Yo voy campaign offers discount train tickets Spain’s train operator RENFE has launched a special promotion named 'Yo Voy', which offers 25,000 seats on the new Euromed service between Alicante and Barcelona for just 22 euros one-way in economy class, and taking less than four-and-a-half hours.

The discounted service runs between January the 13th and February the 29th.

Tickets can be purchased now via the RENFE website, but the advice is to be quick as the campaign often sells out.

The promotion also includes discounts of between 50 and 70% for trips from Alicante to Girona and Figueres.

Chinese acrobatic display in Torrevieja The Acrobatic Circus of China is set to perform in the Auditorium of Torrevieja this Friday, January 10th at 8pm.

Continued from page 1 takes a backseat to the Three Kings of biblical lore. On the eve of 5th January , children leave their shoes by the door in hope that the Three Kings will leave gifts inside during their overnight visit.

The day before Three Kings Day is a day for parades and processions throughout Spain. The young and young-at-heart alike line the streets, all eager to get a glimpse of the kings. The parades represent the journey made by the travellers on camels to Bethlehem.

The Three Kings throw sweets and sometimes small toys into the crowd, which is full of eager parade-goers trying to catch as many as possible.

Orihuela Costa In the grand scheme of things, the parade on the coast is fairly new and still growing and evolving. The cavalcade weaves its way through the streets from Antonio Vicea Square, passing through Calle Nicolás de Bussy, Calle Jade and culminating at Zenia Boulevard Shopping Centre.

This year however, the local government decided to make the parade earlier in the day with the parade setting off around midday and arriving at the shopping centre around 1pm.

The change in time didn’t seem to dampen people’s enthusiasm, although the numbers lining the streets seemed less than in previous years. As always the parade itself centred around the Three Kings, although this year saw the Magi travel together as opposed to having individual floats. There was an eclectic mix of biblical characters and scenes entwined with dancers, musicians and entertainers.

The procession was greeted by crowds at Zenia Boulevard where the children were given the opportunity to

give their letters to the King of their choice and adults could enjoy the entertainment and all the shops, bars and restaurants had to offer late into the night.

Torrevieja In Torrevieja, the cavalcade started just before 6pm with the kings arriving to the port by boat in the usual dramatic fashion where they were received by the mayor Eduardo Dolón. The lavish parade, with over 400 participants in costume, then made its way through the town towards the main square before it stopped at the church where the parish priest Pedro Payá was waiting to greet the kings.

Viral video Elsewhere in Spain, a video has gone viral showing one of the kings aggressively throwing sweets into the crowd.

The attitude of king Melchor received mixed reactions online as videos emerged of the white king in the Terrassa parade pelting the crowd with sweets. The surreal video shows the king violently launching fistfuls of sweets at the crowd, but some have come out in defence of his actions claiming that he was reacting to taunts from the crowds. The video has been viewed 2.6 million times since Sunday night’s parade.

Woman hospitalised during Alicante Three Kings Parade A 74 year old female spectator was hospitalised after she was struck in the eye by a toy thrown as part of the Three Kings cavalcade in Alicante.

According to reports made by the Department of Security in the city of Alicante, the incident happened as the parade reached the Portal of Elche Plaza on the city’s Rambla. Two other men, aged 76 and 58 years of age, were also hospitalised for chest pain and a bad fall,

respectively, while five similar accidents were treated on site.

Towns and cities across Spain traditionally celebrate the arrival of the Three Kings on 5th January with the royal visitors arriving and being paraded around the streets of the town.

Members of the procession typically throw sweets and toys to children who fill their pockets or sacks with the early treats from the Kings.

Reach Out results rocket!

After completing their end of year totals, it became known to the Board at Reach Out that once more the support and help given

by Reach Out to the Homeless in Torrevieja had increased by a considerable amount. Breakfasts served increased from 7818 in 2018, to 8739 at 31st December 2019.

The Comedor which supplies cooked lunches five days a week, showed an increase of

866 from the 2018 total of 7613 to 8479. The 2017/2018 totals had also shown an increase similar to 2018/2019. This trend is a cause for concern at the Charity as the increase would eventually outstrip the current facilities available. Seating a maximum of 65 in the Comedor, this is quite often full to capacity especially during inclement weather. It is with the dedication and efforts of the Volunteers that the success of Reach Out is evident when results like this are achieved. On Christmas Eve, the Homeless clients enjoyed a Christmas Lunch prepared by a team of Volunteers who decorated the tables, cooked

the food and then served the clients rather than have them queue as usual. Photo shows some of the team on the day.The Board wish to thank all those who have donated, bought in our shops, provided food etc and volunteered in any way throughout the year, for their dedication and support. A special mention must go to the Staff and children at the Costa Blanca Swedish School in Orihuela Costa, where a marvellous €137 was raised by pupils during a School Bazaar day where they made cakes, buns, sweets and toys as well as offering games etc. to raise funds, not only for the school but also Reach Out. The photo shows some of the students with Headteacher Ingela presenting the donation to President David Young, who had prepared a special Certificate of Appreciation for the School.

Another annual Christmas event was the Quiz Night at Harry’s Bar in Quesada where Joanne organises the event in aid of Reach Out, and on 19th December a full house got the grey matter

working overtime and after the quiz and Raffle the sum of €374.29 was passed to David Young for the Charity. Joanne and the patrons of Harry’s Bar donate regularly during the year and David presented Joanne with a Certificate of Appreciation in thanks for their generosity.

The next event is a Beetle Drive on 21st February at Captains Bar, Punta Marina. Tickets include a finger buffet and Raffle and cost 10€ per person. Tables of four are ideal for this night of merrymaking, but everyone is welcome. Organisers claim that , “If you haven’t been to a Beetle Drive you haven’t lived”, so call into Captains Bar or any of Reach Out’s shops to get your ticket, numbers are limited due to space available.

Reach Out is always in need of volunteers - drivers are currently in short supply - so please call in and see if you can offer a few hours of your time.

Green fingered group of gardeners grow If you have an interest in gardening or perhaps are keen to learn, then the Vega Baja Garden Club could be the thing for you in 2020.

The Vega Baja Garden Club meets on the first Monday of each month (except for July, August and January) at Bar Trasgu, Formentera del Segura from 2pm to 4pm. Group spokesperson Elizabeth Martin told the Costa Blanca People, “We’re a mixed bag of folks all with the common interest of gardens.

Some members have large gardens, but most of us have small gardens, terraces or balconies with a variety of pot plants. We also have the occasional group outing; the picture here shows club members on the visit to Cordoba Patio Festival.”

There are no membership fees, just a small charge of 2 euro per person entrance fee, for which you receive a raffle ticket; the raffle is drawn at the end of the meeting, and the prizes are plants for your terrace or garden. Food and drink are available to purchase at the bar.

New members and guest speakers are always welcome, even if you only live here part time. Elizabeth said, “You don’t need to be a professional gardener, but if you have had an experience in designing and developing a new garden or refurbishing an existing one, please come and share that with us. Tell us about any difficulties you had and how you dealt with them. We have a laptop and a projector available and can help you put your photos into a presentation.”

Derek Acorah dies Former resident of Catral, and probably the UK’s best known TV psychic Derek Acorah has died. The former host of British reality show "Most Haunted," died at age 69.

His wife, Gwen Acorah Johnson, announced the news of Acorah's passing on her Facebook page.

"Farewell my love! I will miss you forever!" she wrote, adding that he passed away after a "very brief illness."

Days before his passing, a post on his Facebook page said Acorah was suffering from the flu.

Acorah was best known for his work as the guest medium in the British paranormal reality TV series "Most Haunted" from 2002 to 2005.

Yvette Fielding, his co-host on "Most Haunted," tweeted, "Our condolences go out to Derek's family at this time x."

Born in Liverpool in 1950, Acorah was a professional football player in Australia until his late 20s when a leg injury forced him to leave the sport.

Acorah returned to the England and became a popular spiritual medium, appearing on radio and TV shows since the early 1990s.

In 2017, he appeared on the British reality television series "Celebrity Big Brother" and finished in fourth place.

Acorah was planning several live performances in the UK for February and May, according to his website. He recently split his time between the UK and his home in Catral, Spain.

Guardia Civil are investigating the sale of two elephant tusks, offered for sale online by an individual near Barcelona for €5000.

An investigation was launched in December by the Nature Protection Service of the Guardia Civil (SEPRONA) after several advertisements began to appear online offering the tusks for private sale.

The elephant listed with a high degree of protection in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), so officers launched an investigation to determine the origin of the tusks.

The owner told the officers that he brought the tusks from Mallorca about two years ago and that he did not have any documentation proving his legal

ownership or the origin of the tusks. It is therefore possible that the man could have incurred a crime against wildlife for the possession and trade of threatened species.

The tusks were in perfect condition,

adorned with seals, engraved in metal rings and mounted on a wooden base.

Prosecutor wants 15 years for abuser The public prosecutor has asked for a 15 year jail sentence to be imposed on a man accused of consistently beating, kicking and raping his girlfriend during their relationship in Alicante.

According to the Superior Court of Justice of the Valencian Community (TSJCV), the relationship lasted seven months and during that time, the victim was raped at least three times. The man is also accused of punching and kicking

his partner every two or three days over the seven month span of their relationship, as well as exercising control over the victim such as not allowing her to leave the house alone.

A hearing is scheduled for Thursday of this week when the prosecutor will formally request a series of sentences for crimes which will add up to a total sentence of 15 years.

Henry’s family asks authorities not to forget “We are all Henry." This was the message on the banner held by the family and friends of Henry Alejandro Jiménez, 21, during a protest held recently in front of the City Council of Orihuela a year on from his disappearance.

Supported by the European Foundation for Missing Persons QSDglobal and by members of the municipal corporation, including the Mayor of Orihuela Emilio Bascuñana, a dozen family and friends of the Colombian-born young man who lived in Orihuela Costa have called for advances in the investigation and that the case is not forgotten. Banners also had sentiments such as ‘Without you there is no life’ and ‘Enough of silences’.

The group was headed by Henry's mother, Gina Marín, who said she still cries tears of despair after a year in which she has not heard from his son, a year in which the family remains "broken, without life," she said. "We ask

that you do not leave the case in oblivion, that you do not file it, that justice be done. We don't want him to be one more person missing in oblivion," she added.

The young man's mother explained that her son disappeared in strange circumstances on 1st January, 2019, after a New Year's Eve party, which he celebrated with a group of friends in Orihuela Costa, but Henry left after allegedly being hit by his roommate.

"We do not understand that the person who beat up my son has not been punish because it is his fault he disappeared. I do not say he killed him, but there is a video where he can be seen beating Henry in front of everyone without any reason. No one says anything and Henry does not retaliate, but lowers his head.”

After the alleged fight the family clam Henry was thrown into the street and again no-one tried to help him, but

continued to video the incident.

“I ask for justice for my son. I knew something had happened to him, when he did not call me on day one, he never not called me when he was away from home."

On 2nd January last year Gina went to the house where Henry had spent New Year's Eve, but says they would not open the door to her. It was then that she registered his disappearance at the Civil Guard headquarters in Pilar de la Horadada.

"The lieutenant of the Civil Guard told me that he was calm, that Henry would surely appear and that he could have lost his memory because of the blows he received and by lying somewhere, but a year has passed and where is my son lying? "she asks.

Henry's personal belongings, a cell phone, a watch and his wallet, were in the house and were handed over to the Civil Guard as evidence. "The only thing

we know is that at 8 in the morning my son was in a corner of the house where he was beaten and was calling for me shouting 'mom, mom' and nobody helped him," said Gina. She said that she still has hope that her son "is in a corner of Spain because he has lost his memory."

Henry's brother, Andrés Jiménez, who from the outset has been very active in the search for his sibling and has criticised the "silence" of those who were at the New Year's Eve party "because they only said that they beat my brother a few days later and we wondered why they didn’t mention this before." He also believes it odd that none of Henry's friends attended any of the rallies.

The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana said that the Oriolan consistory remains "at the entire disposal of the family to do everything in our power" while emphasising that

they continue to maintain hope and need to continue "contributing to clarify the issue as soon as possible".

Clarity After Henry’s disappearance, who was studying second year of Baccalaureate, several searches were mounted and in addition to police and other security and emergency personnel, volunteers from the local community took part.

However, the searches were unsuccessful and there is still no clue as to where Henry is. Neither the searches carried out nor the police investigation has thrown any light on the case and the Civil Guard keeps any findings in almost absolute secrecy, giving no details to the family or the public.

Henry’s family continue to dispute that his disappearance has been voluntary and they continue to ask for the collaboration of the party goers and any member of the public to clarify what happened.

Bronchiolitis outbreak A total of 45 children remained admitted in seven public hospitals across the province of Alicante, according to figures provided by the Department of Health.

Bronchiolitis is a common disease in the winter months, but this year it is hitting with particular intensity, which has forced dozens of children to be admitted to hospital since the outbreak began about a month ago. In some cases, children have had to be admitted to intensive care units because they need respiratory support.

Since the beginning of December, Spain is experiencing the peak of the highest incidence of acute bronchiolitis, which mainly affects children under two years of age, and the epidemic is expected to last for at least two more weeks, according to the Spanish Emergency Society of Pediatrics (SEUP).

The disease manifests itself through symptoms such as cough, nasal mucus, fever and

respiratory distress that can last between two and three weeks. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 20 percent of children will have an episode of bronchiolitis in their first year of

life. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the cause of the highest proportion of cases and the most severe forms. Most of the cases treated can be managed at home by following a paediatrician’s instructions. Only babies who have been premature or who have heart disease or lung problem are usually admitted.

Being a disease caused by viruses, the Spanish Society of Pediatric Emergencies says there is no treatment and medications used for asthma are not useful in

acute bronchiolitis, although both diseases have some similarity.

"The most effective measures are those that increase the child's comfort, such as the cleaning of nasal secretions and the administration of anti-thermal agents when there is fever," says the society.

Healing occurs in 2 to 3 weeks and only children who are hospitalised will need help with breathing apparatus.

Absence of flu Luckily cases of the flu continue at very low levels across the province of Alicante, according to the data supplied by the Department of Health, and the highest incidence of the disease is not expected until the end of January, precisely when the cases of bronchiolitis are expected to decrease.

According to local family doctors there is also currently a high number of patients being affected by gastroenteritis, caused by bacteria in food or a virus; a very common illness at this time of year and very contagious.

Around 300,000 calls made Easyjet passenger dies to 112 from Alicante province on flight from Spain The Emergency Coordination Centre, which houses the 112 operator team, has received a total of 3,002,716 calls throughout 2019 from across the Valencian Community. July and August were the months with the most activity, with 286,842 and 292,586 calls, respectively. The Beneixama fire and the DANA were the incidents that gave rise to the most claims across the province of Alicante, with the area clocking up around 300,000 calls across the year.

Unlike previous years, the DANA that hit the Vega Baja in September meant that in that month the number of calls approached the maximums usually only seen in July and August, with 279,907 as detailed by the Generalitat in a statement The Emergency Coordination Centre has explained that the increase in calls in summer occurs, historically, due to the increase in the population from other autonomous communities and outside of Spain and the fact that most forest fires occur in summer time. In 2019, the heat waves caused the Beneixama fire in July and those of Casas Bajas and Náquera (Valencia) in August.

Also last year there was an increase in calls in April, caused by the cold spell that affected manly the province of Alicante during Holy Week.

The registration of calls and their origin allows authorities to evaluate the incidence of recorded emergencies and is also used to account for the response capacity of the Security and Emergency Agency to the different types of incidents that occur in the Valencian Community.

There was a total of 776,704 incidents handled in 2019, most of them sanitary (460,827), followed by those related to security (115,860). With regard to the provincial distribution, the largest number of incidents was recorded in Valencia, with a total of 383,074, followed

by Alicante, with 299,682 and Castellón, with 87,055.

The 112 Comunitat Valenciana telephone also answers calls in other European languages and records show that the total number of incidents attended by calls from residents or tourists who did not use Spanish or Valencian to communicate was 16,596. Of those calls, English with 13,133 calls was the most used language when phoning the Emergency telephone number, followed by French with 2,043 calls and

German with 1,390 incidents managed in this language.

Improved facilities In 2019, the Emergency Coordination Centre inaugurated a new Emergency Room and this has allowed the Security and Emergency Agency to increase its operations, by integrating in the same space the coordinated agencies (Police of the Generalitat, CEMPOL or Prevention of fires) and increase the technical staff of the Agency and the technological capability. This year, 20 years have elapsed since the implementation of the 112 single European emergency telephone number in the Valencian Community. It began on 21st June, 1999 and, after a few weeks in tests, has served 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Since that day it has received a total of 71,586,048 calls.

An easyJet passenger who became unwell during a flight from Spain to the UK has died. The 63-year-old man fell ill on New Year's Day on the journey from Alicante to Newcastle.

He was given medical assistance on board and paramedics treated him when the aircraft landed. But he was pronounced dead a short time later.

His death is not thought to be suspicious.

In a statement, the airline said: "easyJet can confirm that a passenger was taken ill on board flight EZY6418 from Alicante to Newcastle on 1st January.

"Medical assistance was provided to the passenger on board and the crew requested paramedics to attend upon landing to provide further medical assistance, however the passenger sadly passed away.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the passenger and we are offering support and assistance at this difficult time.

"The safety and wellbeing of our passengers and crew is our highest priority."

A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "At about 1.35pm on New Year's Day police received a report that a 63year-old man had fallen unwell on a flight travelling to Newcastle Airport from Alicante.

"Paramedics attended to the man when the flight landed in Newcastle, however, he was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

"There are not believed to have been any suspicious circumstances around the man's death and a report will now be prepared for the coroner."

Algorfa dedicates a park to the Guardia Civil The Algorfa City Council has paid tribute to the Guardia Civil on its 175th anniversary, dedicating a park in the municipality in its honour. The park, located around the Algorfa golf course, was dedicated in a ceremony in front of a large audience of residents and members of the Guardia Civil of Almoradí.

Distinguished guests included the mayor of Algorfa, Manuel Ros, and the Colonel Chief of the Guardia Civil Command of Alicante, José Hernández Mosquera.

During the event, a commemorative plaque was unveiled and the Spanish Anthem was played whilst the Spanish flag was raised. This flag will now fly permanently in the park as a reminder of the dedication.

The mayor of the town explained that this commemoration is a gesture of recognition for the service of the Corps to the town’s citizens throughout all the years since its foundation.

In addition, Manuel Ros wanted to highlight the important work done by the Guardia Civil during the recent DANA which flooded much of the region of the Vega Baja in September and the devastation from which is still being experienced by many.

The Colonel Chief of the Guardia Civil Command of Alicante, José Hernández Mosquera, wanted during his speech to give his thanks to the people of Algorfa for this recognition.

Orihuela confirms municipal bus routes The Councillor for Urban Transportation, José Galiano, has signed an renewal agreement for the municipal transport routes across the municipality of Orihuela, with José Pedro García, representing Autocares Costa Azul.

The bus routes for Orihuela Costa will continue under the current schedule, with the Zenia Boulevard - Aguamarina Health Centre route will maintain 9 outbound and 7 return journeys from Monday to Friday between the months of September to July. This route will also feature 9 round trips during the months of July and August. Similarly, the Zenia Boulevard - Hospital de Torrevieja route continues with 9 round-trips from Monday to Friday between the months of September to July and 9 round trips every day during the months of July and August.

The Councillor also explained that with the signing of this agreement "we are introducing new services such as a new line between Orihuela Costa and Orihuela

city centre", with the following itinerary and stops: Zenia Boulevard Shopping Centre, Playas de Orihuela Town Hall, Torrevieja University Hospital, Urbanisation Entrenaranjos and ending at Orihuela Bus Station. This service will be provided throughout the year except for the month of August with the following schedule: from Orihuela Costa to the city centre: 7:00am - 1:00pm – 7:00pm, and from the city centre to Orihuela Costa: 9:30am - 3:25pm - 8:55pm.

The Councillor also explained that the amount of the ticket for these municipal routes will be the minimum rate established by the Department of Transportation.

For his part, José Pedro García said that the objective of the agreement, which will last one year, is “to promote urban mobility and sustainability, optimising the resources we have available through the reorganisation of the routes, minimising buses running with hardly any passengers”.

44 suffer food Five migrant boats in first poisoning three days of 2020 after party The Ministry of Health has launched an investigation into food served at a New Year’s Eve party in Molina de Segura which left 44 people with food poisoning. According to the General Directorate of Public Health, none of the people affected have been hospitalised but that the Public Health Protocol has been activated after the reports. The symptoms indicate that the illness could be salmonella but until further analyses are carried out by food safety technicians, authorities cannot rule anything out.

Sources say the number of people affected by the food poisoning is still on the increase and since New Year’s Day more cases are being discovered since hundreds of people attended the party.

Protocol dictates that samples must be collected at the restaurant and an analysis carried out to determine the origin of the infection.

Salmonella can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea and is contracted by eating food infected by the salmonella bacterium. Symptoms can appear between 8 and 72 hours after the consumption of infected foods and can last up to ten days.

The owners of the premises which hosted the party deny that the outbreak originated at their establishment saying “There is no proof that we are responsible for this outbreak.”

Meanwhile, those involved await the official test results.

Five migrant boats have been intercepted along the Alicante coast since New Year’s Day with a total of 45 people on board.

The five boats landed in the first three days of the year – one in Pilar de la Horadada with eight people on board, two boats in Torrevieja with a total of 23 people and another in Alicante with 14 people.

Torrevieja on Thursday morning had three children on board. Another boat which landed on Mil Palmeras beach, had eight men on board and came ashore shortly before 10pm. The men were brought to the Guardia Civil barracks in Torrevieja along with the 13 people who arrived in Torrevieja – all of whom were treated by members of the Red Cross and declared to be in a good state of health.

First birth of the year at Terra Natura A coconut lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) was the first baby animal born in 2020 at Terra Natura in Benidorm.

This is the second successful hatching of a coconut lorikeet chick at the Benidorm facility after a breeding programme was established in March in collaboration with the FIEB (Foundation for research in ethology and biodiversity) of Toledo. The first chick was hatched in August 2019 and the second in January 2020.

The adult birds involved the breeding programme were acquired by the park after a seizure operation was carried out by police as part of an investigation into the illegal trafficking of species.

Spain is considered a strategic point in the illegal trafficking of protected species.

The Iberian Peninsula also sees a large volume of illegal trade of macaws and parrots from Central America and Africa.

The newborn chick will remain in the nest for approximately two months, both

parents being responsible for providing the necessary food for its survival. After two months he will begin to leave the nest and make his first attempt at flying.

The coconut lorikeet usually inhabits jungle areas forming flocks of up to 20 members.

Terra Natura houses more than 1,500 animals, of 200 different species (98 of them protected or in danger of extinction) and is currently involved in 30 conservation projects and 19 breeding programmes.

Car ban on the horizon for local cities The Costa Blanca’s larger cities are said to be making preparations to close their streets to traffic in an effort to reduce pollution. Alicante, Elche and Alcoy are preparing for the pedestrianisation of their busiest streets to reduce traffic while Benidorm is set to install more than 200 charging points for electric cars.

Experts believe that almost the entire Alicante population breathed some amount of contaminated air in 2019 as a result of tropospheric ozone, a very complex pollutant, which is formed in the low atmosphere. Pollutants are emitted by vehicles – especially diesel vehicles, as well as industrial activity, sea and air traffic.

The latest figures for the Alicante region were revealed by the report "Ozone pollution in the Spanish State during 2019", which was published by Ecologists in Action and based on data collected in the eleven measuring stations throughout the province.

The province’s major municipal areas are trying to tackle pollution by introducing measures such as closing city centres to traffic, creating more pedestrian areas and the promotion of public transport and eco taxis. Pollution sensors will also be installed at key points in cities.

According to the Ecologists in Action Report, one of the worst areas of Alicante (where levels are higher than the recommended maximum as set out by the World Health Organisation) is the cement works at Alicante port which sees high levels of soot, metal particles, cement and pollen.

Alicante town hall is planning a series of anti pollution measures to tackle the issue, some of which were presented at the Climate Summit in Madrid by Alicante’s Mayor Luis Barcala.

Among the proposed initiatives is the incorporation of hybrid and electric vehicles to public transport; tax credits to encourage private individuals to opt for electric cars as well as more recharging points.

Alicante authorities have also designed a pedestrian system which will see an area of almost 23,000 square metres become free of traffic. The plans are set to be presented to residents this month.

Councillor for transport, José Ramón González explained that "It is a project that will change the model of the city, pedestrianising the centre and creating new shared platforms to make it more sustainable." The objective, he explained is “to give priority to the pedestrian, with more green areas, traffic calming, improving the lives of residents, reviving commercial activity and urban space, and enhancing the tourist attraction.”

One way streets will also see speed limits reduced to 30 kilometres per hour, with 50 kilometres per hour limits being maintained on Alicante city’s twoway streets, avenues and large roads.

According to the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Alicante, there are 715,111 daily trips in the city, 45% of them by private transport, 41% by foot, 12% by public transport and only 2% by bicycle. The creation of car parks in strategic places near the centre to

encourage commuters to leave their vehicles on the city’s outskirts is also being considered.

Plans to reduce pollution in Elche will begin mid-year with the pedestrianisation of the Corredora, which will eliminate the passage of some 5,000 vehicles per day. The centre will be closed to traffic, with the exception of residents, emergency vehicles, public services and loading and unloading at agreed times.

Elche’s councillor for transport, Esther Díez explained that the city’s layout, with tall closely spaced buildings,

makes cleaning the air difficult and can cause the accumulation of harmful particles. In an attempt to clean the city’s air, Elche is renovating its urban bus fleet and has already introduced two hybrid vehicles. It is expected that by 2023, there will be 20 such vehicles.

The same will happen with Elche’s taxi service when half of the 18 new taxi licences to be granted in the coming months will only be awarded to zero emission vehicles. Within two years, all taxi drivers that want to renew their licences will have to have a zero emission or Eco label vehicle.

200 new electric recharging points in its city centre car parks. Authorities also plan to add to the available parking in order to reduce drivers having to do ‘laps’ of the streets in order to find a parking space in the city.

Alcoy is also undertaking a progressive pedestrianisation project in three specific areas of the city centre and old town which will see traffic, and therefore pollution levels, reduced.

Officials have also commissioned an in depth study on pollution in the city, after which a series of other measures – such as improvements to public transport – will be introduced.

Costa Calida drug smugglers busted The Guardia Civil has busted a drug smuggling gang at gun-point in the Mar Menor region of Murcia. Investigations began in September, when the number of attacks on local people increased, the majority of them reportedly being by drug addicts.

Further police work uncovered a network of drugs being distributed in the Mar Menor region. The gang employed known drug users to sell drugs, dishing out beatings and stabbings if they refused.

Evidence showed the gang supplied other distributors and users from all over the Mar Menor region. The arrested are all Spanish, aged between 21 and 38 years old, and live locally. San Javier Court has ordered three of the five to be remanded in custody.

Paul Canfield, who founded Street Angels, a community group aimed at working with local authorities to tackle street crime in the area, said he was “over the moon” with the arrests.

“If the group was related to local street crime, it’s an amazing result,” the 51 year-old said.

“Every time some of these people are taken off the streets, it makes life a little safer,” he continued.

January Days Out: The Craft Market in Jávea Port For several years running the Javea Port shopkeeper's association and Amata - the regional craft association - have been working together to organise a small but select craft market every Saturday and Sunday morning on the promenade near the Port. The market opens at 11 am when artists and crafts people set up stalls to show what they have made with love, care and attention to detail. It's all their own work - nothing imported, nothing made in a factory and nothing just strung together using bits and pieces bought in a craft shop.

All in all a nice way to spend a Saturday or Sunday morning. Stroll along the Paseo Marítimo, have a drink or a little nosh at one of the many cafés, enjoy the view out to sea and mountains and then have a look at what all these creative people have produced, often to the live music of guitarist Victor Hugo.

Once you’re in the Port of Jávea, you can have a look at the famous Virgen de Loreto church, built of concrete in the shape of a big ship. Or visit the Casa del Cable (Cable House). This building stands on the site of the original Casa del Cable, the official telegraph-station that, back in the 1860’s, connected the Spanish mainland with Ibiza by means of a 100km long cable over the sea bottom. Increase in ‘fall’ rescues Firefighters have warned of an increase in rescues or even deaths of people who have fallen while living alone. The figures reflect an increase in the numbers of older people living alone in recent years as many of the interventions by fire crews have been due to elderly people falling at home – firefighters being called to the scene to break down the door when victims can’t get to the door. Head of Elche fire station Alberto Martín said that often fire crews are called to access houses where neighbours report they haven’t seen the occupant for several days and unfortunately, it turns out the person has died. Martín said that the increase in 2019 hasn’t been particularly significant compared to the previous year but that the number of this type of incident has been on the rise steadily over the last decade.

Also on the rise are animal related rescues which Martín says is in line with a societal increase in the awareness of animal welfare.

He described 2019 as an unusual year in terms of activity, especially due to the devastating floods in September which triggered a huge amount of activity for fire crews. In addition, there were a number of large industrial fires to tackle

– one at a factory in Crevillente and another at an illegal clothing factory near the airport which fire crews battled for about a week in order to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

The good news is that the figures show fire crews being called to the scene of serious accidents has decreased slightly.

In Elche, fire crews make an average of six emergency departures per day, each of which are attended by about twenty firefighters.

Firefighters recorded 170 cases of incidents in hard-to-reach areas due, above all, to the rise in popularity of mountain sports.

Helicopter rescues coordinated by the Elche fire station logged around 250 hours of flight in 2019.

When revealing the annual statistics to the press, Alberto Martín urged caution, stressing that those engaging in mountain sports should always exercise best practice to avoid the worst case scenario. He also said that the number of casualties in house fires could be halved if people simply made sure to install a smoke detector.

"People don't often realise it, but a smoke detector costs very little and can be a lifesaver,” said Martín.

U3A Strollers Saturday 4th Jan saw the Torrevieja U3A Stroller Group kicking the New Year off with a visit to San Javier. The group comprising about 30 members convened in a local car park and then set off on the short walk towards the main town square.

On their way there they were confronted

by Santa on his sleigh, together with four reindeer. They had presumably stopped for a coffee break on the way back to the North Pole! After this meeting the group

proceeded on their journey to the square where they were able to admire the marvellous nativity scene created there.

After a coffee and a natter in a local restaurant, the members returned to the car park to make their journey home. The visit, although very short, was enjoyable and everyone is now looking forward to the next stroll.

About the author: Annie Beaumont was born in Scotland and left as a baby. She grew up in various places around England and the Far East, before settling in Norfolk, where the novel is set.

Investigation continues into tragic drowning of British tourists in Mijas

Murcia New Year sex attacks under investigation

Nearly a week after three British citizens drowned in a swimming pool in the southern Spanish municipality of Mijas Costa, Málaga, the questions about what caused the tragic accident have only grown. The police version of events and that of the two women who survived the incident, the only witnesses, are contradictory.

Firstly, there are disagreements about whether or not the victims – a man and two of his children – knew how to swim. Secondly, whether the pool’s filter system could have created a current that dragged the bathers into the deep end.

On the day in question at around 1.30pm, the 112 emergency service line got a call about three people who had drowned in the pool, which is part of a holiday resort. By the time an ambulance crew arrived on the scene the victims were already dead, but the incident was not made public until five hours later. “The circumstances are so strange that we waited until the situation was clarified,” the 112 emergency services said at the time.

The small size of the swimming pool and the fact that three people died at the same time raised a lot of questions.

The Civil Guard began to answer these questions slowly but surely, but five days later and doubts remained.

The accident happened at Club La Costa World, a holiday complex that is divided into eight different resorts.

Spain’s National Police force is investigating the alleged sexual assault of three sisters on New Year’s Eve in Murcia, sources close to the case have told news agency Europa Press. The three women, who are from the United States, reported the case to the police and investigators are trying to locate the alleged attackers.

According to local newspaper La Opinión de Murcia, the alleged victims and assailants met in a pub during celebrations to welcome in the year 2020. The young women – aged 23, 20 and 18 – accompanied the three men to a private residence to continue partying.

It was there that the alleged attacks took place. Two of the women are alleged to have been raped, while the third managed to escape, albeit also having been assaulted, according to the police report.

The three victims are from Ohio, according to the information published in La Opinión de Murcia. One of the sisters had been studying in the southeastern Spanish city and was soon due to return to the United States. Her sisters were visiting her on vacation at the time of the incident.

The young women went to a medical centre to be submitted to a forensic examination aimed at corroborating the assaults that they claim to have suffered in their police report, a police spokesperson told Spanish news agency EFE.

December 22 with the intention of staying for a week. On 24th December, while they were sunbathing on the loungers by the pool, the children decided to enter the pool.

Measuring 15 meters by 10 meters, and with capacity for 89 people, the pool is concave, with steps on both sides. The deepest part, which goes down two meters, is in the middle.

Initial reports pointed to a problem with the filter system, which could have been sucking in water and creating a current. One of the employees who removed the bodies from the water also

told investigators, according to news agency EFE, that they had problems getting out of the water. But aquatic specialists from the Civil Guard checked the motors and valves of the pool system and did not find any irregularities. The autopsies concluded that all three of the family members died by drowning.

But hours later, the family released a statement via a local lawyer, Javier Toro.

Signed by the widow, Olubunmi Diya, the text made clear that she had never said that her relatives did not know how to swim. Her husband had swum when he was younger and her youngest daughter had taken swimming lessons days before their trip. The attorney pointed to a possible translation error of the statement that Olubunmi made to the Civil Guard.

The spokesperson for the Diya family raised the question this weekend as to why there wasn’t a lifeguard on duty in the area where the accident happened.

There are, however, life preservers by the water and signs in English and Spanish with the rules of the pool. Regulations in the Andalusia region state that pools that are greater than 200 square meters in surface area must have at least one lifeguard.

A specialist arrived on site recently to draw up a report. “The investigation is not yet over,” the same sources explained. There are mysteries still to be resolved in this exceptional case.

Toll free Another two motorways have become toll-free, much to the delight of locals and holidaymakers alike.

Campaigns to end the tolls on the AP-7 stretch starting from the Valencia province towns of Silla and finishing at the pictured exit in San Juan (Alicante province) have been ongoing for nearly 20 years, and the start of 2020 will see it become free of charge for the first time since the 1970s.

Tolls along this 157-kilometre section of the coastal highway from the French border to the Costa del Sol amount to about 150 percent of fuel costs for the same trek – and even when they were cheaper, they still added extra expense for long-distance drivers, especially commercial haulage firms.

To this end, the vast majority use the N-332 inter-provincial highway instead, which is free of charge. But the N-332 runs straight through the town centres of Favara, Bellreguard, L'Alqueria de la Comtessa, Palmera, and Oliva (Valencia province), and Gata de Gorgos, Benissa, Altea, Albir and l'Alfàs del Pi (Alicante province), where they are single-carriageway and in the heart of residential and shopping zones.

All these towns have suffered permanent, round-the-clock

gridlock, noise levels proven to be up to 50 percent higher than the World Health Organisation's recommended safe maximum, air pollution, damage to road surfaces and buildings – blackened rendering and wornout tarmac – hazardous situations for pedestrians, accidents, road rage and very long delays with traffic queues moving so slowly it is actually quicker to walk than to drive.

Farther up the AP-7, the stretch between the Sagunto (Valencia) and Castellón exit and the Tarragona exit will also become toll-free tonight, as will the 121 kilometres of the AP-4 between Sevilla and Cádiz.

The central government's public works ministry, which will now take over ownership and maintenance of these motorways, says the AP-7 from Valencia to Alicante will see an increase in traffic of around 30 percent, but that the trunk road 'will be able to handle it',

especially as it is often nearly empty at present.

The new 'free-of-charge' status for the AP-7 and AP-4 follow just a year after the tolls were scrapped on the AP-1, which runs from the cathedral city of Burgos in the centrenorthern region of Castilla y León to the town of Armiñón in the Basque Country province of Álava, the capital of which is Vitoria.

Main motorways in Spain without tolls are purely A-roads – such as the A-7 from Alicante to Málaga – as the 'P' in 'AP' stands for peaje, the Spanish word for toll.

Once you hit a road with a name that starts 'AP' rather than 'A', you should make sure you have your purse to hand.

It is not clear whether the newly-free AP-4 and AP-7 will be renamed as the A-4 and A-7, like the non-toll parts of these same motorways.

Welcome to Alcoy

History The first traces of human presence in the area date to c. 60,000 years ago, when Neandertal hunters settled here. A site with rock paintings, dating to c. 10,000/6,500 years ago, has been discovered near la Sarga. From around the mid-3rd millennium BC people started to move from the caves to the plain where cereals were grown, while mountain fortifications were erected After the Roman conquest of the Iberians, several rural villas were built in the area, as well as a necropolis. The town was established in 1256 by James I of Aragon, with the construction of a castle on a strategic position over the Serpis river, to secure the southern frontier of the Kingdom of Valencia during the Reconquista.

In 1291 the town was donated by King James II of Aragon to the Sicilian admiral Roger of Lauria; it will not return a royal possession until 1430.

During the War of Spanish Succession, Alcoi sided for the cause of archduke Charles, and was therefore besieged and stripped of numerous privileges, which started a period of decline In 1873 the workers of Alcoy revolted in the Petroleum Revolution.

Main sights Many outdoor rock paintings exist in Alcoi, and there are some ruins of an Iberian settlement with fragments of Greco-Roman pottery.

Midlife Crisis

I’ve been seeing a younger lad 24. He says he wants me to have a child with him. I already have three teenage children and thought my childbearing days were over at 43. My doctor says I am peri-menopausal. My boyfriend says he can’t go through life without having a child of his own. He is not much older than my eldest boy. I didn’t consider our relationship was anything but a bit of fun until this revelation. I don’t really want another child, but I told him I would consider it. It's also thrown up the question of whether I want to stay with him.

I am 52, and have started the menopause. Worryingly, I think about death all the time like there is a ticking clock over my head. I find I am very dissatisfied with the way things have turned out in my life, and what I haven‘t done.

It sounds like you are suffering a mid-life crisis, and it can be quite normal. Men can also suffer from this.

Some goals in your life may no longer be achievable, and you will need to come to terms with those and put them behind you. If any of your goals are still open to you, then try and accomplish them - it‘s never too late.

See your Doctor if your feelings are manifesting into panic attacks, or anxiety. Otherwise, try and embrace this turning point in your life. For women, 'the change' can be very upsetting and daunting. There’s no turning back and mourning over lost youth and the road not taken is pointless. Decide this is going to be the first day of the rest of your life, get things in order, sort out any problems, and make some changes.

When a woman is older the chances of becoming pregnant grow less, and you are approaching menopause. If you did not consider this relationship serious then it’s time to have a good think. Do you really want another child at your age? Teenagers are hard enough to deal with at your time of life, and you will be doing it again at nearly 60. I think the question you need to ask yourself is, ‘should I continue with this relationship?, more than, ‘do I want another child?’.

Spain sees worst year for gender violence deaths since 2015 The first victim of the year was called Rebeca Alexandra Cadete, and she was just 26 years old. She was stabbed to death by her boyfriend. Her five-year-old son was left without a mother. She had never filed a police report. The last victim of the year, Yulia S., 41, left another three children orphaned. She had also never raised any alarms, as happens in the overwhelming majority of cases. A total of 55 women were killed by their partners or ex-partners in Spain in the year 2019, which was the blackest in the last five years.

Not since 2015 has the number of domestic violence victims been so high.

As well as the women who lost their lives in such cases last year, there were also three children killed, bringing the total of youngsters lost due to domestic violence to 34 since the official records began in 2013.

It’s still too early to get any in-depth insight as to why this violence has seen an uptick, and it remains to be seen whether this will become a trend in years to come. Gender violence is a complex phenomenon and has numerous causes, but a number of specialists warn that, together with a lack of planned measures to combat the issue, one of the factors that has had an influence is the narrative of denial employed by emerging farright party Vox. The group has been arguing that

“violence has no gender,” going against the institutional consensus that has existed for years.

The majority of women killed by their partners have never sought help from the authorities, as was the case of Yulia S. and Rebeca Alexandra Cadete. In the last year, four out of every five (80 percent) had never filed any kind of report. This is the highest percentage since 2012. But the system also failed in the cases of the other 11 victims who did warn of the danger they were in, and in some cases, were even under police and judicial protection.

The year 2019 saw the official total of women killed by their partners or expartners in Spain hit the macabre milestone of 1,000. The figures date back to 2003, and now number 1,033. Last year was also the 15th anniversary of groundbreaking legislation passed by the Socialist Party (PSOE) government of Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero: the Organic Law of Comprehensive Protection Measures against Gender Violence, which has helped bring down the number of victims. In the first years of official figures there were around 70 victims every year, while in recent years the number has been around 50. The legislation also served to change the social perception of a crime that was considered to be a private issue, one that was to be

addressed behind closed doors.

Last year will also be remembered for the arrival of Vox in Spain’s institutions, and the party’s calls for laws that protect women to be repealed and demands that funds destined for combating gender violence be slashed. The far-right group took 24 seats (around 10 percent of the vote) in Spain’s lower house, the Congress of Deputies, at the inconclusive general election held in April. At the repeat election in November, however, it fared much better, taking 52 seats (15 percent of the vote), and becoming Spain’s third-biggest political force after the PSOE and the conservative Popular Party (PP).

“The behaviour of Vox means that victims are less trusting of the institutional protection that is offered to them, while the aggressors see their behavior as being reinforced,” explains Lucía Avilés, who is a magistrate and the founder of the Association of Female Judges. She is calling for “an in-depth and objective analysis to determine all of the causes” of the latest spike in the figures.

It is likely that a new government will be formed as we go to print on 7th January, headed by a coalition of the PSOE and left-wing group Unidas Podemos. If so, the administration will have to deal with the pending issues that have accumulated over the last year, a time during which Spain has been led by

a caretaker PSOE administration. These will include implementing the State Pact against Gender Violence, which was approved in 2017 but has barely been developed.

This parliamentary agreement includes, among other things, measures focused on combating the lack of official reports against abusers as well as steps to guarantee protection for those who do file a complaint.

Global strategy “Eighty percent of victims had never filed a single report, but we can find 100 percent of women in the health system, and so we can develop a global strategy

to protect them from there,” explains Miguel Lorente. The State Pact includes plans for doctors to be able to implement measures and questionnaires in order to detect and combat cases of violence, as well as getting help from local councils to spot cases before they are reported.

The head of the Women’s Foundation (Fundación Mujeres), Marisa Soleto, also draws attention to the other side of the coin: those women who did file reports but still ended up dead. “If we had managed to protect them over the years, we would be talking about 200 women still alive,” she says. “It’s the biggest failure of this whole period.”

2019 As a whole, had a few ups and downs within the local property market. Some months were stronger than others, but there were still plenty of buyers that purchased their own slice of our Heaven. 2020 property market As we end a decade that started in a deep crisis with the Spanish property market all but imploding in 2010, there are more headwinds around now than at any time since the recovery started back around 2013.

Spanish GDP grew by an annualised 2 percent in Q3 of 2019, but is on a downward curve. A slowing economy means fewer new jobs, and less wealth around to spending on housing. That said, the economy is still growing, so this is not yet a headwind, more like a tailwind losing force.

The jobless rate in Spain peaked at over 26 percent in 2013 and fell to 13.92 percent in Q3. But as you can see from the chart below, the rate of decline appears to be slowing down, as you would expect with a slowdown in GDP growth. On the other hand, wage growth is still a reasonable 4 percent, leaving the average worker with a long term contract better off.

Spain’s low birthrate, ageing population, and lower immigration levels means the population is barely growing, which is a kind of headwind for the economy and the housing market in general terms. True, the population has bounced back a bit after the decline of the

crisis years, but with the fertility rate standing at 1.33 in 2019 and fewer immigrants than during the boom years, population growth is forecast to be negligible in 2020, and negative in the next deace. A smaller population means fewer families and less demand for housing.

Though interest rates are close to historic lows, new mortgage lending has been volatile of late, and might be showing signs of running out of steam. Figures from the INE show new lending down 30 percent in August and September, and 2 perent in October, whilst more timely figures from the notaries show lending growing again by 9.5 percent in September and 8.1 percent in October. Though much of the turbulence in the mortgage market might be due to a new law introduced this year intended to protect borrowers, there are reasons to think the period of steady growth in new mortgage lending has come to an end.

What with all the economic and political uncertainty around in Spain consumers are feeling less confident, reports the Spanish bank BBVA. When consumers are feeling jumpy they usually spend and invest less. Housing is a big investment that is greatly helped by high

consumer confidence. he latest figures for October clearly show the Spanish property market going through a period of weaker demand, and figures from the Registrars for Q3 reveal that foreign buyers were down 5 percent and local buyers down 8.5 percent. It’s difficult to quantify but some experts think that the market is now oversupplied with new homes in places like the Costa del Sol, where new home buyers pay a premium that is not easy to justify. Any signs of trouble selling new projects in some segments will not be good for confidence.

Spanish house prices have been rising for the last few years, though recently it looks like prices have lost momentum. But in areas with strong demand, like the big cities and most popular resort areas, prices have risen to a level that no longer looks like a steal, so the bargain argument for buying in Spain is not as strong as it was, especially for foreign buyers. When you throw in transaction costs, bureaucracy, and the lack of professionalism in the sector, buying a home in Spain is no longer such an attractive proposition at this price, though it does depend on your segment.

Bilbao is one of the 20 most prosperous cities in the world The Basque city is the only Spanish city in the top-20 of the world's most prosperous cities, according to a study by the strategic consulting firm D&L Partners. Madrid didn’t make the top twenty, but it is not the only large capital in the world that has been excluded.

According to the Spanish newspaper, El País, New York, London and Paris also haven’t featured at the top in a report that not only measures the city's financial capacities, but also its inclusive economy. Being the richest region is not always synonymous with well-being.

The study commissioned by the Government of Biscay and the Bilbao City Council shows that to measure the economic development of a city, it is no longer enough just to apply traditional indicators. In this sense, he qualifies these barometers as "poor" and explains that the GDP, for example, does not calibrate the inequality that exists between citizens and that it has increased since the great recession of 2007.

The complete ranking is made up of a total of 113 cities and takes into account the quality of economic growth, not

just its magnitude. Zurich is the first to appear on the list. The Swiss city stands out for its quality of life, work, housing, safety and education. The top 5 is completed by Vienna, Copenhagen, Luxembourg and Helsinki.

The reality is that this report does not speak very highly of large European cities. In fact, we have to go all the way down to 18th place to find Berlin as the first European representative in this group. Madrid (28th) or Paris (32nd) and others such as

London (33rd) are very far away.

Globally, the United States sees three cities in the top 20: Washington (11), Seattle (14) and Boston (16). A Canadian city also managed to sneak in: Ottawa, in 8th place.

In national terms, Bilbao is the first Spanish city in this prosperity ranking.

The Biscayan capital appears at number 20 in the world and achieves this rating thanks to the ability of administrations to achieve a society without inequality.

Writers' Ink Spot Welcome to a new weekly section, in the Costa Blanca People, Writers' Ink. Let me explain who we are, what we do and how we intend to contribute towards our favourite free newspaper and add to your enjoyment.

Over the years, many writing groups have been formed most starting out with good intentions concerning contributing articles and/or stories to a number of newspapers for the Englishspeaking community. It's quite a timeconsuming task for those who are in the process of trying to have their work published, so, unfortunately, most fell by the wayside.

Writers' Ink is a dedicated and rapidly expanding group of internationally published and non-published writers who take pleasure in helping and encouraging each other and members of our wider international circle.

Our backgrounds are very diverse, ranging from a retired high ranking Police Officer, retired Military Personnel, former Editor/Publisher of a newspaper, Ex-Secretary/retired Hotelier/Shopkeeper, retired Army/Teacher and a well known, published children's writer, to name but a few.

As you can imagine our meetings are full of lively debate. We meet on the

second Monday of each month at 11am in the 'Friendly' Bar, CC Citrus, La Florida, Costa Blanca South. We try to keep the meetings fairly light hearted but do follow an agenda and everyone is encouraged to add any items they wish to discuss at the meetings. We each pay 5 euros a month which goes towards our website design and management costs, competition prizes and Seasonal team lunches.

The in-house competitions are designed and judged by our own volunteers. Mostly murder/mystery, they are great fun and keep our brains engaged and active. But this is not to say that in the future we couldn't open it up to the general public.

And so we hope to keep you entertained with a selection of our stories and poems; some funny, some serious and some perhaps a little sad and thought provoking, but most of all to keep you and your family entertained.

Finally, we are more than happy to welcome new budding writers, experienced published Authors or anyone who has an interest in writing to our group. Our only stipulation is that you join us with an open mind and a sense of fun; all ages are welcome.

A NEW TWIST by JOY LENNICK Puzzled by my bizarre behaviour – inviting a vagrant into my bathroom (?!)

- I mused he could be a drug-addict or rapist. Was I completely bonkers? I hadn’t hit my head too, had I? Back-peddling…My father had just died (sadly estranged at his behest, I nevertheless attended his funeral two days previously) - I was seated in an adjacent park, lost in melancholic reflections. It was Spring - I should be waxing poetic, tra-la, but his passing weighed heavy. Both headstrong; he over-protective - couldn’t accept I was ‘grown-up! You should be an accountant, like me! I had other, more artistic, ideas. Stalemate! Unspoken words lay, heavy as an anvil, in my stomach.

Aware of a need to ring my mother, I rose from the bench in haste, lost my balance and awkwardly twisted my ankle. Despite the absence of a lamp - a young guy fortuitously appeared, leapt forward and caught me. (I glanced around looking for a camera…)

‘Thanks!’ I tried standing, before falling hard, again, on terra firma. Hovering, the guy thrust out a strong hand and pulled me up. I gave him a wan smile.

‘I promise you I’m not drunk! Just clumsy…’ He gave a shy grin.

‘No problem. Think you can walk?’ I tried, wobbled; let out a moan. Bloody Nora…

‘Live far?’ I pointed to a house opposite the park gates.

My unlikely knight swept me into his arms. Then was not a good time to worry about the faint odours of unwashed socks and stale beer… Reaching my front door, he put me gently down while I scrabbled in my bag for a key. He helped me inside. Shit! My foot throbbed like hell.

Surreal situation but ‘cruel to be kind’ stuff was necessary.

‘Can I speak frankly?’

‘Fire away,’ he looked sheepish.

‘We both need help, right?

After introductions: My name’s Daniel/mine’s Marisa, I pointed out the shower – and, painfully shuffling, gave him some clothes Joe had left. (Linda 38D cup the lure.) I hoped they’d fit: the clothes, not the bra… He demurred, then with a quiet ‘Thanks,’ took them. I awkwardly hopped, into the kitchen and made tea and a few ham sandwiches.

Seated, foot on a pouffe - Trust me I was a medic in Afghanistan -- from my unexpected guest/nurse, I offered Daniel the snack I’d made. Transformed from a scruffy vagrant into a regularlooking human being - eyes like large chocolate drops - I was intrigued.

‘Marisa! Nice name. This is weird!

Meeting you as I did. I’ve seen you before: your hair like a beacon… sitting on that park bench reading.’ I nodded and smiled.

Refreshments eaten, Daniel gently attended to my ankle. A silence followed. Hesitant, until I silently ‘wound’ him up with a hand gesture, he slowly told me how he had served in Afghanistan and suffered from Post Traumatic Stress.

‘Being a guy, I tried hiding it. You know, mustn’t let the side down, all that stoicism stuff!’

I’d had a stint with The Samaritans, so silently nodded.

‘Sweet Jesus, hark at me…My best mate bought it in the most horrific way, in an explosion ten yards from me. I carried on until exhausted and was eventually hospitalized with stress. A brave soldier, eh?!’

‘You’re only human, Daniel. You weren’t a tin soldier for God’s sake…But I’m sure you’ve heard those words a few times.’ I noticed his pinched, pleasant face, relax.

‘After discharge, I returned home. Dad had remarried – my mother died years ago, and my step-ma didn’t take to me…

I found a bed-sit and a job but lost both through my erratic behaviour. The street seemed appealing in the Spring and Summer sunshine, but it was no joke when it rained. I almost lost the plot then and have been looking for a new one ever since…’

The surge of sympathy in me was so strong I could taste and feel it. I thought on, was it simply sympathy I asked myself… Joe hadn’t needed me, but if anyone needed anyone, it was the comparative stranger before me. I had two bedrooms after all…

Dad always said I was too head-strong – rich coming from him – ‘And too impetuous my girl; one day you’ll come a cropper!’ I could hear him saying. With moist eyes, I silently told him he was wrong, that I loved him and mentally laid him to rest.

I thought of Joe and his wandering eyes, and before him, Gavin who loved the demon drink to excess. Was I a bad judge of character or had I just been unlucky? I plumped for the latter. Somehow or other it felt different this time. Was it a case of third time lucky? Oh, I knew it was far too early to make forecasts of any kind; stupid even… BUT – that modest, three-lettered word with so much intent, set me on a hopeful path. I smiled and turned to Daniel: ‘Maybe it’s time that tattered old plot found a new twist? But, first, how about another cup of tea?’

Studio32 donation Studio32 Musical Theatre Company are pleased to announce that as a result of ticket sales from our 2019 winter show ‘Dracula Spectacula’, We have been able to purchase four de-choking devices to be used in local schools and nurseries.

The devices were presented by Philip Wilson (Chairman of Studio32) to David Vives Gil, Councillor for the Arts and Culture, San Fulgencio. (pictured) In addition to this Studio32 also donated monies to Cruz Roja in recognition of their help to families affected by the floods this autumn, Caritas, to assist them with their work with the homeless people in the area and San Fulgencio music school, to help buy instruments to encourage children to take up music.

These donations are only possible due to the people of this area buying tickets to our shows. We hope to continue in this vain in 2020 and we are now selling tickets for our next

On the 17th December the Branch held its Christmas Party for members and friends at the “The Tipsy Terrace” in Hondón de los Frailes. During the evening an auction was held which raised 200€ for the Poppy Appeal.

It was getting very close to Christmas Day and there was no room at the Inn but of course Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre had a stable ready and waiting as Mary and Joseph arrived bedraggled and exhausted.........what?!

It was the day before Christmas eve and everyone was getting excited and finalising their Christmas shopping and preparations but for Easy Horse Care Rescue Centre it was just another busy day with the usual routine of caring for the 120 horses, ponies and donkeys. Just to make matters worse one of the three workers was on holiday and another one had his day off! Hectic to say the least and then Rod also had to make a trip to the Alicante Horse Hospital too and Sue had already headed off to the Charity shop to work there as usual.

As if they didn’t have enough to do, you guessed it, the Police phoned to say there was a little pony and donkey

wandering around and looking desperately in need of help. So as soon as Rod returned from the Hospital off he headed to meet the Policia Local in Almoradi, where they escorted him to the location of the abandoned equines.

Being the time of year it was, they felt it fitting to call the little pony Mary and the white donkey Joseph. 12 year old Mary and 10 year old Joseph really were in quite a state of neglect and particularly Joseph whose feet were in a horrendous state, grossly overgrown and hardly able to walk. Safe at last in a clean dry stable with good food, they awaited the arrival of the vet Dorothea and the farrier Enrique.

Following essential hoof treatment by Enrique and a full check up by Dorothea, the first discovery made was that they both had microchips. The Police were very keen to have all the details as they intend to track down the owners and

make a ‘denuncia’ and no way want to hand them back to the owners having seen the state they were in.

Then the second surprise, Mary might be in foal! We kid you not, so now they are awaiting an ultrasound to confirm her condition. Keep tuned to find out if there will be a new arrival of a baby mule!

Although it puts EHC under even more pressure, it is cases like this that they need to continue to rescue. The Police were very grateful for the intervention of the Centre as without that they would not be able to pursue prosecutions. This is such a positive collaboration which EHC now have with many different Police Authorities and it is so encouraging to see such a forward thinking approach to animal welfare by all involved.

Neil Pavitt, the Branch Chairman revealed the Branch Poppy Appeal total for the year which was an amazing 4,462.54€.

This was greeted by much applause and Neil thanked everyone for their time and support over the year. He then presented the Poppy Organiser Roger Kingham with a Poppy Appeal 5 Year Certificate of Appreciation.

This rounded off the evening and another very successful year for the Branch.

Age Concern celebrates 3 Kings The Day Centre of Age Concern at La Siesta was packed with beneficiaries celebrating 3 Kings. Lots of jolly chatter and laughter rang out as everyone was pleased to catch up with friends after the Christmas break. The huge team of volunteers began the celebrations by serving the first course of a delicious buffet specially prepared by Cakes and Bakes from the Rioja Centre, Los Dolses.

Crackers pulled, buffet food enjoyed, tea swallowed everyone was then treated to the afternoon entertainment. This year we had the popular saxophonist and vocalist Kenny D who played and sung music from the golden era’s of the 40’s and 50’s including Besame Mucho, Misty, As time Goes By to name just a few. It was lovely to see some of our beneficiaries up and dancing to this fabulous music. After the second course of the buffet of tasty scones, chocolate muffins and mouth watering lemon drizzle cake the free

draw of a huge basket of food and alcohol (of course) took place. The very lucky winner Betty Hutchinson yelped with joy when her ticket was drawn. This beautiful prize was very kindly donated by the Age Concern Charity Shop in Torrevieja. This successful afternoon event was rounded up by another 30 minutes of music from Kenny D. Beneficiaries boarded the Charity’s vehicles for their lifts home in high spirits and looking forward to the next event.

Corden teases vintage TV return After the tidy response to the Gavin and Stacey Christmas special, which saw the return of the beloved BBC sitcom after almost a decade off our screens, its cocreator James Corden has hinted that it may now return for a full fourth series.

Oscar Hartland, who stars in the show as Neil “the baby” – the son of Smithy (Corden) and Nessa (co-creator Ruth Jones) – told presenters on Good Morning Britain that he asked Corden whether Gavin and Stacey could make a full series comeback, and Corden replied that it might happen if it’s “what the people want”.

Hartland said: “I did ask James in the process of filming. He said it’s just what the people want.” He continued: “Me, I would love it to happen. It really depends what other people think about it and whether they like it or not.”

The Christmas special was watched by 11.6 million people, making it the most popular Christmas Day TV show of the decade, and ended on a romantic

cliffhanger after Nessa confessed her love to Smithy.

Since Gavin and Stacey went off air in 2010, Corden has gained fame in the US, presenting The Late Late Show With James Corden and regularly going viral with the segment Carpool Karaoke. He is currently starring as Bustopher Jones in

the movie Cats, which has been widely ridiculed, the Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw describing it as a “purr-fectly dreadful hairball of woe”. The film’s shocking sexuality has also been nakedly mocked; one critic described it as being “two seconds away from turning into a furry orgy in a dumpster”.

Biggest home video of 2019 Avengers: Endgame was king at the box office in 2019, though it was Queen who ruled home video. The British Association for Screen Entertainment and the Official Charts Company unveiled some very interesting statistics about home video sales for last year, and it turns out that Thanos couldn't quite replicate his dominance on digital and Blu-ray.

Avengers: Endgame did rack up an impressive halfmillion digital copies sold in the UK alone, but that wasn't enough to top Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody.

When digital sales were bundled with DVD and Blu-ray sales, Bohemian Rhapsody ranked above Avengers: Endgame, Toy Story 4, Mary Poppins Returns and A Star is Born

in that order.

Even more impressively, the Oscarwinning Queen biopic also topped the Official Charts Company ranking over Avengers: Endgame, A Star is Born, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald and Mary Poppins Returns when only physical sales of Blu-ray and DVD were taken into account.

Marvel fans shouldn't feel defeated, though!

Avengers: Endgame maintains the staggering box office record as the highest-grossing movie ever made.

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers should probably watch their backs though, since James Cameron has already devised a strategy for previous record-holder Avatar to take back the crown.

BEEF STEW Ingredients 1 onion, chopped 2 celery sticks, finely chopped 2 tbsp rapeseed oil 3 carrots, halved and cut into chunks 2 bay leaves ½ pack thyme 2 tbsp tomato purée 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 beef stock cubes or stock pots 900g beef for braising such as skirt, buy a whole piece and cut it yourself for bigger chunks or buy ready-diced 2 tsp cornflour (optional) ½ small bunch parsley, chopped buttery mash, to serve (optional) Method 1.Fry the onion and celery in 1 tbsp oil over a low heat until they start to soften – about 5 mins. Add the carrots, bay and thyme, fry for 2 mins, stir in the purée and Worcestershire

SLOW COOKER SAUSAGE CASSEROLE

BEEF CURRY sauce, add 600ml boiling water, stir and tip everything into a slow cooker. Crumble over the stock cubes or add the stock pots and stir, then season with pepper (don’t add salt as the stock may be salty).

2.Clean out the frying pan and fry the beef in the remaining oil in batches until it is well browned, then tip each batch into the slow cooker. Cook on low for 8-10 hrs, or on high for 4 hrs.

3.If you want to thicken the gravy, mix the corn our with a splash of cold water to make a paste, then stir in 2 tbsp of the liquid from the slow cooker. Tip back into the slow cooker, stir and cook for a further 30 mins on high. Stir in the parsley and season again to taste. Serve with mash, if you like. Leave to cool before freezing.

2.Add all the spices and fry for 1 minute or until the spices start to smell fragrant. Add the coconut milk and bring to a simmer, then tip everything into the slow cooker.

3.Cook for 4 hours on high or 8 hours on low.

Stir in the coriander and serve.

Method 1.Fry the onion and celery in the oil over a low heat until it starts to soften and cook, about 5 mins, then spoon it into the slow cooker. Fry the carrots briefly and add them too.

2.Brown the sausages all over in the same frying pan – make sure they get a really good colour because they won’t get any browner in the slow cooker. Transfer to the slow cooker and add the sweet potato and tomatoes.

3.Put the purée in the frying pan and add 250ml boiling water, swirl everything around to pick up every last bit of flavour, and tip the lot into the slow cooker. Add the herbs, stock cube and some pepper. Don’t add salt until the casserole is cooked as the stock can be quite salty. Cook on high for 4 hrs or on low for 8 hrs, then serve or leave to cool and freeze.

Easy ways to eat healthier Preparing nutritious meals can sometimes seem like a rather tricky and time-consuming task, but it doesn’t have to be this way. These easy food prep and cooking hacks will take the hard work out of eating healthily.

Chunky potatoes The smaller the pieces of potato, the more surface area there is for water soluble nutrients like vitamin C and riboflavin (vitamin B2) to leach from when potatoes are boiled. Keep roast potatoes chunky too, as smaller pieces similarly have more total surface area to absorb fat through during cooking.

Marinade Using a marinade on grilled and barbecued meats helps tenderize and flavor it. But according to the American Institute for Cancer Research it’s also a good way to reduce the formation of cancer-causing substances that are created during the grilling process. Any combination of oil, acid (like lemon juice or balsamic vinegar) and herbs/spices will do the trick.

Ceramic knives Not only brilliant for chopping veg, a ceramic knife could have a nutritional advantage too. Unlike stainless steel, ceramic doesn’t contain iron and traces of copper that can speed up the browning rate when you cut into produce such as avocados and lettuce.

Known as enzymic browning, this oxidation reaction shows that valuable micronutrients – that have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties – are

being destroyed. So switch to a ceramic knife to slow down the discoloration.

Switch mince beef for lentils If your recipe requires 1lb (around 500g) of ground beef, try using ¾lb instead and substituting the final part with just over a ¼ cup of cooked lentils. You'll be switching some animal protein for healthier plant protein, having more fiber and reducing calories too.

Leave garlic before cooking To maximize the health benefits, you should allow garlic to sit for 10 to 15 minutes after prepping it. Chopping releases an enzyme that creates the formation of several sulphur compounds that might have beneficial effects on heart health and the immune system.

Cooking too soon deactivates the enzyme before it has had chance to work.

Deep greens When it comes to salad leaves, a rule of thumb is the greener the better – kale, spinach, rocket and romaine all have more vitamin A, vitamin C and foliate than butterhead and anaemic iceberg lettuce.

Dry January leads to more low­ Prosecco hangovers alcohol and booze­free beers are the worst It wasn’t exactly a surprise when President Emmanuel Macron decreed there would be no French version of Dry January, especially since he did so after lunch with Maxime Toubart, chairman of the champagne winegrowers’ association.

The prospect of a “Janvier Sec” would have been pretty sobering for anyone in the drinks industry across the Channel but Toubart surely would have pointed to the UK, where over four million people are estimated to have given up alcohol last January, resulting in a 1.9 per cent drop in like-for-like sales in the pubs and restaurants.

While the struggles of the British pub are well documented – and sometimes exaggerated – less thought is spared for the small, local breweries that supply them. Boom time for craft brewers is over, with their numbers growing by just eight last year compared to 395 in 2017. Intense competition means that growth is hard at

any time, but January is exceptionally tough, with demand at its lowest.

Most breweries get paid for their beer on 30-day terms, so there’s no guarantee their December profit will reach them when they need it most. This, coupled with Dry January and a steady 30-year decline in how much people drink, means breweries have to adapt to survive.

It’s not such a threat to bigger companies such as Heineken and Brewdog, but they have also announced deals on their low ABV and alcohol-free ranges – including a Brewdog bar opening in London’s Old Street area on Monday where all 15 of its taps will be devoted to alcohol-free varieties.

Manchester’s Cloudwater Brew Co, regularly cited as one of the best modern breweries in the world, has launched range of sodas made with hops and other citrus flavours. The idea is to balance its higher ABV beers while appealing to beer

geeks throughout the year. Its founder, Paul Jones, was teetotal for most of his twenties so understands the need to cater to people who aren’t drinking.

“Rather than baulk at people taking January off, why don’t we make efforts to accommodate them?” says Jones. “That was part of the inspiration behind our sodas – to access the flavour of hops without intoxicating yourself, and welcome people who are mindful of alcohol into beer spaces.”

A booming sector Of course, not everyone wants Cloudwater’s Green Tea & Simcoe Soda.

Beer’s combination of sweet malt and bitter, citrusy hops is unique, so there is a fast-growing market for low and noalcohol beer.

The British Beer & Pub Association says the category grew by 232 per cent between 2013 and 2018, and such products are now the mainstay of many established craft breweries. One of the most popular is Thornbridge Brewery’s Zero Five, a surprisingly hoppy pale ale with just 0.5 per cent alcohol.

While low and no-alcohol’s success has been championed by charities such as Alcohol Change UK, initiatives like Dry January are less helpful if moderate drinking isn’t observed throughout the year. Mindful of that, an industry trend of “session strength” beer has emerged, with beers below 2.8 per cent ABV now accounting for 3 per cent of sales. There are even breweries that specialise in them.

If you’re still recovering from drinking too much over the festive period, you’re not alone.

And there’s a chance that you found one hangover particularly brainthudding and mouth-drying, and it was the one after your night of drinking Prosecco, wasn’t it?

If so, you’ll be glad to hear that there is actually a scientific reason why Prosecco hangovers can be far worse.

According to Marco Castelanelli – founder of Club Vino and a level 3 AIS sommelier – those extra-painful heads are to do with the bubbles.

“If you find that you get the worst headache ever after a glass of two or Prosecco then quite simply blame it on the bubbles,” he said.

“Prosecco and Champagne both contain little pockets of carbon dioxide which change how the alcohol flows

through the blood stream, helping the body to adsorb the alcohol faster.

“Once in the bloodstream the Co2 competes with oxygen which is why you might feel a little woozy and rather drunk rather quickly leading to an exaggerated hangover in the form of a pounding head.”

So, what can we do to avoid a day spent guzzling Lucozade and telling yourself you’re never touching alcohol again? Is it simply a case of never drinking fizz from now on? Luckily, no.

Marco advises that we should be “drinking a glass of water with every glass of Prosecco to reduce dehydration.”

And if you forget to do that (whoops-adaisy…) be sure to “drink a large glass of water before bed.”

Pretty simple if you think about it.

Losing weight can reduce cancer risk, says study

Doctors who say weight loss can reduce the risk for breast cancer finally have some pretty solid science on their side: A study published Tuesday in the JNCI: Journal of the National Cancer Institute found that postmenopausal women may decrease their likelihood of getting breast cancer if they lose weight – even a small amount.

“Excess body weight is a known cause of postmenopausal breast cancer,” lead study author Lauren Teras, PhD, scientific director for epidemiology research at the American Cancer Society. “An important question is, can you reverse it? Believe it or not, this was not something we knew for certain. We had hoped it was true, but the scientific evidence was not there.”

Until now, that is. The researchers analysed data from 10 separate

prospective studies, involving 180,000 women over age 50 who were tracked for a decade. Nearly 7,000 of the women received a breast cancer diagnosis during that time, according to the data.

Compared to postmenopausal women who maintained a stable weight over approximately 10 years, the researchers found that women who lost weight - even as little as 4.5 pounds and then kept it off for another 5 years, had a 13 percent lower risk of developing breast cancer. And more weight lost led to an even greater impact on cancer risk - at 20 pounds of sustained weight loss, women cut their risk of breast cancer by about 25 percent. (The researchers accounted for other risk factors that can impact obesity and/or breast cancer risk, like physical activity levels and whether the women

were on hormone replacement therapy.)

“This is particularly important for the 40 percent of women worldwide, and more than two-thirds of women, who are overweight or obese and therefore at higher risk for breast cancer,” says Teras. “Given that breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, the question of whether weight loss can reduce breast cancer risk is of great public health importance.”

Although the study was restricted to women aged 50 years and older, Teras stresses that it is important for women of all ages to maintain a healthy body weight to avoid a variety of negative health outcomes. Another important lesson from this study is that the results suggest that if you do gain weight, it is not too late to lower your risk of breast cancer by losing weight - in women who lost 20 or more pounds, and gained some (but not all) back, their breast cancer risk was still lower than if they hadn't lost any weight at all.

While it should be noted that this study only showed an association between breast cancer risk and weight loss, not a cause-and-effect relationship, it's still an important finding in the realm of breast cancer diagnoses - especially since breast cancer is still second deadliest cancer in women in the US, after skin cancer. It is estimated that the average woman's risk for developing breast cancer is about 13 percent.

As well as reaching and maintaining a healthy weight, the Cancer experts recommend regular exercise (at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity or 75

minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week) and limiting or avoiding alcohol to reduce your risk for breast cancer.

Changes Expected in 2020 As we enter a new year, we will enter a new phase in traffic law changes, and a new strategy with the aim of reducing road fatalities on the ‘road to zero’.

The DGT is already working, on behalf of the Ministry of Interior, on the new Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030 which aims to half the number of deaths and serious injuries. Sadly, as advice often goes unheeded, legislation is needed to force drivers to comply with safer practices.

Points System Since it was introduced, the points system has been credited with being responsible for saving countless lives, but it is now due an update. The main developments will involve harsher penalties for mobile phone use.

Driver Training The general rules for drivers will see updates in the training regime. Primarily, there will be a mandatory 8 hours of theoretical classes of hazard awareness and sensitisation in road safety, focusing on values, principles, attitudes and safe behaviours behind the wheel, since attitudes in bad practices are self-evident.

Speed The maximum permitted speed limit in towns and cities will be reduced on the majority of roads. There will be a maximum limit of 30 kilometres per hour on single-lane roads, with the aim of protecting the vulnerable (included in the Royal Decree on urban traffic measures).

Personal Mobility Vehicles The legislation controlling personal mobility vehicles, such as electric scooters, is going through the final stages.

Guidelines have already been introduced

to control these vehicles, but the legislation will make it easier for everyone to understand the restrictions based on speed and power and were they can and cannot be used.

Warning Triangles The first strategy will be created which will pave the way for the replacement of warning triangles in January 2024. This plan will be for vehicles to carry additional warning lights which can be used in an emergency, rather than the triangles.

These lights can be used now in conjunction with the hazard lights and triangles, but the legislation will see them ultimately replacing warning triangles.

It is worth noting that these plans will all have to go through the consultation phase before implementation, and so there may be changes once they are at the final stages, but of course we will keep you updated as they are implemented.

Motorcycles Motorcyclists will also see changes to their training courses, not only for those starting out on two wheels, but also for riders who are already qualified. Some courses will be aimed at riders who have committed infractions, but others will enable bikers to obtain bonus penalty

Alcohol and Drugs message still not getting through In the last pre-Christmas campaign focussing on alcohol and drug use behind the wheel, more than 400 drivers every day were detected over the prescribed limit.

With respect to the alcohol detection tests, during the seven days there were 16,801 tests carried out in which 1,606 drivers tested positive. Of these, 1,359 were detected in preventive controls, 104 after having committed an infraction, another 136 for being involved in an incident and 7 more for presenting obvious symptoms of alcohol.

Of the 1,606 drivers who tested positive, 242 have been instructed to proceed to the judicial authority for exceeding the rate of 0.60 mg / l in exhaled air. In addition, court action is being taken against 6 people who

refused the breathalyser test.

Regarding drugs, of the 4,466 drug tests that were conducted, 1,348 were positive in the initial tests, of them, 1,149 detected in preventive controls, 129 after having committed an infraction and 70 for being involved in an incident.

Of the 1,348 drivers who tested positive for drugs, 8 of them were instructed for subsequent transfer to the judicial authority, 7 for driving under the influence of toxic drugs, narcotics or psychotropic substances and 1 for refusing to perform such tests.

As usual, among the most used drugs are cannabis (978 cases), cocaine (407 cases) and amphetamines (222 cases).

Salivary tests for the detection of the presence of drugs in drivers are increasing with the idea of becoming a common occurrence like those made for

the detection of alcohol.

According to the Prosecutor's Office of Road Safety in its annual report, in 2018 56,173 sentences were issued for driving with excess alcohol (rate higher than 0.60mg / l in air or 1.2 gr / l in blood) or under the influence of drugs As is usual in the campaigns carried out by the DGT, the collaboration of local and regional police has been very important, since alcohol and drug controls have been carried out both in interurban and urban roads. The data from the police is still being processed and must be added to the figures reported once complete.

Although the campaign is over, The Guardia Civil will continue to conduct alcohol and drug checks on drivers at any time of day and on any road with the goal of deterring them from driving.

New 2020 Ford Ranger Raptor V8 Ford is secretly readying a highperformance Ranger super pick-up complete with V8 power. The plan has been uncovered by Car Magaine’s sister publication Wheels magazine in Australia.

The brand that sells more 4x4 utes than any other is gearing up to shift the goalposts of load-lugging performance by replacing the four-cylinder diesel engine fitted to the Ranger Raptor with a Mustang-spec 5.0-litre V8.

Rather than a global project, the topsecret V8 Raptor project has been sanctioned by Ford Australia and will be the result of a local engineering effort. But instead of utilising the 1000-strong local workforce that helped create the T6 architecture that underpins the Ranger and Everest, the project is being farmed out to an external engineering firm.

The latest in a growing list of lowvolume local engineering solutions – which include the upcoming Mustang RSpec created by Herrod Performance and just-released Nissan Navara Warrior by Premcar – will adhere to OEM durability and safety requirements and be sold through Ford dealers will full five-year warranty protection.

How they're adding the Mustang V8 to the Ford Ranger Raptor: behind the

scenes, there’s an elaborate process to turn regular Raptors into roaring V8 performance machines.

The donor Raptors will arrive in Australia with diesel propulsion but will undergo an engine transplant as part of an extensive performance upgrade.

Key to the transformation of the Raptor V8 is Ford’s Coyote V8, the engine that is the heart of the Mustang GT. The 5038cc direct injection dual overhead cam V8

was upgraded in 2018 to produce 454bhp and 410lb ft – more than the final 6.2-litre V8 in the Holden Commodore SS (407bhp). While exact outputs for the Raptor tune are yet to be confirmed, it is expected to make close to the numbers pumped out in the current Mustang GT. Crucially, the new V8 injection promises to answer one of the biggest criticisms with Ford’s Baja racer-inspired truck: straight line performance.

So, we are nearly a week into a new decade and has anything actually changed in football? Er, no.

Liverpool are still racing to their firstever (I just like saying that) Premier League title following a pretty-muchhassle-free win over Sheffield United.

Chris Wilder’s men have led the way with attacking centre-backs so we can only assume Virgil van Dijk had been taking notes when he legged it into their area to set up Mo Salah after just four minutes.

Mikel Arteta is taking to management almost as easily as his counterpart Ole Gunnar Solskjaer seemed to be doing this time last year.

Arsenal swept past Man United 2-0, Solskjaer’s men being the equivalent of your nan behaving themselves over Christmas before getting a little bit drunk and letting herself down on New Year’s Eve. Arsenal were OK, no better than that. United were shocking and given their 0-0 draw with Wolves in the FA Cup are still waiting to score a goal in this decade.

Carlo Ancelotti has picked up where Big Dunc left off. Not with results, as such - more to do with the 442 and launching it to the big man at every opportunity. Unfortunately for Carlo, it didn’t work at the Etihad as Gabby Jesus got a brace. Claudio Bravo let in four goals from four shots last time he faced the Toffees and, to be frank, he didn’t look much better this time out.

Alireza Jahanbakhsh hasn’t had a bad festive period. He finally scored his first goal in English football and then followed that up with a halfdecent overhead quick to equalise for Brighton against Chelsea. But, let’s calm down a bit. It wasn’t the best goal of the day, let alone this ‘goal of the season’ chat that immediately ensued. Chelsea are in the midst of a Premier League slump, which is natural given that most of their team will have been super-excited about Christmas, what Santa might bring them and were probably allowed to stay up after midnight for the first time on New Year’s Eve. David Moyes is ‘home’ which is a curious turn-of phrase seeing he was kicked out of his ‘home’ after a mere six months last time out. That said, West Ham finally recalled how to play a bit of football in battering Bournemouth 4-0 in Moyes’ first game back at the helm. I’m sure I have said this before, but other than getting West Ham themselves, is there a more friendly first game that a manager can be rewarded with other than Bournemouth? We’re going to learn a lot about Eddie Howe as they enter a proper relegation battle - though a 40 over Luton in the FA Cup saw Dominic Solanke finally score, so if he can start doing that in the league he might actually help matters.

Leicester keep chipping away at being the second-best team in the Premier League, battering a Newcastle side that used all three subs at half-time and then saw Fabian Scharr go down injured within moments of the restart - that’s 8-0 on aggregate to the Foxes over the Magpies this season.

Danny Ings has been scoring a few goals this season without much reward in terms of a big W by his name at the final whistle. Fortunately, Tottenham are still rubbish at defending and not that effective in attack at the moment especially after Harry Kane limped off and is out for three months in the classic ‘important England player gets injured before major tournament’ cliffhanger - so Ings scoring yet again was enough for the Saints to beat Jose Mourinho.

Jose’s been keeping his cool since his return, but I think we can all agree that mask slipped after he stuck his head round the corner to see what was occurring in the Southampton dugout.

Everton haven’t beaten Liverpool at Anfield in over ten years and now they haven’t beaten the U21s there this decade. If Theo Walcott could work on his final ball he might develop into a player as good as Curtis Jones.

Australian bushfires jeopardise tennis open Less than a fortnight before the start of the Australian Open, Melbourne lies under a thickening blanket of bushfire haze, and air quality has been downgraded to “very poor” and “hazardous”, which constitutes a serious health threat. There is a chance the tournament will be delayed, although conditions are expected to ease before the start on 20 January.

Smoke from the bushfires mixed with existing air pollution to push Canberra’s air quality index up to 568 on Friday – higher even than some of Asia’s worst known pollution black spots.

Seven-time champion and Australian Open favourite Novak Djokovic – who suffered respiratory problems early in his career – said at the weekend in his capacity as president of the ATP players’ council that air pollution at the Melbourne site would have to be closely monitored, and did not rule out discussing a delay to the tournament if players’ health was going to be compromised.

The State’s Environmental Protection Agency chief environmental scientist, Dr Andrea Hinwood, said: “We’re not expecting [air classification of very poor to hazardous] to change until Wednesday. We might see some light relief tomorrow, but we might not.” She said overnight rain had, “done almost nothing” to alleviate conditions.

“Drenching rain would be terrific because it would knock it out.

However, Craig Tiley, the chief executive officer of Tennis Australia, is optimistic the tournament will go ahead, but said air quality will be closely monitored.

“We have committed substantial extra resources to analysis, monitoring and logistics to ensure the health and safety of all players, staff and fans throughout the summer and have no other plans to move events [having cancelled a Challenger in Canberra],” Tiley said.

“Assessing the likelihood of smokeinduced interruptions is a bit like how we treat heat and rain. We have experts who analyse all available live data as specific to our sites as possible and consult regularly with tournament officials and, in the case of heat and smoke, medical experts.

“We have access to real-time monitoring of air quality at all of our venues and are working closely with medical personnel and local experts onsite to ensure we have the best possible information available to make any decisions regarding whether play should be halted at any point.

“The health of players, fans and staff is a priority at all times and we will continue to make these decisions with that in mind. The smoke has proven intermittently problematic in some areas.

Elche CF waited until Added Time

SMGS at Roda The first SMGS gathering of 2020 saw turnout fall shy of a full house by just one player, with 39 members and 8 guests making their way to the not often visited Roda. Put back from a normal Wednesday due to New Year’s Day being on that day of the week, surprisingly few hangovers from festive celebrations were mentioned in the clubhouse.

Are we all becoming far more sensible and responsible, or were all the party boys and girls still out on the town!!? Or abroad?

The course was in excellent condition, especially the greens which were consistent throughout and rolling excellently. On a day with hardly a breeze, although overcast skies, good scoring could have been expected.

However, Roda is not the easiest track, particularly some of the early holes, and with pin placements often close to the front or at the very back, and always behind a bunker, unless the Scotty Philips technique of usually approaching the green from an adjacent fairway prevails, then some nice high soft landings were needed. Clearly a lot of members don’t have that particular skill!!

Hugh Reilly was the only one to better his handicap with the day’s best score of 37 points. Only 10 players managed to get more than 29 points. Tony Smale may well have produced the shot of the day with his nearest the pin effort on the 13th. Spectacular!!

Elche CF v Huesca, Saturday 4th January, kick off 20:00, attendance 8914 Many hopeful fans were at the Martinez Valero, all imagining their Christmas and New Years wish of Elche CF making the play off positions coming true.

Following a minutes silence for the death of Pacheta’s (the managers) mother during the festive period, the game began. Huesca were wearing their kit which closely mimics that of Barcelona, so had a psychological advantage, but Elche were not perturbed. Both the visitors and the home team started strongly, with accurate confident passing and tackling.

Elche CF were the better side according to the stats, but they were unable to finish their attacking moves or find the net. There were a couple of tense moments when the Huesca players looked like scoring, but much to the delight of the home fans they did not.

After the half time break, Huesca became the dominant side, displaying the fitness advantage gain by playing at an altitude of almost 500 meters at their home stadium. Out of no where, in the 55th minute the visitors scored. Ex Athletic Bilbao player Mikel Rico’s La Liga

From 25 meters he sneaked a shot through the ball sized space between the right post and Edgars #13 gloves. This changed the game and Elche CF had to react. Pacheta made 3 substitutions within 15 minutes to bolster the team.

Elche kept pressing but were again denied goals by being unable to finish the attacking moves.

In the second minute of added time, the ball found the feet of 23 year old Pere Milla #11 who was located right in front of the goal. Unusually for an Elche player, he volleyed it. The ball went just net side of the right post to even the score.

A point won, which was the difference in a 10th and 7th place table finish, keeping the possibility of the Christmas and New Years wishes of the fans coming true in the coming games.
