Plans for 7490 new houses unblocked Building in La Hoya de Torrevieja area is to go ahead and will begin at Easter 2019, it has been announced. The area of land close to the International Auditorium has looked to be in limbo for a long time and now it is planned for 7,490 homes to be built there over the next couple of years.

The 1,800,000 square metres of land is the last large area of building land that is available in the town. There are some stipulations that go with it. The builders will be required to include an area of parkland

between the last row of houses and the La Mata natural park. This is expected to act as buffer, protecting the park from this additional residential area. The developer will also have to plough back â‚Ź450,000 into

in place and all environmental checks completed satisfactorily before the building of the houses themselves can go ahead.

The preparation for Habaneras continues

It’s getting closer and the preparations for the international Habaneras competition held in Torrevieja each year, are well under way. The popular competition will take place in the Eras de la Sal, the oldest part of Torrevieja.

The Eras de la Sal was where they used to store the salt before it was transported out to the boats and off to other countries like Cuba. So it is a fitting place in which to enjoy the choirs who come to visit the town each year.

It will be the 64th event of this kind and 12 groups are expected to attend and sing to the crowds until Saturday 28th July. Choirs are expected from the Philippines, Ukraine, China, Serbia, Rumania, Belarus, Mexico, Colombia, Spain, Indonesia and Macedonia.

There are two Spanish choirs taking part from Murcia and Asturias and on the final Saturday there will be a ceremony during which the prizes are presented.

As well as the singing, there are other events planned across the town for the duration of the competition. From Wednesday 25th July to Saturday 28th there will be a performance of the 7th International competition for technical vocals and interpretation in Torrevieja at the Palacio de la Música.

The special relationship between Cuba and Spain will also be recognised through a number of university conferences, films, food, a display of art, activities for children and, most importantly, through music.

However there are some new developments to this very traditional event this year. The whole of the competition will be available to watch on a mobile application. ‘It’s very important for Torrevieja,’ pointed out councillor Domingo Soler, ‘We want to use every method available to publicise it and make sure it has the widest distribution possible.’

The application is available to download free and is called ‘Habaneras Torrevieja’. There is also a new website which can now be accessed on a variety of devices. The website can be seen at www.habaneras.org and will be easier to update during the course of the competition. It will also be available in English.

Time, effort and cash is being put into promoting the event as much as possible.

Alicante province also recognises the importance of the habaneras competition for the town and has provided a subsidy of €300,000 to help with the advertising. This includes the printing of brochures and posters and providing comfort and security for those travelling to Torrevieja to take part.

The competition was first held in 1955 as a cultural and musical show to promote the tourist image of the city. Since the nineties there have been two categories including national and international and it has grown in stature over the years. Now it is recognised as a world reference for choral singing.

Delay in police reinforcements

The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, announced yesterday that the town hall has paralysed the project to make improvements to the Mar Azul area.

The blame was placed upon the restrictions that are imposed by the Economic and Financial Plan in the wake of austerity.

It was planned to redevelop the area but this will now have to be postponed.

There had been plans for the provincial government of Alicante to donate €450,000 and Torrevieja town council €1,515,865. A vast quantity of money that also had to be balanced against other current priorities.

‘It doesn’t mean that we don’t think it’s important or that it will not be done,’ explained the mayor. ‘There are many activities that have had to be cut or put on hold and this is one of them.’

With the busiest part of the year already upon us, Torrevieja town hall was hoping to have already appointed additional temporary police officers to help patrol the beaches. It was publicised that 20 interim police officers would be appointed and that they would start their shifts from June 25th.

However, it turns out that this has not been possible to set in motion yet and the new bobbies on the beat are not likely to

Playa del Cura facilities for the disabled The councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares, informed everyone at a press conference that seating has now been installed at the edge of the sea in Playa del Cura to enable people with mobility difficulties to enjoy the water in safety and in the shade.

The intention is to ensure that all those who want to use the town’s beaches are enabled to do so. ‘We want to make our beaches the most accessible possible,’ explained the councillor.

However, the process has been slower to begin than anticipated with the result that the jobs have only just been advertised and now applicants have eight days to submit their applications.

The criteria to apply includes being a

Currently the local police only have 165 personnel and always suffer from a number being ill or temporarily on leave.

Until the reinforcements can be appointed and out on the beaches, the town will struggle to ensure the security of its estimated 300,000 summer inhabitants.

Torrevieja carnival Torrevieja is to host its first ever carnival on 10th August in las Eras de la Sal. The carnival entitled ‘Ciudad de Torrevieja – Costa Blanca’ will include the winners from the Cádiz Carnival 2018.

Streets resurfaced The cobblestone pavement of Clemente Gosálvez is to be replaced as part of a major resurfacing project in Torrevieja.

Agreement was reached at the council meeting to resurface Rosa Mazón, Jacinto Marín Noarbe and Minerva and Clemente Gosálvez. The cobblestones on Clemente Gosálvez have been problematic since Caballero de Rodas and some streets nearby were redeveloped in 2010.

Sedesa was the company responsible for laying road surfaces in the first place and controversy continues over the exact arrangements made and the alleged failure to complete the work promised. The streets around the Plaza de Oriente have already had to be replaced because of the poor quality of the cobblestone.

St. Petersburg Ballet The St. Petersburg Ballet will be presenting Sleeping Beauty on Tuesday 7th August at the International Auditorium in Torrevieja. This is one of the most famous ballets of all time featuring the music of Tchaikovsky and the original choreography of Marius Petipa. The St. Petersburg Ballet is considered to be one of the oldest and most prestigious dance schools in the world.

Four years prison for sexual abuse Three men have now been found guilty of the sexual abuse of a girl in a car parked by a night club in Torrevieja. The crime took place in August 2008 when the victim met the men in the Barlovento nightclub. The men convinced her to come outside with them and took her into the back seat of the car where she was raped by them in turn.

The girl was drunk at the time and unable to understand what was happening. The abuse was stopped only when some passers by realised that they knew her and intervened on her behalf.

One of these was a relation who then went with her the following day to the health centre and to report the crime at the Guardia Civil. The girl herself did not remember anything of the events.

The four years sentence for the men takes into account the amount of time that has passed since the crime was committed. Due to her drunken state the girl did not resist and so the charge of rape cannot be made. The woman has also been awarded compensation of €30,000. The law which prevents the charge of rape being applied in cases such as this has been severely criticised Continued on page 6

The council departments responsible for Beaches and Contracting for the City of Orihuela have made a joint announcement regarding the contract for supplying beach services to the coast. The Central Administrative Court of Contractual Appeals has issued two resolutions dismissing the claims filed in regard to this

contract. As it was these complaints that had delayed the issuing of a new contract, the

decision means that a new contract for these services can now go ahead.

Councillor Boné (Beaches) and Councillor Sáez (Recruitment) have praised the decision of the administrative court’s dismissal and welcomed the confirmation that the whole procedure can move forward.

Sign up for the youth camp There will be opportunities for young people between the ages of 12 and 14 to sign up for the Campamento Urbano Juvenil from Monday 23rd July. The Youth Summer School will take place from 30th July until 10th August as announced by councillor Víctor Ferrández.

The school is free and is open between 10am and 1.30pm with the dual purpose of being somewhere enjoyable for young people to go whilst also helping those who are out to work during these times. The idea is that there is opportunity to try new activities with new people and broaden horizons. ‘’It’s a chance to experience something new,’ explained the councillor, ‘in a different environment to what the young people are used to and with new friends.’ There will be an overnight trip to Tabarca included, providing opportunity to snorkel and get to know an area that has a very important marine biodiversity.

Activities available will include sports, arts and creative and cultural workshops. Although the base for the Summer School is the CIAJ building, activities will take place in different areas depending upon what’s on offer. There will be trips to the beach, the submarine museum, craft workshops, opportunity to learn to play traditional games, theatre, cooperative games and films.

In other countries, such as the UK, the charge of rape can be applied where no physical resistance is made but the attacker is aware that consent has not been given.

Police charity calendar The new APANEE charity calendar for 2019 features some unusual stars this year. The pages of the calendar are filled with members of the Guardia Civil – both male and female. La Asociación de Padres de Alumnos con Necesidades Educativas Especiales de Torrevieja (APANEE) is a school which caters for children and young people with severe disabilities.

There are 55 children altogether who attend the school and they need a diverse range of equipment and support. It takes about €120,000 a year to provide the specialists, therapies and essential treatments that the children need. Many of these are not covered by state and regional health.

This latest project is hoped to raise money for the school and each calendar page features a member of the Guardia with children at the school. The photos have been taken in some of the most attractive parts of the town including the Parque de Naciones, by the Bella Lola sculpture, by the water mill and finally, a family photo at the barracks themselves.

The calendar will be presented in November and it is expected that there will be a circulation of around 5,000 copies.

It’s an annual event. A small group of children who live in the Sahara come and spend their summer in Torrevieja free of charge. It’s a gesture to show recognition of the harm that Spain did when abandoning the area, creating many refugees.

This year there are ten children who are taking part in the ‘Vacaciones en Paz’ and are staying with local families. On 18th July the children met the mayor, José Manuel Dolón, at the town hall and received gifts including school equipment.

The programme that takes place every summer is organised by FANS which stands for Familias de Acogida de Niños Saharauis. Carmen Pérez is the president and she has made an appeal for more families in subsequent years to provide accommodation as there are no shortages of children who can benefit.

The age range of the children varies

from six years old to ten and children are limited in the number of years that they can take part. Back in their homeland, they live in very difficult conditions in refugee camps. The temperature there reaches 56 degrees in the summer and they do not have the luxury of air conditioning and sometimes lack water too.

In addition to this summer placement scheme there is also one which allows children to attend during the school year and return to their homes in the summer.

At intervals, items are also sent over to the camps including basic provisions such as toothpaste. Recently, 800 toothpaste kits were distributed there.

Whilst the children are over here they are able to relax and enjoy themselves whilst also undergoing a variety of medical checks to ensure that they are in good health.

The town hall of Torrevieja is taking the financial irregularities of the Sevillanas Fair to the prosecutor’s office. It is alleged that charges of €200 were made to reserve tents outside of the official contracts. A report from the town auditor has been submitted which alleges that money was paid in addition to that agreed.

Documents were registered with the courts on July 10th which include details about the transactions that are alleged to have taken place allowing informal reservation of the marquees that are hired out by different associations during the popular May event.

Administrators from the town hall noted that the company who had been awarded the management of the fair had charged associations €200 to reserve their marquee in the place they asked for. This

practice was not part of the official agreement of how the fair should be run.

La Casa de Andalucía is the association responsible and in their defence they have pointed out that the money was returned as soon as the irregularities were made public. It’s also claimed that the money was being used for legitimate purposes, including to provide additional facilities that were not already covered, including the need for private security.

Another controversial aspect of the management of the fair was the monopoly that appeared to be held by one beer provider. One company had exclusive distribution of their brand of beer in the majority of the marquees.

Although it does not appear that this has been included in the prosecutor’s file.

Beaches for dogs – appeal to end the conflict More than 200 bathers asked for people to respect the new beaches for dogs in Torrevieja during a protest on 16th July. The beaches, Punta Margallo, Cala del Moro or del Mal Paso are the centre of the disagreement about where or if dogs should be allowed on the beach.

The supporters of the move to allow people to enjoy the beach with their pets has been countered by an equivalent number of local people who oppose the use of neighbouring beaches for the purpose.

Debates have become so heated between those opposing and those supporting the move that the local police have had to be called at times. The latest protests, this time by those supporting the beaches, went off without incident. Local residents opposing them collected in the vicinity but kept their distance as the bathers enjoyed the sand and sea with their pets.

It might seem like an obvious statement, but visibility is one of the most important factors when driving. This time, we are not talking about being seen however, but rather the ability to see.

Over time, our eyesight can deteriorate.

It is very common, but the biggest problem often is that the deterioration is subtle, taking time to worsen. Often, when we do have an eye test and put spectacles on for the first time following a test, the difference is astounding, because we hadn´t realised how bad our eyes had got, over time.

Given the importance of being able to see well, more than 1,000 opticians all over Spain will carry out a free vision test as part of a review campaign to try and get people seeing better when driving.

From the results of a recent survey, it was revealed that more than two million drivers recognise that they have vision problems, and despite that, "two out of three drivers consider that their vision affects their road safety".

The study highlights that most drivers recognise that their vision has worsened in recent years, and they notice it especially at

night (30%), and when it comes to clearly seeing road signs (17%) Another of the main risk factors, especially when travelling long distances, stresses TomĂĄs Santa Cecilia, director of road safety group RACE, is the lack of rest: "You have to stop every two hours or 200 kilometres." However, 72% of drivers admit that they never make a stop, a figure that reaches 80% in the case of those over 56 years.

Another danger is glare. About 80% of the participants in the study claim to have

Until July 31, more than 1,000 opticians from all over Spain will carry out a free vision test. Those interested can perform a

suffered temporary blindness due to glare, and three out of four indicate that this situation has affected their road safety.

However, half of drivers do not wear polarized sunglasses when driving.

The Dean of the College of OpticiansOptometrists, Juan Carlos MartĂ­nez, states that "the advice is to conduct a review on an annual basis." In order to remind ourselves that "vision is a key aspect in terms of road safety, at the same level as the use of the seat belt and helmet in the case of motorcycles."

visual test, created specifically for this campaign by the deans and coordinators of the 13 Faculties of Optics and Optometry that are in Spain.

The examination takes into account the current legislation in force regarding psychophysical aptitudes for driving and analyses all the visual aspects that directly affect driving, such as stereopsis (ability to see in 3D), the visual field, and sensitivity to contrast or intraocular pressure, in addition to checking if there is any latent pathology that may be affecting the user's visual capacity.

Woman stung by Portuguese Man-o-war A 33 year old Elche woman was stung by a Portuguese Man-o-war in Santa Pola this week. The woman required hospital treatment after she was stung on Saturday morning. She said, “I had just got into the water about ten seconds previously and I noticed I was stung by it.

It was a severe pain, like I had stuck my fingers in a plug socket, similar to an electric shock.”

The woman was swimming in one of the coves under the lighthouse in Santa Pola. After the she was stung, the woman was initially treated at the health centre in the Santa Pola itself, where she was given anti-inflammatories and antihistamines.

However, as the pain persisted, she decided to go to the Hospital in Elche.

The woman remarked that she didn’t see the Man-o-war itself, saying "When I told the doctors the symptoms I had and the tingling I felt in my arms, even though it stung my leg, they assured me it was a Portuguese Man-o-war.”

Car crash close to town school On the 19th July a car ‘landed’ outside Las Lagunas secondary school in Torrevieja.

The car had left the road Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas to finally stop just outside the school on the playground. This is an area that on a normal working school day would be full of school children.

The car had ploughed through the perimeter fence and a service lane before finally coming to a halt. It was being driven by a woman at 9.50 in the morning and was travelling in the direction of Alicante. It is currently unknown how and why the woman lost control of the vehicle.

The Local Police were called to the accident and began to investigate how the car had ended up so far from the main road itself. It is estimated that its final resting place was 20 metres from the dual carriageway where it had been travelling.

It is believed that the car had just come off the controversial illegal roundabout

and managed to travel across and demolish a number of barriers before finally stopping. It was a lucky escape for the school children who use this area and would have been there had it not been holiday time.

Las Lagunas secondary school is the largest in Torrevieja and has 1,200 students including evening classes. The school has raised its concerns on a number of occasions about the Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas which used to serve as the old N-332.

This part of the road became a dual carriageway in the nineties and the roundabout was built there illegally in the year 2000. Since then there have been attempts to organise its demolition and recover the money from the company who built it. However, this company, JOST, are now no longer trading.

Reward for missing cat Please can you help reunite Casper with his distraught owner? Casper the cat went missing several weeks ago, but has been seen in the areas around his home and may well be being fed and looked after by someone who has no idea he has a loving home and is missed very much.

Casper is a cream cat with hint of ginger in his fur and lives at Lomas de Cabo Roig, near to the Aldi supermarket.

His owner Teresa bonded with Casper as

a kitten, taking the rescued feline from Finca Castellana three years’ ago. Casper means the world to her, and she is offering a reward for his safe return. Teresa said the Casper has been castrated and has a skin problem and conjunctive eye and so needs regular treatments and she is concerned for his welfare.

Valencian man dodges work for ten years A civil servant in Valencia who dodged work every day for ten years has been banned from taking a public post for nine years.

Carles Recio, an archives director for the provincial government in Valencia, arrived for work each morning at 7.30am to clock in, before leaving the office for the day only to return to clock out at 4pm.

Recio managed to dodge work for 10 years and only lost his €50K a year job when colleagues voiced their suspicions last year and he was eventually sacked.

“I’ve been working like a dog,” Recio told La Sexta TV channel when the allegations first emerged.

“Working like a dog so that others can reap the rewards of my work.”

The civil servant claimed that he carried out all his duties outside the office, though investigators failed to find any record of work he claimed to have done.

A tribunal dismissed his explanation.

Recio later claimed he worked out of the office as he was a victim of harassment by coworkers.

However, an attempt to bring criminal

charges against Recio was later dropped by state prosecutors, who decided his 10year absence did not constitute a crime.

However, a civil court found him guilty of “clearly intending to not go to work and carry out his work duties for a continued

period of time”. The court did not disclose if he had to pay back any of his salary.

Earlier this year, Valencian authorities were forced to cancel an art show titled, “Love for Valencia: the works of a man who never worked”, after it emerged Recio was the artist behind the exhibition.

He used a fake identity to book to show, which described Recio as “the most slandered writer in modern-day Valencia”.

Torrevieja salt tour begins One of Torrevieja’s original industries, before tourism set in, was the salt trade. Now the two are being combined with tours arranged that show people around the major salt landmarks in the town. The guided tours will continue from now until 30th September. They take around 50 minutes during which people find out more about the different stages of salt production.

The councillor for tourism, Fanny Serrano, took part in the very first of these organised visits. Each visitor has an audio guide through which they receive information about the salt works themselves, the salt lakes and their flora and fauna and odd items of interesting information. For example, the reason why the pink lake is pink and which countries receive the most salt from Torrevieja.

The trip is conducted on the tourist train which takes them into the works itself from where they can take pictures of the operation. They can also touch the salt and climb one of the mountains if they choose. The area around the pink salt lake is often described as something of a lunar landscape.

Similarly the salt mountains themselves also have a surreal feel to them and one which is worth experiencing. It is expected that as many as 20,000 visitors will take part in the tour this summer alone.

If you would like to take part in this tour, the train sets off from the Avenida de la Libertad every hour from 10am until 8pm, every two hours. The cost is only €6.95 for adults and €5.95 for pensioners and children between the ages of 2 and 12.

Many homes in Spain have a solarium - and apart from being a lovely place to sunbathe, it offers a great location for recreation, entertaining, and as an additional outdoor living space for the building's residents. Add some plants and you have a wonderful oasis.

T

he roof garden has a long history - humans have grown plants atop structures since antiquity. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon were apparently roof gardens, built over an arcaded palace in ascending terraces. Water was raised by pump - and if you visit Lorca Castle, you will see, beautifully preserved, the same system was employed there to raise water to the garrison. Your solarium does not present the same problems, but watering is a consideration unless you want to drag heavy watering cans up the steps. So a plumbed in tap is a useful start.

Your roof garden may include planters, plants, dining and lounging furniture, outdoor structures such as pergolas and sheds, and automated irrigation and lighting systems. However, the first important consideration is whether your sunroof is strong enough to bear the weight of the things you plan to put there! You don’t want it to cause damage to the house structure and it may be wise to keep really large, heavy pots around the edge where the roof support is the strongest.

The flooring provided by most builders is tile - and that is fine, but wooden decking gives the area a completely different character. It does not get so hot under bare feet and is less dazzling in bright sunlight.

When choosing plants, keep in mind that, being higher up, they are exposed to the wind and this has a very dehydrating effect on the plants - and of course, in the summer it is extremely hot. An automated irrigation system is strongly recommended and will

save you a lot of work. Potted plants always need lots more water than those planted in the ground. They also need feeding more regularly as they are unable to spread their roots out to find nutrients. A windbreak is usually a necessity to protect you from the prevailing wind and provide some privacy. A living screen in big tubs, such as bamboo or conifers, is ideal for this: It is not like a solid fence, shutting you in and the weight of the tubs will keep it firmly anchored.

A pergola is a lovely addition to provide shade and support climbers - but it need to be anchored firmly. Preferably to the walls - holes drilled into flat roofs tend to cause leaks! You can grow all sorts of climbers up and around it. Bougainvillea loves to be in a confined pot and flowers best when fairly pot bound, but ivies, bignonia and even a grapevine would do very well scrambling over it.

Groups of similar pots look great and in this climate, cacti and succulents are the perfect candidates to enjoy the full sunlight on the roof. And herbs such as Rosemary and Lavender will flourish with very little attention (and smell lovely as you brush past, too). Standard plants of any kind look lovely and add height to your arrangement. Almost any plant can be trained to a standard shape; but bay, bottle brush, roses, ficus and hibiscus are popular choices. Some potted geraniums and other heat loving flowers will add colour, while palms, cicas, strelitzias, etc. provide an instant tropical look.

If you are fortunate enough to have a large roof garden, you might consider screening it with room-like spaces using robust trellis; this adds additional wind protection and makes the area seem even larger. And of course the roof is a natural place for a stone barbeque because the smoke doesn’t blow into the house!

So, if your sun roof is a bare, sterile place except for a sun lounger and an umbrella - think how easy it would be to turn it into a delightful, outdoor room in which to enjoy the sunshine or the long summer evenings in good friends’ company…

Welcome to Turin with Vivalia Travel Close to the Alps, Turin makes a good starting-point for skiing holidays; it also deserves a few days to itself as tourist destination.

Turin is the capital of Italy's Piemonte region, in the far north-west of the country, and is famous for a curious assortment of things: including Fiat, chocolate, football and the Turin Shroud. Turin does not have the political importance it once held before the parliament of a united Italy moved to Rome, but the city is a major industrial centre (most famous for car manufacturer Fiat) and the attractive town centre is cosmopolitan and

gracious. The city is full of noble equestrian statues of Savoy princes and elegant arcaded streets for allweather shopping and strolling, with an atmosphere that is calmer than most Italian cities. The car parking, though, is notable even by Italian standards: drivers make a habit of abandoning their cars in the middle of streets and junctions.

Pedestrians should be aware of the many streets which pass through the arcades: you can be strolling along under a portico window shopping when a car cuts across your path.

Turin's tourist attractions include the Mole Antonelliana, a strange, spire-topped building which features on the Italian 2 euro-cent coin. A good museum of cinema is housed in the building.

Other Turin museums

include the excellent Egyptian Museum Piazza Castello is the heart of tourist Turin, home to grand palaces such as Palazzo Reale, the royal palace of the Savoy dynasty, and Palazzo Madama, previously a castle, prison, barracks and senate house. Around the Piazza and indeed throughout Turin - you will find elegant historic cafes; an important part of Turin life.

Turin is home to two major football clubs: Juventus and Torino.

Juventus are one of the most successful and powerful clubs in Italy with a large fanbase through Italy and beyond, while Torino are the team of choice for many locals. Both teams play at the Stadio delle Alpi, a panoramically-situated stadium on the edge of town, with special bus connections on match days.

Turin was the base for the 2006 Winter Olympics, and there are several good skiing resorts within easy reach of the city.

Turin is also renowned as the setting for the original film of The Italian Job, starring Michael Caine, and fans can enjoy themselves spotting locations from the film.

Likes being a victim

There’s always an entourage

Is it possible for someone to love being miserable? We have a friend who is very needy, and almost enjoys having problems. For years now we have been trying to help this person. They complain about not having a partner, not being successful in work, having health problems but not wanting to go to the doctor. It’s frustrating and this person takes up a huge amount of our time, and is very emotionally dependent. Whatever we do to try and help, falls on deaf ears.

I have a friend who I’ve known for years. She’s a very nice, popular girl and everyone likes her and considers her their best friend. My problem is that she will suggest meeting up, or going for a meal and when I arrive, she’s usually got an entourage with her, or at the very least there’s always someone else there. She invited me and my husband over for a meal once, and there was another two couples there. It can be very annoying. I sometimes think am I boring to her.

This condition is called the ‘Victim Mentality’. As a friend, enabling this kind of person does not help. All you do is give them a crutch to continue to do nothing. They feel pleasure at receiving sympathy. Help them focus on where they are going to, not what they are going through. You’ve tried to help, but it can sometimes be quite impossible to help those who perpetually feel sorry for themselves, and won’t take any responsibility for their life. We can all change our circumstances, but we’ve got to want it.

I don’t think there’s any need for you to feel bad. Have you considered that you may not be alone? I am assuming as this girl has lots of friends, that she may well do this to her other friends too? For some reason she needs to surround herself with people. If you object, the next time she suggests meeting up, you could ask her if it will just be the two of you. Or, invite her to your place to ensure only she turns up.

The rise of the Gin and Tonic Once called ‘mother’s ruin’, gin was actually incredibly popular in the UK back in the 1700s – in fact, it got somewhat out of hand. There were around 7000 (legal) gin shops in London alone, plus many more distributers acting outside the law, in the 1730s. By 1743, England was consuming 10 litres of gin per person annually. The Gin Act in 1751, plus a greater demand for tea and some bad harvests making gin more pricey, put an end to this massive craze.

Now featuring in the sample UK shopping basket to calculate inflation, gin has had a comeback in recent years, although consumption habits are quite

different from those in the 16th century.

1. Premiumisation & positioning There have been a number of factors that have conspired to make gin a more popular choice with consumers, with the origins being the acquisition of (and subsequent marketing investment in) Bombay Sapphire. It established the notion that there was something you could ‘trade up to’ in gin, says Matt Woodhams, Director at Kantar Consulting. ‘Gin was for the most part a standard category with no widely available mainstream premiumisation route. The beauty of the bottle, and the imagery and visual appeal around Bombay Sapphire, plus the marketing activation, gave it premium back bar appeal.’

‘The subsequent arrival of Hendricks, with its distinctive flavour, serve and positioning, and engaging marketing activity bringing the brand to life, added to the interest in premium gin, alongside renewed investment in what had been fairly dormant brands like Beefeater and Plymouth.’

2. Craft gins & better tonics With gin being comparatively easy to make, a multitude of ‘craft’ gin brands have sprung up, boasting both local credentials and unique flavour combinations that

It also gives gin the discernment credentials that craft beer has enjoyed, with the result that there are now 200 gin producers in Scotland alone, as well as hyper local brands made in small quantities like Mayfield Gin from Sussex, as well as esoteric, experimental gins like Sacred, based in a residential house in North London, and producing award-winning liquids using vacuum distillation and a ‘library’ of over 100 botanicals.

With the arrival of super premium mixers like Fever Tree and the subsequent proliferation of tonic flavours, the opportunity for a discerning but refreshing and ‘personalised’ long drink choice using gin as a base opened up growth in a number of different drinking occasions untapped by traditional discerning spirits categories.

3. Customisation & experience One of the things that helped Hendricks stand out was the custom serve highlighting its unique flavour profile (it’s served with cucumber rather than lime, generally). This was the beginning of the idea of customisation and personalisation within

the gin category, something that was happening in here in Spain where the theatre of service – gin being poured at the table, into a large ‘copa’ glass filled with ice – was more common.

Not so long ago ordering a gin and tonic meant staff would turn around to service it from an optic. It would be in a small glass, and you’d be asked if you wanted ice and lemon. Now, with gin often served in specific glassware, there is far more theatre to the pour, and the whole experience is far more visible.

4. Supply & choice Gin is, comparatively, easy to make, hence the craft revival. You don’t have to age gin (unlike many other spirits categories) so the production is requires less capital and time. Moreover, the process of flavouring the spirit adds enough value to make this a profitable venture for those ready to get on with distilling – hence the roughly 200 companies distilling gin in Scotland, where the infrastructure and equipment already in place for whisky make this venture very appealing.

In the gin category, the amount of competition has actually been very

beneficial. This choice for consumers leads to more visibility, and has also enhanced the idea that a consumer can customise the drink to their personal preferences. ‘Choice is a virtue of the category,’ says Woodhams. ‘It allows customers to be, or be seen to be, more discerning. Different bars and pubs will have a different serve for each gin so the customisation is also very visible, and the proliferation of mixer flavours creates an even bigger choice.’

Interestingly, while people enjoy this perception of choice, most people still choose standard gin and standard tonic – but there are lots of options to support that choice.

Flavoured gin has been one of the biggest success stories in recent years.

Pink Gin’s association with growing categories like spritzes and the light, refreshing aperitivo, as well as Prosecco cocktails, has helped to widen the gin category by expanding the occasions upon which gin is consumed and keeping it very much on trend.

5. New habits in drinking and socialising The way we drink has changed, and this has made gin (and other spirits) more likely to be chosen than beer. ‘We spend less time in pubs, where the focus has always been on beer. As we opt for less high-tempo experiences (like nightclubs) and spend more time in midtempo environments, like casual dining venues, the drinks we are choosing are changing.’

Even in bars and pubs, gin and tonic is a good proposition where you just want one drink, but not beer or wine, or something fresh to kick off the evening.

Two years in prison for spying on wife's WhatsApp An Elche man has been sentenced to two years in prison for spying on his wife’s WhatsApp messages.

A court in Alicante sentenced the man this week, considering the act a serious invasion of the woman’s privacy. The man was also handed a four year restraining order.

The woman in question had accused her partner of over twenty counts of gender violence, for which the prosecutor had been asking for 80 years in prison. The woman said that she had been mistreated since 2014 until the marriage broke down two years later.

The man was accused of seven counts of rape, two of threats, four of mistreatment and one of assault.

According to magistrates, the evidence was scarce and insufficient to substantiate a conviction. All that was available was the victim's statement, "without any outside corroboration."

During the trial, the defendant denied having spied on his wife's phone, but in one of his previous statements in court he did acknowledge that he had reset his wife’s phone to prevent her from accessing her cloud storage and that sometimes he used the application to read her WhatsApp conversations.

Customers visiting the Consulate in Alicante will enjoy a renovated look with images that showcase scenes from the UK regions.

The images and messages have been selected from the GREAT campaign as well as the new “I Travel For” Visit Britain campaign. Most of the images chosen are UK outdoors scenes, and the Consulate took a particular interest in featuring parts of the UK their customers most frequently come from.

Visitors will be greeted by Llanddwyn Island Lighthouse and Henrhyd Waterfall as they come in.

Once in the waiting room, the Bristol Balloon Festival, a night scene of Edinburg and a view of the Lake District have replaced extra notice boards. Other UK scenes have been distributed in meeting rooms and other nonpublic areas of the Consulate.

Consul Sarah-Jane Morris said: “We have upgraded the look of the Consulate with our customers in mind, to help them to feel more at home and reduce the stress that a lost or stolen passport can cause. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Sir/Madam I was wondering whether any of your readers have encountered problems with Banco Sabadell. I have an "Inversion" account and on the 10th of each month, via direct debit, a sum of money is transferred from my UK bank. For some unknown reason the transfer can take up to 5 working days. Yet I know from experience that with some accounts money transfers can be almost instantaneous. In this modern age and with banking systems apparently aligned via IBAN and Swift codes why is there still this disparity?

To further annoy me this week there has been a "technical" problem which has resulted in hundreds of cash transfers across the Costa Blanca, (mine included) not going through. It is a waste of time trying to get a resolution locally as one is met with a shrug of the shoulders and standard reply "It is a head office problem, sorry". I have written to the bank via email, last Friday, but have still not had a reply.

An explanation of the problem might help but how do I explain to Iberdrola why

my payment won't go through this month?

Joe For the Editor, Costa Blanca People I am not a member of Crescendo International Choir, nor am I a singer of any quality. I do however like to listen to good music well performed, and as such am a regular at Crescendo concerts. I was at the concert in Orihuela Cathedral on 30th June and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience, including the part played by the choir. I am surprised that you chose to print the letter from someone who obviously has an issue with the gig.

Many of the best choirs in the world will use guest artists should the wish or necessity arise. It is a shame that some person chooses such a negative viewpoint when, to the best of my knowledge, all those present enjoyed the whole day.

It is also a shame that your correspondent forgot to mention all the monies that the choir manages to raise for numerous charities through the popularity of their concerts, whilst performing at their own expense.

FOOTBALL DIDN'T STOP PLAY Satgestruck donate to F.A.B. AECC office closed for the summer

It was an exciting day for English football fans on 11th July, with England playing in the semi-finals of the World Cup. Attendance at the Charity Night for Stroke Association Spain at El Paraiso Restaurant was down on expectations, but with three TV screens showing the match, the 110 people who did attend were able to follow the game.

The band, Best of British, provided great entertainment, despite having to compete with the football at the

beginning of their performance. It was quite entertaining itself to watch the band members taking sneaky looks at the TV screens whilst playing.

Patrons were generous, as always, and the event raised 622.75 euros for the charity. This will go a long way to provide equipment and supplies for stroke sufferers.

The next charity night will be on Thursday, 18th October, with the very popular, WOODY. Another great night guaranteed.

The Stagestruck Theatre Group has now presented its final charitable donation from the proceeds raised from their last show, ‘From a Jack to a King’. The cheque for €1,000 was presented to F.A.B. which is a breat cancer charity that operates under the Spanish AECC. This latest donation now brings the total amount given to charity following the show to €5,500. Since May 2015, when Leigh Humphries took over as director, Stagestruck has donated a total of €25,750 to a number of different charities.

This latest donation has particular significance for Leigh. She has herself recently completed treatment for breast cancer and it was her own personal experience that prompted Sue Appleton and Carol Holder to establish the charity F.A.B. They, along with Leigh and other women who have been affected by the disease, are aiming to raise a total of €10,000 over the next year.

F.A.B. are hoping that others will join in their campaign by organising their own fund raising activities and events. This could be anything from a sponsored

swim to a quiz night. Anyone who does, will be invited to a presentation evening at the Cardenal Belluga Theatre in San Fulgencio in June 2019.

The evening will take the form of a variety show with a range of acts interspersed with personal stories from breast cancer survivors. Individuals and associations will also be invited to contribute with their own fund raising stories and will have a platform during which they can present the money that they have raised for the charity.

Costa Blanca People Defibrillator Campaign Update In response to community concerns regarding the prompt arrival of ambulances to emergency situations in Orihuela Costa, in May the Costa Blanca People launched its Orihuela Costa Defibrillator Campaign.

We asked all of our readers and advertisers to help us protect the heart of the community by raising as much money as we possibly can to place defibrillators in every Polica Local patrol car on the coast.

Working in conjunction with Cruz Roja and Help at Home Costa Blanca, the campaign has the full support of the Town Hall and Local Police Department.

There are currently five police cars and a police van allocated to Orihuela Costa and the officers manning these vehicles are usually the first responders to any emergency call in the local area. This means that if someone’s heart has stopped – for whatever reason - at home, in the street, at the gym, in a shop or on the beach the police are the first on the scene. By carrying professional healthcare standard defibrillators the officers will have more opportunity to save lives.

The fundraising campaign aims to raise the money for the defibrillators themselves, being advised by Cruz Roja as to which specific machines should be bought, and to provide a spare battery and adult and child pads for each one. It

will also pay for the Cruz Roja to fully train the relevant number of police officers on how to use the equipment.

Running total The campaign got off to a flying start when Help Vega Baja donated €1,500 to the campaign, covering one defibrillator, with spare pads and battery and also covering all of the training costs. The Costa Blanca People then donated the money raised at its Culinary Awards – €424 - which was very generously boosted to €800 on the night by Money Corp, courtesy of Regional Director Norman Marks, which was the main sponsor of the event and

continuously supports local community initiatives.

Help at Home Costa Blanca, has be working tirelessly on behalf of the campaign and has to date raised an amazing €3,200 – giving us a running total of €5,500 towards our €10,000 goal. The charity has raised the money through a quiz at Singers Bar in Villamartin and is holding a Fashion Show at the Emerald Isle on 3rd July as well as its weekly market at the Emerald Isle every Tuesday.

At this half way point we are calling on local bars, restaurants, businesses and entertainers to host events and help us to reach our target. If possible, we would like to use any additional funds to place defibs in other key locations within the local community such as commercial centres once the initial five have been bought.

Any monies raised can be handed over to Help at Home Costa Blanca which will be managing the funds for us. Members of the local community can make donations at the Help at Home shops in Playa Flamenca and Cabo Roig or to the charity at the weekly Tuesday market held at The Emerald Isle, La Florida. Help Vega Baja is also happy to collect donations made at its headquarters in San Miguel.

Local man Gregg Lomas is determined to raise funds for a little known school in Gambia.

Many readers will already know Gregg as he was a professional singer for 15 years before hanging up his guitar two and a half years ago to focus on his tattoo studio, Black Cat Ink. Gregg became incredibly moved upon hearing the story of the boys and girls of the Kotukala School and with no hesitation joined the mission to help.

During a recent tattoo session, a client told BCI about all the hard work they - along with the Spanish Insurance Group - plan to do for the remote and often forgotten school in Gambia.

In desperate need of help and receiving little or no outside help, it is becoming impossible for the school to cover even basic day to day costs.

Last year, a team from the Costa Blanca gave up their time to head over to the school to help out and were immediately blown away by the sheer determination from both teachers and children to educate and be educated in a desperate attempt at a better life despite such poor conditions.

Gregg is set to travel to Gambia in August to help carry out essential maintenance work on the school. He is covering his own travel costs and expenses but

is actively fundraising for the work on the school itself, hoping to buy materials, school supplies and whatever is needed. Along with a small team of volunteers, Gregg will be painting classrooms, fixing furniture, delivering supplies and desperately trying to prepare the school and children for the next term.

Already, Gregg has jumped out of a plane to raise funds and awareness for the campaign. Now, he is back on stage for one night only. The gig takes place on August 10th at 10.30pm at the Stray Sod Irish bar and all proceeds go to the Kotukala School.

In fact, not only is she world champion, she also had to get special permission to race because she was the youngest ever competitor! She swims to Tabarca Island and back in rough seas and although she only started fin swimming this year, she was good enough to compete against the existing Spanish Champions and came 6th in the whole country!

She trains six days per week for up to four hours at a time, mixing swimming sessions with gym work. Not only that, but she spends her time poolside with her head in the books, as she intends to

From there Norah established Help at Home Costa Blanca, a charity providing home help and general basic medical care to those who need it, such as the elderly or those living alone.

Most recently Norah has battled to establish a registered Community Care Association on the Cost with a drop-in centre offering friendship, activities and treatments such as Stroke support and physiotherapy for local residents.

Norah has an inbred tenacity and

despite having cancer three times still manages to have the energy and determination to rattle the UK and Spanish authorities enough that they take notice of what she is saying...or ignore her at their own peril.

Norah is a force to be reckoned with and has devoted her life in Spain to helping others and fighting for their rights, she gives her time freely and tirelessly and also fought many a battle with the local authorities on behalf of the expat underdog. If you are on the ropes, then this is the lady you want in your corner.

Saturday 28 July Hitman: Agent 47 Channel 4 10pm In 1967, Ukrainian scientist Dr Litvenko created genetically modified people who had superior reflexes and intellect, but lacked emotion, fear or remorse: the perfect killing machines. But, seemingly troubled by his work, Litvenko vanished, taking his secrets with him. The programme was shut down and the killers, known as Agents, began work as assassins for a shadowy group called the Agency. Many, including The Syndicate terrorist organisation, tried to replicate the programme, but all failed. Decades later, discovering that Litvenko had left behind a daughter, The Syndicate realised they might find him if they could trace her to wherever she’s now living. And so the hunt is on. The Agency sends Agent 47 to kill Litvenko’s daughter Katia, while the mysterious John Smith appears out of nowhere to protect her. Or at least that’s how things seem at the start.

Perhaps as a result, more than a third (35%) of binge viewers, and almost half (47%) of young adults aged 16-24 are trying to cut down their viewing in some way. This includes rationing their viewing (19%), finding an alternative hobby (10%), or even cancelling a TV subscription (4%).

Binge viewing has such a strong allure that many viewers say they don’t intend to do it, but the pull of the next episode keeps them tuned in.

More than seven in ten (74%) say they sometimes watch more than they intend to, while 18% say this always happens.

Bingeing is most popular among young people: more than half (53%) of those aged 12-15 enjoy weekly watcha-thons, compared to just 16% of over65s.

For that older age group, more than half (59%) prefer a traditional release of one episode per week.

For many binge viewers, the desire to keep up with programmes is driven by fear of someone spoiling a programme’s ending (25%). This can result in some (16%) feeling under pressure to keep up with the viewing habits of family or friends.

And for some, the days of being tied to the TV schedule are fading, as UK viewers take advantage of being able to watch whenever, wherever they like. More than a third of people watch TV on the move – while on holiday (24%), while commuting (16%) or even in the pub (7%).

Just over a half of people (51%) watch TV in their bedroom, while others watch in the kitchen (16%), the garden (9%) or the bathroom (9%).

Binge watching Britain The UK has become a nation of binge viewers, Ofcom research reveals, with eight in ten adults now watching multiple episodes of their favourite shows in a single sitting.

The findings are part of Ofcom’s annual Communications Market Report which reveals stark differences in how older and younger people watch television.

Eight in ten adults in the UK (79%) – or 40 million people – use catch-up technology such as BBC iPlayer, or subscription services such as Netflix, to watch multiple episodes of a series in one sitting, wiping out the wait for next week’s instalment. One third (35%) do so every week and more than half (55%) do it monthly.

Most binge viewers (70%) find this type of viewing relaxing and enjoyable, and for others it’s an opportunity to discuss with friends (24%). But around a third (32%) of adults admit the temptation to watch another episode has cost them sleep and left them feeling tired.

5 things you need to know before buying a property in Spain Falling in love with Spain isn’t hard. The gorgeous beaches, abundant sunshine and affordable, delicious food and wine can quickly get under visitors’ skin.

Golf lovers are also particularly well served by Spain, which has around 350 golf courses, many of them championship quality.

However, holidaying somewhere and buying a property there are two very different matters. As such, leading Spanish home builder Taylor Wimpey España, with its 60 years of experience, has provided its five top tips on what overseas buyers need to know before they put their money into the Spanish property market.

“Every country has its own unique quirks when it comes to buying property, and Spain is no different in this respect.

Understanding the local market can ensure a pleasurable buying experience rather than a stressful one, so it’s well worth taking a little time to research everything you need to know in advance.”

5 top tips for buying a property in Spain: 1. Choose the property type carefully Different types of property come with different financial implications. For example, many buyers assume that condominium charges only apply to apartments.

However, they also often apply to townhouses and villas built on private estates.

As two-thirds of foreign buyers in Spain opt for these types of community properties, according to Just Landed, buyers should be sure to check the details as part of the viewing process.

2. Arrange viewings early The summer months are an incredibly busy time for the Spanish property market, so it’s advisable to book viewings as far in advance as possible.

Don’t assume that it’s possible to just turn up and have a viewing on the same day without arranging an appointment in advance.

While that may well be doable over the winter months, it’s unlikely to be the case during the peak summer season.

3. Check the paperwork It’s important to view the nota simple (similar to a Land Registry extract) before committing to buying a home in Spain.

This is available from the Colegio de Registradores in Spanish, or in English for an additional fee. For new build homes, popular with many overseas buyers, the final building certification paperwork and guarantees all need to be in order, including certi-fication from a registered architect that the property is finished.

Buying with an established housebuilder offers a comforting degree of certainty in this respect, as all its new build homes come with final building certification, plus a guarantee that they comply with all relevant planning permissions.

4. Check the cadastral value Purchase tax in Spain is based on a

property’s cadastral value. Interestingly, this value can differ from the sale price, as it is calculated based on the council’s valuation of the property, rather than on the seller’s.

As such, buyers should not make assumptions about the purchase tax amount, but should instead check the cadastral value at the relevant regional government’s online tax agency site.

5. Choose a trusted seller Perhaps an obvious point, but one that’s still worth making. Choosing a company with a good reputation brings considerable peace of mind.

Not only does it offer assurance as to the quality of the property, but also in relation to how easy the transaction is likely to be - a key consideration when buying a home in another country.

Guardia Civil raid ‘puppy farm’ The Guardia Civil released images this week taken during a raid at a puppy farm in Castellón where animals were being kept in horrific circumstances. The illegal dog breeding centre was immediately shut down by officers and 397 dogs of varying breeds removed from the premises.

A 59 year old Spanish man who is believed to have owned and run the facility, has been arrested and is being charged with crimes including animal abuse and falsification of documents.

Guardia Civil were acting on a tip off following information by a

veterinary practitioner in the area who suspected that a number of dogs were being advertised for sale with paperwork, but that this paperwork was false. The vet raised the alarm when she managed to obtain evidence of the sale of these dogs with health cards in which her official stamp and signature appeared. A handwriting expert was

consulted and confirmed that the signature and stamp were forged.

Officers from SEPRONA, the environmental and animal welfare arm of the Guardia Civil mounted a surveillance operation on facilities they believed to be housing the puppy farm. During the raid, they discovered the illegal breeding of Yorkshire Terriers, Pomeranians, Chihuahuas and Bichon Maltese dogs. The puppies were later sent for sale, with false paperwork, to large petshops around Spain and to a shopping centre in Barcelona.

An inspection of the puppy farm by SEPRONA officers as well

as the official vet of the Valencian Community’s Ministry of Agriculture, found the dogs to be in an incredibly poor and unhygienic state with no veterinary care and the majority being unidentified with no microchips.

Government officials have proceeded with a temporary seizure of the animals while the premises is cleaned and disinfected. A vet will also be brought into supervise when the animals are relocated to an authorised facility.

During the raid, 500 doses of vaccines and veterinary drugs were seized as well as the syringes used by the owner to treat the animals. In addition, the forged veterinary stamp was found, believed to have been used on the puppies’ false documentation before they were fraudulently sold. Officers also made the macabre discovery of a number of dead puppies frozen in freezers on the premises.

THE AFTERLIFE: Are you a believer, a sceptic or a cynic?

As a Clairvoyant Medium I have a gift, and I share that gift with others to help them in their own lives. But as a child this was furthest from the truth. Mainly because I didn't understand what I could see, feel, and sense and when I tried to tell my Mum about my experiences she refused to listen. As children we see things initially in 'black and white' - without attachment to any outcome.

Until that is, our parents shape us into who they feel we should be based on what they believe in.

When we are little, we trust our parents' judgment in everything, so we feel that what they say must be right....

Those of you who have a similar gift to me will know that life as a medium isn't always a walk in the park but I am proud of the fact that most of my work arrives by word of mouth - if someone has come to me for a reading and they had a wonderful experience, they want to tell their friends and family about it, and that's how my work has grown over the years. It really is the best form of 'advertising' and it's free!

I know for a fact, that once someone passes to spirit, they live on, in what's known as 'The Afterlife'. I have received enough validation of this in both my personal life and working with spirit. When giving a reading to a client I invite

their loved ones forward and once they channel through me, they will pass on information such as beautiful memories, things around my client in the here and now, and information for the future, too.

However, not everyone believes in the afterlife, and that is their prerogative. Everyone should be able to believe in whatever they wish to. It's their life, and their choice. Many famous psychics have been put in a position where they have had to 'prove' their ability, whether it's on a TV Show, or the subject of an interview with a paid professional sceptic, often known as a journalist! It's my opinion that no-one should have to try to prove who they are. Why should they? But no matter what or who you believe in, there will always be someone trying to discredit you in some way.

When working with spirit, I pass on what I am given and I won't put my own interpretation on things. For example, I will relay what spirit are sharing to their loved one (my client) in as simple and yet succinct terms as possible. This won't be given in scientific terms such as cold hard facts, but through telepathic means, or images/visions.

Spirit don't have a voice box, so will also give me impressions of conditions they passed with, or

certain smells, or feelings. Yes, they will also put physical conditions on me too, which can often be very painful!

When dealing with sceptics or cynics I let them get on with it. In an audience situation they only show themselves up - especially those who partake of spirit of a different kind! I can't tell you how many times I have heard 'Is there anybody out there', or, 'If you're genuine, give us the lottery numbers love'. Hmmm, it just goes to prove that not everyone understands that I am a Medium, I communicate with the spirit world.

Yes, I do receive messages for people for the future, but I am NOT a fortune teller! If someone becomes bombastic, and/or uses foul language, then I would not hesitate to ask them to leave.

But I am happy to say such people are in the minority. Most people go home feeling loved, and comforted, having proof beyond any doubt that there is life after death.

I have worked at many venues over the years, and have done countless readings for people -

not all of them believers, but for me, to give a sceptic a message beyond the grave that they know without doubt that I couldn't possibly know, is pure magic.

SCEPTICS Sceptics are not always the 'bad boys'. They are not trying to prove you aren't who you say you are, it's just that they haven't had any evidence/signs from the spirit world themselves.

They expect scientific/sound evidence of the afterlife but even though they may be in doubt about the subject, they will often adopt an open mind to the subject. In other words, 'the jury is out there'.

CYNICS Cynicism on the other hand denotes 'a naysayer' - someone who wouldn't believe in the afterlife even if their Aunt Nelly appeared out of thin air in front of them. They will believe the worst scenario possible such as the person in question is always on the take, by trying to make money out of self interest/ financial gain.

Moroccan trafficking ring smashed

Guardia Civil this week revealed that they have successfully disbanded a criminal organization which trafficked people from Morocco in to Spain. The five leaders of the gang were arrested this week and three raids were made by officers as part of the operation.

It is believed that the gang trafficked people to Spain by sea – the recent sinking of one of the gang’s boats off the coast of Tangier resulted in six deaths and 30 people missing. 15 of those on the boat were unaccompanied minors.

The investigation began a number of months ago when officers noticed a higher

concentration of small boats arriving at one particular stretch of coast. It is estimated that in just a few months, the gang would have had the capability to arrange at least 19 immigrant transfers by boat with over 100 people putting their lives at risk to make the treacherous journey by sea.

The Guardia Civil described the structure of the gang as very similar to that observed on previous occasions regarding criminal gangs dedicated to human trafficking. A branch of the gang was located in Morocco itself, offering people there the opportunity for sea transfer to Spain by small boat

in exchange for money.

The Spanish branch of the organisation was responsible for meeting the boats as they arrived on Spanish soil.

Here, the gang would detain the immigrants and demand a further payment – they would threaten the immigrants that if they didn’t pay more money, they would be handed over to the Spanish authorities.

Officers believe that before making the journey, the immigrants had to pay the gang amounts ranging from €2000 to €5500 per person. When they arrived in Spain, they were usually made to pay a further €400 to €600. The Guardia Civil estimates that the gang has made a profit in excess of €200,000 since January alone.

Three raids were carried out during the investigation and as well as the arrests of the five gang leaders, officers seized two vehicles used for the transportation of the immigrants as well as a quantity of cash and several mobile phones.

Common cancer myths debunked - Part 1 more accurately, thanks to advances in screening, imaging and pathology.

Yes, lifestyle, diet and other things like air pollution collectively have a huge impact on our risk of cancer – smoking for instance is behind a quarter of all cancer deaths in the UK – but that’s not the same as saying it’s entirely a modern, manmade disease. There are plenty of natural causes of cancer – for example, one in six worldwide cancers is caused by viruses and bacteria.

Myth 1: Cancer is a man-made, modern disease It might be more prominent in the public consciousness now than in times gone by, but cancer is not just a ‘modern’, manmade disease of Western society. Cancer has existed as long as humans have. It was described thousands of years ago by Egyptian and Greek physicians, and researchers have discovered tell-tale signs of cancer in a 3,000-year-old skeleton. It’s even been discovered in dinosaur bones.

While it’s certainly true that global lifestyle-related diseases like cancer are on the rise, the biggest risk factor for cancer is age. The simple fact is that more people are living long enough to develop cancer because of our success in tackling infectious diseases and other historical causes of death such as malnutrition. It’s perfectly normal for DNA damage in our cells to build up as we age, and such damage can lead to cancer developing.

We’re also now able to diagnose cancers

Myth 2: Superfoods prevent cancer Blueberries, beetroot, broccoli, garlic, green tea… the list goes on. Despite thousands of websites claiming otherwise, there’s no such thing as a ‘superfood’. It’s a marketing term used to sell products and has no scientific basis.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t think about what you eat. Some foods are clearly healthier than others. The odd blueberry or mug of green tea certainly could be part of a healthy, balanced diet.

Stocking up on fruits and veg is a great idea, and eating a range of different veg is helpful too, but the specific vegetables you choose doesn’t really matter.

Our bodies are complex and cancer is too, so it’s gross oversimplification to say that any one food, on its own, could have a major influence over your chance of developing cancer.

The steady accumulation of evidence over several decades points to a simple, but not very newsworthy fact that the best way to reduce your risk of cancer is by a series of long-term healthy behaviours such as not smoking, keeping active, keeping a healthy body weight and cutting back on alcohol.

Myth 3: ‘Acidic’ diets cause cancer Some myths about cancer are surprisingly persistent, despite flying in the face of basic biology. One such idea is that overly ‘acidic’ diets cause your blood to become ‘too acidic’, which can increase your risk of cancer. Their proposed answer: increase your intake of healthier ‘alkaline’ foods like green vegetables and fruits (including, paradoxically, lemons).

This is biological nonsense. True, cancer cells can’t live in an overly alkaline environment, but neither can any of the other cells in your body.

Blood is usually slightly alkaline. This is tightly regulated by the kidneys within a very narrow and perfectly healthy range.

It can’t be changed for any meaningful amount of time by what you eat, and any extra acid or alkali is simply peed out in urine.

To maintain the correct balance within the body, your urine can and does change pH, depending on what you’ve eaten. This can be seen by testing urine pH (acidity) after eating different foods and is the basis of the mistaken belief that diet can “make the body alkaline”.

But that’s all you’re changing, and anyone who claims otherwise simply doesn’t understand how the body works.

While eating lots of green veg is certainly healthy, that’s not because of any effect on how acid or alkaline your body is.

Fish oil supplements for a healthy heart ‘nonsense’ Taking fish oil supplements is often touted as an easy way to protect your heart - but experts now claim the evidence that it does any good is flimsy at best.

A group of scientists at Cochrane researchers looked at trials in over 100,000 people and found little proof that it prevented heart disease.

Researchers said that the chance of getting any meaningful benefit from taking omega-3 is one in 1,000.

Eating oily fish, however, can still be recommended as part of a healthy diet. The NHS says people should try to eat two portions of fish per week, one of which should be oily fish, such as salmon, fresh tuna or mackerel, to get enough "good" fats.

Cochrane lead author, Dr Lee Hooper, said: "We can be confident in the findings of this review which go against the popular belief that longchain omega-3 supplements protect

the heart.

"This large systematic review included information from many thousands of people over long periods.

"Despite all this information, we don't see protective effects.

"The review provides good evidence that taking long-chain omega-3 supplements does not benefit heart health or reduce our risk of stroke or death from any cause.

You should also scan your computer with the free Malwarebytes as popup ads are also a sign of a possible spyware infection.

Lesley via email asks: I have just bought a new laptop from the UK with Windows 10 which has the Microsoft Home Student Office 2016 app installed but annoyingly this turned out to only be a trial and is now saying that it will expire in 10 days. When I look at the buying option it is asking for $149 which I can’t really afford. I really only use Word but I use all day and every day and have tried the free Open Office but it seems far more complicated to use. Is there any other simple alternative (free or cheap) program I can download?

Maybe try Google Docs or Libre Office which are both free and work as really good substitutes for most of the Microsoft Office programs, maybe also download some of the many free user manuals/tutorials. Luckily, the dog survived, whilst the owners will be dealt with on suspicion of offences of the mistreatment of animals.

Some countries don´t have motorways and so are excluded from this list.

These limits are a general rule and vary sometimes due to weather conditions, but always dependant on the type of vehicle you are driving, so it is important that you keep a check on the signs and research each country you will be passing through. The limits of the driver can also affect the maximum permitted speed, so this must also be taken into consideration.

BY CHRIS DARWEN It would seem that the manager of the Napoli of England is starting to annoy his previous employers, the actual Napoli, with his targeting of their players. Maurizio Sarri has been Chelsea manager less time than it took to sack Antonio Conte and already he is creating waves.

Having already got his cigarette-stained mitts on the Italian-or-maybe-he-is-Brazilian deep-lying midfield type Jorginho, Sarri has apparently gone back to Naples with a view to 'dismantling' his former squad. This is according to Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis, a man who has an utterly impeccable record when it comes to saying sensible things in interviews.

De Laurentiis has suggested that he had to "lay down the law" to Chelsea supremo Marina Granovskaia who, ironically, is actually a trained lawyer. De Laurentiis didn't go as far as giving us any names in terms of players Sarri wants to take to London but that gives us the perfect opportunity to throw some out there just because we can.

World Cup 3rd place winner Dries Mertens likes London, so he's coming. Lorenzo Insigne sees Sarri as a slightly batty uncle figure so he's definitely on his way to Stamford Bridge. Allan almost sounds like he was born in South West London so he will be Chelsea captain next season.

Of course, none of those things are going to happen but one deal that is being talked about is Juventus (and former Napoli) striker Gonzalo Higuain swapping Ronaldo for Ross Barkley and leading a new look Chelsea strike force. If Higuain did end up at the Bridge, where would leave the other random collection of Chelsea number nines? Michy Batshuayai isn't really being linked with anyone, not even West Ham

or Everton. Olivier Giroud is getting some interest from Germany, and not just from the ladies and nobody really knows what to do with Alvaro Morata. And it is not just Higuain getting closely linked to the club, oh no. Quesada Bowls Club Report

by Dee Stephenson Our Quesada member, Terry Morgan, has just returned from the 10 Nation Test Match which was held in Cardiff. Playing for the Spanish National team against teams from Australia, USA, Canada, Malaysia, South Africa, Wales, Ireland, Namibia and Jersey, the competition was the run up to next year’s Atlantic Championships, also to be held in Cardiff, where teams from 30 different countries will compete!

The Spanish National Team was represented by a mixed mens and ladies squad of 12 from all different clubs. The competition was extremely tough - not least because it was played on grass which is totally different to playing on the outdoor surfaces here in Spain.

In the Triples discipline, Terry Morgan played some hard fought matches with Julian Pering from San Luis and Derek Eldon from Javea. The team won the bronze medal, just losing in the semi final

to Ireland who then went on to win the gold medal. This was the only medal won

by Spain. Congratulations Terry, Julian and Derek.

Meanwhile, following the recent coaching sessions, members had an opportunity to put their new skills into

practice in the first match against Greenlands in the Friendship Cup. The competition is decided on overall shots from 4 matches.

There was a great atmosphere on the greens for this first evening match at Quesada. Although the teams won 3 rinks each, first blood went to Greenlands with a score of 95 to 88 shots. Theres a return match next week though, so Quesada will be working hard to pull back the deficit!

Finally, open to visitors, our popular Saturday morning Chicken Drive is continuing during the summer months.

Las Ramblas Golf Society Hola!

Monday’s result turned out to be a real family affair. We played the ‘counter’ game, which involves teams of four players,the twist being you don’t know how many scores to count until after the hole has been played. Taking

top spot, with 97 points, were husband and wife Alan and Olga Douglas together with their grandson Connah Judson. Making up the numbers was Bryan Neal. Connah, at the age of just 23 and playing off a 5 handicap, achieved an individual score of 42 points!

Wednesday’s result was even more spectacular. Our regular Stableford competition had the variation that all players went off the red tees (bet they won’t do that at Carnoustie)! With 48 points and surely a

new record, picking up the claret jug (well about 13 euros actually) was that man again, John Dobson. Worthy of an each way bet were Pedro Dunn, Rod Doel and Alan Douglas. Alan was also the only player to get a ‘2’ today and probably took home more prize money than our winner!

And so into the final round of the week…

Once again we are at Roda Golf. The course looks in excellent condition despite the weather. The greenkeepers must be working extra hard to keep the course in this condition. This month’s tee was later than usual at 10.32 with only three four balls playing this meant that there was only a gap of 24 minutes between first and last. Andy Trefry and John Dodds were playing the singles final for this year. Next month will see the doubles competition and it is hoped for a better turnout. As the day went on various

A hot humid day welcomed our players to El Plantio for the second round of our Summer Cup Stableford competition. A small group of 17 players tackled the 18 holes where the greens proved to be tricky for most players.

There were only 3 nearest the pins achieved out of the normal 4, well done to Lesley Cullen, Roy Harris and Geoff Ettridge.

The Silver Division was won by the returning Vic Smith with 36 points and the

comments were coming in about the heat even in a buggy, but nevertheless the day passed by with some excellent scores as you will see from the results below. Having collected all the cards we journeyed back to The Club at Quesada for an excellent buffet once more. Many thanks to Ian and his staff.

The Plaza GS The now infamous TPGS ventured out to the newly reformatted La Finca (well 2 holes have changed playing order, causing mayhem amongst some members)The course was as usual immaculate, and as usual seemed to have more than its fair share of flies!

NTPs were kindly sponsored by our spiritual home The Ale House Villamartin Plaza. The lucky recipients all receiving a €10 voucher well done Bobby Singleton, Dennis Noble, Deadly Dave Lethaby and Troy the boy who won twice. The 2’s pot was shared amongst 3 players Andy Shaw, Lee McWilliamson and Graham O’Clarke a lovely €27 each.

Best guest on the day was Roberto McDowell hcap 9 with 27pts, and best Lady was Deb Rose. As usual we present a bottle of Delicious Gama’s Finest Reserve Vino to the player who struggled slightly and Gordy once again leapt into action with 12pts!

So into the main prizes Alan Farter came 3rd in the Silver Division 29pts, Darrell McRose 2nd 30pts, but big Phil Sully romped home with 31pts (nice to see a

It would be fair to think that with few players on the course the round would play faster, alas this was not the case due mainly to the 4 ball (1 buggy and 2 walkers) that were directly in front of our 1st group. Who on earth would want to walk the course in these temperatures especially when the buggy is included in the green fee? Surprisingly there were some good scores but only Henry Steele really punished the course with his 39 points. Our 2’s pot was a rollover from last week and now contained €60 this was shared between J. Dean and a very young C. Arvesen shouldn’t a player need to be 18

CD Torrevieja Junior team beginning to take shape Earlier this week, the club’s management team headed by Juanjo Fernández and Joaquín Badimón, together with the coaching staff of the Junior team, which is made up of Moncho (Head coach), Antonio (Assistant coach) and Pablo (Tactical skills coach) met up with 75% of the squad that will make up the CD Torrevieja Junior team this coming season.

In this first big meet, the players got to find out firsthand what the short and medium-term plans are for the club, who hopes to train players to the standard at which they can then form part of the first team in the not-toodistant future.

The sport’s management and the Junior team’s coaching staff will continue to work tirelessly on a daily basis in training the youngsters. The basis of this training includes information, communication, organisation and teamwork.

CD Torrevieja has finalised

the deal to incorporate Eduardo José Julián Alarcón (Crevillente, 1995) to the club, after both parties reached an agreement. Edu can play in several positions including second striker, centre midfield, right midfield and even left midfield. His versatility, great technique and the fact that the opposition’s goal is always at the forefront of his individual strategy makes him stand out.

The 23-year-old originally from Crevillente trained in the junior teams of Elche CF but joins CD Torrevieja from 3º Division Crevillente Deportivo where he was the team’s Captain since joining them last season from FB Redován CF after Jornada 25, where he had spent a season and a half playing some of his best football. Prior to this, he had also spent two seasons with 3º Division Crevillente Deportivo.

Triple Tie at El Plantio 2 Golf Society A Joker competition was selected for El Plantio 2’s club day on Tuesday 17th July.

Everyone was allowed to pick two different holes as their 'joker' on the first and second 9 holes and scored double their Stableford return on those holes.

For the first time ever, there was a triple tie with the places decided on count back over the final nine holes.

Nearest the pins – Hole 1, Henry Mellor – Hole 6, Rod Loveday.

Third Place, Lawrence Wanty, H/Cap 8 – 42 points (19 C/B).

Las Salinas Petanca league

After another successful summer season playing in the heat, the Las Salinas Petanca league held their presentation dinner at the sunrise restaurant on Friday 13th July were over 100 people attended. In Division 1 Franco Belgas Justin eventually came out on top by just 2 points over Los Bandidos, in 3rd place were Franco Belgas Lucky. In Division 2 it was a very good season for Lakeside with the lions winning the league and the Hellcats finishing

runners up, in 3rd place were Los Altos Dragons. The 3rd Division was a very competitive league as the final results showed. Top of the league was Guardamar closely followed by Blagul in 2nd place and Amigos Belgas in 3rd place. As usual a raffle was held with the money going to our chosen charity at the end of next season. New players are always welcome in the league were there are many clubs to chose from

San Miguel Golf Society at El Plantio Some like it hot, obviously others don’t. A somewhat depleted squad of 22 members and 4 guests arrived at El Plantio, a consequence of some ex-pats opting to escape the heat of a Spanish summer for the cooler temperatures of Huddersfield, Souff London and all other points of the UK compass. The M.I.A.s (Missing In Action) lost out on playing a wonderful course at a very competitive price. Greens were excellent for this time of year and the fairways almost always rewarded a decent drive. Given the advanced tee positions and the tranquil conditions, high scoring was somewhat inevitable. Norman Cahill, who for months had boringly predicted that he
