Schools report skyrocketing cases Outbreaks of Covid-19 in schools have skyrocketed in the Alicante province since the Christmas holidays. Since the beginning of January there have been 161 ‘outbreaks’ (described by officials as episodes of multiple contagion) in schools across the various Alicante municipalities, which have affected 745 people in total. Shockingly, almost all of these school outbreaks
have taken place since 26th January, when they have become a daily occurrence. The first outbreak was reported on 15th January in Orihuela, with four children infected. Another followed in Benissa with three on the 19th and, from there, the outbreaks were being reported almost daily. By 26th January
151 outbreaks had been reported. The situation has intensified throughout February, particularly recently: last week 75 outbreaks were reported, totalling 312 cases. The avalanche of outbreaks in schools has gone hand in hand with the spread of the virus among the general population; it is therefore logical to a large extent that this escalation has occurred. However, it is cause for concern due to the scale of the outbreaks. The day with the most outbreaks reported was 11th February when 21 episodes were identified in schools, with a total of 72 infections. This increase in outbreaks in school environments has led to most of the multiple infection outbreaks detected so far in February in the province of Alicante - 115 out of 208. On Wednesday there were 13 outbreaks of this type out
of a total of 18, and on Friday 12th February the proportion was 17 out of 28 and it is believed that the Friday dip coincides with reduced social interaction due to municipal border closures. The drastic increase in infections in schools has so far not changed the protocol set out by Health and Education authorities. Classes continue to be provided normally, even in those towns and villages where incidence of the virus has reached the highest level in the province. According to the figures available at the time of going to print, in the Alicante province there are 279 school classes or groups currently in isolation, 1.7 percent of the total. There are 2,748 students with a positive test result and 2.2 percent of the school population is in preventive isolation. There are also 446 positive cases among teachers.

Seismic Network is modernised locally to better capture earthquakes The National Seismic Network has recently modernised the acceleration stations in Guardamar del Segura and Elche - in addition to the one in Cádiz. It has installed new latest generation instrumentation that enables the receipt of acceleration data in real time at the Centre of Data reception from the National Geographic Institute (IGN) in Madrid. These new accelerometers record the acceleration of the ground and can be used, thanks to their connection in real time, in the seismic alert as hypocenter location stations. They focus on the interior of the earth's crust in which a seismic movement is occurring by recording seismic phases. In other words, everything adds up and contributes to improving the location of the earthquake's focus as these are the seismic stations closest to the epicentres. Accelerographs are instruments that record seismic acceleration, velocity, and ground displacement. Accelerographs are useful when the movement of an earthquake is so strong that it causes the
most sensitive seismometers to go off-scale. The recent and continuous tremors in Granada have once again increased concern for these natural phenomena, which have also occurred on different occasions and with different intensity in the south of the province, especially the surrounding areas of Torrevieja. In fact, the National Centre for
Geographic Information reports that, for example, from 17th January to 3rd February of this year were two earthquakes recorded near Torrevieja, with a minimum magnitude of 1.3 degrees and a maximum of 1.7, and a third off the Torrevieja coast. The last earthquake of medium intensity occurred on 24th March 2019 off the coast of Cape Palos, where the IGN registered a 4.3 on the Richter
seismic scale. The National Geographic Institute explained that “the Guardamar and Elche stations make it possible to improve the location of common hypocenters east of Torrevieja." In addition, data can be incorporated immediately for shake mapping, or "shakemaps," of significant earthquakes”. The IGN Accelerometer Network currently has 128 stations spread over the areas with the highest occurrence of earthquakes in our country. Its records, of more than a thousand events since 1993, are frequently consulted by the scientific community for studies of seismic engineering and seismology in the near field. In the province of Alicante, in addition to Elche and Guardamar, there are also accelerographs in Pilar de la Horadada, Torrevieja, Elda, Benidorm and Alcoy. The most remembered earthquake in the province is the one that took place in 1829, which practically devastated the Vega Baja with special incidence in Almoradí, Torrevieja and Guardamar.

Proindependence parties increase Catalan majority Catalan pro-independence parties have increased their parliamentary majority following a regional election in which the unionist Socialists took the largest share of the vote and the far-right Vox party outperformed its conservative rivals to win its first seats in the north-eastern Spanish region. Sunday’s election was overshadowed by the Covid pandemic and dominated by the continuing debate over independence that has shaped and divided Catalan politics for the past decade. For the first time, proindependence parties took more than half the votes, winning 51 percent – up from 47.5 percent in the last regional election in December 2017. Between them, they now hold 74 of the 135 seats in the Catalan parliament, an increase of four seats. The Catalan Socialist party (PSC) finished first, winning 33 seats – up from 17 last time – and 23 percent of the vote. It was followed by the proindependence Catalan Republican Left (ERC), which took 33 seats and 21.3 percent of the vote, and the centre-right, pro-independence Together for Catalonia party, which came third with 32 seats and 20 percent of the vote. Vox, which is the third biggest party in the national parliament, won 11 seats, breaking into the Catalan
parliament for the first time and taking more seats than its rivals in the conservative People’s party (PP) and the centre-right Citizens party combined. En Comú Podem, the coalition that includes the regional branch of the far-left antiausterity Unidas Podemos, retained its eight seats, and the pro-independence anti-capitalist Popular Unity Candidacy won
nine. The poll was triggered last September after the region’s separatist president, Quim Torra, was banned from office for displaying pro-independence symbols on public buildings during the 2019 general election campaign. With the election over, attention will now focus on the formation of the new regional government. Torra hailed the results as a “resounding pro-independence victory”, while Laura Borrás, the Together for Catalonia candidate, said the fact that proindependence parties had won
more than 50 percent of the vote for the first time “has to have consequences for both the government and the parliament”. But Salvador Illa, the former Spanish Health Minister who ran as the PSC candidate, said he would seek to be invested as regional president, adding: “The meaning of my victory is very clear – it’s time to turn the page.” Spain’s Prime Minister, the Socialist leader Pedro Sánchez, tweeted congratulations to his former colleague. “Socialism has won the election,” he wrote. “Fantastic news for making change and reunion possible. Thank you, Salvador Illa, for giving us back the dream of forging a better future for Catalonia and Spain.” Jéssica Albiach, the En Comú Podem candidate, said she would speak to Illa and the ERC candidate, Pere Aragonès, in the hope of forming a tripartite leftwing government. Sunday’s election comes almost three-and-a-half years after the pro-independence regional government of the then president Carles Puigdemont pitched Spain into its worst political crisis in decades by defying repeated warnings from the Spanish government and courts to stage an illegal, unilateral independence referendum.
Most popular towns in each Spanish province revealed Study reveals the most popular small towns in each province within Spain As result of the Covid-19 pandemic, domestic tourism within Spain experienced a notable growth during 2020, predicted to continue in 2021. Whilst some chose to rediscover their cities of habitual residence, many others sought out small paradises, away from the hustle and bustle. To find out the most popular destinations, Musement, the digital discovery and booking platform for travel activities and experiences around the world, analysed Google search data for the term “que ver en (translation: what to see in) (municipality)” for all Spanish municipalities with fewer than 20,000 inhabitants. With the results, Musement has produced a map highlighting the most popular towns in each Spanish province*. From pretty seaside villages with colourful balconies to historic mountain towns with medieval architecture, Spain is a country with so much to offer. And whilst it may be too early to pack your bags, a holiday within Spain is a far more likely choice for locals and foreign residents alike this year (once regional border closures and Covid restrictions are lifted). So, if you’re looking for
Guadalest
inspiration for your next Spanish getaway, far from the big cities and popular beach areas, then this map is a great place to start. Among the most popular towns, the beautiful coastal town of Peñíscola in the province of Castellón is the most googled, accumulating an average of 74,000 monthly searches, and 3,600 searches for the term “que ver en Peñíscola”. Not the only coastal town to conquer the nation’s hearts. Llanes, the beautiful fishing village in Asturias, or Hondarribia (Guipúzcoa), with its unique and colourful balconies, both receive a high number of search volumes from people looking to visit. For those who prefer to visit smaller towns with a lot to offer, Guadalest (Alicante), Pedraza (Segovia), Miravet (Tarragona) and Medinaceli (Soria), are ideal
destinations, since they have populations under 1,000. For mountain lovers, the towns of Jaca (Huesca), Cervera de Pisuerga (Palencia), Albarracín (Teruel), Cazorla (Jaén) or Lerma (Burgos) are destinations that allow you to combine culture with activities in nature. There are also towns on the list with plenty of history and mysticism. From Garachico in Tenerife, which was completely buried under lava after a volcanic eruption in 1706, to the town of Consuegra (Toledo) where Don Quijote rode through in Cervantes’ classic novel, and the village Trujillo (Cáceres) where Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro was born. Man posted photos of women on adult site before posing as Interpol officer to ‘help’ Alicante man arrested for posting hundreds of photos of women on a pornography website before later trying to help the victims by posing as an Interpol officer. National Police arrested in 33-year-old man accused of publishing photographs and personal data of hundreds of women on an adult website with pornographic content. According to the General Directorate of the Police in Alicante, the accused posed as an Interpol agent and concocted elaborate stories of foreign mafias and threats to trick and coerce the women. The investigation began earlier this year when officers from the technological crime division of the Alicante Police learned of several similar complaints in which the victims said that their photographs had been published on an adult website. The similarity in modus operandi made the agents suspicious that the events could be related. In all of the cases, it was found that the victims were users of dating websites, where they had published photographs of themselves. Some of those photos, along with their personal data, were found reposted on a pornographic
webpage where it was claimed that they were prostitutes. Soon after the victims discovered their photos on the adult site, a man claiming to be an Interpol agent, contacted them through social media. He led them to believe that they were in danger and that foreign mafia gangs were using their photographs, and that they could come to great harm. Taking advantage of their fear, he asked to make an appointment in person with them to glean more information for the so called investigation. Investigators found out that one of the victims had met with this alleged "agent" in a wooded area of the Castillo de Santa Bárbara, where he took intimate photographs with the excuse of checking that she had no marks or scars and thus verifying that the photos on the internet were hers. The victim, confident that this man was truly an Interpol agent and was going to help have her photos deleted from the site, later received a call from him, threatening to publicise the images. Researchers who analyzed the content of the web page where the images were published, located almost 1,200
Four arrested for posting drugs to UK
National Police this week arrested four people believed to be members of a drug trafficking ring which grew and then sent marijuana by post to the United Kingdom. Those arrested were directly in charge of growing and exporting marijuana in parcels sent by post. The operation relates to the arrest of the leader of the criminal organization, carried out last year, and who is a known Irish criminal. The investigation began in 2019 when police became aware of a gang sending packages of marijuana by post. As a result of collaboration with international police
forces, the organization's members were identified and, at the end of last year, the gang leader – a well known Irish criminal – was arrested in Torrevieja. After his arrest, investigators continued surveillance and located the rest of the criminal network. Those arrested had specific roles within the organization. One was in charge of the marijuana cultivation and had installed a hydroponic growing system inside his home. Another detainee made the arrangements with buyers in the United Kingdom and, finally, the other two were in charge of posting the drugs.
photographs of more than 700 different women, many of an intimate nature. The police were able to identify some of them and contact them to let them know, as well as alerting them to the possibility that the alleged perpetrator would contact them. One of the women, who had been informed by police that a man might be in touch, contacted investigators to notify them that a man had indeed contacted her and made arrangements to meet at the same wooded area where investigators knew he had already met another of the victims. Officers, knowing his intentions, established a surveillance operation in order to locate and capture the man. After his arrest, police conducted a search at his home, where a quantity of computer equipment such as hard drives, telephones and laptops were seized, as well as videos of other victims and the false Interpol credentials that he used to make his victims believe that he was a legitimate officer. The detainee, accused of an crimes against privacy and moral integrity, threats and usurpation of public functions, was placed at the disposal of the Court of Instruction in Alicante.

Airlines make more covid cancellations Despite the local economy being desperate to see the return of tourists, businesses may have been scuppered over any plans for an Easter boom as low cost flyers cancel more flight. Jet2 has cancelled all Spanish flights and holidays until 14th April, having previously suspended flights until the end of March. However, with international restrictions showing no signs of lifting, it has now decided to cancel all flights until 14th April. Therefore, anyone who wanted to travel at Easter will be disappointed. Brits are currently not permitted to travel for leisure purposes and there is no indication of how long the tough restrictions will continue or even if people will be able to travel to Spain in the coming months. Ryanair has been cancelling flights on-and-off since the summer and it looks like the
new schedules aren’t safe either; as they are been constantly adjusted and flight cancelled leaving passengers frustrated. The Jet2 announcement has added to the misery for second-home owners and those hoping to see friends and family so flight options dwindle. In a statement posted on social media, Jet2 said: “Due to the ongoing uncertainty and travel restrictions caused by the Covid19 pandemic, we have taken the decision to extend the suspension of flights and holidays up to and including 14th April 2021. “Where customers yet to travel are affected by any programme changes, our industry-leading and prompt refunding of over 1 billion pounds has been widely praised, and we will continue to automatically cancel affected bookings with a full refund.”
Anyone who has a pre-booking from 15th April onwards will be contacted by Jet2 nearer the time, once it has decided on a course of action depending on the epidemiological situation in the UK and destination locations. This comes hot on the heels of the British Government’s decision to implement mandatory hotel quarantine for travellers from 33 high risk countries. Those travelling to the UK form the hot 33 will be obliged to pay £1,750 for the 10-day quarantine and two PCR tests. Those travelling from Spain are not currently being subjected to the hotel quarantine but will be required to self-isolate at home for 10 days and also provide two Covid tests. The new moves leave people even more uncertain about booking flights only to have them cancelled.

Ballistics report on Gilligan’s gun ‘inconclusive’ The ballistics report carried out on a revolver found buried during the arrest of convicted Irish criminal John Gilligan did not clearly indicate whether, as Spanish police initially thought, it was the same weapon used in the murder of Irish journalist Veronica Guerin in 1996. The ballistics report says that "with the means, evidence and indications" available to the National Police "it is not possible to write a conclusive expert report that affirms that this firearm is the one used", despite the fact that at first, police thought it to be the same gun, a Colt Python revolver from which six shots ended Guerin’s life. Gilligan, the main suspect in instigating the fatal shooting of Veronica Guerin, was arrested in Torrevieja along with other members of his criminal
organization last October, for the alleged trafficking of narcotic substances and sending him to the United Kingdom by post (see report on page 3 for the conclusion of the police
operation). After serving 17 years in prison, the 68-year-old Irish gangster fled Ireland after attempts were made on his life, including the fatal shooting of his bodyguard.
Local Police in Redován seize counterfeit footwear and clothing Police officers on patrol at the weekly local street market in Redován on Sunday morning seized several counterfeit sports clothes, which were found on sale on one of the stalls. The seized items amount to nearly a hundred pairs of tracksuit bottoms, 5 sweatshirts and 38 pairs of
imitation sports shoes from brands such as Nike, Adidas, Reebok and Chanel. The garments were seized and transported to the police station where they will be stored and used as evidence to initiate the relevant legal actions against the vendor.

Covid changes consumer habits Consumers in Spain are moving more and more towards electronic payments at the expense of cash, with mobile phones increasingly used, according to recent research. A year ago, 87 percent of people in Spain were still using cash for their daily purchases rather than cards or electronic methods, and 68 percent of money spent was in notes and coins, compared with 79 percent and 54 percent on average in the Eurozone. But by July last year, after five months of the pandemic and concerns about disinfecting and avoiding surface contact, card payments overtook cash for the first time in Spain's history – rising to 54.1 percent compared with 45.5 percent of transactions in notes and coins. Even before the pandemic, a total of 48 million debit cards and 37 million credit cards were in circulation in the country, and ATM withdrawal use was at a record low in terms of frequency. Actual withdrawals were generally much higher, although they were made much less often, with speculation arising that Spain might eventually become a cashless society. Now, this is looking set to be a reality, according to the financial services provider and market researcher Pecunpay in an investigation commissioned by Visa. The inquiry, titled ‘A Study of Mobile Phone Payment Trends in Spain’, reveals that prior to the pandemic, a gradual
rise in non-cash methods was becoming evident. Mobile payments, whilst still very much in the minority, were increasing. And in 2019 alone, Visa debit and credit card issue in Spain soared by 150 percent, and the company's customer portfolio expanded tenfold – a situation that may have been largely due to banks nationwide adopting procedures in line with new criteria introduced in January 2018 to comply with a European Union directive on card payments, making this easier and cheaper and thus allowing smaller businesses to accept them, either for the first time or for lower amounts by reducing or eliminating their 'minimum transaction' threshold. A year on from the first few cases of Covid-19 being reported in Spain and 11 months after it first went into lockdown, reports show how cash is not the preferred payment
method for 78 percent of consumers. The Visa study involved a survey of a stratified sample of 2,000 people, with one-third – 34 percent - saying they used their phones to pay, although only 12 percent of the total said this was their go-to method. Just 22 percent said they preferred to pay in cash, compared with 60% who opted for card payments wherever they had the choice. Of those who say they use their phones for payments in shops, bars and other establishments, barely 7 percent said they did so all the time – at least, where this method is accepted – and just 11 percent said they did so 'often', compared with 16 percent who said they only paid with their mobiles 'sometimes'. Two-thirds of those who used their phones to pay admitted that they have done so far more often since the start of the pandemic.

The Generalitat and hostelry will negotiate reopening The Generalitat of Valencia and the hostelry industry will begin to negotiate the way in which they will begin to reopen the establishments once the current restrictions are lifted. The Department of Universal Health and Public Health has reported the creation of a working group with the leisure sector to collect their proposals and take them into account for the next deescalation plan. The first contact is scheduled for today, Tuesday, 16th February at 4.30 p.m., and will be attended by the Minister of Health, Ana Barceló, and the regional secretary for Tourism, Francesc Colomer, along with representatives of the sectors involved. Health sources have indicated that the objective is to "analyse and plan the measures that the
next de-escalation plan will include", and create "a work table so that future deescalation proposals can be collected, debated and considered. Hostelry is the economic sector that is suffering the most from the effects of the pandemic." The industry in the entire Valencian Community has been closed since last 21st January, except for very specific exceptions such as orders to take away or at home delivery, or in the service areas of travel routes. In the towns that were confined to the perimeter between 6th and 20th January, the establishments were already closed. This is the case in the province of Alcoy, Castalla and Polop, whose bars, restaurants and cafeterias have already been unable to open for more than a month.

Mayor confirms that trees at Doña Sinforosa Park will not be touched News articles emerged last week claiming that trees in Torrevieja’s Doña Sinforosa Park would allegedly be cut shorter in order to provide a ‘view’ to those in the new skyscrapers planned for the area. Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, was keen to confirm that the trees are not going to be altered. A mandatory part of the project, explained the mayor, is that the green area is actually improved and the study explicitly states that the developer is subject to the condition of preserving the unique large trees in existence at the site, all of which must be carried out under the supervision of the technical department of the Town Planning Service of Torrevieja City Council. An illustrated section of the
plan shows an overlay projection of what the area will look like

Orihuela agrees to 952 Orihuela to Madrid rail new homes on the Costa link targets tourists The Urban Planning Department of the Orihuela City Council has put on public display the preliminary version of the partial plan of Sector B-1a "Mil Palmeras," which will urbanise 159,000 square meters of land with the capacity to accommodate 952 new homes in one of the few undeveloped areas of the Orihuela Costa. The area is located between Campoamor to the north and the Oriolana part of the Mil Palmeras urbanization to the south. It is bordered by the N-332 and the Barranco Rubio and Cañada Hermosa. The urban planning lawyer who signed the sustainability report, Juan Enrique Serrano, said the plan "is totally and completely sustainable and economically viable", both for the company that intends the proposed urban planning program "and for the Orihuela City Council and the municipality where it is planned”. The report details the annual cost for a local administration to maintain a mediumsized urbanization such as the one proposed in which a maximum of 2,887 inhabitants is estimated, with a permanent occupation of 20 percent and 80 percent seasonal occupation. The implementation of services and annual maintenance after receipt of the urbanisation, would mean an annual cost of 218,333 euros (street cleaning and waste collection and maintenance of green areas), and the annual periodic income to be collected by the local public
administration, after the proposed development would amount to 545,249 euros – taking into consideration the first accrual taxes, such as ICIO or IBI, among others, which would amount to 1,736,157 euros. In addition, the developer already anticipates the sale of the 10 percent municipal mandatory transfer by the City Council, which it values at 7,114,711 euros for a plot of about seven thousand square meters. The cost of urbanisation of the land exceeds 11.6 million euros - of which one million are benefits for the developer. The new urbanized area will also need 183,000 cubic meters of drinking water per year. The economic sustainability study was incorporated as mandatory in urban planning legislation in 2007. It was introduced ‘as a measure of political prudence that limits the discretion of the planner forcing him to approve plans based on an informed forecast of social demands and therefore avoiding urban actions of excessive and disproportionate dimensions. This ensures that new developments satisfy the needs of present generations without compromising the needs of those in the future’.
Orihuela City Council has approved a collaboration agreement with rail operator Renfe that aims to jointly promote Orihuela as tourist and business destination in light of the new high-speed rail link between the city and the Spanish capital Madrid which takes around just 2.5 hours. The Councillor for Tourism, Mariola Rocamora, said: “Our municipality has a lot to offer and we have added a new way to promote it, something fundamental especially now that the AVE has arrived in Orihuela." Renfe will publicise Orihuela through different areas on its trains, such as themed headrests and promotional videos of the municipality. It will also promote vacation packages that include the train and other accommodation, leisure and culture services.
The Orihuela City Council, for its part, will publicise Renfe's services as a means of transport in all activities of a general nature that it carries out for the promotion of tourism or business in the city of Orihuela. In addition, it will incorporate in the Tourist Information Offices, publications, brochures, timetables etc for Renfe. The two bodies will also carry out various joint promotional actions, both offline and online. This agreement is valid for two years, extendable by agreement between both parties. "The commitment of the Department of Tourism and the City Council of Orihuela in promoting the city is firm and we are convinced that this type of promotion will make our municipality reach many travellers and visitors," said the Councillor.

Orihuela will represent Spain at the Shanghai International Expo Orihuela will be taking part in the 10th China International Expo “Blossoming Chinese dream", which will be held on the island of Chongming, Shanghai, from 21st May to 2nd July, 2021. Orihuela Mayor Emilio Bascuñana has highlighted the importance of “having a pavilion at this fair, being able to talk about the Orihuela orchard and present all the wealth that our municipality and the region have, giving the agri-food sector the opportunity to open new markets. We are the only representation that Spain will have and Orihuela will be with other renowned European cities”. Mayor Bascuñana Said: “This opportunity is a great responsibility because we are promoting and representing Spain. We place ourselves at the disposal of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Generalitat so that this opportunity can be taken one hundred percent.” Victor Valverde, Councillor for Commerce explained how his department had to step on the accelerator so that ‘our city was chosen. As a result of being shortlisted, they asked us to design the stand. This went to an evaluation committee where we had to compete with other cities in Spain and finally on 18th January they told us that Orihuela was going to have a presence at that fair and also at no cost to the city council because the construction of the pavilion is

carried out by the organisation". The Expo is the largest and most relevant national flower event in China with an area of 10 square km. The presence of our city will be visible in a 500square-meter outdoor garden-pavilion in the Shanghai International City Park. The organization expects to receive three million visitors during the days of the event. "The design of the stand spoke of the fact that the design aims to bring the garden of Europe closer to the garden of Orihuela not only with the visual appearance but also with touch and smell. The idea is to bring life to the stand by bringing seasonal fruits and vegetables and we hope to hold a meeting with businessmen from China who are willing to do business with
businessmen from Oriola with economic and employment promotion expectations,” Councillor Valverde said. Finally, Daniel Li pointed out that it has been “a difficult job in times of a pandemic. This fair is considered in China as the Olympiad of the sector. In addition to the most important Chinese cities, Orihuela will share space in the event with Jeju (Korea), Auckland (New Zealand), Zuid Holand (Netherlands), Vanuatu (Fiji), Quebec (Canada), Or Tambo (South Africa), Richmond and Liverpool (Great Britain), Genoa and San Remo (Italy) and Petah Tikva (Israel). Starting today, we work to hold meetings with businessmen from Orihuela so that they take advantage of the opportunity to open a market in China. "
WHO advises Spain not to relax coronavirus restrictions too soon While several Spanish regions ponder whether to start easing coronavirus measures due to a recent drop in infections, experts at the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday warned against lifting restrictions too soon. During an update on the Covid19 situation in Europe, senior emergency officer Catherine Smallwood insisted on the importance of bringing transmission down, warning that the longer the virus is in circulation, the better it could adapt to humans and develop new mutations. “A relative decrease does not mean transmission rates are low. In Spain we’ve seen a very significant relative decrease, but transmission rates remain very, very high, and the more the virus is among us, the quicker it’s going
to be a step ahead of us. So in that sense we really do need to be careful,” said Smallwood, replying to a question from a reporter from the Catalan News Agency. In Spain, the 14-day incidence rate is 584 per 100,000 people, down from a peak of 900 in late January but more than twice the threshold considered an extremerisk scenario. In the Valencia region, the rate is currently 879 per 100,000. “I think the risks of opening too soon have been made clear in several countries and across Europe after the summer holidays, when we saw a relaxation of measures and quick movement back to business as usual and a false sense of security,” added the WHO expert. “That was quickly corrected by a significant resurgence of cases in the autumn that presented very big
challenges to many countries. This virus will take advantage of any chance we give it to rapidly spread, and it will spread much more rapidly than we think; the curve will go up very steeply and will come down pretty much slowly, and every time we lift a restriction, every time we open part of our society, it will shift the balance in favour of the virus.” Facemasks The Ministry of Consumer Affairs will introduce tougher conditions on the sale of hygienic facemasks. The only ones allowed to go on sale will be those tested by accredited labs, and there will be new labeling requirements. For the first time, there will be rules regarding facemasks with a see-through area allowing the mouth to be seen.

Four additional symptoms of Covid to watch out for Scientists have identified four additional symptoms of Covid-19 to look out for. Most of us already know by now that the main symptoms of Covid include losing your sense of smell and taste, a high temperature and a new, persistent cough. New Information has emerged following a study of more a one million people in England. The study revealed four further symptoms of the disease. They are: • chills • a loss of appetite • headaches • muscle aches This latest research is based on swab tests and questionnaires collected between June 2020 and January 2021 as part of a comprehensive ‘React’ study carried out by Imperial College London. Researchers also found that there is a variation in symptoms according to different age groups. Experiencing chills were linked with testing positive across all age groups, headaches were reported in young people aged between 5 and 17 and loss of appetite was reported more frequently in 18 to
54 year olds and in those aged over 55. Acheing muscles were mostly reported in people aged between 18 and 54. 5 to 17 year olds were also less likely to report fever, a persistent cough and appetite loss compared with adults, according to the research. Around 60% of participants
who had coronavirus did not report any symptoms in the week leading up to their test. With this new information, researchers estimate that if everyone who had the so called ‘classic’ symptoms were tested, it would only pick up around half of all symptomatic infections. The team also said that if the additional symptoms were
included, this figure could be improved to pick up threequarters of symptomatic infections. In the past, doctors have also warned people to look out for a rash and an upset stomach. Professor Paul Elliott, director of the React programme at Imperial College, said: “These new findings suggest many people with Covid19 won’t be getting tested – and therefore won’t be selfisolating – because their symptoms don’t match those used in current public health guidance to help identify infected people. “We understand that there is a need for clear testing criteria, and that including lots of symptoms which are commonly found in other illnesses like seasonal flu could risk people self-isolating unnecessarily. “I hope that our findings on the most informative symptoms mean that the testing programme can take advantage of the most up-to-date evidence, helping to identify more infected people.”

Princess Leonor to study in Wales The heir to the Spanish throne, 15year-old Princess Leonor, is going to study in Wales, the Spanish royal household said in an announcement that caused a commotion over the state broadcaster’s reporting. Leonor de Borbón, the eldest of King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia’s two daughters, will attend UWC Atlantic College, based at the 12th century St. Donat’s Castle on the southern Welsh coast, a statement from the royal household said. Leonor will begin her two-year course at the boarding school this summer. She turns 16 at the end of October. Her parents will personally meet the course’s cost of 67,000 pounds ($92,700, 76,500 euros). The royals are this year receiving more than 8.4 million euros ($10.2 million) from the state budget to maintain their household. The Spanish royal family has been at the centre of a controversy in recent years over the conduct of former monarch Juan Carlos, Leonor’s grandfather, whose financial affairs are under investigation by magistrates. He went to live abroad last year to relieve the pressure on the current king, his son. The news about the princess
caused a rumpus at Spanish state broadcaster RTVE, which issued an “urgent statement” after an onscreen headline reported that “Leonor is leaving Spain, like her grandfather.” RTVE “deeply regrets the grave mistake,” the statement said, promising those responsible will be “relieved of their duties.” The school, for students ages 16-19, has 350 students and was established in 1962. Princess Leonor obtained admission to the school anonymously, taking several tests before being accepted, the royal household said. Scotland makes Spanish arrivals pay for hotel quarantine
From yesterday, Monday 15th February, all arrivals to Scotland must pay for hotel quarantine. All arrivals to Scotland from outside the Common Travel Area must book and pay for managed isolation in quarantine hotels to help protect against the importation of Coronavirus (COVID-19). Six hotels close to Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow airports with a combined capacity of 1,300 rooms will be used to implement the quarantine at a cost of £1,750 per individual traveller. Final costs for those not travelling alone are currently being worked through, as well as the details for a Managed Isolation Welfare Fund which will be launched for those who cannot afford the charge. All arrivals must quarantine for
at least ten days and will be tested twice for the virus – once on day two and once on day eight after arrival. Existing travel exemptions will be strengthened, including limiting overseas training for elite sportspeople, athletes and coaches preparing for the Olympics and Paralympics. A small number of arrivals will not be required to isolate, such as those involved in essential supply chains for goods coming into Scotland. As regulations to support the introduction of managed isolation are developed a range of offences and penalties to help ensure compliance will be considered. It is still the case that all non-essential international travel is not permitted. In a statement to Parliament
the Transport Secretary urged the UK Government to match the comprehensive approach being taken by the Scottish Government. Transport Secretary Michael Matheson said: “To manage the risk of importing new variants, and to give vaccine deployment the best chance of bringing us closer to normality here in Scotland, we have to place further limits on international travel. “The UK Government has only committed to adopting this for travellers returning from “red list” countries. However, we know that is not sufficient and we will go further. “The clinical advice is clear that a comprehensive system of managed quarantine is essential to minimise the impact of new COVID-19 variants."
Coffee could reduce men’s hearing loss For years, coffee has been shown to combat liver disease, type two diabetes and even increase life expectancy. Now a new study has revealed that men who drink coffee may also be reducing their risk of hearing loss. Researchers found that men who drink at least one coffee a day were 15 per cent less likely to lose their hearing than those who don’t drink coffee. The study - which saw a team at the Autonomous University of Madrid use data from 37,000 people in the UK Biobank suggests that coffee may have beneficial effects on hearing because of its antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties. The benefit appears to be the same regardless of whether the coffee consumed is caffeinated or decaffeinated, filtered or nonfiltered, according to the study. However, no link between coffee and hearing function was found among women, which the team said could be due to
differences in physiology. High circulating levels of the hormone oestrogen, which women have more of, protects against agerelated hearing loss, so the impact of diet on hearing would be ‘less relevant’, said the researchers. For men – who have lower oestrogen levels than women – the impact of beneficial dietary items like coffee might be more evident.
“Coffee consumption might have a beneficial effect on hearing function because of the antioxidant and antiinflammatory properties of some of its compounds,” said the researchers. The study monitored the coffee intake of 36,923 middle-
aged and older men and women over the course of 11 years. Their hearing was checked at the start of the study, and again in two follow-ups, and the results were analysed in a way that took into account the potential effects on hearing of other health and lifestyle factors, such a whether they smoked or had been exposed to loud noises. While the results showed that men who drank between one and four and a half cups of coffee a day were less likely to experience disabling hearing loss, Dr Marcos Machado-Fragua who was part of the research team - warned that coffee “should not be consumed to excess in a bid to prevent hearing loss, especially in people who have health problems related to caffeine consumption”. The European Food Safety Authority recommends that adults should not drink more than 400g of caffeine a day around four cups of coffee.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The pound is the top performer over the last month, with an average gain of 1.8%, but it was unable to extend its lead over the past week. It was not that investors were actively selling the pound: they were not actively doing anything, even with a plethora of UK data, albeit late in the week. GDP data came in slightly better than expected, despite November’s lockdown. Increases in services, production and construction are below pre-Covid levels, but still surpassing gloomy predictions. However, the big news this week that cannot hide was that 2020 GDP as a whole contracted -9.9%, the largest annual fall on record. In December the economy grew by 1.2% after shrinking 2.3% in November, and last month’s growth looks like the UK economy may avoid its first double-dip recession since the 1970’s. In his online “Mansion House” speech, Bank of EnglandGovernor Andrew Bailey focused on “the future of financial services, and the important role they play in our economy and internationally”. Not for the first time, Bailey made the case that Britain should avoid any temptation to line up regulation of the City solely with the EU’s rules: “This must be a global, not a regional, regime to be effective.”The governor made no mention of monetary policy. It’s been a busy week for the Bank, with optimism once again coming from Governor Bailey, predicting a spending spree when lockdown restrictions are lifted, according to the press. Chief Economist Andy Haldane predicted that in spring the economy will be firing on three cylinders as well. However, conflicting messages on a ‘great
British summer holiday’ from different government officials has led to some confusion on when exactly some normality may resume. February 22, and PM Boris Johnson’s lockdown exit plan cannot come quickly enough it seems. EURO Strengthening by an average of 0.2% the euro’s week was no more exhilarating than sterling’s. In the end it picked up two thirds of a cent from sterling, though it is still more than two and a quarter cents down from a month ago. There was only one properly pan-Euroland static to provide guidance. After a strong showing in January the Sentix measure of investor confidence dipped back into the gloom zone, falling from 1.3 to -0.2. Sentix highlighted a divergence between Europe and the rest of the world. German investor confidence fell from 9.2 to 8.6, and wholesale prices were flat on the year, sales were up 1.9%. Investors are enthusiastic at the prospect – still not confirmed – of Mario Draghi’s installation as Prime Minister of Italy. Although best-known from his tenure as President of the European Central Bank, Sig. Draghi has considerable experience of Italian politics, having spent ten years at the Treasury.Eleven years ago Sig Draghi promised to do “whatever it takes to preserve the euro” and the hope is that he can do the same for Italy and the EU budget. No one can be sure what rabbit he has under his hat this time but it could involve a common euro-area budget. Increased confidence in Italy has already taken the country’s borrowing cost below 0.5% for ten-year money, a record low.

Torrevieja and Agamed work toward biodiversity Torrevieja town hall and Agamed, the water management company, are set to establish new biodiversity points in various pumping stations at key points around the town. Among the works to be carried out are the installation of nest boxes for birds, shelter boxes for bats, construction of rock shelters for reptiles, and placement of drinking facilities for wild birds. A spokesperson for the project said, “The goal is for Torrevieja to be a more inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable space that strives to conserve and increase biodiversity at the local level, through the establishment of alliances between institutions, private companies and non-governmental organizations.” As a result of urban development, green spaces, such as trees, parks or gardens, are increasingly scarce, as buildings, roads and other infrastructures replace the natural
habitat of small animals which are vital to the town’s biodiversity. The concept "urban biodiversity" refers to all forms of life that coexist with human beings in cities and towns; and are those that provide vitally important services to the local ecosystem, such as the pollination of gardens and crops carried out by numerous species of insects, effective pest control carried out by insectivorous bats or reptiles such as geckos and lizards, as well as seed dispersal carried out by birds. Inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals approved by the UN in 2015, the project for Establishing Biodiversity Points in Pumping Stations of the Water System of Torrevieja was born. The project is a collaboration between the Torrevieja Town Hall and the Empresa Mixta Aguas del Arco Mediterraneo S.A. (AGAMED), together with the participation of the Faunatura Association.
A series of shelters and facilities designed to cater for various species of animal will be built at four pumping stations and a water reservoir: • Urb. Los Balcones South pumping station • Urb. Los Balcones North pumping station • El Chaparral West Pumping station • Urb. Punta la Víbora-Torreta III pumping station • Urb. La Siesta water reservoir.
environment.
NESTING BOXES FOR BIRDS Inside the different pumping stations, Faunatura Association will place various specific nest boxes for birds such as sparrows, blue tits, chickadees and long tailed tits. These structures, which simulate the presence of cavities and holes in rocks or trees, provide shelter for these species to reproduce, encouraging the establishment of bird populations in the area and thus improving the local
SHELTERS AND STRUCTURES FOR REPTILES Within the water pumping stations, shelters will also be built for reptiles such as geckos and lizards – again, very beneficial to humans, since, thanks to their fundamentally insect based diet, they help in the control of common insects in urban environments such as cockroaches, crickets, flies and mosquitoes. These shelters will be built
BAT BOXES Aimed at species of tree dwelling bats, the bat boxes will be installed inside the water pumping stations. The structures will allow the settlement of different species of mainly insect feeding bat, which will act as excellent biological controllers of mosquitoes, moths and other common and flying insects in urban environments.
with stones arranged inside metal cages measuring 90x50x50cm, and one will be placed at each station. The gaps between the rocks will provide shelter for the reptiles, while the upper part can be used by these animals to warm themselves in the sun. The species that experts believe will be most likely to use the shelters are the Iberian lizard (Podarcishispanicus), the common gecko (Tarentolamauritanica) and the pink gecko (Hemidactylusturcicus), although perhaps we will also see rarer species, thus helping their protection and conservation, such as the Betic lizard (Timonnevadensis). Water points for wild birds will be installed in the water pumping stations. These will consist of self-refilling drinkers through a 60L capacity water drum. Workers will monitor the results once the structures have been installed, both by direct observation and with the placement of motion triggered cameras.

Average cost of rent in Spain falls The fall in rent prices is no longer a big-city phenomenon in Spain. For the first time in years, the average cost of rent in the country is either on a downward trend or stagnating. This January, the coronavirus pandemic ended a growth streak that had been uninterrupted since July 2015, according to real estate website Fotocasa, and since June 2014, according to property website Idealista. This makes it the first drop recorded since the 20082014 financial crisis in Spain. The real estate portals Fotocasa, Idealista and Pisos.com began to record a drop in the cost of rent in Spain’s main cities in the early stages of the pandemic. Each month, rent became cheaper, and this began to be reflected in the national average. But in year-on-year terms, the cost of rent in any given month was still higher than it was in the same month of the previous year. Now, in 2021, this no longer holds true: the Spanish average of €11 per square meter that Idealista recorded as the asking price last January is 0.1percent less than 12 months earlier. It is not a big drop, but it is significant as it is the first time this has happened since June, 2014, according to Idealista.
Gonzalo Bernardos, director of the Real Estate Masters course at the University of Barcelona believes that real prices may have started to fall months ago. According to Bernardos, one of the reasons for the plummeting prices is a surplus in supply. A recent study by Casafari, a portal with a large property index aimed at professionals and companies, found that the number of properties available for rent in Spain soared last year by 178 percent. The authors of the report point out that this was mainly due to the number of tourist apartments that were placed on the traditional rental market. With coronavirus restrictions on travel, the number of tourists to Spain fell dramatically last year, meaning there was less demand for holiday rentals. Add to this the fact that many
families are having economic difficulties. “If you are suddenly on an ERTE furlough scheme, you realize you need to pay less,” says Lázaro Cubero, director of analysis at real estate firm Tecnocasa Group. “Many people have left the property they were renting in exchange for something cheaper and during the first lockdown we detected a shift on account of this.” There are also people looking for larger homes to accommodate their remote working requirements. “A number of people are looking to pay the same price, but for more space,” says Cubero. Both experts believe that these factors are consistent with the changes the portals have flagged up, with prices tumbling first in the big cities, which receive more tourists, people travelling for work and students.

Russian budget supermarket to launch in Spain A Russian low-cost supermarket chain is set to land in Spain this year and is expected to have a mainstream high-street presence nationwide by the year 2025. Owned by the Svetofor Group, Mere supermarkets are based upon the format of Aldi and Lidl as they were when they first arrived in the country, and prices are said to be between 10 percent and 20 percent cheaper than in Spain's existing network of stores. Managing director of Mere Spain, Andrey Murzov, describes the chain as 'spartan' and 'no-frills', with no shelves, display units or even staff. “Everything is stocked on pallets or in boxes, in order to reduce overheads as much as possible and be able to offer very cheap products,” Murzov explains. “This model of store is similar to what Lidl and Aldi used to use years ago. Our aim is to offer the best prices every day, thanks to a business concept that involves saving costs – rent, decoration, and personnel.”
The first branches will open in May this year, between 10 and 15 are planned by the end of 2021, and around 100 are expected to be trading in the country by the year 2025. Regions targeted for Mere's expansion are likely to be Madrid, Murcia, the Comunidad Valenciana, Catalunya, and Andalucía. Whilst German chains Lidl and Aldi started out in Spain as bottom-budget choices, with
goods – mostly, if not all, packaged – stacked up on wooden pallets or in large cardboard boxes on the floor, with narrow aisles and limited employees. These have now become more spacious, with better lighting, clearly-marked sections, and a greater emphasis
on fresh produce such as fruit and vegetables, including affordable organic sections, bread and cakes hand-made on the premises and still warm when they hit the shelves, freshly-caught fish and fresh meat, and their prices are similar to the most prevalent supermarket chains such as Mercadona, Consum, Mas y Mas, Spar and Día. Fresh produce is far more popular and makes up a larger percentage of the household shop in Spain, with the majority of consumers counting these as kitchen staples; elsewhere in Europe, particularly in more northerly countries, ready meals, processed and packaged food and tinned goods carry much more weight. Also, own-brand goods have a much greater presence on Spanish supermarket shelves at the expense of independent brands. But unlike in many northern European countries, the shop's own brand is generally of high quality and viewed as such by consumers.

Saturday 20th February – ITV2, 10.00 pm In 2005, Schmidt and Jenko are high school students, one an honor roll geek, the other a cool, athletic underachiever. By 2012, they are rookie cops, paired together, on bike patrol yearning to make arrests. After a screw up, they're sent undercover back to high school to find the source of a dangerous synthetic drug. They mix up their names, and Schmidt gets the no-brainer classes where he auditions for Peter Pan and falls in love with Wendy; Jenko gets AP classes where he falls in with highachieving dweebs. This second chance at high school gives Schmidt delusions of grandeur, which threaten the operation. Can they sort out their relationship as they stumble onto the bad guys?
An outbreak of dog flu has spread through the city of Megasaki, Japan, and Mayor Kobayashi has demanded all dogs to be sent to Trash Island. On the island, a young boy named Atari sets out to find his lost dog, Spots, with the help of five other dogs... with many obstacles along the way.
Simply Doors – much more than simply, doors Simply Doors is a family run business that has been established on the Costa Blanca since 2007. Owned and managed by Darren & Kim Holden, the business is based in San Luis, Torrevieja (next to the ‘Hire Centre’ and ‘Christmas Shop’ where the company boasts a large, bright showroom and plenty of parking. Since Darren and Kim took over the business in 2015, it has gone from strength to strength and now offers an amazing array of doors, both internal and external, in a wide range of colours and finishes. Simply Doors has also expanded its range of windows. Kim explained, “As well as our full door range we also offer uPVC double glazed windows which are high security and made locally using the 70 mm VEKA profile with 28mm glazing. We also have our Plegable System, an alternative to bi-fold doors which operate in the same way as Glass Curtains, fully secure and energy efficient.” Simply Doors window products are a high quality solution for both residential and commercial projects and the company carries out every step of the process from the initial site visit to the excellent after sales service. Money saving Now that energy bills here in Spain are higher, we all need to look at ways to reduce the energy loss from our homes. A high proportion of energy loss is attributed to draughty and ill fitting
windows this can be eliminated by replacing your windows with the latest energy efficient uPVC from Simply Doors. These windows, made from 70mm profile, are designed specifically to withstand the constant heat and exposure to ultra violet light and are therefore guaranteed for use here in Spain. No warping, deterioration or discoloration. Furthermore, the Simply Doors window system offers a full range of solutions, including sliding options, ‘Tilt and Turn’ and Persian blinds. This system also conforms with the latest legislation here in Spain for thermal insulation. To complete the window range, Simply Doors also offers a large choice of glass solutions including tinted, reflective and sound insulating glass. They are also able to offer ‘Planitherm’ glass which, combined with ‘Warm Edge’ glazing and Argon gas filled sealed units, meets the ‘A’ rating on the energy efficiency scale. Extensive door range As well as windows, Simply Doors continues to offer its popular internal door range, featuring a wide selection of stylish doors that would enhance any home. Kim explained, “We only use quality materials, all our doors are faced with 5mm MDF finished with either lacquer or a laminate wood effect. All the doors have a solid core which give greater insulation for heat and sound,
unlike doors from some larger superstores which are often hollow.” Composite Doors A composite door is a high performance door because it is formed from GRP composite (high impact glass-reinforced polymer), combining traditional wood aesthetics with low maintenance technology. Simply Doors’ composite doors are manufactured in the UK to the highest specification - each door is tested to the highest recognised standards of fire and weather-resistance, draught exclusion and security capability. Kim explained, “We take great pride in our composite doors to ensure you have a door which not only looks great but is also of extremely high quality and incredibly durable” Kim also said, “Our uPvc doors remain very popular. Our extensive range of door designs is tailor-made for modern living. They´re tough, hard-wearing and super-secure and of course, they look great as well!” Of course their expertise doesn’t stop at the front door. Simply Doors have a tremendous range of superb quality doors to suit every part of your home; from secure back doors to elegantly attractive patio doors and French doors. Simply Doors also offer conservatories and glass curtains, both popular options for making an outside space usable all year round. All of the doors come backed by a 10-
year guarantee, so it’s not just quality and style that come as standard but peace of mind too.

Jamie Redknapp doesn't Ruth and Eamonn return to This Morning want to follow Dad Harry onto 'I'm A Celebrity’ The 47-year-old star's father was crowned King of the Jungle in 2018, and while he followed in Harry's footballing footsteps, the same can't be said for an appearance on the ITV reality show. Speaking on 'The Harry Redknapp Show' podcast, he said: "My agent said to me about going into the jungle, but how can you follow that? Dad absolutely smashed it out of the park."
Ruth Langford and Eamonn Holmes' return to This Morning has been confirmed and this time they'll be back for an entire week. The husband and wife duo were replaced by Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary on Fridays at the beginning of the year, but they haven't stayed away for too long. Ruth, 60, and Eamonn, 61, will present the popular ITV show from Monday 15th until Friday 19th February. This is due to the fact that regular hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby and Friday presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O'Leary get to enjoy a halfterm break. Eamonn and Ruth's return was confirmed during an advert break during Wednesday's edition of This Morning. A trailer showing the married couple hosting the show played in a montage with a voiceover telling viewers about their anticipated return.
Eagle-eyed viewers spotted the advert and were quick to take to Twitter and share their excitement. Eamonn and Ruth presented their last official Friday show on This Morning on 18th December. At the beginning of January, Alison Hammond, 46, and X Factor host Dermot O'Leary, 47, took over on Fridays. Following their final appearance as hosts on the show, Eamonn took to social media to express gratitude for the outpouring of support fans had sent to him and Ruth following their final Friday. He said via Instagram video: "Hi everyone, just want to say something to you all from the bottom of my heart and that is thank you," he began the video. "Ruth and I have been overwhelmed yesterday and today by the amount of messages and we'll be replying via social media, by emails, by texts, by WhatsApp, by whatever way we can.”
Jamie admitted he was "nervous" about Harry's stint on the show, and he was relieved with the reaction he got from his campmates and the viewing public. He added: "I gotta be honest, I was nervous. I thought, 'He's bound to put his foot in it somewhere'. But he was brilliant and so natural. Everybody fell in love with him." During the 2018 series, Jamie admitted he was worried his dad might quit 'I'm A Celebrity' after seeing the 73year-old football manager get angry in dressing rooms in the past. He said: "There have been moments where I’ve thought, ‘You’re on the edge’. People say, ‘Your dad is so lovely. He’s so funny’. "But he can lose it sometimes. In a dressing room I’ve seen him lose it and
Jamie Redknapp
start throwing things.I was a bit worried that after a week or two he might go, ‘I don’t know if I need this’. But he’s stuck it out." And he was stunned to find out Harry had signed up at all. He explained: "I was actually really surprised when I found out he was going to be on it because he didn’t tell me, I read it in the paper. He was like, ‘If I had told you, you would have told me off.’ "
ITV confirms return date for Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway Ant & Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway will return to ITV on February 20, ITV has confirmed. The live variety show, hosted by Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, will be filmed in front of a virtual audience of 300 people and the first episode will feature Jamie and Harry Redknapp and Gary Barlow. Segment Undercover will also return, with the Redknapps, Davina McCall and Sir Mo Farah all victims of the duo’s hidden camera pranks. I’m A Celebrity… Get Out Of Me Ear will also return for the new series, which sees Ant and Dec instructing stars what to do through a hidden ear piece. The new episodes will also feature a mini-series called Double Trouble in which Ant and Dec have been cloned and the clones have gone rogue and will feature celebrities including Bear Grylls, Prue Leith, Rob Brydon, Alison Hammond and Jermaine Jenas. When hot, cook your pancakes for 1 min on each side until golden, keeping them warm in a low oven as you go. Serve with lemon wedges and caster sugar, or your favourite filling. Once cold, you can layer the pancakes between baking parchment, then wrap in cling film and freeze for up to 2 months.
Ingredients 156.25 g all-purpose flour, sifted 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/8 teaspoon salt 1 large egg, beaten 300 g buttermilk 2 Tablespoons butter, melted 3 Tablespoons sugar Method In a large bowl, whisk together the flour,

Method Whisk the flour, baking powder, sugar, vanilla extract and a pinch of salt in a bowl using a balloon whisk until mixed. Slowly pour in the milk until you get a smooth, thick batter. Heat a little of the oil in a non-stick frying pan over a medium-low heat, and add 2 tbsp batter into the pan at a time to make small, round pancakes. You will need to do this in batches of two-three at a time. Cook for 3-4 mins until the edges are set, and bubbles are appearing on the surface. Flip the pancakes over and cook for another 2-3 mins until golden on both sides and cooked through. Keep warm in a low oven while you cook the remaining pancakes. Serve stacked with lots of toppings of your choice, or serve with bowls of toppings for everyone to help themselves.
baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well-combined. In a medium bowl, combine the egg and buttermilk. Pour into the flour mixture and stir. Stir in the melted butter and sugar. Heat a large, nonstick pan to medium heat. Coat with butter or nonstick cooking spray. (I prefer butter.) Drop 1/3 cup of batter onto the heated surface. Once the top begins to bubble, wait an additional 30 seconds or so, then flip and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, until each side is golden brown. Repeat with the remaining batter, reapplying more butter or nonstick spray in between each pancake. You may need to decrease the heat to medium-low about halfway through. Serve with syrup or fresh fruit and enjoy!

How to fall in love with fitness Not even the most avid of exercisers are immune to a loss of motivation when the mornings are still dark and summer seems a lifetime away. And, even if your start-of-the-year spirit is still carrying you through, the motivation to exercise could begin to wane. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In a 2016 study published in Frontiers In Psychology, researchers identified positive emotions like fun and enjoyment as being key to maintaining exercise motivation and sticking to a fitness routine long term. Keep it simple Overcomplicating workouts is up there with drifting off to sleep in your make-up – easily done but counterproductive. Instead, keeping sessions efficient, clear and contained (both in time and space) stops them from feeling overwhelming and neverending. Instead of dragging three pieces of home gym equipment to your spot, grab one pair of weights you can use for an entire circuit. Don’t have access to the kit? Opt for bodyweight exercises instead. Just remember to nail basic movements before you progress to more challenging variations or more complicated equipment. Set a goal Exercise motivation is great, while it lasts. Having a goal to work towards can
make all the difference. The smaller, incremental goals on the way to that larger goal will keep you exercising once the initial motivation has dropped off. Commit to a regular routine A routine can be the thing to make your fitness goals a reality. Fitness often clicks when we committed to making it a regular habit. The goal is to make your regime, whatever it looks like, as typical as brushing your teeth. Seek joy, not reps Find a form of exercise you actually enjoy. Sounds obvious, and yet, how many times have you put yourself through a workout that felt like a punishment? If you can’t bear the thought of burpees, try a dance class, boxing or Pilates. And keep trying until you find something you like. Not only is life better when you’re having fun, but you’re also more likely to stick to something you enjoy. Invest Want to run a 5k? There are myriad free apps for that. Want to run your fourth marathon in your fastest time yet? You may need to call in the experts. Investing in your own fitness regime needn’t cost the earth, but booking a few sessions with a PT, signing up to a fitness app or investing in some quality kit could be the thing that keeps you keen on the days when motivation is harder to come by.

Research names best drinks for diabetes Type-2 diabetes increases the threat of rising blood sugar levels - the main sugar found in blood. It is an important source of energy and provides nutrients to the body but having too much of it can inflict damage on the vessels that supply blood to vital organs, thereby increasing the risk of heart disease and stroke. What beverages a person consumes can have a great impact on this process. For people with type 2 diabetes, tomato juice may help stave off the heart troubles that often complicate the disease. Researchers have found that drinking tomato juice for three weeks had a blood-thinning effect in people with the disease, said Diabetes in Control. The research claims: "The juice reduced platelet aggregation - the blood's ability to clot. "If corroborated by larger studies, the finding may one day also help individuals with increased clotting tendency such as smokers, long-distance deep vein thrombosis." Authors of a June 2013 British Journal of Nutrition study found overweight and obese women experienced reduced inflammation after drinking around one
So disappointed For the second year, it seems my daughter will have to cancel her wedding plans. We are so fed up with not being able to celebrate their marriage with our extended family. We had booked for last June and had to rearrange it for this April. Now it looks to be the same with no end in sight. Even if restrictions here in Spain are lifted after April, half of our family in the UK have said they will probably not travel because of Britain imposing a two week quarantine. My daughter in inconsolable, and her fiance has now lost his job as his company have closed their doors and will go in to receivership. The effects of the virus have been catastrophic on such a lot of people. Not only are people dying, but lives are being turned upsidedown with little to console us. Again in Spain we are now waiting until after April for life to hopefully return to normal. The sad fact is that it may not, and this is something we all need to face up to. Yes, one day we will see an end to it, as all things must pass but it may not be yet. I would suggest you rearrange your daughter's wedding for next summer when everyone hopefully is more able to travel freely. Yes she must allow herself to be upset and wallow a little, but then we must all pull our socks up and get on with it again. It's upsetting that her boyfriend has lost his job, but he will get another one in time - the young are resilient. We must count our blessings every day that things could be so much worse for us personally. There is ALWAYS someone worse off.

and a half cups of tomato juice daily for three weeks. Tomatoes have been found to hold a host of health benefits, particularly because they're full of lycopene. This is a powerful substance which research has suggested can reduce the risk of cancer, heart disease and macular degeneration. Studies have also found that black tea
significantly reduces rises in blood glucose levels among both healthy and pre-diabetic adults, in this case after consuming a sugary drink. Authors of the study wrote: "We demonstrated that black tea reduced incremental blood glucose after sucrose consumption at 60, 90 and 120 minutes
compared with placebo." "The data confirm that polyphenols lower glycaemic response and may be responsible for the lower rates of diabetes observed with tea and coffee consumption," added Dr Peter Clifton, professor of nutrition at the University of South Australia in Adelaide, who recently conducted a review of the role of dietary polyphenols. Indeed, the major bioactive compounds in black tea are polyphenols, naturally occurring antioxidants abundant in plant foods (and drinks) that are said to promote health and protect against a range of diseases. Black tea is derived from leaves of the shrub (or small tree) camellia sinensis and is one of the most widely consumed of the tea types. One study looked at the insulin-enhancing properties of tea and its components. Results showed that black tea increased insulin activity more than 15-fold. In the study, researchers concluded that, in addition to polyphenols, several other compounds in tea were shown to improve insulin levels, specifically a catechin called epigallocatechin gallate.

73% wouldn’t feel safe in a driverless car A survey of has revealed that 73% of Britons wouldn’t feel safe being transported by a driverless, or autonomous, vehicle. Nearly 9 in 10 (89%) motorists
surveyed said the main reason is that they don’t believe that UK roads are ready for driverless cars yet. Roughly the same number (87%) also said they wouldn’t trust an autonomous vehicle
to take their children to school alone. Despite the promise that autonomous vehicles could think faster than their human occupants and spot possible danger within a microsecond, motorists still aren’t convinced. Nearly four out of five said they think they could spot a hazard faster. British drivers also revealed they wouldn’t trust their self-driving vehicle at high speeds, with only 17% happy for an autonomous vehicle to take them on the motorway and reach speeds of up to 70mph. The company behind the survey, Vanarama, asked people how long driverless cars would have to be on the roads for before they would begin to trust them. Surprisingly, a third of the UK public said they feel they could never trust a driverless car. However, 67% of motorists said they would be prepared to trust a driverless car depending on how long they had been on the road, with the most common answer being between one to four years. Nearly one in five people said they would want driverless cars to be on the roads for over a decade before they would trust that they were safe. Because of this, 95% of motorists believe there should be an option for someone to take manual control of the driverless car, although 9% think that it should only be allowed in emergencies.

The Movement of our Eyes What Types of We do not realise it, but the ability to see well, something fundamental when we drive, depends largely on eye movements. A study by a research group of the INTRAS (University Institute for Traffic and Road Safety Research), published in the scientific journal Plos One, has shown that it may be feasible to apply a test used up to now in the clinical field, the ADEM (Development of Eye Movements for Adults) to detect visual impairments, both in obtaining and in the renewal of the driving licence. According to those responsible for the research, this test, which measures and studies eye movements, can be "a practical, inexpensive and easily applied tool" to evaluate drivers and "detect deficiencies in saccadic efficiency that could have an effect detrimental to driving performance." The research wanted to relate eye movements to driving and assess their importance. And the results show that drivers perform "significantly better" on the ADEM test than non-drivers. According to the researchers, this study aimed to “evaluate and compare the results of drivers and non-drivers in the ADEM test, taking into account a set of driving parameters (experience, exposure to risk, and daytime and nighttime difficulty) and the demographic
variables (age, gender, academic level) as possible predictors of test performance". Almost 80% of the information we receive in our day to day comes to us through our eyes. When we drive,
eye movements that allow us to observe both static and moving objects. As its name indicates, they are the movements that each eye performs separately. They are controlled by three pairs of muscles: the medial and lateral rectus, the superior and inferior rectus, and the superior and inferior obliques. Visual problems are often caused by poor coordination when performing eye movements. Eye movements are classified into three types:
seeing well is essential. In fact, a recent study by ophthalmology experts from the University of Helsinki (Finland) shows that almost 24% of road accidents are related to a failure to observe or loss of visual attention. So far, eye movements related to driving have not been studied or measured, among other things, because there was no test that assessed them (a gold standard). Thus, most countries only require primary eye health exams to obtain or renew a driving licence. In this research, there were 302 healthy people (between 20 and 86 years old), who completed a selfreported questionnaire and an ADEM test. Of these, 214 were drivers (70.9%). What are eye movements? We hardly perceive them, but it is the
Saccades. They are the rapid and intermittent movements that the eyes make and that allow us to complete the scene we are seeing as clearly as possible. Saccadic refers to a "sudden jolt", so we do not realise that it occurs. Fixation or tracking movements. Thanks to them we can continue to see the objects that are moving. Movement convergence. They are coordinated movements that allow the point of view to be deviated simultaneously. In this way, we can continue to focus on objects even if they are zoomed in or out. All these movements are related to each other. For example, when we read, we make very quick movements over the text (saccades) and small stops to read and understand each word (fixation).
Vehicles Can I Drive? If you look at the back of your driving licence you will see a list of vehicle categories determined by both a letter and a pictogram indicating the type of vehicle referred to. The license also displays dates next to those categories for which you are permitted to drive, in the columns headed 10, 11 and 12, which detail validity from and to dates and any observations, respectively. The vast majority of drivers in Spain have a category “B” licence, which means they are certified as qualified to drive a normal passenger car but being qualified in that category also allows you to drive some other vehicles. As a category B licence holder, you are permitted to drive specially designed passenger cars, for private use, ranging from a small urban car, an SUV, minivan, or sports car. There is no limitation to the type of vehicle, so long as it is registered as a private car, but there are limitations to the physical characteristics. Namely, a private car must be equal to or less than 3,500 kg in weight and can have a maximum of nine seats, including the driver. The vehicle can only be driven for private and leisure use and not for any commercial gain, whether that be for business or carrying passengers in exchange for cash or goods. In the case of vans, you can drive any van in which either passengers, goods or both can be transported, whether that vehicle is approved as a private or commercial vehicle, so long as it has a maximum weight equal to or less than 3,500 kg and no more than nine seats including the driver. For both cars and vans you can also attach a trailer with a category B licence, provided the total combined weight of the vehicle and trailer do not exceed the maximum weight permitted by the technical specifications of the vehicle. In the case of passenger cars, there are two options allowed under a category B licence. Firstly, a passenger vehicle of up to up to 3,500 kg and a trailer not exceeding 750 kg, representing a maximum combined weight of 4,250 kg. Or a passenger car (up to 3,500 kg) and a trailer exceeding 750 kg, provided that the combination does not exceed 3,500 kg. If the trailer exceeds 750 kg and the joint between car and trailer exceeds 3,500 kg but not exceeding 4,250 kg, it is necessary to take two specific practical tests which covers vehicle manoeuvres and dealing with traffic. If the trailer exceeds 750 kg and the joint between car and trailer also exceeds 4,250 kg, it is necessary to obtain a BE category certification, which enables a passenger car to tow up to 7,000 kg, spread over 3,500 kg maximum weight for the car and 3,500 kg maximum weight for the trailer. This requires both a theoretical test and two practical tests, one of manoeuvres and the other in
traffic. However, in addition to what we might consider to be the normal vehicles one would expect to be able to drive with a category B licence, but there are others. You are permitted to drive some twowheeled vehicles with the category B qualification. Having the “B” category automatically qualifies licence holders for the AM category. That permits drivers to ride small mopeds with engines smaller than 50cc or an electric motor, provided that the vehicle has a maximum limited speed of 45 kilometres per hour and they are only ridden on urban roads. After holding your category B licence for a period of 3 years, you are automatically upgraded to be allowed to drive vehicles requiring the A1 category, which permits you to drive small motorcycles up to 125 cc and with a maximum power of 11 kW (15 hp). However, you must be aware that this is only the case in Spain. This automatic classification is not effective in other European countries without obtaining the A1 classification qualification separately. That is why, even if your license is issued in Spain, you will not see the validity dates filled in on the back of the licence unless you have undergone specific examinations. In the event of a category B licence holder riding a 125cc motorbike and getting stopped to have your details checked at the roadside, the Guardia Civil traffic officers will refer to the dates of your category B validation to ensure you qualify. With the category B license you are permitted to drive three-wheeled bikes or tricycles, provided that two of the three wheels are on the same axle. There are no limitations in terms of power, the only condition is that the manufacturer has had the vehicle approved as a tricycle and not as a three-wheeled motorcycle. The difference is that the tricycle requires specific approval and must have certain standard characteristics including a parking brake, minimum track width and lighting specific to this type of vehicle. If the vehicle does not meet these characteristics, then they are subject to the conditions of licencing for motorcycles. A motorcycle with a sidecar for example is not classed as a tricycle and is governed by motorcycle licencing requirements. All microcars and vehicles which have been approved as quads can be driven with the category B licence. This includes two categories of light quadricycle (with a maximum weight of 350 kg and maximum power of 4kW) and normal quads that can reach up to 550 kg maximum and up to 15 kW (20 hp). The four-wheel buggy type of vehicle of more than 15 kW can also be driven, so long as they are classed as passenger cars. You can also drive quads or ATVs, whether of leisure or agricultural type and regardless of engine size or power.

Without a Win: Alonso hospitalised Elche CF 16, Celta Vigo 7 after bike crash The seeds of hope that Elche's second half performance last week produced, have failed to germinate. Expectations were high for the match at Celta Vigo's Estadio de Balaidos on Friday night. Both teams were suffering from a long win-less streak; Celta Vigo last won on the 30th December, 7 matches ago, whilst we have to go all the way back to the 23rd October for Elche's last win. As is so often the case with the Franjiverdes, intrigue preceded the fixture. Christian Bragarnik, the Elche owner and Argentinian Football Agent and representative for the Elche manager, Almiron, seems to also be involved in the representation for Eduardo German Coudet, the Celta Vigo manager. An interesting, irregular and some might say potentially score altering situation! The first half was evenly matched until Almiron's men took an early half time Siesta and conceded 2 goals within 60 seconds! On the 45th minute, Vigo born 25 year old Santi Mina, slotted a bullet into the centimetres between Badia and
his post. On the 45th+1 minute team mate Brais Mendez took his opportunity in an open goal, as Badia wasn't able to gather in the ball following an attack. The Elche fans were left hoping for a repeat of last weeks second half performance. They were not disappointed, as after just 5 minutes the Franjiverdes bounced back to make the score 2-1. A communication error between the Celta goalie No13 and his No4 defence resulted in the ball falling at the feet of Carrillo, who whipped it across the front of the open goal to the thigh of a waiting Rigoni, who could not fail to score. More fluke than skill, but still a vital goal. However the fan's hopes were totally extinguished on the 68th minute when Santi Mina scored his second goal of the match. It was a stunning ballerina like mid air volley to the top left hand corner, an impossible save.
The consequence of yet another loss was published on the Elche CF website barely an hour after the match. Almiron resigned. His short explanation was along the lines of 'there is not much to explain, except to wish the best to the club and players'. The fans are left wondering if Almiron left it too late to leave and who will arrive? Elche CF will play their bitter rivals Eibar, who were promoted when Elche were dubiously and rather harshly relegated from La Liga in 2014/15 for financial irregularities, on Saturday 20th at 14:00. Spanish Formula 1 driver Fernando Alonso was rushed to hospital after being involved in an accident while riding his bike in Switzerland. The champion has reportedly undergone successful jaw surgery after the accident and the Alpine F1 team is expecting the two-time champion to be "fully operational to undertake preparation for the season" after a period of rest. Alonso sustained a fractured upper jaw after he was involved in a collision with a car, which was turning into a supermarket car park According to a news report by Gazzetta dello Sport in Italy, the two-time F1 world champion Alonso was hit by the car while out on a training ride near Lugano in Switzerland. The accident leaves question marks over Alonso’s fitness just six weeks before the start of the new season, when he is due to make his F1 comeback with the rebranded Alpine squad following a two-year break from the series. Since making his final F1 start with McLaren in 2018, Alonso has raced in sportscars, IndyCar and the Dakar Rally, but announced last summer that he would be

returning to grand prix racing in 2021 on a multi-year deal. Alonso ramped up preparations for his return to F1 by completing extensive running in the 2018spec Renault F1 car last year, as well as twice sampling the 2020 R.S.20 model. Alpine has not formally announced any plans for a reserve driver ahead of the 2021 season, should the team be required to find a stand-in for Alonso. ExWilliams driver Sergey Sirotkin served in the role last year.
Alonso heavily-embedded himself within the Renault squad throughout the second half of last season to help his preparations, as well as being reunited with his title-winning Renault F1 car from 2005 for some show runs in Abu Dhabi. His return to the grid for the 2021 season comes 20 years after he made his F1 debut with Minardi in 2001, starting a career that has yielded 32 grand prix victories and 97 podiums across stints at Renault, McLaren and Ferrari.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT rewards of picking Yo-Pierre as an actual striker - who’d have thought it - as the Gabonese helped himself to a hat-trick helped, in part, to another average day out by Leeds’ keeper Meslier. Getting done at your near post twice and giving away a penalty is not very helpful.

I’m open to the suggestion that I may have jumped the gun a couple of weeks ago when I suggested that the cream had risen to the top and was likely to stay there until the end of the season.
Finally, the Fantasy Football woes will have continued for many in the latest matchday. How many of us looked at Josh Maja and thought he might do a bit and then opt for Josh King instead? I can certainly raise my hand on that one. The exSunderland striker scored twice on his full debut for Scott Parker’s men, seeing off Everton 2-0. Maybe that relegation trapdoor isn’t completely closed, after all.
I was, of course, referring to both Manchester City and Liverpool - not City on their own, and I don’t think I could get away with claiming one thing when the other was the reality. I mean, I am not Gareth Bale on Instagram. Saturday lunchtime was the first time King Kloppo had lost three Liverpool matches in a row, meaning his need for some interesting excuses for a defeat are being worked through quicker than ever. That said, even Jurgen couldn’t blame Alisson’s cold little toes for his bizarre choice to come legging it from his goal, frightening the living daylights out of debutant Ozan Kabak and gifting Jamie Vardy the goal he thoroughly deserved. The sadness in this result is not the result itself - Leicester deserved their win - but in the fact that Bobby Firmino’s assist will be instantly forgotten and considered worthless as Liverpool lost (again). It was a moment of impish little magic, showboating to the extreme and really should have been pulled out of the locker to assist either a winner, a late equaliser or, at the very least, an icing on the cake 6th in a rout. Liverpool will miss out on the Champions League next season at this rate as this is fast becoming the worst title defence since AJ got knocked out by a Mexican waiter.
I’m joking. Of course, it is.
As someone who has a lot of respect for kind Uncle Roy Hodgson, I think it might be time for him to call it a day. Palace are not going to get relegated - fortunately for them, Sheffield United, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion are far too gone for that to be a worry. But, they are in danger of ending up the next worst team - especially if the current next worst team Burnley can rock up in South East London and score three. When do Burnley ever score three? Hodgson’s contract is up at the end of the season, along with the majority of the first-team squad, so surely it would make sense to gently move him aside now and
Martinez, 100%. Aston Villa’s goalkeeper has flourished since leaving Arsenal, like many others might well do in the coming months. A fine display of doing what he is paid to do saw the all-English coaching clash end 0-0. I was weirdly happy to see Wolves pick up their win against Southampton - not because I have anything against Southampton, far from it. Neither am I a closet Wolves fan. But I do like Nuno and as much as I have started to feel his time in the Black Country might be coming to an end I am sure these three points go a long way to flipping that on it’s head. Equally, my feelings that he could be on his way soon were based on
we will never officially know that as VAR decided to break with convention and not check that - they went straight to getting Pawson over the screen where, despite it not being possible to call a clear and obvious error, he decided he’d made a clear and obvious error and overturned his decision. Minutes later, Diagne hitched a ride on Maguire’s back in the United area and forced David de Gea to make the kind of save that had me checking if it was 2015. No foul, Craig? Maguire’s day ended perfectly when his deepinto-injury-time header was tipped on to the post. As lovely as the point will feel to
Gareth Southgate was at the King Power and I hope he was spending most of his time thinking up creative ways to get Vardy to agree to be on standby for the European Championships. Considering there will be many games where England barely touch the ball against much better teams, it’d be useful having him around when Harry Kane’s ankles go again. Speaking of which, Kane continues to struggle against Man City - not that that makes him a bad player, of course. Sure, a ‘modern penalty’ changed the direction of the game but at no point did you really think that (a) Spurs were going to hurt City and (b) Bale was going to have enough puff left to actually score after that dribble. After Eric Dier chose not to bother any form of attempt to block Ilkay Gundogan’s first goal of the day, you have to give credit to Davinson Sanchez for trying to stop his second with his head whilst prone on the deck after Ilkay had well and truly sat him down.
bring in the guy who will lead them into the new dawn? It gives the new manager the chance to have a look, see who he wants to keep and even more time to work out how to lock Zaha and Eze in a room so nobody buys them in the summer. Best signing of the season? Emi
nothing other than the made up punditry that goes on in my head. I’m not quite sure what Harry Maguire did to upset Craig Pawson so much. For a brief second, it looked like Manchester United had won one of those ‘modern penalties’ when he went to ground. Was he offside? Well,
Sam Allardyce and his team, that’s not getting them out of the relegation zone any time soon. Most of the time, it’s a question of which Leeds turn up to play and this weekend saw that Leeds completely fall apart in the first half against the Arsenal. Mikel Arteta reaped the
