THE KILI GIRLS 2018 CHALLENGE – WE DID IT! After a year of planning, four intrepid local friends, Cathie, Chris, Franny (all from Cottenham) and Lenja (from Cambridge) made it to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania. Walking up the tallest freestanding mountain in the world and highest peak in Africa presented us with a few challenges and an unforgettable experience that we would like to share a little with you.

The journey took us through the different climatic zones of the region; including lush, wet rainforest jungle, heath and moorland zones, alpine desert and the steep, exposed arctic summit region. Even though we had chosen the 8 day Lemosho route that allowed for acclimatization, altitude was a major challenge and something that we all had to overcome as we approached the higher stages of the trek.

Camp life was an experience; bed tea at 6am, a bowl of washing water (washy, washy), all meals provided, taking down and packing up the two-man tents and a portable loo – our amazing porters would rush on past us to the next destination, carrying vast amounts on their heads and backs.

Always cheerful and greeting us with Jambo (hello) or Pole Pole (slowly slowly), as they passed. The guides walked with us and we had a ratio of one guide per two trekkers.

Our party of 16 was cared for by a team of 64 amazing porters and guides and it was humbling to reach one of the earth’s most iconic mountains supported by such kindness from those who in our terms have so little. We had our own mess tent. Food was plentiful and nutritious for walking; porridge, eggs, bacon, toast and fruit for breakfast, excellent packed lunches and three course dinners, including the local dish, plantain stew on our last evening. Always lots of soup.

We had to drink at least three litres of fluid a day to avoid dehydration and we became accustomed to spotting good rocks and shrubs to hide behind on our rest breaks! We started walking most days at around 8.30 am and finished mid afternoon. Sleep was sometimes scarce because of altitude but our tents were cozy.

We made it to Stella Point and after sweet tea, set off on the final push from there, along the crater rim to the highest point, Uhuru Peak, 5,895 metres. The temperature was around – 10 degrees C but there was only 50% oxygen so it was difficult to breath.

Photos were taken, hugs and tears shared and we made our rapid descent down the scree – it was more of a scree jog and quite exhilarating. After lunch and a rest at base camp, we descended further to our final camp and after breakfast, were treated to a brilliant singing celebration by our porters and guides. This was also our chance to say thank you and we could donate kit and give tips. More hugs and tears.

Our last day took us quickly down towards the warmth of the rainforest and we were treated to lots of animal hoots and bird song, something that we hadn’t heard for a while. As we signed out from Kilimanjaro National Park for the final time, we were able to reflect on our journey of a lifetime and of those days spent amongst companions with whom we will share everlasting memories.

We self funded our adventure and raised money for our chosen charities. Thanks to the support and encouragement of so many of our friends and families we were able to raise significant donations, so would like to thank you all so much for such generosity. FUNDING AVAILABLE South Cambs District Council continues to recognise the health and social benefits of enabling our residents to live in a home that meets their needs, especially as those needs change, so we’d like to take the opportunity to remind residents that we have funding available for adaptations and essential repairs. For adaptations, residents should initially contact Cambridgeshire Direct on 0345 0455202 who will, if needed, arrange an Occupational Therapy Assessment.

Cambs Home Improvement Agency formed in 2012 as a partnership between 3 local district councils – customers requiring help with work such as roofing repairs, damp work, replacement windows and doors or new boilers are encouraged to contact the agency for information about what is available.

ONE BEDROOM HOUSE AVAILABLE A one bedroom house is available now at a modest rent.

Recently refurbished it comprises a sitting room/dining room, kitchen, bathroom and an upstairs bedroom with en-suite toilet. Applications will be considered from a person or couple over 60 and on low income who live in the Parish or from a relative of a parishioner who would like to move into the Parish to be near their family. ALL SAINTS’ CHURCH Inside this edition of Cottenham Newsletter you will find a Prayer Card. During the 10 days between Ascension and Pentecost – 10th - 20th May – churches up and down the country will be engaging in ‘Thy Kingdom Come’, a prayer initiative led by The Archbishop of Canterbury to get the nation praying for their friends and family. COTTENHAM THEATRE WORKSHOP – ‘PROTECTING YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD’ Attention citizens of Cottenham and the surrounding areas. Cottenham Theatre Workshop cordially invite you to our Spring production for 2018: ‘NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH’ This sublime comedy, from master of laughs Alan Ayckbourn, follows the lives of Martin and Hilda Massie as they settle in to a new, quiet life, in the confines of the Bluebell Hill Development. However, their new lives are quickly interrupted by an intruder in their garden… leading them to form the local Neighbourhood Watch scheme with their fellow residents. Suffice to say, these aren’t the usual meetings you’d expect from your local group, even including an interesting discussion about a certain contraption on the roundabout…

CRAZY CRAFTY CHICKS All crafts are based on recycled materials and every day objects. This means that once you have attended the workshop you will be equipped with the knowledge of not only how to create the craft, but lots of ideas about sourcing materials!

Crazy Crafting Chicks is a tutor led craft group, by Cottenham resident, Audrie Reed. They meet on the third Wednesday each month at the Cottenham Community Centre Cafe, between 7–9pm. For each workshop all materials are provided and from some of the workshops there are instructions to take away. A selection of tea/ herbals/coffee and soft drinks along with an assortment of cookies are provided too. The sessions are £20 bookable via Eventbrite. £10 for children accompanying an adult (under the age of 16) payable on the door. DISTRICT AND COUNTY COUNCIL REPORTS Keeping our village clean Cottenham already has a commendable litter-picking gang, collectively wielding manual tools from time to time. Community groups can now request the loan of a pavement sweeper or a small street sweeper over a weekend to allow volunteers to spruce up the paths and roadsides in their villages. The equipment will be dropped off on a Friday afternoon, and collected on the Monday morning. Full training will be provided, and users must have attended training before taking the controls! Borrowing the equipment will be free of charge, and insurance will be covered by South Cambridgeshire District Council. It is not intended that this will replace any scheduled street sweeping the Council are already doing, but to augment it.

The Council also budgeted £7,000 for a pilot scheme to upgrade some of its footway lighting to LEDs. If successful we plan to roll this out across the district ensuring all our street lighting is LED enabled, making us greener and saving energy for parishes.

Homelessness – Both nationally and locally the scourge of homelessness is growing. Whilst rough sleeping is the aspect that gets most attention in the press, it is not the most pressing challenge for rural districts like South Cambridgeshire. The annual estimate has always produced a nil return here in previous years, but in 2017 for the first time there have been reports of very small numbers of rough sleepers. Rough sleepers generally

gravitate towards towns and cities. Thus Cambridge City Council has a much greater challenge in this respect.

Homelessness though is a much more complex problem.

Changes to benefits are not the only reason for a rise in the numbers of those presenting as homeless or at risk of finding themselves in that unhappy situation. Family breakup is also a major factor and increasingly the ending of short-term private tenancies when the landlord decides to sell a property adds to homelessness numbers.

South Cambs has for the last ten years adopted a positive policy with the emphasis on prevention. The Council continually urges residents to seek its advice at the earliest possible time that they feel vulnerable to becoming homeless. Early contact allows the Council more options to help. It continues to provide grant funding to the Citizens’ Advice Bureaux who, in turn, provide expert advice and support to residents on budgeting and dealing with debt. Often this is sufficient to prevent the threat of homelessness turning into reality. However, when homelessness does strike the Council has a range of ways to help in as many different situations as possible.

Local authorities do not have a statutory obligation to provide temporary accommodation for all those presenting as homeless but this does not mean that the Council just turns its back on those for whom it is not obliged to provide housing. It offers help and advice on securing private

accommodation and even has a rental deposit scheme to help with the upfront costs associated with this option. It has also in the last year established its own Private Sector Leasing scheme which provides a complete management service to private landlords of properties which are then used by the Council to provide assured shorthold tenancies for homeless families. Ermine Street Housing, the Council's housing company set up with the prime objective of funding frontline services, also offers options for homeless families to secure rental properties. Finally, within its own housing stock (approximately 5,500 homes) the Council retains a small proportion for the purpose of temporarily housing homeless families until appropriate permanent accommodation becomes available. It has recently rebuilt a hostel offering high quality temporary accommodation for smaller family units.

The other aspect of homelessness that receives a good deal of media attention is the use of bed and breakfast for temporary accommodation. South Cambs has consistently managed to keep its use to a minimum. It is costly, and the Council does not regard this kind of accommodation as suitable for families – or anyone for extended periods.

Most importantly, the Council recognises that increasing the supply of affordable homes in the district is the most effective way of preventing homelessness in the long term.

Despite the financial challenges presented by the national rent setting policy and the rules on using Right to Buy receipts, South Cambs continues to build council houses.

Using its own resources and those now available through the Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority's £100 million housing fund, it is actively progressing its ambition to increase the number of affordable homes in the district. Fifty were completed in the last year and a

development pipeline has been established to continue delivery at at least the same rate.

Keeping Cambridge Special – Cambridge Past Present and Future held a very popular event on 13 January, at the Centre for Mathematical Sciences. One of the most heartening points made was an observation that the occasion itself was a demonstration of something special about Cambridge: CPPF could have confidence in calling a meeting on a topic like this for a freezing midwinter Saturday morning, knowing that it would be oversubscribed and that it would generate many strands of ideas for us all to keep in mind, as proposals for major development at Waterbeach and Bourn Airfield move forward.

The Land Cover Atlas of the United Kingdom, created

by Professor Alasdair Rae from Sheffield University’s Department of Urban Studies and Planning, shows the variety and volume of different types of land uses across the UK. He has compiled maps for every local planning authority in the country. The one for South Cambridgeshire shows that 6% of our land area has been built on (mostly entering the “discontinuous urban fabric” classification), 3% is green urban, 90% is farmland, and 1% is natural.

BOWLS CLUB Another bowls indoor short mat season is coming to a close and we look forward to outdoor bowls again.

To start the new season we are holding two Open Days for anyone who is interested in giving bowls a try. The dates for your diary are: Sunday 22 and 29 April 2pm – 4pm.

If you are unable to make these dates you could contact anyone below and they could organise a time for you to give bowls a go.

As well as playing bowls we have a good social section which includes BBQs and Quiz Nights.

JUNIOR CRICKET 2018 Just a reminder that, this summer, Cottenham Cricket Club is running three junior teams at under-11, under-12 and under-14 levels. These teams play matches throughout the school term and are open to both boys and girls.

We are really keen that all three teams be well supported so anyone who’s interested in coming along to have some fun and learn more about our great national summer game from our qualified coaches, do please get in touch. Please join in and get involved – our youngsters really are the future of our club, one of the oldest in the County, as it enters its 166th year!

We’re running indoor training sessions at Cottenham Village College Sports Hall on Weds evenings, 5–6pm (u-11s & u-12s), 6–7pm (u-14s) until April 25. Just turn up to any of the sessions – everyone is welcome. After that date we’ll be playing our matches midweek and training outdoors on Friday evenings.

Also, we’ll be running our ECB All Stars sessions again on Saturday mornings in May and June for 5-8 year olds. This was a great success last year and gives boys and girls an introduction to cricket which is fun for all. Please do get in touch if you’re interested – it’s a great few weeks.

COULD YOU COACH FOOTBALL? Cottenham United Football Club is currently looking for an enthusiastic new, or existing, coach to help manage one of its football teams.

We are a very friendly bunch and there is an opportunity to play at whatever level suits you and to progress up the levels if you want.

We currently run three men’s teams, a 1st team in the Cambs FA Kershaw Senior A League and a Reserve team and an ‘A’ team in the Cambs FA Mead Plant & Grab Leagues 3 and 5 which operate lower down the pyramid.

We would like to invite any newly qualified or current coaches or managers looking for a new challenge to get in touch with us. We are already making plans for the 2018/19 season and are anxious to get our arrangements in place as soon as possible so that we can hit the ground running before pre-season training starts in July.

The Club plays its matches at the King George V Recreation Ground, off Lambs Lane in Cottenham. We can offer excellent facilities for training and playing especially with the new, recently opened changing rooms and we have a thriving social club where we can all get together after-matches.

Of course, we are always on the lookout for new players to increase our strength in depth so if you are interested in joining us – we are one of the few Clubs in the County offering three adult teams – please do get in touch as well.

PARISH COUNCIL Precept 2018-19 We have set a net precept for 2018-19 of £328,834, resulting in an unchanged figure for all residents. This allows for a net budget of £202,307 plus the ongoing supplementary precept of £118,000 p.a. plus additional estimated highways project costs (approx. £40k) and, because of the slightly higher tax base, (number of houses paying Council Tax) without increasing the amount paid by residents.

Neighbourhood Plan Draft v4 now with SCDC to obtain report on impact on Environment and Habitat Regulations. Sixteen “NP planning evidence papers” and three AECOM reports have been published on our website and will be refined as v4.1a is being finalised. The draft Plan is now being cited in planning applications, so we may get more influence over site layouts etc. Regulation 14 “local consultation” arrangements are being prepared.

Major Building Developments Bellway Homes have outline permission (development principle and access) to build 50 homes off Oakington Road; the Reserved Matters (site layout and house types etc) application is yet to be determined.

Gladman Developments also have outline permission for their Rampton Road site. The site is now up for sale with offers due by 2nd March.

Persimmon Homes similarly have outline permission for 126 homes off Oakington Road. At end of February there was no sign of the Reserved Matters application.

County Council (S/2876) application to build 154 homes off Rampton Road was refused by SCDC in August. County have submitted an appeal which is due to be heard on 14th March.

County Council (S/3551) application to build 137 or 125 houses has been withdrawn.

There have been 2 new applications this year: Manor Oak (50 homes on land off Beach Road) – refusal recommended; although possible Rural Exception site in NP Lau (23 homes on land off Oakington Road) – refusal recommended partly for concerns over drainage SCDC do now have a 5-year land supply so the speculative wave should now subside.

Village Hall/Nursery update Both planning applications have been submitted for preapplication advice from SCDC. A site meeting is being held with the Case Officer on 16 March Highways After lots of badgering to County Highways, Coolidge Gardens has now been resurfaced. During March a give way feature, traffic calming measures and a crossing point are due to be installed on Beach Road and a new Zebra crossing is scheduled to be installed on the High Street (by the end of Wilkin Walk). We have also bid for a Local Highways Initiative grant for a Zebra crossing on the High Street near to the Post Office and are currently awaiting the outcome.

We continue to chase County Highways on the works needed on Beach Road heading out towards Landbeach and of course the vast number of potholes around the village.

improvements have been dropped from the project for the time being to stay within our means. Works to the Lambs Lane/Victory Way junction and Victory Way/Stevens Close is scheduled to be carried out during April.

Annual Parish Meeting The APM will be held this year on Thursday 10 May. This is your opportunity to find out what the Parish, District and County Councils have been up to over the past 12 months.

Battle’s Over: 100 years of remembrance On 11 November 2018, the United Kingdom and its friends overseas will mark the day 100 years ago when the guns fell silent at the end of the First World War. There will be a unique series of events in the morning and evening involving organisations and communities the length and breadth of our nation and in many countries abroad. We have already formally registered an interest in organising an event for Cottenham. If you would be interested in joining a working party or have any suggestions for events please contact us.

Meetings A reminder that our Full Parish Council meeting takes place on the first Tuesday of the month. Residents are welcome to attend and time is set aside specifically at the start of the meeting for you to raise questions. Meetings begin at 7:15pm and take place in the Village Hall. We also have smaller Committee meetings throughout the month for planning, community facilities, highways and finance. These meetings commence at 7:30pm in the Village Hall and again residents are welcome to attend.

Every English Parish must have a Parish Meeting (Local Government Act 1972, s13(1)).

This meeting consists of the local government electors registered for the area for which it is held i.e. all those who have a right to vote in Cottenham. It can be convened by the Parish Council Chairman, two Parish Councillors or six electors for the area for which it is to be held. The meeting must be held each year between 1st March and 1st June (incl.) and must be after 6pm in the evening!

What is Cottenham’s Annual Parish Meeting like?

Historically Cottenham’s Annual Parish Meeting has been organised by Cottenham Parish Council and held in April or May. It has been an opportunity for the Parish Council and organisations and charities within the village to report on their activities during the year. It has also been an opportunity for residents to ask questions and provide feedback to all those groups. The whole event is very informal and refreshments are served beforehand alongside an opportunity to chat to Parish/District/County Councillors.

Who can attend the meeting?

Anyone may attend but only registered electors may ask questions. An elector may also make suggestions and comment on anything pertinent to the people of Cottenham – this will be welcomed and it is the whole purpose of the meeting.

Who will chair the meeting?

Normally the Chairperson of the Parish Council will chair the meeting otherwise the meeting will elect a Chairperson from amongst those electors present.

Will Parish Councillors be there?

Usually they do attend and will speak as necessary but the purpose of the meeting is to enable the electors to have their say. Councillors will listen and as electors themselves, also have the opportunity to raise questions and make comments if they wish. Our District and County Councillors also attend.

We are forming a working party to look at ways we can reduce plastic use in our homes, the village and beyond!

Maybe you would like to give away some items simply to find a new home for them (‘freecycling’), or sell them or swap them! Or you could sell things on behalf of a charity.

There will be no charge for taking part but you may decide to donate some of your takings to your favourite charity.

Litter pick 7 July 2018 2pm The next village litter pick and cycle path tidy up will be on Saturday 7 July 2018 2pm at the Village Hall.

If you don’t think you’ve got enough to have your own sale or if you are tucked away then you might want to share a yard sale with your friends and neighbours who are in more visible places.

Of course, we also need the bargain-hunters to make a note of the day and come along to see what is on sale. Maps will be available, both online at www.sustainablecottenham. org.uk and printed, showing where the yard sales are and the kind of things they are selling.

Save £560 on your car fuel annually Data has shown that driving smoothly can cut the average annual number of fuel tank refills from 20 to 12. This saving is calculated by the insurer Direct Line from the information provided by ‘telematics’, data sent to the insurer from devices placed in 2000 cars. The data shows policyholders’ driving patterns - including sharpness of acceleration and braking. Those drivers who are smooth in their driving have been shown to be a lower insurance risk and can get better rates and save money on their insurance premiums too.

Want to reduce the amount of single use plastic in your home?

1. Brake to slow – change gear to go. Bring your speed down to the speed you need, and then clutch down and change your gear directly to that needed for the new speed. Much less work for the engine (and you).

2. Plan ahead. Look as far ahead as you can see, not just at the car ahead of you.

3. Look for signals and brake lights at the front of the stream of traffic, so you can slow early and gently.

4. Keep space between your car and the one ahead, to improve your view and allow you to plan your approach to blockages without harsh braking, so you can be ready to move away smoothly.

The same principles will apply to electric cars (without the gear changes)!

COTTENHAM CARES CEILIDH

As I write, snowdrops are blooming in our garden, buds are beginning to swell and the first narcissus flower is about to open. Cottenham Gardeners’ Club AGM will be held next week, unveiling the much anticipated new programme.

On April 21 Cottenham Cares will be hosting its third ceilidh in aid of Save The Children and Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders. The Phoenix Ceilidh Band will be providing the music for dancing, there will be a ploughman’s supper and a bar to keep dancers refreshed. Previous ceilidhs have been a great success so for an enjoyable evening and to support our causes please come along to the Village College at 8:00pm. Ward’s Greengrocers and the Community Centre Coffee Shop have kindly agreed to sell tickets, which are also available from Mary Halls (tel: 252702) and Mick and Sarah Dean (tel: 250037).

Meetings are held at Franklin Gardens Community Room, usually on the last Friday of the month, with refreshments served from 7:30pm, followed by a talk at 7:45pm and finishing with a raffle.

On April 27 Andrew Riley, Horticulturist, will talk about Plants for Difficult Conditions. On 25 May, the speaker is Geoff Hales, a Cambridge based actor, whose subject is Perils of the Plant Hunter.

Club membership costs £14 per annum, which covers 7 speaker meetings, a Garden Party, garden visit and Evening Drinks Party in the summer and our popular New Year Party in January. Guests and new members are very welcome to attend a single meeting at a cost of £2, or £4 for one of the parties. We are very happy to receive donations of prizes for the monthly meetings.

Cottenham Cares was started at the end of 2015 by a group of concerned villagers to raise funds to help the desperate plight of refugees from the war in Syria. Since then, through a variety of events, nearly £25,000 has been raised for Save The Children and Medecins Sans Frontieres/Doctors Without Borders, two charities that do vitally important work wherever and whenever they are needed.

BIRD REPORT A few days ago was February 14th, Valentine’s day, and sometimes called the Birds’ Wedding Day. By chance this was also the second Wednesday in the month when RSPB volunteers lead a wander round the Fen Drayton lakes, looking at birds, plants and anything else of interest. As if by magic, we heard the first efforts of a few birds to practise their spring songs: great tit, chaffinch, dunnock and robins.

It was also a “golden day”, because we saw goldfinches, goldeneye ducks and a goldcrest. That Wednesday was cold, but the next few days were more springlike and round Cottenham I heard blackbirds, mistle thrushes, song thrushes, collared doves, wood pigeons and a green woodpecker, all welcoming the beginning of the mating season. Of course, earlier than this, many of you will have noticed the rooks and jackdaws building nests in the trees on the Green and on the Broad Lane roundabout. I cannot but admire the persistence of the rooks. Often they spend several days constructing a nest, only to have it blown down by strong winds. So they start all over again!

In the last Newsletter I referred to my pleasure in seeing tree sparrows for the first time. In January I had another first. I read in the Cambirds website that hawfinches had appeared in the car park at Wimpole Hall. Not wishing to be called a “twitcher”, I resisted the temptation to drive to Wimpole to see them. However they seemed to set up residence at Wimpole, and I finally found an excuse to go and see these birds. It wasn’t difficult to find them, as other birders were already there. I hadn't realised what handsome birds they are. With a warm brown back, white wing coverts and a large beak, they are easily recognised, if you have the luck to see them. They are shy birds, and tend to appear in these parts only in winter. It made me think just what attractive birds the finch family are. Chaffinch, greenfinch, goldfinch, bullfinch and hawfinch are all quite different from each other and all with wonderful colours. I could even add the trumpeter finch, which we saw in large flocks in early February in Lanzarote. With their bright red beaks and lively movements, they are like mini puffins!

I missed the Big Bird Watch this year, but a number of people have told me that they were disappointed with the small number of birds in their gardens. We have been short of finches and tits, but we have plenty of sparrows, starlings, blackbirds, robins, collared doves, woodpigeons and dunnocks. We have even had a short visit from a moorhen recently!

What about other birds seen in the area,? The lode between Broad Lane and Rampton Bridge has seen an amazing number of interesting birds: yellowhammers, reed buntings, the occasional corn bunting, meadowpipits, kingfisher, a great white egret, little egret, a large flock of golden plover. a green sandpiper, a juvenile peregrine, red legged partridge, lapwing, sparrowhawk, and great spotted woodpecker. A grey wagtail was also present under the Rampton Bridge In Church Lane there have been long-tailed tits;, redpolls have made a welcome appearance; and a woodcock was seen in the early dawn.

Some redpolls have also appeared in one or two gardens, along with the occasional blackcap. Greenfinches seem to be making a comeback too.

On Long Drove there were shovellers and teal and tufted ducks on the lagoon among the other waterbirds, and large numbers of gulls. Gulls are notoriously difficult to identify confidently, but there has definitely been a Caspian gull among the others, and on the Landbeach park an Iceland gull.

And something of a surprise – a small group of roe deer on Long Drove!
