The Commonwealth games baton relay comes to Broadway
Interestingly, in the South and West of England there are a number of villages called Buckland, sometimes with an additional name such as Buckland Brewer, Buckland in the Moor and Buckland Monachorum, so- called because they were originally “boke land”, that is land granted by a book or charter and accordingly privately owned. Buckland in Gloucestershire is first mentioned in a charter dated 709 which recorded that the Manor of Bokland was given by Kynred, King of the Mercians to St Peter’s Abbey, Gloucester. The Abbey continued to hold it until the Dissolution of the Monasteries some 800 yéars later.
A church was built here in the 13th century at a time when the early English style of building was evolving into to more stylishly decorated Gothic architecture. The church, like many others in the Cotswolds is dedicated to Saint Michael. The church tower was built in the 14th century, with another section added in the 15th century. This later section includes beautifully carved stone grotesque demons, known commonly as Gargoyles… now an amazing feature at Buckland Church.
The east window contains three panels of beautifully painted glass which are said to have formed part of an earlier window from another building, possibly Hailes Abbey. They represent three of the seven Sacraments - Baptism, Holy Matrimony, and Extreme Unction and were presented to the church by William Grafton, Rector from 1466 until 1510. The glass was restored in 1883 by the workmen of William Morris working under his direction. The artist was living in the area at that time and on visiting the church he noted the windows were in a poor condition, but realizing their fine quality and importance, he offered
his help to perform a much needed restoration. One of Buckland church’s many beautiful features include stunning carved pews in the south aisle were known as “The Shepherds’ Pews”; this was so-called because they were occupied by the shepherds who entered the church with their dogs by the west door at the rear of the church and not through the porch to disturb other members of the congregation.
This information is taken from church records, articles and papers compiled by Robert Camac and others.
With the three towns of Droitwich Spa, Evesham and Pershore together with nearly 100 villages and hamlets including the beautiful Broadway, visitors can be forgiven for not having explored all the year round wonders available to them. It’s an area of sheer diversity; not only in its surroundings, but also with its offering through unique shopping experiences, entertaining attractions, stunning scenery and a plethora of festivals – great for those looking to escape the bustling cities.
The central location – straddling the M5 and nestled snuggly alongside the Cotswolds – makes Worcestershire’s Vale & Spa a very appealing visitor destination no matter what your interests or length of stay are. The mix between urban and rural settings provide a fascinating experience as you travel between the two with ease. With stunning countryside and scenic Cotswold characteristics the area offers truly breath-taking encounters throughout the year.
The area is very proud of its food and drink with a wealth of locally grown and produced items. This fresh produce is arguably best experienced at one of the numerous farm shops, but if you’d prefer to taste the finished product rather than buying the raw materials, there is an assortment of world-wide cuisines available. Locally produced alcoholic and soft drinks can be savoured at canal or riverside hostelries and cafes during the
warmer months or next to log fires during the cooler periods.
Quality is of the upmost importance in the area, so alongside numerous award-winning businesses, the district is blessed with five Green Flag status parks, providing a perfect retreat for children and adults alike. Each has its own characteristics, whether it be in the vicinity of an historic building or monument, next to wonderful waterways, or just generally bustling with heritage.
When suggesting activities for a day out in Worcestershire’s Vale & Spa, visit our website for inspiration - www.valeandspa.co.uk – explore in more detail what you can enjoy, whether it be an expansion of what you’ve seen here, or captivating you with something new .
Whenever and whatever you choose to visit, you’ll be met with vibrant communities, outstanding natural beauty and an area steeped in history with many stories to tell. Take the time to explore the area’s hidden gems – you won’t be disappointed.
Events are the backbone of the district over the summer months, where you’ll struggle to find a weekend without a quirky festival taking place. Each area has its own distinctive set of events, many focussing on their local heritage, meaning you’re in for a unique experience.
A comprehensive listing of the events taking place throughout the district can be found on our website at:
www.valeandspa.co.uk/events
Some of the upcoming major events are highlighted over the next few pages.
Every year we produce a physical What’s On Guide, listing the events we’re aware of. These can be picked up in any local tourist information centre or literature racks that you’ll see at supermarkets, service stations, attractions and the like.
We will shortly be releasing the Autumn/ Winter edition containing events and festivals taking place over the festive season. Keep an eye out for this or, alternatively, sign up to our e-newsletter by emailing info@valeandspa.co.uk to be notified when the guides can be picked up or downloaded.
Worcestershire’s Vale & Spa isn’t just great for festivals – there’s plenty to see over the entire year. Being a mainly rural district, stunning scenery isn’t far away with the picturesque countryside, making walking and cycling a must. Our towns and the beautiful village of Broadway also provide excellent opportunities for shopping with many independent businesses offering that unique gift.
Don’t just take our word for it though, take a look through the videos to get a taster yourself of what the area has to offer.
Grab a drink, put your feet up and enjoy our feature length video to give you inspiration for your next visit within Worcestershire’s Vale & Spa. You’ll also find much more information and a range of attractions on our website.
Privileged to possess so many heritage highlights, anyone into their history will have a fascinating time with an Abbey, historic architecture, period buildings, characterful High Streets and plenty of local heritage to explore.
Spa is in our title for a reason – water is all around us! With the canal in Droitwich Spa to the River Avon through Pershore and Evesham, they can be explored by foot, bike or boat with other water-based activities available too.

They do catch mice and voles, but only on rare occasions. Although the Grass Snake rarely bites, it can put on a seemingly ag gressive defence if cornered, inflating the body, hissing loudly and striking with the mouth closed.
There are only three native snake species in the UK and you’re most likely to see them out in the countryside, or sometimes in your garden seeking water during the warm summer weather.
During the recent hot weather, this beautiful adult grass snake found its way into a cotswold garden and became a little trapped under patio seating, and struggled to find its way out. The owners carefully caught it and set it free into the grass and trees near to their garden.
The three native snake species in the UK are:
Adder (Vipera berus) - widespread but declining across the UK and the only venomous species.
Grass snake (Natrix helvetica)widespread in England and Wales, including gardens.
Smooth snake (Coronella austriaca)localised mainly to the south of England heaths and countryside.
We take a look at the fascinating snake species native to the Great Britain
Grass snakes are usually an olive green colour, with large eyes and round pupils and can be over a meter long. They have a distinct collar behind their heads and are also the only native snake species to lay eggs. Grass snakes are the snakes you’ll see in your garden, as they sometimes like to use compost heaps to lay their eggs. A grass snake will have soft leathery eggs.
The adder has a distinctive zig-zag pattern down their back, with red eyes and a vertical pupil, and can grow to around 70cm.
They’re the only venomous species of snake in the UK.
The smooth snake is the least widespread, localised to the south of England and found in heath habitats. They’re the smallest species, growing to only around 55cm in length. They’re typically a greyish brown in colour, have a dark stripe down the side of their face, a heart-shaped pattern on their head and a pattern of spots and bars along their back.
While the adder’s bite can be very painful and the venom does have the potential to be fatal, no one has died from an adder bite in Britain for over 20 years. Effects may include: shock; severe pain at the location of the bite; Swelling, redness and bruising at the location of the bite; nausea and vomiting; diarrhoea; itchy lumps on the skin; swelling of the lips, tongue, gums and throat; breathing difficulties; mental confusion, dizziness or fainting; irregular heartbeat. In a small number of people, a snake bite can trigger a severe reaction, known as anaphylactic shock. If bitten you should seek immediate medical advice.
If you see a native British snake in your garden or the wild, please leave them undisturbed, they will always try to avoid human contact and will nearly always slither away into the safety of the undergrowth.

A serious fire was swiftly doused thanks to some quick thinking locals and the Chipping Campden fire Brigade.
The recent summer heatwave has caused a spate of blazes in and around the Cotswolds and the Vale-Of-Evesham. Outbreaks of fires have caused havoc for landowners as their tinder-dry fields catch alight during this years superhot summer heatwave. Fire officials are asking that people take extra care when using their barbecues, and please make sure that glass bottles and rubbish are properly disposed of and cigarettes are put out and not thrown to the ground whilst still lit.
We can all do our bit to help during this beautiful weather.
