EDITOR’S LETTER

I

Ahead of One’s Time

n March, along with virtually everyone i know, i found myself with extra time on my hands. No more fun dinners at restaurants, no more movie theaters, no more travel, no more going to the gym, no more commuting to the office. I soon realized how lucky I was not to be sick or really even know that many people who became sick, and feeling fortunate, I decided to do something I’ve never done before because I’ve never previously had “enough time.” I signed up to be a volunteer. I was shortly connected with a woman who lives in subsidized housing, has compromised health, and is afraid to go grocery shopping. She is a lovely person and always calls me “dear” and “darlin’,” and I’m surprised that after seven months I’m not able to say that much about her. The journalist in me wants to ask so many questions (Who is she? How did she get to this place?), but I’m sort of okay just shopping for her twice a month, chitchatting for a couple of minutes when I drop off the bags, and calling it a day. I see kindness in her eyes and hear gratitude in her voice, and that’s enough for me right now. I like to think of it as time well spent. My very best wishes for a happy Thanksgiving and a joyous holiday season.

Responding to each project with unique

Design Resource t’s

noveMber, and we are just launcHing our annual New York Design Guide, which usually comes out during New York Design Week in May. Needless to say, we were all under lockdown then, and it seemed that the entire New York metro area was in the doldrums. How different things are now! The unprecedented movement of homeowners and renters both within the city and to the Hamptons, Westchester, Long Island, Connecticut, and the Hudson Valley has increased the need for all of our company’s design guides. Design professionals are in higher demand than ever before, and our new neighbors need to know who they are. The New York Design Guide 2020/2021 makes the introductions, while providing advice on getting your new house together and highlighting our region’s dazzling array of top shops and showrooms. Intentionally sized on the smaller side, the guide can be popped into a tote bag and is easily accessible online, too. Pick one up at a design shop near you, buy a copy 2020/2021 (go to cottagesgardens. ROBERT PASSAL

In this issue’s “Stately Style” (page 50), Manhattan-based decorator Robert Passal transforms a 40-year-old Brookville manse into a showstopping knockout. “Homes with great architecture, like this one, give you a lot of design direction,” he says, “and a feel for the architect’s original vision.” This isn’t the first project to bring Passal to Long Island’s Gold Coast, which he praises for its “rich history of architecture and design. And it’s just 20 miles outside of New York City. Suddenly, you’re in horse country, with lots of open land.”

PAIGE PIERCE

Spectacular Maurice Fatio designed Mediterranean Estate on the Intracoastal with gorgeous architectural detailing. With 17,000+/- total sq. ft. and 7BR/9.4BA, this stunning estate is perfect for entertaining. Highlights include striking plaster moldings, gorgeous library, private dock, and 145 ft.+/- of direct Intracoastal frontage. Fantastic location in Palm Beach’s renowned Estate Section, less than a mile to Worth Avenue’s shops and restaurants.

Exclusive - $37,500,000 | 790SouthCounty.com

For decorator Paige Pierce, the combination of growing up in Los Angeles and later working in Manhattan gave her an intimate understanding of how people live on both coasts. “Clients in New York are interested in formal spaces with lots of layers, whereas clients in California gravitate toward a more pared-down feel,” says Pierce, who brought the best of each together for a young family’s co-op on Central Park West (“Trad Triumph,” page 58). “I appreciate the different aesthetics and try to merge a little bit of everything into my work.”

This issue’s feature on the Caumsett Designer Showhouse (page 76) marks public relations and marketing guru Tony Manning’s 53rd time at the dance. “It’s always fascinating to see how decorators approach rooms differently,” says Manning, who has organized showhouses from the Hamptons to Napa Valley for nearly 20 years. But what makes this one particularly interesting, he notes, is how “a bunch of 21st-century designers took over a 20th-century structure and interpreted it for today. It was an interesting challenge.” —Kelly Velocci

It grows well in sandy soil, is salt tolerant, and you can do a lot with it. For a long time, privet has been a classic symbol of the East End of Long Island, just like blue hydrangeas. Until five or 10 years ago, deer didn’t like it, but then someone told Bambi to try it, and the all-you-can-eat buffet has been open ever since!

How can you differentiate your privet hedge from your neighbors’?

Privet can tolerate frequent shearing—up to three or four times a year if Editors’ note: This year’s gardening column explores some of our region’s most popular plants.

you are especially compulsive, or just once for everyone else, after you let it flower. A healthy privet hedge will grow a foot in a year, too, so go ahead and make hedges, mazes, and ball forms, or cut arches into it. Does privet perform as well in urban environments?

It typically doesn’t get enough sun to do well in a place like New York City. Evergreen plants are really the best option for hedging in the city because of the year-round privacy they provide. Which evergreen plants do you favor?

Japanese hollies work very well. Ilex crenata ‘Schwoebel’ is a first-class, reasonably shade-tolerant holly, although it doesn’t want to grow at the beach, and Ilex crenata ‘Steeds’ is great, too. Both varieties are easy to get at six, seven, or eight feet tall. Yew is becoming less common now, since

W Hedge Your Bets (below) Stiff double rows of privet hedges back a bronze sculpture by Igor Mitoraj. Privet can also be trained into elaborate shapes, such as a spiral studded with alliums (bottom). Alternative hedging materials include hornbeam, pictured as a clipped hedge backing a New York City courtyard (left) and as shaped mature trees flanking a suburban terrace (middle left), and Japanese holly and boxwood (middle right), pictured at two different, complementary heights. deer love it, but it’s great for the city. And some people use Leyland cypress and Arborvitae ‘Green Giant’ for evergreen screening. These trees can take shearing for a number of years, but you can’t do it forever—they just don’t like it. What other options are there for hedges?

Carpinus betulus ‘Fastigiata’, or hornbeam, holds its leaves in the winter, which become the color of brown paper bags. After you’ve sheared them for a while, they have so many twigs it’s like looking through a piece of lace, and the snow on them is particularly beautiful. And boxwood hedges don’t always need to be rectangular—it’s fun to be creative with them. Pleached trees like Acer campestre, a maple, are very British and can be found Stateside now. And there’s a company in Oregon that offers premade hedges in boxes, so in the end we are limited only by our imaginations. What’s the oddest hedge you’ve seen?

On one property, the gardeners sheared doublefile viburnum, which has a beautiful natural shape, into a hedge. And at another location where we had designed a loose row of red-twig dogwood, it was formed into a sharp hedge that was actually pretty cool. I immediately took credit for it! —Alejandro Saralegui

PRIVET: 5 HELPFUL TIPS • Good drainage is key. • Don’t use fertilizer—privet doesn’t really need it. • If you grow privet in a looser, more natural-looking hedge, you can save money by shearing it only once a year. • Privet blossoms have a sweet, delicate fragrance, so wait till the plant flowers in early July before shearing it. • Privet needs sun. A thick, healthy privet hedge will never grow in the shade.

But these seemingly forlorn leftovers are pure gold to the woodworker, who carves them into sculptural tables and stools. “The life of a tree is visible in each of my pieces,” says Kinsella, referring to the wood’s knots, grains, and other special features. “There’s always a lot of character.” Kinsella trained as a boat builder and timber framer before shifting gears to working with more unconventional silhouettes. “It started,” he

I like to play with geometry and architecture.” His Clover table, named for the leaf that inspired its undulating shape, rests atop four pointy legs, whereas his Macaroni bench resembles an upside-down piece of the familiar pasta, supported on fang-like “teeth.” Finding the balance between sculpture and function is important to

Kinsella, whose furniture is sold through the Manhattan showroom BDDW. “It’s fun to work in a gray zone that doesn’t have a clear definition,” he says. Kinsella preps each stump at his home in Rosendale, shaving off bark with a chainsaw, before driving it to his studio in nearby Accord. Once there, the 75- to 100-pound chunk of wood is placed on a lathe and shaped with a chisel, after which Kinsella transfers it to a rolling worktable and carves out the legs with hand tools. Sanding and kilndrying come next, and then the piece is finished with oil or torched to give it a charred appearance. “There’s continuity in the grain because nothing is glued on,” he comments. “You often don’t find that in furniture today.” —Kelly Velocci

W

When he was two years out of college, Robert Passal found himself managing the Hard Rock Cafe on 57th Street in Manhattan. But it was becoming increasingly clear to him that the hospitality industry was not his passion. After taking some time off and doing a bit of creative soul-searching, he focused on shifting gears toward interior design. A designer friend-of-a-friend advised him to get a job at the D&D Building and enroll at FIT, so Passal left his résumé at a handful of showrooms one day and had a job offer by the time he got home. He went to school and worked for John Rosselli until designer Daniel Barsanti of the now-defunct firm Healing Barsanti offered him a junior position. “After the first year,” Passal recounts, “I got to design a pool house, and by the time I went out on my own, in 2000, I had six or seven clients just from that one project.”

By 2007, Passal was working on Park Avenue for New York Yankees infielder Alex Rodriguez and his then-wife, Cynthia Scurtis, who introduced him to her friends Despina and Michael Yarian. The Yarians had bought a large Colonial-style home in Brookville, Long Island, that needed just about everything done to it, although they were simultaneously planning a move to London for Michael’s job in international finance. When they returned, they were ready to start on the house. “Despina came back wanting a very British-influenced design, but cleaner and a bit more contemporary,” recalls Passal. “I like a beautiful, elegant room,” his client confirms, “but we also wanted a house that we could use.” The home, built in 1979, needed to accommodate the couple’s four sons, a large extended family, and frequent social events, like the fundraisers Despina hosts for Kat’s Ribbon of Hope,

the foundation she co-chairs with her sister, Katerina Raptis, a breast cancer survivor. The 8,000-square-foot structure sits on two acres in a lowdensity area in the old estate corridor of northern Nassau County. “The previous owner ran a string of catering halls,” says Passal, “and he had basically furnished the house with their castoffs.” The decorator and his team dove in by stripping about two-thirds of the trim from the interior and refacing the entire exterior, previously painted yellow and now sheathed in a bright Colonial white. The renovation itself proceeded in stages. “We started with the master bedroom, and then the eating area in the kitchen and the dining room,” says Passal. The living room and family room came next. “Even the first spaces we did don’t look dated

today, which can happen easily when you go for the latest thing. It’s a testament to timeless design. Decorating is about more than visual appeal. I like to think we create lifestyles.” “Mike and I both grew up in homes where you couldn’t sit on the furniture or even go into specific rooms, but this is not that kind of house,” says Despina. “The piano in the living room is not for show—our boys use it all the time. And we play backgammon in that room.” As for the soothing color palette, Michael Yarian had told Passal that he likes to “live in the same colors that he wears—basically blues and browns and grays. And that worked for Despina, who has Greek roots and loves the blues commonly found in Greek culture.” Allowing for some spontaneity also kept the design light and airy. “We november/december 2020

saw the embroidered ottomans now in the kitchen at the Century showroom,” the designer recalls, “and Despina said, ‘I have to have those.’ I said, ‘I don’t think they’re going to just let you buy them off the floor.’ But there they are.” “Robert sometimes had to push me on a lot of things,” Despina comments, “but after going through the decorating process, I’m much more inclined to incorporate modern accents. I bought the Damien Hirst butterflies in the dining room all by myself. I was afraid that Robert wasn’t going to like them, but he did!” ✹ 56

A

s an undergraduate student at Tulane University in New Orleans, Paige Pierce marveled at the Big Easy’s intricate façades and rich architectural history. She also enjoyed design magazines and appreciated a well-decorated room. Even so, the California native decided to pursue a career in fashion, and a few years later found herself working on the merchandising team at Diane von Furstenberg in New York, helping to launch the brand’s home line. That’s when the epiphany struck: She realized she had taken the wrong path. “I loved playing with fabrics, colors, and patterns, but fashion is fleeting,” says Pierce, who enrolled in night classes at Parsons School of Design in 2010. “What’s in one second is out the next. But when you’re decorating a home, you’re working with clients to create something long-lasting, a place where families will spend their quality time together.” Shortly thereafter, Pierce joined Sara Gilbane Interiors, making

her way up to senior designer within four years. “Working in a small office, I got a better understanding of the nitty-gritty side of the business,” Pierce recounts. “Sara taught me that the creative aspect is only a small percentage of being a designer. You spend a lot of time managing clients and billing.” When the owners of the Central Park West co-op featured on these pages hired Pierce to deck out their new digs, the interiors had already been gutted and architectural plans by Patrick Gerard Carmody were nearly finalized. (Pierce and the wife had first met when the designer was still working for Gilbane and helping to decorate her bachelorette pad.) The clients leaned toward “traditional and preppy,” Pierce says, and desired rooms that could play multiple roles while steering clear of being precious. As a former New Yorker (she is now based out of Los Angeles), Pierce understood the importance of multifunctional spaces, even in a large apartment such as this one. Take the airy foyer: Depending on the day of the week, it handily doubles as the dining room. An expandable pedestal table holds court november/december 2020

in the center, a brass-and-glass pendant light adds a touch of glamour, and a silvery-blue grasscloth on the walls, replete with hand-painted florals, adds further sophistication. Chairs are pulled from a nearby games table when additional seating is required. “It’s the heart of the house,” says Pierce, “since it leads to all the other rooms. And given its size, it wouldn’t make sense for people to just pass through it.” An adjacent family room, meanwhile, acts as a playroom of sorts, thanks to toy storage in a bookcase. The clients initially expressed interest in lacquering the walls, but Pierce feared that they might become scuffed. The compromise: a high-gloss charcoal that mimics lacquer, providing a bold statement visible from the entry. While striving for practicality, Pierce also employed custom details throughout, which “make the interiors feel elevated.” In the kitchen, a hand-painted zigzag pattern on a curved banquette wall is framed by a playful chevron trim, with ambient light bouncing off its waxy finish. In the living room, too, high-gloss sky blue on the coffered ceiling reflects light into the room while complementing the soothing palette of blues, violets, and creams. Pierce describes the space, with its neatly upholstered seating and valance-lined windows, as the “most formal in the apartment,” yet still “young and fresh,” thanks to a more modern sisal rug and a graphic fabric on a pair of slipper chairs used in contrasting directions. Trim and tailored, yet family-friendly—as a picture of the clients’ kids leaping from the chaise longue proves. “That’s not exactly what I expected to see,” Pierce says with a laugh, “but watching my clients enjoy, and really use, their home is the fun part.” ✹ november/december 2020

L

ittle did Bill Cummings and Bernt Heiberg know that their latest design project would become their personal oasis in a pandemic. Having transformed and flipped several different residential properties in Sag Harbor and Sagaponack, each imbued with their trademark palette of Scandinavian minimalism and understated comfort, the couple decided to branch out to Shelter Island a year ago. They first rented a small house on West Neck Creek and quickly noticed that everything on the other side of the water was bathed in light at sunset. Then a nondescript 1940s-era house became available across the way, and the pair snapped it up. The home they now call the Landing was born. “We always like to give a home a name,” explains Cummings, “and with this house, we felt like we had landed somewhere very special.” The couple

“fell in love with the water and the views,” adds Heiberg. “It reminds me of a summer home in Norway. You have more space to find your Shangri-la. And since we’re on an island, everyone looks out for one another.” The men, whose 30-year-old firm maintains offices in Manhattan and Oslo, are so smitten with Shelter Island that they’ve opened a local atelier where they sell Scandinavian antiques and accessories from such venerable dealers as Dienst + Dotter. Although they hail from vastly different parts of the world, each complements the other in a textbook yin-yang fashion. Cummings grew up in Colorado and San Francisco, where he earned an international business degree before turning to photography and interior design, and Heiberg got his start in his native Norway as an antiques dealer. “Bill says he works with his brain, and I work with my heart,” Heiberg jokes, although the pair couldn’t be more in sync with a design aesthetic that’s november/december 2020

pleasing without pretension. In other words, everyone should feel free to sit on the sofa, even Fia, their miniature long-haired Dachshund. Most of their previous projects involved transforming older historic homes and reinventing them for modern living, but this undertaking presented new challenges. “We wanted to do an updated barn design on the water,” recalls Cummings, “and we thought we could work within the footprint of the existing house, which came with a pool and a dock.” They started by opening up the second level to create a fluid connection between living, kitchen, and dining spaces, all unfolding onto a large deck that frames the water views, as does the nearby master suite. The lower level includes additional 70

bedrooms and bathrooms and a media room that opens to a covered, curtained outdoor lounge area with a dreamy bathtub, spa, and steam shower, plus a row of Adirondack-style chairs for enjoying the coveted sunsets. A vaulted ceiling, stall-like doors, and reclaimed-wood floors from upstate New York further establish the modern barn theme. “Everything is organic,” explains Cummings. “Even the colors are all natural tones. We tend to focus on texture more than colors anyhow, amplifying them by painting everything white.” The materials, Heiberg says, are deeply considered, “from the fieldstone in the fireplace to the stuccoed walls and cast-iron switch plates.” Even more, all the whitewashed minimalism offers a fitting backdrop for the

art collection Cummings inherited from his uncle, 650 pieces by prominent California artists active during the late 20th century. The cozy environs definitely suit the previously peripatetic pair, more so than ever given the tumultuous events of 2020. “When we do new construction,” Cummings says, “we like to create understated, more modest proportions. You can still keep things elegant and have all the bedrooms and bathrooms you want, but it doesn’t need to feel like JFK airport. There’s a newer trend toward authenticity and community, and livable homes.” “The imperfection of perfectionism has changed,” suggests Heiberg. “People are less into having everything matchy-matchy, and they’re more daring now. Our work is more about capturing a lifestyle, so that your home reflects how you live.” True to form, Cummings and Heiberg keep not one but two powerboats at the ready when they feel like taking a spin. “Shelter Island is very much a boating community, and there are a lot of people with vintage cars, too,” says Cummings. “There’s a low-key, understated vibe that’s really special.” Perhaps proof that it’s not so much where you take off from, but where you land. ✹ 74

CIUFFO CABINETRY

KITCHEN Gary Ciuffo crafted a kitchen that’s inspired by the past—think traditional hardware, subway tile, and antique finishes—but embraces modern conveniences. Accordingly, the range was positioned close to the sink, while an old icebox was removed from a cramped pantry and upgraded with a 36-inch Sub-Zero fridge and freezer. “We laid out the kitchen to be more user-friendly than it had been in the past,” Ciuffo says.

The designer kept storage top of mind, adding extra shelving for towels in the laundry room and a skirt to the linen room’s original farmhouse sink to hide cleaning supplies. The Goods (top) A guest room features bedding from Leontine Linens and window treatments from the Shade Store. (above left) The laundry room’s washer and dryer are from Plesser’s Luxury Appliances. (near right) Serena & Lily’s Seahaven toile envelops the linen room. (opposite) Chairs on the rear patio are from Urban Specialty Woods. See Resources.

MAIN STREET NURSERY AND FLORIST

REAR LANDSCAPE In the back of the house, Main Street Nursery and Florist co-owner Richard McKean opted to create an environment fit for alfresco dining. Potted evergreens, strung with lights, accent a custom tea-stained cedar dining table and benches, while hydrangeas and ornamental grasses anchor the brick-paved perimeter. november/december 2020

SUSAN’S KITCHEN

Berry Good A healthful, colorful addition to the traditional holiday table

KALE AND WHEAT BERRY SALAD WITH PICKLED CRANBERRIES For the pickled cranberries: 1 c. red-wine or apple-cider vinegar ¾ c. sugar 1 10-oz. bag frozen cranberries (unthawed) or 12-oz. bag fresh cranberries For the salad: 1 large bunch kale (about 10 oz.), preferably lacinato, cleaned and stemmed 1 shallot, peeled and minced (about ¼ c.) 1T creamy whole-grain mustard 3T reserved pickled-cranberry liquid 3T extra-virgin olive oil ½ tsp. salt 1 c. cooked wheat berries, wild rice, or farro ½ c. toasted pecans 2–3 oz. aged Gouda cheese, shaved thin 1 c. pickled cranberries, drained Make the pickled cranberries: Combine the vinegar, ½ cup water, and sugar in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil and stir to dissolve sugar. Add the cranberries and return to a boil. Lower heat to a simmer and cook until the skins have split, about 2 to 3 minutes. Let cool in the pan, then transfer cranberries and liquid to a container or jar, cover, and chill until ready to use. Make the salad: Shred the kale into thin ribbons and set aside. In a small bowl, stir together the shallot, mustard, a pinch of salt and freshly ground pepper to taste, and pickled-cranberry liquid. Slowly whisk in the oil. Dress the kale with about half the dressing, adding more as needed (don’t overdress it). Season with ½ teaspoon salt and more freshly ground pepper, then rub the dressing into the greens with your hands. Add the wheat berries, pecans, cheese, and pickled cranberries and toss lightly to mix. Serves 4 to 6. —Susan Spungen

Cranberry Surprise This festive salad makes a fine side dish any time of year. Hold on to any leftover pickled cranberries: They keep for weeks.

This refreshing relish is a nice spin on traditional whole-berry cranberry sauce. It can be made up to three days ahead and is great on sandwiches, too. Place 3 cups fresh or partially thawed frozen cranberries, 2 clementines (skin on and cut into 8 pieces), ¼ cup maple syrup, 1 tablespoon sugar, ½ cup shelled pistachios, and 1 large Granny Smith apple (cored and quartered) in a food processor and pulse until finely chopped. Makes 4 cups.

QUOTABLE QUOTES

JUDY ROSS

“As Elvis Costello would say, ‘Oh I just don’t know where to begin.’ I grew up in Queens and moved to Manhattan in 1979. I always wanted to be an artist, so I immediately got involved in the ’80s art scene. No one was really worrying about the making-money part, and rents were cheap, so you could have a club, a studio, or a gallery and just go for it. We were all trading our work and collaborating on projects. I have a great art collection from trades I did with friends for embroidered scarves I had started designing, long before I got into creating textiles for the home market, which eventually became the money-making part for me. “I was a Mudd Club girl, going to see bands like Talking Heads and Blondie, and I also loved Max’s Kansas City, Area, Danceteria, and Save the Robots. Many years later, when I was in my 40s, I decided I wanted to be a mom, but I’ve still got my rock-and-roll persona, bringing up my half-French bilingual sons in this great city. They can recognize a Basquiat or a Schnabel and travel all over town on the subway, which, let’s face it, has gotten 100 percent better than it was in the ’80s. Those boys have added another layer to my full life, and it was important that they understood art, learned to be creative, and got to experience all the culture that the city has to offer. I do sometimes miss the edginess of New York, but it will always be a source of inspiration.”
