Mass vaccination plan underway Valencian Government seeking large spaces to facilitate vaccination The Generalitat Valenciana has created a working group to identify large spaces suitable for health workers to begin a mass vaccination programme in April, in the style of the United States. President of the Generalitat, Ximo Puig, revealed that the objective is that "the vast

majority" of Valencian citizens are immunized by summer.

Puig announced that the Valencian Community is guaranteed to receive a minimum of 559,020 covid-19 vaccines before March 31 and that from April ("if the pharmaceutical companies comply")

Charity President Maria Wilson said: “Unfortunately, for the first time in 11 years, due to the current restrictions the Pink Ladies/Panthers couldn't even get

together to mark the day.

Normally we would hold an annual event at Zenia Boulevard with the support of its management team and supported by the local community who come together to remember lost loved ones and those battling against this evil disease.

Hopefully we can get back to some sort of normality very soon and continue to raise funds for the AACC´s early detection program and all the research so that one day we will beat cancer.”

As such Spain is set to follow the example of the UK, which last week enabled Villa Park (Aston Villa's home ground) to streamline the vaccination process. In the US, California is using the Disneyland car park in Anaheim to vaccinate thousands of people a day.

That morning he took her, against her will to the Gender Violence Court to withdraw the complaint she had made against him. The man, who has a previous complaint for similar acts on a former partner, was placed at the disposal of the Judicial Authority and sent immediately to prison.

Restrictions may continue beyond February 15th Ximo Puig is committed to maintaining the current restrictions beyond February 15th, it was revealed on Sunday.

The president of the Generalitat remarked that "we are not yet in a position to make the measures more flexible" despite the improvement in data.

Asked on Sunday if the measures would be eased after the 15th, Puig said that he doesn’t consider that the Valencian Community is in a position to ease the restrictions, remarking that despite a promising decline in positive cases in recent days, the overall number of infections and the accumulated incidence rate continue to be very high.

Puig was asked about ending current measures as he was on his way into a meeting with the National Executive Committee of the PSPV in Valencia on Sunday. He indicated that he would be in favour of extending current restrictions beyond the 15th as “there

continues to be great hospital pressure and thousands of infections continue to occur.”

He continued, “we are not in a good moment” despite being “better than we were” before saying “We will analyze it well, but what is relevant is to consolidate the position, and in a few weeks we will probably be in a position to look to the future with greater hope.”

“Now more than ever is not the time to lower our guard,” warned Puig, saying we must continue with the “great effort” that the people of the Valencian Community as a whole are making. In his opinion, to overcome this situation “we need to persist, and not relax, not loosen at all.”

Father jailed for abuse after impregnating underage daughter The Provincial Court of Murcia has sentenced a man to fifteen years in prison after he was found guilty of "persistently and repeatedly" sexually assaulting his daughter, a minor, whom he made pregnant.

The sentence also includes a restraining order which means the man will not be allowed to come within 100

metres of the victim for a period of fifteen years. He has also been ordered to pay compensation of €60,000.

The court heard that the girl was repeatedly raped between August 2016 and January 2018, the man taking advantage of times when his wife was out at work. One of the rapes even occurred on the day the girl informed

Ten new covid outbreaks in the Vega Baja Public Health revealed news on Sunday of five more outbreaks of covid-19 in the Vega Baja area, bringing the number of new outbreaks detected in the region over the weekend to ten.

The Ministry of Health updated its data regarding the pandemic in the Valencian Community on Sunday and gave notice of five more outbreaks of coronavirus in the Vega Baja, bringing the total of new outbreaks over the weekend to ten, with

five outbreaks revealed on Saturday.

Three of Sunday’s outbreaks were detected in Almoradí, two in schools with three and seven positive cases in each outbreak, and another in the workplace with three positive cases. Scandal over Orihuela Costa road works contract A scandal has been brought to light concerning the contract for vitally-needed road repair and maintenance works in Orihuela Costa. The company responsible for the execution of the contract for this work has publically alleged that it is being sabotaged by the Councillor in charge of Infrastructures. It is claimed that the Councillor has withheld payment for works under the contract for the past 4 months, equivalent to over a quarter of a million of euros and consequently much needed repair and maintenance is now under threat.

The contract has been controversial from the start, as in a bizarre turn of events the contract was awarded to a company that was not the original winner of the tender bid. Unsurprisingly, this decision was challenged legally and a court reassigned the contract to the correct company.

It is this company which now finds its work being sabotaged, which it believes is due the Ciudadanos Councillor for Infrastructure.

Although the lamentable state of the roads and pavements in Orihuela Costa would require much greater expenditure, the contract is for the significant amount of €825,000 annually for an initial period of 4 years. The company has complained publicly

and directly to local political party C.L.A.R.O. that the Councillor for Infrastructure has been blocking payment for the last 4 months of work, despite the fact that the work has been inspected and approved by Town Hall technicians.

Furthermore, among other complaints, the company claims that the Town Hall is not supplying material for the works, for which it is responsible, in the quantity or quality necessary to complete the required maintenance.

A C.L.A.R.O spokesperson said: “It is speculated that the motive behind these efforts to frustrate the execution of the contract is to force its renunciation by breaking the company financially. Either through denying payment for work carried out or to provide grounds for declaring breach of contract and consequently, by

whichever means, enabling it to be reassigned again once again!

Legally, this would probably be to the company originally proposed by the Infrastructure department.

“However, whatever the reason, Cambiemos and C.L.A.R.O. will denounce this situation at the next full council meeting and seek to ensure that the residents of Orihuela Costa are not being deprived of the maintenance and repair of their streets and pavements which are in such a deplorable condition.”

Orihuela Health Councillor steps back following vaccination backlash

Can you help local food bank A food bank set up by local people to help local people has been inundated with requests following the recent closure of cafes, bars restaurants and gyms.

First established by Fred and Mick Brome after the initial 13th March lockdown, the La Florida Friends Food Bank has supported more than 300 families and fed over 900 individuals of all nationalities and across numerous local communities.

Following the first lockdown demands eased as businesses opened and people found or returned to work. The food bank wound down and any remaining items were passed on to other food banks and charities.

However, unfortunately the Food Bank is now needed once again and Fred and Mick, helped by two volunteers are working tirelessly to help those in need.

Fred said: “Once again many local people who work in bars, restaurants, entertainment or tourist-reliant businesses are finding they have no work and therefore no pay. We are now, once again, supporting many families in the area. The support we have from people and businesses in the community has been overwhelming, but the demand is high and stock is running low and we desperately need food donations.”

Councillor José Galiano has presented the Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, his resignation from his delegated responsibilities for Health, Statistics, Mobile Fleet and Urban Transport ‘until the question over his vaccination is resolved’.

Despite the lack of responsibilities, he will however, remain an official Councillor.

The Councillor said: “I have offered the Mayor to temporarily leave my duties on multiple occasions since this ‘lynching’ for my vaccination in the media, and I thank him, as well as my colleagues from the Municipal Group of the Popular Party, for the trust they have had in me throughout. Finally, I have presented to the mayor my

resignation of the delegated powers, temporarily until this situation is clarified, and it is known who is really responsible for the failures in the vaccination process. I have a very clear conscience and I am sure that if there is justice and decency in the institutions, this will soon be clarified in a satisfactory way.

“I never asked to be vaccinated and I have not taken the vaccine away from anyone. I was vaccinated by the staff of the Department who knew the vaccination protocol at that time and did not have information on how to proceed with surplus doses of vaccines. Subsequently, the Autonomous Secretary of Public Health was forced to expressly define the procedure

and did so on 20th January, 14 days after the vaccine was administered. In addition, the Regional Minister for Health Ana Barceló, dismissed the Director of Public Health of Valencia, Elvira Mensat, recently for acknowledging that there were no clear instructions on how to proceed with surplus vaccinations.

“In addition, I am a health worker, I am a nurse now and at all times. Therefore, they cannot claim that I am not included in the groups listed as priority. After the resignation of my powers, I will now return to my job as a nurse at the Orihuela Costa Health Centre, which I will combine with my role as a councillor of the Orihuela City Council.

Spain’s tourism industry Virtual Orihuela feels loss of British visitors The Spanish tourism industry is feeling the loss of British visitors, whose numbers plummeted 82 percent in 2020 from the previous year, according to figures released Wednesday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). The drop is blamed on the coronavirus pandemic, which led to strict restrictions on travel, quarantine rules and the closure of bars and restaurants. Most of Spain is used to receiving tourists from the United Kingdom, be it over summer or in the low season. The drop has hit the Canary and Balearic islands especially hard, as both archipelagos are highly dependent on international tourism and air connectivity.

But it is not just visitors from the UK that are being missed. Spain’s tourism industry is also feeling the loss of tourists from Germany, France, Scandinavian countries, the Netherlands and Italy. The drop in British tourists, however, has been the greatest, both in terms of the number of arrivals and in expenditure. This fall – together with the decline in German tourists – is having a big impact on Spain’s islands.

The numbers of tourists began to nosedive from mid-July, when the British government of Boris Johnson recommended against travel to Spain and imposed a 14-day quarantine on visitors returning from the country in a bid to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

The fall in German visitors compounded the loss. Last year, only 720,459 tourists from Germany visited the Balearic Islands, a drop of 84 percent on 2019 figures. In

total, spending by all international tourists in the region plummeted from €14.8 billion in 2019 to just €1.8 billion, a fall of 87 percent. Indeed, the Balearic Islands is the Spanish region that has seen the biggest drop in all international visitors, with the numbers of foreign tourists from 13.6 million in 2019 to just 1.7 million last year, a drop of 87 percent.

The outlook for 2021 is just as uncertain as everything depends on how the pandemic evolves over the next few months, whether there are new travel rules, and if a safe travel corridor can be opened between the UK and Spain. Vaccination will be another factor. The British are going at a strong rate and we will have to see what level of immunisation there is in Spain. The recovery will begin in summer, not before. Adding to the uncertainty is the impact of Brexit and fear of contagion from the new strains of the coronavirus.

The coronavirus pandemic has taken

a toll on all of Spain’s tourism industry.

According to the INE, Spain received a historic low of just 18.96 million foreign visitors in 2020. This represents a fall of 77 percent on figures from 2019, when the country welcomed 83.5 million international tourists, setting a new record high for the seventh year in a row.

Tourist expenditure also fell dramatically last year. Visitors spent €19.7 billion in 2020, down from €91.9 billion in 2019, a drop of 78.5 percent.

This has had a significant effect on the Spanish economy. In 2019, the tourism industry accounted for 12.4% of Spain’s gross domestic product (GDP). Last year, it accounted for just 4 percent.

Following the Balearic Islands, the regions hardest hit by the fall in international visitors were Catalonia (a drop of 80 percent), Madrid (77.7 percent), Andalusia (77.5 percent) and the Valencia region (73.2 percent).

The Councillor for Tourism and Festivities for Orihuela, Mariola Rocamora, has released a new mobile app to showcase the municipality. This technology allows tourists a better experience by being able to view all the sights in 360º and therefore organise trips in a much more realistic and planned way, hopefully encouraging them to visit Orihuela when they are able to do so.

This is a new way of making the municipality known both in Spain and the rest of the world. The Councillor said that “the commitment to digitisation and the advances that technology offers us is vital, and we have to adapt to the new reality.

With this tourist application, many more people will be able to ‘see’ the places of special interest in Orihuela. We are sure that we will awaken the interest of many people who will become tourists in our city in the future when the situation improves”.

The Department of Tourism, with a subsidy of 50 percent of the cost being covered by the Turisme Comunitat Valenciana project, has opted to introduce Orihuela in the ‘Lookish Travel Guide’ app. This platform, which features numerous municipalities from the Valencian Community, allows people to discover Orihuela from anywhere in the world, with several language options in addition to

Sick loggerhead turtle rescued A loggerhead turtle that was spotted having difficulty swimming in the waters off Pilar de la Horadada was rescued this week. Guardia Civil maritime units spotted the animal, 30 nautical miles off the coast. Identifying it as a loggerhead turtle (Caretta carreta, a protected species in danger of extinction) the officers realised the animal was having difficulty swimming and did not dive as other loggerheads would when they approached.

Officers, with the help of a support vessel, managed to rescue the turtle and later, it was transferred to Santa Faz Species Recovery Center, where after an initial examination the veterinary team speculated that she may be suffering from an eye disease. She also had numerous parasites.

Once the specialists at Santa Faz carry out a full examination of the turtle’s state of health, she will then be transferred to the

Oceanographic in Valencia, a centre specialising in the conservation of this type of marine animal.

The Loggerhead Turtle is a protected species and is in great danger of extinction according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).

Loggerheads face numerous threats causing the death of a large number of their species, many becoming trapped in fishing gear, such as longlines, ghost nets, etc. Due to the pollution of the sea, they often mistake plastic for food which, once ingested, causes them great harm.

Alicante police use drones and thermal cameras to locate illegal party Police in Alicante employed the use of thermal cameras and drones to find an illegal party taking place in the Serra Grossa forest park.

National Police had got wind of the gathering in advance and launched a surveillance operation to locate and break up the party.

Almost a hundred youngsters were found gathered in the mountains, listening to music and drinking.

Once located, officers on the ground escorted the minors to the lower areas of the mountain to avoid injury, given the complexity of the terrain. Various fines were issued to the partygoers for failing to comply with health measures before officers sealed off the area in order that it would not be used for future gatherings.

The Police were aware that the

young people had planned a meeting in that area, where last Saturday there was a smaller gathering, so the officers first used drones and thermal cameras to locate them.

National Police imposed 365 fines in one night - from Friday at 8:00 pm until early Saturday morning - 163 of these were issued for trying to bypass the border closures.

La Glea micro­reserve protection Several departments from the Orihuela Council have joined forces with the Natura 2000 Network to carry out a joint action in the Aguamarina area to protect the floral Microrreserve of Punta La Glea.

The Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, explained that the works have focussed on "the fence at the end of Calle Agua to prevent the transit of people inside the Microreserve and preserve the botanical species threatened or vulnerable that this area contains”.

In addition, the work also included the placement of information posts, "through which the risk of falling and the prohibition of walking clearly signed. The measure are key to the protection

and growth of the Helianthemum Caput-Felis Boiss species. The perimeter wall has been repaired so that the location cannot be accessed by people in error.

Where people had been walking on the headland, the strips of the micro-reserve have been restored with the plantation of Rhamnus lyciodes, Salsola oppositifolia, Launaea

arborescens and Launaea lanífera – all species in danger of extinction.

Councillor Aparicio has asked the local community to respect the area and not to walk through the micro-reserve. The Councillor said that, soon, they will begin the work to remove invasive (nonnative) species in this important area of the Oriolano coast.

But, there are a lot of new builds, the mess they leave on roads along with rubbish. Should they not be cleaning behind themselves.

Also on unused land, locals for some reason throw bottles empty cans, household rubbish. The worst is down a road near the bakery.

Also, the same road you have to

walk in the road as the pavements are covered in dog faeces which is left and not picked up. That road needs dog bins/rubbish bins and dog fine signs. Lots of other pavements are strewn in dogs’ faeces, this is so dangerous to children. Why are people so lazy?

There is a road sweeper, they park there sweeper carrier down there every day – I don’t know

where they go, but they do not clean the roads of Benijófar .

People of Benijófar , be proud of your town please help keep Benijófar pretty.

Construction of 11 dams Local Police fight truancy for Sierra San Miguel A meeting for the sharing of good practices in the fight against truancy was held online, organised by the School Council of the Valencian Community with the participation of truancy units from Orihuela, Alicante, Elche, Torrevieja, Valencia, among other cities in the Valencian Community.

Each of the units shared actions and work methods in the fight against school absenteeism. This is aimed at improving the educational system and promoting educational success in order to develop a work manual to eradicate school absenteeism at the municipal and community level.

The Department of Infrastructures for Orihuela City Council, led by the mayor Ángel Noguera, has requested of two subsidies to the Alicante Provincial Council for an amount of € 500,000, for the construction of 11 dams. These structures will solve the issues with the evacuation of rainwater and dragging of land from Mount San Miguel causing blockages and land slides.

One of the grants has been requested through the damages fund of the DANA storm and entails the construction of 7 dams in Monte de San Miguel. The other grant, the result of the various meetings held with the Deputy of the Water Cycle Ana Serna, involves the construction of 2 gabion dams in the Sierra San

Miguel and 2 gabion dams in the Sierra de la Muela de Orihuela .

The work consists of the construction of small hydraulic masonry and gabion dikes that will allow the retention of sediments which will reduce or cancel the processes of erosion in the ravines and limit the amount of debris carried by heavy water.The main objective is to adopt measures that prevent the phenomenon of a solid flow from forming and, if it has already occurred, to minimise it by sedimentation and the deposit of materials.

In addition, due to the fact that lately the meteorological phenomena tend to be less frequent but of greater intensity, all the water that runs through the

mountains gathers speed down the steep slopes and ends up in the town. This causes devastating floods before the river and channels can be blocked or drained. There will also be work carried out to improve the water catchment networks in the areas of Espeñetas, Plaza de Monserrate and adjacent streets.

Councillor José Aix, thanked the Alicante Provincial Council for its collaboration, and stressed the importance of valuing the work of the Department of Infrastructure, “especially now that, although a year and a half has passed since DANA, we continue to respond to many of the problems that arose at that time and it is essential to solve them to avoid damage from possible rains in the near future”.

On behalf of Orihuela, the three agents who make up the school truancy unit of the Orihuela Local Police participated. They shared a fundamental and different set of experiences compared to the rest of the participating truancy units.

These officers have been focussed on street work around the environments of schools, parks and recreational facilities, etc and linking to social work around minors and their families with the aim of redirecting young people.

Orihuela Council contributes to plan to support local business Orihuela City Council has shown support for the 'Resist' Plan with a contribution of 455,980.50 euros which represents 15 percent of the total and is complemented by the 62.5 percent provided by the Generalitat and 22.5 percent from the Provincial Council of Alicante.

The amount allocated to the municipality of Orihuela totals 3,039,870 euros destined for selfemployed and small businesses that carry out activities included in the decree, such as restaurants, bars, food stalls, hotels and tourist

accommodation, campsites and caravan parks etc.

The Plan also includes other activities, not directly related to catering and hospitality, such as film exhibitions, travel agencies, tour operators, other reservation services, event organises, performing arts and auxiliary activities, managers of movie theatres, sports facilities, sports clubs, gyms, amusement parks, among other recreational and entertainment activities.

The 'Resist' Plan, intended to

alleviate the negative impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, will grant a direct aid of 2,000 euros to each self-employed person or smallbusiness, which will be increased by an additional 200 euros for each worker in their charge affiliated with Security Social as of 3st December. Receiving this grant is not incompatible with others from other administrations or national public or private entities, the European Union or international organisations and granted for the same purpose.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP Sterling was Thursday’s top performer by a mile, adding an average of almost 1%. Over the week as a whole it was less assured, bringing up the rear on Wednesday. Even so, it managed an average gain of 0.4% with few losses. The only event in sterling’s week that really mattered was the Bank of England’s monetary policy statement.

Ahead of the announcement there had been a good deal of conjecture about negative interest rates: would the bank impose them, threaten them or steer away from the subject? It did none of those.

Governor Andrew Bailey simply said what he had said before: negative rates are in the bank’s toolbox but it currently has no intention to use them. Mr Bailey’s comments were taken as hawkish, especially as he offered the prospect of Covid vaccinations leading to a rapid recovery for the UK economy later this year.The pound enjoyed an impressive boost against the euro and US dollar, with GBP/EUR reaching a 9-month high, following the decision to hold interest rates at 0.1%, and reclaimed the week’s earlier losses against the US dollar.

UK economic data was not of great help to sterling, despite its strong performance. Mortgage approvals were once strong in December, and the services sector continues to struggle as a result of Covid restrictions. However, it appears hope is very much on the horizon, with plenty of newspapers carrying a degree of optimism in the week that UK chief medical advisor Prof Chris Whitty

acknowledged the second wave peak has passed.

EURO It wasn’t the same story for Europe though. The single currency has struggled in the wake of a stumbling vaccine rollout. The euro is facing a battle on more than one front too, falling to a month low against the US dollar after a week in which it delayed the export of vaccines from the bloc, and then surprisingly triggered Article 16 of the Northern Ireland protocol. While outrage over this move was temporary, and more level headed discussions are taking place to smooth things over, it hasn’t helped the euro in the eyes of investors.

There was better political news in midweek when there was confirmation that Italian President Sergio Mattarella had asked Mario Draghi to form a government. His nomination received the fulsome support of ex-Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and of investors who recall the success of Sig. Draghi as President of the European Central Bank.

Mario Draghi’s appearance on the scene was not enough to save the euro: Italy is not Germany, even if it one of the most precarious components of the currency union. But he probably did help to prevent it suffering further damage. Over the week the euro lost an average of 0.6%, faring slightly better than the Swiss franc. It lost more than a cent to sterling and lost one and a third US cents.

Pension increase agreed per child An extra payment into State pensions for parents per child will mostly benefit women, but not exclusively, the government has revealed this week.

Everyone who has a child of their own, including an adopted or foster child, will get €378 a year injected into their State retirement pension – a fixed sum per child up to a maximum of four.

Based upon a 12-month income per year, this means when a parent retires, he or she will receive €31.50 for every son or daughter, to a maximum of €126 a month if they have four or more children.

State pensions are, in fact, paid 14 times a year, with a double packet in August and at Christmas, meaning in practice, each pension payment will have been incremented by €27 per child, to a maximum of €108 and twice a year, by €54 for each child, to a maximum of €216.

The additional payment into the pension pot was initially for women only, but the European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruled this was discriminating against men. Spain's government explained that its single-gender plan had been because mums are traditionally more likely to see a drop in their income from work than dads, resulting in a lower retirement pension – currently, across the board, men's State pensions are 30 percent higher than women's, and the government wants to ensure 'retirement equality'.

To this end, the structure of the parental increment has changed, with the cash injection based upon reduction in salary during childcare years.

According to minister for inclusion and Social Security, José Luis Escrivá: “In the first two years after conceiving a child, mothers' earnings reduce in 98 percent of cases, but only 2 percent of cases see a fall in fathers' income – this means that over the years, and combined with the existing gender pay gap, women are more likely to end up with a smaller retirement pension.”

To qualify, parents need to show a reduction in income in the two years following the birth, rather than, as Escrivá says, the conception, of their child, or that becoming a mum or dad has 'affected their professional career'. If both parents show this, or if neither of them does, the right to the extra pension payment will automatically go to the mother.

Until now, this State payment only applied once a parent had two or more children, but now takes effect from the first, meaning nearly 30,000 more women will benefit from it in 2021 alone. It will also apply to pensions received for voluntary early retirement, which was not the case until now.

The sum will gradually rise in line with pension index-linking, but will not affect existing benefits received for those on the minimum or in receipt of the noncontributory State pension – it will not raise their income threshold and render them ineligible for these top-ups.

Escrivá says the system in favour of mothers will continue in place until the gender pension gap shrinks to less than 5 percent.

In seven regions of Spain, Covid19 patients now occupy over 50 percent of intensive care beds, with that figure rising to over 60percent in La Rioja, the Valencia region and the North Africa exclave city of Melilla.

María Jesús Montero insisted on the need to keep up the restrictions. “The epidemiological situation will have to be assessed regularly to adjust schedules and mobility,” she said after last week’s Cabinet meeting. “We can’t be in a rush with the deescalation. I am not addressing any region in particular.”

In Madrid, regional premier Isabel Díaz Ayuso defended her strategy of keeping food and drink establishments open, a decision that other regional leaders have questioned in recent days, including some from her own Popular Party (PP). “I cannot engage in confrontation with

other regional leaders,” she said. “The Madrid economy works in a certain way, and those of other regions have other peculiarities.”

Health Minister Carolina Darias has urged regional governments to expand their coronavirus measures in order to “bring down the numbers faster.” Under the current state of alarm approved by

parliament in October, regions are in charge of introducing their own restrictions, and each one has adopted different systems, with an overnight curfew being the only nationwide measure in place.

Pamplona will not be holding its Running of the Bulls this year. The regional premier of Navarre, María Chivite, said on Tuesday that the July event “will not be possible.”

“It wouldn’t be a responsible attitude on my part to fuel hopes of something that I think is not going to be possible,” she said. The world-famous fiesta, which attracts large crowds each year, was cancelled in 2020 as well due to coronavirus restrictions.

Meanwhile the mayor of Valencia, Joan Ribó, said that the city’s renowned Fallas festival, which involves pyrotechnics and giant burning sculptures, will not be held in the first half of the year, but that “I cannot assert that there won’t be any Fallas at all in 2021.” And the regional premier Ximo Puig ruled out the possibility of travel for the Easter holidays because “we are still in an extremely serious situation” and “we cannot send out a message of relaxation.”

Despite shipment delays, the vaccination campaign is still underway. Around 91 percent of doses that were delivered to regional governments have been administered, according to Health Ministry data. Some regional leaders have reiterated their wish to immunise a majority of the population by summer, but said this will depend on timely deliveries.

“We could vaccinate 70 percent of the population, but we need for the vaccines to arrive,” said Patricia Gómez, the chief of the health department of the Balearic Islands, inside the regional parliament.

The Spanish Health Ministry is considering whether to administer the coronavirus vaccines developed by AstraZeneca to people 65 and over.

Fernando Simón, the head of the Health Ministry’s Coordination Center for Health Alerts (CCAES), said it is highly likely that Spain will not recommend this medication for this age group, citing “insufficient available data” and mirroring

Valentine’s Day around the world The legend of St. Valentine is shrouded in mystery. The Catholic Church recognises at least three saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom were martyred. One legend says Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided single men made better soldiers than those with families, he outlawed marriage. Valentine continued to perform marriages in secret, causing Claudius to order he be put to death.

Other stories suggest Valentine was killed for attempting to help Christians escape Roman prisons.

It is also told that Valentine sent the first Valentine’s Day greeting. Yet another legend says Valentine fell in love while imprisoned, perhaps with the jailor’s daughter who visited him.

Before his death, he is said to have written her a letter and signed it “From your Valentine.”

Regardless of its origins, Valentine’s Day is celebrated around the world.

While 14th February marks a day of chocolate, flowers, greeting cards, and romantic dinners around the majority of English speaking counties in the western world, countries across the world also have their own unique ways to celebrate St.

Valentine.

United Kingdom The celebration of Valentine’s Day is alive and well in the United Kingdom. In a tradition dating back to the Victorian era, anonymous valentines are sent to romantic interests.

Victorians believed signing their name to the card was considered bad luck. The United Kingdom also started the tradition of giving roses on Valentine’s Day. The flower is traditionally seen as the favourite of Venus, the Roman goddess of love.

Wales Rather than celebrate love on 14th February, the WelSh celebrate St. Dwynwen’s Day on 25th January. St. Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers and men traditionally gift women with hand-carved wooden spoons. The tradition is based on the notion that Welsh sailors carved designs into wooden spoons while at sea to bring back to their lovers at home.

Japan In Japan, women make the first move on Valentine’s Day. They give men gifts instead of the other way around, a popular gift being honmei-choco, a homemade chocolate. Men return the gesture on 14th March.

Known as

White Day, men give women white chocolate and other white gifts as a sign of their affection.

South Korea As in Japan, women in South Korea give gifts to

men on Valentine’s Day while men celebrate White Day. South Korea has a third holiday, however, known as Black Day. Celebrated on 14th April, single friends gather to eat noodles and

celebrate being single.

The name comes from the noodle dish, which includes white noodles in a black sauce.

Slovenia In Slovenia, 14th February is considered a prime day for working in the fields as St. Valentine is one of the patron saints of spring. Slovenians typically celebrate romance a month

later, on St. Gregory’s Day, which falls on 12th March.

Finland and Estonia Finland and Estonia celebrate Friend’s Day on 14th February, a day for honouring both friends and significant others. Cards and gifts are still given out, and can be for anyone from a best friend to a neighbour. The 14th February is also a popular day to get engaged in both countries. Additionally, Estonia has an interesting tradition for single people they can take a ride on the Love Bus in hopes of meeting someone special.

Spain’s to allow people change official Most Influential Spaniards 2020 is all female for the gender without medical checks Spain’s Equality Ministry has prepared a draft bill that would allow transgender people to officially change their gender with the Spanish authorities and on their ID document without a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria. Under the planned legislation, titled the “law for real and effective equality for trans people,” an individual aged 16 or over would be able to change their name and gender in the civil registry with a sworn statement. Sixteen is also the minimum age from which a person can make decisions about hormone treatments.

The text of the draft bill also recognises non-binary people – who identify as neither male nor female – and proposes eliminating the gender field on official documents. It would also open access to assisted-reproductive treatment to “trans people who are able to reproduce.”

The Equality Ministry, led by Irene Montero of Unidas Podemos, met with more than 20 different LGBTQ+ and trans collectives to finalise the future law, which is based on an initiative Unidas Podemos presented in 2017.

However, the draft law has been met with opposition from some women’s groups and feminist organisations, such as Against the Elimination of Women, which represents around 100 women’s organisations, and Feminist Convergence Movement, which represents 40. Both groups believe that the distinction between sex and gender must be preserved, arguing that gender self-identification “eliminates” the experience of women. Sources from the government say the draft bill has still a long way to go before it appears before Cabinet.

Key points: Right to gender self-expression.

Spain has allowed an individual to change their name and gender on their DNI without gender reassignment surgery since 2007. But in order to change their gender, a person must provide evidence of a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria – the discomfort people can feel if their gender identity does not match their body. This is not required under the draft bill for individuals over the age of 16, nor does a person need to undergo any type of medical or surgical procedure.

Hormone treatment and minors. In the case of minors, the bill considers allowing hormone blockers “at the onset of puberty” to help suppress the development of breasts and facial hair, followed by cross-sex hormone therapy – testosterone for trans men and estrogen for trans women. Minors under the age of 18 also must have parental consent.

Legal defender. The bill gives individuals from the age of 16 the final word on what their gender and name are on their DNI. Minors between the ages of 12 and 16 who want to make a change at the Civil Registry must do so via their legal representative, who is usually a family member. If this family member does not agree with the decision, a “legal defender” will be named for the minor.

Prospective rights. The text allows a person “to exercise all the rights inherent to their new condition” as a man or woman, but it does not allow these rights to be given retrospectively. The bill outlines that “it will not change the ownership of rights and legal obligations that could correspond to a person before

their registry change was inscribed,” making specific mention of the genderviolence law.

Recognition of non-binary people.

The text allows an individual for the first time to request that their official documents omit any mention of gender.

Assisted reproductive treatment.

Under the bill, trans people “with the ability to reproduce” will have access to assisted reproductive technologies. It also contemplates allowing people undergoing hormone treatment to freeze their eggs and reproductive cells.

Sports. For sporting exercises, events and competitions, trans people will be able to participate “according to their registered gender,” under the draft. “Sex verification” tests will also be banned.

Prisons. The bill gives trans people the right to “be treated and separated according to their registered gender” should they be incarcerated, unless they believe this will endanger their safety.

Education. The bill “guarantees” the right of trans students to express their gender identity. A student’s “physical image, choice of clothing and access and use of facilities of an education centre according to their gender identity must be respected,” the document states.

Foreigners. The draft law also gives foreign residents in Spain the right to gender self-identification, “regardless of their administrative situation.”

Work. Trans people can face many difficulties when searching for work. To address this problem, the bill establishes incentives for workplaces that hire “unemployed trans people, with special difficulties in joining the workforce.”

Help Vega Baja soldiers on HELP Vega Baja is a registered charity established more than 40 years ago to support people in need and other likeminded charities. In “normal” times it offers several services in addition to the day-to-day advice and information it provides, which includes various friendship groups, support groups, talks and a befriending service. Sadly, these have all had to be put on hold until it receives the go ahead from the government on group gatherings.

From its head office in San Miguel and helpdesk in La Marina the charity covers the Vega Baja area from La Marina to Pilar de la Horadada across to Orihuela inland - or from further afield when this can be done by phone or email.

The San Miguel Centre is also where Help Vega Baja has its charity shop and mobility equipment hire centre. It offers a membership to the charity for just 10 euros a year which can be applied for online at: www.helpvegabaja.com or at either of the offices. This provides numerous discounts and free services from local organisations such as Quiron Salud Hospital who offer charity members annual blood analysis, dental clean etc. Other benefits include a free 150 euros per annum interpreter service which is a popular benefit for those attending their local doctor, hospital etc.

Over the years Help Vega Baja has supported hundreds of people. For example, when the floods hit the Vega

Baja area in 2019, the charity donated more than 76,000 euros and much of this was directed towards those most affected by the flood disaster.

For the charity to remain able to support people it depends heavily on volunteers, local businesses, and other supporters. Fundraising events, sales from our shop and a market stall at Campoamor usually bring in funds that can then be passed on to families experiencing difficult times.

However, because of the Covid pandemic, the market stall has had to close, fundraising events are not permitted and sales in our shop have decreased considerably due to people (quite rightly) staying home. The shop is now currently open on a Wednesday only to save costs on utilities etc. This has, and continues to have, a significant impact on the charity.

The Elective Committee continues to work from home, and is dealing with a huge increase in the requests for support from families affected from the pandemic through loss of work, many of whom are in debt for rent and utilities and with little hope of work soon. The charity offers food vouchers where possible to ensure that nobody goes without food (volunteers have discovered several families who have been doing what they can to meet their

commitments by missing meals). One of the most important things that the charity has been doing is to inform people of initiatives as they are released that they may apply for and of having frank conversations about their future here in Spain where this is needed.

No Enthusiasm I live alone and often stay in bed until midday to avoid the loneliness in Lockdown. Then I spend a lot of time on my phone messaging family at home, but they too are depressed with the situation so there is no relief. When you read the papers or watch the news it's dominated by the Corona Virus crisis. I am depressed at not being able to see my friends right now.

Of course none of us can do anything about the situation, but we can do something about how we deal with it. You can be miserable and not get out of bed each day, or you can put some structure into your day to make things more bearable. Put your alarm on and get up at a reasonable time. Then vow to go out for a brisk hour long walk or bike ride. We have a beautiful climate here so there's no excuse; think what our family and friends are facing in the UK - dreadfully cold and dark weather that keeps them indoors. Make sure you eat well – buy healthy food and occupy yourself with cooking lovely dishes for each meal, and why not mix yourself up a freshly prepared juice each morning? Sit outdoors to eat if you can and get some Vit D from the sunshine, put some soothing or inspirational music on. You can still meet up with people safely here – there are many cafes that are open near the beach to have a takeaway coffee, so you could meet up with a friends and sit in the fresh air safely while socially distancing, or why not take a picnic? Come right away from reading the newspaper or watching the news on TV. Don’t sit in front of the TV until after the sun has gone down, and then watch DVDs of your favourite light-hearted programmes.

Is too much herbal tea bad for you?

There are countless articles expounding the beneficial properties of herbal teas.

However, as with almost everything when something is done to excess there can be a risk and with herbal teas, we need to be clear about how and how often we should take them. “It is true that consuming herbal teas and infusions in our diet is a good habit when it comes to improving the general state of the body. But like everything, in excess, it can be harmful to the body. In principle, 1-2 cups of these infusions a day would be enough to experience their beneficial effect,” explained pharmacist Mar Sieira.

She also outlined some of the precautions we have should take, especially when it comes to teas based in medicinal plants.

Diuretic teas In the case of diuretic teas, (such as dandelion, horsetail or artichoke, among others) that prompt the elimination of fluids from the body, we should be careful of consuming them in excess, because we could eliminate nutrients and minerals that our body needs.

Stimulating teas Green tea, although it is highly regarded for its detox effects as well as its lipolytic characteristics (ideal for dieters), it also contains high amounts of theine, which is a stimulant similar to caffeine, so it is not recommended for people with high blood pressure, heart problems or arrhythmias. It is also not ideal for people with stomach ulcers or

have digestive disorders. It has a potentially irritating effect on the digestive tract due to its theine content, a characteristic also shared by other teas such as black, white or red. “In addition, tea can prevent the correct absorption of iron, so it should be taken into account in those people who have anaemia or a predisposition to develop it”, explained Sieira.

Relaxing teas Within this group of teas we have such infusions such as valerian, which is used to reduce nervousness and agitation, facilitating sleep and improving sleep quality.

“Their prolonged consumption can be toxic and, therefore, it is recommended to establish rest periods during treatment. In addition, abusing intake can produce adverse effects such as headache, confusion, lack of mental agility, nervousness, or irritability,” said Sieira.

Digestive infusions Herbal teas with digestive properties are a perfect way to alleviate that feeling of heaviness and bloating that we may feel after eating. Plants of various kinds are used, largely from the aromatic variety (such as mint or rosemary).

“Although most of the infusions that are used for digestive purposes are usually very safe and do not generally entail adverse effects their use, some such as thyme, oregano, or mint could irritate the digestive tract if they are consumed in excess,” concluded Sieira.

Biker ‘Airbag Jeans’ Airbag jackets and vests are now a reality. At this year's Dakar Rally, airbag vests were a mandatory safety item for motorcyclists. Now, bikers can avail of trousers with a built-in airbag.

French start-up CX Air Dynamics Airbag motorcycle trousers are now available for €375 (plus shipping) with a 25% discount on the future standard

price. If the project is completed as planned, the trousers will be delivered in March 2021. The airbag in the trousers is not activated by an electrical system, but rather is attached to the bike or motorcycle with a strap and clip.

If the driver falls off, this strap will activate the airbag. According to the company they inflate in less than 200

milliseconds with a small cartridge containing compressed air. The compressed air cartridge can be replaced after use. The material of the trousers is breathable, resistant to water and abrasion. They have a foam padding that absorbs impacts (up to 90% of the energy), but is flexible and comfortable at the same time.

Swedish prototype Another airbag activation system is being developed by Swedish firm Airbag Inside Sweden Ab (AIS). The system is similar to the French one, a strap and clip are attached to the bike or motorcycle and activated the moment its driver falls. The fabric incorporates a technology used in space research that stands up to 14 times more friction than steel despite being 8 times lighter.

The Mini Eye in the Sky Since 2019, the DGT has used eleven drones to monitor, control and manage traffic. They are primarily intended for traffic surveillance and, according to the rules that regulate its operation, “in particular through these systems, the following will be intensified: surveillance in risky sections; those aimed at the protection of vulnerable users of roads in transit, in particular, cyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians; monitoring distractions while driving; and speed controls”.

Three drones have the technical report from the Spanish Metrology Centre to monitor traffic and detect violations, while the remaining 8 are used to monitor and regulate traffic.

In fact, between January to August 2020, the drones –which have flown more than 430 hours: 316 for surveillance and 55 for regulation– had captured 220 infractions, the majority for not respecting road priority (28%). They also highlight the incorrect use of seat belts (16%), the use of the mobile phone behind the wheel (12%) or not respecting the longitudinal markings of the road (12%). A clear example in the protection of vulnerable people is that 4% of the infractions captured by drones are for overtaking cyclists without respecting the minimum safety distance.

This is how it works, step by step 1: CHOOSE THE SECTION TO WATCH Based on their data, the provincial heads of the DGT and the subsectors of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, are the ones who determine which sections would need drones to monitor the

movement. With these data, and taking into account the limitations due to security reasons (uncontrolled airspace, far from aerodromes and airports, possibility of parking a unit to carry out the control ...), a list of mission areas and a calendar of dates and sections is created.

2: A SAFE LAUNCH BASE Once the point to be monitored with the drones has been determined in advance and in accordance with the Provincial Traffic Headquarters, a point close to the section to be monitored is chosen where the van of the Air Media Unit (UMA) can be safely parked. There, said unit deploys a windsock –to control the direction and speed of the wind, which can affect the flight–, and marks a security perimeter on the ground where the drone will take off and land.

3: ASSEMBLE AND CHECK The next step is to assemble the drone (which travels disassembled and protected) and to check the operation and calibration of the device and the cameras that will serve to monitor the road and capture and record possible infractions. Afterwards, it is located in the safety area for take-off and, once the battery is installed - with a flight autonomy of about 20 minutes, depending on the characteristics of the flight and the weather - the device is

ready to undertake the mission.

4: TWO OPERATORS The two operators involved in the surveillance make the drone take off, which on its flight will not cross the road - unless expressly authorised - nor will it fly above 120 meters, or near strategic places - airfields, airports, security facilities ... - and always in the pilot's field of vision. The drone is always operated by an accredited pilot who controls the flight; the camera can be controlled and managed either by an official of the UMA or by an agent of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard, which determines the way of notifying the fine.

5: FLYING AND OBSERVING Then begins the most difficult part of the mission. The drone flies over the vicinity of the road at the point or points

where surveillance is requested - for example, in our specific case it was a crossing regulated by a Stop sign.

Meanwhile, the camera operator is dedicated to observing and monitoring the manoeuvres of the drivers, whose infractions are recorded on computer media in the equipment that moves the Air Resources Unit.

6: NOTIFY THE COMPLAINT Depending on the availability, or not, a patrol of the Traffic Group of the Civil Guard is located in the vicinity of the guarded road and, in the event of an infraction, following the instructions of the drone camera operator, stops the responsible driver and notifiesthem of the opening of the sanctioning file on site. Naturally, except in cases where it is impossible to do so determined by the corresponding regulations.

British number plates given ‘historic’ makeover Driving licences in the UK have been given an historic overhaul as new regulations make it easier for Britons to drive their vehicles within the EU. The Department for Transport unveiled new designs showing an updated driving licence and a new number plate without the distinctive blue band on the left-hand side.

New number plates and licences without the EU flag have been issued since January 1st 2021. Existing versions will still be valid for driving but the new designs will be used when renewing a licence.

A new agreement between the UK and 27 EU states plus Switzerland and Norway forgoes the need for a £5.50 international driving permit.

Most UK drivers cannot leave the country under current lockdown rules, but when the situation regularises again, motorists will not need to display a GB sticker in most EU countries if their number plate has GB or GB with a Union Flag on it.

Another image shared on Twitter by Transport Secretary Grant Shapps revealed that the Union Jack will be added to the green band on plates specially made for electric vehicles.

Mr Shapps said: “Changing the designs of our driving licences and number plates is a historic moment for British motorists.

“Looking to the future, whether it’s for work or for holidays abroad, these changes mean that those who want to drive in the EU can continue to do so with ease.”

The DGTrevealed how a sneezing fit of just 5 seconds, means that a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour covers a distance of 125 metres, the distance greater than a football field, when the driver´s attention is distracted as a result. The sneezing fit can often last longer than 5 seconds though, perhaps 8, 10 or more, with the vehicle continuing to travel without the driver´s full attention.

On a normal, dry road, the overall stopping distance for a car travelling at 90 kilometres per hour is calculated at 65.7 metres, just half of the distance covered during our 5 second sneezing fit. During the reaction time alone, the vehicle would have travelled 25 metres.

In other words, in the event of an incident ahead, there would not be enough time to react and stop.

Sneezing is only one symptom of an allergic reaction, most commonly Hay Fever at this time of year, severe itching of the eyes, irritation, congestion or a runny nose, light sensitivity and many more combinations of symptoms, all make driving particularly problematic for sufferers.

Tom Brady guided the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to a 31-9 win over the Kansas City Chiefs to bring his record for Super Bowl wins to seven.

In Brady’s first season at his new side after a dazzling 20-year spell with the New England Patriots, the quarterback helped Tampa Bay become the first team to play a Super Bowl in their own stadium.

Kansas City and their vibrant young quarterback Patrick Mahomes, had come in as favourites, but Brady threw three touchdown passes to prevent the Chiefs becoming the first back-toback NFL champions since Brady and the Patriots in 2004.

At 43 years and 188 days, Brady became the oldest player to play in the biggest game in US sport, extending his record for Super Bowl appearances to 10 and joining Peyton Manning as the only quarterbacks to win Super Bowls with two different teams.

Already widely considered the

greatest NFL player of all time, Brady decided to leave New England in the off-season in search of a new challenge and joined the Buccaneers, whose only previous Super Bowl win
