Anti-drug operation nets four tonnes of cocaine

RITONS were among those arrested after 13 million euros in cash, 18 cars and 3.7 tonnes of coke were seized in huge anti-drug operation across Spain. The Guardia Civil arrested 40 suspects in an anti-drug and money laundering operation covering Girona, Pontevedra, Madrid, Melilla, Malaga and Morocco. Footage released shows cops raiding properties and uncovering 18 cars and 1.3 tonnes of cocaine resulting in Spanish and Moroccan police netting close to four tonnes of cocaine with a street value of over 100 million euros in a long-term antitrafficking operation, Spain's interior ministry said last Friday. Morocco's DGST domestic intelligence service meanwhile said it had seized 2.6 tonnes of cocaine in the joint operation, which had input from US, Italian and German law enforcement agencies. Madrid said the operation had

"dismantled a major criminal organisation based in Spain and Morocco, directed from Venezuela by a wanted Spanish national". In all, 34 men and six women of Spanish, British and Moroccan nationalities were arrested as part of the operation. One Spanish national was detained in Germany "while trying to flee to Venezuela", the ministry said. It added that the amount of cocaine seized could have been sold in Spain for “more than 103 million euros”. A motorhome and three boats used for the transfer of the drugs were also seized. The gang was able to move money by using people with limited financial resources and making them hide money among their belongings while travelling. The investigation managed to intercept more than €4 million euros on flights departing from Malaga or Melilla to Venezuela, but how much they really got through is likely far higher. Spain is a main entry point for cocaine

in Europe, and the busts are some of the biggest in recent years. In May, Spanish authorities said they had intercepted a boat carrying 2.4 tonnes of cocaine in the Atlantic. And three tonnes of the drug were seized in December 2015 in the northern region of Galicia and Spain's Mediterranean Costa del Sol.

TORREVIEJA Meanwhile, in Torrevieja, Guardia Civil made their sixth significant drugs bust of the year. The gang involved were responsible for distributing heroin and cocaine throughout Torrevieja and surrounding areas. Six arrests were made. Sources say the gang had a complex hierarchy structure and changed location of their ‘HQ’ regularly to avoid detection by police. During the recent raid, dozens of ‘street ready’ doses of heroin and cocaine were seized. The initial investigation began some

months back when Guardia Civil in Torrevieja learned of one of the addresses being used to distribute by the gang. Following surveillance, officers were able to confirm that heroin and cocaine were being sold from the house in Torrevieja. Towards the end of the investigation, the gang abandoned the house and moved their drugs business to an address in the centre of Torrevieja town in order to hinder police efforts. Officers tracked down the new address and confirmed the gang members were still active and the hierarchy of roles still intact within the organisation. A raid was sanctioned and officers made six arrests, seized €1600 worth of cocaine and heroin, €1300 in cash and numerous items used in the cutting and distribution of narcotics. All of those arrested were Spanish – three men aged, 45, 32 and 38, one woman aged 39 and two women aged 29. The six were brought before the judge who ordered provisional

detention of all suspects due to the large number of prior convictions for a variety of crimes including violence and kidnapping. This was the sixth significant drugs bust in Torrevieja so far this year with a total of 23 people arrested across a series of different operations. 15 of those arrested are now in prison.

BITE SIZE 15th Tapas Route NEWS: The San Luis/ la Siesta Neighbourhood Watch group would like to remind local people that their next meeting will be on 27th November at Casa Ventura from 4.30pm until 5.30pm. The group has recently elected their new president and Doug Allen is keen to make sure that as many people come along to this last meeting before Christmas as possible. The group meet to find out more about local issues and often have a member of the local town council or their representative there to answer questions and hear views. A main purpose of the group is to help the local community to be a safer and better place to live. Old and new members are welcome on the 27th to meet the new president, share a glass of wine and mince pie. What’s most important is that people bring along their ideas, suggestions and comments.

Neighbourhood watch

It has become a recognised and regular event. The Torrevieja tapas route is looked forward to by many people and had been copied in many other towns too. Now Councillor Fanny Serrano has presented the 15th Ruta de la Tapa which will take place on the 23rd November to the 3rd December from Thursday to Sunday over the two week period. Altogether 45 different establishments will be taking part and they will offer altogether 180 different tapas dishes. The dishes that customers will be able to choose from were available for trialling at the CdT building in Torrevieja. There were examples of the traditional mixed with the popular, such as mini hamburgers and kebabs, some of these transformed into gourmet versions. There will be many tapas available, flavoured with different sauces along with seafood including grilled octopus and alioli. The price of the tapas is €2 for the

Clean up and speak up! It’s a new idea to help people improve their Spanish and English and to clean up the countryside too. On Sunday 26th November English and Spanish speaking people are invited to come along to La Mata Park at 10.30am for what’s being called an intercambio/ cleaning day. English and Spanish-speaking volunteers will set out from the Park’s Information Centre to tackle a selected area that needs a tidy. Together they will engage with the dual tasks of picking up some litter

and chatting in each other’s first language. It’s a simple idea but one that brings different nationalities together for a good cause. prevention. On Saturday 25th November there will be a protest in La Mata’s Puchol square that will continue to the Plaza de la Hermita at 6pm and the Paseo de Vista Alegre at 6.30pm. Participants have been asked to come along with placards to show their rejection of this kind of violence. At the end of the day a manifesto will be read and information will be given about the prevention of child abuse.

Christmas tree competition There will be a competition for young people over the age of 16 to paint 12 wooden trees in the shape of a pyramid that will be located around the town. The young people can participate either as individuals or in a group up to a maximum of three. They can claim the cost of materials of up to €70 and the trees must be painted between the 15th and 17th December. The materials used must also be weather resistant. The window for presenting the designs is between the 27th and 30th November in el Negociado de Registro in Calle Bazán, 6. Only the first 12 entries will be accepted. The first prize is €600, the second €400 and third €150.

Cannabis seized The GRO branch of the Local Police in Torrevieja seized a quantity of cannabis following inspection of a premises run by a cannabis association. Four people were subsequently detained and money was also confiscated. The association had been denounced by neighbours who complained about the constant comings and goings at the premises and the smell that came from it. The GRO are currently running a campaign to challenge the presence of illegal substances in public places and so far have intervened in 42 cases of consumption and one person has been detained on the charge of drug trafficking. It is believed that consumption of cannabis amongst young people in public places has increased.

Port car park closed The port car park used by many people visiting Torrevieja is currently closed following irregularities with the contract for its use. 12, pregnant by boy of same age A pregnant 12-year-old girl has been admitted to Murcia's Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital in one of the youngest cases ever known in Spain. In accordance with usual procedures, medical staff have been in contact with social services and the family has been interviewed to find out whether the mother-to-be is a victim of child abuse. However, all circumstantial evidence so far seems to indicate that the girl had consenting sexual relations with a boy of her own age. Neither the girl nor the 12-year-old father can be named for legal reasons, but both are said to have been born in the Region of Murcia to parents from an undisclosed South American country. In some nations in Latin America – notably in Ecuador – it would not be illegal

for the pair to have a child together, or even marry, but in Spain, the legal minimum age of sexual consent has recently been increased from 13 to 16 and a couple cannot marry before the age of 16. Either way, even if the pregnant schoolgirl had not consented to having sex, the father would not be made to face charges, since the under-14s are not considered criminally liable under Spanish law. Being pregnant at the age of 12 carries a very high risk to the health and life of mother and baby, meaning the child will be closely monitored by the hospital for her own safety. In a situation like hers, she would immediately be eligible for an abortion if she wished, but as she is under 16, would need her parents' or guardians' written consent.

Parent association challenges language priorities As the conflict between Catalonia and Madrid continues so there are other examples of regional muscle-flexing. Valenciano is the language owned by the Valencian people and sets them aside from the rest of Spain. Regional languages were banned under Franco and this continues to have reverberations even now. In a bid to reinstate the importance of their local language the Valencian government has encouraged schools to teach more valenciano either directly or through the medium of other subjects. In some cases this means that 25% of the timetable is delivered in what many consider to be a minority language that has little relevance to the modern world. The decisions from the regional government have been challenged by parents across the region, particularly Torrevieja where the importance of English is recognised perhaps even more and where for many children valenciano will be a third or even fourth language. The Torrevieja branch of AMPA – the parent teacher association – is standing

up against the current proposals and warns that the intention to increase the profile of valenciano is not restricted to schools. Use of the language can be expected to be increased in other departments too. Schools across the region were given the opportunity to vote on how much valenciano should be taught in their individual establishment. However, the teaching of this subject was also linked to the amount of English that could be taught too. However, there are difficulties delivering English classes because of insufficient English teachers. AMPA are now concerned that where there are insufficient teachers of English, valenciano will be taught instead. A previous agreement stated that students of castellano (Spanish) speaking areas would not have other subjects examined in valenciano. AMPA want to know how this commitment will be honoured if 25% of the timetable is taught in the language. Suzanne O’Connell

Brexit deal It has been announced that the UK parliament will get to vote on the final Brexit deal before the country leaves the EU, minister David Davis (right) has told MPs. Durig the announcement he said that the terms of the divorce, including any transition deal and agreement on citizen rights, would have to become law via new legislation. He also said that MPs would have the opportunity to reject or amend such legislation, saying ‘the agree-

ment will only hold if Parliament approves it’. The concession comes as MPs prepare to debate key Brexit legislation. He did add that the UK will leave the EU in 2019 whether MPs support the Brexit deal or not, putting paid to any doubt over the question.

Innovation and tourism hand in hand in Torrevieja Torrevieja will be holding a ‘Hackathon’ for the first time on the weekend of the 25th and 26th November. The event will be held in the Virgen del Carmen Cultural centre. The idea is that there is a 36 hour marathon shift during which teams are challenged to create applications and other tools that can be used to develop the tourist industry.

Most of the participants will be students from the university who can produce technological products that can offer creative solutions to tourist problems. ‘We want to contribute to the improvement of tourism management and we are very excited by this,’ explained Councillor Serrano. The University of Alicante has organised these kinds of events before during which those taking part spend 48 hours developing products that use

The port car park is one of the most popular places to park with capacity of up to 1,000 places and being one of the few open air car parks. It is convenient for town facilities as well as the paseo at the front due to its position. The business that has operated the car park has been doing so for more than 30 years. Now, signs have been placed indicating that the car park is out of action. However, the barriers are up and, at the moment, parking there is free. Illegal immigrant camp Officers from the Guardia Civil have dismantled an illegal encampment of immigrants in Redován, near Orihuela. The camp saw more than 30 people sleeping in cardboard boxes in a field for at least a week, according to police sources. During the operation seven people who had previously been ordered to leave the country were arrested. Since they set up the camp the Red Cross has been offering water, food and basic products to these people who appeared to have no resources.

Living dead invade Bigastro

Animal shelter open day Councillor Carmen Morate is keen to make sure that as many of the dogs and cats at the animal shelter in Torrevieja are found good homes as soon as possible. Conditions, in spite of best efforts, are not ideal and the longer animals are kept in the shelter the more difficult it is for them to adjust. There will be another opportunity to

see the animals outside of their cages on 2nd December 2017. It’s the third opportunity of this kind and between 11am and 1pm you can find out more about adopting an animal, see the animals themselves and there will be vegan food to eat too. There will be a children’s workshop if you would like to bring your child and a jumble sale to

raise money for the animals in the shelter. The event is organised by the town hall department of animal protection in collaboration with the association of Torrevieja animalistas. Suzanne O’Connell

Christmas Appeal from HELP Vega Baja HELP Vega Baja have now launched their Christmas Appeal. They are asking for people to join with them to make Christmas a little better for those who do not have the resources to buy fresh food or any ‘treats’. They are asking that that those who are happy to join in, make contributions towards filling a charity shopping trolley with food to be distributed ready for the holiday season. They are also looking to collect gifts for the elderly who may be alone over the Christmas period. ‘We will be working closely with social services and we are aware that many families will struggle at this time of the year,’ explains Michele Masson, President of HELP Vega Baja. ‘With the support of the community we would like to do something to show that they are not forgotten. If everyone, for example, bought just one item for the trolley it could make such a huge difference and a small gift included on your list for an elderly person would help them see that people are thinking of them.’ The appeal

More than Antibiotic abuse 'kills more 250 migrants Spaniards than car crashes' rescued off Spain More than 250 migrants making the dangerous crossing to Europe were rescued on Friday off Spain, with several other vessels still in need of rescue, authorities said. Spain is the third busiest gateway for migrants arriving in Europe, but far behind Italy and Greece. However, the number of people arriving by sea in Spain has nearly tripled over last year to 17,687. Many Africans undertaking the long route to Europe are choosing to avoid crossing danger-ridden Libya to get to Italy along the so-called central Mediterranean route, and choosing instead to get there via Morocco and Spain. The number rescued on Friday off Spain stood at 266, who had been aboard 24 makeshift vessels, said a spokeswoman for the rescuers. Some 15 other boats in need of help were still being sought. Authorities took the migrants to ports at Cartagena, Malaga and Torrevieja, which are all along Spain's eastern Mediterranean coast. According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) 158,935 people have made the dangerous crossing to Europe this year and another 2,982 died or went missing while trying.

Taking antibiotics without prescription causes more deaths per year in Spain than car crashes, according to the European Medications Agency. Residents in Spain consume some of the largest amounts of antibiotics on the continent – some 16 percent above the European average. Of the 25,000 people who die in Europe every year through antibiotic abuse, one in 10 – or a total of 2,500 – are in Spain. That's more than the number of fatalities seen annually on Spain's roads, according to motoring accident figures compiled by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT).

Overuse of antibiotics causes bacteria to become resistant to treatment and to multiply out of control, or to mutate into much stronger bugs that current medication has not yet become developed enough to kill off. And a very high number of residents in Spain who take antibiotics do so by buying them over the counter without prescription. In recent years, Spain has been clamping down on pharmacies selling antibiotics without a doctor's recommendation, and also urging GPs to avoid prescribing them unless absolutely necessary.

Alicante to Czech Republic Ryanair has announced a new route from Alicante to Pardubice in the Czech Republic, which will start operating in March with two weekly flights, as part of its summer 2018 calendar. Passengers booking on the route in Alicante will also be able to enjoy even cheaper rates which includes: a reduced baggage fee of 25 euros for a 20kg suitcase, connecting flights in Milan, Rome and Porto. Children join with veterans to remember the fallen As the custodians of Remembrance, The Royal British Legion called on the nation once again to unite in honouring the memory of the fallen, by commemorating the contribution made by British and Commonwealth military and civilian servicemen and women in the two World Wars and later conflicts. As is usual here in Spain, the occasion was also used to pay homage to the many Spanish servicemen and civilians who have died or been injured either in military service or in terrorist attacks, particularly those that have occurred this year in Barcelona, Cambrils, Manchester, London and elsewhere across the Iberian Peninsula. In the Vega Baja services got underway on Friday at the Phoenix International School in San Miguel where children, staff and parents joined with members of the Orihuela Costa RBL to pay their respects to the fallen. Accompanied by the Phoenix Band the children sang a selection of hymns and songs from the period, before extracts were read from the actual diary of Mathew Hadley, a soldier with the 38th (Welsh) Division at Mametz Woods during the First Battle of the Somme. Mathew is the Great, Great, Great Grandfather of 7-year old Harry Griffin, a pupil at the school. The extracts recalled the battle on 10 July 1916, listing many names of the 400 soldiers that were killed or injured, including his brother Reg, before they reached the wood. Sunday morning’s focus of Remembrance was on the Capilla de las Mil Palmeras where the Orihuela Costa Branch held their annual service led by Pastor Keith Brown. The guests included the British Vice Consul Sara Munsterhjelm and the Chairman of the RBL Spain District North, Don Cubbon. They were joined by the mayor of Pilar de la Horadada, Ignacio Ramos, and councillors along with President of the Partdo Popular in the Province of Alicante, Damaso Aparicio

and Orihuela Costa councillor for Overseas Residents Sofia Alvarez. There was a moving A capella performance of ‘Bring him home’ faultlessly sung by long time RBL supporter Rebecca Holt. The last post was performed by the Costa Blanca’s premier bugler Ian Gibson while the lament, ‘Lock Rannoch’, was played by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. The one major addition from last year was the

force and Royal Marines Associations were laid, after which branch and members of the public added their own poppy crosses in memory of family members and lost friends. Flanked by a large number of the general public the Pipes and Drums led over a hundred and fifty members of the congregation from the church to the Mil Palmeras Olympia Restaurant where members and guests enjoyed a delightful buffet lunch. Increase in rescues by the fire brigade Statistics show that the fire brigade has registered an increase in interventions in 2017 where people have had to be rescued from their own homes. The problem is one that is seen to affect foreigners in particular who live in regions such as Marina Baixa, Marina Alta and Torrevieja. The number of foreign residents of an advanced age who live in these areas is seen as the main reason for this interesting statistic. The elderly suffer from a fall or other accident and cannot raise the alarm in order that they are rescued. They must wait and hope that someone becomes aware of their predicament. Now, the public services in these areas are asking people to be vigilant and to take note if people who they usually see every day, appear to be absent. Where this is the case then they should call 112 and the fire service is likely to be called as they are the ones who can force entry into a property if it is suspected that someone may be injured inside. It’s been noted that there has been an increase in the number of these kind of cases recently. In the past ten months of 2017 the numbers of reported accidents and rescues such as this has already reached that of the whole of the previous year. The process of rescuing people trapped inside varies according to the exact nature of the incident and the premises themselves. The fire brigade’s ladder is the most often used piece of equipment in order to help them enter through a window. In situations where they can access the building by the door a locksmith is sometimes called out to help. In Torrevieja there were 130 rescues of this kind in the year so far. Benidorm is another area that registers high, followed by Elche and then Dénia

and Alcoy. The profile of the person needing help is usually that of someone between the ages of 70 and 90 years who lives alone. The majority are foreigners who live in Spain and they are usually women. Neighbours are asked to remain vigilant for changes in habit and to be persistent if they don’t receive an answer when trying to contact a

missing neighbour. Unfortunately there have been occasions where enquiries have not gone far enough and the person has only been discovered when the body begins to decompose. Occasionally the fire brigade has been called out to rescue children who have been accidentally locked in by parents and also where children have locked themselves in the bathroom. WEEKLY EURO UPDATE It has been a mixed week for the pound; sterling hit a four-week low against the euro as data showed that wage growth was lagging behind inflation, which held steady at 3% but recovered towards the end of the week. However, these data have dampened any hopes that a further interest rate rise from the Bank of England is on the horizon. It seems that the market has its eyes on Brexit and in this instance, no news is not good news at all. The pound is currently holding its ground, but much relies on the December round of exit talks with the EU. Positive retail sales in the UK and snippets of good news on the Brexit front this week appear to be contributing to a sense of optimism, however and Mario Draghi’s speech later today may be also be causing slight jitters for the Euro. Despite a muted finish, the euro had a strong week against the pound and the US dollar, and strengthened by an average of 0.8% against a dozen actively traded currencies midweek. The success was partly due to the technical picture. The euro broke through the support/resistance level at around $1.1670 that had held since July. It then went on to crack the downtrend that had constrained it in September and October. The second factor in the euro's favour was a decent set of Euroland ecostats. Third quarter growth was steady at 0.6% and ZEW's survey of investor sentiment jumped four points to 30.9. The US dollar has had a difficult week, reflecting the fortunes of its beleaguered President. The drop in the greenback was triggered by reports late this week that special counsel Robert Mueller served President Trump’s election campaign a subpoena in mid-October, requesting documents relating to Russia. Any gains made on the back of a bill which passed in the House of Representatives aimed at cutting US company rates from 35% to 20% evaporated amidst the news. In the run up to Thanksgiving on 23rd November, the dollar may be

seeking some positive news ahead of the Fed’s rate decision on 13th December to balance this out and regain some of its losses. Meanwhile in Canada, the dollar also weakened against its neighbour due to a fall in oil and stock prices. This may also relate to the Canadian challenge to changes in NAFTA agreements after the US moved to impose duties on softwood lumber exports. The talks are due to start today and carry on until the 21st November; the slight softness in the Loonie suggests that investors may be nervous about the outcome. Speaking of trade agreements, the Trans-Pacific Partnership or TPP was also making its presence felt in the currency markets this week as it struggles to gain traction. Canada appear hesitant to confirm their attendance but New Zealand’s Prime Minister insists the deal is still alive despite reports that the Green party intends to vote against its coalition partner when the final deal reaches the House. Australia had some good news to report, with NAB’s two measures of business confidence demonstrating confidence in the future. NAB's business conditions, which looks at how things are going right now, was seven points higher at 21 while business confidence where things are going in the short term - was unchanged from an upwardly-revised 8. The counterbalance to this was the shake-out in commodity, equity and energy prices that contributed to a broad riskoff attitude. On the oil front, doubts emerged about the commitment of Russia to capping oil production. At the same time a story did the rounds about North American oil sands and fracking producers and their ability quickly to compensate for any shortfall in OPEC output. Tuesday morning's weaker-than-expected Chinese ecostats contributed to the idea that demand for Australia's coal and iron ore exports could wane.

The Plumbago is a wonderful evergreen shrub for the addition of blue much of the year to your garden. Like so many plants in Spain, Plumbago (Plumbago auriculata), also known as Cape Leadwort, is a native of South Africa. This woody shrub with its beautiful azure blue flowers is an extremely reliable, resilient plant which has been popular for home gardens as well as for commercial landscapes for many years.

It can be pruned to grow like a vine and scramble over supports, pruned into a more compact shrub, or left to sprawl with its long gracefully arching branches. The flowers are born in rounded terminal clusters and look rather like Phlox flowers and the plants bloom for most of the year except for the coldest winter months.

C U LT U R E Plumbago does best in light, sandy soils with good drainage. Do not add lime to the soil; it likes a slightly acidic pH. The foliage may turn yellow due to manganese deficiency, but applying manganese sulfate will cure that. Plumbago needs to be pruned heavily to keep it neat and within bounds and to make it bushy to maximize the number of flowers. It produces its flowers on the current season's growth, so you can prune it in late winter and not worry about cutting off flower buds. Light: Full sun. Flowering will be reduced in partial shade. Moisture: Plumbago survives with little watering once established, and is considered moderately drought tolerant. Hardiness: It can withstand some frosts. Even if killed to the ground, it usually recovers quickly. Propagation: Plumbago is propagated easily from seed, cuttings and suckers. Seed: Sow seed in spring in seedling trays. Use good seedling mix and cover the seeds lightly. Do not allow to dry out. Cuttings: Plumbago can be propagated from tip cuttings in summer, before they get too woody. Put

Use Plumbago in borders, foundation plantings, and for colour massed in beds. It is also great as a container plant that spills over the sides with showers of pretty blue flowers. Many gardeners use Plumbago as a background or filler plant under and in front of shrubs that have stronger frameworks. It will scramble into trees if allowed and, depending on the size and style of your garden, you may need to control it. Plumbago also makes a very good informal or formal hedge as it responds well to pruning. It may need to be cut back after winter to keep it tidy, even if this is only done every few years. It is very useful in large gardens and landscapes as it forms suckers and will cover fairly big areas. Plumbago also makes a wonderful cover for a trellis: Prune it so that side shoots grow out to cover the framework and then let it loose to scramble. Plumbago is a great magnet for butterflies so that is an added bonus of this lovely plant. Plumbago is also a medicinal herb and in France is known as dentelaire. It is said to relieve toothache if chewed. If a decoction is made of the roots in olive oil, it is apparently excellent for relieving itching. There are a couple of drawbacks to Plumbago. The roots form an invasive system which will dive under paths, patios and the house - although they will not do the same sort of damage as a large tree. The other problem, in our house anyway, is the dogs! The flowers are sticky, so whenever you - or your dog brush against the shrub, you are likely to come away covered in blue flowers. When the flowers drop they turn black and glue themselves to the patio and the stains are quite hard to remove. However, Plumbago provides many rewards for very little effort and is a very welcome addition to your Spanish garden. Marc Vijverberg

It is located northwest of Trinidad and Tobago, northeast of Venezuela and southwest of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Before the arrival of Europeans to the Americas, Grenada was inhabited by the indigenous Arawaks and later by the Island Caribs. Christopher Columbus sighted Grenada in 1498 during his third voyage to the Americas. Although it was deemed the property of the King of Spain, there are no records to suggest the Spanish ever landed or settled on the island

Toward independence In 1950 Eric Gairy founded the Grenada United Labour Party, initially as a trades union, which led the 1951 general strike for better working conditions. This sparked great unrest—so many buildings were set ablaze that the disturbances became known as the "red sky" days—and the British authorities had to call in military reinforcements to help regain control of the situation.

Post-independence coups Independence was granted on February 7, 1974, under the leadership of Eric Gairy, who became the first Prime Minister of Grenada. Civil conflict gradually broke out between Eric Gairy's government and some opposition parties including the Marxist New Jewel Movement . Gairy's party won Grenada since 1983 When US troops withdrew from Grenada in December 1983, Nicholas Brathwaite of the National Democratic Congress was appointed prime minister of an interim administration by Scoon until elections could be organised. The first democratic elections since 1976 were held in December 1984 and were won by the Grenada National Party under Herbert Blaize who served as prime minister until his death in December 1989. Ben Jones succeeded Blaize as prime minister and served until the March 1990 election, which was won by the National Democratic Congress under Nicholas Brathwaite who returned as prime minister for a second time until he resigned in February 1995. He was succeeded by George Brizan who served until the June 1995 election which was won by the New National Party under Keith Mitchell who went on to win the 1999 and 2003 elections and served for a record 13 years until 2008. Climate The climate is tropical: hot and humid in the rainy season and cooled by the trade winds in the dry season. Grenada, being on the southern edge of the hurricane belt, has suffered only three hurricanes in fifty years. Tourism Tourism is Grenada's main economic force. Conventional beach and water-sports

tourism is largely focused in the southwest region around St George, the airport and the coastal strip. Ecotourism is growing in significance. Most small ecofriendly guesthouses are located in the Saint David and Saint John parishes. The tourism industry is increasing dramatically with the construction of a large cruise ship pier and esplanade. Up to four cruise ships per day were visiting St. Georges in 2007–2008 during the cruise ship season. Tourism is concentrated in the southwest of the island, around St. George, Grand Anse, Lance Aux Epines, and Point Salines. Grenada has many idyllic beaches around its coastline including the 3 km (1.9 mi) long Grand Anse Beach in St George which is considered to be one of the finest beaches in the world and often appears in countdowns of the world's top ten beaches. Besides these excellent beaches, tourists' favourite points of interest yet in Grenada are the waterfalls. Natural and historical places According to its website, True Blue Bay Boutique Resort is one the resorts which has engaged in environmentally friendly activities, some of which are listed on its site. I’m lonely and want to make friends They still don’t approve I have recently moved to a new area of Spain with my husband. I had lots of friends where we used to live, but now am finding it difficult. My husband has his own interests, and I am left in the home and feel isolated and lonely at times. We live on a complex and I chat to the neighbours, but everyone seems to have their own lives.

There are many ways of making new friends as a retiree in Spain. Why not see if there is a ladies club or WI in your area. Or, volunteering for an afternoon or so in the local charity shop, is a great way to meet new people. If you are fit, dog walking is another good pastime, even if you don’t have a dog you can volunteer at the local dog charity. There are lots of suggestions on the local Forum, so do have a look at those, or ask questions of the members on the Forum as to what is available in your area.

I have been in a three year relationship with my boyfriend, and my Mum and Dad have not warmed to him after all this time. They disapproved in the beginning because he is 13 years older, is still married and has a child. He also doesn’t work full time, and has never learned to drive, and my parents think things like this are important if we are to stay together. I work full time, do all the driving, and I know my parents don’t like it and say he isn’t pulling his weight.

I can see your parents side of things. Although these points don’t bother you now, your parents might be worried that these issues will become important to you as you get older. We all change as we age, and if your boyfriend has not made a few changes to improve things for you both, you might grow resentful in time. Why not make a few suggestions to him that he learn to drive, and take on more hours at work.

Advent and Christmas services 2017 The Anglican Chaplaincy of St. Peter and St. Paul in Torrevieja has now released their programme for Advent and Christmas services. As a Real Estate Agent, I have seen on many, many occasions homeowners that believe they have what it takes to sell any home. They thought they were in the wrong career and after watching so many property programmes, this was their long lost dream job. What many people don’t understand is that it takes a skill to sell a home. Anyone can open a door and stand there, but what makes a true professional, is the way they actually verbalize the sale of the home to a potential buyer. Some homeowners think, that as they’ve got nothing to hide, then pointing out every little feature, will easily convert a looker into a buyer in no time. Sure, there are some things that simply must be told to the buyer, but there’s plenty more you might be volunteering when you would be truly better off keeping your mouth strategically closed. Ever heard the expression, “less is more?” When selling your property, this is the ideal time to actually use that expression for what it’s worth. “Our home is in perfect condition!” Everyone knows that nothing is perfect, and if you are committing to a “perfect conditioned home” then it had better be just that…. PERFECT! Every house, whether it’s a new build or a resale, has something that needs to be fixed, adjusted or improved.

“It’s been on the market for x amount of days.” This should never be discussed with any buyer, as they will see it as ammo for any offer they may be contemplating on making. Yes the information will be there for the buyer to find out, but you don’t need to be the one to bring this topic up. The longer it’s been on the market will encourage a buyer to come in lower, than if they think they’re one of the first to view. “We were going to change that if we’d have been staying” No-one needs to be told the negatives of any house. And if you were planning on knocking down walls, or upgrading kitchens and bathrooms, the buyer doesn’t need to know, as this will force the buyers to think twice about 1. Would they want to take on these changes too after a short time of living there? and 2. Do the potential changes reflect in the asking price? “We won’t take anything less than…” When selling a home you need to be a little flexible, and being firm with a buyer as you’re showing them around your home for the first time, is definitely NOT the right time to discuss whether you’re serious about selling or not. Discussing your disapproval for any potential negotiations is like showing a red rag to a bull, to any buyer. You don’t want to send them a message that you are not open to negotiating, as buyers won’t even try to work out an acceptable price, as they will feel defeated from the start. CAT CASTRATION A SUCCESS To reduce the local stray cat population the town council has been running a castration campaign. The campaign has been supported by the provision of funds from the Alicante Provincial council. Altogether €13,972 was made available for Torrevieja to use. According to recent veterinary figures the total number that have been castrated as part of this campaign is now up to 355. Stray cats are caught in trap cages and are taken to the vets whoare contracted to carry out the castrations. They are then returned to their original colony. The cats which are partly tame and have been abandoned and kittens are transferred to foster homes after their recovery. It is hoped an adoptive home can be found for them. ‘We calculate that each female can have at least two to three litters a year with an average of four kittens each,’ explains Councillor Carmen Morate. ‘With this campaign and these statistics, that means that we have prevented in one year, 3,000 unwanted animals being born.

There are 140 of these altogether who are registered and Councillor Morate would like to thank them too for the work they have contributed, helping to control and care for the town’s cat population. The councillor would like to emphasise how important it is that animals are castrated, and not only those on the streets. A recent survey showed that many pet

owners do not see the point in having their animal neutered. However, this can also lead to unwanted puppies and kittens that can end up on the streets. Councillor Morate considers that the only long term solution to the stray cat population is that of castration and the careful control of the colonies. The cats do have a function as they keep in check colonies of rats and other pests. As such, removing them entirely could have undesirable consequences. Suzanne O’Connell

Quesada Ladies Club 25th Anniversary 1992 saw the beginning of a Ladies Club in Quesada with just a few members. Now, 25 years later, it is still going strong with 97 members. The ladies decided to celebrate this occasion with a lunch at The Club House, La Marquesa Golf. This was attended by 85 members and guests. Maureen Roberts, current President informed those gathered that there were two previous Presidents, previous Treasurers and Secretaries present as well as the current Auditor. Guests also included two founder members, one of which being Joan Wood who at 91 years of age, still attends the meetings every Tuesday afternoon. A spokesperson for the ladies said, “We would like to thank the staff of the Club House for providing us with an excellent lunch and we ended the afternoon with the cutting of a large cake and every member and guest receiving a gift commemorating the day.

Europe’s biggest land-locked beach to open in Spain Europe’s biggest inland beach will be open for bathers from the year 2020 in a town well over 400 kilometres from the nearest coast. Alovera, in the land-locked CastillaLa Mancha province of Guadalajara, is barely 50 kilometres from Madrid, so it is often quicker for inhabitants to fly to the closest beach from Barajas airport. However, it will have its own in less than three years, thanks to a €15.6-million investment by the construction firm Rayet. A 25,000-metre lake – over six acres – bordered by 15,000 metres (3.7 acres) of sandy shores with the usual kiosk-type beach bars, a huge water park, and even a watersports area are included in the complex designed by an international company which specialises in inland beaches, Crystal Lagoon. Areas clearly separated from each other for safety and comfort will include a sailing zone, bathing area, children’s pool and slides, a watersports school teaching kayaking, paddle-surfing and other popular sea-based activities and a sports and training area with beach volley-

ball courts, zip-lines and an outdoor gym. Restaurants and snack bars as well as the beach kiosks, known as chiringuitos, will be set up, and parking spaces for more than 1,000 cars, and easy access to the A-2 motorway will ensure the town of Alovera itself is not rammed solid with traffic or stationary vehicles. An under-developed area, neglected and with few facilities, Alovera is currently undergoing a 21st-century-style regeneration. This will include the beach, plus a huge green park and around 1,200 ‘seafront’ homes. The Rayet Group says it strongly objects to gigantic mass development projects, criticising the now-defunct Eurovegas and the recently-approved Torres de la Alameda estate in the Madrid region, and insists it is more in favour of creating useful and attractive areas than simply piling up concrete. It predicts around a quarter of a million and 400,000 visitors a year will head to Alovera beach once it is built, not

counting restaurant and watersports school customers. Crystal Lagoons, which has a presence in 15 countries, says its technology is very environmentally-friendly. “An artificial lake of this type uses 30 times less water than the average golf course, only requires 2 per cent of the energy used in standard filtering systems and 100 times fewer additives,” says the area manager for Crystal Lagoon Europe. They expect the beach will create around 170 new directly-linked jobs and about 200 indirect positions, as well as 130 temporary jobs during the building stage.

The issue of Russian interference in the Catalan crisis has raised European concerns about the manipulation of public opinion and resulted in the European Union’s foreign and defence ministers debating ways to improve common strategies against this growing challenge. Spain’s Alfonso Dastis warned his European colleagues about attempts to destabilise Spain at a meeting that ended with a call for greater efforts to fight online interference. Just days before the gathering of the Foreign Affairs Council, the Spanish government received evidence of the scope of Russian agents’ influence on the Catalan separatist campaign. RUSSIANS MEDDLE IN REFERENDUM pain on has raised the issue of “disinformation and manipulation” ema-nating from Russia during the Catalan independence crisis, at a meeting of EU foreign and defence ministers. Madrid had said that it was concerned by Russian social media activity on Catalonia, after misleading reports and images shared widely online helped fuel the standoff triggered by the banned 1st October independence referendum. It is just the latest issue linked to Russian interference through social media. There have also been accusations of Russian involvement in the election of US President Donald Trump and in the campaign ahead of Britain's Brexit vote. EU ministers are now expected to increase resources for countering Russian disinformation campaigns. “I will raise the question of how misinformation and manipulation around the referendum and subsequent events in Catalonia have developed,” Spanish Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis said. "These situations of disinformation, of manipulation arise not only on our east-

Over 50 per cent are registered in Russia and 30 per cent in Venezuela. Only 3 per cent of the accounts were real,” added Rajoy. Spain’s defence minister, Dolores de Cospedal, was also present at the Brussels meeting and she said that “many actions came from Russian territory, we don’t know whether specifically from the Russian government. Federica Mogherini, declined to talk specifically about the Catalan case, but said it is important to reinforce EU policy against manipulation. “I asked the ministers to support my request to increase the human and financial resources we can dedicate especially to the three Strategic Communication Task Forces I have established in the course of the last two years – one dedicated to the East, one to the Western Balkans and one to the Arabspeaking world. And I received political support from the ministers on this. Now we will check if the finance ministers will follow the indications of the foreign ministers in the coming weeks,” said Mogherini at a press conference following the meeting. Besides attending the meeting of 28 foreign ministers, Dastis met separately with several of them, including the French, Irish and Belgian representatives. Former Catalan premier Carles Puigdemont and four aides are currently in Belgium, where they fled after failing to show up at a court hearing in a criminal investigation into the illegal secession attempt.

Alicante murder still a mystery The Scientific Information Brigade has admitted to the judge investigating the assassination of María del Carmen Martínez, that the information on the phone of the prime suspect has been erased or is encrypted and unable to be opened. This conclusion has been reached nine months after the electronic gadgets were confiscated from Miguel López following his arrest for the assassination of his sister-in-law María del Carmen Martínez. The victim was the widow of the former president of the CAM savings bank, Vicente Sala. Officers obtained the devices on 8th February, two months after the crime, when Miguel López was arrested as the single suspect. On the same day, the Police also searched both his home – located on the same estate as the victim and the rest of the family and the car sales business he ran. It was from the car dealership that María del Carmen Martínez had gone to collect her car and was shot twice in the head and died instantly on the premises in Alicante. The police confiscated two tablets, two desk top

computers, a laptop and a smartphone (all Apple) with two external hard discs, all belonging to Miguel Lopez. The Police report sent to the magistrate José Luis de la Fuente notes that the smartphone was locked and their attempts to access contacts, last calls or SMS messages, calendar or any other apps failed as they were impossible to decipher. The investigation had centred on the pre-paid card which the suspect had purchased two days before the murder after a huge argument during the meeting of shareholders in the Sala Group, the last one attended by María del Carmen. The specialist scientific detectives also obtained the call records from two smartphones, belonging to two residents of Arab origin, one living in Girona and the other in Almeria, but failed to confirm the ownership of the devices. A landline in Madrid was also tapped and found to belong to a publicity company. Six days after the crime the prepaid card was blocked.

Orihuela Costa gets palm pruner The Municipal Department of Infrastructure in cooperation with the Department of Beaches has agreed a lease agreement on a truck-mounted crane with a driver to prune the palm trees in Orihuela Costa. The city councillor for the beaches, Luisa Boné, pointed out that “the agreement of this lease contract was necessary to remove the foliage, the branches and the palm kernels, and thus to ensure the safety of the pedestrians as well as enabling the cleaning of the pavements and the roads”. Boné explained that “the pruning of the palm trees was usually carried out in a traditional way, by the workers climbing the palm trees with the help of a climbing harness and performing the pruning. However, instructions were received from the Department of Prevention of Risks at Work at the Town Hall of Orihuela that these tasks would have to be carried out in future by mechanical means (cranes

or mobile platforms) in order to guarantee the safety and health of workers while working at height. The sum of this contract amounts to 21.175 euros (including VAT) and the work started this week in the Avenida del Cabo Roig, with the removal of the foliage, the branches and the palm kernels in this street.

Torrevieja doctor named President of SEOQ Doctor Pedro Bretcha, a specialist in surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgery at Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja (Alicante) has been appointed President of the Spanish Society of Surgical Oncology (SEOQ), at the national conference held this weekend in

Palma, which was attended by surgical oncology professionals. Doctor Bretcha joined the medical staff at Quirónsalud Torrevieja in 2001. He was a spokesperson for SEOQ from 2010 to 2013, at which point he was appointed vice president of the society. He was also a member of the advisory board for the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO), and coordinator of the Spanish surgical

peritoneal oncology Group (GECOP) from 2011 to 2013. Doctor Bretcha graduated in medicine and surgical treatment in 1992 at theAutonomous University of Barcelona. He completed the MIR examination (necessary to obtain a place as a specialist), at the Mutua de TerrasaUniversitary Hospital. In 2000 he spent time in Mount Sinai Hospital in New York to perfect advanced laparoscopic

surgery techniques. In 2002 he had the opportunity to stay at the National Cancer Institute (N.I.H.) in Washington, in the metabolic Surgery Unit, to learn about local-regional therapies with hyperthermic chemotherapy. This year he presented his doctoral thesis at Miguel Hernández University in Elche, called “Multimodal treatment of peritoneal carcinomatosis using radical surgery with pro-operative intraperitonealhyperthermic chemotherapy”. Doctor Bretcha is one of a small number of Spanish specialists that has the surgical oncology certificate from the European Board of Surgery. This title is the only surgical oncology classification that exists in Spain and in the rest of Europe (there is no similar certification in the United States at present). He is also a member of the examining board of European surgical oncology from 2007. Furthermore Doctor Pedro Bretcha is certified as a “Console Surgeon” by the Da Vinci Surgical System. This system of robotic surgery allows the surgeon to control the robot from a console and is meant for complicated interventions from a minimally invasive point of view. Da Vinci enhances a doctors eyesight, precision and control. He has made numerous statements and is co-author of many communications given at conferences. He chaired the National SEOQ conference that took place in Alicante in 2013, and was invited as a speaker to the closing ceremony of the National Medical Student Conference in the same city. Doctor Bretcha has collaborated as a volunteer for the medical Association GEDEOM, andhe set up the Surgical Oncology service for Bluefields Hospital in Nicaragua in 2012.

Pam via email asks: Hi Aunty. When I start my Acer tower computer it runs something called Check Disk that scans for errors on my C: disk drive. It finds faults and fixes them and then Windows starts and everything is normal. I get the option to cancel (I get 20 seconds I think) but how do I stop Check Disk from running every time this as it can take 20 minutes before I can use my computer and is this something I should be concerned about? Aunty Says: Hello Pam. As the Check Disk service is running every time you start your computer I suspect you may have a faulty hard disk. I would strongly recommend making a copy of all of your valuable documents and pictures and look at getting a new hard disk fitted. I will email you a rough idea of what you should expect to pay and a contact number for an engineer. Elaine via email asks: Hello Aunty. Following your advice I have downloaded the

Malwarebytes free program but when it had finished installing it was in Spanish instead of English. How do I change it, or will I have to re-download it from an English source? I am always nervous that I could press the wrong keys.

Aunty Says: Hi Elaine. You can normally change the languages of most apps via a tools or option page which i can be found from a menu along the top, or quite often these days, a spanner or cog shaped icon. After starting Malwarebytes click on the “Configuracion” cog icon followed by “Configuracion General” in the left hand list and you will see a drop down list titled ‘idioma’ which is where the language can be changed. Some programs/apps (such as Skype) have the change language

options under ‘herramientas” or “opcoines. Eli via email asks: Hello Aunty. I am more frequently been told by friends and family that they have sent me emails which I have either not received and/or returned to them with various delivery error messages. I have also sent emails that they say were not received. Is this possible? Can emails disappear? Aunty Says: They can’t simply ‘disappear’ Eli but emails can certainly be blocked or dumped at various firewalls, checkpoints or “hops” along the way. I notice you are still using a Spanish @telefonica.net email address which was a notoriously poor service so maybe change over to a reputable email service such as Google’s Gmail or Yahoo. You should also regularly check your spam/junk folder as genuine incoming emails sometimes get incorrectly labelled as spam. Seatbelt cameras now in place Special cameras designed to spot drivers and passengers who are not wearing their seatbelts are now in operation and those who are caught will face fines of €200 and a loss of three licence points, confirms Spain's General Directorate of Traffic (DGT). By law, camera locations must be disclosed – as is the case with speed traps – and a list has been published on the website DGT.es For the last few months, those drivers who were caught on standard traffic police radars not wearing a seatbelt would only receive a letter informing them they had been seen and reminding them of the dangers, but would not be fined unless they were actually caught by an officer at the roadside. The same would apply if a child was spotted without the correct restraints or booster seat for his or her age, or sitting in a parent's lap in the front seat. However, from last Saturday, anyone filmed on the new cameras will indeed be fined, and the offender will receive a letter with a photograph as proof in the same way as they would if they were caught by a speed camera.

Parking on Local Roads – The Truth The internet and social media are frequently seen as the source for fake articles, often shared with good intention, but occasionally incorrect. Once these articles are on the web they often resurface, time after time, and so it becomes increasing important to clarify the reality of these myths. Parking restrictions implemented by local authorities are organised by their own Ordenanza Reguladora de Aparcamiento, or ORA. One frequently recycled rumour calls doubt on the legality of these ORA areas, and for that reason, explains how a vehicle owner not only has a way of avoiding paying the parking fee, can also avoid the subsequent fines for doing so. Sadly though, in a world where a loophole may well result in a fortune in fees and fines, the rumours and speculation is entirely that, a rumour which has no basis in law and is therefore false. The first myth that has been circulating is that the private companies have no authority to issue fines, and so any motorist is free to park, without paying, and without fear of repercussions. It is indeed true is that the company that controls the parking does not issue fines. They are mostly private companies who manage the service on behalf of the town hall, usually in exchange for a fee. It is the local authority that is

responsible for deciding if a penalty should be imposed on an illegally parked motorist, and therefore issues the fine. The private operators who monitor the areas report their findings to the authorities as part of their contractual obligations. The local authority then issues the subsequent fines. Similarly, another myth is that any motorist who pays local road tax is legally entitled to park anywhere in the town without further payment. Again, this is not true. The municipalities are empowered to establish regulated parking areas and to assign the management of fines in those areas to private companies. The rumour mill also suggests that the controlling companies have no right to issue the parking tickets and affix them to the windscreen. It is true that these documents are not what might be considered a sanction, but are in fact a notification of the fact that the vehicle has been reported for the offence named. However, one thing that the parking attendants do not have whereas the police do is the presumption of truth. Therefore, appeals are dealt with without any prejudice to either side, and are processed as per the evidence presented. An example of this might be a driver reported for exceeding the time regulated for parking, who is entitled to ask the complainant for evidence that an

infringement has taken place and provide evidence to the contrary. And municipalities are required to consider such appeal, but remember as a matter of balance, both the complainant and the appellant have to produce the evidence. However, the authorities are no more or less likely to appeal such penalties. In any case, each penalty is considered different and must be studied in depth if it is appealed, how and whether it is worth doing and the individual merits of each case. To summarise, it is true that the private companies do not issue fines and simply report the infractions. In fact, anybody can report a vehicle for illegal parking. It is then up to the local authority to consider if there is sufficient evidence to issue a fine for actions contrary to their own local ordinances and other laws and road tax plays no part in these fines. In short, wherever you might be, parking restrictions may well be in place, whether through the rules of the road or the local authority´s own rules. Always check if you can park and any restrictions that might be in place. Remember the rules of parking in a safe, convenient and legal manner, and forget the rumours that you might have heard on the internet, because if you are in the wrong and you get fined, you have to pay, so try to avoid the problem in the first place. Buying and Selling a Car When you sell a car, you need to fill in a SALE CONTRACT, and make a photocopy of the buyer´s id. Make sure you include the date and the time when the vehicle was handed over. Inform the buyer that they have 15 days to go to the Traffic Office and change the Log Book into their name and send you a copy to verify this has happened. After 15 days, if this has not been done, YOU, the seller. Will have to go to the Traffic Office with: 1.Your ID 2. Photocopy of the buyer´s id. 3. Sales Contract (Signed by both buyer and seller) 4. Fill in the “Notification of Sale” Document. (You can download this from DGT website or get a copy on the information desk of the Traffic Office.) If for any reason you have forgotten to do these steps and you cannot contact the buyer, go to the Traffic Office and deregister your vehicle. In Spain, this is known as “Dar de Baja Temporal un Vehiculo”. From that moment you will not pay the annual tax, and when the vehicle is stopped by the police, and they check that the vehicle is deregistered, the vehicle will be clamped or towed away until the problem is solved. If you have bought a car, remember you have 15 days to transfer it into your name. We are going to explain step by step how to do it;

– Write on the sale contract date/hour. From that moment you will be the provisional owner. – You will need to go to the Traffic Office with the following documents; 1- Sales Contract (signed by both parties) 2- Photocopy of the seller´s id. 3- The originals, not copies, of the logbook (Permiso de Circulación) and ITV. 4- Last year´s road tax certificate, known in some places as Suma. 5- Application to change the ownership which is the “Solicitud Cambio de Titularidad”. You can download it from DGT webpage or get one in the Traffic office. When you have all these documents, call the number 060, to make an appointment with the Traffic Office. Go to the TAX OFFICE (Hacienda) and pay the TAX “Transfer Tax” (Transmisiones Patrimoniales, model 620). You can download this model from the webpage of the Ministry of Treasury. (www.agenciatributaria.es) After paying the tax, go to the TRAFFIC OFFICE, where you will have to pay a FEE (depending of the vehicle you are going to buy; car, motorbike…) and give them the receipt you got when you pay the model 620 together with all 6 documents. Blue Lights in 2018

Driving in Rain Changes in the weather provides significant risk to road users, and so our driving must be adapted at all times. Rain is one of the biggest contributors to weather related incidents. In Spain, long, dry periods are often followed by significant rainfall. In the first rainfall after a dry spell, the roads are particularly hazardous, as water falls onto the dust and surface coating on the road, creating extremely poor adhesion in places. Plus, drainage systems are not always able to cope with the immediacy of the downpour, and so roads become flooded, particularly in dips which are designed to

control the flow of water. When driving in wet weather, slow down and allow extra distance between you and the car in front. This will mean that you should allow extra time for your journey, or be prepared to arrive late. It is far better to arrive late, than not at all. Movements should be slow and steady, not harsh, to ensure your tyres are able to maintain as much grip as possible, and if you think you or your vehicle are not prepared to drive in wet conditions, then don´t. Windscreen wipers and headlights will allow for better visibility, not only for you, but other road users too. Take care, take it easy and take it slow. Mark Nolan

Headlights Question Mark There are many common questions about road signs and signals, this time we will explain about "headlights question mark". The sign, which has the code S-24, normally works in conjunction with another, R-413. Let´s look at a common scenario, a tunnel, where there are also some other changes to rules which we discuss another time. We now have to remember one of the basics of traffic signs, circles give us orders (things we must or must not do), whereas squares or rectangles are informative. As we approach a tunnel, we see R-413, a blue circular sign featuring a pictogram of headlights. telling us we must switch our lights on. As we leave the tunnel, we see sign S24, which is a rectangular sign featuring a pictogram of headlights and a question mark.

Having followed the process from the beginning, we are now able to report that the mandatory referendum on all emergency services to display flashing blue lights has received unanimous positive support through the legislative process. As the process will now continue to proceed and, if all still goes to plan, blue lights (Rotativos azules to give them their Spanish name) will enter into service on ambulances and fire tenders from March, 2018. But, when we leave the tunnel, a sign cannot tell us we must switch them off, as we could be emerging during the night or in poor visibility, and so S-24, an informative sign, tells us to check if we still need our headlights on or not. As a final note, remember that when we talk about headlights, we don´t mean Daytime Running Lights (DRL), they are not sufficient when it comes to illuminating areas such as tunnels, or at night. A GREAT EXTRA DAY’S RACING At the request of the competitors after the racing on November 5th, the SAMM Race Committee added an extra day to the scheduled program on Sunday November 12th to make the most of the continuing fine weather we are all enjoying at the moment. As it was Armistice Sunday, at the briefing, a one minute silence was observed. The organisers were rewarded when 9 boats came to the start line for the morning race at 11.30. As the wind was off shore a figure of eight course was set with upwind leg between marks two and three for safety. All boats started well but soon became strung out as many of the faster boats gradually pulled away from the others. It almost became a procession with the order of the Topaz followed in turn by Shoestrings Tres and Dos then the Laser Radial and Shoestring Uno continued to the finish. The afternoon race was more exciting. Just before the start The Topaz capsized twice due to gear problems but managed to start in the middle of the pack. There was controversy over a call for “Water” at the first mark which resulted in an official protest. The Laser 1 had to retire during lap 2 due to gear failure and was towed to the shore by the support boat. The

Topaz again capsized during lap 2 when a sudden 90 degree wind shift from NW to SW caught out many boats. The mornings procession was almost repeated but in the order Shoestring Tres, Dos, Topaz, Uno, Laser Radial although the Radial managed to overhaul Uno during lap 3. The protest was heard after racing had finished when it was determined that the boat calling for water had not achieved the desired overlap required under the rules so his protest was unfounded. After handicaps were applied the winning order for both races was. 1st Topaz Duo, Julian Singleton. 2nd Shoestring Tres, Tug Wilson. 3rd Shoestring Dos, John Down. The Shoestring boats are both Laser 2000’s.

And so back to the Ashes. Firstly, let’s just respect the fact that England’s Women have just failed to bring back their version of the tiny little urn. We shouldn’t think of them as failures, just cricketers that were unable to win the one single thing worth winning if you are an English cricketer. The men’s side have been preparing as well as they can considering they are playing sub-

standard opposition, arranged by the Australian Cricket Board and not the ECB cleverly trying to find teams that represent where Australia’s Test side currently sit. Stoneman and Malan seem in reasonable form with the bat, but the bowling line-up looks like the walking wounded and bowlers not quite into their rhythm just yet. They don’t call it the Gabbatoir for nothing, and the 1st Test on Thursday will be a big test, no pun intended for once, for this England side. If I am reporting a victory for England this time next week I will be both surprised, happy and rich considering the odds being offered.

San Miguel Golf Society A trip to Altorreal, just north of the city of Murcia, always leads to at least some poor souls getting lost, and today was no exception. However, far more unfortunate was one member’s clutch giving out a minute from the course, meaning him having to miss the round and sort out the vehicle’s return. So 30 members and 3 guests finally took on what turned out to be a course in somewhat disappointing condition given its excellent state the last time the society visited back in the spring. Greens, whilst generally slick and true varied in pace and were covered in lightly sanded patches. Many bunkers were very hard with compacted sand, and some areas of the fairways and semi-rough were quite wet. These factors, possibly with the added addition of joints only starting to loosen up after the very cold start once the sun’s warmth had started to be felt, led to some average scoring. Steve Higgins (34) posted the best return of the day, with only half a dozen members beating 30. CLAPTON’S GOLF SOCIETY Las Ramblas Social Club Here we are once again at Font del Llop. With a 10.20 tee and with the sun shining and a little bit of a chilly breeze we got off the first tee ten minutes late. The course looked in excellent condition and was right for some good scores. As the day went on the breeze dropped and we were left with a nice sunny day for some good golf. As the players began to finish their rounds it was fairly obvious that our earlier thoughts would come to fruition. The last four ball came in and we made our way back to our new Clubhouse at The Club in Quesada, where a grand buffet was supplied by our hosts. The scores were then totted up, cards shuffled about for the winner to appear with 36 points. Congratulations to Kevin Williams. Presentation followed and the results are below. Welcome back, yet again, to the Premier League circus. It feels like we have welcomed them back too many times already considering it is only November. Surprisingly, no other managers lost their job over the break, but the race to be the next Premier League manager to be sacked is just coming round the final bend. It’s probably a little bit too soon to be suggesting David Moyes’ tenure as West Ham gaffer will be a short one. Moyes said before the game that West Ham is not his last chance in football management. I beg to differ David. You looked all tanned, relaxed and happy when declaring your interest in Bilic’s job when in Dubai. For some unknown reason the hair looks a little more grey on Moyes’ head once again, following a debut 2-0 defeat to Watford. Granted, Watford handled the ball with more frequency and style than Joe Hart, but West Ham players got themselves into this situation so, quite frankly, they deserve at least 12 months of the former Everton manager. That said, I am still putting him in at 8/10 of the sackability ratings. Still, at least he heads to the Athletic Stadium with the West Ham fans on his side. Antonio Conte is growing a beard. The question is, following Chelsea’s 4-0 at West Bromwich Albion, which will last longer - Conte’s beard or Tony Pulis as WBA’s manager? It’s all well and

good subjecting the Albion fans to PulisBall when you are nicking matches 1-0 and steering clear of the relegation zone but Pulis has not won in ages and the club are sitting just above the dreaded drop zone. I’m going to suggest Pulis has a sackability rating of 9/10 right now. Mo Salah was electric once more, meaning that Mauricio Pellegrino’s sackability rating has edged up to an all-time high of 8.5/10. One manager that is unlikely to get sacked but, on the opposite side of the coin, might find his scurrilous tactics to get a new contract by flirting openly with PSG fail miserably is Manchester United’s Jose Mourinho. Do you remember when United were scoring four each game? Do you? Paul Pogba was in the team back then and upon the Frenchman’s return guess what happened? That’s right, United scored four. It’s almost as if that £90m did get them a good player after all. Zlatan Ibrahimovic also returned to the side, starting his one-man crusade to come out of international retirement for next year’s World Cup and upset all the good work Sweden have put in since he got out of the way. After the game Jose revealed the cunning plan that won the game - having both Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial on the pitch at the same time. As I said, cunning. It’s almost as if that is what the United fans have been begging for for

months. Oh Arsenal, why do you keep doing this to your fans? Wenger’s men are the ultimate tease. Arsene has one of the most moveable sackability ratings ever, and following his side’s shock 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur in the North London derby he is back down to a pretty safe 3.5/10 (as if Arsenal would ever have enough about them to sack him). Once again, the selection of Alexis Sanchez, Alexandre Lacazette and Mesut Ozil led to Arsenal being rather good. Once again, the average football fan could have pointed that out to a manager with several decades of football management behind him. Tottenham were surprisingly passive. Someone might have forgotten to let Harry Kane know he was only given one week off to rest, not two. The Spurs striker always scores in London derbies, they say. Not this one, much to the fury of many a Fantasy Football manager. Claude Puel (no sackability rating for the new Leicester City manager until late August next season you’d imagine) saw his honeymoon period come to an abrupt end as Manchester City clinically remained top of the table.
