World Cancer Day draws the crowds M aria and the Pink Ladies and Panthers marked World Cancer Day at Zenia Boulevard with not just one, but two events. World Cancer Day was 4th February and saw the team of volunteers raising awareness of and funds for a local anti-cancer charity.

Then on Saturday 8th there was a second event celebrating the lives of those who have battled the disease and highlighting the benefits of early detection.

On both days the Pink Ladies and Panthers were in the main square at Zenia

Boulevard handing out cactus plants, provided by Zenia Boulevard management team, in return for a small donation. The message to the public was “Early Detection Saves Lives� and so the Pink Ladies were also making appointments for any member of the public who wishes to book a cancer screening test.

A minutes silence was held at 3pm in memory of all those who have been lost to cancer and a memory board was available for

those who wanted to leave loved ones a message. There was live entertainment provided by some of the best entertainers on the Costa Blanca led by Stevie Spit (BEM). These included Johnny Lea, No Limit, Bee Rumble, Rachel Prescott, Al Joel, The Raquel Pena Flamenco Dance Academy and Nigel Burchill as Elvis closed the show.

Once all the money has been counted the total amount will be announced in The Costa Blanca People and donated directly to help fight cancer on a local level.

World Cancer Day is a global uniting initiative led by the Union for

International Cancer Control (UICC). By raising worldwide awareness, improving education and working towards a world where millions of preventable cancer deaths are saved and access to life-saving cancer treatment and care is equal for all - no matter who you are or where you live.

Created in 2000, World Cancer Day has grown into a positive movement for everyone, everywhere to unite under one voice to face one of the greatest challenges in history.

The initiative believes that through positive actions, together we can reach the target of reducing the number of premature deaths from cancer by one third by 2030.

Tourists eating in more than eating out Tourist spending in Spain continues to rise, but anyone hoping to capitalise on this needs to know what, in fact, is spent and where. According to the Trade and Territory Office of Valencia's Chamber of Commerce (PATECO), in the Comunidad Valenciana alone, a record number of holidaymakers – 29.5 million – was seen in 2019, including Spaniards living in other parts of the country.

Collectively, the region's 29.5 million spent just over €13.4 billion over last year. However, of this a total of 15.8 percent, or slightly more than €2.1bn, went on supermarket produce. The percentage rises to nearly the entire total in the case of tourists who have holiday homes and do not need to spend on accommodation during their stay.

Of the €2.1bn spent in shops, for every €10, a total of €6 is shelled out in supermarkets on daily consumer goods such as food, drink, toiletries and cleaning products.

The remaining €4 in every €10 goes on clothes, shoes, technology, toys, and souvenirs.

Holidaymakers with a second home in the region, and those who rent holiday accommodation such as apartments or villas, are the ones who spend the most of their budgets on everyday groceries – out of the €1.34bn this tourist segment parts with every

year, 63.2 percent is in supermarkets.

The Comunidad Valenciana has some of the highest numbers of privatelyowned tourist accommodation in the country – either holiday homes owned by the tourists themselves, or owned by other individuals, couples or families who rent them out for holidays.

These alternatives to hotels, aparthotels and other resort complexes means package holidays in the

Comunidad Valenciana are among the minority.

Tourists staying in hotels and resorts spend 66 percent of their money – estimated to be €416m a year in the eastern region alone – on 'occasional use' consumer goods, such as clothes, electronics, souvenirs and other items not needed for daily living or which do not 'run out'.

Less eating out PATECO says the spike in retail sales at

certain times of year, such as summer, are a good indicator of the fact that tourists are parting with a lot of their money in shops rather than in other areas, like restaurants, bars, excursions, and so on.

In parts of Spain where package tourism is in the majority, those staying in aparthotels in resorts on a selfcatering basis are, naturally, likely to shell out most of their money in shops, although this is less likely to be the case for people in hotels, even if theirs is not an all-inclusive deal, since a significant slice of the budget will be on eating out.

PATECO carried out the study to find out which side of the 'open-all-hours' debate made more sense. In 2012, the then PP-led national government granted 'Major Tourism Influx Zone' (ZGAT) status to hundreds of coastal towns around Spain, and traders in ZGATs were given permission to open whenever they liked.

This included Sundays and bank holidays and, in theory, also overnight.

However, small, family-run businesses have complained large national or multi-national firms will benefit from 'unfair competition' at their expense.

This resulted in several towns applying for their ZGAT status to be removed.

Orihuela council´s International Residents department hosted a special event this week, with around 100 people attending the Playa Flamenca town hall to participate.

The subject of the seminar was driving in Spain, and included the latest advice about Brexit, including how the UK will have until the end of the year to sign a bilateral agreement with Spain, or the process for licence exchanges will be the same as countries like Russia, whereas applicants will have to undergo a driving test in order to exchange their licence for a Spanish one.

At the moment, a transitional period has been agreed and so the current process is the same as if the UK had remained in the European Union.

The talk was presented by Mark Nolan, president of the N332 Road Traffic Association, who explained that the information had been compiled by Guardia Civil traffic officers in conjunction with Orihuela´s local police.

At the end of the talk the local police wanted to urge those residents who are driving foreign registered vehicles to start the process or registration in Spain as they are about to clampdown on foreign vehicles in the municipality, in particular those which are in the country longer than would qualify them as being for tourist use.

The town hall is now looking into arranging more seminars like this where the questions about all aspects of living in Spain can be answered.

BITE SIZE Clean beach campaign targets plastics NEWS: Residents meeting reminder

The show can’t go on Due to unforeseen circumstances The Cardenal Belluga Theatre Group have cancelled their show for the second time. As many readers know they have been running for a number of years giving good shows in the past.

However organisers feel this show is not ready for the theatre and requires more rehearsals. The group is looking for more members to perform on stage or behind the scenes. They also require technical people for sound, lighting and various other commitments. A meeting will be on the Thursday 13th of February at the Social Centre at 2pm.This is situated next to the Health Clinic with the police station behind on the Urb La Marina. All those interested in joining the group are invited to come and meet the current members.

"After the effects of the DANA and of storm Gloria, which hit our beaches hard, along with sea weed and sea grasses the sea has returned a lot of plastic. For this reason we are launching two cleaning campaigns for the Oriolan beaches.”

These will be selective collections so that the waste and plastics that are mixed with the natural waste won’t be washed back into the sea. The plastics will be hand collected and then the plants will be collected mechanically.

The collection campaign will begin today Tuesday, 11th February, at Cala Estaca and Cala Mosca the Playa Flamenca beaches, while the second phase will take place on Tuesday, 18thFebruary at Playa de La Glea. Those interested can voluntarily go along and participate in the collection and protection of the environment. The

initiative will begin at 10:30 in the morning, and volunteers will be given gloves and bags for the collection of plastics.

Environmental races The Department of Road Cleaning and Urban Solid Waste took an active role in the recent Half Marathon and 8K city run in Orihuela, which took place on Sunday (9th February). The Department used the races to coincide with its environmental awareness campaign “Kilometre Clean, the Goal is Recycle”.

Councillor Dámaso Aparicio, explained: “Containers for the selective collection of plastic water bottles were placed near the supply points so that participants can dispose of the water bottles safely and in an environmentally friendly way. And encouraged spectators to recycle any ”plastics they spot on the route.”

This campaign plans to collect a total of 15,000 plastic bottles that will be subsequently transferred to a recycling plant.

Murcia has lowest cancer death rate Murcia is the region with the lowest death rate associated with cancer, new figures have revealed. Although 2,765 people died as a result of the disease in 2019, the rate of 185 per 100,000 was the lowest of all of the 17 Spanish regions.

New diagnoses of the disease were also lower in Murcia, at 503 per 100,000,

compared with the country’s average of 586 per 100,000.

This is a reflection of the region’s ‘prevention is better than a cure’ policy, claim health bosses. An additional 20 percent had been spent on oncological medicines during last year, €61 million in total, with another increase of 6 percent expected in 2020.

Debra donations Children’s charity Debra has been presented with not one, but two donations of 500e.

Charity shop Manageress Anne Wylie was presented with the donation from the “Fab Friends” after a bereavement. This Fab friends was followed by a donation by local man Graham who also donated 500e after being moved by what the children have to suffer with this debilitating disease.

Vega Baja laboratory develops Coronavirus test kit A Redován company has developed the first coronavirus detection kit in Spain. The MDC laboratory has been using the new device since January 29.

The kit has been developed in collaboration with Primerdesign Ltd and means that Vega Baja company MDC has been the first to provide reference laboratories in Spain and Portugal with the “only reliable detection system recommended by the centre of infectious diseases www.cdc.gov.”

The kit is designed to exclusively detect the 2019-nCoV strain of the new

coronavirus, thanks to the study of its genome sequences published in scientific databases.

In addition, scientists in Redován said "we have designed a compact system initially developed for military purposes, that works with lyophilized kits (which do not require refrigeration) and allows a clear result to be obtained in less than two hours."

This system allows field hospitals, mobile healthcare units, emergency laboratories or private labs in any location in Spain or Portugal access to real-time pathogen detection.

Spanish passport fifth most valuable in the world A Spanish passport is the fifth-most 'useful' in the world, according to official figures about where citizens can travel to and how. The Henley Passport Index, drawn up by London-based consultation firm Henley & Partners, uses data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), and found that the most valuable passport anyone can hold is a Japanese one, since this allows nationals to travel to 191 countries without needing a visa.

A Singaporean passport is the next-best thing, as its holders can travel to 190 countries without a visa, and a German or South Korean passport are joint third, permitting entry to 189 countries visa-free.

Finland and Italy are joint fourth, allowing visa-free travel to 188 countries, whilst Spain comes in fifth along with Luxembourg and Denmark, all of whose passports let their holders get into 187 countries without a visa. A Spanish passport beats a French or Swedish one, which allows for visa-free travel to 186 countries.

Joint seventh, permitting the holder to get into 185 countries without a visa, are passports held by citizens of Austria, Ireland, The Netherlands, Portugal, and Switzerland.

Although the figures have only just been released, they are based upon the value of international passports as at 7th January, when the UK had not yet left the European Union, although this was on the cards at the time – on that date, and

still the 28th member State, a passport from Britain was joint eighth along with Belgium, Greece, Norway and the USA, and its holders could get into 184 countries without a visa.

With 183 visitable countries, Australia,

Canada, the Czech Republic, Malta and New Zealand came next, and the top 10 was completed by Hungary, Lithuania and Slovakia, whose passports permit travel to 181 countries without a visa.

The lowest-ranked EU passport was from Croatia, giving entry to 169 countries, just below Bulgaria (171) and Romania (172) and just above San Marino (168) and Andorra (167).

For continental Europe, not counting the former Soviet States, and Kosovo – the lowest-ranking were Turkey (111 countries), Albania (114), BosniaHerzegovina (117), North Macedonia (123), Montenegro (125), Serbia (133, along with El Salvador and Hondurás), and Vatican City (146, together with Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago).

A Kosovo passport only allows the holder into 40 countries – the same as

Lebanon – fewer than practically the whole of Africa, except Sudan and Somalia.

As for the former Soviet nations, a passport from Turkmenistan gets the holder into 52 countries; from Uzbekistan, 57 countries; Tajikistan, 58; Armenia, 62; Kyrgyzstan, 63; Azerbaijan, 67; Kazakhstan, 76; Georgia, 116; Moldova, 120; Ukraine, 128 – along with Nicaragua; and Russia itself, joining Micronesia with 118 countries.

The poorest-ranking passports in the world, below Kosovo and with fewer than 40 countries available to travel to without a visa, are North Korea and Sudan (39), Nepal and Palestine (38), Libya (37), Yemen (33), Pakistan and Somalia (32), Syria (29), Iraq (28), and the least-valuable passport of all, from Afghanistan, whose citizens can only enter 26 countries without needing a visa.

High climber The passport which has soared highest in the ranking in the last decade is that of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which has gone up 47 places to number 18, level with Bulgaria at 171 countries.

A Spanish passport is, therefore, the fourth-most valuable in Europe, together with Luxembourg and Denmark, whilst a British passport is the 14th-most valuable, jointly with Belgium, Greece and Norway.

Spain was also the fifth-most useful passport in the world last year, although it then allowed entry without a visa into 186 countries, rather than 187.

Valentine rail special Spain’s rail network, RENFE, has launched a special Valentine’s Day offer which gives two for the price of one on rail tickets on the long-distance and high-speed AVE trains.

The promotion is valid for trips planned between Thursday, February the 13th and Monday the 14th, including return and single tickets.

These RENFE special offer schemes come under the slogan 'YoVoy' and the Valentine's discounts are dubbed 'YoVoy 2x'.

Tickets can be bought online, at station ticket booths, by telephone, or from travel agencies and all are eligible for the offer.

RENFE has been striving to make its rail travel services affordable and attractive to as many customers as possible, given that from the end of this year, the train transport network in Spain will be opened up to private competitors for the first time in its history.

Five arrested for car vandalism

Police in Almoradí made five arrests in the early hours of Sunday morning after receiving several calls about youngsters causing damage to parked cars. A total of eight cars parked in the town appeared to have had their wing mirrors smashed. Officers on the night shift made their way to the scene and arrested five of the alleged perpetrators, two of whom are minors.

New era for SAT Animal Rescue

The Mayor of Los Montesinos was called upon to cut the ribbon at the official opening of the new SAT charity shop in the town. SAT Animal Rescue opened its new charity shop on Calle Alejo Martínez. The charity has been operating for 30 years (10 of them in Los Montesinos), and in that time, has rescued over 9000 dogs. More information on the charity can be found at: www.satanimalrescue.com

It has been announced that the Generalitat intends to pool local police resources in some areas of the Vega Baja.

Local police in Dolores, Daya Nueva and Daya Vieja will combine for the joint delivery of this service. The three municipalities, which border each other, have the necessary requirements to share the police service which includes having a town with less than 40,000 inhabitants.

The sharing of police resources by those three municipalities, something which they all agree on, not only provides a fiscal saving for each Town Hall but also offers an improved service. The General Director of Local Administration of the Generalitat, Antoni Such, has discussed this matter with the Mayor of Dolores, Joaquín Hernández. The Generalitat will study the draft agreement and provide the improvements it deems necessary so that it can deliver the revised service as

soon as possible.

The draft of this agreement establishes that the combined association aims to jointly carry out the Local Police service in these Town Halls allocating at least two agents for each shift in a larger, but continuous territorial area. This is practically viable, as they are geographically adjacent and even interrelated in terms of population centres in certain areas. The purpose of this agreement is not only focused on saving money and material resources but also on maximising human resources and service provision as currently the local police in each municipality do not effectively cover all the services required to be performed each day. In the Vega Baja, for several months, Cox and Granja de Rocamora have operated a shared local police force which has worked well for the towns.

Dancers of all ages and nationalities came together last weekend to take part in the 'Vive Tu Sueño' Regional Dance Qualifier.

The sleepy little coastal town of Aguilas, Murcia, played host to the event and welcomed more than 500 dancers all ready to wow the audience and, more importantly, the judges, in a bid to gain a place in the coveted national grand final.

All types of dance were showcased inside the Aguilas Auditorium for the tenth annual competition hosted by Dancing Stars Events, from flamenco and freestyle to contemporary and classical ballet.

Amongst the competitors was local dance school, Totally Dance. The Benijofar-based dance studio had around 70 dancers and their families travel down to take part in its first ever competition.

They raised the roof and wowed the audience – and two of their three groups

were so highly marked that they received a place in the forthcoming national finals.

“It was an amazing achievement,” said Totally Dance owner and teacher Susan Faulkner. “It is the first time we have ever entered anything like this and we really didn't know what to expect. The standard was so high and we will watch and learn, adapt grow and continue to improve.”

The hard work continues now as the teams prepare for their next challenge in Avila, north-west of Madrid, as they take part in the national final at the end of March.

Cleaning up Rojales Rojales has unified the cleaning of the town centre and urbanisations with a 3.3 million contract. The City Council has tendered a four-year contract for the cleaning of the entire municipality. The service is currently split with municipal crews cleaning the centre and an external supplier contracted for the suburban roads. The Mayor says that the specifications are "ambitious" and will improve the service.

The current supplier Ginssa, has been responsible for cleaning the streets of the urbanisations for more than 10 years and this has included the expat enclave of Ciudad Quesada. This allowed municipal staff to focus on the urban heart of Rojales. This is a situation that the council, governed by PSOE , wants to change so that the service is completely commercial and will deal with the management of the public road cleaning service throughout the municipality, which has a population of around 17,000 inhabitants.

The specifications have already gone to tender for 2,678,230 euros (taxes included). This gives an estimated value of the contract amounting to 3,347,787 euros (inclusive) for four years of service and includes a possible extension of a further year.

The specifications call for the cleaning to be intensified on weekends and holidays in those areas where pedestrian traffic is continuous, where there is usually a lot of activity or a high concentration of people such as in areas

of leisure and mass youth entertainment, or in other public spaces that the bidding company deems appropriate. All aimed at improving the service currently provided.

The Mayor of Rojales, Antonio Pérez, says the requirements are "ambitious" and defends the decision to unify cleaning throughout the municipality, instead of separating the urbanisations and the town centre.

“It is a very elaborate and busy project so that the 500 streets and squares of Rojales are clean all year round,” said Pérez. "Rojales is a fairly complex municipality, with more than 200 kilometres of streets, and the technicians

have made a very detailed specification right down to the minimum sweep frequency and its type," he said.

The company that is currently in charge of the road cleaning of the urbanisations currently provides the service through a forced extension granted last July and is now subject to the tendering of a new contract. The company has been cleaning the streets of the urbanisations for more than a decade

with a remit that has practically become obsolete since during that time the number of homes and the streets of the urbanisations have changed considerably. Due to urban growth the demand for cleaning is now much higher.

Redeployment Over recent years Rojales has assumed a series of duties that historically were the responsibility of other administrations such as the Generalitat and the Diputación.

Therefore, municipal employees who are now responsible for street cleaning in the town centre will be redeployed in the parks and gardens department of the Town Hall once the new contract has been awarded to a company.

The road cleaning contract includes manual, mechanical and mixed sweeping, as well as street cleaning, maintenance of wastepaper baskets, cleaning of street furniture and special services, such as fairs, parties or public events.

A separate section is also dedicated to the cleaning required for the weekly market, the municipal cemetery and the industrial estates.

In Rojales, unlike in most municipalities, the road cleaning service is provided separately from the collection of garbage and urban solid waste, which is awarded to an outside company. Mayor Antonio Pérez believes that is provides a better service “because we give the opportunity for two different companies, each specialised in their area, to provide those different services”.

Local group take on a Berber charity project Andrea Prouse trekked Mount Toubkal in Morocco in June 2019. It was a really difficult trek with a tough descent, but Andrea and her fellow walkers were helped along the way by the trek leader – she described him as an incredible young man who went the extra mile to help everyone. Andrea told the Costa Blanca People, “We walked together lots along the trek and he told me all about what he does for his village, which is a very poor Berber village in the middle of nowhere. He helps so many people and he had been trying to raise money to put toilets and a playground in their

very primitive one roomed pre school, of which he is very proud.” After hearing the young man’s dedication, Andrew decided to try and help. She has gathered a team of ten people (she would like 12 so is still looking for a couple of people and a carpenter would be especially welcome). Already signed up are two engineers, an electrician and a plumber as well as a group of very willing ladies who will do all the labouring and painting. The group is all paying for their own flights and are raising a minimum of €1000 each to fund the work to be done on arrival. They will be

staying with local people, which will be a incredible experience.

Already, the fundraising has started with a charity lunch at Browns in La Zenia raising over €500 last week. To come, is a ‘Bling Ball’ at the Posh Club on February 20th. Tickets are just €25 per person and include a cava reception as well as a three course meal with wine and wonderful entertainment.

Generalitat approves more than 320,000 for DANA victims The Generalitat Valenciana will pay immediate direct aid for essential goods for an amount of 324,000 euros , as published recently by the DOGV. A total of 8,451 files have been registered, which will mean a disbursement of 13.5 million euros for the Generalitat. The deadline for requesting financial aid for goods and equipment ended on 31st December, so that, progressively, the victims, whose file has been approved, will receive the money from it. They are 1,500 euros of direct aid to the victims, and 3,000 euros more after the visit of an expert who verifies the damages.

According to the established procedure, the aid for those affected by the DANA is admitted to the applicants as the files are processed. In this way, the lists of beneficiaries are published in the Official Gazette of the Generalitat Valenciana (DOGV http://www.dogv.gva.es/es), which can be consulted daily. In addition, citizens' information on aid is provided in the telephone of the DANA Post-Emergency Office, 961 001 112; specifically, about

procedure and deadlines.

For the Generalitat it is "priority" to attend to all the people affected by the storm, as well as the actions that are being carried out in the Vega Baja region, in order to convert the area into a "resilient" territory to meteorological phenomena similar to DANA or cold drop last September.

Vehicles and homes In addition, there are other lines of aid such as those for the purchase of damaged vehicles, which are granted in case the car has been declared a total accident. In this case, 283 applications have been submitted. The Generalitat is also processing housing assistance for those affected by DANA; and in this case, three types are being granted: for total destruction of the dwelling, for damage to the structure of the dwelling, and for damage to it. The budget amounts to 30 million euros. In addition, there are rental aids for people whose homes have suffered serious damage. The total amount for this item is 500,000 euros.

Crazy Little Thing Calling all knitters…

Called Love Crazy Little Thing Called Love is very close to performance dates and all the members of Campoverde Theatre Group are excited about our latest supper show again to be presented at The Olympia Bar and Restaurant at Mil Palmeras. Important dates for your diary are the Thursday 20th, Friday 21st and Saturday 22nd February.

As usual we are raising money for two local charities and the chosen charities for this production will be The Alzheimer’s Association Torrevieja and also the Tasha Appeal to help with the high cost of her continuous care especially following the recent publicity about her needs.

Campoverde Theatre Group’s latest show takes a light heated and comic look at love, following the story of school yard crushes, finding your ideal partner then the reality of living with a partner. Many original sketches highlight some of the issues of living with the person you once

thought was the partner of your dreams.

The show progresses to the reality of partnerships in older age. The sketches are linked together with well loved and well known songs which will get everyone humming along with them. The theme is clearly This Crazy Little Thing Called Love with a clear emphasis on the word Crazy!

This should be an evening of fun filled entertainment so book soon and reserve your seats. A one course meal is included to make this a show a complete night out.

At a recent CARE group meeting, it was announced that Cruz Roja are setting up a project at its centre in Guardamar to support homeless people. HELP Vega Baja decided that it would like to support this important initiative and provided a donation of 5,000 euros towards the cost of renovation work the charity is planning but the support doesn’t stop there. Volunteers from the charity decided that they would also like to provide the homeless with some hand knitted blankets.

Michele Masson, President of the charity, said: “Our volunteers are always willing to go the extra mile and over the past couple of months many of

them have dug out knitting needles and made square after square with the end result being beautiful and warm blankets. We have also had interest from other people outside of the charity who would like to join in with the knitting. Although our knitters are mostly ladies, men with this hidden talent and youngsters are most welcome too. The knitting is not only providing wonderful blankets, we have noticed that it has given many people something new to focus on and several have asked if they could get together to knit.

“We would love to see this knitting project expand around the area which not only would enable us to offer even more blankets to the homeless but also possibly bring people together. If you are part of a group that gets together regularly, a school or maybe just a few friends that meet for coffee, why not consider taking the knitting needles with you and giving it a go. The squares measure 14 x 19cms each and if people want to make the full blanket we are making them 142x114cms.”

Once complete HELP Vega Baja volunteers will hand sew in labels into the blankets. Any donations of wool or needles would also be appreciated and these can be left at Help Vega Baja’s San Miguel Centre, Monday to Friday

between 10am and 1.30pm. So let’s get knitting for charity.

Help Vega Baja is a registered charity and helps people of all ages with all sorts of problems within the Vega Baja area from La Marina to Pilar de la Horadada. It has a centre at San Miguel de Salinas which includes a charity shop and a hire centre for mobility equipment and a helpdesk in La Marina. Each of these supplies a wide range of information and advice to members of the local community.

The charity has the support of a hospital visiting team which is able to visit the Vega Baja Hospital, near Orihuela and the Torrevieja hospital in Los Balcones upon request from the patient, relative or carer.

It also has a welfare officer who is able to offer advice and assistance, and its Connections team provides a 24hour confidential and emotional support helpline.

Events are held throughout the year to raise funds in order to support those in need. This includes charities and those unfortunate enough to find themselves facing financial difficulties.

Help Vega Baja is self-funding and obtains all its income from membership fees, orthopaedic equipment rental, donations and fund raising activities.

A personal story of alcoholism and recovery As a young teenager, and in my 20’s I was an avid and talented sports woman.

I really wasn’t interested in drink. I went to University and led a sporty, healthy lifestyle. I completed my studies and secured employment in University of Limerick, Ireland. I had a good job. I got married, had two children and somewhere in the middle of all this I realized that a glass of wine was a lovely way to relax after the hectic week. A glass or two helped quieten my busy head. As soon as I had the first sip, my worries slipped away. Friday night drinkies quickly turned into Friday and Saturday night and before long every night was Friday night.

My marriage broke up, I took a career break and the partying began. And with it the chaos. Very quickly, within a few short years, my life became completely unmanageable. I drifted from my family and friends and found a new circle of party animal friends, who I thought were great craic. I recall crossing the line during that phase, from drinking socially, to crazy non-stop blackout drinking. My very best friend was alcohol, and I couldn’t live with it, nor could I live without it. Trips to my beloved Spanish apartment became a complete nightmare and chaos followed me everywhere I went, with or without my children.

My children were, and still are, the two

most precious people in the world to me.

They are my universe, they are the apple of my eye, one for each eye. I recall one day, whilst cooking their dinner drunk, thinking that they would be better off without me. The cracks were beginning to show. I was finding it difficult to keep all the balls juggling. Job, kids, relationship, homework, hurling, football, gymnastics, while at the same time holding down a fulltime drinking habit.

The kids’ lifestyles were getting in the way of my drink. According to my fuzzy thinking, normal adult responsibilities were a complete nuisance, and interfering with my best friend, alcohol. I figured I could sell my house in Ireland, leave my children with their father, and move to Spain to drink my heart out. The race was on between Mother Nature and Alcohol, and Alcohol was winning!

I battled on for another 12 months, fighting the urge to have a drink, but losing every time. ‘I’ll just have one, just one’…. Never, ever did I achieve that goal.

In the end, one drink, always led to blackout. It is the grace of god my children were not harmed in the midst of this fogginess. My son who was 11 when I had my last drink, would anxiously beg me not to drink, but I couldn’t stop for him, anyone or anything else. It was all consuming and it broke my heart that I had no control, not even for my babies. I

could see the fear in their eyes, the pain in their souls, but I COULD NOT STOP. In August 2007 my family intervened, and I eventually threw in the towel. I was beat, and thank god I was willing to do whatever it took to get well. I am aware today that the ‘willingness’ was a complete blessing and one not everyone is lucky enough to get.

I was told in AA that I had the disease of alcoholism. To get and stay well, all I had to do is not drink alcohol!! WHAT!?

Surely they’d teach me how to drink like a lady again? How to control it? I’d have to take the odd drink, surely? How can I celebrate Christmas, my 40th, Easter, Halloween, How in God’s name can I go to Spain again and not drink???!!! No bottle (or two) of Vino Blanco with my menu Del Dia, no sangria by the pool, or cold al fresco pint at Torrevieja’s finest Irish bar? Nope, couldn’t do it. Or so I thought.

I have done it, and the journey has been amazing.

At my first AA meeting I was like a deer caught in headlights. Absolutely stunned.

All these people looked happy, they looked fresh, content and some hadn’t had a drink in years! I wanted what they had. I felt safe amongst them, and no longer alone. These people could, and would help me, and they wanted nothing in return. They were happy to see me come back. They were as happy to see

me, as I was them. They didn’t scold me, instead they shared their stories, and how life was completely different for them today. They said, keep coming back. And I did.

I haven’t had a drink in over 12 years, one day at time. I live an extremely happy, charmed, full life, with incredible things happening all the time. I never think of a drink, I am very grateful for the life AA has given me, and for what it has taken away.

My professional life has never been better, and I am in the lucky position to be able to make a difference to a lot of people through my involvement in sport, both as an educator and participant.

In AA there are no bosses, everything is suggested, the only requirement for membership is the desire to stop drinking. The door is always open and I feel safe and secure amongst members.

We are not saints, make no mistake, there are personality clashes, but the principles of AA will always reside over and above personalities. There are no bosses. We are all there for the same reason, to stay away from one drink, for one day. Like the survivors of the titanic, all coming from different backgrounds, education and various layers of rock bottom drinking. No differentiations are made, just identification. No matter what our story, we know that the end result was the same. Our lives had become completely

unmanageable because of alcohol and with AA we can stay away from one drink for one day.

San Miguel calls for protection of environmental land The Neighbourhood Association of San Miguel Archangel has urged the Ministry of Agriculture to immediately put into place, the promised demarcation of the border between areas of the town and the cattle route of the Escalona Colada. The regional government has promised to mark a border of four kilometres around the Mirador de San Miguel and Las Communicaciones.

In October 2019, the General Directorate for the Natural Environment, part of the Ministry of Agriculture, accepted the recommendation of the official ombudsman following a complaint by San Miguel Archangel to implement a clear demarcation line. However, nothing has been done.

The Neighbourhood group said: "It has been almost four months since the start-up agreement and the neighbourhood association, named in the procedure, has not received any notification of the start of the action.”

The association denounced to the Department of Agriculture a total of 14 infringements in this section of the Escalona. These include construction of residences, doors, walls, roads, reservoirs, fields of cultivation, which in the opinion of the association impedes passage through these roads.

Contrary to what happens in the provinces of Castellón and València, in Alicante most of these livestock routes, protected by a state law since the mid-1970s, are not defined. This is not only because of the need to deploy human and technical resources but also to avoid pressure from private owners and builders. The decision tof the Ombudsman serves as a reminder that "although the livestock routes are public domain they remain the property of the autonomous communities and are untouchable. The autonomous body added that "the livestock routes are the traditional tracks through which the livestock was run or would roam naturally but

can be used for other compatible and complementary uses in accordance with its nature and its purposes”.

The Generalitat concluded the Trustee has the “right and duty to investigate, both historically and administratively, the situation of the lands that are supposed to belong to the cattle routes in order to determine their effective ownership.”

Five cattle routes cross the municipality of San Miguel de Salinas. These cattle roads, classified and mapped since February 1993, are equivalent to a length of 33,651 meters.

However, according to the Neighbourhood Association, “this public heritage has not been demarcated nor, therefore, registered in the property registry”.

This situation, over the passage of time, has given rise to a large number of infringements by the owners of the adjacent farms that block, impede or use some of the land that is public and not private domain.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP After a positive end to last week thanks to the Bank of England holding interest rates, sterling was on the back foot at the beginning of this week due to the Prime Minister’s comments about the Brexit negotiations. Reports over the weekend that the PM intends to impose full border checks on imports and that there is “no need for a free trade agreement to involve accepting EU rules,” cost sterling half a cent in early trade and by the afternoon, it was on average 0.9% lower against the major currencies.

In response, the EU’s chief negotiator Michel Barnier stated that a "highly ambitious" trade deal is on offer if Britain signs up to rules preventing unfair competition.

Overall, the market took the view that the PM would be willing to walk away from the proposal and that the lack of alignment early on in the negotiations could be bad news for sterling. This overshadowed some positive PMIs later in the week.

Manufacturing came in at 50, fractionally higher on the month, construction gained four points to 48.4 and the services sector had the best news, coming in a point higher

than forecast at 53.9, the strongest reading since September 2018.

Despite a “robust and accelerated increase in new orders,” it wasn’t enough to help the pound, which was outshone by commodity-related currencies.

Across the Eurozone, the manufacturing PMI came in at 47.9 – once again, Greece delivered the best result at 54.4 and Germany struggled to approach the growth zone at45.3.

With regard to services, Germany’s PMI was much healthier than manufacturing, coming in at 54.2 and even last placed France made the growth zone at 51.0. The composite measures came in above 50, keeping the euro steady but little moved the euro this week with more dramatic developments elsewhere.

Similarly, there was no response to ECB President Christine Lagarde’s speech while accepting the Grand Prix de l’Économie 2019 award from Les Echos. There was nothing new in her speech other than an acknowledgement of the threat to global trade of the coronavirus. At the moment, the market’s focus appears to be on matters elsewhere and will be looking for more significant and positive news from Europe to support the central currency.

The accidental choir We spoke to Beverley Gollop this week, about an accidental choir formed recently, by chance but with wonderful consequences.

The group has already raised hundreds for charity and has big plans.

Beverley told us, “We are a group of twelve ladies that live

on the Entre Naranjos Urbanisation. We have regular get togethers by going out for meals and shows and are a high spirited bunch who love to have fun and enjoy each other’s company.

“Whilst at a birthday celebration we all started having a sing song and Janice Moore came up with the idea of forming a choir to raise money for charity. Initially we all laughed about it as we weren’t sure anyone would want to actually hear us sing in public, but we all then agreed it would

be wonderful to sing for a worthy cause. Janice then chose the name for our choir which is Coro de Gatas which in English reads Cat Choir! We discussed which charity we would all like to support and chose a local school called Apanee in Torrevieja for children with special needs. We

decided to hold our event on December 15th and had weekly rehearsals for 12 weeks leading up to it, each week getting better and better each growing with confidence.”

Beverley continued, “The big day finally arrived and we all dressed up as santas and elves, before nervously making our way to our first venue. We sang in seven bars around our urb, singing a mixture of Carols, Santa Baby and finished off with Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade which the audience participated in. Our audiences

were wonderful, so full of encouragement and support which helped with our nerves after singing at the first bar. We even had groupies that followed us on our journey around the urb. Graham and Eddie were great, our ‘Santas little helpers’, collecting donations from the audience.

We raised €747.20 which we were thrilled with at such kind generosity.”

Beverley explained, “Once the money was lodged into the school’s bank account we received an email from Victoria Morandeira who is the School Secretary. She expressed her thanks for our donation and said that the money received would be very well invested in the many treatments that all the children need at the school.”

“This has inspired us to carry on and we are due to do another fund raising event at the end of June and rehearsals will commence in April. This time it will be Summer related songs and we are all really looking forward to it.

ITV changes for May Changes are set to come in for the mandatory vehicle inspection required bi-annually for cars of four years old or more and annually for those over 10 years old. From 20th May this year, any cars of two years old or more – since

these need to go through their ITV inspection if they have ever been used as a hire car – will need their complete technical data passed on by the manufacturer.

The test will pay more attention to

the electronics in the vehicle, and ITV inspection centres, which are State-run, will need to have the necessary new equipment to do so.

These will allow them to enter the computer systems in new cars and

check information relating to emissions, ABS braking, assisted steering and airbags.

The changes have come at the instigation of the European Union, which aims to streamline testing methods and requirements across the 27 member States. More amendments are on the cards, which include being able to switch to a different test centre within the month after a fail, to carry out the test up to a month before the expiry day, and upgraded training for mechanics carrying out the inspections.

ITV tests do not have a set due date, but instead, are required to be carried out within a given month. Stickers must be displayed on the windscreen, which show the year the ITV expires, and the months along the top of the sticker will have one punched out – if, for example, this is January, the owner will be required to have passed the test before the end of January, but can do so on any date of that month.

Sometimes, when a vehicle passes its ITV, the examiner will refer on the report sheet to 'minor faults', which are not serious enough to warrant a fail but which will need to be corrected before the next ITV is due. Drivers are normally inside their cars when they are tested, and are given instructions – such as to stand on the brake, put the gearstick in reverse, switch on lights or indicators – and all mechanical functions are checked.

Although verifying liquid levels is not part of the test per se, an examiner may well flag up to an owner if they are low on oil or brake fluid. An ITV should not replace maintenance checks or a service, but older cars which are required to go through an ITV annually will normally come away from the testing centre with a good idea of what they need to do.

Fan belts and cam belts should typically be checked and, if necessary, changed every 60,000 kilometres, and it is worth checking the oil levels every month, although 21st-century registered cars on average only need their oil verified every 15,000 kilometres.

It is usually advisable to change the oil completely, and probably the filter, every 15,000 kilometres or, in older cars, every year even if the distance travelled is less.

Air filters, brakes, brake shoes and brake fluid should be checked at around the same frequency, and the latter three especially during the winter months.

Windscreen wipers should be examined after every summer, since the extreme heat in Spain at this time can cause the rubber to dry out and crack. Tyres are the most common cause of ITV failures, and it is worth checking these at least annually.The same brand of tyre must be used for each pair – front and back – and the tread should be approximately enough to insert a euro coin in them.

How to feng shui your home If you want to breathe more life into your living space by creating a happy, healthy and welcoming environment, then there's no better place to start than with the principles of feng shui.

The hall represents opportunities, therefore, ensure it is kept clutter-free so that the energy can circulate; place coats and shoes inside a closed cupboard so they don't stagnate the energy. To activate the beneficial chi in the hall, place a beautiful mirror and fresh flowers. Fresh flowers instantly uplift the energy of a space.

The kitchen is a vital space as its energy represents nourishment and relationship harmony for the occupants.

Ensure that you don't place the sink and cooker opposite each other as that can

lead to arguments between couples, as it creates a water and fire crash. The colours in the kitchen are also an important consideration – avoid too much black and red as that also causes a fire and water clash.

The position of the cooker is important for the nourishment of the occupants – ensure it is not positioned under a window or directly opposite the kitchen or front door.

To optimise the energy in this space, place a mirror on the wall to reflect the dining table and place fresh flowers on the table.

To encourage a restful sleep the bedrooms must be a light neutral colour and the beds must have a headboard and be positioned with the headboard against a solid wall. Ideally, the bed must not be in line with the bedroom door. Place bedside tables either side of the bed to provide support. Place curvy lamps and lightly fragranced candles on the bedside table to introduce some romantic energy.

The bathroom must always be kept clean with the door closed and toilet lid down. This is the area where wealth may get drained (depending on calculations) so introduce some plants in here, as plants soak in water which slows the flow of wealth draining away.

The front garden represents your future so ensure it is always kept beautiful. Plant beautiful flowers and plants and always keep it tidy. The back garden represents both health and wealth for the occupants so ensure it is always kept in good condition. Avacado plants make a comeback Back in the 1970s, when avocados first became popular, a trend emerged for sprouting their seeds, speared with three toothpicks and suspended in a glass of water. Indeed, enough people were evidently successful with this that if you take a look over the fence into many city gardens, it’s not an unusual sight to see an avocado tree in full fruit. Eventually outgrowing their living-room homes and relegated to being planted outside, these plants have thrived remarkably well.

But this way of germinating is odd and outdated. For starters, piercing their stones is a really effective method of introducing bacterial and fungal infections, which large seeds like avocados are already prone to.

Growing them in constant contact with water further ups the risk of rotting, due to excessive moisture.

Conversely, not keeping the water level topped up (which you’d need to do every day in a warm room) will mean the seed will just fail to

germinate altogether. Seriously, if you could pick a sowing technique with the highest likelihood of failure, it would be this.

The good news is that all you need to do to increase your chances of success and simultaneously reduce your workload is to half bury your seed in a pot of gritty seed compost, pointy end up. Give it a thorough watering, cover the pot with a plastic bag to seal in the warmth and moisture, and then leave it alone.

Kept in a warm place, like a wellinsulated windowsill, you should begin to see signs of germination in two to four weeks. This starts with the seed splitting open, followed by a tiny sprout emerging from the centre of the split a few days later. At this point, remove the plastic cover and keep it in a spot with bright, indirect light and you have a pretty (and evidently super trendy) houseplant for free in a matter of few weeks.

Spain’s first case of Coronavirus Spain has confirmed the country's first case of coronavirus after a German tourist was diagnosed on the remote island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands. The man is one of a group of six people taken into observation on the island and isolated after it was found some of them had come into contact with a man diagnosed with the virus in Germany, Spain’s Ministry of Health said.

The man who tested positive for the virus is “recovering well” at the island’s Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe Hospital, said Fernando Simón, of the Centre for Coordination of Health Emergencies at Spain’s Ministry of Health, on Sunday.

He explained that the patient had recently arrived on the island by plane via Tenerife and authorities were confident they had identified those people who he may have come into contact with who are considered most at risk of contagion.

This included people who had come into close contact with the diagnosed man, such as at a cafeteria on the island. Those considered to be at risk had been identified and told to report to medical authorities if they start to feel any symptoms.

Around 15 to 20 people were therefore being monitored both in La Gomera and Tenerife in case they showed any symptoms, although so far none had been reported.

But Simón urged calm,

explaining that the patient had been on the island a very short time before being isolated so the risk of mass contagion was low.

However, those who had been in contact with him on the plane over had yet to be identified – something that would happen

by Monday – but only those who were seat in the rows directly in front and behind the patient were considered at risk.

Canary Island authorities set up a dedicated free information line - 900 112 061- for those who believe they may be suffering symptoms or want advice about the coronavirus.

A suspected case of coronavirus in a boy of eight in Barcelona was discounted on Monday after tests came back negative.

There are 21 Spanish nationals

currently under quarantine in a hospital in Madrid after being repatriated from Wuhan in China.

None of the repatriated Spaniards have exhibited symptoms of the virus, but will remain quarantined at the Gómez Ulla military hospital in Madrid and held under observation for 14 days, the health ministry said.

The World Health Organisation declared the epidemic an international emergency last week, with cases confirmed in nearly 20 countries, including the United States, Britain and Germany.

The mortality rate of coronavirus is hovering around the 2 percent mark, much lower than the 9.6 percent mortality rate during the SARS outbreak in 2002/03.

Torremolinos

In 2013 it had 69,389 inhabitants, making it the sixth largest city in the province. The township has an area of 20 km² and a population density of 3,153.85 inhabitants/km², which is multiplied during the summer months. It is particularly popular with British, Irish and Scandinavian tourists and has a large British expatriate population.

Areas of the town are spotted with older high-rise residential buildings and hotels but height limits on new developments and a significant number of original old town properties, have kept the town centre much more open than other popular resorts such as Benidorm and Fuengirola.

The beach which extends for nearly 8 kilometres, has cycle and skating lanes alongside the fully illuminated promenade and features many chiringuitos and beach bars. The Eastern end of the beach known as Los Alamos has live dance music events throughout the Summer. The easternmost parts of the beach have kite surfing and windsurfing except under the flight path of the airport.

There are two separate beach lifts, a wheelchair accessible footpath and steps from the town centre to the beach.

Though there are many parking spaces on the beach road, it is almost impossible to park in the Summer months. The town centre does have many underground car parks however.

History Archaeological finds including human bones, tools, and pottery prove that the Torremolinos area was settled as early as the Neolithic Age. Some remnants are neanderthalians and dated 150,000 years old by radiocarbon dating.

According to the Egyptian Greek geographer Ptolemy, the Phoenicians had founded here a colony named Saduce, but the Romans are the most likely to have founded the current town, as shown by findings of edifices and a necropolis (from whose size it has been deduced that the settlement had around 2,000 inhabitants). They also built the road joining Cadiz with Málaga, passing through Torremolinos.

With the Moorish conquest of Spain, were introduced the mills from which the town takes its name (meaning “Tower of the Mills”). However, at the time the population was reduced; the tower was built by the Nasrid rulers of Granada starting from 1300. After the fall of Granada, the town remained subject to North African pirate attacks which lasted from the 18th century; during the War of Spanish Succession, the town was attacked by an Anglo-Dutch flotilla under the British admiral George Rooke and almost entirely destroyed.

The mills and the city were rebuilt in the early 20th century,

but the mill industry started to decline in the 1920s. It was largely replaced by an increasing tourist interest from 1928, particularly British visitors. Hotel Pez Espada opened in 1960. The first gay bar in Spain, Toni’s Bar, was founded in Torremolinos in 1962.

Pre-Roman According to Ptolemy, Phoenicians built the city of Saduce next to Torremolinos. The Romans constructed a road to connect Gades (Cádiz) with Malaca (Málaga). In the 1990s a Roman necropolis was discovered with 23 graves at the “San Luis build” at Cantabria’s square, which confirm the existence of village with 2,000 years old.

Middle Ages Around 1300, the Muslim dynasty of the “Nazríes”, which governed Málaga between the 13th and 15th centuries, built the defensive tower that can be seen at the end of San Miguel Street. The tower is 12 metres (39’37 ft.) tall and was built with earth. It is composed of two floors and watch windows to the sea and a terrace.

Before French revolution After the Christian conquered the kingdom of Granada, Torremolinos was attacked by pirates until the 18th century.

During the War of Spanish succession, an Anglo-Dutch fleet, commanded by the British Admiral George Rooke, looted and burned the houses and mills and destroyed all of Torremolinos. A census of 1,769 shows a population of 106 people.

Modern age During the first half of the 19th century the town was rebuilt and by 1849 there were 14 mills, a fuller mill Kraft paper and 785 inhabitants. With the demise of the mill, Torremolinos became a small fishing village until the end of the 1950s when it became one of the first tourist centre in Costa del Sol. In the 1950s many celebrities visited Torremolinos such as Grace Kelly, Ava Gardner, Marlon Brando, Orson Welles and Frank Sinatra.

In 1959 Pez Espada hotel was opened, the first luxury hotel along the coast. In the following years, new hotels, nightclubs and others tourist establishments changed the face of the town and its beaches. By the year 1965, Torremolinos had become consolidated as a major tourist destination.

Why tells lies I wonder if you can shed some light on why a family member tells lies and exaggerates so much. Throughout their life they have always been one to tell porkies, and now when the topic of certain conversation concerning members of the extended family arise (instigated by them), they are such a braggart and especially feel the need to embellish on facts; exaggerating on what they earn, how much their house is worth. Over the years we’ve always laughed it off because it’s been so obvious, and the person is always caught out, but it would be interesting to know why people do these things.

People tend to exaggerate, and even on behalf of other family members because they themselves feel inadequate or feel inadequate on behalf of another person. Telling lies and inflating information makes them feel good and helps them feel they have ‘got one over’ on the person they are with. They may do it as an intention to make the other person feel bad. If this practice has continued for many years as you say it has, then it reveals they have been feeling this way for a long time and that their feelings have not changed. They may have always had a problem with you and your achievements.

People can tend to exaggerate when they feel like an underachiever or threatened by someone who they deem is better than them or more successful, or in this case on behalf of another member of the family. This is a kind of exaggeration by proxy, and is very interesting. Your longer letter points out that before this person started embellishing on behalf of these particular family members, years previously the same behaviour was employed with regard to their parents. You may find it tiresome, however you know what this person is doing, and why they are doing it. Finding amusement in this behaviour is a good way of dealing with it.

US warns travellers of possible sexual assault in Spain The United States Embassy in Spain has issued a security alert on its webpage warning about an increase in sexual assaults and advising US travellers to take precautions during their stay in Spain.

“The Spanish Ministry of Interior reports a steady increase in the number of sexual assaults

nationally over the past five years.

This includes a rise in sexual assault against young US citizen visitors and students throughout Spain,” reads the alert.

“US citizen victims of sexual assault in Spain can find it very difficult to navigate the local criminal justice system, which differs significantly from the US

system,” adds the statement. “The US Embassy and Consulate General urge US citizen students and visitors to take precautions against sexual assault during their stay in Spain.”

Recommendations include drinking responsibly and travelling with friends or family members.

Sluggish January sees jobs slashed The first month of the year is never good for the Spanish job market. Even when the economy is growing robustly, Social Security affiliations drop and unemployment spikes.

It was no different in 2020, when the number of contributors to the Social Security system – a measure of job creation – fell by 244,044 people, the biggest drop for a month of January for several years, since 2013.

However, the overall number of contributors to Social Security remained above 19 million, according to figures released recently by the Social Security Ministry.

Registered unemployment rose by 90,248 from December, making this the worst month of January since 2014. There are now 3.25 million people signed up as unemployed, according to the Labour Ministry.

After Christmas, many seasonal hirings in retail and hospitality come to an end. So do many other contracts signed for one natural year. Together with the economic slowdown (motor vehicle registration, which is a good indicator, fell nearly 8 percent in January), these factors have made this the worst month of January in some time.

The figures are better compared with January 2019, since job creation grew by 1.83 percent, but even then, it is the first time since the summer of

2014 that job growth is under 2 percent.

The figures were released on the same day that the Spanish Cabinet held its weekly meeting and one of the issues on the agenda was approval of the minimum salary hike. This is being set at €950 a month after negotiating the terms with employers and unions. Spanish autism study makes ground­breaking discovery In the largest ever genetic study into autism, researchers at Madrid's Gregorio Marañón Hospital have successfully identified 102 genes after analysing more than 700 patients.

Some 35,000 individuals took part in the study, including people with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) and also mentally-disabled persons with neuro-developmental delay (NDD), plus confederates and scientists.

And 30 of the genes identified are completely new. ASDs cover a multitude of neurological differences – there is some debate over whether Asperger is a form of high-functioning autism, and it is often the most 'invisible' on the spectrum as those with it lead normal lives and are often of very high intelligence and abilities, whilst other, more severe strains can mean the patient is, in medical and psychological terms, retarded (typically characterised as with an IQ of 70 or less) meaning they need round-theclock care.

Some autistic people are nonverbal and show developmental delays, although at the higherfunctioning end of the spectrum, advanced development is often a feature.

Mental disability or learning

difficulties are not necessarily associated with autism per se, but the two often overlap in the severely-autistic.

Until now, it has often been questioned whether autism is passed on through generations – in the case of high-functioning autism, or Asperger's parents, their children will often receive the same diagnosis.

But the Gregorio Marañón study has found both 'rare', or unrelated, genes, as well as hereditary genes, involved in both ASDs and NDD. In fact, the principal genes involved in ASDs are not inherited from either parent, the team reveals.

A group of 24 genes involved in neurological communication were found to affect individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders exclusively, whilst another, wider group of 58 genes was found to be present in individuals with ASDs and generalised NDDs or mental disabilities combined.

In addition to the laboratorybased scientists, the research involved investigators from the Mental Health and Psychiatry Institute at the hospital – the autism team on the Child and Teenager Psychiatric Service played a major role in the Autism Sequencing Consortium (ASC).

The Gregorio Marañón has a complete and all-round programme for supporting ASD

patients – a pioneering scheme that carries out over 3,000 consultations a year and receives around 300 new referrals every year. Patients studied in the sequencing research partly came from this programme.

According to the report on the research, published in Cell magazine, the genetic study has enabled scientists to differentiate between the DNA makeup responsible for ASDs, and the genes that cause generalised NDDs. The results appear to show that these two conditions exist independently but that a combination of the two sets of genes are what leads to those with severe autism often being mentally disabled or suffering learning difficulties and slower development.

Diagnoses of autism have increased dramatically in recent years, due to improved methods of detecting the condition.

Much work is still needed in diagnosing autism, especially high-functioning autism or Asperger's, in women and girls, since the vast majority are overlooked. Statistically, only 20 percent of people with autism or Asperger are female, since diagnosis focuses on 'malebrained' behaviour due to historic studies having used only male volunteers.

Britons getting out before Brexit ‘drawbridge’ goes up

Campaigners for the rights of British nationals in Spain have reported a rise in the number of inquiries from people rushing through plans to establish residency in the country before the Brexit “drawbridge goes up”.

Sue Wilson, the founder of campaign group Bremain in Spain, says now that Brexit is “concrete and is happening” they are seeing evidence of Britons “expediting their plans” for retirement or a career move to Spain.

Under the withdrawal agreement British nationals can settle in another EU member

state right up to 31st December and claim lifetime rights as EU citizens. They will be entitled to the same rights as those expats that have lived in Spain for several years, providing they have registered as official residents before the deadline.

This means being issued with an official recidencia certificate.

“We have people inquiring what the rules are and we are saying to people that as long as they move before 31st December they will have the same rights as those of us who are already here.

It is in the withdrawal agreement,” says Wilson.

“Even if you haven’t reached pension age and you have paid in for enough years to make you eligible you will have the right to an uprated pension for life under the withdrawal agreement.”

Not all rights are guaranteed and the campaign group British in Europe has urged Brussels and London to secure those areas that have yet to be negotiated, which include freedom of movement and the right to return to the UK with an EU family member after Brexit. But the rights to study, work and retire remain for those moving before 2021.

The proportion of London renters who come from European Union countries has slumped by almost a third since 2017, new figures have revealed.

In 2017 almost 30 percent of tenancy agreements in the capital were signed with EU citizens but by last year, after many months of turmoil over Brexit, this had fallen to 21 percent.

Over the same period the proportion of tenancies signed with British citizens has jumped from 46.5 percent to 59 percent. The data, from property technology company Goodlord, is one of the clearest indications yet that London has become far less attractive to people from the European bloc. The biggest drops were on the suburban fringes of London where many migrant workers from Eastern Europe made their homes because of the relatively low cost of accommodation.

The largest fall of all was in Ilford IG postcodes, where the proportion of EU renters collapsed from 34.9 percent to

14.9 per cent over two years.

There has also been a huge decline in Bromley BR postcodes, where the proportion of Europeans halved from 28.6 percent to 13.9 percent.

The drops were far smaller in central London with west central

WC postcodes seeing the proportion of European renters falling by just three percentage points, from 23.1 percent to 19.8 percent.

Across all 20 London postcode districts the proportion of Europeans becoming tenants fell in 19 with just Dagenham DA postcodes seeing a small rise.

Goodland chief operating officer Tom Mundy said: “The EU referendum result has had a clear impact on the letting markets in London and the UK at

large. We’ve seen the number of EU nationals signing leases steadily decreasing across the board, meaning UK residents now represent a greater proportion of tenants across the whole of London.

“This is a cause for concern as the talent and spending power of Europeans has looked elsewhere for a place to call home ever since the Brexit result was announced.”

Today’s data follows figures from the Office for National Statistics last year showing that the number of EU citizens moving to the UK for work has halved since the referendum in June 2016.

The total sank from 190,000 in the year to June 2016 to 92,000 in the year to last March.

Employers in sectors such as hospitality, construction and healthcare have said it has become increasingly hard to recruit and retain staff from the European Union over the past three years.

Clifton backs girlfriend Dooley to be next Strictly host Strictly Come Dancing pro dancer Kevin Clifton has publicly backed his girlfriend, the cheery TV presenter and documentary maker Stacey Dooley, to be the next host of the Saturday night show. He's now on the record as saying that when either Tess Daly and/or Claudia Winkleman 'decide to pack it in' that Stacey would be an ideal replacement.

The 32 year-old Luton-born star is proving to be quite the hit at the moment as she hosts the Strictly tour

up and down the country. And Kevin thinks he's seen enough to prove that his girlfriend has what it takes to slip into Claudia or Tess's shoes.

The couple got together back in 2018 when they danced their way to lifting the famous Glitterball trophy, much to the nation's delight.

Claudia Winkleman has thought about the prospect of leaving and has previously said that were she or Tess to decide to quit their high-profile hosting gig, they'd do so together.

"We are confirmed to come back this year," she said. "She's my girl. How could I ever stand there without her? I would miss her terribly. We stay? We go? We do it together."

Claudia also said that she is forever aware that the axe may fall. "I feel like I’ve already had too long a run. I am incredibly lucky. I don’t want to sound like a d**khead, but that’s how I feel. I appreciate it!"

Last month Kevin suggested that he may well quit the hit dancing show in

the near future too. He made the shock admission on BBC Breakfast, saying: "it’s always like a clean sheet of paper every year. It’s not like, 'Oh I’m doing it for the next five years.'"

"They will call us at some point and say: 'This is our plan for this year,'" he continued. "I don’t know about Anton Du Beke length of time because Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton that is a long time."

LACTOSE FREE DESSERTS STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING

DAIRY FREE VANILLA ICE CREAM

Ingredients

Method below for ice cream maker and ‘manual’ if you don’t have an ice cream maker.

For the pudding • 100 g non-dairy butter or marg (flora, for example) • 100 g light soft brown sugar • 200 g pitted dates • 200 g or ml non-dairy milk – almond milk works well • 1 tsp vanilla essence • 200 g self-raising flour • 1 tsp baking soda • 100 g walnuts, chopped For the sauce • 100 g non-dairy butter or marg (flora, for example) • 200 g light soft brown sugar • 50 g or ml non-dairy milk – again, almond milk works well in the sauce too • 1 tsp vanilla essence

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 180c 2. To make the pudding mixture, put the ‘butter’ and sugar in a large mixing bowl and stir to combine.

3. Chop the dates as finely as possible and add to a saucepan along with the ‘milk’ and vanilla essence. Simmer for 3-5 minutes, stirring constantly and crushing the dates until they break apart and become soft.

4. Add the date mixture to the ‘butter’-sugar mixture in the bowl and stir to combine. Add the self-raising flour, the baking soda and the chopped walnuts and stir to combine. The

consistency should be like a very soft peanut butter.

5. Line a baking dish or cake tin with a little ‘butter’ and then line with baking paper.

6. Pour the pudding batter into the baking dish, smooth it out and cook in the oven for around 30 minutes. The top should have darkened and be dry to the touch.

7. Insert a toothpick or small knife into the centre of the pudding. If it comes out dry, the pudding is ready. If not, cook for a further 510 minutes or until it is cooked through.

Allow to cool.

8. Once cooled, pierce all over with a toothpick.

This allows the sauce to soak into the pudding.

9. To make the sauce, Add all of the sauce ingredients to a saucepan. Heat on med-high heat until the butter is melted and the sugar dissolved. Bring to a very gentle simmer and leave it to simmer for 5 minutes without stirring, adjusting the heat as necessary.

10.Thoroughly stir the sauce and then pour half all over the pudding. Use a spoon to help spread it out.

11.To serve, you can microwave individual slices to warm them and then pour over the remaining sauce.

2 x 400g cans coconut milk (not light) 175g caster sugar 1 tsp sea salt flakes 1 vanilla pod or 1 tbsp vanilla bean paste 2 tbsp cornflour a pinch turmeric

Directions Pour most of the coconut milk into a saucepan, reserving a splash in a small bowl for later. Add the sugar, salt and turmeric (for colour) to the pan. Cut the vanilla pod in half lengthways (if using) and scrape the seeds out of both sides with the side of the knife. Put the seeds and the pod, or vanilla paste, into the pan. Warm on a low heat for 10 mins until the sugar has melted and the mixture starts to steam.

Mix the cornflour with the reserved coconut milk in a small bowl until smooth. Pour into the hot milk, and continually whisking, heat for another 5-10 mins until the mixture thickens to a pourable custard consistency. Strain into a bowl, and cover. Leave to cool, then chill for at least 2 hrs.

Pour the chilled mix into an ice cream maker, and churn for 20-30 mins until you get a soft scoop ice cream. Transfer to a sealable container and freeze for up to 3 months until ready to serve. If you don’t have an ice cream maker, pour the chilled mix into a wide-based plastic tub or dish.

Freeze for 2-3 hrs, stirring the mix every 20 mins with a fork, to break up any large ice crystals, until soft ice cream. Transfer to a smaller tub and freeze until ready to serve. Woman dies in cake­ eating contest in Australia A woman has died after taking part in a cake-eating competition in Queensland.

The woman, aged 60, reportedly choked and had a seizure during the event at a hotel in the south east of the territory.

Hotel staff were quick to respond, giving the woman CPR and calling emergency services, according to 10 First News Queensland.

News that a 750ml bottle of beer is selling in a Manhattan bar for the equivalent of 114€ may sound like a tale of fools and their money being easily parted. However, the beer in question is Belgian brewery Oude Beersel’s Bzart, an 8 percent lambic, a wildfermented ale aged and blended over several years and, in this case, unusually charged with champagne yeast. Lambic production is costly, volumes finite and the US’s growing interest in sour beer means prices have soared, in part due to their increasingly labyrinth distribution.

“There’s huge demand for a very limited supply,” says Jonny Heyes, owner of Manchester’s Port Street Beer House, where some Belgian beers can cost £40. He justifies such prices by making what, in craft beer circles, is a common comparison between beer and wine: “In terms of work and ingredient costs, it’s no different to a £40 bottle of wine and, like vintage wine, blending lambics produces a singular expression of that beer. It won’t be the same next year.”

Lambics are so “niche”, says Heyes, that they barely have an impact on broader beer culture.

Arguably, though, there is something pernicious in that comparison, in craft beer’s pushing of measured, winestyle connoisseurship over

traditional British pint culture. It adds a layer of perceived prestige to beer that is easily exploited to normalise higher prices. Not always justifiably.

And for a drink that most consume faster than wine.

This is particularly true in high-end restaurants that now sell refined craft beer in smart glassware, where, due to their imposing 70-90 percent markups on drinks, you can find yourself paying £9 for fairly ordinary beer. Yes, that cost also covers the restaurant’s rent, business rates, swanky interiors

and staff, but that price hike would not have been possible had that false equivalence between beer and wine not become common.

As Heyes concedes, there is now a backlash within craft beer against exotic or limitededition beers that “end up costing £15 a pint”. “There’s a movement back to: ‘I just want a nice pint for a decent price’” and here in Spain we can all give a sigh of relief that the madness hasn’t reached these shores and we can all enjoy a beer or wine at a reasonable price!

New dementia research Older adults who have sleep issues have nearly a 30 percent increased risk of developing dementia, according to a new meta-analysis. The research analysed data on 51 studies of middle-aged and older people in North America, Europe, and East Asia to see if there was a link between sleep issues and mental health over time.

The researchers discovered that a slew of common sleep problems were linked to a higher risk of developing dementia.

People with insomnia had a 27 percent increased risk of developing dementia. Those who had sleep inadequacy, which is defined by not getting enough sleep, were 25 percent more likely to develop dementia. People who had sleep inefficiency, i.e. they spent too much time awake in bed, had a 24 percent higher risk of dementia. And those with Sleep Apnea, a potentially serious sleep disorder where breathing stops and starts at night, had a 29 percent higher risk of memory loss.

Dementia is a term that’s used to describe the loss of cognitive functioning, such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning, as well as behavioural abilities to the point where it interferes with someone’s daily life and activities, according to the National Institute on Aging (NIA). There are different forms of dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy body dementia,

frontotemporal disorders, and vascular dementia. People with dementia can develop issues with memory, language skills, visual perception, problem solving, self-management, and the ability to focus and pay attention.

Lead study author Wei Xu, MD, PhD, a professor of neurology at China’s Qingdao University believes that sleep problems might cause inflammation in the brain that can eventually lead to dementia. It also might reduce the efficiency of the brain’s metabolism, like the brain’s ability to transfer waste through its glymphatic system, which could lead to a loss of neural cells, he says. Sleep problems also may lead to the atrophy (or shrinkage) of important areas of the brain, like the hippocampus, which regulates motivation, emotion, learning, and memory, explains Dr. Xu. To lower your risk of dementia: • Try to get better quality sleep.

• Don’t sleep for too long or too

short period of time. Everyone has different sleep needs, but the National Sleep Foundation recommends that adults between 25 and 64 get 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night, and adults 65 and over score 7 to 8 hours each night.

• Nap for less than an hour.

• Try to regulate your sleep patterns to avoid being sleepy during the day - in other words, go to bed and wake up at roughly the same times each day.

• If you’re diagnosed with a condition like Sleep Apnea, get treated for it.

Of course, there are many factors that can lower your risk of developing dementia, and sleep management may only be one.

Over­55s increasing activity levels more than other age groups

People aged 55 and over are improving their physical activity levels more than any other age group.

A report commissioned by Age UK shows that older people are leading the way when it comes to improving their activity levels, with increases higher than any other adult age group year on year since 2015 and 2016. In comparison, improvements in exercise levels plateaued or decreased for age groups under 55 during the same period.

The figures, taken from Sport England's Active Lives Adult Survey, showed that improvement in activity levels among people aged more than 75 years old were up 4.7 percent in 2018/9 from 2015/6, the highest increase. The activity increase between those aged 55 and 74 was 3.4 percent for the same period, the second-highest increase.

However, 27 percent in the 55-74

group and 49 per cent of over-75s are reported as being inactive. "Even small amounts of physical activity can make a difference to a person's health, lowering the risk of developing serious conditions such as heart disease, stroke, and certain cancers," said Caroline Abrahams, charity director for Age UK. "Along with lowering risks of dementia and maintaining thinking skills in later life, performing exercises that improve muscle strength can also reduce the risk of falls by improving posture, coordination, and balance.

"Often older people feel that regular physical activity is not for them but even people who are immobile or unwell can feel the benefit. We don't expect everyone to run the marathon and it's not appropriate that they do, simply doing some stretching exercises while sitting in a chair is a help."

ANPR Enters Service Last week, 30 new cameras entered into service in the road safety armoury of the Guardia Civil, which were used to check number plates as vehicles pass, and then ensure that the ITV, insurance and other mandatory elements of the vehicle´s data were up to date.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition, or ANPR, has been a success for traffic police across Europe, including the United Kingdom, but is only just coming into service in Spain following an extensive testing period in various parts of the country.

Traditionally, the Guardia Civil relied on one officer driving a vehicle and the second operating their computerised systems to manually check the characteristics of vehicles. With these new cameras the checks are automatic and flag up problems to the officers making roadside checks more proactive and accurate, speeding up the process whilst also making sure that those who are legally operating are not unduly inconvenienced.

The cameras entered service as part of the routine campaign which monitors vehicles for the mandatory technical inspection, as well as ensuring the vehicles are in a safe and roadworthy state.

As the technology in vehicle design is advancing at a fast rate, the risk of death or serious injury is multiplied by two when comparing incidents that occur with vehicles 10 to 15 years old, in relation to vehicles less than 5 years old, which is why the proper maintenance of all safety elements becomes an essential activity.

This situation is of great concern to

the DGT, which is why the annual calendar of campaigns includes one dedicated exclusively to the monitoring of the conditions of vehicles on roads.

Correct maintenance of a vehicle contributes decisively to ensure adequate safety conditions throughout its useful life. These safety conditions are periodically verified in the technical inspections and hence their verification. In the last telematic verifications carried out, for example, it was detected that 1.64% of the vehicles did not have a valid ITV certificate.

It is estimated that more than one million of the vehicles, 5% of all those on the road, have serious defects in the wheels, mainly because they have a tread depth below the legal minimum of 1.6 mm; have irregular wear due to bad suspension, incorrect alignment or the wrong pressure. It is also estimated that vehicles used professionally, such as trucks and vans, have a higher rate of defective tyres.

Tyres constitute the only part of the vehicle in contact with the road. They are responsible for ensuring adhesion in thrust, braking and lateral sliding. They also ensure that the direction of travel of the vehicle is as desired by the user and the damping of pavement

imperfections. It is recommended that the groove depth be at least 3 millimetres. The legal limit is 1.6 millimetres.

It is also necessary to regularly check the cold tyre pressure and the spare wheel, as well as check for possible air leaks from the valves. The cap constitutes an element of tightness, so its use is essential.

The purpose of vehicle lights is not only to see, but also to be seen, since each vehicle is, in practice, an obstacle for others, so the definition of its presence is also significant.

So that driving is carried out in safe conditions it is advisable to pay special attention to the use and maintenance of the headlights, to achieve, on the one hand, enough light and, on the other, not to dazzle other road users.

It is also worth noting that the bulbs reduce their intensity with use, so they must be changed every 40,000 kmor every 2 years and must be changed two by two, because their use is symmetrical in most cases.

It is also crucial to ensure the lights are always clean and clear.

The number plate must be free from obstructions, must also be kept clean, and the light on the rear number plate must function correctly. You also must not tamper with the design or layout. If the number plate cannot be read or is obstructed you face a 200 euro fine, but if it is tampered with in any way the fine could be 6,000 euro and the loss of points, such is the importance.

You must also make sure that the windscreen is free from damage and that all windows are always clear and clean . The windscreen in particular is a major part of the vehicle´s infrastructure and so any damage could weaken the structure and result in more damage to the vehicle in the event of

NINO becomes a Legend at ELCHE CF – Officially Elche CF travelled the 900km to Lugo for this weekend’s match, which would prove to be an epic encounter. Relegation placed Lugo fought for their place in the Segunda and, although they did not dominate play they were the only ones to score for the first 85 minutes!

During the first half, Elche had a couple of well worked opportunities, all of which should have been a given for goals, but they failed to convert.

In the 13th minute Yanis Rahmani slipped one past Edgar #13 to make a 1-0 scoreline. VAR came into play in the 41st minute when Lugo shot and scored. The Elche CF players protested that a foul had previously been committed against Juan Cruz #23, which the referee then awarded, removing the goal and stopping the celebrations of the Albivermellos fans (well done the ref!!).

The second half continued much the same as the first half, with Elche having 63% possession but failing to convert the all important shot. Lugo were more successful in this department. 26 year old José Ángel Carrillo, from Murcia, scored on the 61st minute.

ABBEY ANGLING Our 5th round of The Abbey Angling Cup was fished on the El Bosquet Complex Section B on the 4th February.

It was a good turn out for the time of year with seventeen anglers on the bank, and it was a lovely day with temperatures up to 25 degrees.

Mick Hill drawn on peg 28 took the top spot with 13.600kgs; he had two very good Carp boosting his weight, 2nd place went to Lennie Bolton on peg 31 with 9.680kgs and following up in third was another of our new members Tony Felstead with 9.260kgs themselves for a zero points game and a drop from the play off zone. Then the legend that is the 39 year old captain, Nino #7 struck in his 500th game for the club. He scored twice in two minutes!! First with a magic shot from the 18 yard line, and second with a majestic header.

Not only did he secure a point for the club, he also became Elche CF's all time top goal scorer!!

With 2 more goals than Pierita's 130, a record which has stood since the 1950's. We love you Nino, we do, oh Nino we love you!

There was a marked change in the weather with the temperature having dropped back down to 16 degrees, but it kept fine and the road following the recent storms had partly dried out under the bridge, with no dirty wheels to deal with this week!!

Imanyo Golf Society Torrevieja Triathlon Club “Lesley’s Myeloma Shield” at Altorreal

The youngest members of Torrevieja Triathlon Club had a successful day on Sunday when they travelled the short distance to Pilar de la Horadada for the IV Duatlón Escolar.

The team of 16 youngsters aged from just 7 up to 14 were put through their paces with a run-bike-run format of varying lengths according to the age category. Torrevieja’s triathletes

train three times per week and the older group also engage in extra bicycle training on Saturdays.

Family, friends and trainers were also there on the day to cheer the young athletes along the way – all of whom were very proud of the children for such wonderful dedication and achievement. Above all, they had tremendous fun!

Imanyo Golf Society Raises €1270 for chosen charities Village School Daya Nueva, S.A.T.S. Animal Rescue and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care.

Imanyo Golf Society started in October 2014 and has now reached the membership of 100 members.

This was the second time we have played for the Lesley’s Myeloma Shield with the day sponsored by Geoff Ham; unfortunately Geoff couldn’t make it over from England this year due to commitments.

We had a low turnout compared to last year but the competition was still very close all round. We played at our favourite course Altorreal; the weather was light rain on arrival but by the time we teed off it had stopped but remained cloudy, yet again the course was in perfect condition, the format was singles full handicap Stableford split into two groups.

Winner of the Myeloma Shield came from group B and was won on count back, this is the first time he has won a singles competition since the society started and the winner was “The Joker”

Mick Billins with 36 points, runner up from group B was “Golf Simulator” Donald Main also 36 points. Winner of group A also on count back was “Mr Twelve Trees“ Steve Ayre with 28 points, runner up was “The Wine Collector” Brian Court also on 28 points. Nearest the pins were won, hole 2 in two shots “Golf Simulator” Donald Main, hole 8 ”The Wine Collector” Brian Court, hole 10 “Sandy” Terry Burton, hole 14 in Tree Shots! “Mr Twelve Trees” Steve Ayre, and hole 17 Tom Goulden.

We have raised money for various charities each year and in 2019 we decided to support the following three charities, they were Daya Nueva Village School, S.A.T.S. Animal Rescue and A.E.C.C. Cancer Care. The money was raised with various events, raffles, football cards and extremely kind donations and we managed to raise a fantastic €1,270 therefore the village school and S.A.T.S received €400 each and €470.00 went to A.E.C.C. cancer care, the money raised for A.E.C.C. was all done on the golf day that was sponsored by plane parking, we raised the money with balls in the water, football card and a raffle where all the prizes were donated. At the announcement of how much had been raised Managing Director of Plane

Parking, Nick Baker, said that he would make the money up to €1000 as without the A.E.C.C his wife, Marianne, might not have been so lucky.
