re we at last beginning to get back to business now that August is over and children are returning to school? Many residents certainly hope so, as we also hope for lower temperatures during September. What a rollercoaster month it has been too, as all we seem to have been hearing about is Brexit! This forever talked-about subject has even attracted the BBC to our Coasts to hear the views of all the expats living here. And so we count down the weeks to the final date and review our fate. In the meantime, and on a much brighter note, we met up with Antony Wolfson, a name well known on the Coast for his performances. He has been hailed as the true ghost of Elvis as he has more than a few connections with the icon himself. Antony is featured on our cover this month, see inside for more. We have some fantastic things happening with Yorkshire Linen and we wish the ladies there much success with the new store. You can still catch some very lastminute bargains of the old ranges, but you must hurry as all will be gone by midmonth! Can the truth behind Brexit get any worse? Operation Yellowhammer, a secret government document has been leaked. It is not ‘project fear’ it is a very-real study the UK government undertook in its attempt to mitigate the effects of a no deal Brexit and it concentrated on the contingency planning needed in the following areas - transport, border crossing of people and goods, healthcare, energy, food and water, UK nationals in the EU, law enforcement, banking and finance, the Irish border, Crown dependencies (Gibraltar) and national security. In it there are no positives just negatives and yet Boris et al are still pushing (his do or die motto) to leave on 31 October. Among those negative impacts are restricted financial transfers, clogged British ports because 85% of lorries using the crossing are not ready, petrol import tariffs leading to the closure of 2 oil refineries, price increases for utilities, public protests in the UK with inadequate police resources to control them, 4 hour delays at the Gibraltar border, increased fuel and food prices and other increased border checks for UK citizens travelling to the EU and, without the necessary infrastructure in place by then, they envisage insurmountable delays at the UK borders, lasting up to 6 months, resulting in shortages of fresh food, fuel and medicines. Brexit, the gift that keeps on giving! As if that wasn’t bad enough, Priti Patel, the new Home Secretary, despite warnings of people being left in limbo, has now proposed to end freedom of movement from 01 November. What does that mean? It means that EU nationals will not be able to work and live freely in the UK and, unlike Spain, the UK has never properly registered those EU citizens who live there so they have no way of proving their settled status. Again, the UK has no infrastructure in place for this so the potential chaos will be disastrous. Let’s just consider one example - a Spanish lady who lives and works in the UK as a nurse for the NHS has come home to Spain for a couple 2

of weeks around the time of Brexit and tries to re-enter the UK after 01 November. Already her and those UKbased EU citizens who work there have that proposed £36,000 pa minimum salary threshold to contend with so that NHS nurse who popped home to visit her parents, is very likely to be denied reentry into the UK after her holiday. In effect then they are going to be locked in the UK until the systems are in place to allow them to prove their right to be there. And then we have seen Stephen Barclay, the Brexit Secretary, signing to set in motion the UK’s repeal of the European Communities Act of 1972 meaning that the UK will directly control its own policies after 31 October. That old leave campaign mantra ‘take back control’ is being rolled out again so the UK can take back control of its future success or demise but without any other UK laws yet passed to replace those redundant EU laws. Will that imply a lawless state until they are passed and how soon can they get those 12,000 laws replaced? And without the EU to act as their scapegoat, who will the UK blame if it all goes horribly wrong? The mind truly boggles! All this prompted me to write the following letter to Stephen Barclay and copy Matt Hancock (Health Secretary) in on it and next month I might even be able to share the reply! I am writing to you as President of Brexpats in Spain in representation of our 8,000+ members. Brexpats in Spain is an association here in Spain that I established in July 2016 with the aim of garnering support from Spain to defend our rights here and I have not been disappointed by Spain’s support for us. I can’t claim to be psychic but I envisaged little support from the UK and sadly, I have proven to be correct in that assumption. On 01 March, Spain announced a Royal Decree which would come into effect in the event of a no deal, something that seems ever more likely with Mr Boris Johnson now at the helm. I quote - ‘With respect to access to healthcare, Article 13 of the Royal Decree-Law establishes that Spain will continue to provide healthcare in Spain to UK nationals under the same terms and conditions determined before the UK's withdrawal from the EU, provided that the UK: Guarantees the same conditions to people who have the right to receive medical care in the UK paid for by Spain. This reciprocity will be the object of a verification procedure 2 months after the entry into force of the Decree-Law; Guarantees the repayment of the costs for medical care provided in Spain by its health services under the same terms as at present.’ With just little over 2 months, we are yet to see the conditional reciprocal agreement from the UK. A no deal

presents us with many issues but we can no longer allay the fears of our old and vulnerable members, some of whom are becoming ill with stress and worry! My question is very simple and I should appreciate an equally straightforward answer, no convoluted excuses or niceties intended to placate us. In the event of leaving the EU on 31 October with no deal, what will happen to our pensioners here who access Spain’s state healthcare via the S1 scheme should the UK not reciprocate the agreement? In other words, where do they stand with regards to healthcare after 31 December? There are approximately 100,000 pensioners in Spain who are registered on the S1 and who are extremely worried. Some are in the throes of cancer treatment, have operations scheduled, are undergoing routine essential and often life-saving treatment, and medication for many serious complaints and the worry of this is taking its toll on their already failing health. I shall resist criticising although it would be very easy to do given the scant information we have been privy to in over 3 years but I should like to remind you that these are 100,000 British passport holders who are ultimately the UK’s responsibility. If they have to return I presume some thought has been given to the facilities being put in place for their care and housing. Has the UK set-up a repatriation fund and how does it propose to compensate these British pensioners? I urge you to find some compassion, to either reciprocate Spain’s Royal Decree or to inform us of the plans made for them should there be no reciprocation forthcoming from the UK and, should that be the case, then how are these 100,000 British citizens expected to continue after 31 December this year? I am copying Mr Matt Hancock in on this because in his role as Health Secretary, if these 100,000 pensioners are forced to return to the UK, he will need to put some sort of plan into action to deal with the onslaught. I note, Mr Barclay, that you have insisted that Mr Barnier must realise that the politicial realities have changed. They undoubtedly have and I urge you to please practise what you are preaching. Of course, many things have changed since that fateful day on 23 June 2016 and the UK needs to adapt accordingly to govern its country and to demonstrate proper care and diligence for its people, something, that sadly to date, it has failed to do. We British immigrants in the EU have been held out to ransom for too long, it is time to show the country genuinely cares for its people and not just for itself. BBC Breakfast TV Interviews Expats for Brexit

s Brexit is almost upon us, growing concern is now spiralling among the estimated 250,000 British residing in Spain. So much so that many expat communities are now appealing to the UK government to take into serious consideration the effect that Brexit will inflict on their lives. Anne Hernandez, the President of Brexpats Spain, who has been working closely with the Spanish authorities and local Ayuntimientos was interviewed by BBC Breakfast journalist Tim Muffett on 30th August at the Wigan Bar in Benalmadena. Anne has worked for decades helping the expat residents on the Costa del Sol to obtain residency, legal documents, and also to be registered on the Padron, which enables them to receive medical treatment just as the native Spanish do. Without being registered within the Spanish system, expats cannot be covered medically nor apply for documents such as a Spanish driving licence. BBC Breakfast TV also interviewed a cross section of expats in order to hear how Brexit would effect their business, health benefits, and pension funds. The Mayor of Benalmadena, Victor Navas, was also present to give his support for the expat community and stated how important business and tourism from the UK was a key factor. With only weeks to the Brexit deadline, it has now become apparent, that life on the Costa will be no ray of sunshine, but uncertain cloudy days ahead. Close your eyes and you could swear Elvis is in the room From the very young age of eleven, a boy named Antony Wolfson was already spellbound in the wonder of Elvis, hanging on every word sung and cherishing the level of perfection this icon possessed. This depth of knowledge and quality of vocals were to become an amazing asset during Antony Wolfson´s later professional career. Antony says it all began when he was discovered by Kath Westmoreland, a longstanding backing singer for Elvis in Vegas for 7 years. Kath heard Antony sing, and was instantly impressed, so much so that she gave him sparkling reviews and also contacted him personally. Kath Westmoreland was eager to compliment him on his style (that has been hailed as The Ghost of Elvis) and the unique performance he delivered. Antony is not a tribute act, nor does he mimic the Elvis attire while performing, he maintains his own take on his shows. Many have said that if you close your eyes, you could swear that Elvis is in the room. Being highly praised by Kath led to other introductions to Elvis´s inner circle and f a m i l y. O n e i n p a r t i c u l a r w a s a close friend of Elvis, Joe Esposito that Antony met while in Australia. Joe had spent 20 years assisting Elvis after serving in the military with him. Many more acquaintances of Elvis came to know Antony Wolfson as a seasoned performer in his own right. The most honoured of meetings with Antony was when he met Priscilla Presley in London at a show with the Philharmonic Orchestra in 2016. Ironically on the same night that Antony met Priscilla in London, Joe Esposito, passed away. It was a night to be remembered fondly by all in the showbiz sector.

This led to even more events that were to accelerate Antony´s career. Tim Knight, another big name in the music industry, a mutual friend of Antony, as was Mike Stoller who was half of the duo and famed songwriters Leiber and Stoller. They had written hits such as “Jailhouse Rock”, “Hound Dog”, “Loving You” and “Don’t”, along with songs for other artists such as “Stand by Me” by Ben E King. The songwriters, Leiber and Stoller, were in possession of 2 songs originally written for Elvis, but had never been recorded. After some collaboration between Stoller and Tim Knight, Mike Stoller offered Antony both songs - “A touch of Heaven” and “Stay a while” for recording. After recording “A touch of Heaven” in Marbella, Stoller endorsed the finished product and simply remarked “You’ve got it!” The song is now on worldwide release and has won an Academic Music Award 2017 for the best R&B/Soul song. The success story continues as Antony Wolfson had the opportunity to travel internationally, performing in Memphis on Elvis´s birthday on Jan 8th, and being interviewed on Mississippi radio, Miss 98 on prime time to over 200,000 listeners! While in Memphis, Antony was welcomed VIP style into SUN

Studios where he sat in icon of Sun R e c o r d s S a m P h i l l i p s ’ c h a i r. . Our very own BBC radio were also eager to speak to Antony in the same year 2017 and broadcast an interview. Antony´s work in the UK is also represented by the well known Lander PR Agency who also represented Janet and Michael Jackson, Annie Lennox and Andrea Bocelli. Now residing on the Costa del Sol, Antony is performing 6 shows per week at various venues including Marriott Hotels, Los Monteros 5 Star Hotel, H10 Hotel, Hotel Angela Fuengirola, The Ona Alanda, and many more. He has also graced the theatre, the Salon Varieties, which he recalls as being a wonderfully different experience. This was a huge success, and which only a true professional can perform under pressure of unfamiliar occurrences. When we asked what was Antony´s favourite Elvis song, he was quick to answer that it was “Are you lonesome tonight?”. his amazing lady has much to tell, whether it be true life stories, or fiction that has been inspired by an inquisitive and innovative mind. Julie Mc Sorely was born in Adelaid Australia which was the original setting for her first book, Öut of the Box¨. This was a true story which follows the highs and lows of a champion smuggler, Reg Spiers, who arrived in England in 1964 as a world class athlete. Garlicky roasted potatoes with a difference to jazz up simply cooked meats, creates a nice treat for any time. My family love this dish so much, that I find that I have to increase the proportions, so the amounts in the recipe serve as a simple guide for you, but if you need more potatoes, it doesn't spoil the dish if you don't increase the other ingredients. Serves 4 4 Large potatoes. 175 g Chorizo, diced. 4 Garlic cloves, finely chopped. 1 Medium white onion, sliced finely. 3 - 4 Tablespoons olive oil. Salt. Pepper.

Method 1. Preheat oven to 220C/gas 7 2. Cut the potatoes into 1 cm slices and tip into a roasting dish. 3. Scatter the chorizo, garlic and onion. 4. Drizzle with olive oil and toss to combine everything together. 5. Season with Salt and pepper. 6. Cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour. Turn potatoes during cooking to achieve crispiness all over the potatoes according to personal taste. Remove excess oil before end of cooking. Great with poultry or lamb. 10

f you have never visited the Balcon de Europa in Nerja, then your eyes are missing a rare treat of picturesque beauty and a chance to sample a little history. Nerja still sits in the province of Malaga, and is part of the comarca of La Axarquia. It is the most beautiful of coastlines, priding natural and tropical like beaches, and underwater caves. Nerja is famous for its caves, and many concerts have been held there in the past to show off their acoustic enhancement to music events. There is now concern from environmental sectors and so controls are being implemented. But the Balcon itself is a most breathtaking place to see, with its paramount views of the coastline which is also why it is referred to as the Mirador (viewpoint). This charming tourist attraction of today saw grim times back in the 19 century, as the Peninsular War was taking place against the Guerilla Spanish forces and Napoleon’s French troops. The watchtower on the Balcon was destroyed in 1812 after surviving since the 9th century. What followed in the decades after was the Spanish Revolution, as in 1868 the Spanish people succeeded in bringing down the monarchy resulting in the deposition of Queen Isabella II. So there was turbulence all around,

King Alfonso XII although it was referred to as the Glorious Revolution. The statue that is famous that stands at the edge of the Balcon, is that of King Alfonso XII, son of Isabella. As Isabella abdicated from the throne in 1868, Alfonso became King. His reign was comparatively short lived, as so his life, as he was only on the throne for 11 years and died at the young age of 27!

The name ´The Balcon de Europa¨was given to this mirador by King Alfonso XII and has become the most visited hotspots of Spain, boasting thousands of visitors per year. The local town which sits behind the Balcon has an abundance of quaint little walkways, cafes, shops, and many attractions for all the family. For those who love the sea, Nerja is also hailed as one of the best coastlines to snorkel or dive as the rocks attracts a very active sealife not seen further down the coast. Cannabidiol (CBD) has been recently covered extensively in the media, but what exactly is CBD ? Why is it suddenly so popular ? Cannabidiol is a phytocannabinoid discovered in 1940. It is one of some 113 identified cannabinoids in cannabis plants and accounts for up to 40 % of the plant's extract. It is derived directly from the hemp plant, which is a cousin of the marijuana or cannabis plant. By itself it does not cause a ‘high’. According to a report from the World Health Organization, “In humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential…. To date, there is no evidence of public health related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.” CBD interacts with the human endocannabinoid system (ECS) and has many health benefits, from proven anti-inflammatory properties to diabetes, epilepsy and potential cancer treatments. As mentioned, CBD oil will not get you high because it does not contain a significant amount of THC or any other psychoactive compounds although it may contain a negligible trace. Supplementing with CBD enriched oil improves homeostasis and can be accurately dosed with a couple of drops under the tongue. In 2018, clinical research on cannabidiol included preliminary studies of anxiety, cognition, movement disorders, and pain and it helps major organs to perform their functions at a higher level. Since it is a natural product, at present it is branded a ‘wellness’ or ‘food’ supplement and CBD is legal because it contains less than 0.2 % of the psychoactive ingredient THC. This strict rule is enforced in the UK by the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), responsible for ensuring that any similar products, medicines and medical devices work correctly and are acceptably safe. The European Industrial Hemp Association (EIHA) strictly adheres to these guidelines. The CBD industry is expected to be worth more than 3 billion euros globally by next year. In the UK, CBD products are sold in many stores including popular brands like Holland & Barrett. However, the biggest market, for the time being, is the US, where since the passing of 2014 Farm Bill - some US universities were legally permitted to cultivate hemp for research and development. As from 2018, the US has to import hemp seed oil and CBD oil to meet consumer demand! Meanwhile, in the EU, the industry has grown significantly since the 1970’s and EU farmers can even obtain a subsidy for hemp cultivation. It might surprise you, but France is hemp country and now the world’s number 1 producer. According to 2016 EIHA data, 17.000 ha of hemp is under cultivation in France which was more than half the total 33.000 ha for Europe. You can also find just hemp seed oils without added CBD, similar to any vegetable or olive oil but it’s the only edible oil that contains greater than 80% polyunsaturated essential fatty acids. Linoleic acid (LA) and linolenic acid (LNA) are found in a ratio of 3:1, which is widely believed by nutritionists to be the optimal ratio. And it also has high levels of vitamin E. This precious oil, rich in essential omega-6 and omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, is extracted by cold pressing. This method is not unique to hemp seed oil and similar to extracting black onion seed oil. Cold pressing requires the seeds to be de-shelled, the outer husk must be removed and then, after some scientific chilling and squeezing, hemp seed oil is extracted. Nowadays we can offer a “Super CBD oil” product because since 2016 you have these oils, are enriched with pure cannabidiol – CBD – which is extracted from the flowers. In order to achieve the highest yields and purity, most hemp CBD oil manufacturers utilize advanced supercritical CO2 extraction processes, the gentlest method of raw hemp extraction.

The amount of added CBD is measured in mg which will define the CBD % concentration for a 10 ml hemp oil bottle. The problem, as usual, is getting the right and true product, because when demand starts to exceed the offer, as unfortunately in all businesses, some will want to cut corners or essentially cheat upon customers. Internet selling doesn’t help because of real origin, quality and guarantees and, as the cost of making the real CBD product is quite high, the final product will also be costly. Many “jump on the bandwagon’ and want to have their cut, and you’ll find prices for only 10 % pure CBD concentration oils as high as 130€ and the very cheapest ones have no CBD in them at all. Some mention, for instance 20 % Hemp Seed oil, which just means hemp oil is added to another type of oil and the CBD is nowhere to be found! Windows 7 end of life! Microsoft recently announced that it will officially begin the Windows 7 end of life phase on 14 January 2020. On that day, the company will stop supporting Windows 7 on laptops and desktops and will no longer patch it with security updates. All good things must come to an end. And soon enough, Windows 7 will be put out to pasture, leaving those who stick with the operating system at potentially higher risk of being targeted by hackers. As of January, Microsoft will no longer patch security holes in the operating system. And if things go wrong and bugs develop, you won’t be able to call on Microsoft to fix the problem. Questions and Answers How many people are still using Windows 7? There are more than 1 billion Windows users around the world. So, hundreds of millions of people are going to be affected by this change. What does Windows 7 end of life mean for my security? 22

In the past, Microsoft offered patches in the run-up to the date, to secure the operating system as much as possible. Unfortunately, it also meant that hackers had free rein after the end-oflife period hit. Hackers will wait until after that date to find ways to exploit vulnerable systems and cause havoc. Using an operating system that’s not supported is like having a target on your back and they will attack! Does end of life apply to all Windows 7 versions? All Windows 7 Versions, such as windows Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise and Ultimate. If you’re using Windows 7 embedded systems in point-of-sale terminals and other devices, it’s best to check online. How will it affect Internet Explorer? Internet Explorer is considered a “component of the Windows operating system,” which makes it susceptible to the same end-of-life timeline. Unfortunately, like Windows 7, Internet Explorer could be hit hard by hackers trying to target the browser.

When should I upgrade to Windows 10? If you really like Windows 7, there is nothing stopping you from staying with it, but you’ll be using an operating system that is no longer supported, without security updates. Over time, you could start to see more security problems. We suggest the sooner people can get away from Windows 7 and switch to Windows 10, the better! And that is exactly what the Classic Car Club of Andalucia do so well, the passion and love for these oldies shines through the owners and into their cars. They have been gracing the roads of Spain now for 11 years, so chairman Ian Giles and the club will be celebrating the club’s birthday, now priding 600 members. On Saturday 10th August, club member Trevor Naylor organised a short but inventive route for members to enjoy commencing at Venta El Gloria at La Fresnada, Malaga. In total there were 21 cars and 39 guests for the afternoon lunch. The route was designed, as always, to take in some of the most picturesque sights and see some of the alternative roads in order to avoid summer traďŹƒc. Drivers enjoyed the morning by passing through Almogio, up towards La Joya, then down through Pizarra before stopping

for a cava or coee break at Venta las Caballos. This halfway stop was estimated to take around two and a half hours. The second leg of the journey headed down through Villafranco and on the scenic side of Coín to arrive at Palmanova El Golf Restaurant which sits at the side of Mijas Golf. Guests began to arrive for lunch from 2.30pm where members lined up the cars outside the restaurant and took a well earned cava. The CCA attracts such a turnout as this even in the soaring temperatures, as it is an ideal way to interact with fellow car fanatics. Modern Classic were also present. Many thanks to Trevor Naylor, Martin Hall, and Gweneth Howe for organising the day and Ian and Carol Giles for welcoming guests to join in the event. Also to Palmanova El Golf for hosting a superb lunch and afternoon spent looking over the picturesque Mijas Golf Course. 2019/2020 Season Kicking Off for the Costa Gaels GAA Team

fter a well-deserved summer break, the Costa Gaels GAA (Gaelic Football) team is now returning to training for the 2019 / 2020 Andalucian Championships and are excited to confirm an historic homecoming to their traditional home base of Marbella Rugby Club. After a short period on the road while the Rugby Club was being restructured, they have now returned to home base and are back at training and chomping at the bit to face their opponents in the Andalucia and Iberian Championships in the upcoming season. Of course it is not just the usual Men’s Senior Team who are ready to go again, there is also the Ladies Seniors, the Kids Club and now also a proud new Toddlers Club, so there really is something for all the family. Add to this the fact that the Rugby Club has a café/bar on premises, then training really is an event for all the family (more details below). Despite a good showing last year, including a final against Gibraltar who ran out deserved winners, the trophy cabinet still has a space in it, which they fully intend to fill this year. With a team ranging in age from 18 all the way up to 48 (sorry Aidan), and from Ireland, England, Spain, Iraq (yes), South Africa, Argentina, Italy and just about everywhere else in the world. There is a place for everyone in the Costa Gaels, so they would like to invite anyone and everyone to join them for some fun (even if you have never played before, just join in the craic). Team Captain Justin Parks comments “last year was tough but very fun, these are a great bunch of lads and we love getting together and welcoming new lads in. But this year we are hungry to win, so we will be training hard, and having the craic while we do. He also commented “it is good to be back here in the Marbella Rugby Club here we belong, we can feel the team getting better and better each year so hopefully this is our year and we can fill that trophy space”. hen Jack McDonnell had put together a football event, to raise money for Charity, he approached the Lions Club of La Cala de Mijas to help him achieve his dream. He had chosen them because of all the wonderful work they do for the local Community and he knew the money would go to a good cause. With the help of the Club and the Town Hall the event raised over 1000 euros and the Lions recently presented Jack with a certificate of appreciation for all his hard work and as proof of what he had done for his university degree. What an inspiring young man he is. Jack and the Lions symbolise what working for our local community can achieve. Helping others to help themselves and looking out for each other is something that we all can do. We are all amazed at how much suffering is on our own doorstep. Jack is a beacon of hope that there are still young people out there who do care about their local community and want to give something back. What a wonderful community we have here. nne Bowles, a well-known and respected lady, member of the La Cala Lions, and founder of the Diabetic Support Group celebrated her special birthday in August. This was an ideal gathering for fellow Lions and friends, old and new, to raise a glass to this amazing lady. Anne has helped raise money for charity, organised events, and been a godsend to those who live with diabetes, so it was no doubt that over 50 guests were eager to join her party. The theme was to come as you were ¨When the boat went down¨ which attracted innovative party-goers wearing over the top costumes. Some were dressed as nuns, bathing beauties, nighties and pyjamas, and one guest had been caught in the WC! All went well on the crest of the waves, such a colourful sight. Well done! You really know how to push the boat out Anne! 32

The Safety of CBD Products

A

fter 80 years of CANNABIS prohibition, most of the modern population suffers from what is called, Cannabinoid Deficiency Syndrome. This is based on the idea that there are many diseases which are caused by a deficiency of cannabinoids in you body, and that affects the endocannabinoid system (ESC). This is the largest selfregulating system within our bodies, with receptors in our brain and central nervous system, and also in our other organs. The ESC needs the CBD to function optimally. Before the prohibition of Cannabis, the CBD would be provided in our food. It would be present in the meat, in the dairy and in the eggs, as the livestock was fed largely with hemp plants. Now as more and more people become increasingly aware of the powerful therapeutic benefits of the CBD, some products have become legal, hemp oil products have become highly sought after, and more CBD products than ever have become available on the market. But as you set out to find the right CBD product for you, it is important to remember that not all products are the same. What do we have to be aware of when buying CBD products? Not all cannabinoid products are created equal, and it is very important that you ask these very important questions: Where are the plants grown? All Cannabis plants can be used to clean up the soil from heavy pollution. Hemp has been used to clean up after Chernobyl, and several other sites that have been declared unfit for use because of heavy metals from intense industry. The plants easily absorb the contaminants in the soil, but this kind of use renders the plants useless for consumption, as they will be full of heavy metals or whatever the were supposed to clean. These plants will be used for biofuel though, so they are not wasted. Not only do we have to worry about heavy metals, the plants also absorb chemical fertilizers, herbicides and pesticides. What type and potency of cannabinoids does the product contain? Make sure your product is full spectrum. There are now 146 different canabidols that we know of, and they all play a role within our bodies. The only one that is not present in hemp is the THC. This means that consuming CBD derived from hemp, will never cause a high, or temporarily inhibit cognitive functions. Hence the nickname “ The Hippies disappointment”. The lack of THC is a requisite for the product to be legal, as by law in Europe, no CBD product may contain more than 0,2% THC. To understand why it is so important that the product must be full spectrum, you can compare it to a multivitamin tablet. Why would you ever buy a multivitamin containing only 1 or 2 vitamins, if you know you need them all? The different cannabidols work like gears. If some of them are missing, nothing really works. Another important thing to take into account is that in the pharma version of CBD [Epidolex], the information shows liver toxicity starting at 1mg per kilogram of bodyweight, or

about 70mg per average adult. The information mentions elevated levels of toxic liver enzymes, and therefore it is recommended to use 50mg of CBD per day. Hence it is very important that you know the content of milligrams of CBD in the product you are going to use. When you get the answer of, “it contains x %” then ask for an analysis, and find out this question: % of what exactly? Which brings us to another question: Does the cannabinoid product undergo strict testing? As mentioned before it’s extremely important that cannabinoid products are tested for any outside contamination. Because of the plant’s identity as a bioaccumulator, toxins like microbes, mold, heavy metals, and other possible contaminants can make their way into cannabinoid products, and a it is a concentrate from the plant that is used to make CBD oil, means that if they are present, it might be in high amounts. Always ask whether an independent accredited lab has tested the cannabinoid product for safety and quality before you buy or consume it. And lastly, while most people prefer to consume pure Cannabinoid products, some products such as edibles and tinctures, include other ingredients apart from the CBD and other natural constituents. Make sure that the added ingredients don't contain any artificial ingredients that can tamper with the balance that is designed to encourage homeostasis. So find yourself a product that is tried and tested, one that is full spectrum, and where you know the exact dose you need to take without putting a strain on your liver. If you need a higher dosage that the 50 mg of CDB, then find a reputable provider than can supply a CBD product that can bypass the liver, such as for example a VAPE or even chewing gum. 33

(pictured) Is at the Academy most days. He is the father of two sons Tomas Jnr and Ricardo both Professionals. There are a total of 5 Pro´s In the family – his is a remarkable story. Tomas Bellido Snr. At the age of 9 he became a caddy, and caddied for General Franco – who ruled Spain as a Military Dictator from 1939 until his death in 1975. When he returned home that evening he was soundly beaten by his Grandfather. The reason he had earned more money on that day than his grandfather had earned in the week! Tomas, now 85, and still with a superb swing hails from Toledo and is also fluent in French, and gives lessons to regular clients that have worked with him for years – and new ones. Recently at a technology presentation to our Professionals at the range, they were all hitting balls on a tracking machine. A notable twinkle appeared in his eye Tomas turned around and started hitting the balls left handed. Totally blocking the tracker. He can play either handed. He insisted that when his sons were younger that at least once a year they played a family game left handed. The Academy also offers Group Lessons, on-course lessons and a three hole challenge on Monday afternoons that includes a complimentary G&T on the first hole, beer and chicken wings on your return and all for only €15. Torreblanca Golf Society The Friendliest Golf Society On The Coast By Robyn Wheeler It was another super August’s golf for our society here on the Costa del Sol as usual playing golf on some great courses with good friends. The only drawback this year being that not only were the temperatures very high but the humidity was also breaking records. This did not, however, deter many of our members and guests who, despite the bright sun and the temperatures in the 40’s, went out to play golf when they could have been having a cool beer or a gin and tonic in the shade around the swimming pool or on the beach. You know what they say, Mad dogs and Englishmen……………… Once again, I would like to thank all of our sponsors for their support plus Trish and team at the Red Dragon keeping us fed and watered after each game. As I said, we played some great games, but unfortunately there is not enough space to cover all of them so here is a small sample. Valle Romano 1st August 2019 This game was played at Valle Romano, a course we had only played once before. It was for individual stableford and was kindly sponsored by Der Carolan and it was another very hot day with the course in good condition. The course had recently changed around so I’m reliably informed by those members with good memories. Despite the heat, those of us who travelled to Estepona had a great day. (That is except Paul Winter who had his car towed away.) Our winner today scoring 35 points playing off a handicap of 20.3 cut to 19 was Peter Mc Donald. Second with a score of 33 points playing off 11.7 cut to 11.2 was Tony White. Third, also with 33 points but with a worse back nine playing off 17.1 cut to 16.8 was Don Crowley. Our guest prize was won by Mark Durham. Nearest the pin in one on hole 4 was Tony White with Bob Sawyer nearest the pin in two on hole 13. Santana 8th August 2019 This game we played at Santana. It was for individual stableford and was kindly sponsored by Gary Sparrow. It was also his birthday, although he was reluctant to tell us how old he was today. It was another extremely hot day with the course in its usual perfect condition. Although it was playing long with the tees moved quite away back. Our winner today with a score of 38 points playing off 6.1 cut to 4.7 was young Lewis Harrison. Second, with 36 points playing off 9.9 cut to 9.2, was our cheerful landlord of the Red Dragon Andy "Marigold" Hassall. Third, with 35 points, on count back, playing off 25.7 cut to 25.1. despite having just come out of hospital was John Yuill. Our guest prize was won by Joyce Toms. Nearest the pin in one for men on hole 7 was not won as nobody managed to hit the green. Nearest the pin in one on hole 16 for Ladies was won by Joyce Toms. That is despite Tony White getting all excited thinking he had won until he realized he was the wrong gender. Nearest the pin in two on hole 14 was won by Adrian Martin. Nearest the pin in three on hole 10 was won by Paul Cunningham. It was then time to celebrate Gary's birthday - including a very large cake supplied by the Red Dragon. The Parador 22nd August 2019 This game we played at The Parador. It was for individual stableford and was kindly sponsored by Torreblanca Golf Society. The course was in its usual good condition with greens being superb. One disadvantage for us all were the tee positions. They were a long way back. Another disadvantage was the weather as it was very, very humid. However, this did not stop us from enjoying the day. First today, with a score 34 points playing off 16.8 cut to 15.8, was Adrian Martin. Second, with 30 points playing off 26.3 cut to 25.7, was Bill "The Weatherman" Giles. Third, with 26 points playing off 25.1 cut to 24.8, was John Yuill. Our guest prize was won by Ewen McLeod. A special mention must go to our guest Lucy Kotawaski who is only eleven years old and this was her first time playing an 18 hole course. Playing off 36 she came in with 26 points. This is a young girl to watch. Well done Lucy. Atalaya 29th August 2019 This game at Atalaya we played the New Course. It was for individual stableford and was kindly sponsored by Mark Mathews. It was also our end of month competition with the winner going forward to the "Champion of Champions final in June. This is only the 2nd time we have played this course but it definitely won’t be the last. It was once again a very hot and humid day, however, the course was in superb condition. This was reflected in the scores. Our winner today, scoring 38 points playing off 14.8 now cut to 13.6, was that man again Adrian Martin. Second, with 36 points playing off 14.9 cut to 14.2, was our Captain of the northern Ryder Cup Team Catherine Shiels. Third, with 35 points playing off 27.7 cut to 27. 4, was Finbar Carroll. Our guest prize was won by John Gardner plying off 18.2 he came in with a magnificent score of 40 points. If you notice your dog foaming at the mouth after playing with a toad, immediately rinse it out with water. If the dog eats the toad, you should probably get it to a vet or animal hospital right away. The giant toad can grow up to eight inches long and is very heavy. This toad is greenishbrown and covered with bumps. It has glands that can secrete a very toxic poison. The Giant toad is responsible for the death of many dogs. This toad will come into gardens and eat the dogs’ food. If the dog would grab the toad it would be immediately poisoned. Pet owners might notice these signs: Frothy salivation with vigorous head shaking. Pawing at the mouth and continuous efforts to vomit. In coordination and staggering. If you know of or strongly suspect toad poisoning, immediately rinse out your pet's mouth with water before going to your veterinarian or an emergency clinic for treatment. Most toad poisonings occur in the evening or the night. Unfortunately, there are no antidotes for toad venom intoxication, but many of these victims may be saved with symptomatic treatment, which reduces the absorption of toxin and controls the clinical signs of illness. Depending upon circumstances, your veterinarian may use a variety of drugs to control heart abnormalities, breathing problems and excitation of the central nervous system. The key to survival is rapid recognition of signs and prompt veterinary medical care

The Processionary Caterpillar

Urticating hairs of the caterpillar larvae cause harmful reactions in humans and other mammals. Now the weather is beginning to warm up to its time again to warn pet owners of the dangers of the “candy floss” white nests that have appeared rapidly in the fir trees above our heads! This is the nest of the PROCESSIONARY CATERPILLAR and they arrive in their thousands!! – They are dangerous to humans too but because dogs & cats are inquisitive & like to nosey about on the ground sniffing out what’s new – that is when pets get themselves into trouble.. The caterpillars get their name because they follow each other in a “procession” actually looking quite sweet, innocent and cute; they are dark brown in colour. The caterpillars hatch from their nests and follow each other across a pathway or road making a definite line to their onward destination. It is at this point that canines and felines wander up to the “little monsters” & have a good sniff to investigate the findings – & get into trouble. If your pet comes into contact with the caterpillars it is imperative that you wash well the area & get your pet to a veterinarian as soon as possible. The caterpillars are covered in thousands of tiny hairs which get hooked on the skin, mouth or nose, they imbed into pets and then literally “eat away on flesh”. Avoid exercising pets in the pine forests until the end of April. 39

This sounds quite impressive but if we use the dried leaves, (raw in salads, in boiling water as infusions, added to soups and stews etc.) these benefits are multiplied and we find that they have 10 times more vitamin A than carrots, 17 times more calcium than milk, 15 times more potassium than bananas, 25 times more iron than spinach and 9 times more protein than yoghurt. Used properly, the Moringa supplies the body with antioxidants which contribute to delay the ageing process and help to regenerate the skin, it also helps to stabilize blood-sugar levels and keep cholesterol at bay. At the same time, it has anti-depressant qualities, antiinflammatory and analgesic effects, helps to strengthen our immune system and increases our energy levels. Expert nutritional scientists also believe that it can help to prevent hair loss! Wow! It’s got to be worth a try. So far, we have only talked about the leaves but the flowers, the fruit which

Definitely out of the question for Galway! In Andalucía there are already several plantations in the interior of Málaga province, (Cártama, Antequera) and wherever olive trees and almond trees grow the Moringa would flourish with ease. The tree will grow up to five metres in height in its first year and can reach a maximum height of twelve metres. The tree’s roots are non-invasive – they don’t hunt for water pipes and lift up pavements and roads so because of this and their rapid growth they make good boundary trees between properties. A visit to Wikipedia will expand this information, enlighten you with its proportions of carbohydrates, vitamins and whatnot and you will even find recipes to try it out. Meantime, I’m looking for the beer! .

Streptopelia

T

he Eurasian collared dove found all over Spain is native to Europe and Asia and now introduced into North America. Because it is so widely spread throughout the world and still increasing in numbers the International Union for Conservation of Nature has classed it as “least concern”. The name Streptopelia comes from ancient Greek, streptos meaning “collar” and peleia meaning “dove” The size of the collared dove is smaller than a wood pigeon but larger than the turtle dove but still has a wingspan of over half a metre. The collar for which it is famous only runs round the back of its neck and is black, which makes it easy to identify. Its population in the last 100 years has to a degree exploded. Some 50 years ago here on the Costa del Sol you would have had trouble finding one, now they are in the towns and countryside. They are not migratory so in more than one way they are here to stay. In Europe it was first reported 1838 in Bulgaria and spread rapidly across Europe turning up in Germany in 1945 at the end of the war. It can be found now from China up and across Europe including Norway to the Arctic Circle and across North Africa and the Canary Islands. It was in 1974 that less than 50 collared doves escaped in the Bahamas the doves then spread to Florida and are now found in every state of the USA and Mexico.
