Outdoor mask rules may be lifted this week

in many parts of Spain, the obligatory use of a mask outdoors will no longer be mandatory from thursday onwards, reports indicate. Spain’s Council of Ministers is set to meet today (tuesday) to approve a royal decree which would

effectively come into force two days later (thursday 10th February). the decree also increases the maximum capacity of indoor sports events and soccer stadiums.

While it is expected that starting

on thursday, the use of the mask will no longer be mandatory outdoors, it will continue to be a requirement at so called ‘mass events’ which are held outdoors and at which standing attendees cannot maintain a 1.5 metre

distance. according to the proposal that the Minister of health, Carolina darias, submitted to the interterritorial Council for approval, while the mask will not be mandatory outdoors, it will

continue to be necessary in closed spaces.

Likewise, in the event that there are crowds gathering in the open, its use will be a “recommendation”.

San Fulgencio opens a new dog recreation park San Fulgencio town Council has opened a new 916 m2 dog park for use by the public. From last Friday, pet owners and their animals can enjoy these fun family oriented facilities, located in what is known as Parque del Mossa, between Calle aragón, Calle San Sebastián and Calle Bilbao. it is a space “where dogs can run free and exercise safely,” said the councillor for animal Welfare, Mª Ángeles Ferrández. the area has been surrounded by a new 1 metre high perimeter fence, with built-in drinking fountains and the planting of trees, “so that it is a pleasant space for those who visit it during the hot months,” said the councillor. the park has an area for agility training, a sport against the clock in which the owner and dog take part and in which the pet must overcome a circuit with a series of obstacles such as ramps or tunnels.

For his part, the mayor of San Fulgencio, José Sampere, said that “we are delighted to finally be able to open this park, as it is a space and a service that has been in great demand by our citizens, where they will be able to spend time outdoors with their pets”.

Sampere also appealed to the public and called for the need to care for and conserve places

like the one opened today, as well as “following all the stipulated measures and making responsible use of it”. in this respect, access to the dog park will be in accordance with the regulations visible in several languages. it will be necessary to constantly monitor the animal while at the park, pick up its droppings, and entry with a muzzle is required in the case of dogs of dangerous breeds when there are more than two dogs inside the park

area. as the mayor reported, “it will also be forbidden for animals on heat to enter, access with any type of food, and under no circumstances will dogs that do not have their vaccination card up to date be allowed.” the gates will remain closed at all times, children under 16 years of age will not be allowed to enter without adult supervision, and if the animal becomes aggressive, it must be removed from the enclosure and placed on a leash and muzzled.

Four African elephant legs seized Guardia Civil officers from the nature Protection Service (Seprona) of alicante this week seized four african elephant legs that had been placed for sale online. officers are now investigating two men of Spanish nationality, aged 39 and 67, for a crime against flora and fauna which according to the Penal Code could be publishable with a prison term of six months to two years, alongside a fine. the penalty imposed could be the maximum allowed by law if, as in this case, the species or subspecies in question is categorised as in danger of extinction. according to official sources, the seizure of the items took place in the city of alicante. the owner of the parts of the african elephant – police described as a wealthy person – confirmed that “they were given to him a while ago and now he had decided to get rid of them” putting them up for sale for 600 euros, without any documentation “being a gift,” said the owner. upon seeing the advert, the Guardia Civil acted immediately as the elephant is a protected species. the men under investigation are related, the 67 year old identified as the owner and the 39 year old is believed to have placed the advert.

the elephant is a highly protected species, included in appendix i of the Convention on international trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CitES) and in annex a of Regulation (ce) no. 338/1997. For this reason, the possession and sale of species protected by international law requires documentation proving their legality. the Convention on international trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CitES) includes the african elephant as a species that has the highest degree of protection in order to improve its conservation and ensure long-term survival. the illegal trade in parts of the african elephant, be it ivory or, in this case, its legs, has a serious impact on the species and therefore the legislation that governs the marketing of species authorizes its sale only in exceptional circumstances in order to favour its conservation.

Guardia Civil say that the sale of animals in danger of extinction is a trade that is on the rise and for this reason the members of the nature Protection Service (SEPRona) have a mission to ensuring the survival of endangered species.

the obligation to wear masks outside was a controversial decision that the Spanish Government made just before Christmas, given the “uncertainty” of what the omicron variant could mean. Many experts criticised a situation which saw people obliged to wear face coverings outside, but could take masks off when, for example, sitting eating in a crowded restaurant. once the decree is approved, it will be published in the BoE on Wednesday and should come into force on thursday. however, in the Valencian Community, news emerged at the weekend that regional president Ximo Puig plans to maintain many restrictions until March and advises the continued use of the mask outdoors. Reports by Spanish news outlet aBC on Saturday claim that the regional government in Valencia does not plan to modify restrictions here despite the drop in figures over the previous week. Ximo Puig urges “prudence” and defends the continued use of face masks outdoors as a “fundamental antidote to overcoming the health crisis.” Given the regional president’s remarks on the matter, it is widely believed that the Valencian government will continue to recommend the use of the mask outdoors despite a widespread relaxation of the regulations around masks in the rest of Spain. the epidemiological situation in the Valencian Community shows a downward trend in infections and hospital pressure, although last week there were around 30% more deaths than the previous seven days. according to data from the Ministry

of health, the cumulative incidence in the region remains at very high risk but fell 643 to 3,380 positives per hundred thousand inhabitants, a thousand cases above the national average. other prevention measures are also expected to remain in force in the Valencian region, such as the limit of people per table – ten - in restaurants, hotels and nightlife establishments.

Likewise, smoking is not allowed on terraces if it is not possible to maintain an interpersonal safety distance of two metres.

Online equality course for primary students

the department of Equality of torrevieja town hall launched a unique initiative for primary schools in the area. the project is based on the traditional board game ‘La oca’ (Goose) but updated from a gender equality perspective. the idea is that the game can be used as an interactive teaching material to promote equality between women and men in terms of professions, activities, co -responsibilit y...all aimed at primary school students.

Participating schools will be provided with a link and an access code so that teaching staff can access the resources when needed. to sign up, the

school simply needs to get in touch with the department of Social Welfare of torrevieja town hall, at the email address igualdad@torrevieja.eu.

Councillor for Equality, tomás Ballester, remarked that “boys and girls have the right to grow up in an egalitarian society

where everyone can function fully. Equality between men and women is a value that must be internalized from childhood when gender identity begins to be formed. Boys and girls acquire in these early stages of their lives norms and values of a specific society: prohibited and permitted behaviours.”

“Coeducation, therefore,”added Ballester, “is a fundamental tool for achieving equality between women and men, and the school, as a space for socialization, is fundamental, together with families, in order to eliminate the perpetuation of gender roles that maintain inequalities and discrimination.”

More than 100 children audition for choir auditions took place for torrevieja’s Municipal Choral School at the Palacio de la Música last week. More than 100 children and young people queued up to audition for the initiative with auditions held last Saturday morning between 10am and 1pm. organisers said that a queue had already formed by 9.30am with many

children, accompanied by their parents, eager to pass the entrance exam. they also said they were delighted with the variety of both male and female applicants and that many children from outside of torrevieja were also keen to take part. those successful in the auditions will be called back

on Saturday, February 12, when classes begin for the much anticipated choir. after the municipal choir disappeared some years ago, the town hall has restarted the project thanks to an agreement signed between aGaMEd and the department of Education, with an investment of €14,192.

Town hall and Miguel Hernández University collaborate torrevieja town hall and the Miguel hernández university (uMh) have signed an agreement to collaborate, offering a series of educational programmes and courses until 2025. the mayor of torrevieja, Eduardo dolón, and the rector of uMh Elche, Juan José Ruiz Martínez, signed a collaboration this week, agreeing the implementation of a series of initiatives that will be developed over the next four years. the mayor highlighted the importance this agreement, stating that it was “a big mistake” on the part of the previous government to dispense with it. dolón pointed out that this brings about “very ambitious and necessary collaboration agreement for torrevieja students.” the price tag of the agreement amounts to 199,966.40 euros, which is broken down as a €49,991.60 per year investment.

With this agreement between the town hall and the uMh, for the first time there will be the possibility of certifying students in courses on active aging, something highly sought after in the healthcare sector in this region with qualified personnel very much in demand.

will also be on offer, something that is currently in high demand at a business level, as well as by entrepreneurs and with the rise in the ‘digital nomad’ culture. in addition, the agreement cements the creation of the torrevieja innova Program, directly linked to the Business Park of the Miguel hernández university, focusing on innovation and empowerment, offering training in the creation of startups, entrepreneurship, business management, economic management and more. the agreement also allows the recovery of the ‘Classrooms of Experience’, a popular programme that had disappeared several years ago.

in addition, there is a whole series of activities, courses, workshops, talks, conferences and resources that the uMh will roll out in torrevieja over the next four years.

Both the mayor and the rector of the uMh have agreed that this collaboration is the beginning of a process that will increase over the coming years. after the press conference, Eduardo dolón and Juan José Ruiz held a meeting in which the mayor showed the project for the future university headquarters, which will be located on the site next to the Sala Vista alegre, and in which, among others, the headquarters of the Miguel hernández university of Elche will be incorporated.

Rubbish collection investment a Local Waste Management Plan has been outlined for orihuela, this looks at the current deficiencies, provides a roadmap to improve and modernise of the service resulting in an investment of 20 million euros over the next six years. according to the councillor responsible, dámaso aparicio, as well as improving the efficiency of street collections, more effort needs to be put into the recycling aspect, as well regular awareness campaigns to educate and inform residents. in addition to improving efficiency, there are plans for each urban area, with more than 10,000 inhabitants, to have its own individual waste plan, which is a requirement of Spanish law. the law also states that “municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants must have door-to-door collections, together with a user identification system that allows economic and fiscal policies to be applied” although at the moment few municipalities comply. the orihuela project will introduce a trial scheme of a door-to-door collection service in homes, as well as a payment system so that residents will pay based on the waste that they generate. in addition, to adapting to the current regulatory framework, the plan also aims to modernise the service which will include the installation of sensors in waste containers so that the manager knows their status and collections can be arranged accordingly. the new arrangements will also introduce a video surveillance system at dumping black spots and waste tips. these will have motion

detection recording systems to capture registration numbers and notify the Local Police. there will also be a pilot scheme to test selective collection in orihuela Costa through a card identification scheme. another consideration is to set up an area to drop off bulky items and furniture in eco-parks - of which there will be two, one in the city and the other on the coast - and an area that allows for residents to exchange furniture or take unwanted pieces for up-cycling.

Rubbish bins in terms of resources, the plan establishes the need to increase the number of waste containers by 20 percent (currently there are around 4,000), in addition to renewing a further 20 percent due to their poor condition and implementing an annual replacement system. there will also be the introduction of a fifth container (coloured brown), which is used to recycle organic waste, as well as more machinery, vehicles and personnel.

all this, concludes aparicio, responds to the demand of our residents and balances the economic importance associated with the management of municipal waste. not surprisingly, the document itself recognises the fact that the majority of the population agrees on the need to improve the service, the number of containers and their cleaning and maintenance.

Mayor Emilio Bascuñana and Councillor dámaso aparicio, have already presented the Local Waste Management Plan to a number of municipal groups. however, the government’s coalition partner, Ciudadanos, did not attend the meeting, so now the PP is seeking agreement from the opposition parties to carry out this project. it must first go through the monthly council meeting before approval. the Partido Popular do not want this plan delayed as the waste collection and street cleaning service is currently based on a blueprint from 14 years ago.

Man imprisoned after drugs yacht sinks in Torrevieja a man has been sentenced to six years in prison after an incident which saw his rented yacht sink in torrevieja with 2.5 tons of hashish on board. two other men were also sentenced to four years and two years with charges related to smuggling. the men were also found to have hidden semi rigid boats in two Santa Pola warehouses. the case was heard at the Provincial Court of alicante where the man was sentenced to six years in prison for a crime against public health. he was found guilty of using a rented luxury yacht to transport around two and a half tons of hashish. the prisoner, who will also have to face two fines of more than four million euros each, rented this boat thanks to a skipper’s license provided by a second defendant, also sentenced in this hearing to a year and a half in prison as an accomplice to drug trafficking. in addition, the judge imposed prison sentences, of two and four years, on two other defendants, since they stored four unregistered high-speed semi-rigid inflatable boats in two industrial warehouses in Santa Pola. the characteristics of these high speed ‘narco boats’ as they are known are that the hull and control station have been modified without proper

registration, making them a completely prohibited type of boat and even possession of such a boat constitutes a crime of smuggling. the sentence condemns the owner of these boats to pay a fine of 890,000 euros. an employee of his, indicated as an accomplice, is to be fined 161,900 euro for collaborating in the storage and preparation of the boats.

Five other people were acquitted by the court for lack of evidence relating to charges of smuggling and concealment. the incident occurred on February 27, 2020, when the accused rented a pleasure yacht in torrevieja with which he went sailing together with another person, who was not prosecuted in this case. the court heard that the pair

loaded up to 86 bales of hashish resin on the ship, with a total weight of almost two and a half tons, which they intended to sell to third parties. however, the excess load and the choppy state of the sea that day caused the yacht to sink, and was rescued 15 nautical miles from the port of torrevieja. the hashish would have been sold for more than 4 million euros on the open market.

From the shipwreck in February 2020, an investigation was then launched that led to the seizure in an industrial estate of Santa Pola of four speedboats, two of them in the process of being manufactured and assembled, which were not registered in the Special Registry of operators of inflatable Boats and semi-rigid high-speed vessels.

Joan’s birthday gift to the poor of Los Alcazares on tuesday 2nd February Joan Mitchell the office Manager of hELP Murcia Mar Menor held her 80th birthday lunch at the tataki restaurant in Los alcazares with 25 of her friends as her guests. having decided that she did not want any presents from her friends Joan asked them to bring a bag of food each instead which would be donated to the poor of the area and the response was great.

the food collected was handed over to Joanne Scott from the Council in Los alcazares who will be able to ensure that it reaches the poor and needy of the area. Many of those attending the lunch were help Members and were pleased that they were able to help others in need. the local council and hELP are building up a good relationship which is hoped will be of benefit to all and help with the integration between Expats and the local Spanish population.

From the 13th of February onwards you can find them again every Sunday morning at the Paseo Marítimo (look for “Feria de artesanía, Jávea” in Google maps or go directly to https://goo.gl/ maps/phb3PsmSdjm.) amata, the regional craft association that organises this small but select craft fair, guarantees that everything is hand

made by the participants themselves - nothing imported, nothing factorymade, everything carefully and lovingly made by people who have chosen this way of life. and it shows!

Every Sunday morning, starting at 11 and finishing at 2 pm or even later, there will be people with soft and wooden toys, water colours, ceramics, some very original jewellery made from recycled beer tins or sea shells.

Rocajuna residents address security concerns Residents of the Rocajuna area of torrevieja met this week with the deputy Mayor Rosario Martínez, the Councillor for Security and Emergencies, Federico alarcón, and the Councillor for international Residents, Gitte Lund thomsen. Members of the Guardia Civil and Local police were also present at the meeting which had been requested by residents - mostly British people explained the town hall - to address security concerns. the issues addressed at the meeting dealt with the powers of each body (Local Police and Guardia Civil), security,

home occupation, traffic, emergency services and gender violence. the Guardia Civil took the opportunity at the meeting to explain which incidents can be dealt with and reported through the online portal of the Guardia Civil, as well as the operation of the aLERtCoPS app. the town hall said, “With these meetings, the City Council of torrevieja intends to bring the Security Forces closer to the citizenry and inform them about the issues that concern them and the ways to solve them.”

U3A back on the road the torrevieja u3a Walking/hiking group were back on the road on Saturday 29th January when they took to the hills for a walk through the saltwater dry river bed around San isidro. 26 members took part in the 10km walk, which was quite a challenging task, and took about 4 hours to complete the route. this was the first walk of the year and it is hoped that a similar number of walkers will attend the February hike which will be to the Murals in Crevillente.

Monday 1st February saw the first meeting of 2022 of the torrevieja u3a Military history Group at Punta Marina.

25 members attended and were treated to an informative and entertaining presentation which was provided by Shenagh who is one of the association’s members. the talk was on the subject

of the Roman era in the uK and detailed how their frontiers were established and why. after the talk the majority stayed on for a light lunch in the Captain’s table.

Boulevard event raises cash for cancer Maria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers held an all day event at Zenia Boulevard on Friday to mark World Cancer day – and raised total of €1903.52 including a donation of €500 from Zenia Boulevard management team. the event kicked off at 12.30 with live entertainment throughout the day presented

by Simon Morton from Sunshine FM and Leroy Morales. the entertainers donated their services free of charge and included: the dotty Band, Chloe Jones, alex tipping, Simon Jackson and Stevie Spit BEM. there was a minute’s silence at 2pm in memory of all those that lost their lives to cancer.

‘overwhelmed by people’s generosity and that they had booked 22 appointments on the

day for cancer screening tests,’ which is vital, as early detection saves lives.

Two injured in crash outside hospital a traffic accident on the CV-95 in front of torrevieja hospital left two people injured and the road closed for hours, after a truck and a car collided and overturned at 6.45am on Saturday morning.

Fire-fighters were called to the scene and had to cut the truck driver out of the cab. the driver of the car was also been injured, but was able to get out of his vehicle. Both were treated at the nearby hospital.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP there were two big stories for sterling to weather this week. neither came as a surprise and both had been fairly well priced into the pound by last weekend. the first was the longrunning “Partygate” battle about social events in downing Street during Covid lockdowns, and the prime minister’s prospect of remaining in office. to a large extent, investors remained agnostic on the matter, believing that, stay or go, the presence of Johnson is not essential to the general direction of uK economic policy. the second, and bigger deal, was the anticipation and realisation of the Bank of England delivering its second interest rate increase in as many months. as expected, the old Lady doubled the Bank Rate to 0.5%. there was a twist, though: in the 5-4 vote in favour of a 25-basis-point increase, the other four members of the Monetary Policy Committee would have preferred a half-point rise. although Governor andrew Bailey expects further increases to be necessary, he cautioned markets against getting carried away with expectations of rapidly rising rates. the GBP did move higher after the BoE announcement, but most of the work had already been done in previous days. on average, sterling is unchanged on the week. it is 1.4% higher against the uSd and down by 1.3% against the EuR.

EURO Where sterling had two major stories to contend with, the euro had just one, and even that seemed unlikely to have much impact ahead of the event. three quarters of an hour after the Bank of England revealed its rate increase, the European Central Bank was confidently expected to keep its key benchmark unchanged at 0% for a 71st month. Sure enough, the bank’s anodyne statement noted drily that “the interest rate on the main refinancing operations and the interest rates on the marginal lending facility and the deposit facility will remain unchanged at 0.00%, 0.25% and -0.50% respectively”. however, at her subsequent press conference, President Christine Lagarde put the cat among the pigeons with an unexpected u-turn. Where for the last year or more Ms Lagarde and her team have insisted that high inflation is transient, and not in need of central bank action, at this week’s meeting there was concern “across the board” in the Governing Council about another record high for inflation in the Eurozone. the ECB will still not “rush into decision” without “proper and thorough assessment”, but a rate increase this year can no longer be ruled out. the EuR’s reaction to Ms Lagarde’s comments was electric; it jumped a cent higher against the uSd in half an hour. on the week, the euro is an average of 1.2% higher because the interest rate outlook has changed dramatically.

Paul of Quardamar asks ”I have bought a new Smart TV, How do I set it up?” there are two main ways to connect your smart tV to the internet; wirelessly or with an ethernet cable. all Smart tVs have built-in WiFi and you should be able to connect to your home wireless network during the setup of your tV, or through network settings.

Connect any devices to hdMi if you have a set top box, game console or streaming device, plug it in to the one of

hdMi ports on the back right of the tV, or connect an antenna if you’re using one. you can also add any of these devices later.

Get to know your home screen Every smart-tV platform has its own unique layout, so take a moment to get to know your tV’s home screen. LG and Samsung tVs have very similar home screens, each with a single row of apps that runs along the bottom of the screen. Sony’s android tVs have several rows of apps, inputs and settings.

Connect your antenna Smart tV’s can have 1 or 2 coax connectors. Push fit for terrestrial tV via an aerial and a screw-on coaxial to connect to a satellite dish. during this set up choose your location as the uK get uK apps. the tV will detect the new signal and should automatically scan for channels. if not, you should be able to select Scan for Channels or something similar under the antenna-input option on the home screen. the system will scan through all of the possible channels, identifying every channel that has a signal.

Man arrested for stabbing partner and threatening a 4-year-old son national Police have arrested a man in alicante for allegedly stabbing his partner and threatening his four year old son with a knife. the police were alerted by neighbours and found the victim with a deep wound in one arm on a nearby street. the woman refused to admit that she had been attacked with a hunting knife, but witnesses confirmed that she had. a 32-year-old man of Pakistani origin was arrested and charged with assaulting his partner, stabbing her in the arm, as well threatening one of his three children, barely 4 years old, with a hunting knife. the victim, 55 years old and of Spanish nationality, was found with a deep cut on her arm. the

cut is thought to have severed a tendon but still, the victim denied having been assaulted by her partner. however, testimony from neighbours and two of the couple’s children proved crucial for the police investigators. officers arrested the alleged aggressor, who has a history of ill-treatment. the court released the man but issued a restraining order. after calls by neighbours to emergency services, police arrived and found the children crying and scared but the victim was not in the house. officers also observed many broken objects lying on the floor of the house and two of the three children told police that their father had cut their mother on

the arm with a hunting knife and that the broken objects were due to an argument they had had. the children also confessed to the police that their father urged them not to say anything at school because “it was all their mother’s fault.”

Man stabs and cuts hair of ex girlfriend Police this week were searching for the alleged perpetrator of a violent incident which took place in Petrer, a town in the alicante province. a 35 year old man from Elda is being sought, accused of attacking his ex girlfriend in the middle of the street. the victim, a 17 year old girl, is believed to have been attacked on the evening of February 1st, at around 8.30 in the evening. Eyewitnesses claim that the young woman and her ex partner began having an

argument which escalated until he is alleged to have grabbed her violently by the hair and dragged her across the ground while she screamed in pain. he is then said to have punched her all over her face and body and while she was lying on the ground crying, produced a pair of scissors from his pocket and began to cut off her hair before finishing by stabbing her with the scissors. Fortunately for the victim, the scissors had a rounded tip which prevented her from suffering more serious

injuries.

Several neighbours heard the girl’s screams and looked out their windows, shouting at the man who then fled. he ran away on foot at first but later jumped into a car heading towards the nearby town of Elda. Moments later, police and an ambulance arrived to help the victim. after initial enquiries, police were able to identify the man as a fugitive already on the run for months with a warrant out for his arrest relating to several crimes.

Police fight hate crimes Improved accessibility and discrimination for Orihuela Costa orihuela has created a new Local Police unit that will fight against hate crimes and discrimination. antonio Sánchez, Councillor for Citizen Security, detailed the new service, which is already in operation and is based out of the police station on Calle arriba in the heart of the city. this new unit is made up of two Local Police officers who will work to combat alleged hate crimes, cases of racism, LGBtQ phobia and any type of discrimination. these two officers have already received specialised training in this regard and will continue to be trained to ensure they are up to date with the latest approach. antonio Sanchez, said: “We want a freer, more respectful orihuela and where no one, neither because of their sexual orientation, nor because of their identity, or wherever they come

from, feels persecuted o r threatened, much less attacked.” h e explained that the new service is available to anyone who needs help, protection or simply advice. this unit joins the specialist unit addressing school absenteeism that was launched a few months ago and that is working tirelessly across the municipality and getting very good results.

the department of infrastructure, headed by Mayor Ángel noguera, has outlined a work plan for orihuela Costa to improve accessibility and mobility on public roads. the 100-plus projects will focus on areas with the highest footfall of people, such as accesses to public buildings, schools, town centres and shopping areas. the dangerous state of pavements, high kerbs, bins, benches and trees creating obstruction have all been a bone of contention for local residents and holiday-makers like in orihuela Costa for many years. this project will address these issues in key areas such as Villamartin, Playa Flamenca, Cabo Roig, los dolses and la Zenia. Outdoor use of masks defended the president of Valencia, Ximo Puig, has said that he is in favour of the mandatory use of a mask outdoors because “it is a symbol that the pandemic is among us”. this was stated in an interview this week after several communities have requested the withdrawal of this rule.

Puig stated that masks “have undoubtedly been one of the key elements to overcome the pandemic” and “the great protector we have had”, while insisting that the coronavirus “continues among us”.

Boost for Health Centres the Valencia Minister for health, ana Barceló, has presented a plan to improve access to healthcare in the region. She promised that between this year and next, health centres will receive 326 million euros for infrastructure, technology and

increases in staff. this increase in personnel will mean that 1,600 new professionals from different categories, including doctors, nurses, assistants and caretakers, will join health centres from april, which means an increase of 13 percent.

Benidorm Fest creates Spanish Eurovision entry Benidorm Fest winner Chanel Terrero will represent Spain at this year’s Eurovision Song Contest in Torino, northern Italy, after gaining the public’s and judges’ votes in an extremely closely-fought final.

The competition was staged in the popular resort by national television and radio broadcasting company RTVE and was this year’s route to selecting the artist who would be singing and performing for the country in the cult international pop contest. High hopes are pinned on the winner, as Spain, historically, comes home with very disappointing scores. It’s been around 60 years since Spain’s only Eurovision.

At Benidorm Fest Half the points would come from the judges’ votes, and the other half from the public, split between those given during a straw-poll among a stratified sample, and those received by text message.

The favourites ahead of the final were Rigoberta Bandini and Tanxugueiras, but Chanel Terrero, 30, was considered a complete outsider.

She finished comfortably ahead of her nearest rival, Elcheborn Blanca Paloma with her flamenco-style number, who just squeezed in front of Rayden, in third place.

Tanxugueiras was fourth in the judges’ votes, followed by Xeinn, Varry Brava, and finally Gonzalo Hermida – currently in forced isolation in a Benidorm hotel, but joining in the final via Zoom – and Rigoberta Bandini.

But Barcelona resident Rigoberta, 31 – born Paula Ribó and a voiceover artist since childhood – earned enough public votes that her final score, of 91, put her in second place overall behind Chanel’s 96.

The physical and television audiences were divided over the results, with many believing Rigoberta’s failing to reach the Eurovision to be a ‘missed opportunity’ for Spain, although Chanel’s lengthy experience in stage musicals may give her the edge in Torino this May – along with the high-quality authorship of her entry song.

Born to Cuban parents, Chanel was four years old when she and her family left their native Caribbean island to settle in Barcelona, and she was actively involved in sports and music throughout her childhood and teenage years, as well as taking acting and singing classes.

She has since performed on stage in shows of huge acclaim, such as Mamma Mia!, Flashdance, The Lion King, The Bodyguard, Nine, and as lead rôle in Malinche, the brainchild of Nacho Cano, one-third of the massive 1980s’ and 1990s’ cult pop trio Mecano.

Chanel even worked as a dancer around a decade ago for Colombian pop-rock megastar Shakira – long-term partner of FC Barcelona midfielder Gerard Piqué.

Dolores offers 15,000 euros in prizes A campaign with 15,000e of prizes has been launched in Dolores to encourage people to support local small businesses.

The aim is to alleviate the negative economic effects that the pandemic has wreaked on the town.

Shoppers simply have to save their receipts from now until 31st March and hand them in

to the Tourist Office. For each 10e spent, tickets will be place into an April draw for cash prizes ranging from 3,000 euros to 300 euros to spend in Dolores establishments.

Politicians meet with striking hospital cleaners José Aix, Deputy Mayor of Orihuela and spokesperson for the municipal group Ciudadanos, and Rosa García, Mayor of Benejúzar met recently with the cleaning service workers from the Vega Baja Hospital, who are currently on strike.

The president of the Vega Baja Hospital cleaning committee, Pilar García Albero, explained that “the last option we have is to ask the Vega Baja political parties for their help. It is the seventh day that we have been on strike and we haven’t had a single word from the Ministry.”

On meeting with the group Aix said, “We come to listen to them, as they have been complaining for weeks about the precarious situation they

are in.” He explained that “the management of the hospital centre is also looking for solutions, but they do not come”.

He continued, “We share the demands of the workers. We are concerned that at this point

in the pandemic, reference hospitals such as the one in Vega Baja and Torrevieja are dirtier and with more risks for the health workers who face

the health situation on the front line.”

Meanwhile, the Partido Popular in Orihuela will present a motion at the next council meeting in February that requests the support of their coalition partner and the opposition groups in calling for the dismissal of the Valencia Community Minister of Health, Ana Barceló. She is being held accountable for “the disastrous management of the health department that is being seen in the two health areas of the Vega Baja.”

The PP considers it absolutely shameful that the demands of workers in the Orihuela Hospital have been completely ignored, “showing that economic interests prevail over health.”

Rojales Pantomime Group... and Long John Silver NEED YOU! Even though their planned Pantomime, Treasure Island, will not now be performed until later in the year in December owing to various unforeseen circumstances, the members will still be enjoying the social side of the Group’s activities throughout the year and the cast are really looking forward to starting rehearsals again for this very funny and entertaining pantomime.

Some of the members of the Group not only enjoy performing on stage, helping in the wings, backstage or front of house at their performances but all our members are a very social bunch of people who enjoy lots of different events which are arranged by our very enthusiastic Social Secretary.

The Group are also very proud

that they have raised over the years thousands of euros for local charities, and we hope to raise more monies at our next performance.

Update for Rafal sports centre The Municipal Sports Centre of Rafal will soon have new changing rooms and storage facilities. The update to the sports centre was announced by the Councillor for Sports, Gabriel Valero.

The new rooms will be located under the current stands and will be adapted to current accessibility regulations.

Councillor Valero revealed, “they will have showers and

adapted spaces so that they can be easily used by people with reduced mobility.” The works will be carried out thanks to a grant of 41,959 euros granted by the

Provincial Council of Alicante and framed in the ‘+ Sport’ Plan for the construction, improvement, expansion or reform of sports facilities.

Victoria Beckham eats same meal every day for 25 years Brooklyn Beckham is big into his food – in fact he’s even got his own cooking series on Facebook. And we’re guessing he gets his love of all things food from his dad, David Beckham, and not his mum after hearing this…

David has revealed that wife Victoria Beckham has eaten the same meal every single day for the past 25 years. Every. Single.

Day. Speaking on the River Café Table 4 podcast, David said: “I get quite emotional about food and wine. When I’m eating something great, I want everyone to try it.”

“Unfortunately, I’m married to someone who has eaten the same thing for the last 25 years.

Since I’ve met Victoria, she only eats grilled fish, steamed vegetables. She’ll very rarely deviate away from there.”

But David did say she deviated from her usual meal once…

“The only time she’s shared something that’s been on my plate is when she was pregnant with Harper, and it was the most amazing thing.”

“It was one of my favourite evenings. I can’t remember what it was, but I know she’s not eaten it since.”

David also said he took on a cooking course when he was playing for AC Milan.

“When I was playing in Italy for 11 months, I was on loan at AC Milan. I’d train in the morning and in the afternoon, I decided to take a culinary

course in Italian cuisine. I absolutely loved it. I had a few private lessons and then it was in a class.

“But everyone was very focused on what they were all doing, so they weren’t even bothered that I was.”

Accidental food wonders It’s often said necessity is the mother of invention, but when you look at how some of our favourite foods came into being it seems curiosity, clumsiness and error is the most guaranteed formula. From 2000 BC to the present day, here are the products and dishes that nearly didn’t happen.

Chocolate brownies There are a few claims on the invention of the crispy-on-theoutside, gooey-on-the-inside creation that is the chocolate brownie. But the story favoured by many and cited in Betty Crocker’s Baking Classics, is that home economist Mildred Brown Schrumpf in Bangor, Maine was baking a chocolate cake and it deflated.

Champagne Champagne wasn’t always the epitome of good taste, it was once considered the result of shoddy wine-making. In fact, 17th century wine makers spent a lot of time trying to get the bubbles out of the fizzy drink.

However, eventually they grew to love it and when French monk Dom Pierre Perignon cracked the perfect formula he famously said “Come quickly! I am drinking the stars!”

Blue cheese Legend has it blue cheese was invented by accident when a drunken cheese maker left behind a half-eaten loaf of bread in a cheese cave. On returning, he discovered the mouldy bread had transferred to the cheese turning it blue. These days, it’s made under more controlled circumstances with specific bacteria.

Ice cream cones It was a moment of thinkingon-your-feet that led to the invention of the ice cream cone, which some might go as far as saying ice cream is incomplete without. It was at the St. Louis World’s Fair, in Missouri, in 1904, when Syrian concessionaire Ernest Hamwi decided to roll up some zalabia, which are crisp, waffle-like pastries, to help out a

neighbouring ice cream vendor who ran out of bowls.

Chocolate chip cookies In Massachusetts, in the 1930s, restaurant-owner Mrs Wakefield is said to have been baking cookies, and discovered she’d ran out of an ingredient so substituted in Nestlé semi-sweet chocolate. The cookies were thought to be so delicious, Nestlé provided Ruth with a lifetime supply of chocolate in exchange for being able to print the recipe on its packet.

Yogurt Central Asian herdsmen stored milk in containers made out of animal stomachs to preserve it while on the go. They noticed some of the milk became thick and tart due to the presence of good bacteria.

We’ve all heard advice that claims the best way to start your day is to drink a glass of lemon infused water. It’s hailed as a wonder drink that improves skin, helps weightloss and digestion, and even gets rid of kidney stones. But is it all it is cracked up to be? This week the Costa Blanca People takes a look...

What does the research say?

Used often as a home remedy, popular folklore attributes many health benefits to lemon water. The vitamin C found in lemons is definitely a powerful antioxidant. Mixed with hot or cold water, depending on a person’s preference, it is usually drank first thing in the morning. Often, people add mint, honey or even turmeric for additional benefits or flavour.

Nutrition Lemons are a rich source of vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant. Just one squeezed lemon provides around 21% of a person’s daily value. Similar to other citrus fruits — such as oranges, grapefruit, and limes — lemons are

Kidney stones Some studies suggest that drinking lemon water may help treat kidney stones. It appears to be most effective alongside conventional therapy, but it may also be a useful alternative treatment.

Kidney stones are a buildup of

minerals that collect in the kidneys.

They are usually made up of calcium oxate. The most common treatment is a compound called citrate.

Increasing the amount of citrate in the body prevents kidney stones from forming by stopping calcium from binding with other compounds.

Lemon water contains high amounts of citrate. According to a study carried out in 2015, numerous studies have found that citrus fruits, including lemon, can increase urine levels of citrate, which may help treat kidney stones.

A lack of water in the body is a common cause of kidney stones.

Drinking more water can therefore help prevent kidney stones, regardless of whether or not there is lemon in it.

Even taking the benefits of the lemon itself out of the equation, the water alone has numerous positive benefits.

Water can help with weightloss by boosting the metabolism and helping create a feeling of fullness. It can also optimise mood and memory and relieve constipation.

Support for expectant mothers at Torrevieja Hospital Torrevieja hospital announced this week that it is set to reactivate its breastfeeding support programme along with online preparation workshops for new mothers.

The Department of Health of Torrevieja has launched a series of online workshops to help women prepare for one of the most important moments of their lives, the birth of their baby, and also to manage the first months of breastfeeding and the typical care of a newborn.

Sessions take place every Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. To access them, pregnant women should ask their midwives for an access code that allows them to connect remotely via Webex with the team of midwives. In addition, the hospital is set to resume face-to-face breastfeeding consultations, aimed at mums who need help and advice.

In related news, Orihuela Costa health centre welcomes a new midwife who will see patients in the afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. To date, this health centre did not have this resource for local expectant mothers.

The Work of the ATGC Roadside assistance professionals often say that rescues are safer when the Guardia Civil is present. And those who have suffered an accident or had a breakdown during a trip surely agree.

This is the commitment to road safety presumed by those who have formed or are part of the Agrupación de Tráfico de la Guardia Civil (ATGC), whether they are motorcyclists or belong to a police team.

These are the two options offered by the Group to those who choose this specialty of the Guardia Civil, once they have passed the entrance exam, passed the course at the Baeza Guards and Non-Commissioned Officers Academy and a year has passed.

In addition, they must pass another training course – either as motorcyclists or for police officers – at the Mérida Traffic School (Badajoz).

Currently, the ATGC is made up of 8,656 troops, far from the more than 10,000 it had in 2009.

“More vehicles, more accidents, more roads and fewer personnel,” says Guardia Civil officer Garzón, a motorcyclist with the Group since 1992.

Those who are part of the ATGC like their work. “It’s gratifying because it’s nice to save lives,” says officer Álvarez, after almost thirty years as a motorcyclist. He says that he feels good when he helps people and sees their grateful face after helping them in a difficult situation. The most veteran members of the Association still remember that the patrols used to carry a toolbox with which they repaired minor car breakdowns on the same road (at that time, there was no roadside assistance as we know it today).

Roadside assistance is the main task of the ATGC. Every year they carry out more than 200,000 operations of this type. When an accident occurs, they care for the injured (until the medical teams arrive) and order traffic to prevent further accidents. They work quickly to remove obstacles from the road as soon as possible and minimise the so-called “peeper effect” (driving slower to see what has happened on

the road).

However, agent Álvarez admits that the eight hours he spends on the road each working day and the more than 200 kilometres he travels daily (if the day is not extended because something has come up at the last minute) are hard – they have three shifts in which they rotate: morning, afternoon, and

night–. On the one hand, he explains, there is inclement weather (rain, cold, heat, etc., depending on the season of the year). On the other hand, the danger of the work itself because, as officer Garzón points out: “Everything moves on the road”. “When you stop a vehicle for an infraction, you never know if it is a normal freight transport or if they are criminals who have just robbed a bank and are running away”, he says. According to what they tell us, another delicate aspect of the work of the components of the ATGC is when they have to go to court to give a statement for a road accident.

These two officers have accumulated many years of service and the occasional funny anecdote. “One day we were doing a breathalyser test. It was 9 in the morning and we stopped a driver who gave 1.1 mg/l, which is a

lot for that time of day. When we told him, we were surprised by his response.

He told us that he was the one who had drunk the least, that his companions had ingested even more alcohol”, says officer Álvarez.

However, despite the years and experience, the two agree that the hardest part is dealing with accidents with fatalities or serious injuries. “It’s very difficult to get used to it,” they say.

“When they see us on the road, they stop,” says officer Garzón. Stepping on the brake, dropping the mobile phone they were carrying in our hands or putting on their seat belts in a hurry. That is the instinctive reaction of many drivers when they come across a patrol, either on a motorcycle or in a car. Because many times when we see them, they think of the fine that we are going to give them if we catch them breaking any of the traffic regulations that guarantee the safety of everyone on the road. In fact, each year they make more than 1.5 million complaints (in 2016, for example, 2.1 million were reached).

In reality, imposing sanctions is only a small part of their work, although, they clarify, this task is also focused on prevention.

“Even when we impose a sanction, we also help security because we pay attention to avoid bigger mistakes,” says officerFalgueras.

The ATGC patrols are entrusted with many tasks, in addition to road safety (monitoring the roads and dealing with incidents): speed control with radar, surveillance with drones (teams made up of a pilot from the DGT and a camera operator from the Guardia Civil, plus the patrol that is notified to stop the offender and notify the infraction) and surveillance of heavy vehicles (trucks and buses, which are requested, for example, documentation, transport authorisation, etc. and their tachograph is checked –with rest and driving times–, wheels, belts, etc.).

Alcohol and drug controls are also common for ATGC patrols (they do not usually last more than an hour at each point because their location spreads very quickly through social networks and they lose effectiveness).

In 2020, for example, more than 3.1 million alcohol tests (with more than 26,000 complaints) and almost 50,000 drug tests (about 17,000 complaints) were carried out. If in that control, any driver tests positive for alcohol and/or other drugs, the vehicle is immobilised –if another occupant cannot drive it–.

In addition, in these controls other irregularities are usually detected, such as, for example, carrying the load incorrectly (without separation from the passengers, something that, in the event of sudden braking, can cause the death of any of them), poor state of tyres, an expired driver’s licence, etc.

Work at the ATGC changed radically during the pandemic and lockdown.

The controls on the road became “Covid controls”, that is, preventing people from moving from one place to another. However, in the ATGC, they admit that, in general, “people behaved quite well, respecting the limitations on mobility that were imposed” , acknowledges officer Garzón.

Tomato and Mascarpone Risotto

A sweet treat, perfect for a Valentine’s Day dessert or a surprise gift for a loved one. So easy to make! Even easier to enjoy...

A delightfully warming dish, perfect for a cosy Valentine’s night in

Ingredients 250g plain flour, plus extra for dusting 125g butter, chilled and diced, plus extra for the tin 1 medium egg 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped (optional) 100g jam, fruit curd or marmalade of your choice Method STEP 1 Put the flour, butter and a pinch of salt in a bowl and rub them together with your fingertips (or you can pulse these ingredients together in a food processor if you have one). When the mixture looks and feels like fresh breadcrumbs, stir in the egg and vanilla seeds, if using, with a cutlery knife. Add 1 tbsp cold water, then start to bring the dough together in one lump with your hands – try not to knead it too much. Add 1 more tbsp of water if it’s not coming together, but try not to add more than that.

Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 30 mins.

STEP 2 Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6.

Butter a 12-hole tart tin, then dust your work surface with flour. Unwrap and roll out the chilled pastry so it’s about the thickness of a €2 coin, then use a straight or fluted round cutter to cut out 12 circles, big enough to line the holes in the tin. Dollop 1-2 tsp of your chosen filling into each one and, if you like, cut out little pastry hearts (perfect for Valentine’s Day) and pop them on top.

STEP 3 Bake for 15-18 mins or until golden and the filling is starting to bubble a little.

Leave to cool in the tin for a few mins then carefully transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Ingredients 2 tbsp olive oil 1 onion , very finely chopped 1 large garlic clove , crushed 175g risotto rice 400g can cherry tomatoes 600ml hot vegetable stock 30g parmesan or vegetarian alternative, grated 30g mascarpone ½ small bunch of basil , chopped

Method STEP 1 Heat the oil in a large, heavy-based saucepan. Add the onion along with a pinch of salt, and fry for 10 mins or until beginning to soften and turn translucent, then add the garlic and fry for 1 min. Stir in the rice and cook for 2 mins.

STEP 2 Tip in the tomatoes and bring to a simmer. Add half the stock, cooking and stirring until absorbed. Add the remaining stock, a ladleful at a time, and cook until the rice is al dente, stirring constantly for around 20 mins.

STEP 3 Stir through the parmesan, mascarpone and basil, and season to taste. Spoon into bowls to serve.

Valentine’s Day Cocktail Ingredients 150ml cranberry juice 1 tsp grenadine 50ml vodka Handful of ice 1 lime wedge 4 raspberries Chilled prosecco or sparkling wine, to top up Method STEP 1 Mix the cranberry juice, grenadine and vodka together in a jug with a handful of ice. Or, do this in a cocktail shaker. Squeeze over the lime wedge and stir with a mixing spoon, or shake briefly if using a cocktail shaker.

STEP 2 Strain the c o c k t a i l into two champagne glasses. Drop two raspberries into each glass, then top up with prosecco or sparkling wine to serve.

The Scottish Cup (Quaich) is sponsored by our Scottish friends Chris Baillie, Alex Porteous and Donald Main, this is the first time since 2019 that we have been able to play this competition due to bad weather and of course the pandemic, unfortunately, Alex and Chris could not make the competition this year.

This was our first visit of the year to the very testing Hacienda Riquelme course which favoured the lower handicappers in group A. 24 players took part and on arrival we were welcomed by friendly staff who had everything ready and waiting for us. The course was still in the recovery stage from being closed since 2019 so fairways and greens were not up to standard for high season golf, the weather was a magnificent 25 degrees with pure blue skies so shorts for most players were the order of the day.The format was singles playing Stableford split into two groups with an overall winner.

Winner of “The Scottish Cup” (Quaich) from group A with a magnificent 40 points was “I love Putting” Craig Justham, runner up was Colin Deare with 34 points and third place went to, he’s back “Happy Hacker” Alan Martin with 32 points. Winner of group

Group A nearest the pins were hole 4 “5 Wood” Chris Houghton, hole 9 “Happy Hacker” Alan Martin and hole 15 “Sea Captain” Andy Godfrey, Group B nearest the pins were hole 5 “The Joker” Mick Billins, hole 10 “Keep it in the Family” Alan Ralph and hole 13 “6 inch?” Ian Birch, best front 9 went to “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden with 20 points and best back 9 went to “Flying Scotsman” Donald Main with 14 points. Thirty members, including a number playing for ‘Handicap’ and 3 guests competed for the Society’s Committee Trophy. The format was an individual stableford competition. The sun shone throughout the day and the wind was not too troublesome, most of the time.

Indeed the conditions were almost perfect for golf. That said however, many of the flags were placed in difficult to access areas of the greens.

This coupled with the invariably slick place of most of the greens made good scores difficult to achieve.We returned to Lo Crispin Tavern,as per usual, where quality Tapas was served by the ever helpful staff and the day’s prizes distributed.

Back to the magic of the FA Cup then - full of giant killings, upsets, shocks and more. Except, of course, the FA Cup 4th Round ended up with more Goliaths than Davids progressing, minimal shocks and the only upsets being the tears shed by Kidderminster as they were a mere 60 seconds (twice) from knocking out West Ham - because we all knew Middlesboro and Forest were going to win, right?

If we roll the clock back to Friday night, was that even much of a shock?

Ralf Rangnick might be the godfather of the modern game but he might have been better not rocking up at Old Trafford and protecting that myth.

Have United really been any better than before Ole’s sacking? Let’s be honest, Solksjaer was just as likely to have lost to Middlesboro on penalties and if it was ‘a lack of philosophy’ that did for the Norweigan what about the fact that Ralf is already sacrificing his principles after a mere month or so?

Rangnick arrived at the club to deliver high-intensity, attacking, modern football - all the United faithful have been served up so far is more of the same. At least you were able to get a pie and a pint at halftime when Ole was at the wheel, eh?

As mentioned, Kidderminster Harriers were twice less than a minute away from knocking West Ham out for the cup.

6th division Kiddy were the moral victors against the Moysiah’s highflyers. Moyes went with a strong starting lineup but were well off the pace in the intimate environment of Aggborough. Declan Rice was thrown in and it was he who scored the first heartbreaker in the 92nd minute - a

45-minute cameo that had people likening Rice to Steven Gerrard. For me, Rice is the nearest thing to Bryan Robson - without the injuries - and unfortunately for the Hammers’ fans they should enjoy him whilst they can.

With the penalty-taking order being decided, Jarrod Bowen tapped in at the far post to send West Ham through and Kiddy wondering what could have been - what could have been would have been an away tie at Southampton, incidentally.

Southampton nicked past Coventry after extra-time, Kyle Walker-Peters adding another goal to his growing collection.

FA Cup holders Leicester City crashed out away to relatively local rivals Nottingham Forest 4-1. Before the match, wise sages suggested that Brennan Johnson might cause England hopeful Luke Thomas a few issues, Keenan Davis might fancy it against the Leicester centre halves, Djed Spence might show why Spurs were in for him in the window and Forest might fancy a goal from a corner.

Those wise sages were bang on and the odds on Steve Cooper replacing Brendan Rodgers at Leicester must have plummeted.

Chelsea were Tuchelless and pretty toothless in their 2-1 extra-time win over League One Plymouth. Argyle even missed a penalty in extra time that could have seen them take the European Champions all the way. But, Kepa - who only ever seems to get mentioned when there is a penalty involved - saved Ryan Hardie’s ‘effort’ and avoided too many more red faces.

For a brief moment, Fulham dreamed big. They led Man City 1-0 thanks to a goal from the nearlysigned-for-Liverpool Fabio Carvalho.

Unfortunately for Marco Silva’s team, they scored a bit too early leaving City at least 80 minutes to sort it out. Sort it out they did, running out 4-1 winners.

4-1 was also the score in Chelsea’s Frank Lampard’s first game in charge at Everton. Lamps had spoken of reintroducing his new squad to the ball in a 180 degree flip from Rafa’s reign. Enjoy the ball they did as Richarlison continued his quirky little

run of scoring in the first game of a new manager - we know it won’t last.

Liverpool weren’t great against Cardiff, but they didn’t really need to be. New signing Luis Diaz came off the bench to create their second and Harvey Elliott returned from his big injury to score the third - and for the perfect weekend, they will hope Sadio and Mo got through the AFCON Final in one piece.

Crystal Palace killed off Hartlepool within 25 minutes - hardly worth getting the afternoon off, was it Jeff?

Norwich will hope winning FA Cup matches will help them remember to do it more often in the Premier League.

Their 1-0 win at Wolves was a bit of a surprise and their reward is getting a 5th Round tonking at Anfield.

Did Spurs have a good transfer window or a bad transfer window?

Either way, they got on with it beating Brighton 3-1 - Harry Kane getting a brace. Is this the point Tottenham fans start to dream of actually winning something?

The 5th Round draw has thrown up some interesting ties with the teams who got the most impressive wins at the weekend rewarded with a chance of humiliating a Premier League big boy. Luton Town, of the Championship, will welcome a Chelsea team probably done in from the Club World Cup and thinking about the return of the Champions League. Peterborough, managed by Darren Ferguson, will be up against Man City and you can already guess the narrative for that one. Chris Wilder will wave Antonio Conte into the Riverside whilst Dean Smith will hope King Klopp picks the kids again.

As for Forest? Well, they’ve knocked out Arsenal and Leicester so you just know they will lose to Huddersfield.

If you had forgotten there was a Premier League match on Saturday, you were luckier than those who remembered. Roy Hodgson’s return to management ended in a 0-0 draw at Burnley - a match whose scoreline categorically tells the story.
