ONE PAGE CV I seem to have trouble holding down a job. Here’s my story so far: • I got a job fixing kilns – Within a week I was fired. • I got a job performing circumcisions. On my first day I slipped and got the sack. • I joined the army and immediately got my marching orders. • On my first day at the car factory, my colleague was asked to attach the bonnet and I got the boot. • I got a job as a taxi driver and drove customers away. • I got a job as a tree feller. They gave me the axe. • I got a job as a professional bungee jumper. They let me go. • I arrived to fit a letterbox. They soon showed me the door. • On my first day as a professional poker player I was given my cards. • I got a job packing bags at a butcher. On my first day they gave me the chop. • I once managed a prostitute tug-of-war team until I got the heave-ho. • I got a job testing nylon carpets for static electricity. At the end of my first day I was discharged.

It’s a
. . . r a e Y p a e L The "leap day" of 29th February exists for purely astronomical reasons, but has always prompted less scientific curiosities. Here are 10 things to consider - for one day only. Until 2020, that is...! ONE: The leap year's extra day is necessary because of the "messiness" of our Solar System. One Earth year (a complete orbit around the Sun) does not take an exact number of whole days (one complete spin of the Earth on its axis). In fact, it takes 365.2422 days, give or take.
TWO: Until Julius Caesar came to power, people observed a 355-day calendar with an extra 22-day month every two years. But it was a convoluted solution to the problem and feast days began sliding into different seasons. So Caesar ordered his astronomer, Sosigenes, to simplify things. Sosigenes opted for the 365-day year with an extra day every four years to scoop up the extra hours. This is how the 29 February was born. It was then fine-tuned by Pope Gregory XIII . THREE:
18
Every fourth year is a leap year, as a rule of thumb. But that's not the end of the story. A year that is divisible by 100, but not by 400, is not. So 2000 was a leap year under the Gregorian calendar, as was 1600. But 1700, 1800 and 1900 are not leap years. The year is 365 days and a quarter long - but not exactly. If it was exactly, then you could say it was every four years. But it is very slightly less than that. The answer arrived at by Pope Gregory XIII and his astronomers when they intro-
duced the Gregorian calendar in 1582. It will need to be rethought in about 10,000 years' time though. But by then mankind might have come up with a new system.
FOUR: Why is February 29th a leap year day? All the other months have 30 or 31 days, but February suffered from the ego of Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus, Under Julius Caesar, February had 30 days, but when Caesar Augustus was emperor
February 2016 Costa Link Magazine.qxp_Editorial Layout 24/01/16 7:12 pm Page 19
he was peeved that his month August - had only 29 days, whereas the month named after his predecessor Julius July - had 31. Caesar pinched a couple of days for August to make it the same as July. And it was poor old February that lost out.
FIVE:
The tradition of a woman proposing on a leap year has been attributed to various historical figures. One, although much disputed, was St Bridget in the 5th Century. She is said to have complained to St Patrick that women had
to wait too long for their suitors to propose. St Patrick then supposedly gave women a single day in a leap year to pop the question - the last day of the shortest month.
SIX: A prayer has been written by a female cleric for people planning a leap year day marriage proposal. The prayer, for 29th February, asks for blessings on the engaged couple. It reminds them that wedding plans should not overtake preparations for a lifetime together.
posed to be 29th but 24th February, which hails back to the time of Julius Caesar. A refusal to marry by Danish men means they must give the woman 12 pairs of gloves. In Finland, it is not gloves but fabric for a skirt and in Greece, marriage in a leap year is considered unlucky, leading many couples to avoid it.
EIGHT: The chance of being born on a leap day is often said to be one in 1,461. Four years is 1,460 days and adding one for the leap year you have 1,461. So, odds of 1/1,461.
SEVEN:
The practice of women proposing in a leap year is different around the world. In Denmark, it is not sup-
Babies born on 29th February are known as "leapers" or "leaplings".
NINE: Explorer Christopher Columbus
used the lunar eclipse of 29th February 1504 to his advantage during his final trip to the West Indies. After several months of being stranded with his crew on the island of Jamaica, relations with the indigenous population broke down and they refused to continue helping with food and provisions. Columbus, knowing a lunar eclipse was due, consulted his almanac and then gathered the native chiefs on 29th February. He told that God was to punish them by painting the Moon red. During the eclipse, he said that God would withdraw the punishment if they starting cooperating again. The panicked chiefs agreed and the Moon began emerging from its shadow.
TEN:
Also of a supernatural nature, on 29th February 1692 the first warrants were issued in the Salem witchcraft trials in Massachusetts.

from beyond the grave A tourist in Vienna is going through a graveyard and all of a sudden he hears music. No one is around, so he starts searching for the source. He finally locates the origin and finds it is coming from a grave with a headstone that reads "Ludwig van Beethoven, 1770- 1827". Then he realises that the music is the Ninth Symphony and it is being played backward! Puzzled, he leaves the graveyard and persuades a friend to return with him. By the time they arrive back at the grave, the music has changed. This time it is the Seventh Symphony, but like the previous piece, it is being played backward. Curious, the men agree to consult a music scholar. When they return with the expert, the Fifth Symphony is playing, again backward.
December - 1770 March - 1827
32
The expert notices that the symphonies are being played in the reverse order in which they were composed, the 9th, then the 7th, then the 5th. By the next day the word has spread and a crowdhas gathered around the grave. They are all listening to the Second Symphony being played backward. Just then the graveyard's caretaker ambles up to the group. Someone in the group asks him if he has an explanation for the music. "I would have thought it was obvious" the caretaker says: "He's decomposing.

the dreaded pretzel A Russian and an Irish wrestler were set to square off for the Olympic gold medal. Before the final match, the Irish wrestler's trainer came to him and said 'Now, don't forget all the research we've done on this Russian. He's never lost a match because of this 'pretzel' hold he has. It ties you up in knots. Whatever you do, do not let him get you in that hold! If he does, you're finished.' The Irishman nodded in acknowledgment. As the match started, the Irishman and the Russian circled each other several times, looking for an opening. All of a sudden, the Russian lunged forward, grabbing the Irishman and wrapping him up in the dreaded pretzel hold. A sigh of disappointment arose from the crowd and the trainer buried his face in his hands, for he knew all was lost. He couldn't watch the inevitable happen. Suddenly, there was a Long, High Pitched Scream, then a cheer from the crowd and the trainer raised his eyes just in time to watch the Russian go flying up in the air. His back hit the mat with a thud and the Irishman collapsed on top of him, making the pin and winning the match. The trainer was astounded. When he finally got his wrestler alone, he asked 'How did you ever get out of that hold? No one has ever done it before!' The wrestler answered 'Well, I was ready to give up when he got me in that hold but at the last moment, I opened my eyes and saw this pair of testicles right in front of my face. I had nothing to lose so with my last ounce of strength, I stretched out my neck and bit those babies just as hard as I could.' The trainer exclaimed 'That's what finished him off?' 'Not really. You'd be amazed how strong you get when you bite your own nuts.

A lady goes to her priest one day and tells him, "Father, I have problem. I have two female parrots that used to live in a house of ill repute, but they only know how to say one thing." "What do they say?" the priest inquired. They say, "Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?" "That's obscene!" the priest exclaimed, then he thought for a moment. "You know," he said, "I may have a solution to your problem. I have two male talking parrots, which I have taught to pray and read the Bible. Bring your two parrots over to my house, and we'll put them in the cage with Francis and Peter. My parrots can teach your parrots to praise and worship, and your parrots are sure to stop saying... that phrase in no time." "Thank you," the woman responded, "this may very well be the solution." The next day, she brought her female parrots to the priest's house. As he ushered her in, she saw that his two male parrots were inside their cage holding rosary beads and praying. Impressed, she walked over and placed her parrots in with them. After a few minutes, the female parrots cried out in unison: "Hi, we're hookers! Do you want to have some fun?" There was stunned silence. Shocked, one male parrot looked over at the other male parrot and exclaimed, "Put the beads away, Frank. Our prayers have been answered!"

A Man’s World
THE VOICE OF EXPERIENCE…
A young lad gets home from school and says. “Dad I’ve got a part in the school play as a man who’s been married for 25 years.” His dad replies. “Never mind. Son. Maybe next time you’ll get a speaking part.”
MY SEARCH HISTORY…
I recently read an article in Science Weekly about how we treat asthma. It said that scientists at Cambridge have discovered that certain dermatological products, such as facial creams, can soothe the rough epithelium of the trachea that is common in those who suffer from regular asthma attacks. Apparently, the cream acts on the deep layers of tissue on the mouth and trachea, reducing inflammation permanently. And that I told my wife is why you found words like “rough”, “deep”, “through”, and “facial” in my Internet search history.
STUMPED…
Colin was a confirmed cricket fan. Even on the day his wife was giving birth, he was watching the Test Match at Lord’s. The match began, two quick wickets fell. Colin was disappointed, so he decided to check in on his wife. He picked up the phone and he meant to call the hospital but accidentally called the cricket hotline. He asked the man on the other end, thinking he was a doctor, “ So what’s going on?” The man replied, “it’s still happening: two are out, nine are left and the last one was a duck!”

GADGETS &Gizmo’s The IPhone 7 is rumoured to be the first phone to use Li-FI - essentially a faster version of Wi-Fi, using infra-red and near ultraviolet spectrum instead of radio frequency waves to reach mega fast speeds. Prototype hardware has already clocked an incredible 224 GIGABITS per second - that’s 100x the speed of the fastest Wi-Fi networks. Apple & Beats are apparently working together on a set of wireless earbuds, which can be charged by a protective carrying case. It would have its own battery too, so you don't have to be plugged in all the time to keep listening. If the rumours are true, they should launch alongside the new iPhone in September this year.

When one of the fake trees collapsed, the drone slowed down and ably navigated over it.

All the latest in the world of tech and gaming... UHD Blu-ray is getting closer by the day, but we're only now just getting a clue as to how much each disc will set you back. Lionsgate Sony, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros have already announced their first run UHD discs. There's going to be two-tier pricing instead, with older titles carrying a suggested 20₏ price and new releases costing nearly twice as much at 40₏. That's twice what you'll pay for a new release Blu-ray. That's true of the players as well as the discs. Samsung's UBD-K8500 UHD Blu-ray player is available to pre-order in the US for US$400 right now, and Panasonic will only commit to "below US$1000" for its player, which isn't due until the autumn.

Francis was out hunting when he tripped over. His gun discharged, shooting him in the genitals. Later at the hospital, his doctor said, “I have some good news and some bad news. The good news is that you are going to be okay. The damage was only in your groin area and we were able to remove all of the shot.” “What’s the bad news?” asked Francis. “The bad news is that the shot left a lot of small holes in your man sausage. I’ll have to refer you to my sister.” Francis asked, “Why, is your sister a plastic surgeon?’ “No,” answered the doctor, “She is a flute player in the London Symphony Orchestra. She’s going to teach you where to put your fingers so you don’t pee in your eyes.”

Don’t Let a Cold Get You Down...
We’re more than a decade into the 21st century, and scientists are no closer to that most elusive goal: a cure for the common cold. If anything, cold viruses seem more formidable than ever. Until recently, researchers thought there were about 100 varieties of rhinoviruses, the most common cause of the common cold. Now, using advanced screening tests, they’ve discovered a whole new group of rhinoviruses over 200! The sheer number of different cold viruses is the reason we keep catching colds, season after season. On average most people get three to four colds a year, surveys suggest. Children average six rhinovirus infections a year. (That explains why people who have kids or spend a lot of time with them are at heightened risk of catching colds.)
HOW TO AVOID GETTING A COLD Even if they haven’t found a cure for colds, researchers have learned plenty about how cold viruses spread. Coughing and sneezing are still the top ways of giving someone else your cold. People can breathe in the germs from your cough or sneeze. Rhinoviruses can also be spread by touching contaminated surfaces, shaking hands, and other personal contact. If you get cold viruses on your fingers, you might touch your nose or eyes -- the two places the virus can most easily enter your body. From there, cold viruses quickly reach nasal passages, where they take hold and begin multiplying. HARDY COLD VIRUSES ABOUND: DON’T TOUCH! Rhinoviruses can survive on doorknobs, table tops, shopping cart handles, and other surfaces for 24 hours or more.
COLD & FLU BUGS & HOW TO STOP GETTING THEM
PREVENT FLU THE NO. 1 WAY: GET VACCINATED The surest way to avoid influenza is to get vaccinated. Flu shots are designed to match each year’s specific circulating strains. While a flu shot doesn't work 100% of the time, it's still your best bet for avoiding the flu and possibly preventing complications, like pneumonia.
BOOSTING IMMUNITY WITH SLEEP AND POSITIVE THINKING Getting a good night’s sleep just might bolster your defenses against colds and perhaps flu bugs as well. There’s growing evidence of a link between sleep and a healthy immune system. A 2009 experiment by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University suggests that the more sleep you get, the better your chances of fighting off respiratory bugs. The scientists recruited 153 healthy men and women who agreed to be quarantined and then have cold viruses injected into their nostrils. Over the following 5 days, those who slept less than 7 hours were nearly three times more likely to come down with colds than those who racked up 8 hours of sleep or more. The researchers also measured what sleep scientists call sleep efficiency, a measure of how deeply people sleep. The better the quality of their sleep, the more likely the people were to fight off colds. Maintaining a positive outlook may also help bolster immune systems. The same research team reported in 2006 that volunteers with a positive outlook on life -- people who were generally happy, lively, and calm were better able to fight off both cold and flu viruses than people who were anxious, hostile, or depressed.

SEVEN BENEFITS OF DRINKING WATER… OUR BODIES ARE AROUND 60% WATER, GIVE OR TAKE. IT IS COMMONLY RECOMMENDED TO DRINK 1) IT HELPS TO MAXIMIZE PHYSICAL PERFORMANCE: EIGHT 8-OUNCE GLASSES OF WATER PER DAY (THE 8×8 RULE)...
If we do not stay hydrated, physical performance can suffer. This is particularly important during intense exercise or high heat. Dehydration can have a noticeable effect if you lose as little as 2% of your body’s water content. However, it is not uncommon for athletes to lose up to 6-10% of their water weight via sweat.
2) HYDRATION HAS A MAJOR EFFECT ON ENERGY LEVELS & BRAIN FUNCTION:
Your brain is strongly influenced by hydration status. Studies show that even mild dehydration (1-3% of body weight) can impair many aspects of brain function.
3) DRINKING WATER MAY HELP TO PREVENT AND TREAT HEADACHES:
Dehydration can trigger headaches and migraines in some people. Several studies have shown that water can relieve headaches in those who are dehydrated. However, this appears to depend on the type of headache.
4) DRINKING MORE WATER MAY HELP RELIEVE CONSTIPATION:
Constipation is a common problem, characterized by infrequent bowel movements and difficulty passing stool. Increasing fluid intake is often recommended as a part of the treatment protocol, and there is some evidence to back this up. Low water consumption appears to be a risk factor for constipation in both young and elderly individuals. Carbonated water shows particularly promising results for constipation relief, although it’s not known why.
5) DRINKING WATER MAY HELP TREAT KIDNEY STONES:
Urinary stones are painful clumps of mineral crystal that form in the urinary system. The most common form is kidney stones, which form in the kidneys. Higher fluid intake increases the volume of urine passing through the kidneys, which dilutes the concentration of minerals, so they are less likely to crystallize and form clumps.
6) DRINKING WATER HELPS PREVENT HANGOVERS:
A hangover refers to the unpleasant symptoms experienced after drinking alcohol. Alcohol is a diuretic, so it makes you lose more water than you take in. This can lead to dehydration. Although dehydration is not the main cause of hangovers, it can cause symptoms like thirst, fatigue, headache and dry mouth. A good way to reduce hangovers is to drink a glass of water between drinks, and to have at least one big glass of water before going to bed.
7) DRINKING MORE WATER CAN HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS:
This is due to the fact that water can increase satiety and boost your metabolic rate. This means that drinking 2 liters of water every day can increase your total energy expenditure by up to 96 calories per day. The timing is important too, and drinking water half an hour before meals is the most effective. It can make you feel more full, so that you eat fewer calories. It is actually best to drink water cold, because then the body will use additional energy (calories) to heat the water to body temperature. 50

Medical Mayhem
Testing Times...
Mandy went for some tests at the doctor’s. The nurse handed her a specimen bottle and said, “you can use that room there on your right. The doctor will be with you in a few minutes.” A white later, Mandy came out and handed the empty container back to the nurse, saying, “Thanks, but they had a toilet in there, so I didn’t need this after all.”
Interesting Movements...
A little old lady went to see here doctor to see what could be done for the terrible constipation she was suffering from. “It’s terrible,” she said, I haven’t moved my bowels for a week.” “ Have you done anything about it?” asked the doctor. “Of course,” she replied, “ I sit in the bathroom for an hour in the morning and again for an hour in the evening.” “No,” the doctor said, “I mean do you take anything?” “Of course,” she answered. “I take a book.”

PRINTED CARS! D 3
Aeroblade: Employing a unique use of vertical structures to support external surfaces, catering to the inability of current 3D printing processes to bridge horizontal gaps, this multi-layer design really has the ‘wow’ factor, and wouldn’t look out of place as the next Batmobile.
3DPCX: Creative structural supports – including the spine down the centre – and a clean passenger compartment are defining elements of the 3DPCX concept. By incorporating simplicity and innovation via smart design and smart deployment of vehicle features, the 3DPCX brings the openness of the road inside the vehicle.”
LM Supernova: The LM Supernova incorporates interior design elements that are both functional and lightweight. According to Woods, “The Supernova looks tough and fast, like a Formula 1 racecar.”
The “Blade” is light, sleek and with an acceleration of 0-100 k.p.h. in 2.2 seconds — incredibly fast, just like you’d want any supercar to be. The car, made by San Francisco–based Divergent, has a chassis created entirely using a 3-D printer. As a result, the whole vehicle weighs just under 1,400 lb. The 700HP engine that can run on compressed natural gas makes it one of the most environment-friendly cars around. The company will produce a certain number of cars initially, but eventually plans to sell its technology to smaller manufacturers to make their own vehicles. Next-generation manufacturing takes on a 50year-old icon as ORNL researchers transform the classic Shelby Cobra car into a vision of the future. The 3D printed car incorporates new engine, battery, and fuel cell technologies; hybrid system designs; and power electronics and wireless charging systems. Even Audi is getting in on the 3d printing craze. They just made a working half size replica of their 1938 Grand Prix racer. Looks like a lot of fun doesn't it? More importantly, if Audi is getting into 3d printing, it means there is way more to this technology then meets the eye. 54

WELL I NEVER KNEW THAT....!
Some
horrible histories… Here are some fascinating facts from years past explaining some of the sayings and customs we have today! • There is an old Hotel/Pub in Marble Arch, London, which used to have a gallows adjacent to it. Prisoners were taken to the gallows (after a fair trial of course) to be hanged. The horse-drawn dray, carting the prisoner, was accompanied by an armed guard, who would stop the dray outside the pub and ask the prisoner if he would like ''ONE LAST DRINK''. If he said YES, it was referred to as ONE FOR THE ROAD. If he declined, that Prisoner was ON THE WAGON. • They used to use urine to tan animal skins, so families used to all pee in a pot and then once a day it was taken and sold to the tannery. If you had to do this to survive you were
"piss poor", but worse than that were the really poor folk, who couldn't even afford to buy a pot, they "Didn't have a pot to pee in" and were the lowest of the low. • In the 1500’s most people got married in June, because they took their yearly bath in May and they still smelled pretty good by June. However, since they were starting to smell, brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. Hence the custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married. Sometimes they could obtain pork, which made them feel quite special. When visitors came over they would hang up their bacon, to show off. It was a sign of wealth that a man could, "Bring home the bacon." They would cut off a little to share with guests and would all sit around talking and ''chew the fat''. More next month...

I’ve seen the light...
An 80-year-old man went for his annual checkup, and the doctor said, "Friend, for your age you're in the best shape I've seen." The old feller replied, "Yep. It comes from clean living. I know I live a good, clean, spiritual life." The doctor asked, "What makes you say that?"
The old man replied, "If I didn't live a good, clean life, the Lord wouldn't turn the bathroom light on for me every time I get up in the middle of the night." The docotor was concerned. "You mean when you get up in the night to go to the bathroom, the Lord himself turns on the light for you?"
"Yep," the old man said. The doctor didn't say anything else, but when the old man's wife came in for her check up, he felt he had to let her know what her husband said. "Your husband's in fine physical shape," the doctor said, "but I'm worried about his mental condition. He told me that every night when he gets up to go to the bathroom, the Lord turns the light on for him."
"Aha!!!" she exclaimed. "So HE'S the one who's been peeing in the refrigerator!"
