aware is a frequent source of unpleasantness for Cottenham residents.

Instances of odours from the composting should be reported to Amey via 01223 861010 or directly to the Environment Agency on 0800 807060 (why not both!).

Please let us know too.

We also face Amey’s planning application for the Waterbeach incinerator. This is a County planning decision that is to be considered in July. It is an issue of real interest to us and many people living in the Parish, both in terms of the facility itself but broader questions of recycling and waste. We were really disappointed that the opportunity for residents to express their views from the outset was undermined by an inadequate process of information sharing. We are pleased that we were heard and that events like the Landbeach information session were initiated. We, like many residents, still have significant concerns about the facility and its operation and will keep you informed about what is happening on this front.

Our volunteers carry out the sessions in their own time – some of them work so it’s not always easy to fit in sessions.

The more volunteers we have, the more sessions we can run. It’s even more important to run these sessions with all the extra traffic avoiding the A14 works coming through.

TIME-BANKING & TIME CREDITS FOR COTTENHAM? Sustainable Cottenham is looking into whether it would be beneficial to Cottenham’s residents to set up a TimeBanking scheme whereby people can exchange help, advice and companionship.

It may sound a bit idealistic but it has been shown to reduce loneliness and promote community spirit in local parishes such as Somersham. We may even be able to extend this to printed Time Credits where volunteer hours can be exchanged for other benefits. There are already many valuable services in Cottenham run by volunteers and Time Banking is not intended to interfere with those arrangements – it would aim to complement existing activities and encourage involvement from an even wider cross-section of residents. OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD It may seem strange to be writing about shoe boxes and Christmas during a summer heatwave but now is really good time to begin collecting small gifts, such as small cars, skipping ropes, or balls to fill shoe boxes ready for the annual campaign for Operation Christmas Child which runs each November.

This year's packing days are Friday 9th and Saturday 10th November in All Saint's Church Hall.

The artwork can be purchased with 20% of the proceeds donated to the Centre itself.

The exhibitions usually run for two months. There is a wall hanging system in place and plentiful wall space to show work.

The scheme was set up by the Cottenham printmaker, Iona Howard. Currently the work of artist Rita Morton is on display: colourful, striking prints consisting of lino prints, photoscreens, collagraphs and drypoint.

COTTENHAM WI Our darts team made the finals recently and our walking group have been looking at damselflies and hedgerow flowers. There have been trips to explore the history of Whitechapel and Spitalfields, a table tennis taster session and a visit to a local brewery. There are many different things to get involved with in your local WI so do come along and join us. You will be very welcome.

BOWLS CLUB We are well into June and the outdoor bowls season is in full swing. It is lovely to play bowls when the weather is warm and sunny.

On June 9th Cottenham Bowls Club held an Open Triples Competition. There were 24 teams each playing four games of six ends to battle for a semi- final place followed by a final.

It was a full day with refreshments served throughout the morning and afternoon and a two-sitting lunch. The weather was kind and a great day was had by all.

Cottenham Charities can also give support to elderly frail residents who would like the assurance of a Community Lifeline alarm but are put off by the cost of installing and renting the system.

MOBILE WARDEN SCHEME Do you like chatting to people? Do you have a caring nature? Do you have a few hours to spare? If so you might be interested in joining our team on the Cottenham Mobile Warden Scheme. The scheme was set up as a charity in 1997 to support elderly people living alone in our village.

Each morning one of our wardens telephones each of our members to check all is well and once a week they make a visit. At weekends and when our wardens are on holiday, volunteers take over the duties and they would love to be joined by another one or two volunteers. Maybe you could be one. Alternatively, if you or your elderly relative would like to become a member please also call Pat. The member must live in Cottenham.

COTTENHAM CRICKET CLUB NEWS By the time you see this, the cricket season will be entering the home straight – let’s hope our senior teams have been able to maintain their good starts to the campaign.

Our junior teams, of course, will already have finished their fixtures (which run in school term-time) and we do hope they have enjoyed their cricket and continued to develop their skills, whatever the results. For our youngest team the under-11s, this will, for many, have been their first taste of competitive cricket and it is a steep learning curve. With continued practice, though, they will be all the better for it next year.

Several of our under-14 team have joined our 2nd XI squad. It’s a bit of a step up at that age but the experience, and the chance to learn from more experienced players, will stand them in great stead for the future. Hopefully it will also act as a spur to all our young players who can see that the opportunity to progress quickly through the Club’s ranks is definitely there for anyone who shows commitment and potential. That’s what our junior system is all about – the future of the Club depends upon it.

There’s still time to come along and join us for the remaining weeks of the season. Our men’s fixtures continue until September 1st as will our mid-week net sessions so, if you are interested, don’t hesitate. We’re a very friendly bunch and you’ll have an extremely warm welcome. PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE Neighbourhood Plan We held a “Regulation 14” consultation between 19th June and 7th August to collect your comments alongside those of about various statutory consultees. Hopefully you were able to visit one or other of the exhibitions or drop-in sessions and have commented on the draft plan. If you receive this in time, there may still be an opportunity for a last-minute comment!

Once we have all the comments summarised and made any necessary alterations we will submit the revised plan to SCDC so they can arrange a further consultation and independent examination to check it meets all the formal requirements.

Major Building Developments Bellway Homes are getting on with building out their site on Oakington Road, causing some inconvenience to their neighbours.

Persimmon have submitted their Reserved Matters application which sets out house style and street layouts etc. We have particular concerns given the time it has taken them to get the Tenison Manor surface water arrangements finished.

Neither Gladman nor the County Council has, at the time of writing, submitted their Reserved Matters application.

We are discussing layout details with the County Council as this seriously affects our sports provision.

Village Hall/Nursery update Following reasonably positive pre-application reports on the proposed approaches, the Parish Council approved applications for planning permission.

Highways It took a while to get there, but the zebra crossing was finally installed on the High Street during May, as part of the ‘Safe Route to Schools’ project (funded by the Race Course View developers). The give way feature and speed cushions work on Beach Road has encountered several hiccups in the process, but this project should be underway (maybe even completed!) at the time of publication.

Lambs Lane is due to be patched and painted during August and road markings should have been refreshed along the length of the High Street by now. We continue to chase County Highways on the works needed on Beach Road heading out towards Landbeach and of course the vast number of potholes plaguing the village. We have reported to County Highways several areas of poor road repairs and pavement damage caused by utility companies and await the outcome.

Traffic and Transport Working Group Some of you may have noticed the traffic measuring on Histon Road during June. This was in response to a request from the Traffic and Transport Working Group (which, like Speedwatch, is not part of the Parish Council but has Parish Council support). Among other activities, T&TWG is looking for the most effective way to slow down our traffic. The data has been analysed by an independent Traffic Consultant who is suggesting some ideas on how the Parish Council might progress the project with County Highways. We’ll be doing more surveys around the village’s roads later this year to make our roads safer for all users. We may even tip off the Police on where their time could be spent most productively.

Flood Risk Forum Following our Chair’s request, our MP, Heidi Allen, recently convened a multi-agency meeting to discuss the risk arising from all the new developments that have been permitted here. The group included representatives from the Environment Agency, who look after Cottenham Lode and the River Ouse, into which much of our surface water flows directly or indirectly; the Internal Drainage Board who look after many of the drains in the low fields surrounding Cottenham taking almost all our water away into the Ouse;

the District Council which, as Local Planning Authority, has permitted all these developments and needs to ensure that the planning conditions are fit for purpose and enforced; the County Council who have the strategic responsibility for flood risk in the area; and the Parish Council.

We identified a mixture of short-term remedial actions which are already being worked on and agreed to set up a quarterly “Cottenham Flood Risk Forum”, with similar membership chaired by Frank, to continue the work with our own Flood Risk Group. Look out for their reports and, if you want to know more about our flood exposure, one of the Neighbourhood Plan evidence papers on our website covers the topic in some detail.

Anti-social behaviour The police have advised that any issues with ASB should be phoned through to 101 or 999 if a crime is taking place or you feel in danger. This will help them to build a bigger picture of the issues that maybe arising in our community.

Recreation Ground We’ve attended to a few maintenance issues with the zip wire and 4-bay swings in addition to providing a new basketball hoop. We’re also looking at the siting of some more benches on the Rec playing fields as well as further picnic tables in the play area.

Following the story that was introduced in the 80s TV show of the same name, this will delight fans of the original and introduce a whole new generation to the characters of Worzel and Aunt Sally.

REMEMBRANCE DAY 2018 – 100 YEARS SINCE THE END OF WW1 “They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.”

This year's remembrance parade will mark the one hundredth anniversary of the cessation of hostilities, the signing of the armistice and the end of World War 1.

World War 1 began in 1914, after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and lasted until 1918. During the conflict, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria and the Ottoman Empire (the Central Powers) fought against Great Britain, France, Russia, Italy, Romania, Japan and the United States (the Allied Powers). Although Europe had seen many conflicts during the preceding centuries, World War 1 was unique in the fact that it was the first conflict known for the concept of total war. Total war had no barriers and affected both the military and civilian population and its infrastructure. In Great Britain, coastal towns and major cities bore the brunt of Central Power aggression with naval and Zeppelin airship bombardment delivering devastating effect in order to dent morale.

Between 1914 and 1915 the Ministry of War asked for a large volunteer force to supplement the 100,000-regular army that existed at the beginning of hostilities and to counter the high troop attrition rate. The Military Service Act was enacted in January 1916 and specified that single men aged 18 to 40 years old were liable to be called up for military service unless they were widowed with children or ministers of a religion. Our young men from the cities, towns and villages answered the 'call for arms' and began joining local Regiments and 'Pals Brigades' aimed at allowing both family members and friends to train and serve on the western front and other conflict areas together.

By December 1914 the war had descended into trench warfare stalemate, with little gain on the battlefield, but with a significantly high proportion killed or wounded on both sides. The first day of the Battle of the Somme, in northern France, was the bloodiest day in the history of the British Army and one of the most infamous days of World War 1. On 1 July 1916, the British forces suffered 57,470 casualties, including 19,240 fatalities; they gained just three square miles of territory. With our men either volunteering or being conscripted to fight abroad, our women provided the

vital workforce within agriculture, armaments, logistics and medical services. Without their efforts and determination I am certain the country would have capitulated.

Although it is difficult to say how many young men volunteered to serve from Cottenham and Rampton, what is definitely known is the incredible loss and pain the inhabitants of the villages suffered during this period. The war memorial lists 62 names for World War 1 (including 2 civilians) and a further 17 names for World War 2. At the beginning of the war the combined population of the villages would have been approximately 2800 people and with the average family size of five this would equate to around 560 households. This means that over 10 percent of the village households would have lost someone during the conflict. The figure for those returning injured, both physical and mental is not known, however my own memories of witnessing injured ex-soldiers suffering from the scars of war would lead me to believe that the effects of conflict affected the families long after the conflict had ended. In modern warfare, and in the unfortunate event of a casualty, whether killed or wounded, the next of kin are informed within 24 hours or less. During World War 1, the standard practice to inform the next of kin was to send a telegram, not surprisingly families came to dread the arrival of a telegram and were afraid to open them. Over a million British soldiers were killed in this war so for most families telegrams came to be associated with bad news.

Cottenham and Rampton would have been forged on a close-knit community and every death or casualty would send shockwaves and grief throughout. Families, neighbours and friends would have pulled together adding comfort and support, looking after bereaved, taking over the burden of household duties and where possible affording financial support, all whilst dreading the next day's news.

For both the villages, 1916 to 1918 were very sad years and numbered eighteen killed in 1916, seventeen killed in 1917 and sixteen killed in 1918. Of particular note are the Ely, Worland, Hewitt and Ward families. George and Anne Ely lost two sons (Albert and Frank), Fred and Eliza Worland lost three of their sons (Frank, Harry and Albert) of which Harry and Albert were killed on the same day during the first day of the Somme on 1 July 1916. David and Mary Ann Hewitt lost two sons (John and Robert), and it was even

more harrowing the Worland’s and Hewitt’s were cousins.

Mrs Elsie Ward not only lost her husband James on 27 August 1918, she also lost her son Arthur at El Alamein on 21 August 1942 during World War 2. Other people of note and for their selfless work is Florence Cox who fulfilled the duty of Commandant of the Cottenham Red Cross Hospital between 1915 and 1918 who died in January 1919, and Malcolm Norman who worked as an Orderly in the Red Cross Hospital, sadly dying in October 1916.

During this year's Remembrance Day there will be a series of events in and around the village to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the signing of the Armistice, our events form part of a wider series of coordinated activities across the country. The Cottenham Remembrance Day Committee invite you all to come and join in and support the planned events that will be held around the village and help remember all of those individuals who gave so much for their country. Remembrance is also a time to show solidarity for all people, families and organisations affected by conflict throughout the world and at any time.

The symbolic milestone of the centenary will not draw to a close Remembrance Day, but will reiterate and invigorate the importance of remembering those that have fallen.

FAMILY HISTORY SOCIETY Working in partnership with Wisbech and Fenland Museum, the Cambridgeshire Family History Society is embarking on an ambitious project to digitise 32 parish registers which are currently in the Museum collection, over 50,000 pages and 500,000 records from Cambridgeshire and Norfolk. The Museum and the Society have had the support of the Cambridgeshire Archives who have loaned specialist equipment to support this venture. We will be working through parish by parish and, as we finish a parish, the images will be released and will be published on the website. These will then be searchable on the Society's Ancestor Finder database, available to download by purchase of tokens, along with all other Society records.

This work is being carried out by volunteers and is anticipated to take about a year to complete. A full list of the parishes and dates is available on the Museum website at http://www.wisbechmuseum.org.uk//Archives.htm.

SCOUTS UPDATE

– ST GEORGE'S DAY On Sunday 22nd April, Scouts, Cubs and Beavers all gathered in the hall of Comberton village college, prepared for St George's Day. They listened to a speech being given and were tasked with a number of challenges.

After the speech, we paraded 100m to the Scout Hut near the college. Thankfully, helpers provided drinks and snacks to everybody which I presume were donated or baked by themselves.

On the field, there were several activities for people to have a go at. One of them was firelighting, where you had to make a fire with flint and steel or a range of chemicals.

Another activity was rifle shooting; most people had a go at this and this was the most popular. Our instructor, Chris, gave us clear instructions on how to handle the gun and explained the parts. It was the only activity I did but I found it very enjoyable.

If I was going to go again, I would.

ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH All Saints’ Church, Cottenham has finished its renovation work! We held a weekend of free activities in June for the village to celebrate.

The weekend was full of flowers, bells, music and food, and we had beautiful weather. The ringers rang a quarter peal in celebration, to kick off the festivities. We had beautiful flowers and displays from various parts of the church family, representing: the choir and music, Clergy, Authorised Lay Ministers (ALMs), Sidespeople (welcomers in church), the children in Junior Church, the toddlers at Little Saints, the charities we support, the churchwardens, the Church Council (PCC) and Action Groups, the drama group, prayer, publicity, knitting and embroidery, Fellowship Tea, Churches Together in Cottenham, Publicity as well as what we provide for the whole village: baptisms, weddings and funerals. Welcomers and guides were on hand to show people around the church, and there was a quiz and treasure hunt in the church building and churchyard.

In the rectory garden there was free tea and coffee, as well as a Teddy Bear Picnic. We had fifty very brave cuddly toys who zip-wired off the church tower, following proper health checks of course! In the evening, we had a concert from local choirs and orchestras, including Tyrannochorus, the Cottenham Village College orchestra, and Singing for Fun. On Sunday morning, Bishop Stephen conducted a service of Family Communion, blessing our refurbished building and dedicating the members of the church to their work for Christ. In the afternoon we had tea and cake in the rectory garden as well as games and tours of the church tower, followed by Songs of Praise in the church with Cottenham

Brass. It was our pleasure to show ourselves as generous and visible people of Christ in Cottenham.

Over the summer and the autumn, we will continue to do the normal work of the church, holding weddings, baptisms, and funerals, as well as two services on Sundays, fellowship teas, toddler group, and more. We will also be experimenting with monthly Sunday evening services in different formats, so look out for these. In other news, the two parishes of Cottenham and Rampton have now merged to become one parish, Cottenham with Rampton, with Revd Lynda Davies as the Rector.

In the autumn, we will be taking part in village activities to mark the centenary of the end of World War One, as will parishes across the country. Sunday November 11th will see a Remembrance Day service followed by stalls on the green and a tea for veterans. A beacon will be lit at 6:55pm and at 7:05pm church bells will ring out for peace across the country.

VILLAGE SOCIETY In September we start our new season of autumn talks culminating with our Christmas party. These are themed on local history. Membership of the village society is £10 per year if you would like to join us. We continue with more talks in the New Year and in summer we have outings, walks and a party.

Talks are held in the Cottenham All Saints’ church hall, normally on the second Friday of the month at 7:45pm.

TOY LIBRARY The Cottenham Toy Library soft play sessions continue to be a popular activity for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers.

Taking place in the spacious hall in the Community Centre, children can explore, climb and have fun on our fabulous equipment, and parents and carers are welcome to bring in a tea or coffee from the cafe next door while the little ones play!

We run two sessions every month, on a Friday morning, which cost £2 per child, £1 per child under 1 year (babies in arms with siblings are free) or £3 per family. We no longer require a membership fee, so you can drop in whenever it suits you. The sessions now run for just an hour, from 11:15am to 12:15pm.

Dates of our autumn/winter sessions are below, but it’s best to check our Facebook page for any updates – we do occasionally have to cancel if we can’t find enough volunteers. We’re always looking for new helpers, so if you can spare 10 minutes or so on a Friday morning, once every couple of months, we’d really appreciate any help to set up, or pack away – the Toy Library can’t operate without its volunteers!

The Toy Library has been running for more than 30 years, and while we're not currently able to lend smaller items, we do have a great selection of larger toys that can be hired for parties and events – including ride-ons, walkers, scooters, see-saws, slides and two small bouncy castles!

COTTENHAM UNITED COLTS FC UPDATE Although, as I write, we are in our close season, preparations are already in full flow for 2018/19. With even more teams created for the coming season, including an U18 team to help transition into men’s football and yet another new girl’s team, no doubt the demands on pitches will be even greater in our ever-expanding village. We look forward to working in partnership with our pitch providers to facilitate the opportunity for our boys and girls to enjoy an active sporting childhood through organised football for all.

2017/18 saw the very successful re-establishment of girls’ football in the village. With over 60 Primary age girls signed up to our FA SSE Wildcats sessions and our new U13 Girls’ team finishing joint 5th in the league (out of 13) in their very first season. This is an immense achievement from a highly motivated and enthusiastic group of girls playing against long-established girls teams. In fact, all teams throughout the age groups U6-U16 have represented the club and the village superbly in their respective leagues, tournaments and friendlies gaining a renowned reputation for their adherence to The FA Respect scheme. Thanks to all the committee members, coaches and parents for their hard work and commitment all season. Win, lose or draw a successful season all around. Notable competitive successes include the U12s winning the Snowey Coulson Shield, U9s achieving a superb runners up spot at the annual St. Ives Town tournament and the U10s winning

our very own Cottenham Tournament in that age group.

Once again, a very successful tournament in the Bank Holiday sunshine helped to raise much needed funding for the club. COTTENHAM UNITED FC The new local football season is already upon us and, by the time you are reading this, the Cottenham Utd players will be well into their pre-season training. The Cottenham Cup will either be in progress or just finished and the 1st team fixtures, which start in August, won’t be far off. Do please keep an eye on our website (below) to check what’s happening.

We are running training sessions twice weekly on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:00-9:00pm at the Recreation Ground, Lambs Lane. All are welcome and you can be assured of a very warm and encouraging reception. Our

Club celebrates its 120th anniversary in 2019 and we are really hoping that we will also have something to celebrate on the pitch by then as well!

SPORTS AWARD Congratulations to David Burkett who has been awarded Champion of the year in The Annual Cambridge United Community Sports award in association with The Cambridge Independent Newspaper. This was for work coaching and promoting youth football within the village both boys and girls. In particular, along with his colleague Simon Rose, the development of the girls game both at Primary age level with the FA SSE Wildcats and College girls with the introduction of an new U13 team. David said: I am honoured and humbled to be recognised but this is something that thousands of volunteers are doing in grassroots sport day in day out, people such as Simon Rose.”

GARDENERS’ CLUB This year’s Fun Run was blessed with a glorious sunny day, and the well-stocked club stall sold a good volume of plants.

Thanks are due to the suppliers of plants and books, club members who helped to man the stall and of course, our customers. The proceeds help to boost the coffers of the club and keep our membership cost down.

In the August holiday season there is no regular meeting, but there is an evening drinks party for members on Friday 10th August, and, on Tuesday 14th, in the morning, a trip

September’s meeting, on Friday 28th, has a talk by Nigel Start, Fruit and Vegetable Specialist: Self Sufficiency through the Winter.

Cottenham Gardeners’ Club meets at Franklin Gardens Community Room, usually on the last Friday of the month.

Refreshments are served from 7:30pm, followed by a talk at 7:45pm. The evening closes with a raffle, for which prizes are always welcome. Membership costs £14 per annum, but from September, £7 will cover the rest of the club year.

Visitors are welcome to try a single meeting for £2, or £4 for one of the parties.
