Bad news for Orihuela Costa’s Municipal Sports Centre H opes that the closure of Orihuela Costa’s Municipal Sports Centre would soon end were dashed at this week’s plenary meeting of the Town Council when the government coalition of Popular Party and Ciudadanos defeated a C.L.A.R.O-Cambiemos motion calling for its immediate reopening. The joint motion, as well as calling for the Centre’s immediate reopening also called for a study to change the management from private to public and for a reduction of the high prices which the centre has charged compared to those of Orihuela city and neighbouring municipalities. The most outspoken opponent of the motion was Juan Ignacio Lopez Bas, the Ciudadanos party leader. Expressing his party’s well known preference for contracting public services to private operators, he was unyielding and unapologetic in his opposition to the motion. Although also voting against, the
Popular Party’s councillor for Sports said in the meeting that his party would do all that was possible to meet the demands of the motion. Fine words which show that the Popular Party has not given up hope that they will retain support from Orihuela Costa voters in next month’s municipal elections. A C.L.A.R.O spokesman said: “Ciudadanos seem to think that voters will ignore their lack of concern for residents’ needs not only regarding the sports centre but also glaringly for infrastructure for which their leader is directly responsible. He holds the record for gross neglect of Orihuela Costa roads which are plagued by potholes causing constant damage to cars.” Image above right: Employees and residents protesting in front of Playa Flamenca Town Hall against recent closure of Orihuela Costa Municipal Sports Centre.

Charity concert Councillor Carmen Morate and Maximiliano Merinero have announced a charity concert to be held on Sunday 5th May at 7pm at the Virgen del Carmen cultural centre. The concert will be for la Asociación de Protección y Ayuda al Ex Alcohólico (Apaex). The performing choirs will include ‘Coral Bella Torrevieja’ and ‘Sol y Sal’ directed by Olga Vasilovskaya. There is a five euro entry fee but additional donations will be welcome. You can call 620378713 for more information. Maximiliano is a member of Apaex as well as being a member of the choir Coral Bella Torrevieja. He explained at a press conference more about the association which was founded in 1990 and provides assistance, both medical and psychological, to people affected by the problem of alcohol dependence and other addictions. They offer specialist programmes and techniques and provide a very important service.
Contracts awarded The average age of people living in Torrevieja is 68 years old. Many of these people live alone and struggle to take care of themselves and their home. Now a contract has been drawn up to support a home help service in the town. The contract is for four years and amounts to €556,756.20. It is unclear how many people this service will be able to help at this stage. A contract has also been awarded by the local government team for veterinary services for the animal shelter. One of these Continued on page 5
The recent torrential rains reaching up to 17.3 centimetres (6.8 inches) on the east coast has helped replenish ailing reservoirs which have been struggling to remain topped up after several years of either drought or well-below average rainfall. Water sources, including rivers, wells and man-made lake-sized deposits, increased by 0.7 percent over the four-day holiday alone, acquiring 390 cubic hectometres, or 39,000 cubic metres. Reservoirs among those that rose the most over the weekend were here, in the
Comunidad Valenciana, which went up by 2.45 percent, or 60 cubic hectometres - a much-needed increment, given that even now they are only 37.68 percent full, as it is one of the parts of the country most troubled by drought over the past six years or so. Murcia, which has always suffered from water shortages, was hit by over seven centimetres (nearly three inches) of rain, which bolstered the Segura river basin considerably and means a full supply is guaranteed for farmers and residential homes over spring and summer.
Animal shelter to charge for some services From the 1st May there will be charges for some of the services which the animal shelter in Torrevieja provides. Time and energy is spent picking up dogs that have strayed from their homes, sometimes due to lack of vigilance or interest on the owner’s part. Now, the intention is to put into practice a requirement for owners to pay if their animal has had to be collected and kept in the shelter. It was suggested as far back as October 2010 that the shelter apply a fee for collection and caring for animals whilst their owner was found, but for some reason it was never acted upon. ‘We know that many of the lost animals we pick up have wandered due to their owners not taking the proper measures to ensure they don’t stray,’ explains Councillor Carmen Morate. ‘The charges will not be high, unlike those that can be applied by
the Local Police of more than €1,000.’ For collecting an animal from the public highway, the cost will be €26.20. If the animal is then taken to the shelter it will be an additional €16.40. An extra charge of €6.50 will be levied for every day that the animal stays in the shelter. The charges will be payable in the bank and the owner will need to show proof of payment to collect their animal again. Further charges may be applied if veterinary care is needed. For example, for implanting a microchip where the animal doesn’t have one or for deworming which will cost the owner €3.30 if it is needed. ‘We believe that these measures will be positive in the long term,’ explained the councillor. ‘Taxpayers should not have to pay for these services but those owners who lose their pets in the first place.’ Suzanne O’Connell

Day of dance in Torrevieja It was a beautiful Saturday afternoon and a perfect setting for the street dance section of the day of dance festivities in Torrevieja. Every year, there is a day when the different academies and dance groups in the town come together to show off their talents and dances to the crowd. This year was the seventh time that dancers got together on the street to show passers by what they can do. There is no entry fee, because there is no entrance. The dancing takes place on the ground and people jostle around the dancers to get a good view. The setting, in las piscinas this year, did mean that some people were able to find an elevated position from where they had a better view. Also this year, a large mat was fixed to the ground providing a slightly more
comfortable dancing surface than there has been previously. There was a mix of styles including flamenco and classical but also modern and hip hop. There were inventive costumes and numerous creative and entertaining themes including the Gremlins’ superhero dance and Furby’s cancer awareness performance. The dance marathon began at 5pm and for once started on time. Half way through, all participants got together for a flash dance performance led by Cristian Knowles. There were one or two hold ups with the music but by and large the event went more smoothly than in previous years and set a hard act to follow for the years to come. Suzanne O’Connell
Decorating Torrevieja with graffiti Graffiti isn’t usually associated with efforts to brighten up the environment. However, on 25th, 26th and 27th April, eight graffiti artists picked up their spray paint and began to officially decorate ten walls around the town. The competition was organised by Alicante University and the artists began their work on Thursday 25th April and had until Saturday 27th April at 12pm to show what they could do. The artists themselves were variously known as ‘Jacobo Palos Way’, ‘Chakan’, ‘M33?, ‘Kike’, ‘Eneko’, ‘Max501’, ‘Nego’ and ‘Dheser’. Their ‘canvases’ were walls that had been volunteered by businesses and individuals around the town. After the painting had stopped a jury made up of teachers from the town’s art school, local painters, engineers from the youth department and specialists from Alicante University came together to
give their verdict. They were looking for the quality of art work as well as originality. The first prize of €1,000 was awarded to Jacobo Palos Wey with his image of a child and the words ‘No se Toca’ or ‘don’t touch’. The second prize of €600 went to Nego for his ‘Pez plástico’ or plastic fish which you can now see on calle Ramón y Cajal, 14. The third prize of €400 went to Antoñito for a painting in calle Los gases, 85. All the artists were awarded €100 as payment for the work they had done. Over the same weekend an art workshop was held on Saturday 27th for young people between the ages of 12 and 17. This took place from 10am until 1pm on the Paseo Juan Aparicio, in front of the CIAJ youth building. Suzanne O’Connell

BITE SIZE Los Pistoleros NEWS: dine and donate Continued from page 3 is for general veterinary services and the second includes hospitalisation and 24 hour veterinary care. Extensions have been granted for the replacement of the artificial turf at the football fields and athletic tracks. The extension will take the work until May 25th. It is thought that the heavy rains last weekend have made it difficult to keep to the planned completion dates. It is still hoped, however, that the work will be completed before this extended deadline.
On Saturday 27th April the members and friends of Los Pistoleros, Westerners Association came together for their annual presentation dance. Along with dining, dancing and generally having a good time, the evening is about presenting the money raised to their chosen charities. The event was held at Restaurant Danmark and the delicious two course carvery was prepared by Carmen’s Bar, El Chaparral. Following the meal entertainment was provided by Charles
What’s coming up at the Torevieja auditorium? The International Auditorium in Torrevieja has become a very popular venue. Only a few years ago there seemed to be few events held there. Now, there’s a full itinerary with a variety of shows, performances and competitions across all age groups. On Friday 10th May it is the turn of Russian cossacks to entertain the audience with their dancing. There will be around fifty performers including singers, dancers, acrobats, all dressed in traditional costumes from the different cossack regions. This dance company is well-known across the world and performed for the 60th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth in May 2013. On Saturday 11th May it is Torrevieja’s Symphonic Orchestra that will be playing Spanish music at 7pm with tickets priced from €10 to €25. On Sunday 17th May Luis Cepeda will peform his first album ‘Principios’after releasing his first single‘Esta Vez’which reached number 1 in the Spanish sales charts. On 25th May la Unión Musical Torrevejense will play‘Shakespeare in Music’. This performance will consist of pieces inspired by Shakespeare including the suite of Romeo and Juliet and the dances of West Side Story. More information including other performances can be seen by visiting the website https://auditoriotorrevieja.com/eventos/

A cheque is presented to the director of the San José Obrero Orphanage Cole of Cole’s Country. The varied selection of outlaws, hillbillies, saloon girls, preachers, cowboys, Mexicans and Indians sat down to dine together and then enjoyed dancing to the country music. Los Pistoleros are reenactors who act out scenes such as bank heists, barroom brawls and shoot outs. It is good entertainment for those who watch and a passion for those who take part. However, the presentation dance is about giving Carmen’s bar provided the carvery
recognition and money to just some of the charities that make differences to people’s lives in the community. This year five different charities were presented with cheques. A cheque for €1,000 was given to AECC (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer); €500 to Reach out/ extiende la mano; €500 to the Butterfly Children; €400 to San José Obrero Orphanage and €100 to Farleigh Hospice. The charities are chosen at the association’s AGM. Alongside the presentation of charity money is the presentation of a trophy to the shoot-out winner. The shoot-out is held during their monthly meetings as members practise their fast draw skills. Nobody is injured, of course, as the targets are balloons. This year the overall winner of the shoot-out competition was The Marshal (Brian Williams). He received the Dave ‘Doc’ Skinner trophy which was donated in memory of one of the founding members of the group. The association first began in 2009 with 14 members. Since then it has kept on growing and now around 40 members meet regularly to share their interest, raise charity money and, of course, have a good time. They meet on the first Wednesday of every month in The Tavern at Lo Crispin at 3pm. Central to the success of the group is their dedicated membership but they also have a number of friends, family and associates who support them throughout the year too. Los Pistoleros would like to thank everyone who has contributed to the success of this fun, dynamic and justa-little-different organisation. www.lospistoleros.info Suzanne O’Connell

Robbery at BITE SIZE chiringuito NEWS: Continued from page 5
Thieves have stolen goods worth €5,000 from a beach bar on La Mata beach. The robbers entered the premises through the roof, disabled the security and made their get away in the early hours of the morning when the bar was closed. It is believed that the same people had tried to rob another bar this time on Los Locos beach. It is thought that the robbery and the attempted robbery took place on either Tuesday or Wednesday, early in the morning. They took €5,000 worth of goods including bottles of alcohol, food products and IT equipment used at the bar. The robbery has been denounced at the Guardia Civil police station and is believed to have taken place at around four in the morning. The bar was robbed in a similar fashion last summer and because of this the owners had taken out new
security measures to try and prevent the same thing from happening again. However, the robbers came equipped and forced the roof of the chiringuito and then opened an access door, cutting the padlocks. Lack of business over the Easter period meant that the bar was still full of drinks and other items for the thieves to steal. They were able to help themselves to a number of different products with commercial value as well as the tablets used by the bar staff to take orders. The owner of the bar is critical of the lack of general security in the area and must now quickly equip the premises again for what’s hoped to be an increase in custom over the next few months. A second attempt to rob a chiringuito in Los Locos was not successful. Suzanne O’Connell
The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, met with the new managing director of Torrevieja hospital, Eva Baró and the medical director of primary care, Hipólito Caro. The meeting was an informal one and discussion was around subjects of current importance to the hospital such as the difficulties with hiring medical staff. This is likely to become an even more crucial issue in the coming years as a number of specialists and family doctors are due for retirement.

Permanent contraceptive under fire Four years ago, Andrea Arango (39 years old) decided to put her pregnancy worries behind her and invest in Essure, a permanent contraceptive consisting of two nickel and titanium springs that seal the fallopian tubes. In 2017 the contraceptive was taken off the market but not before Andrea, who already had three children, decided it could be the right choice for her. Essure was chosen by more than 8,000 Spanish women but for Andrea it is has triggered continuous pain and discomfort. ‘They didn’t do any kind of allergic test on me and I have reacted to the device and now need it removing urgently, ’ she explained to Spanish reporters. Now many women like Andrea are waiting to have the device removed and feel let down by the way that it was sold to them and the wait they are experiencing in having the procedure reversed. She hopes that once the springs
have been removed then her life will be able to return to normal without the constant pain she currently endures and the impact this is having on her life and that of her children. Andrea has asked for a complete hysterectomy but some of those with the device are not even aware that the symptoms they are experiencing are linked to the contraceptive. The problems experienced by women with Essure are global and now the only market where it is still promoted is within the US. The coils are inserted into the fallopian tubes where they trigger inflammation causing scar tissue to build up, eventually blocking the tubes and preventing pregnancy. However, in some cases the intervention causes intense pain and allergic reactions. Sometimes the device has perforated the fallopian tube, fallen out and embedded itself somewhere else. Paella, flamenco and photos at Habaneras Habaneras shopping centre welcomed the spring on 26th April with a giant paella and a demonstration of flamenco dancing. Three hundred people took their share of the giant paella alongside the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón and the councillor for commerce, Manuela Osuna. Along with sampling the paella visitors could enjoy a number of different activities including a display of sevillanas and flamenco. Aire Flamenco entertained
with Enrique Larosa on guitar and the dance of Carmen Romero. They were joined later by dancers from Soul Dance Studio who also performed flamenco. In the morning, councillor Fanny Serrano visited the exhibition room in the Habaneras shopping centre in order to see the display of photographs called ‘Torrevieja: La sal de un Paisaje’ or ‘A landscape of salt. This is part of an exhibition which was first shown in October 2015 and consisted of up to 50
photographs of the most spectacular landscapes in the city. The images have been taken by some well-known photographers including Joaquín Carrión, Pedro Grimao and Antonio Sáez. ‘This exhibition presents some unknown images of Torrevieja which give people insight into the environmental charms of our town,’ explained councillor Serrano. A CELEBRATION FOR ANIMAL LOVERS On Tuesday 30th April there will be an event dedicated to those who have expressed and acted on their love of animals over the past few years. The event has been organised by Councillor Carmen Morate and will take place in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural Centre at 8pm. The intention behind the event is to thank all those people who do their best to ensure the welfare of animals in Torrevieja. ‘I’m inviting all those people
who are lovers of and defenders of animals,’ explained the councillor at a press conference. ‘All those people who have adopted, walked and fostered animals, who have volunteered to help them and have been there for them at the animal shelter.’ Councillor Morate also wished to show her appreciation to the public services too that have helped to maintain the best service possible at the shelter. ‘At first it
seemed like an impossible project,’ explained the councillor. ‘But I think we have turned Torrevieja into a conscious and participative town. There is still a long way to go but we have taken the first steps and will not stop now.’ The event is intended to pay tribute to all those who have supported the Department of Animal Protection since 2015. LEARNING ABOUT THE LAKES The third ‘Lagunas de Torrevieja y la Mata: Paisaje Cultural, Historia y Patrimonio’ ‘Landscape Culture, History and Heritage’ will be held from 3rd to 11th May. The week is aimed at raising awareness of the history behind the lakes of La Mata and Torrevieja including environmental and heritage information. The lakes are seen as a key way of encouraging all year round tourism and developing the identity of Torrevieja as more than just sun, sea and sand. The week begins on Friday 3rd May
with a conference led by a medieval historian from the University of Alicante. This takes place in the town hall at 8pm. On 10th May there will be a talk about the salt mills in the town again at 8pm. Admission is free but there is limited seating. There will be two field trips on 4th and 11th May from 10am until 12pm. These excursions are entitled ‘Discover the pink lake on two wheels’. They include a cycle route of 17 kilometres that takes you round some of the key places of interest
when it comes to the salt production in the town. The tour sets off from the Monumento al salinero at 10am and finishes at 12pm. Those wanting to take part must wear a helmet and have their own repair kit. This last activity has limited places with about 25 people taking part. In order to register you should visit the webpage http://torreviejaua.eventbrite.es/ Suzanne O’Connell

Sponsored walk success On Saturday 6th April a sponsored walk was held along the coastal road in Torrevieja and back in aid of the San José Obrero Orphanage. The weather wasn’t ideal but it was still a good turn out to raise money for the children who live and study there. The event was organised by Viv and Alan Paterson of The Irish Rover, calle Wackman and set off from the 222 Bar Playa Los Locos. Viv and Alan have taken up the orphanage cause with enthusiasm and were keen to make sure as much was raised as possible. In the end the money they collected amounted to €2,750 along with 86 Easter eggs for the children. The money and eggs were handed over to the Director of the Orphanage who thanked everyone for The walkers back in Torrevieja
their efforts. Not only was it a successful fundraising event, but the people who took part enjoyed themselves too. Some came in fancy dress with an Easter theme and everyone entered into the spirit of the occasion. The 5km walk was just the right length for those taking part and the main obstacle was the wind. San José Obrero Orphanage relies upon donations for some items that we would consider to be essential for the care and welfare of the children and young people who live there. In the past, money has been used to buy items for the children such as summer clothing, towels and toiletries. Suzanne O’Connell

GBP / EUR UPDATE With parliament on Easter break and many financial centres closed for the Easter break, it was a slow start to the week for the pound. At the end of last week, UK retail sales increased 1.1% in March, beating forecast and caused small, brief gains for the pound but it was short lived. Brexit returned as the defining factor for the pound after Easter after parliament resumed and reports came in that cross-party talks on Brexit were not progressing. There was also talk of a possible leadership challenge for Theresa May which sent the pound lower until it was ruled out. That news saw sterling fall half a cent against the US dollar and half a Yen, but it remained unchanged against the euro and recovered equilibrium after the possibility was ruled out. Public sector borrowing figured showed that there was a significant reduction of 41% and the figures for the latest financial year (April 2018 – April 2019)) was £24.7billion, the lowest since FY 2001 – 2002. However, the numbers missed the forecast by £1.9billion and therefore the news wasn’t all positive for the pound. PMI figures are due from the
UK next week, together with the CBI’s confidence index and the meeting minutes of the Bank of England – whether or not these results will impact the pound depend not just on the results, but also whether there will be any developments on the Brexit front. The biggest influence on the euro this week came from Germany. Although the provisional manufacturing PMI showed an improvement from March, at 44.5 it was less than the hoped-for 45 and the euro lost a quarter of a cent on the news. It wasn’t just in Germany that the numbers disappointed; all three pan-Euroland PMIs fell short of forecast. More impact was felt from the unexpected result of the IFO's three measures of German business confidence. These were both below forecast and lower on the month, and the euro lost three-fifths of a US cent on the news. The euro is showing some vulnerability from the raft of disappointing statistics but largely holding steady in the market; however, investors may be looking for better news in the coming weeks to give the central currency a boost.
Two people stabbed in front of Ryanair check-in desk Two people have been stabbed in a double knife attack near the Ryanair check-in desks of a busy Spanish airport. A 25-year-old woman was stabbed in the ear whilst a man who came to her rescue suffered cuts to his hand in the incident at Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suarez Airport. Witnesses said a man started to argue aggressively with a woman before he pulled out a knife and attacked her in what detectives have described as a "random attack". A man nearby saw what was happening and came to help the woman but he was thrown to the ground and the knife was held to his neck, it is alleged. The 'good Samaritan' had bravely tried to grab the knife from the attacker when he witnessed the stabbing. Police say an officer on duty a few yards away had to pull out his gun and there are reports a flight attendant also helped to restrain the attacker. The officer ordered the man to throw the knife down - which he did, according to reports. Both of the victims were taken to hospital and treated for minor injuries after the violent attack. It is understood the woman was from Mexico and the man who helped her was a Romanian, aged 48. A 30-year-old Spanish man has been arrested in relation to the incident which is being dealt with by Spanish National Police, the airline said.
A police source said: "A 30-year-old Spaniard has been arrested after two people were stabbed at Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas Airport. "The incident happened around 5.45am in Terminal 1 near the Ryanair check-in desks. "The man allegedly launched a surprise attack on a Mexican woman who was stabbed in the ear. "The other person who suffered knife wounds was a Romanian man who tried to help her. He was hurt when he attempted to grab the weapon from the attacker. "Armed officers had to aim their gun at the knifeman to get him to drop his weapon as he was holding it to the throat of the good Samaritan and threatening to hurt him." A spokesperson for Ryanair today added: "Yesterday, April 22nd, an individual was arrested after injuring several people in front of the checkin area of Madrid airport. "Ryanair cooperated fully with police authorities who are now investigating this matter. "This is a matter for the Spanish National Police." It is not known if the woman was waiting to fly on a Ryanair plane. It is also not known as yet if the victims were airport workers or tourists. The arrested man was handed over to a judge for further questioning.

Seagate Wealth Management
Keeping it local M
any people think that once they have signed on the dotted line for their pension transfer, savings plan or investment portfolio, that is the end of their relationship with their financial adviser. Nothing could be farther from the truth as far as we at Seagate are concerned. This is where the relationship starts. If you were one of the many thousands of people who took out an endowment mortgage in the eighties with a promise of the mortgage being paid off and a Porsche on the drive, only to discover twenty years’ later you were in fact not going to be able to clear the mortgage, then you will understand why investments of any type need to be nurtured. As a result of the lack of supervision and management, what looked a good investment to start with proved unsuitable over the long term. Independent financial advice is vital in all stages of managing your finances, but on‐going support and monitoring of the investments is the only way to ensure the results you are looking for can be achieved. Ideally, your financial adviser should be local to you, with an office complete with a team to support them, and in turn their clients. We believe our success is a result of two fundamental principles: the strength of the relationship between our advisers and their clients and our distinctive approach to investment advice. We offer regular review meetings in a professional environment to ensure you are kept up to date with how your pensions and or savings and investments are performing. This ensures you can work towards and achieve your financial goals, and of course the peace of mind that comes with being in control.
If your financial adviser does not offer this level of service, or you are thinking of transfer ring your pension or investing, then give us a call on 965 704 338 or email: Contact@SeagateWealth.es

Marie Kondo
The KonMari method is a system of simplifying and organising your home by getting rid of physical items that do not bring joy into your life. It was created by organising consultant Marie Kondo and described in detail in her best-selling book The LifeChanging Magic of Tidying Up. Marie Kondo’s life-changing approach has recently been captured in her new Netflix special which documents the organization-guru’s decluttering process with real families who are struggling to tidy up their homes. KonMari teaches you to ask a simple question when you go about tidying up your house. Of each item in your home ask, does it spark joy? If not, get rid of it.
The appeal of Marie Kondo’s KonMari method is that it can be applied to all of parts of your life. From using KonMari when folding your clothes to changing your perspective when it comes to your relationships! The first step in KonMari instructs you to physically hold or touch the items in your house as you attempt to clean up clutter and get more organised. Then ask yourself the following question: does it spark joy? Items that spark true joy won’t always be rational. Keeping personal possessions that only bring you joy (and getting rid of those that don’t) requires you to confront each of your tangible possessions earnestly and then forces you to
make a judgment on what kinds of things you do want to surround yourself with. 5 Tips for Using KonMari There are several tips you’ll need to undertake to successfully apply KonMari to your home. Follow these tips to get started! • Tidy all at once • Visualize the destination • Determine if the item “sparks joy” • Tidy by category, not location • Tidy In Order Remember: your only real concern should be discovering which possessions of yours bring actual joy into your life.

Welcome to Phuket
Phuket is one of the southern provinces of Thailand. It consists of the island of Phuket, the country's largest island, and another 32 smaller islands off its coast. It lies off the west coast of Thailand in the Andaman Sea. Phuket Province has an area of 576 square kilometres (222 sq mi), somewhat less than that of Singapore, and is the second-smallest province of Thailand. It formerly derived its wealth from tin and rubber, and enjoys a rich and colorful history.
Geography Phuket is the largest island in Thailand. The most popular (and overcrowded) tourist area on Phuket is Patong Beach on the central west coast, perhaps owing to the easy access to its wide and long beach. Most of Phuket's nightlife and its shopping is in Patong, and the area has become increasingly developed. Patong means "the forest filled with banana leaves" in Thai. South of Patong lie Karon Beach, Kata Beach, Kata Noi Beach, and around the southern tip of the island, Nai Han Beach and Rawai.
Climate Under the Köppen climate classification, Phuket features a tropical monsoon climate (Am). Due to its proximity to the equator, in the course of the year, there is little variation in temperatures. The city has an average annual high of 32 °C (90 °F) and an annual low of 25 °C (77 °F). Phuket has a dry season that runs from December through March and a wet season that covers the other eight months. However, like many cities that feature a tropical monsoon climate, Phuket sees some precipitation even during its dry season. Phuket averages roughly 2,200 millimetres (87 in) of rain.
Economy Since the 1980s, the sandy beaches on the west coast of the island have been developed as tourist destinations, with Patong, Karon, and Kata being the most popular. Since the 2004 tsunami, all damaged buildings and attractions have been restored. Phuket is being intensely developed, with many new hotels, apartments, and houses under construction. Phuket has 60,000 hotel rooms for its 9.1 million annual visitors
Attractions • Two Heroines Monument , is a monument in Amphoe Thalang, a memorial statue of the heroines Thao Thep Kasattri (Kunying Jan) and Thao Sri Sunthon (Mook), who rallied islanders in 1785 to repel Burmese invaders. Hat Patong is Phuket's most developed beach and is 3 kilometres (1.9 mi)-long. It is 15 km from Phuket town. Patong is mostly made up of hotels, restaurants, nightclubs and various tourist attractions. Daytime activities are primarily centered on the beach with watersport activities. Patong is equally well known for its nightlife, centered on Soi Bangla. The northern end of Patong Bay is called Kalim and is a popular place for viewing the sunset and for surfing between April and September each year. • Hat Karon is the second largest of Phuket's tourist beaches, approximately 20 kilometres (12 mi) from town. Large resort complexes line the road behind the shoreline, but the broad beach itself has no development. The southern point has a coral reef stretching toward Kata and Poo Island. There is also its sister beach, Karon Noi. • Kamala Beach, Hat Kamala is a large beach approximately 16 km (10 mi) north of Patong Beach. The beach is undeveloped with coral reefs on the north side and surfing in the low season. • Wat Chalong is where stands the cast statue of Luang Pho Cham, who helped the people of Phuket put down the Angyee, or Chinese Coolie Rebellion, in 1876 during the reign of Rama V. There are also statues of Luang Pho Chuang, and Luang Pho Cham, abbots of the temple during later times. • Phuket Pearl Farm located about one kilometer offshore from Phuket's east coast close to coconut island. Phuket Pearl Farm can be accessed only by boat. • The Big Buddha of Phuket, is on the peak of a mountain near Muang Phuket, or Phuket town . The image is 45 m in height and covered in white Burmese marble. • Old Phuket Town in Phuket town, around Thalang, Dibuk, Yaowarat, Phang Nga, and Krabi Roads. The architecture is Sino-Portuguesestyle.

I want us to move in together
Having opinions
I want to settle down and get a flat with my girlfriend, but she still wants the single life and to go out with her friends. She lives with her mum and dad and her parents pay for everything. She doesn’t even have to pay keep. She is more interested in getting her nails done than talking with me about our future.
I am 14 and have trouble keeping friends. When I message my ‘former’ friends, why they don’t want to be with me, some have said it’s because I am bossy and try to tell people what to do, or tell them they are wrong about things when I have an opinion. I just seem to get up their noses. This is just the way I am, but I end up with no one wanting to bother with me.
It seems your girlfriend has quite a good life at home. Perhaps she is not yet mature enough to settle down. At your age a person should at least have had a job, and be thinking about striking out on their own in life. If this is not the future you imagined, then you’ve got some thinking to do. If you force her to live a life she’s not yet ready for she will resent you for it and trouble will soon start. You both are clearly not on the same page here. Time to have a serious conversation, and if she won’t budge you might want to think about having some time apart to see how you both feel.
Making and keeping friends at your age is not always plain sailing. Most youngsters go through life chopping and changing their circle of friends, it’s quite normal. However there are some things you can do to help things run more smoothly. Although having opinions isn’t always the same as being opinionated, you might want to keep in mind that people generally don’t want their opinions picked apart. Try to accept that everyone has their own view on life, and try not to comment. How would you feel if someone said to you that YOU were wrong? It’s all about diplomacy really.

F
rom the entrance of your home to the inside, you need to create the best first impression you can, when preparing your home for sale. So here are 7 tips to pay extra attention to: 1. If your home has a driveway in front of the home, be certain that it is clear of clutter, clean and any cracks are filled - If you have a carport, and it's looking dirty, use a pressure washer to freshen the look. 2. Pay extra attention to flooring, lighting, and walls Consider adding centerpiece plants or flowers to enhance dull entryway tables and eliminate other clutter than often gravitates to flat surface. 3. Make it smell like home - The scent that meets prospective buyers should be pleasant and not
overwhelming. 4. Remove toys and anything else that doesn't belong - A tidy home is a welcoming home. On the other hand, a cluttered home gives the impression that there is a lack of storage and unusable space. 5. Remove all unnecessary furniture to maximize space - Or simply rearrange the furniture to provide a smooth flowing walkway through he room. 6. Repair or replace appliances that are not working or are barely holding on - Everything should work as intended. Buyers (and their agents) pay a lot of attention to detail in kitchens. Any repairs or replacement cost they foresee, multiplies far beyond actual cost because of the added inconvenience to them. 7. Check your curb appeal - Stand across the street from your home and look at the exterior and the garden as if you were planning the buy your home. Buyers will notice smaller details than the homeowner, so use a critical eye or borrow a friend who will be honest with you. The best piece of advice I can give you is to use your common sense! Try to look at your own home, as if you were the buyer. Look from the floor to the ceiling, and don’t forget to check for cobwebs! Buyers see everything! You’re only looking for one buyer, so make every viewing appointment count!

Strictly judge reveals who he wants to replace Bussell Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood has revealed who he is backing to replace Darcey Bussell on the panel. The ballet icon announced that she would be stepping down from the series earlier this month, which has led to intense speculation about who will take over. Well, Craig has given his two cents on the matter, suggesting that former X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger would be among his top picks. ‘She’d be fabulous,’ he told
Australia’s TV Week. ‘And Anton du Beke definitely wants to do it. I’d love to see Nicole, or Carlos (Acosta). ‘But nobody has actually expressed anything to me. And I’m generally the last to find out!’ Craig also admitted he has no say in the matter, adding: ‘No, of course not! But it doesn’t matter if I don’t get on with them. ‘The difference of opinion is rather good, generally. For me it’s of no concern. I just hope they choose the right person and they
know what they’re talking about.' He isn’t the only one backing Scherzy for the gig, with former professional Kristina Rihanoff saying last week that she would love to see the Pussycat Dolls star in the role. ‘She is a beautiful stunning lady who has training in street and commercial dancing,’ she said. ‘She would be a good judge.’ Strictly Come Dancing returns later this year on BBC One.
Williams exit good for X-Factor Simon Cowell has spoken out about Robbie Williams and Ayda Field’s decision to leave X Factor, admitting he thinks it might actually be for the best. Speaking to press about the husband-and-wife duo’s exit, Simon said he thinks the show could be better off without them, as he hopes to take attention away from the judging panel for future series. He explained: “It was no secret (Robbie and Ayda wanted) millions and millions of pounds. I am going to be really honest with you - and this is no disrespect to Robbie or anyone else who has been on the panel - my focus this year is mainly about the people who are coming on the show to compete.
I’m probably talking myself out of a job here, but I think there has been so much emphasis on the judges. We’ve lost sight of the contestants.” He continued: “It got crazy, I never thought this would happen 20 years ago, when I started this show, that we would be talking more about the judges than the contestants, it’s complete nonsense. Somehow that’s the way it’s gone.” Simon will be involved in not one, but two series of The X Factor this year. A regular series will not be airing but its place there will be a celebrity edition and an all-star version which will see former contestants returning to compete
for a second turn. Simon can now put those “millions and millions of pounds” to good use by roping in big names as contestants, rather than judges. It remains to be seen whether former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson will be returning to X Factor, having joined the panel this year.

SIMON COWELL GOES VEGAN Simon Cowell has gone vegan ahead of his 60th birthday. The music mogul reaches the milestone birthday in October and he has cut out meat, dairy, wheat and sugar from his diet in a bid to change his lifestyle after a horror fall last year. He said: “A friend of mine, who is a doctor, recommended speaking to an expert and I did it on a whim. I was allergic to melon, so I didn’t eat it for six
months, but I saw this man and he explained it and it made sense. Within 24 hours I changed my diet and I’ve not looked back since. You feel better, you look better. I cut out a lot of the stuff I shouldn’t have been eating and that was primarily meat, dairy, wheat, sugar - those were the four main things.” And the 59-year-old television personality admits it was way easier than he thought it would be.
He added: “It was way easier than you may think. Like, I used to have yoghurt in the morning and I changed it to almondmilk yoghurts. I have almond milk in my tea. I can eat certain fruits but not all fruits. You have to be careful because some fruit can have more sugar than a can of Coke. Once you get into a pattern I’ve found it quite enjoyable. It has helped me sleep and I wake up feeling less tired. I noticed a massive difference in how I felt in about
a week. I have more energy and focus and it wasn’t difficult. I don’t like to use the word diet because that’s the reason I never went on a diet before - the word diet makes me miserable.” Simon has also been getting the support of his girlfriend Lauren Silverman and she is slowly moving over to share his food habits. He said: “Yeah, she got it. If I’m sitting there and I’ve got a bowl of vegetables in front of me, she’s not going to sit there and eat a pizza in front of me. That would be cruel. She’s kind of gone the same way as me.”

Essential sauces every cook should know A well-crafted sauce can bring any dish together. It can add a luxurious creaminess, bright acidity, or even a bit of crunch and texture. Hollandaise Hollandaise is the only classic mother sauce that’s thickened using emulsification instead of a roux. Traditionally, this sauce is made by setting a heatproof bowl or saucepan over a pan of gently simmering water (also known as the double boiler method). In the bowl, you whisk egg yolks with something acidic like lemon juice and then slowly stream in melted butter. The gently simmering water cooks the egg yolks and the butter gives you a thick, velvety texture. While this seems easy enough, far too often the egg yolks overcook and the sauce curdles. Luckily there is a foolproof approach to hollandaise. The secret? A blender. Instead of using the heat from a double boiler to cook the yolks. Puree the egg yolks in a blender and then stream in hot melted butter, thickening and cooking the hollandaise. Spoon this unctuous sauce over eggs benedict, steamed vegetables or use as a dip for a seared steak.
Pomodoro Sauce Pomodoro is a beyond-easy tomato sauce. As compared to the quick-cooking, chunkier marinara sauce, pomodoro uses crushed tomatoes and simmers until it is thick and a deep rich red. Seasoned with a bit of olive oil, garlic and salt, this sauce can be used as is for a simple pasta or on chicken parmigiana. You can also doctor it up with chopped capers and anchovies, or fresh basil and crushed red pepper. When making pomodoro, a wide sauté pan or skillet with low sides is ideal. This helps the moisture evaporate and the pomodoro thicken, plus the extra space makes it easy to toss your pasta straight into the sauce. Béchamel Béchamel is a classic for a reason. While this sauce doesn’t have much flavour on its own, it is the base for many dishes. It begins with a roux, a thickener made by whisking melted butter with flour. You want your roux to smell toasty and look like sand – anything darker will discolour your white béchamel. Then, slowly whisk in milk and simmer until the sauce is thickened. Season with salt and pepper and add a touch of freshly grated nutmeg, if you like. Layer this sauce in a lasagne, smear it on a croque madame, or add cheese and it becomes a mornay sauce for mac-andcheese. It’s incredibly versatile. The only equipment you need to make this sauce is a saucepan and a good whisk. You want to use a heavy-bottomed pot to prevent any scorching while your sauce is cooking.

Are avocados useful for weight loss?
The myth that dietary fat is actually evil has finally been debunked, and that means healthy fats like avocados have gone decidedly mainstream. In fact, the green fruit is an essential part of whole foodsbased diets, including the Mediterranean diet and keto diet, in part because healthy fats help keep you fuller longer. But is it possible to have too much of a good thing and actually sabotage your weight-loss goals with this otherwise healthy food? “Make no mistake about it, avocados are one of the most complete foods you can eat,” said Kris Sollid, RD, senior director of nutrition communications at the International Food Informational Council Foundation. “But, even though avocados are packed with nutrients, they do have more calories than most other fruits and vegetables.” By the numbers, one serving is equal to about a third of an avocado and contains around 76 calories. If you consume half an avocado, you’re looking at about 114 calories, and if you go for a full avocado, roughly 227 calories.
Even though avocados are more calorie-dense than other fresh produce, and being mindful about avocado portions is important, “eating more calories than your body needs is what causes weight gain, regardless of the foods those calories come from,” Kris said. Keeping your avocado habit in check is as easy as finding healthy ways to incorporate them into your diet, while making sure the portion sizes fit into your overall dietary goals. This is true for other sources of unsaturated fat as well, including seafood, walnuts, flaxseed, and canola and soybean oils, Kris explained. “The type of fat you eat matters more than the amount.” So, “use avocados in omelettes for breakfast, on sandwiches for lunch, mash them into guac for a healthy snack, or pair them with seafood (they’re especially good with crab cakes and tuna) for dinner,” Kris suggested. At the end of the day, as long as you’re mindful of your portions, eating avocados will probably help you shed a few pounds rather than gain them.

Clever tricks for cooks
Let’s get spicy! When your schedule allows for extra free time, you may feel inclined to crack open one of your favourite recipe books that you rarely get to thumb through to prepare a nice meal. Aside from a trip to the grocery store, you may also take inventory on which spices you already have. As you rummage through the small jars of coriander, rosemary, and Bay leaf, do you ever stop and try to recollect when it was you first bought that dried spice? If you’re not ardent about cooking, it’s easy to believe that your spice supply could be a couple of years old. The question is, do spices go bad— and do they have to be replaced? So when is it time to toss out that stash of ground cinnamon or dried parsley.
How long do spices typically last in your cabinet? “Spices in my cabinet usually only last about three months,” says an expert who admits to buying spices in small quantities and in their whole form, never ground, except for chilli flakes and special curry spice blends such as Gram Masala and Vadouvan, for example. For a chef, it makes sense that they are mowing through spice jar after spice jar every couple of months, but for the person who doesn’t raid their spice cabinet every day, it’s more likely they’ve been holding onto that jar of ground sage for more than two years. If this is the case, Bennett suggests replacing that old spice. Try to hold on to any ground spices for more than a year as spices will not go rancid, but they will definitely become more stale and less potent over time. Who wants to sprinkle flavourless

turmeric atop a skillet full of vegetable stirfry? The purpose of spice is to quite literally spice up a dish that otherwise would be bland on its own, right? Buying whole spices such as cinnamon sticks, cardamom pods, and star anise have the potential to last longer. Whole spices should last for about two to four years, believe experts. Whole spices last longer because, contrary to ground, the inside of it has yet to be exposed to oxygen. Oxygen can essentially weaken the aroma and flavour of the ground spice over time, which is why it’s important to store spices in airtight containers, if not in the container it was originally purchased in.
HOW TO QUICKLY RIPEN AVOCADOS
HOW TO PEEL GINGER WITH A SPOON
If you have a hard avocado and you need it to be soft in a day or so, simply place it in a brown paper bag with a banana or apple and fold the top to close it up. The natural ethylene gases emitted by the other fruit will cause the avocado to ripen faster. Depending on how hard your avocado is, it might take a couple of days.
Ginger's skin is thin enough to be scraped off with the edge of a teaspoon. In fact, it's easier to use a spoon than a vegetable peeler because the spoon can get into the crevices and navigate over the bumps more easily. Also, this means you can have even a very little kid help with this kitchen task, since they can't nick themselves with a spoon.
HOW TO MINCE GARLIC SUPER FINE
HOW TO SOFTEN BROWN SUGAR
If you are using minced garlic in a dish, particularly a dish where the garlic is uncooked, big chunks are not what you are looking for. Just smash a clove or two (or five) with the side of a heavy knife, slip off the papery skin, and start chopping on a cutting board. As the garlic gets chopped, add a pinch or so of kosher or sea salt, and keep chopping. The salt acts as an abrasive so the garlic gets minced fine, finer, finest. Every once in a while, use the side of the knife to smear the garlic against the cutting board, then scrape it back up and keep mincing. You can hear the salt crunching under the blade as it works to pulverize the garlic.
If you have a day or two, just place a piece of fresh bread in a container with the brown sugar, seal the container, and your brown sugar will soften right up. If you are in a hurry, place the brown sugar in a bowl, place a damp paper towel over it, cover the bowl with a plate and microwave it for 20 seconds. Check to see if it's soft, and if not, continue microwaving in 20 second bursts until it is. Use it pretty quickly, and when you store any leftovers, make sure to put a piece of fresh bread in the container with the sugar
What’s the best way to get the most out of your spices? Always toast your whole spices to get the most amount of flavour and help extract some of the oils. Chefs recommend purchasing a cheap coffee bean grinder to grind whole spices. In addition to storing ground spices and dried herbs into airtight containers, it’s also important to store them away from the stove and from direct sunlight. Don’t keep spices in the fridge either, as the humidity could be detrimental to the longevity of the spice. There’s also the risk of the spice absorbing surrounding odours in the fridge. So, while your spices won’t necessarily go bad or become inedible, they do lose their potency after some time, so it’s important to not hold onto ground spices for more than a year, while whole spices should be replaced every two to four years. If you’re looking to whip up some
delicious recipes, we suggest you head to the store and re-stock your spice cabinet. If you’re looking to whip up some delicious recipes, we suggest you head to the store and re-stock your spice cabinet.

Homegrown British sparkling wine sales soar
British wine drinkers sank a record 4m bottles of English and Welsh sparkling wine last year – up 6 percent on 2017 and making homegrown fizz more popular than sparkling wines from Australia, the US and Germany combined. New figures from the Wine and Spirits Trade Association show that while demand for sparkling wine is still growing in the UK, it is being driven primarily by cheaper fizz – notably Italian Prosecco, which remains the bestselling bubbly. British shoppers bought 117m bottles in 2018, compared with fewer than 24m bottles of champagne. The UK’s third favourite sparkling wine is Spanish, predominantly Cava, with sales of more than 23m bottles, and there were sales of more than 5m bottles from the rest of France (crémant rather than champagne). UK-produced fizz is the fifth most popular. “Everyone should take the opportunity to toast our talented English winemakers with a glass of
Supermarket meat ‘fit to eat’ after 50 days, study finds
Supermarket meat is fit to eat after up to 50 days on the shelf, scientific research has found, as sell-by dates could soon be relaxed. Advances in food packaging means beef can stay fresh and safe for consumption for up to seven weeks, a report by the British Meat Processors Association found, as long as it is chilled at 8 degrees C or below. Lamb can last 35 days while pork can last 25 days, it found. This is despite official food safety regulations currently stating that meat must not have a sell-by date more than more than 10 days from the point of manufacture, unless the producer has sought special permission. It means thousands of tonnes of meat may be needlessly being thrown in the bin because consumers are being wrongly told it is unsafe to eat. Sell-by dates signal when food is no longer safe to eat, unlike best before dates which indicate food quality. Meat which is past its sell by
date may cause food poisoning if eaten, even if it smells and looks fit to eat. However the rules could soon change as sell-by dates on meat are now set to be reviewed by the Food Standards Agency, it said. A Food Standards Agency spokesman said: “When relevant new science is generated it is standard practice to revisit the evidence base and we will now consider the findings of this report.” The British Meat Processors Association, which commissioned scientists at Camden BRI to do the research, is hoping that the FSA will relax rules on meat sell-by dates, meaning they can be extended and less meat will be wasted. To last significantly longer than 10 days meat must be packaged in vacuum packed or air modified packaging, which dramatically slows down its degradation via spores carried in the air.
The FSA said its current guidance was developed using robust scientific evidence, drawing on the expertise of the independent Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food. It comes after a number of supermarkets have dropped “best before” dates from packs over fears they were driving unnecessary amounts of food waste. This leaves consumers to do common sense checks on food such as bread and fruit and vegetables to decide whether it should be eaten. David Lindars, a BMPA director who conducted the research, said: “The shelf life of fresh red meat held at 3°C and 8°C is of great significance to the industry. “These new scientific findings will give meat processors the ammunition they need to apply longer retail shelf-lives to their products. “It is not just the commercial benefit to producers, processors and retailers that will result from these findings. “Longer shelf lives of products will also benefit consumers and the environment through lower wastage and better sustainability.”
homegrown fizz” said Miles Beale, chief executive of the Wine and Spirit Trade Association (WSTA). “UK wine trade has come out fighting and proved it can compete with the best of the best at a global level.” He added: “The government needs to do more to support this emerging British success story”, and urged the chancellor Philip Hammond to “start bringing down his excessively high duty rates after he unfairly singled out wine for a duty rise in his last budget”. Wine importers, bottling plants, distributors, retailers and logistics companies across the UK employ about 170,000 people, according to the WSTA, and in 2017 paid almost £4.7bn in duty to the Treasury, more than is paid for any other alcoholic drink. Despite the WSTA’s complaints about the duty burden, the English wine industry has enjoyed huge growth in recent years, with
3.86m bottles released on to the market in 2017, up 64% on the previous year and nearly three times the 1.34m recorded in 2000. English winemakers were now looking forward to even bigger sales in the next couple of years, the WSTA said, when wine made from grapes grown in the sweltering summer heatwave of 2018 will arrive on supermarket shelves. The fall in sterling has also handed a Brexit bonus to English sparkling wines, with many considered to match premium French champagnes in quality but now priced the same or less. English sparkling wine is made in the same traditional method as champagne, meaning it is left to age in the bottle, typically for about three years. Sparkling (as opposed to still) wine accounts for 68 percent of all English and Welsh wine produced and has gained global recognition for its quality. In a major boost for producers, the Ridgeview estate in Sussex was last November named the world’s best winemaker in the International Wine & Spirit Competition 2018. This was the first time in the competition’s 49year history that the award has been presented to an English producer.

Warning to pet owners Volunteers at La Finca Castellana, San Miguel, want to warn pet owners about several cases of fatal animal poisonings in the area which have left pet lovers understandably concerned. It would appear that cooked potatoes are being filled with cheese and poison and left in areas which cats frequent and/or dogs are walked. If eaten by a cat or dog, the animal will immediately become very ill, with vomiting and dribbling (probably containing blood). If this happens the animal needs instant emergency veterinary treatment. Local vet Eduardo Nunez Gonzalez of Eduardo's Pets, El Galan, has informed
the local police and given a report concerning a dog, which luckily they managed to save from such a situation. Please beware and report anything suspicious to the police. On a happier note, Finca la Castellana animal welfare centre is currently celebrating ten years as a charity. To commemorate the occasion it is holding its very first dog show on Saturday 4th May. Registration opens at 11am with the fun beginning at 11.45am with a demonstration from the charities exRAF dog trainer Brian. There will then be ten fun classes, something for everyone, all marked by three guest judges...and if
you don't have a dog of your own, why not borrow one of the many rescued pooches! There is also a cake competition judged solely on taste and not appearance, a prize for the winner and then all cakes will be sold to help raise money for our charity. Throughout the day there will be a BBQ, refreshments, tombolas, hook a duck, and count the spots on our rescue Dalmatian Freckles. For more information or to reserve a rescue dog for the show, please contact Beccie on 603251004, or check out our Facebook page, Finca la Castellana.

Embroidery tattoos Sure, tiny tattoos might be totally delicate and delightful, but sometimes we're after some ink with a little more impact. Taking the love for all things arts and crafts and tattoos to the next level is Instagram's new obsession - embroidery tattoos. A little mind-blowing at first, embroidery tattoos create the illusion of a three dimensional image, as if you've
had a craft patch sewn straight onto your skin. The result? Seriously pretty floral tattoos created using a hyper-real technique that inks each individual stitch to create a thread effect. Equal parts nostalgic and unique, consider this the personalised denim jacket of the tattoo world. Turning your body into a tapestry just got way more literal.
Bieber Beauty about to launch The beauty industry just keeps getting bigger thanks to those celebrities. Last week brought the news that Ariana Grande is planning to release a beauty line called 'Thank U, Next' and Rihanna is expanding Fenty Beauty to skincare. Now, Hailey Bieber nĂŠe Baldwin has filed paperwork to release a line of cosmetics and skincare products under the brand name Bieber Beauty. Her husband is Justin Bieber, after all. Amercian mag TMZ was first to report that Hailey Bieber filed a trademark for Bieber Beauty last week, which covers everything from cosmetics, perfumes, and hair products. The newlywed adopted Bieber's last name right after their wedding, and has also filed a trademark of her new last name. 'It took some getting used to, for sure,' Baldwin told Bustle of her new last name. 'It's definitely strange, it takes adjusting.' The couple got married last fall in a private ceremony in New York City, and is reportedly planning another wedding ceremony in the near future.

Tech Fact Mary via email asks: Hello Aunty. My 18 month old HP laptop always had a flashing green light on the front which is by what looks like a battery symbol. It is now a solid orange colour light and I get a message everytime I turn the laptop on that no battery is detected. I can only use it if it is plugged in to the mains adapter which is ok most of the time but occasionally I would like to use it outside and I am a bit worried about the amount of power cuts we have as the battery used to kick in. How easy (and expensive) is it to replace the battery and will I need to send it back to Ireland to have it done? You advice would be most welcome. Aunty Says: Hi Mary. It does sound like you are due a new battery and 18 months does seem a bit of a short life, but as most stuff is thrown together in China these days I’m not too surprised. You can probably find a decent replacement battery on ebay
or Amazon for around €40 but fitting it may be a bit fiddly as new laptops have the battery buried inside. Give Phil at eNET Computers a call on 687362844 as he will know the best solution. Ben via email asks: Hi Aunty. I recently purchased a new Canon printer but now after I scan a document and saving it to my desktop onto the laptop I get a message appear when I try to attach it to an email that says “the attachment is too big”. I didn’t get this with my old HP printer using exactly the same procedure. Aunty Says: Hi Ben. I think your new printer/scanner is scanning your documents at a too high resolution. You can lower the resolution (sometimes known as DPI) before you start the scan. I find 150dpi is plenty enough & if it’s a simple document I also set it to black & white which will help to reduce the size.
DID YOU KNOW? Fred via email asks: Can you advice me on good safe site for downloading movies and DVDs? If not, is there any of your readers that can? Aunty Says: Hi Fred. There are loads of ‘torrent’ sites out there but you access and download from them at you own risk. The legality of downloading copyrighted films and music is as about as complicates as it gets, so make sure you read up on the rules before you begin. The Pirate Bay and isohunt still seem to be very popular websites to find downloads and you’ll need a downloader program such as Utorrent or Bitcomet to manage the files. Make sure your antivirus program is up to date and scan for spyware at least once a week as it can get a bit scary out there. Email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and I will see you all next week
Changing fonts can save printer ink That's right, fonts are not created equal. People create different kinds of fonts for all kinds of reasons: to convey a message, for decoration, embellishment or as iconography. The theory is, if you use a 'lighter'
font (with a lighter stroke), you'll use slightly less ink per page. Based on the assumption that you're only printing with inkjet printers that use the old style cartridges (not ink tanks, and not tonerbased laser printers), you'll likely save about 10 per cent ink by switching to one of the lighter fonts.

Advice from Quironsalud Two out of every ten Traffic Accidents have Consequences on the Spinal Column due to Cervical Whiplash, Says Quiron. This type of lesion presents symptoms such as neck pain, headaches, dizziness and tingling in the hands. In Spain, there are approximately 150,000 people injured a year in traffic accidents. Though traffic accident lesions can be multiple, and vary greatly, 20 percent of these tend to have consequences on the spinal column due to cervical whiplash, followed by dorsal and lumbar lesions, we are told by the specialists in Quirónsalud Hospitals’ Traffic Units. Whiplash is caused by the mechanism of a sharp hypertension of the neck, followed by an also sudden flexion of the same, or vice versa. “The extremely violent tensile mechanism to which the head and neck are submitted creates maximum tensions, and can even injure the muscles and ligaments of the neck, which are unable to resist this sharp stretching force, causing what is known as cervical sprain,” explains Doctor Carlos Puell, Specialist in the Rehabilitation Service and Specialist in the Traffic Unit at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja. As for the symptoms of this type of lesion, Doctor Mayte Resta, Head of the Accident and Emergency Service and Specialist in the Traffic Unit at Hospital Quirónsalud Valencia, highlights dorsalcervical pain, occipitofrontal headaches
(like an oppressive crown), limited cervical mobility, in rotation as well as a feeling of not being able to support the weight of the head, dizziness and tingling in the hands. Likewise, she adds that “the fact of experiencing a traffic accident causes a psychological impact that can produce another series of symptoms related to stressful situations, such as anxiety or refusal to ride in or drive a vehicle again.” Traffic accidents, due to acceleration and deceleration forces, can cause acute injuries or complicate pre-existing lesions. Early assessment and implementation of treatment is essential to minimise physical sequela. According to Doctor Diego Gómez, Specialist in the Traffic Unit and Rehabilitation Physician at Quirónsalud Murcia, “from the medical perspective, it is crucial for any patient involved in a traffic accident to come in for an urgent medical assessment, whatever the severity his or her lesions present.” The recovery period for this type of lesion can go from two months to a much longer, harder to determine period. Their treatment is based on a combination of analgesics and antiinflammatories, together with rehabilitation therapy, such as ultrasound, currents, neck exercises and posture hygiene norms. “But despite having undergone adequate treatment, sometimes, and for multiple reasons, cervical sprains do not heal, and can have several repercussions, such as
cervical pain, dizziness and headaches. Any lesion, no matter how mild, runs the risk of becoming a permanent problem in time if it is not treated adequately and by the right team of professionals,” points out Doctor Puell. Tips for Safe Driving The specialists from Quirónsalud Traffic Units advise following these recommendations before any automobile trip to ensure safe driving: • Rest: Do not start a trip if you are not properly rested. Likewise, we recommend taking a break every hour and a half, to stretch. Stop at the first sign of tiredness. • Choose light meals, and do not consume any alcoholic beverages, even those with low alcoholic grade. • Sit in a correct position at the wheel: your legs must be slightly bent, and the back adjusted so that your wrists reach the upper part of the steering wheel. • Dress in loose, comfortable clothing, and wear adequate shoes. Quirónsalud is the most important hospital group in Spain and, together with its Fresenius-Helios headquarters, also in Europe. It has over 40,000 professionals working in over 120 healthcare centres, which include 47 hospitals offering close to 7,000 hospital beds. It boasts cutting-edge technology and a great team of highly specialised professionals with international prestige.

Brake Check! It is a good idea to check your brakes periodically too, at low speed on a road which is wide and with no traffic or pedestrians, and dry and free of obstacles, where you can try the brakes by applying various different pressures, including an emergency stop, such as was done in your driving test. Listen and watch for anything unusual, such as some of the things we will explain, but if anything doesn´t seem right, trust your instinct and get them checked immediately. It is also extremely important to check your brakes before driving anywhere after a heavy rainfall like the storms we experienced over Easter. Water is an enemy of the braking systems as it can get into the hydraulic systems and can reduce the friction needed for the brakes to be efficient. It can also cause decay to some of the parts of the system. Similarly, if you are driving and you drive through a body of water, such as a ford or some of the deep puddles like we had during the rains, check your brakes straight away, but this time applying them gently to avoid and sudden movements that can cause skidding or locking of the wheels. Modern vehicles are fitted with all kinds of intelligent systems, including things like ABS, or Anti-Locking Braking systems, for example, but we mustn´t rely too much on the technology and must maintain some responsibility of awareness ourselves, after all, we are the drivers. The general brakes on a car are composed of two different systems, disk and drum brakes. Although we don´t need to know the exact science behind these systems, we know that this is the
case because we know that there are the brakes that we operate with our foot pedal, and the hand-operated or parking brake. Principally however, although the systems are very different, the principle is similar in that they both work by pressure and friction reducing momentum. Don´t worry if science wasn´t your top subject at school, that´s as complicated as we´re going to get. Some vehicles do provide warnings on the dashboard if the onboard computers defect a fault with the system, and if this happens, it is crucial you seek help from a qualified mechanic immediately. We can also use our senses to detect brake problems too, which is also as important as the computerised warnings. A few things we can look out for include listening when we apply the footbrake. Do you hear anything unusual like a grinding or clattering sound for example? Does the vehicle pull to one side or the other when you apply the brake, even just slightly? Is there an unusual smell when you apply the brakes? These are just a few issues that might suggest a problem with the braking system and must be checked immediately. Similarly, have you noticed a reduction in the efficiency of the brakes? This is one of the most difficult to detect though as the wear is normally gradual, a bit like when your eyesight starts to fail, it´s not usually noticeable until you go to the opticians and they put a pair of spectacles on you. When you apply the handbrake or parking brake, does it apply firmly and keep the vehicle secure from moving? Is it difficult to apply, or release? These issues could indicate a problem with the
parking brakes. Finally, whilst we are on the braking system, it is also a good idea to check the brake lights are working properly. As we mentioned previously, when checking the vehicle´s lights it is a good idea to have somebody assist you, so that one person can operate the controls and the other observe. The brake lights are a crucial warning system for other road users as they indicate that you are slowing down or stopping. Without them, a collision to the rear of the vehicle is increased. Check all the brake lights are working, and if not, get them fixed straight away. The braking system also forms part of the mandatory ITV test, and so by keeping a check on your brakes and keeping them in optimum operating order not only keeps you safer, it also increases the likelihood of your vehicle passing the test.
ECO Stickers Mandatory in Madrid From Wednesday, April 24, it is mandatory for vehicles wishing to travel through Madrid to display the ECO sticker in the windscreen. The ECO Badge was introduced to highlight the impact vehicle pollutants have on the environment, and to encourage the purchase of less environmentally damaging vehicles. Cities like Madrid, Barcelona and Seville had implemented protocols to restrict access to certain areas at times, but the new ruling makes it mandatory to display the sticker on vehicles travelling through the country´s capital, or face a fine of up to 100 euro. The “Municipal Sustainable Mobility Ordinance” was announced six months ago and comes into force on Wednesday, and applies to all vehicles whether they belong to residents of Madrid or elsewhere. All vehicles are grouped into categories to enable the issue of the sticker, ranging from the least polluting to the worst: “Zero Emissions” - Blue sticker: electric cars and plug-in hybrids. “ECO” - Green and blue sticker: nonpluggable hybrids. “C” - Green sticker: cars and gas vans registered after 2006, and diesel vehicles registered from 2014. “B” - Yellow sticker: Petrol fuelled vehicles registered after 2000 but before 2006, and diesel vehicles 2006 to 2014. At the end of 2017, when the most recent study of the vehicle fleet was conducted, there were 1.8 million vehicles without any environmental distinction (the most polluting and limited). Then majority of vehicles had distinction “B” (11.3 million), 6.9 million were labelled as “C” while only 174,563 were classed as “ECO”, and 30,446 “Zero Emissions”. The local government of Madrid has been concerned over the environmental impact vehicle pollutants has been having, devising various plans before the implementation of the ECO stickers, which has now made it easier to control access. Although outside Madrid displaying the sticker is not mandatory, it is advisable to obtain one, as it is expected that various other locations will start to follow suit. The stickers can be obtained from main post offices, and can be ordered online from the Correos website, correos.es.

Imanyo Golf Society This is the fourth year the Denise Tyrrell Memorial Plaque has been played for, sadly Denise passed away in 2015, she was co-owner of Baybrooks Restaurant in Algorfa and we thank Baybrooks for sponsoring the plaque and the day’s golf in her memory. The day started with the usual full English breakfast at Imanyo’s. We had just suffered four days of torrential rain causing floods and damage all around the area, it only stopped two days before our competition so we thought the course would be water logged and bunkers washed out etc. well we really have to compliment the ground staff at El Plantio as we have never played this course in such great condition from the tee boxes to the greens, absolutely fantastic, even all the bunkers were perfect...well done. The format was foursome’s doubles full handicap Stableford both scores added together. Winners of the “Denise Tyrrell Memorial Plaque” were “Happy Hacker” Alan Martin and “Watching Your Handicap” Alan Freelove with 74 points, runners up on count back were Steve Day and Tom Goulden with 68 points, nearest the pins winners were hole 7 “The Wine Collector”
Brian Court, hole 9 Donald Main, hole 14 “Happy Hacker” Alan Martin and hole 18 “The Joker” Mick Billins. Best front 9 went to Alan Freelove with an incredible 25 points and best back 9 went to Tom Goulden, also with an incredible score of 23 points. Back at Imanyo’s there was food and a
few drinks waiting, the football card was won by John Mcmillan with Rangers adding another €40 for our chosen charities for 2019. Picture shows Jane Day presenting the plaque on Baybrooks behalf to Alan Freelove and Alan Martin. www.imanyogolfsociety.com

The Plaza Golf Society What a disappointing end to the season for The Plaza Golf Society with a complete washout at Vistabella having had 63 players booked on for Captains Day!! It was all set for a thrilling finish to the Order of Merit with several permutations to determine the top 8 places.Unfortunately the weather intervened and we went ahead with with the end of season presentation based on results to date. This was held at our home base The Ale House where we were brilliantly looked after by Carl, Lisa and their staff who have been great all season. The following players took places 3rd to 8th:3. ‘Big’ Tony Smale 183pts 4. Phil ‘Sulky’ Sully 171 pts 5. ‘Dodgy’ Declan Crowley 170 pts 6 .Liz ‘Captain of Vice’ Sully 169 pts 7. Barry ‘the loudest golfer in the club)’Mitchell 152 pts 8. ‘Ronaldo’ Temple 146 pts This left the two top spots and after the
whole season we ended up with two players tied on 190 pts so The Order of Merit was shared and the names of Warren ‘Wazza’ Harris and Young Callum Hitcham will be added to the coveted Plaza Golf Society Shield....Well Done Lads, Brilliant! The other competition ran this season was the Eclectic League which took place at Villamartin and was equally tightly contested. Tied in 3rd place were Alan Carter and Kevin Adamson on 53 pts, 2nd was Jimmy Gray on 54 pts but sneaking the prize with 55 pts was our Captano Richard Allen. Well done and thanks to all our Members and Guest who have made this a memorable season but it all starts again with the 1st game of the new season at La Torre so check out our website www.theplazagolfsociety.com to register. That just leaves me to wish you all a Happy Easter and when the rain decides to stop Happy Golfing !!!!

ABBEY ANGLING We fished the 7th round at the El Bosquet Complex A Section on the 23rd April, we had been due to fish the Embalsa de Argos but it was cancelled due to the recent heavy rain storms. The day started off quite nice, but the last hour of the match was dreadful as the heavens opened along with a gale force wind making the weigh in very difficult. Bill Reade managed to come out on top despite the weather with a top weight of 22.780kgs, closely followed by Terry Brindley with 21.400kgs for the second place, and in third spot was Dave Hutchinson with 14.040kgs 1st Bill Reade with 22.780kgs fishing the pole using pellet and bread 2nd Terry Brindley with 21.400kgs fishing the pole using paste 3rd Dave Hutchinson with 14.040kgs fishing the pole using pellet and bread There are still some vacancies available for membership at the club All details are available on our website www.abbeyangling.es or from me on 965328368
RODS & REELS
We also fished the El Bosquet Complex for our 3rd round of the Spring Championship on A Section on the 24th April It was a much improved day with the sun making a welcome return, but the wind was still causing problems. Coming in first place was Neil McBirnie with 26.250kgs, in the second spot was Tony Macmillan with a very nice 23.600kgs, and in third place was Terry Brindley with 18.440kgs 1st Neil McBirnie with 26.250kgs fishing the pole using pellet 2nd Tony Macmillan with 23.600kgs fishing the pole using pellet and bread 3rd Terry Brindley with 18.440kgs fishing the pole using paste There are still some vacancies at the Club and if anyone is interested in joining please contact Richard Wood on 611451423 There have been concerns that a Caza Pesca re fishing insurance is not available to any one over 80years of age. Due to the freak weather conditions over the weekend (and there I was basking in record temperatures back in the UK!) Friday’s Easter Egg competition was postponed until Monday. It took the form of a 2 ball better ball and winning with 44 points, were Nora Betts and John Drakesmith. Second place, with 43, were Joyce McClusky and Olga Douglas. However, the runners up would have been Ron Phipps and Mike Mahony had they remembered to actually hand in their scorecard! Nearest the pin on the 6th was Bryan Neal and nearest in two on the par four 15th was Donna Campbell. The finishing post is in sight now as on Wednesday we competed in round 5 (of 6) of our ‘Eclectic Joker Stableford’. Winner
on the day and just beating Mike Chapman on countback, with 42 points, was Benedicte Kruse. Another good result for John Drakesmith this week as he grabbed third place with 41 points. Five ‘2’s today (and making sure she remains at the top of the money list) Nora Betts was in there again. Phil Herrington, Lindsay Forbes, Andy McDonald and Terry Cullen made up the numbers. Our quote this week is from an unknown author who remarked ‘Golf is a lot of walking, broken up by disappointment and bad arithmetic’. No report for Friday again this week as the course is closed forcing a few of us to give Villamartin a visit.

Tales from the Top Flight ■ CHRIS DARWEN chris@costablancapeople.com
Dear reader, it’s a good thing Huddersfield made it difficult for Liverpool. Imagine if they’d just rolled over after less than a minute. We might still have a Premier League title race. This was also the weekend where Manchester City were supposed to slip up given their dislike of playing Burnley at Turf Moor. We’ll come on to that as well. With Tottenham, Arsenal and Chelsea playing as if they could do without Champions League football next season, could Manchester United actually finish in the top four after all? So many questions, so many questions. We start at Anfield where Jan Siewart sent his Huddersfield team out to have a go and play on the front foot against Liverpool. So, how did that work out, Jan? Liverpool put five past the Terriers, the first within the first 30 seconds. Liverpool don’t need someone to pull the strings in the middle of the park when the opposition midfielder can pick out a pass that early in a match. And with Sadio Mane on a oneman-mission to push Mohamed Salah to 25 goals this season, the result was never in doubt. Mane and Salah got a brace each as Mo stayed on his feet long enough to register the most goals ever by a Liverpool player in his first 100 games. I don’t have the exact number in front of me. You don’t expect that level of research, do you? Don’t forget, Salah is having a very average season despite
still being top of the goalscoring charts. And Mane is having an amazing season because he has as many goals as Salah. Well, both opinions cannot be right, can they? Liverpool went first and put the pressure back on City but City refused to blink. Their goal only went in by 27mm but, as they say, 27mm is as good as a mile when you are chasing a title. Yeah OK, nobody has ever said that but I am sure Peppy G agrees given the importance of those three points. Liverpool will have played another two matches before City step on to the field again against Leicester City, presumably fresh, relaxed and ready to stick a few past a team that are bound to come and play a bit of football at the Etihad. Sergio Aguero became just the second player to notch 20 Premier League goals for five seasons in a row and, incredibly, has still only one the Golden Boot once. Thierry Henry’s the other one, incidentally. And that’ll remind Arsenal fans once more that they used to be in these title races once upon a time. Tottenham were briefly in this Premier League chase too, if you recall. It was around Christmas time. It didn’t last very long, a bit like their unbeaten record in their new home. In the ‘New Stadium Derby’ West Ham turned up and beat the Poch’s men thanks to a goal from Michail Antonio. Antonio should be allowed to score more goals just so we can see what his next celebration is going to be. One week he is stroking a claret carpet and the next he is riding an imaginary horse. The weirdest thing is, West Ham showed that they can play quite well in a new stadium after all. Who would have thought it? David de Gea really does the most
imaginative ways to ask for a pay rise at Manchester United. According to sources, he is holding the club to ransom by refusing to save a shot until they agree to his new contract demands. I’m sure regular readers will agree that this stance might actually work considering he is negotiating with Ed Woodward, but ‘holding them’ to ransom? It’s about the only thing de Gea is holding on to at the moment. De Gea is thought to wanting to leave Old Trafford because he wants Champions League football next season. David, dear boy, if you stopped chucking them in United would be playing Champions League football next season. United looked good in the first half against Chelsea. It’s amazing what a bit of Ander Herrera can do and a switch back to the tactics that were actually
working for Solskjaer. The problem was, they weren’t very good after De Gea gifted Chelsea the equaliser. In the end, the point wasn’t that great for either team. Sarri has said before the game he needs ‘two more years’ to make Chelsea title challengers. Maurizio, mate. This is the Abramovich era (still, just about). No Chelsea manager gets two or three years to win the league, let alone
challenge for it. You are already a dead man walking. Imagine knowing that you only need two points from matches against Crystal Palace, Wolves and Leicester to remain in control of your top four destiny. Welcome to the world of Arsenal Football Club, folks. As I said at the start of the season, Unai Emery is a Europa League specialist and that is what Arsenal will be playing in next season. They were completely out-played by Brentan’s Leicester City side for whom Jamie Vardy scored for the ninth game in a row. Imagine if Arsenal had done something vaguely intelligent and tried to get Rodgers themselves last summer? Of course, the Gunners might have had their eye on Thursday’s Europa League semi-final, but still. They were terrible and can anyone honestly say the club has made any progress since Arsene retired? Southampton versus Bournemouth was never likely to be a low-scoring affair. Shane Long took a lot longer than in the midweek to open the scoring but managed to get his third goal in as many games; almost as many as he has scored in the last three seasons. It was a good day out for England manager Gareth Southgate, though. He got to see Callum Wilson score twice and James Ward-Prose once. Southampton are definitely staying up and (don’t hate me when this is proved wrong) will be a very decent side next season. Brighton scored their first goal in seven matches and it proved to be a point-grabber against Newcastle. It should have been all three except Glenn Murray headed over from close range. It probably won’t matter though, Cardiff lost again and remain four points behind with two matches remaining.
The Premier League will really, really miss Neil Warnock. Fulham’s 1-0 win over Cardiff was Scotty Parker’s third W in a row. Surely that is enough for him to get the gig next season? And if they’d given it to him earlier in the season, who knows what might have happened. He wouldn’t have been worse than Uncle Claudio. Fulham have even kept three clean sheets in a row now, something that was a tad unlikely after they shipped 200 in the first 20 games. Wolves did not have revenge on their minds against Watford, OK? They absolutely did not think about their gutting FA Cup semi-final defeat when deciding whether they were going to put in a shift or not on Saturday. Wolves won 2-1 but, you know, Watford are in the FA Cup Final so probably don’t care. It says here that Everton’s hopes of reaching Europe were dashed by their draw with Palace. Hopes of reaching Europe? This is the Everton side that lost 2-0 to Fulham, right? I think they need to set their sites a little lower, like following up a 4-0 win over United with anything other than a drab 0-0 away to a Palace team who are woeful at home a lot of the time. Congratulation to both Norwich City and Sheffield United whose reward for getting promoted to the Premier League next season is to feature in this column each week. That’s got to be worth more than the £190m they get nowadays, no? As for Leeds, they’ll have to make it via the playoffs but they also have the knowledge that in his first season in English football Marcelo Bielsa has put the wind up both Frank Lampard and John Terry. That folks, that is something we can all get behind.

After a bit of a sporting drought, we are back in full swing this week. We have some cricket, some tennis, some Formula One and the return of a former favourite of this column, Sir Mo Farah! If I was an England international cricketer heading into the biggest summer in English cricketing history knowing there was a chance I might play a significant part do you know what I wouldn’t do? Get caught taking recreational drugs (for a second time). Alex Hales is without doubt one of
in the last year. Is that just down to the fact that others got into the side and are refusing to be removed? Or is it down to the fact that Hales keeps finding himself in a bit of bother? After all, he was in and around the whole Ben Stokes palava last year and now this. The big question is how England should react. Should they can him from the World Cup squad and make an example of him? Or do they put their arm around him, accept that he is clearly a complex guy that might need some special treatment if they are to keep him in the right frame of mind to step in to the side at any point in a high pressure tournament? I don’t know what side of the fence
Alex Hales
the finest ODI batsmen in the world. On his day, he is a match winner with the class and ability to take matches away from the opposition at will with his range of hitting. His 170 odd a few years ago was the dawn of a new ODI era for England but he has found himself on the fringe of the side again
Ashley Giles sat on the whole Kevin Pieterson thing, but England’s new Director of Whatever it is has a big decision to make. And would you look at that? Sir Mo of Farah is back in the news and it almost smells of something brought to our attention to get people to watch the
London Marathon. Or so I thought, initially in a standard moment of sheer cynicism. There’s been a bit of public beef in the last week between Farah and a true athletics great Haile Gebrselassie. Farah has been staying in a hotel owned by Gebrselassie whilst training and decided to announce to the world last week that he was robbed whilst he was there - and Gebrselassie had done little to investigate. Farah announced all this in a press conference and then shared a text message he had sent to Gebrselassie which I will share with you now; “I want to inform you that I’m disappointed you have not made any effort to find my stolen money, and especially my watch. I have tried to contact you by telephone several times. Know that I am not responsible for what I say during the press conference in London and what influence it will have on your personality and your business. Greetings, Sir Mo.” Now, what I love about this is the way Farah immediately excuses himself from anything he might say to the world media and the fact that he signs the text message “Sir Mo”. I have always wondered whether knights of the realm referred to themselves as “sir” and settled on the fact that nice, humble ones would not and arrogant, egotisical idiots probably would. It is always nice to be proven right. Gebrselassie struck back, claiming that Farah had not paid his $3000 bill, had been investigated by police for assaulting a fellow guest and that his hotel had offered to reimburse him for any amount claimed to have been stolen. For me, it feels a little bit like Farah might have been striking the first blow to deflect us from other
news that might be about to come out. Oh look, there’s the cynical side of me again. Oh, Farah didn’t win the marathon. Just in case you cared. Sir Andy Murray (and you just know he doesn’t sign text messages as Sir Andy) is ‘pain free’ and ready to play tennis again. Murray announced this whilst firing the starting pistol in the London Marathon and managed to get through that ordeal without breaking down injured, so you never know. He might actually play at Wimbledon. It’s also the World Snooker
Number One over the best of nineteen, let’s add the true context. Yes, what James Cahill achieved was amazing. But, he isn’t a proper amateur as such. OK, he isn’t currently a snooker player with a pro card but he has been a professional player before and he has beaten two current World Number Ones in the past. So, you know, he can play a bit. But, it was pretty impressive all the same (until he crashed out in the next round in the deciding frame). Three time champions Mark Selby has also crashed out alongside current champion Mark Williams
Master winner Judd Trump
Championships at the moment and it has been a week of shocks. Firstly, favourite Ronnie O’Sullivan was knocked out by a rank amateur. No, an actual amateur - the first to qualify for the Crucible, none the less. Now, before you imagine Fat Gaz from the Dog and Duck just rocking up in Sheffield and beating the World
meaning the draw is wide open. Masters winner Judd Trump is now the people’s favourite but he might even be out by the time you read this. Valtteri Bottas drove his car faster than Lewis Hamilton drove his so ended up winning the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. I love F1, I do.
