New beach police force T

he summer months bring an influx of visitors to the coast and along with the increase in population comes an increase in related crime and safety issues. To ensure this summer is as hassle free as possible, Orihuela Town Hall is hiring 12 temporary police officers to heighten police presence in Orihuela Costa from May to December. Six of the twelve of these officers will be specifically attached to Orihuela Costa (the others patrolling other areas of the municipality). Those put on beach patrols will be given bicycles to make their rounds and will be particularly focused on unlicensed and illegal sellers on the beaches and also on the pavements and beachfront promenades. Using bicycles allows officers to move more easily, especially at the beach, and allows greater contact with people, giving greater proximity which is a key aim of the unit. The urbanisations of the Orihuela coast will also have greater police surveillance this summer as the

Department of Public Safety plans to create a more visible police presence generally to improve safety and security. Ramรณn Lรณpez, Councillor for Citizen Security explained that the additional officers will aim to bring the Police force closer to the community. Their role will be to prevent theft and robbery with their presence also acting as a deterrent. They will also clamp down on the sale of food and drink without permission, as well as the beach masseurs that are regularly seen on Orihuela Costa beaches throughout the tourist season. Counterfeit clamp down However, the main objective of the officers will be to tackle and reduce the Continued on page 2

Continued from page 1 presence of the ‘blanket’ sellers, who peddle counterfeit designer handbags, trainers and clothing - especially in Aguamarina. Nicknamed because they lay their wares out on the pavement on a blanket, making them easier to scoop up and run when the Police appear. Local residents and business owners have been demanding a greater police presence for more than two years as each summer more than 60 tablecloth sellers take over the street at Cabo Roig and Aquamarina. It is also reported that the presence of the illegal sellers has brought with it an increase in the sales of drugs and is having a detrimental effect, driving families away from the bars and restaurants. The Councillor said that he recognises that completely eradicating the "blanket sellers" in Orihuela Costa will be a difficult task "but the key, as happened last summer, is a police presence”. If the sellers see a police officer the sellers won’t lay out their wares. The Councillor also asked members of the public to support the initiative by boycotting the sellers. If they are no buyers, then there can be no sales and eventually no sellers.

This new Police unit will also have prominent presence in the street markets held in the areas. These markets attract the presence of hundreds of people, especially holidaymakers. The twelve interim officers, will be just some of the new additions that the Local Police will have to reinforce the workforce.

"The intention is to have 40 agents more than the current level throughout this year," said Councillor Lopez. “The current workforce is made up of 127 agents who do an immense job, as there is no proportionality between the number of officers and the size of the municipality or population that Orihuela has.”

Eden Rock bought by French firm A French real estate operation has bought the abandoned Eden Rock building with plans to transform it into a hotel. The building was first constructed in 1970 and is a landmark of sorts in the area. The building, which was used as an adult ‘club’ for many years has been uninhabited for almost a decade and in that time has fallen into a state of disrepair. Reports indicate that the French investors are planning a total renovation of the site and will open a hotel, although the plans have yet to be made public. If repurposed as a modern hotel, it would boast one of the best locations along the Torrevieja coast, perched on a cliff overlooking Cala de la Zorra. The building is located on a 430 square metre site and has three floors, a mezzanine and an attic, totalling usable space of around 1600 square metres. It

previously operated as a hotel and as such, has some working facilities but it has been in a state of abandonment since 2013. Buyers were not ready to share details about the project, nor would they indicate a start date for renovation works to begin but news is expected in the coming weeks. Local residents are expected to welcome the news as the building, and surrounding parking area, is in a state of disrepair and any renovation of the iconic hotel will be an improvement. The company behind the purchase of the building, ESI Spain, is involved in the sale and distribution of computer products although it has diversified in recent years with a number of hotel projects in Europe. It has offices in France, Germany, Luxembourg and Belgium and employs 170 people.

BITE SIZE Woman arrested for NEWS: abandoning her

A woman and her two daughters were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire at their home in Torrevieja. The fire broke out just after 8pm at an address on Calle Barcelona on Thursday. The 24 year old woman and her two daughters, aged 4 and 18 months, were brought to Torrevieja hospital for treatment after the incident.

Police protection Torrevieja has distributed 140 bulletproof vests among its police force, it was announced this week. Officers have been waiting for almost four years for the protective clothing, the contracting file having first been opened in 2016. The contract for the supply of the vests was awarded in September 2019 but delivery of the items did not take place until last week when officers at Torrevieja local police HQ finally took possession of the vests. Police unions have long been demanding this essential piece of kit – up until now, police officers had to share thirty bullet proof vests between them. These vests were acquired by the police force in early 2015 after the jihadist attacks in Paris. The vests cost €109,000 including IVA.

Brutal assault in La Siesta An elderly man was brutally assaulted in La Siesta in what neighbours described as an unprovoked attack. baby in Orihuela The National Police have arrested a 35year-old woman in Orihuela as she is alleged to be the mother of the newborn baby girl abandoned the week before last in the city. It is believed that the woman already has four daughters, and had hidden her pregnancy and gave birth in the bathroom of her home alone. Given her economic situation and having ignored the necessary procedures to give the baby up for adoption, it is claimed that the woman decided to abandon her daughter on 17th January, leaving her in a doorway for someone to find her. Luckily, according to reports made by the Provincial Police of Alicante the abandoned child is in perfect health and has suffered no lasting medical side affects from her ordeal. The events happened nearly a fortnight ago, when a local man returned from walking his dog to find the infant in the doorway to his home. The newborn girl was wrapped in several layers of clothes and placed inside a plastic bag, and seemed to be in good health. From that moment, the investigation to locate the mother began. Specialist

Officers from UFAM (Family and Women Care Unit) of the Judicial Police Brigade at Orihuela Police Station, conducted the first investigations in order to find the mother of the child. By studying the security cameras in the area, the officers were able to get an image of the person who could have left the baby, the location in which she could live was determined and throughout the following week officers scoured the neighbourhood, "almost home by home", until they found the person suspected of abandoning the baby. The mother was transferred by the officers to a medical centre, as she had not received any medical help or treatment before, during or after childbirth. Fortunately, she was also found to be in good health. The woman has been placed at the disposal of the Orihuela Court s and will face prosecution for the crime of abandonment of a minor.

Guardia Civil recover stolen church crosses A pair of pectoral crosses, stolen from the church in Torrevieja earlier this month, have been recovered by the Guardia Civil. One of the crosses was found smashed to pieces and restoration work will be necessary to restore it to its former state. Investigating officers also recovered a laptop belonging to the parish but still missing is a collection tin from the Purísima museum in the church. One arrested was made by investigators

and parish priest Manuel Martínez praised officers for their hard work in recovering the stolen items. It is believed that CCTV images were key to identifying the perpetrator. The recovery of the crosses, important features in Torrevieja’s patronal fiestas, was bittersweet due to the damage inflicted on the items. The parish is engaging the services of an expert to assess the damage and to find out the cost of repairs.

Brexit Friday When the clock strikes midnight in Brussels on Friday, Britain’s 47 years in the European club of nations will be over. At first nothing will change, as the UK enters an 11-month transition period that preserves the status quo. But there is one crucial exception: the UK will fall out of all EU decision-making bodies – and the consequences will be immediate. On Friday evening, flags will be taken down, British access to EU diplomatic cables will be switched off, the UK will go beige on EU maps – the neutral colour of a foreign country. Everyone knew this day was coming, but it will still be a big moment. “It will be very sad,” Margrethe Vestager, Europe’s competition commissioner, said. “I think it will bring back the feeling of the day of the referendum. The sorrow, it was tangible, it was almost something you could hold.” At the end of the week, three EU presidents will mark this fracture in EU history: Ursula von der Leyen, head of the European commission, Charles Michel, chair of EU leader summits, and David Sassoli, European parliament

president, are expected to issue a joint statement. On the eve of Brexit day, the three leaders will gather in northern France for a “retreat” on the future of Europe at the house of Jean Monnet, the French statesman whose vision for peace through political integration helped create the European Coal and Steel Community, the precursor of the modern EU. Neither the timing, nor the venue seem accidental. Details are still being worked out, reflecting the sensitivity of the moment. No entire country has ever left the EU before, so there is no protocol on how it works. While Westminster will see a countdown clock projected on the walls of No 10, government buildings lit up and union jacks flying in Parliament Square, Brussels will be sombre. British flags in the EU institutions

will be taken down by maintenance workers, out of office hours, with no cameras to record the moment. One of the European parliament’s flags will be sent to the House of History, the EU-funded museum in Brussels. At the EU council of ministers, the nerve-centre of EU law-making, the union jacks will be taken down and put in a cupboard, along with those of other non-EU states, “third countries” as the EU refers to the rest of the world. From midnight, British diplomats will be locked out of Brussels internal databases, denied access to the diplomatic cables from 139 EU delegations around the world, draft legislation and internal memos that are the heartbeat of European decisionmaking. The switch-off only affects EU internal communications, as the UK will continue to have access to EU crime-fighting databases under the terms of the transition period. EU diplomats have received warnings to check that no British official is accidentally left on a classified mailing list. As for details of trade deals or how Brexit will truly affect those of us living here in Spain, only time will tell and all we can do is wait and see...

A Chinese tourist has been put into an isolation room in the PTS Central hospital in Granada in what could be Spain’s first case of Coronavirus. At time of writing, tests were underway with samples being sent for analysis at the National Microbiology Centre of Majadahonda (Madrid) where a diagnosis will be made. Until then the man will remain in quarantine. The man travelled from the virus’ epicentre of Wuhan, with 17 fellow tourists on an official tour of Spain. He was part of a bus tour, travelling around Spain and visited Granada on the latest leg of their journey. The tour group was believed to be taking in other towns including Sevilla, Málaga and Ronda. The man was taken to the PTS Central hospital where, once doctors had

established his place of origin, he was subjected to the government’s protocols of immediate quarantine until a diagnosis could be established. The other 16 members of the tour have been taken to their hotel and asked not to leave until it is safe to do so, along with their bus driver. None of the other members of the tour have shown any signs of the virus and were all wearing face masks during the tour, according to the Junta de Andalucía report. Previously, the Spanish Health Ministry had announced that two people in the country were under observation for symptoms of coronavirus. Both of them had recently arrived in Spain from the centre of the current outbreak, the Chinese city of Wuhan. But later the same afternoon (Friday 24th Janaury) there was

confirmation that tests on both the people had come back negative. Fernando Simón, director of the Health

The Spanish government is not currently planning on taking any special measures at the country’s airports, given

Ministry’s Centre for the Coordination of Health Emergencies, said that the Spanish health authorities have “low, but active, concerns” about the arrival of the virus in the country. The official went on to explain that a protocol is being prepared to deal with the pathogen. “The population should have a very low risk perception,” he told reporters. “If you are coming from Wuhan and you have symptoms, you should calmly head to your doctor. But we are in flu season: any symptoms, even if you have travelled from the area, are likely to be flu,” he said.

that there are no direct flights from Wuhan to Spain, and what’s more, in Simón’s words, this kind of measure “has not proven to be effective.” For now, only countries that have a direct air connection with the Chinese city are implementing such protocols. The coronavirus has already caused over 80 deaths and sickened nearly 2,000 people in China (at time of writing), and more infections have been discovered in just over a dozen countries among people who recently travelled to the city, where a travel lock-down is in effect.

Torrevieja veteran awarded French medal of honour The Royal Naval Association (RNA) Torrevieja Branch reflect on the accolade of Chevalier de la Legion D’Honneur conferred on WWII veteran in 2019. It is with immense pride that the RNA Torrevieja branch has amidst its members Joseph Billet, affectionately known locally as “Joe The Cat Man” and a previous Standard Bearer for the RNA Torrevieja Branch for over seven years, who was accompanied by his partner Rose Lyon and his son Jimmy at a ceremony where he was presented with the Medal and award by Colonel Xavier Toutain, the French Military Attaché to Madrid, at The French School of Alicante situated in El Campello. Although the Legion D’Honneur awards are ostensibly for French nationals, other non-French national are recognised for their exceptional contribution to benefiting society and each new cohort tells the richness and diversity of meritorious life paths and depicts the multifaceted contours of French society both civilian and military. Joe’s award was for the Normandy Landing in June 1944 and he is now a privileged Legion D’Honneur recipient who represent a community of men and women, a reflection of French society and a model for future generations. Joe’s voyage to this award ceremony started in 2014 and has been arduous and needed persistent fortitude from Joe and Rose, which he has demonstrated throughout his life, when the French government announced that they were to award Normandy veterans the ‘Chevalier de Legion D’Honneur’. In August 2016 Joe received an acknowledgment from the British MOD that his previously submitted application form had been approved by the French Government and that he should receive notification from them in about six weeks. Substantiating any further progress from the British MOD during thesucceeding years through numerous phone calls, messages and letters was unfruitful until after lunch at the June 2019 D-Day 75 ceremony on Southsea Common where the French President, Emmanuel Macron, gave a 20 minute personal address to a group of WWII veterans which included Joe and Rose. In Rose’s words Joe seized this opportunity: “Joe said to me, now’s our chance to speak to Macron and tell him I haven’t received my medal. Joe then pushed me to the front of the queue and I explained to President Macron that Joe had been told he was to receive the award but so far this hadn’t happened. President Macron looked really concerned and said that they took these things very seriously. He called over his Aides and introduced us to the French Military Attaché to London who gave me his business card and I gave him Joe’s details”. Subsequently on arriving home after the trip, they received an email from the French authorities telling them that they would be contacted by Colonel Xavier Toutain the French Military Attaché to Madrid andafter several successive emails a ceremony was arranged for Joe to be presented with his award. At the ceremony Colonel Xavier Toutain the French Military Attaché to Madrid made a speech where he welcomed Joe, his partner Rose, and his son Jimmy and went on to thank various other people for joining them, including individuals in the Spanish and French authorities for enabling and facilitating such a special event. He also made reference to Joe’s military service with the reason for the award and

the following is an extract from his speech: “As French Defense attaché in Spain, I had the privilege to be present at Colleville the last 6th of June, to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the first Normandy landings, with the French and the United States Presidents. For me, it is a very special place. I don't say that only because I have Normand origins from my father ("Toutain" is indeed a Norman name), or because my wife's family has a house located at the very Omaha Beach, where I'm used to spending some holidays. I think that from these beautiful beaches of Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword, with their unique sand color, and from these impressive memorials spread all along the coast and fields of Normandy, irradiate a very special spirit, like if we were in harmony with all the young soldiers that gave their lives for our liberty. The United Kingdom's soldiers, close to the American, Canadian, French and many other ones sacrificed themselves for our values to survive, so that we could build together a better world. On one of these five beaches, Gold Beach to be precise, the morning of this 6th of June 1944, soldiers disembarked from many different kinds of vessels and boats. On one of them, had been sailing from England the young Joseph Billet, a 17 years old assistant steward. And I'm going to recount you a part of his incredible story. Joseph joined the Merchant Navy as a boy of 15 in 1942 as a trainee steward. He worked aboard various merchant vessels on Atlantic and Mediterranean convoys, and also went to the Middle East to load aviation fuel, and to Far East with supplies for troops in Burma. In March 1943 Joseph was working aboard the SS Fort a la Corne, taking war material to North Africa for the 8th Army, mainly ammunition. The ship was leaving empty when a U-boat's torpedo sank it, on the 30th of March 1943. Fortunately, all on board were saved except Joseph's cat, Skipper. I know that many years later, in 1984, Joseph wrote to the commander of the German submarine and they started up a correspondence. In 1944, Joseph joined the SS Fort Poplar in Newport, South Wales, as assistant steward, and sailed up to Loch Ewe in Scotland, where the ship was transformed in order to carry troops. Then, it was on a bank of the Thames Estuary where the ship's name was changed for a code number and where troops boarded, ready for the Normandy Landings. On the 5th of June 1944, Joseph and his ship joined the invasion fleet and sailed towards Normandy, where the troops landed, on Gold beach, early on the 6th of June. Then, they went to SaintMalo where there was a terrible shelling from the ships, especially the HMS Rodney. Joseph later joined the SS Bunting ll carrying coal back up the river Seine to Rouen, Le Grand-Quevilly and Caen until March 1945. Leaving the Merchant Navy in 1946, he joined the Army, first in the artillery, then in the Parachute regiment before becoming a Malay Scout serving in the jungles of the British Malaysia until 1953. The Malay Scouts then became the 22 SAS — The Special Air Service. Joseph got married in 1953 and as his new wife didn't want him away for months or years at a time, he reluctantly left the SAS in 1953 although he did join the Territorial Army for four years until they were disbanded. He is still a member

of the SAS Regimental Association, which he joined in 1953. In his civilian life, Joseph worked in civil engineering as a supervisor on projects in many different countries until retiring to Spain in 1992 where he is a member of both The Royal Naval Association and The Royal Air Force Association, represented today. What an extraordinary destiny... l'm sure that Joseph could spend hours telling us much more. As his partner Rose told me, he has many tales to tell and

always makes them sound like "a boys own adventure". What I can tell you, is that Joseph has been many times recognized for his actions, and was already awarded the 1939-1945 Star, the Atlantic Star with France and Germany bar for Atlantic convoys, the North Africa Star with North Africa bar for Sicily and for Mediterranean convoys, Burma Star for taking petrol supplies to the 14th Army, Defence and Victory Medals, and Malaysian medal for fighting terrorists in the Malaysian jungles when Malaysia was still a British colony.

But the French Republic didn't forget him at all. On the 20th of October 2017, the French President awarded him the Legion of Honor. But because of a combination of factors that I cannot explain, I have today the fabulous honor to actually give him this exceptional award. Because, in France, the Legion of Honor is the first decoration in the formal order. It was established by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802 to unite the nation around a common ideal of public spirit and individual honor... So l'm very proud to be the young 45 year old (since yesterday) French colonel, who awards the Legion of honor to a 92 year old very fit United Kingdom veteran, whose whole life and multiple commitments for international liberty, especially during the Normandy Landing of June 1944, are the best examples for all of us.” Joe and Rose felt very privileged to have been invited to participate in the ‘Voyage of Remembrance’ in June 2019, which was organised by The Royal British Legion to take 300 Normandy Veterans aboard the MV Boudicca ( A Fred Olsen Line cruise ship) for the D-Day 75 commemorations in both Normandy and Southsea and an account of their adventure in Rose’s words can be found on the ‘News’ Tab at the RNA Torrevieja Branch website www.rnatorrevieja.com The Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch welcome military and nonmilitary personnel into our socially friendly and engaging organization, so give us a call: Chairman Paul Edwards on 618644934, Membership Secretary, Danny Kay on Tel 966716274 or email rosendanes@yahoo.co.uk or the Secretary Margaret Forshaw on Tel 966921996.

Minimum wage increased Are you a by €50 a month lottery winner The first prize of the National Lottery held on Thursday 23rd January, 2020 has fallen on the number 16,958. The holder of a tenth with this number is in luck, because it holds a prize of 300,000 euros per series. Several tenths of the first prize number were sold in different locations across the province of Alicante. Specifically, one in Calle Manuel Flores number 11, in Catral; another at Maximiliano García Soriano 42, in Elda; and also at the Gran Alacant Shopping Center in Santa Pola ....could it be you? The second prize of the draw falls on number 63,299, which comes with a 60,000 euros prize. And this prize has also made an appearance in the province with several tenths being sold from the lottery kiosk in Portalet Street No. 2 in Calpe. The National Lottery is a raffle that is based on the sale of printed tenths. A ticket consists of ten tenths with the same number and series. The series are the

different bills numbered from 00000 to the last one printed in each draw. Each of the ten tenths of a bill is identified by the fraction, so that a tenth always has a unique combination of number, series and fraction. The draws are made on Thursdays and Saturdays where five balls are drawn between 0 and 9 that correspond to the winning number. Success is rewarded at five, four, three, two and one figure digit. The National Thursday lottery is sold in tenths at a regular price of 3 euros. It usually has a first prize of € 30,000 and a special prize for the series and fraction of 1,470,000 euros. The National Saturday lottery is sold in tenths of a usual price of 6, 12, 15 or 20 euros. Its first prize ranges from 60,000 to 130,000 euros and a special prize to the series and fraction of up to 16,170,000 euros.

Spain’s government has increased the minimum wage in line with its pledged scale of rises back in 2018, which aims for it to reach the European Union requirement of 60 percent of the national average wage by the year 2022. The minimum gross pay a person working a full-time, 40-hour week can earn is now €950 per month in a 14month year, up from €900 in 2019. Traditionally, employees in Spain would receive a double pay packet in August and again at Christmas, and the minimum wage is always calculated on this basis, even though fewer and fewer firms follow this practice nowadays. Over a 12-month year, the gross minimum wage sat at €1,050 a month until this week, and will now rise to €1,108.33. As a result, the average worker on the minimum wage in a fulltime job will have seen his or her monthly take-home pay, based upon 12 pay packets a year, rise from €964.50 to €996.80. When the left-wing socialist government came into power in June 2018, the minimum wage was €735.90 a month over a 14-month year, or 12 monthly take-home pays of approximately €791.70. During the right-wing PP government's reign from November 2011 to June 2018, the minimum wage only rose by a total of €94.50 in six-anda-half years, or 14 percent. It went up in 2013 by just €3.90 a month before tax, then two years later, by €3.30 a month, having been frozen in

2014. Another €6.60 monthly increase was agreed in 2016, taking the minimum wage to €655.20 in 14 payments, or approximately 12 takehome pays of €700. In the three years before the PP's reign, it had barely gone up, being above €600 but below €640 as a gross figure paid in 14 instalments. The newly-announced increase means that in the past two years, the minimum gross monthly wage for a fulltime, 40-hour-a-week job will have gone up by 29 percent, or by €214. President Pedro Sánchez's coalition partners Podemos want to see it rise to a minimum of €1,000 in 14 payments, which will give 12 monthly take-home salaries of approximately €1,030. This is expected to be the case by the beginning of 2021. Eventually, and sooner rather than

later, Podemos wants a minimum income for everyone of €1,200 a month after tax. In 2018, the average wage in Spain was €1,889 a month before tax, or a take-home pay of €1,524.20, although 30 percent of employees earned less than €1,230 before tax, or €1,064.10 net. By 2019, the average gross monthly pay had risen to €1,970.54, or a take-home of €1,582.40. But the most frequent, or modal average, was €1,456.83 before tax, or €1,216.70 net. This means with the new minimum wage rise, the EU's criteria of minimum pay being at least 60% of a country's average pay is met – based upon 2019 figures, this 60 percent would be €949.44 after tax, which is in fact €47.36 less than the lowest earners are now entitled to receive.

Grand day out at U3A Thursday 23rd January, saw a coach load of Torrevieja University of the Third Age (U3A) members taking a ride to Cartagena for a day of sightseeing, shopping, and for some, enjoying a slapup Menu del Dia. Thankfully the weather had improved considerably from the previous few days and the journey was made through a dry sunny clime without

any hold-ups. A good day was had by all but it was not long enough for the sightseers to take in more than a few of the attractions. “We will probably have to make another visit on another date in the futureto try and visit the rest. It was a most enjoyable and interesting day out,” said the group.

Easy Horse Care hit hard The Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre is experiencing the toughest time it has ever been under in the 11 years it has been up and running. The financial situation is crippling the Foundation, to the point that it has had to let some of the workers go as the Centre just cannot find the resources to pay their wages and all the associated tax and insurance costs. Founder Sue said: “Having to lose two full time workers is now putting my husband Rod, who is 70 years old, myself, at 64 years old, and the few volunteers we have left, under incredible stress. Just doing all the usual daily chores as well as attempting to keep on top of the maintenance issues associated with

caring of 120 equines is taking its toll and that is without all the other necessities that come with running the Foundation.” The financial situation, which is always tight for the charity as it receives no, has been exacerbated this year following the devastating after effects of last September’s ‘DANA’ and now Storm Gloria. The local forage, used to help feed the horses, ponies and donkey’s has been destroyed across the Vega Baja region and so now has to come from further afield. Sue explained: “We have been able to source the forage from places such as Albacete but at twice the price. A large

bale of alfalfa previously cost €50 and we are now paying a staggering €100 each and we get through two of those every day. Our current bill for forage is €20,000.” The Centre not only homes abused, abandoned and rescued animals but also works closely with the Police against animal cruelty. Time and time again the local Police forces have said that if EHCRC could not take these abused and abandoned equines then they would not be able to prosecute irresponsible or cruel owners. The Centre and the local police forces are dedicated to reducing animal neglect and improving animal welfare. However, this means that the Centre cannot easily reduce the number of equines it has because when there is police involvement, the majority of the animals must remain at the Centre as they are part of the judicial process. These animals are essentially wards of the court and cannot be re-homed or given for adoption. Those few equines that fall outside of these terms and could, in theory be adopted, aren’t suitable for rehoming because they are not suitable for riding and come with long term and often costly health care needs which most people are unwilling to take on. To add insult to injury EHCRC have now been informed that strict measures need to be put in place in all of its Charity Shops. These need to function like any other shop or business – a rule that applies to all Charity Shops in the region not just EHCRC and is bound to have negative effects on them all. Sue said: “The Government has

decided that Charity Shops should be treated like any other business and will therefore now be subject to pay 21 percent on all their takings. This is a huge blow for all genuine Charities. EHCRC are reeling from this incredible decision on the part of the Government as the Charity Shops are a lifeline, raising much needed funds for the animals from the very kind donations and purchases of our supporters.” Urgent help needed EHCRC has been in contact with all the various local authorities who placed equines in its care to highlight the huge burden these recent events are having on the Centre. Sue concluded: “Given our on-going relationship with the town, Aas always

Rojales Council is leading the way and looking for ways to help the Foundation, not only get through this current financial crisis but to look at long term measures to help with the ongoing animal welfare battle. Sadly the support from the other Councils to date has been non-existent. “More than ever we now need the public’s help and support to not only look after those most at risk equines but to continue with the fight to change the future of animal welfare in Spain. As always we thank you for your support and kindness and ask you to please contribute in whatever way you can – donating, volunteering, sharing...the options are endless just check out our website for all details www.easyhorsecare.net As always we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Torrevieja carnival showcased for the world The biggest international tourism fair (see page 23 for more) was filled with music and colour thanks to Torrevieja’s carnival showcase. The Torrevieja carnival troupes brought the spirit of mardi gras to Madrid as over a hundred young dancers paraded through the FITUR pavilion, presenting the event to the thousands of spectators gathered. Those present were delighted to witness the spectacular costumes, bursting with colour and energy, as well as the irresistibly hypnotic carnival music. The groups representing Torrevieja’s Carnival at FITUR were the winners of last year’s Carnival competition and were joined by members of the town hall delegation who were on hand with leaflets listing the

programme of events surrounding the famous February parade, including the National Drag Queen Contest. FITUR is one of the world’s most important tourism fairs and it is hoped this splash of colour will attract even more visitors to Torrevieja. In fact, organisers are hoping the carnival itself becomes listed as an official event of Regional Tourist Interest, which would mean that the event in 2021 will be the biggest and best yet. In the meantime, 2020’s carnival has a lot to offer including a children’s parade involving most of the local schools. A full programme of events is available from the tourist office or online at https://torrevieja.com/carnavaltorrevieja-2020/.

Detergent spill cause white foam in Segura The analyses commissioned by the City Council of Orihuela to discover the source of the white foam that appeared last Wednesday floating in the channel has detected the presence of detergents in the water. These would be discharges from sewage treatment plants upstream of Orihuela, in the Region of Murcia. These factories do not have a rainwater tanks and so the water pours without any control into the river. The Councillor for the Environment explained that the consequences of these pollutions have been made much worse by the heavy rains experienced recently. The heavy rains from Storm Gloria dragged down the substances that caused the presence of foam in the city of Murcia and that by Wednesday had reached the Vega Baja, after rains increased the flow tenfold. The analyses conclude that the foam originated from a spill of anionic detergents that exceeded the limit set in terms of acceptable water quality in the River Segura, which feeds the Vega Baja. The Segura Hydrographic Confederation (CHS) has opened an investigation with the analysis

of the upstream samples, although in this case the results will not be known for several days. If the limits have been exceeded, the CHS will open a sanction file, the agency said. Following this latest contamination, the City Council of Orihuela has demanded that the CHS takes greater control of this type of discharges into the Segura which come upstream from Murcia, which is outside of the control of Orihuela and whose huge plants blatantly do not meet the required standards or follow the correct processes and procedures. The Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, explained that Orihuela has three rainwater tanks and a sewage treatment plant all that "that work correctly", and wanted to make an appeal "to the municipalities that do not comply with the legislation to avoid any contamination in the

river, calling on the CHS to apply sanctions in those cases to those who do not respect the regulations”. The CHS has now opened two disciplinary proceedings for discharges of untreated water into Segura from the sewage treatment plants in Murcia's Alcantarilla and Las Torres de Cotillas municipalities. The Councillor for Infrastructure, Ángel Noguera, for his part, called for citizen collaboration because “the discharges that are made into the ditches and channels seep into the river and in this case what is detected are detergents for domestic and non-industrial use, so people have to be made aware to take care of the environment”.

Albatera revamp Albatera has tendered a number of projects to improve two of its most important public facilities: the Huerta Park and the Supply Market. In La Huerta, it is planned to improve accessibility with a new pavement and stalls and to better the sound with acoustic improvements to the auditorium stage through absorbent sound panels. This will be the first improvement works made to the facility since it opened to the public 20 years ago. The investment to be made is valued at 119,000 euros, although this will probably reduce with downward offers from bidding companies. In the Supply Market, waterproofing works will be carried out on part of the roof and the pavements will be improved, in an contract valued at 219,000 euros. This commercial space was launched as a public service facility in 1956 for the sale of general food products. In 1989 a series of renovation works were carried out. These works focused mainly on the roof to the building and in 2014 air conditioning was installed. The new project aims to improve the sanitary, hygienic and functional conditions in the food market and to give a modern look to the space as a whole.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP After a poor end to last week, the pound responded with a dominant performance this week, gaining an average of 0.8% against the other major currencies. Indeed, it was only the Japanese yen that it lost out to (dropping 0.2%). Such a performance has helped the pound climb to the top of the heap over the last month, having gained an average of 1.6% since Christmas Eve. This came as a result of positive economic data, which even managed to push political events in Davos and a tariff spat between the UK and US aside in the minds of investors. With the exception of last Friday’s poor economic data, figures were positive across the board for sterling. Employment reached a record high for the country, earnings growth for basic wages held up at 3.4% and unemployment remained low at 3.8%. In addition, Rightmove’s index of asking prices climbed 2.3% higher this month, while the CBI’s Industrial Trends Survey showed the largest swing in optimism since 1958. In the build-up to next week’s rate cut decision by the Bank of England, this positive data went as far as to reduce the likelihood of a cut from 70% to 50% in the eyes of investors.

EUR The euro endured a tough week, winding up in last place amongst the big four currencies (GBP, EUR, USD and JPY), losing a cent and a third to sterling and giving up seven eights of a US cent. This was attributed more to an absence of positive developments than a poor collection of data, however. An increase in inflation saw it return to 1.3%, as expected, while construction output enjoyed a 0.7% boost in November. Even positive ZEW’s surveys of economic sentiment were not enough to encourage investors over the course of the week. Thursday saw the euro suffer a further blow, with the European Central Bank (ECB) President Christine Lagarde announcing no change to monetary policy. Lagarde also launched the first strategic review of ECB policy in 16 years. While all of this had been anticipated by investors, there was emphasis placed on the seemingly dovish tone of Lagarde’s pronouncements, leading to a continued lack of optimism in the euro and a markdown of the currency.

Picturesque Italian town is selling houses for just €1 An idyllic town in a beautiful region of Italy is selling houses for just €1. Located in the south of Campania, two hours from Naples, picturesque Bisaccia is appealing to buyers to snap up the bargain properties in a bid to revive their dwindling community. After a spate of earthquakes, the town's population has been in steady decline, with many of the buildings in a crumbling and run down state. But now, over 90 of the buildings have been put on the market for one euro approximately 1 euro encouraging families or groups of friends to buy multiple properties. After previous residents fled the rural area, the empty houses are now in the

care of the local authority, meaning there will be no difficult dealings with original owners. The only catch is that buyers are expected to commit to renovating the properties although there is no set time frame for this to be completed. Deputy mayor Francesco Tartaglia explains how many of the properties are "clustered" together - lined up together and often sharing a single entrance, making it ideal for a family or group of friend to move together instead of single buyers. She said:"We welcome families, groups of friends, relatives, people who know each other or investors to join forces. We encourage them to buy more than just one house to actually have an impact and breathe new

life." It's not the first area in recent months to appeal for new residents to boost dwindling population numbers. The president the under-populated region of Molise was offering newcomers thousands of pounds a year to live there after it was revealed there was not a single new birth registered there in 2018. Newcomers were welcomed to villages a population of less than 2,000 and be in a position to open a new business. In early 2019, the town of Mussomeli in southern Sicily put its abandoned properties on the market for a symbolic price of €1 to anyone willing to move in, on the condition the buyer would renovate within a year.

Paté recalled in Listeria scare Spanish towns of 50,000 must have lowemissions zone The Spanish consumer organisation OCU has issued an information alert, echoing a similar alert by the Spanish Agency for Food Safety and Nutrition (AESAN) for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in some duck products marketed under the food label Zubía. Products such as duck pate, manufactured by Patés Zubía SL, were shown to have listeria present in four batches. The bacteria was found during the company’s own self controls which activated its crisis protocol, notifying the food safety authority and

issuing product recall. The batches being recalled are as follows: — MEDALLÓN BLOC DE PATO 30% TROZOS 70 g. Batch numbers 985, 988, 1009 y 1012. — MEDALLÓN FOIE GRAS DE PATO MI CUIT 75 g. Batch numbers 986 y 1001. — MEDALLÓN BLOC DE FOIE GRAS DE PATO 70 g. Batch numbers 987, 1002, 1008 y 1013. — MEDALLÓN BLOC DE FOIE GRAS PATO PASAS 75 gr. Batch numbers 999, 1003 y 1010.

— MEDALLÓN FOIE DE CANARD 70 g. Batch numbers 1000, 1004, 1007 y 1011. — MEDALLÓN DE FOIE GRAS DE PATO MI CUIT 50 g. Batch numbers 353 y 354. The products were “manufactured in Spain and distributed to: Andalusia, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y León, Catalonia, Madrid, Valencian Community and the Basque Country.” If you have bought one of the recalled products, refrain from consuming it and return it to the place of purchase.

All towns and cities in Spain with a population of at least 50,000 inhabitants will soon be required by law to implement their own 'Madrid Central' in a bid to cut air pollution and slow down climate change. President Pedro Sánchez had already proposed this in his July presidential investiture speech – when he failed to be voted in due to not securing enough support from the opposition for his minority government – but now he is officially in power thanks to a coalition deal with fellow leftists Podemos, the 'proposal' is set to become an 'obligation'. 'Madrid Central' was set up by the capital's former Mayor, Manuela Carmena, from Ahora Madrid, a branch of Podemos, and effectively bans traffic from the middle 'almond' of the city. Emissions-free vehicles are allowed in, as well as those heading directly for a parking space, plus residents, public transport, and loading and unloading vehicles during certain times of day. 'Madrid Central' has proven an excellent tool for keeping the air cleaner in the metropolitan area, and also for reducing some of the country's worst traffic jams. Now governed by the right-wing PP, the city's vehicle-free zone looked set to be under threat at first, but public pressure means it has not been axed – so far. Sánchez's environment and energy transition minister and one of his four

deputy presidents, Teresa Ribera, says the government has now opted not to enforce the planned diesel car ban by the year 2040, but instead is focusing on the European Union's requirement for member States to be carbon-neutral by the year 2050. This means not producing any more carbon dioxide (CO2) than can be absorbed, and includes, as well as trying to cut emissions, planting more trees to swallow up CO2 and generate more oxygen. Also, Spain wants to reduce its CO2 emissions by one tonne for every three by the year 2030, and for all cars on the road by the year 2050 to be emissionsfree. Sra Ribera says no new financial benefits will be given to any producers of fossil fuel, in line with the G20 Summit's objectives in 2009, 'except where this is justifiable on social grounds'. Minister for the treasury and government spokeswoman María Teresa Montero says her department has been working with others, including that of Ribera, for months, on creating financial incentives for companies which reduce their emissions and tax penalties for those which generate higher levels of pollution – the latter method being, according to Montero, a 'deterrent' rather than a 'source of income'.

Pest plan across Orihuela The Councillor for the Environment, Dámaso Aparicio, has awarded the contract for the comprehensive, preventive, control and extermination of mosquitoes and midges across the municipality of Orihuela. The contract is worth 297,000.00 euros and the tender has been won by the company CTL Environmental Health for a total bid of 215,325 euros (VAT included), which gives a saving of 101,250 euros. The scope of action will include those areas that potentially lend themselves to the intense breeding of these types of pests and the company has been briefed to tackle as many different types of flies, midges and mosquitoes as possible. The Councillor explained that the company will firstly address “those places in the municipality with recurrent stagnant water, especially in the channel and banks of the Segura river, flood plains on the coast and pools and ponds in the districts”. These breeding grounds, alongside those areas that constitute a refuge for the adult mosquito and that affect urban centres where people are particularly affected by bites and irritation, will be main focus areas. The Department of Environment is placing an emphasis on prevention so that the company will act every fifteen days between the months of April and September, as well as on other adhoc occasions where it is

necessary to extinguish these pests as they manifest throughout the year. In terms of specifically targeting midges, the focus will be on the Segura River channel as it passes through the town centre of Orihuela and in all the wetlands of the municipality, including the coast and parishes, at least once a month between April and September as well as when necessary throughout the year. These services aim to reduce, to acceptable levels, the presence of those pests that cyclically make their appearance in Orihuela, districts and Orihuela Costa. The local government team understands how these pests can affect the quality of life for local residents or could even put them at medical risk given the danger of transmitted diseases such as malaria and zika virus. Therefore, control and extermination is key. The councillor also called for “a greater collaboration from the Generalitat Valenciana to also

carry out this type of action", noting that pest control across the wider region is laeft to the local councils and that the regional government dose little to address these issues. To ensure a comprehensive service an Annual Action Plan will be provided by the company, describing the services to be carried out together with an summary of the actual work carried out with a maximum attention to reducing the affects of these pests. Finally, the Councillor for the Environment clarified that “the dates for the treatments are only an indication, and the winning bidder will have the obligation to monitor and expand the calendars, at no cost to the City Council. These must be carried out whenever necessary, whether requested by the council, by the specialists of the company itself or dues to concerns raised by local residents”.

AQABA is the only coastal city in Jordan and the largest and most populous city on the Gulf of Aqaba. Situated in southernmost Jordan, Aqaba is the administrative centre of the Aqaba Governorate. The city had a population of 148398 in 2015 and a land area of 375 square kilometres (144.8 sq mi). Today, Aqaba plays a major role in the development of the Jordanian economy, through the vibrant trade and tourism sectors. The Port of Aqaba also serves other countries in the region.

Aqaba

Aqaba's strategic location at the northeastern tip of the Red Sea between the continents of Asia and Africa, has made its port important over the course of thousands of years. The ancient city was called Ayla, its strategic location and proximity to copper mines, made it a regional hub for copper production and trade in the Chalcolithic period. Ayla became a bishopric under Byzantine rule and later became a Latin Catholic titular see after Islamic conquest around 600 AD, when Ayla became known as Aqaba.

Aqaba's location next to Wadi Rum and Petra has placed it in Jordan's golden triangle of tourism, which strengthened the city's location on the world map and made it one of the major tourist attractions in Jordan Geography The city lies at Jordan's southernmost point, on the Gulf of Aqaba lying at the tip of the Red Sea. Its strategic location is shown in the fact that it is located at the crossroads of the three continents of Asia, Europe and Africa, while bordering Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia.

Tourism Aqaba has a number of luxury hotels, including in the Tala Bay resort 20 km further to the south, which service those who come for fun on the beaches as well as Scuba diving. It also offers activities which take advantage of its desert location. Its many coffee shops offer mansaf and knafeh, and baqlawa desserts. Another very popular venue is the Turkish Bath (Hamam) built in 306 AD, in which locals and visitors alike come to relax after a hot day.

He won't tell me what went wrong My husband of 8 years gave me the shock of my life saying he wanted a trial separation. Things haven’t been exactly right with us for months. His mood changed and he suddenly went all quiet on me. I was constantly asking what was wrong, and he said he thought it was a mid-life thing but didn’t offer me any more of an explanation. He started refusing to come to family gatherings (my family), saying he was overworked and tired, but he was willing enough to see his own family and go without me. Last week I looked at his phone and he has put a password on it, something he’s never done before, so I suspect there is someone else. I had a meltdown and am quite embarrassed to say that I pleaded with him not to go. A removal van came to take his things away. It’s eating away at me. But he won’t tell the truth and I am left hanging as to what has changed. Right now there are so many unanswered questions. I’ve calmed down a little now, and am having to accept it. I think the trial separation thing is just an excuse to get his foot out of the door, and he has no intention of working on our relationship. You deserve an explanation after eight years of marriage. I think you have come to terms with the fact that he is making no moves to mend your relationship, rather he is putting permanent plans in place to fully leave if he is taking all his stuff and has severed ties with your family. Rather than broaching the subject with him when you are upset, tell him that you have accepted your relationship is over, and that if he wants out then you will not stand in his way, but that you need to know what changed so that you can both deal with it and move on. Then he might be willing to sit down and talk properly. You may get upset when you learn the truth but not knowing is torturing you right now. If he still won’t be honest, you could get a private investigator to look into things. WRITE TO SARA IN CONFIDENCE. A PSEUDONYM WILL BE USED IF YOU WISH. World’s biggest tourism fair What is probably one of the world's biggest tourism trade fairs, FITUR celebrated its 40th anniversary this year and has seen around 142,000 travel professionals take part, with the annual boost to Madrid's economy coming in at around €320 million. This year's FITUR, which took place at the IFEMA trade fair centre and ended on Sunday (26th January), has seen an increase of 3.8 percent in its exhibition stands, with 918 in total covering 165 countries and regions and 11,040 companies, distributed throughout 10 pavilions. It is the one tourism fair of the year that practically no Spanish town, province or region wants to miss – along with the World Travel Market (WTM) in London – as it always proves an investment rather than an expense and is the launch-pad for major deals with tour operators and other firms that help boost the holiday industry all over the country. Spain's coastal regions are never absent, even those which, it would seem, do not

exactly need to advertise – but this is partly because most of them use FITUR as a chance to promote other activities and attractions that do not form part of the standard 'sun, sea and sand' offer. Both countryside and heritage attractions, shopping and dining are on the menu on the Costa del Sol, Costa Blanca and other coasts in between. For all these areas, advertising what else they have besides great weather and beaches is key to turning tourism into a yearround industry, not just an activity that most traders only have the summer to make their living from. Overseas destinations, as well as the typical worldwide tourism Meccas, are always on display, and many of them change every year – for 2020, Niger, El Salvador, Papua New Guinea and Ras al-Khaimah are not present, but their stands have been occupied instead by Gabon, Surinam, Tajikistan and Taiwan. Asia-Pacific and Africa are the fastest-growing world regions in FITUR – the former by 21.5

percent and the latter by 19.5 percent - ahead of Europe, at 5.3 percent and the Americas, by 3.3 percent. Secretary of State for tourism Isabel Oliver says in FITUR's 40year history, Spain has become the second destination on earth for tourist numbers and also for tourist spending – from 38 million foreign visitors in 1981, the total in 2019 was 83 million, nearly double the country's population of 47.1 million, and annual holidaymakers spend a collective €92 billion in Spain. Different areas within FITUR this year include FITUR Match, FITUR Mice, the FITURNext Observatory, FITUR Talent, FITURtechy, FITUR Know-How & Export, FITUR Gay, FITUR Health, FITUR Screen and FITUR Festivals. Each year, a different country becomes a FITUR 'partner' – for 2020, this is South Korea, which welcomes 17.5 million visitors annually and, this year, is particularly relevant as it will be celebrating 70 years of the start of its diplomatic relations with Spain.

Blooming Peaches Following the popularity of last year’s trips to the beautiful peach blossom fields in Murica, the trip is being offered again this year as part of the ‘Discover the Real Spain’ series of trips and tours. Organised by local Spanish lady Begona Josa del Portillo, this tour is the perfect way to discover the wider region and a hidden gem. Begona has been hosting trips and tours for several years and has helped hundreds of people to enjoy a taste of the ‘real Spain’.

‘House of Peaches’ where they have used the same machines and methods of harvesting for more than 90 years. From there the group will head to the orchards for a stroll through the beautiful blooms and eat a picnic lunch showcasing some of the fabulous foods produced locally; including of

course breads accompanied by the delicious artisan jams and preserves made from the farm’s fresh peaches and apricots. There will also be the opportunity to taste peach wine and visitors are able to buy all of the home-made produce at the farm shop before they leave.

It probably doesn’t come as any surprise, that the majority of homeowners in the Costa Blanca are among the generation of “Boomers and Gen X’s.” However it’s time for the “Millennials” to follow suit, kick that rent in the butt, and get on the Spanish property ladder. Why should you quit renting, and start buying?

Your rent will continue to rise. It’s a fact that even with general inflation, your rent will never remain the same forever. Also, the more scarce rental properties become, landlords can and will increase their rates.

You’ll have more security and freedom. As a homeowner you’ll never have to ask permission to paint walls, or wait for approval on the most trivial things. Always wanted to adopt a furry friend? No problem… you own the home!

You’re building your wealth. Every monthly mortgage payment will be going towards your home, and not in a landlord’s pocket. Any renovations over time, will only increase the value of your home, not forgetting rising house prices. The equity you’re building, may be to save for your own children’s future, your retirement or assist you with moving to a bigger home.

You won’t always have a monthly payment. Once you’ve paid off your mortgage, there will be no more monthly payments to make. Even if it seems like a long time away, there is an end

Tributes for Terry Jones Monty Python star Terry Jones has died at the age of 77, following a battle with dementia. A statement from the family of Monty Python star Terry Jones said: "We are deeply saddened to have to announce the passing of beloved husband and father, Terry Jones. "Terry passed away on the evening of 21st January 2020 at the age of 77 with his wife Anna Soderstrom by his side after a long, extremely brave but always good humoured battle with a

rare form of dementia, FTD. "Over the past few days his wife, children, extended family and many close friends have been constantly with Terry as he gently slipped away at his home in North London. We have all lost a kind, funny, warm, creative and truly loving man whose uncompromising individuality, relentless intellect and extraordinary humour has given pleasure to countless millions across six decades. "His work with Monty Python, his

books, films, television programmes, poems and other work will live on forever, a fitting legacy to a true polymath. "We, his wife Anna, children Bill, Sally, Siri and extended family would like to thank Terry's wonderful medical professionals and carers for making the past few years not only bearable but often joyful. We hope that this disease will one day be eradicated entirely. We ask that our privacy be respected at this sensitive time and

give thanks that we lived in the presence of an extraordinarily talented, playful and happy man living a truly authentic life, in his words "Lovingly frosted with glucose." "Terence Graham Parry Jones, born 1st February 1942 died 21st January 2020." Sir Michael Palin said in a statement to the PA news agency: "Terry was one of my closest, most valued friends. He was kind, generous, supportive and passionate about living life to the full.

"He was far more than one of the funniest writer-performers of his generation, he was the complete Renaissance comedian - writer, director, presenter, historian, brilliant children's author, and the warmest, most wonderful company you could wish to have. "I feel very fortunate to have shared so much of my life with him and my heart goes out to Anna, Alison and all his family."

Chinese Year of the Rat The Lunar New Year is now upon us, which means it’s time for our annual dose of Chinese zodiac forecasts. In some ways, Chinese zodiacs are similar to astrological signs. Like star signs, there are 12 Chinese zodiacs: the Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig. Those with the same zodiacs are believed to have similar personalities and fates for the year. However, unlike star signs, Chinese zodiacs are determined by the year a person was born and not the month. Each zodiac is also associated with an element. For example, this year is the year of the Metal Rat, while in 2008, it was the Earth Rat. Zodiacs change every Chinese New Year, which this year fell on Saturday, 25th January. The year of the Metal Rat will be challenging for us all (what year isn’t?), but it also brings countless opportunities for personal and financial growth. For those who want to know if they’ll make it through the year without getting laid off, find out how to get ahead in their career, or see if new relationships will bloom in 2020, here are the forecasts for you. All 12 animal zodiacs are represented and it looks like everyone can look forward to something good. Of course, it’s all on you to make that happen. Below, are some insights for the year of the Metal Rat; read on and discover how to have an awesome 2020.

However, you have a tendency to be more forgetful than usual, so find a way to ensure you remember important information. Be mindful of your emotions, as you might get anxious and agitated easily.

Live on a remote Irish island for free Looking to move somewhere lesser-known? The remote Irish island of Great Blasket is on the hunt for a couple to move to its shores for seven months — and, best of all, both food and accommodation will be free. Before you pack up your bags, it's worth knowing that in order to live on the island you'll have to be able to run its small coffee shop and manage the island's accommodation. Great Blasket is a relatively under-the-radar spot, with just a handful of full-time residents left. Situated just a stone's throw from the coast of Count Kerry in Ireland, it is only accessible by boat from the surrounding islands. With its summer season set to kickstart this April, locals are looking for someone to relocate to the island until October. On Twitter, the job listing explains: 'A unique position required – looking for long term management of Island Accommodation and Coffee Shop. Couple or two friends. 1st April 2020 - October

2020 accommodation and food provided.' In the 20th century, the small fishing community had shrunk to around 20 inhabitants (it's thought the most it ever had was around 150). But, after the government stepped in to help, its crumbling numbers have thankfully been on the rise. With a famed fishing heritage, idyllic views and natural environment, it's the perfect place to head to if you're looking to spend your summer away

from the crowds, or want a fresh start somewhere completely new, even if it's only short-term. The job vacancy reads: a unique position required looking for long term management of Island Accommodation and Coffee Shop. Couple or two friends. 1st April 2020 - October 2020 accommodation and food provided. If you love the great outdoors, good coffee, soft beaches and the sound of the ocean crashing against the shore, you will most certainly love relocating here. Interested? If you want to apply for the position, contact Alice on info@greatblasketisland.net for more information.

BLACK BEAN CHOCOLATE CAKE No, it’s not a typo – cake made with beans. We haven’t lost the plot, it’s actually pretty delicious and arguably good for you to boot! We tried this recipe out on ‘unsuspecting’ friends and none guessed the secret ingredient!

of the chunks should fall into the batter but it helps to ‘encourage’ it in with a skewer or the handle of a teaspoon. This ensures some nice chocolatey chunks inside the cake too. 4. Bake the cake for approximately 35 min, and set aside to cool completely before removing it from the pan

Ingredients Makes 1 loaf tin sized cake: 240 g cooked black beans (or 1x 400 g can black beans, drained) 3 large eggs 100 g sugar 3 heaped Tbsp cocoa powder 50 g dark chocolate 70% 1 tsp instant coffee or 1 espresso shot 1/2 vanilla pod, scraped (or vanilla essence) 1 tsp baking powder Juice and zest from 1/2 orange A pinch of salt

Directions 1. Preheat the oven to 175°C 2. In a blender combine all of the ingredients, except the dark chocolate. Blend until it is smooth and free of any lumps. 3. Pour the batter into a parchment lined loaf pan. The batter will be very ‘liquidy’ but don’t panic, this is correct. Chop or bash the dark chocolate into small pieces and spread it across the surface, some

Keep the cake in the fridge, up to 5 days, and it will keep moist and delicious. TIP: Goes really well served slightly warm with a scoop of Mercadona’s ‘avena’ (oat) ice cream

How long does alcohol stay in your system? We’ve all been warned not to drink and drive. We’ve been taught that alcohol use and driving don’t mix well. But how long does alcohol stay in your system? Should you worry about driving, say, the morning after a night out with friends? For starters, we’ll give you a refresher on what happens to your body when you drink. You’ve probably heard that alcohol use depending on how much you drink—can harm your liver. But you may not have been warned about just how much stress you put on this vital blood-filtering organ after even just a few hours of partying. When you get alcohol in your blood, it passes through the liver, and the liver breaks it down. The main job of your liver is filtering blood that’s flowing from your digestive tract to the rest of your body. In the process of breaking down the alcohol you consume, your liver encounters toxins. Heavy drinking can make your liver fatty and cause scarring that can eventually restrict blood flow. This can cause liver cells to die and, consequently, halt liver function. So, how long does alcohol stay in your system? Individuals metabolise alcohol at different rates. In general, most people can

break down half a drink every hour. In terms of your blood alcohol content (BAC). If you’re at 0.08, if you don’t drink anymore, in two hours you’d probably be at about 0.05. So, that translates to your BAC lowering at about 0.015 an hour. (Your blood alcohol content is calculated as a percentage of the grams of alcohol you’ve consumed per every 100 millilitres of your blood.) A Breathalyzer measures your BAC by calculating how much alcohol is in the air you blow onto it. Again, keep in mind that people’s bodies react differently to alcohol. All the averages you hear when it comes to alcohol use are just that. What happens to your friend when she has four drinks might not be exactly what happens to you if you try to drink as quickly as her. Now that you know how long it takes a person (on average) to metabolise alcohol, you might wonder how long it takes for your

body to completely rid itself of the drug. Alcohol is detectable for up to 6 hours in blood; about 1224 hours in breath, urine, and saliva; and up to 90 days in hair. So just because you’ve endured the hangover doesn’t mean someone can’t tell that you partied over the weekend if they get a hold of a hair sample. For reference, a small glass of red wine has around 1.5 units of alcohol. (One unit of alcohol is eight grams or 10 millilitres of pure alcohol.) A pint of strong beer has around 3, and a small shot of tequila has about 1. You’ll be doing your body a favour if you keep count of how many units you’ve consumed while you’re hanging out at the bar. If you keep count, you’ll know when it’s time to slow down and stop.

Intuitive eating Intuitive eating means breaking free from the on-and-off cycle of dieting and learning to eat mindfully and without guilt. There’s no calorie counting or restrictions on certain foods, but there are some guidelines that make up the core philosophy of this method.

thing happens when you give yourself permission to eat chocolate doughnuts for breakfast. You stop and ask yourself, ‘Do I really want this now?’ Not just, ‘Will I enjoy it in the moment,’ but also ‘Will I feel good when I’m finished?’ And often, people realise they don’t really want that food; they just

present. Pause in the middle of your meal or snack to assess your current state: Are you still eating to feed your hunger, or are you eating out of distraction, boredom, or stress?

got caught up in society telling them they couldn’t have it.

Respect your body Intuitive eating is also about body acceptance: That means feeling good about your “genetic blueprint” and the body you were meant to have—not striving for unrealistic expectations about how much you weigh.

Reject the diet mentality The bottom line is that dieting isn’t sustainable. So the first principle of intuitive eating is to stop dieting. That includes throwing away diet books and magazine articles that promise fast weight loss, and rejecting any meal plans that dictate what or how much you can eat. Honor your hunger One reason dieting doesn’t work is because it can leave you feeling deprived and physically hungry—which can trigger binging and overeating. So instead of counting calories simply pay attention to your body’s hunger cues. Eat a sufficient amount of all food groups to keep your body “fed” and satiated. Once you learn to recognise these signals in your own body, it becomes much easier to trust your instincts and repair unhealthy relationships with food. Make peace with food Give yourself “unconditional permission to eat.” A wonderful

Challenge the food police The “food police” are those voices in your head that tell you it’s good to eat fewer calories and it’s bad to eat dessert; your psyche’s way of clinging to the dieting rules you’ve heard over the years. Chasing the guilt away is an important step in embracing intuitive eating. Respect your fullness Yes, it’s important to eat when you’re hungry, but it’s also important to stop when those hunger cues are no longer

Discover the satisfaction factor The satisfaction factor has to do with noticing and appreciating the taste and texture of food, and the environment in which you’re eating. Getting satisfaction from your food is about truly understanding what feels good and what doesn’t. When you bring the pleasure back to eating, you can truly feel satisfied after a meal and stop eating for other reasons such as anxiety, loneliness, boredom, anger, or stress.

Exercise: Feel the difference You don’t have to go to the gym every day while following an intuitive eating approach, but it is important to move your body on a regular basis. Exercise can boost mood, strengthen the heart and cardiovascular system, and increase lean muscle mass.

Morning - Cardio Most consider working out first thing in the morning the best way to begin an exercise regime, and they wouldn't be wrong - if you can manage to make it out of bed early, that is. Morning workouts are an excellent way to kick-start the day, wake up your muscles and get blood pumping around your body. One of the best morning workouts would be going for a run, jog or brisk walk which will get your heart rate up and jumpstart your metabolism and calorie burning potential. Running is quite a demanding exercise, and your muscles can be stiffer following a good night’s sleep; for that reason, it’s important that you warm up properly to prevent injury. You may also be likely to workout in the morning on an empty stomach, and for that reason, low-intensity cardiovascular exercise is recommended as your body won’t draw energy from your muscles. Instead, this type of workout will burn fat for energy, which is beneficial for weight/fat loss.

Lunchtime HIIT If you’re a lunchtime exerciser it’s likely you’ll be short on time, squeezing in a workout during the working day or in between running errands. For that reason, a short, sharp full-body HIIT workout is a good idea. The aim is to maximise your calorie burn, raising your heart rate quickly, before recovering briefly and pushing yourself again. Doing HIIT during the day can be very effective, as it causes an ‘after burn’ effect. This is because the intensity of the exercise causes an increased need for oxygen, so we end up with an oxygen shortage. This boosts your metabolism and burns more calories. HIIT workouts can also help to boost your productivity and energy levels. Evening Strength Training Strength training is a great option for an evening workout, as it’s when your glycogen stores are at their fullest, meaning you’ve got the power and energy to smash your way through a tough workout and push your body. In the evening, you will also have higher testosterone levels as well as a higher anaerobic capacity which can make you stronger. Physiologically, your body is in a better state to exert its full potential. Training at night is associated with a higher power output in both resistance and endurance sports.

Cervical cancer rates rising sharply among young women A steep rise in rates of cervical cancer among young women is largely down to fears over screening tests, experts are warning. Cancer Research UK said new figures show a decade-long lack of progress in tackling the disease, with worryingly low numbers of women attending screening. While the death of TV star Jade Goody in 2009 boosted the numbers of young women seeking screening, that effect has now long worn off, the charity

said. The latest figures show that 3,192 women on average are diagnosed with cervical cancer each year, with most of these in younger age groups. This includes around 400 cases in the last year among women aged 25 to 29. When it comes to rates, there were 12 cases per 100,000 women aged 25 to 29 in 2004/06, rising to 18.5 cases

per 100,000 in 2015/17 - a 54 per cent increase. In the long run, experts believe the combined effect of better screening and the success of the human papillomavirus (HPV) jab given to schoolchildren - which protects against cervical cancer - will lead to the disease being virtually eliminated. But in the meantime, there is concern about dropping screening

rates, with surveys showing that young women feel embarrassed or worry the tests will will hurt. Figures published by Public Health England (PHE) earlier this month show that just 70 per cent of women aged 25 to 49 were adequately screened in the last three years - way below the"acceptable" target of 80 per cent. For women aged 50 and over, 76 per cent were screened. The data also showed that fewer than half (48 per cent) of women receive the results of their cervical screening tests within two weeks significantly below the NHS target of more than 98 per cent. Overall, cervical cancer rates in the UK among all ages fell from 18.8 per 100,000 in 1985/1987 to 9.4 cases per 100,000 in 2004/2006. Cancer Research UK's chief executive Michelle Mitchell said: "These figures show how research has protected thousands of people from cervical cancer, but they also highlight a worrying trend that shows progress is stalling and stagnating, which could undermine this success. "Cervical cancer is one of the few cancers that can be prevented through screening, and now the disease is far less common in the UK. But these life-saving programmes can't help people they can't reach, which is why it's important for us to continue to raise awareness and carry out research into how screening could be improved for hard-to-reach groups."

Speed Limits All roads in Spain have a maximum permitted speed limit. However, that limit not only varies depending on the characteristics of the road, but also the type of vehicle, and (in some cases) the driver. As always when we talk about speed limits we must offer the same reminder however, the maximum permitted speed is exactly that, a maximum, it is not a target and the actual safe speed may be much lower depending on the road and weather conditions. That said, here is the overview of the generic maximum permitted speed on the roads by vehicle type, unless signs say otherwise. PASSENGER CARS AND MOTORCYCLES The maximum generic speed for cars and motorcycles on motorways is 120 kilometres per hour. On secondary roads, the maximum permitted speed is 90 kilometres per hour. In towns and cities, the maximum permitted speed is 50 kilometres per hour. BUSES Buses, and other vehicle derivatives

that have been adapted, must not exceed 100 kilometres per hour on motorways. On conventional roads, the maximum permitted speed is 90 kilometres per hour. On other conventional roads out of town they cannot exceed 80 kilometres per hour. In the event of a bus carrying standing passengers (where permitted) the maximum permitted speed, whatever the type of interurban road, is 80 kilometres per hour. TRUCKS On motorways and highways, trucks, articulated vehicles, tractors and vans cannot exceed 90 kilometres per hour. On conventional roads outside of towns, the maximum permitted speed is 80 kilometres per hour.

SPECIAL TRANSPORT Any vehicle which falls into this category, namely a bus carrying school children and displaying the yellow school bus sign, or a vehicle carrying goods classed as dangerous, the maximum permitted speed must be reduced by 10 kilometres per hour. TOWING A TRAILER The maximum permitted limit on motorways and highways is 90 kilometres per hour when towing a light trailer (which has a maximum mass less than or equal to 750 kg) and 80 kilometres per hour when towing a nonlight trailer (greater than 750 kg). On conventional roads the maximum permitted speed is then 80 kilometres per hour. QUADS, TRICYCLES AND BICYCLES Vehicles with three wheels or “quads” have their speed limited to 70 kilometres per hour on any type of road where they are permitted to drive. Cycles, two and three wheeled mopeds and light quadricycles have a maximum speed of 45 kilometres per hour where permitted.

TALES FROM THE TOP FLIGHT ■ CHRIS DARWEN

sorry, oldest cup competition in world football.

What makes it worse is that Moyes picked an almost strongest XI - and didn’t get a shot on the Albion goal until the 89th minute. This cup defeat came off the back off of a 4-1 shellacking by Leicester in midweek, also at home. Unless Messrs Gold and Sullivan let Davieboy dip into the transfer kitty, their home turf might be the most impressive ground in the Championship next season.

chris@costablancapeople.com

I’ll open up today’s column with a warning - I’m taking it about as seriously as most teams took the FA Cup this weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll turn up. I’ll do a column. There might even be a couple of good moments in it. There might be a couple of new lines that impress and give themselves a chance of appearing again in the future. But, honestly, the last thing I want is to have to do the column again in a week or so’s time and I’m not that fussed on whether it is a winning column or not. Thankfully, we do have a little bit of Premier League action from last week we can reflect on once we’ve rounded up the 4th Round of the greatest,

I think Brentford and Leicester set the tone on Saturday lunchtime given their selections. I mean, seriously Brentan. You’re in the top four, it’s nailed on. Can you see Spurs, Manchester United or Arsenal doing enough to claw their way in? Of course not. So why not pick a fullstrength side and show the world you are interested in winning a trophy. I don’t care if they won and ‘he got it right’ - there’s every chance had Brentford elected to pick their firstteam rather than their B team that Leicester would have been dumped out. Except, Brentford chose their likely playoff semi-final defeat over a chance at beating a Premier League side currently in the Champions League places. Leicester won, I think - I turned off after they went 1-0 up in about three minutes. I gave Man City vs Fulham the same treatment. Call me a football intellect if you must, but after Fulham went 10 down and had a man sent off in the opening minutes I suspected it might have been game over. King Kloppo is currently using the FA Cup for his youngsters to learn how tough life can be in men’s football - namely by sticking them in the same team as Dejan Lovren and telling them to get on with it. The kids played Shrewsbury who gave the Premier League champions-elect a much tougher evening than Everton had in the previous round. The sharpest finish of the night even came from Shrewsbury - don’t let the fact it went into their own net devalue it in any way. My personal highlight from the match was those Liverpool fans on the socials squeeling about there being no VAR at Gay Meadow after the hosts’ penalty seemed to be given for a foul outside the area. Diddums.

Don’t foul League One footballers near the area then, defend properly. The Salopmen came from 2-0 down to get level, forcing the Liverpool boss to send the adults on to try and sort it out. They didn’t and it’s off to Anfield they go for a replay.

I’m sure I’ve already suggested that Sheffield United are a good shout to earn the right to be the side smashed at Wembley by either Liverpool or City. They saw off Millwall away with minimal fuss, Mo Besic scoring a goal that surprised ex-Everton player Leon Osman in the studio. I say they’d get

One man taking the FA Cup very seriously is Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer at United. He set United up with exactly the same tactics employed against the likes of Liverpool and City - sit deep and hit on the break. I jest, slightly, but United definitely had to get through the first ten minutes of proper FA Cup football on a proper FA Cup pitch before moving through the gears against Tranmere. The first-half did become slightly farcical with both Jesse Lingard and Phil Jones getting on the scoresheet. Not quite as farcical as losing 2-0 at home to Burnley, however. The ‘cloob’ are still backing OGS in public if not in the January transfer market where they are being linked to players like Carlos Tevez and Odion Ighalo as if it is 2013 all over again.

battered by City in this fictional FA Cup Final - the Blades managed to lose by a single goal in their Premier League match in the week. That said, it would have been by more had VAR bothered to check that Dean Henderson was on the edge of his six-yard box by the time he saved Gabby Jesus’ penalty.

Don’t forget, what West Ham United got when they begged David Moyes to return to the Athletics Stadium was a man who knows how to ‘win’. Unfortunately, it must have slipped his mind when another ex-Hammer’s boss Slaven Bilic brought his WBA to town and left with a 1-0 win.

Southampton and Spurs, two sides likely to finish just outside the European places this season, ended up with what neither side wanted - a draw and, therefore, a pesky replay. Lo Celso looks like an upgrade on the current version of Christian Eriksen (but then who wouldn’t be?) but Jose needs a couple

of new faces before Friday night if they are to have any hope of finishing in the top four or winning the FA Cup. I could understand Steve Bruce’s gameplan against Oxford, given that it had worked so well in the last two matches. At 0-0 in injury time, everyone expected Newcastle to score at least once and take the game from their League One opponents - just like they’d done against Chelsea the week before and Everton in midweek. Newcastle were outplayed by Oxford which will have amused the Saudi’s already thinking Mike Ashley’s asking price is a little pricey. Bruce said before the match he was making the FA Cup priority so we can assume his players didn’t catch it on social media. For me, Burnley probably made the right call chucking it in in their tie against Norwich. Sean Dyche’s lot are borderline relegation candidates - albeit unlikely - but are probably wise to exit quickly and focus on the league. People might disagree with that because they beat United 2-0 at Old Trafford the other day, but take a moment to reflect on that sentence and realise that is not the sign of a team safe in the Premier League. Norwich, on the other hand, need to win any game going at the moment to remember what it feels like often enough to get them going again. They’ll be delighted they are in the hat. Has Frank Lampard finally lost confidence in Kepa after his tomfoolery against Newcastle and then in the draw against Arsenal? Big Willy started in Hull and Chelsea progressed 2-1, but the topic of the overly-priced-non-shotstopper refuses to go away. Michy B reminded Lamps that he is a viable option up front seeing as Tammy scores most of his goals against Championship level sides anyway.

Elche CF, What a Week! It started on Wednesday evening at the Martinez Valero Stadium. The arrival of Athletic Club Bilbao for the Copa del Rey was without doubt a great draw. The atmosphere was fantastic as the Athletic fans and Elche faithful filled the lower tier, a crowd of 15,000. The famous red and white shirts of Bilbao came out strong, their la Liga experience showed and at 5 minutes Elche found themselves one down, after a well worked move finished off by Inaki. In reply the green and white of Elche raised their game, with long passes landing accurately and many set moves worked to perfection. Bilbao were getting frustrated and giving away free kicks. On 42 minutes the Martinez Valero erupted when Dani Calvo popped in a header from close range. The second half came and went with few chances for both sides. Extra time was added and then it went to nail biting penalties. Proper Cup drama. Elche went 3 – 1 up but cracked under the pressure and went out of the Cup. Sunday’s game was away at Almeria. The game started slowly as early chances were squandered. Finding the back of the net proved difficult. Elche had a good chance on 20 minutes as

Yacine pulled his shot wide. Elche were awarded a penalty, as Nunoz from Almeria picked up a 2nd yellow card and was sent off, but Fidel missed from the spot. Early in the second half, shots are coming in from both sides and the yellow cards kept coming too. In the 63rd minute Fidel made up for his penalty miss, by flicking the ball over the keeper for 0 -1. On 88 mins the win was sealed as Pere Milla headed a superb goal from the corner. For the first time in years, Elche are now in the play off

position for La Liga promotion. Book to join the EuroTourGuide Coach Tour for the next home match at the Martinez Valero against Malaga on Saturday 1st February 2020. It is 20€ per adult for return travel and match ticket in the Fondo Sur Cubierta, picking up from the Orihuela Costa, Torrevieja Carrefour, Quesada, Rojales and La Marina. https://eurotourguide.com/en /coach-tour/Sporting-Events
