Emergency Medical Responder The EMR course is for BC Occupational First Aid Level 3 attendants who wish to upgrade their skills to become an EMR attendant for the ambulance service and prepares the candidate for the provincial examination. This course meets the NOCP guidelines as set out by the Paramedics Association of Canada. Note that most employers in the North are asking for minimum of EMR. Note: You must pick up books from your local campus and complete pre-course work before the first day of class.

Red Cross Basic Life Support (BLS) Basic Life Support (BLS) is an important step in the survival of a person who suffers a cardiac arrest incident.

The Canadian Red Cross BLS course is designed for in-facility and pre-hospital care providers, to build participant confidence in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills and provide the important steps to perform a rapid assessment, perform Basic Life Support (BLS) skills, rapid defibrillation, as well as oxygen therapy and airway management. Mental Health First Aid Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) trained employees will be equipped to recognize the signs and symptoms of mental health issues and provide help to a person developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis, including those related to substance use. The course will also work on reducing the stigma around mental illness and create mental wellness within the workplace. SAFETY Basic Fall Protection This eight-hour course includes theory and practical application exercises to introduce the student to standards for fall protection which meet or exceed both Alberta and BC Occupational Health and Safety standards. This program teaches all core concepts of fall protection from a regulatory and standards perspective including: fall protection requirements for workers and employers, hierarchy of fall protection, methods of hazard identification, examining various fall protection and fall arrest systems, equipment care and maintenance and understanding the ABCs of a personal fall protection system. S100/S185 This course was developed by BC Forest Service Protection Branch and is facilitated by a certified instructor.

Examines fire behaviour, fire line safety, tools and equipment, fundamentals of fire suppression and water delivery using portable pumps and gravity systems. All workers fighting fires must be trained and then retrained annually in S100. Birth Doula Studies Program – Online + Practicum The demand for professionally trained birth doulas is increasing. Parents are recognizing the benefits of having an educated and supportive professional at their side during the childbirth process. Whether you have a passion for supporting families or wish to use this is as a stepping stone to explore other perinatal professions, the Birth Doula Studies Program is the perfect choice!

Online theory for 12 weeks is the starting foundation of the program and covers three course modules: • The Doula as a Holistic Birth Practitioner • The Doula During Childbirth • The Baby and The Business and You Practicum components take place (up to six months and one year from the program start date) and are designed to supplement the knowledge gained from the online course modules. Haul Truck Operator Program This four-week program offers an introduction to safe and efficient operation of a haul truck in a surface mining or oil sands site. Haul truck operators are in demand in mines across Canada, including the Alberta oil sands. Haul truck operator is the common entry-level job in a mine site. Utilizing state-of-the-art motion-based simulators, classroom-led and online modules include safety and operating procedures, warning systems and protocols, assessing and reacting to alarms, emergency scenarios, walk-around inspections and cab controls, start-up, shutdown, braking, steering, tire care, dumping and loading procedures. Our program uses simulators for both Komatsu and Caterpillar haul trucks, which are most commonly used in large surface pit operations in Canada. The program includes instruction in the following safety tickets: Mine Supervisor Certificate (Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in BC), Standard First Aid for Industry (two-day), WHMIS and Construction Safety Training System (CSTS).

Spill Response: Due Diligence Certification Spill Response - Due Diligence Certification (SRDD) is an applied, field-based course focusing on inland and freshwater applications and conditions. The SRDD provides course participants with the skills, knowledge, and abilities to confidently and effectively prevent and, if needed, respond to and manage a potential spill on a job site.

The SRDD is recognized by BC Ministry of Environment as an essential “due diligence” training course for anyone responding to an incident involving petroleum hydrocarbons. The SRDD course complies with WorkSafeBC requirements to meet the standards that will ensure adequate trainee knowledge to assess and respond in a safe and responsible way.

This two-day course includes both classroom theory and field-based exercises. The SRDD course reviews the following: • Types of assessments • Legal issues • Fate and effects of spilled product • Training in fuel transport • Storage and dispensing

Wildlife Survey Methods Wildlife Survey Field Methods (WSFM) is an applied three-day course that provides an introduction and overview for nine ground-based and five aerial-based wildlife survey methods. Using classroom instruction, demonstrations and field exercises, participants learn to conduct ground-based surveys using direct observation of individuals and measurement of animal sign such as scat and tracks. The aerial surveys are confined to classroom instruction only. Survey methods introduced are Resources Information Standards Committee (RISC) protocols, but also include methods not included in the RISC library (e.g. camera traps, basic reading of tracks, scat and sign). Course material is currently targeted on the large ungulates and carnivores of BC. Deciphering Dementia: Defined Dementia is on the rise and we as a community and society have largely been taught so little about this complex and challenging category of disease. We will also discuss the link to genetics and links to many environmental and lifestyle factors. Tai Chi Introductory Weekend Seminar What is Tai Chi? It is a traditional East Asian practice, designed to improve and promote overall physical health and mental calmness. Tai Chi is practiced as a series of specific movements designed to result in greater physical relaxation, increased mobility/ flexibility, improved balance, a greater sense of wellbeing, and an increased level of physical energy all necessary for long-term health. This is for anyone who is interested in learning about the practice of Tai Chi, or for those who have some previous experience with it, but who wish to expand their knowledge.

LOST SKILLS AND ART FORMS Blacksmithing - Basics Offered in partnership with Ferrebral Ironworks and College of the Rockies.

This nine-hour course gives the complete beginner an inside view of the artistic world of blacksmithing. With a mixture of practical and hands-on training, students can learn about the basics of forging and forge safety delivered alongside some storytelling and historical insights. Questions are encouraged and students can choose which of the three project options to complete - maybe for that special someone who would appreciate a hand-crafted gift. Project options are: coat rack (small, three-hook), two-leaf door pulls (medium-sized), or door knocker. Please call 250-489-8242 with project selection at least one week prior to course date. Student requirements available upon registration. Recommended age 16 years or older. Participants under 19 MUST have guardian sign release form.

Blacksmithing - Building From Plans This blacksmithing class will use a combination of fabrication and forging techniques. Utilize a basic set of plans to build a project from scratch to take home with you. The more difficult forging processes will be demonstrated in this class. Forge and anvil space will be shared alongside your classmates.

Prerequisite: Familiarity with the basics is expected (by either having prior forging experience or having taken the Blacksmithing Basics course).

OUTDOORS Avalanche Skills Training Each year increasing number of skiers, snowboarders and climbers venture into the mountains to enjoy snow-related outdoors recreation. Regrettably, each year some of these people die in avalanches. Avalanche Skills Training (AST) programs are an essential first step to safe backcountry use in the winter. Course topics include avalanche terrain recognition, avalanche climatology, snow stability evaluation, alpine touring practices, avalanche accidents and search and rescue techniques. This course is instructed by a qualified CAA Professional Member. This certificate is a compulsory first step towards further professional and recreational avalanche training.

Note: You must be 16 years of age to enroll in this course. Students must also bring $25 to purchase the course manual. For the field day, you will need to bring your own avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel as well as snowshoes and skis or split board with skins for travel on deep snow.

Bear Aware What should you do if you see a bear? What is the difference between a black and grizzly bear? What does a bear safe campsite look like? Whether working or playing in the outdoors, so many activities take place in bear country. Learning what you need to know, from the basics of bear safety and knowledge, to using bear defence equipment will make you much safer. This course explains in detail what you need to know through classroom and hands-on practice. Make certain you have a good understanding of bear safety and are able to travel safely in bear country and stay safe in the event of an encounter.
