Two arrestsin Almoradíforexploitation Officers from the National Police have arrested two people in connection with an alleged labour exploitation offence in an agricultural and livestock farm in Almoradí. One of the detainees is an entrepreneur who had allegedly given instructions to employees - usually foreigners in the country without papers - to hide in the manure heap on the farm to avoid detection should any officials came calling. The two are alleged to have committed a crime of documentary misrepresentation and crimes against the rights of workers. Police were alerted to a potentially illegal situation at the farm following a complaint lodged at police
stations in Murcia, tipping officers off regarding a series of irregularities within the small holding. Officers from the National Police
began a joint investigation and verified that at the farm appeared to be committing irregularities in the level of labour it employed. In addition, the
company did not have the required safety equipment which is included in the regulations on the Prevention of Occupational Risks. Owners were also leasing accommodation to the workers, which were little more that ‘booths’ located inside the farm, some of them with ‘very little safety conditions or comforts’. At the time of the police and labour inspection, two retired foreign nationals were also working. According to the statements of those involved, it is believed that the employer allegedly used to hire foreigners who were desperate for work as they had no official or legal paperwork. It is said that the employer gave them strict instructions on how to act in case of a police presence, such as hiding in the manure heap on the farm ‘to avoid detection’. In addition, the farm manager is alleged to have made up an employment relationship with another person in order
for the pretend worker to obtain certain ‘administrative benefits’ for foreigners through a false work contract. This falsehood was detected by the Office of Foreigners in Murcia and notice was given to the Labour Inspection Unit of Alicante, which annulled all fraudulent benefits of this alleged worker. The investigators have arrested the employer and the person who simulated this non-existent employment relationship and who was also in an irregular situation in Spain. N332 to be widened at last?
Festival of the third age On the 15th, 16th and 17th September, Torrevieja held their annual event dedicated to seniors in the centro municipal de ocio. The fair had been organised by the councillor for the third age, Fabiana Ibarra, and activities included music, talks and exhibitions all aimed at those of an older age. The councillor explained that this event is intended; ‘to improve the quality of life of older people and to more fully include them in the different opportunities that exist.’ A fashion show, a dance competition and a number of other shows and activities were on offer. A number of different businesses, associations and artists took part to demonstrate what they can do and offer and the different services that might be of use both now and in the future.
International tapas day This day will be celebrated on the 30th September from 12pm until 4.30pm and from 7.30pm until 11pm. Restaurants and bars have been invited to take part by the provincial councillor Manuela Osuna. She said; ‘we want the residents and visitors to know more about our gastronomy and the tapas tradition whilst spending an enjoyable Saturday. All those establishments who are interested in participating must send an email to comercio@torrevieja.eu. It is hard to see through all the claims and counter claims as to who is really responsible for the bottleneck on the N332 as it passes through Torrevieja. However, it does seem as though we might be moving towards a resolution of the debate surrounding this controversial road.
The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, has reported that the Ministry of Development has once more taken up the issue and is prepared to set the project in motion again. The mayor has received a letter from the Minister, Inigo de la Serna, which indicates that the General
Directorate of Highways has decided to order the drafting and construction of the N332 through Torrevieja. The mayor displayed to the press on the 12th September the number of letters and other forms of communication that have been made by the present local government. The expressed aim is to secure the reopening of the issue and a commitment from the Spanish government to solving the problem once and for all. There has been debate over a period of years as to where exactly the responsibility for the modifications to the N332 lie. Finally it would seem that the national government is prepared to take responsibility and move ahead with the much-needed changes. The citizens of Torrevieja and surrounding areas will now wait anxiously to see if this commitment is acted on any time soon. Suzanne O’Connell
Thousands of Ryanair passengers facing cancellations Budget airline Ryanair is set to cancel 40 to 50 flights per day over the next six weeks. Europe’s largest airline blamed ‘a combination of air traffic control (ATC) capacity delays and strikes, weather disruptions and the impact of increased holiday allocations to pilots and cabin crew’. It comes as the airline is switching its April-March annual leave calendar to the January-December model. This means flight crews are now seeking to take their full allocation of holiday, creating a staff shortage. Up to 9,000 passengers per day face
having their travel plans wrecked. Ryanair said: “Customers will be contacted directly about this small number of cancellations and offered alternative flights or full refunds.” If Ryanair does not have a suitable alternative flight passengers are entitled to be booked on rival airlines. They must also be provided with meals and accommodation until they reach their destination. Depending on the amount of notice given, they could also qualify for compensation of up to €400.

English conversation classes begin Conversation classes at the CIAJ are due to begin again on Tuesday 19th September. The classes are organised by Crystal East and this year will mark their fifth anniversary at the beginning of November. The classes bring together native speakers of English with people who are keen to learn or improve their English. They take place in Torrevieja’s youth centre (CIAJ) on the Paseo Juan Aparicio right on the sea front in Torrevieja. The classes rely on volunteers who are happy to dedicate a couple of hours a week to chatting on different topics with their Spanish students. The lessons run on a Tuesday and Thursday morning from 10am until 12pm and on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons for an hour; 5pm until 6pm. No qualifications are needed on the part of the volunteer but it is expected that the students have a basic level of proficiency. 80,000 euros for swimming pool It will cost Torrevieja €80,000 to re-open the covered swimming pool that has been closed for nearly a year. The major work of replacing the air conditioning tube is now nearly complete and will be followed by one or two minor works before the pool can be reopened. The councillor for sport, Víctor Ferrández, did not want to commit to an exact opening date but has previously hinted that it will be before the winter. The work to make the pool good again is estimated to have cost around €80,000. This budget includes repairs to the machinery necessary for the filter. The swimming pool is now 16 years old and was built at the pinnacle of Torrevieja’s prosperity. Scaffolding needed to be erected to enable the work to take place and this will be followed by some restoration of the walls of the pool and grills. Following this the process of preparing the pool for use again can begin.
More pupils than last year On the 11th September the children of Torrevieja went back to school. The councillor for education José Hurtado announced that between the 12 primary schools in the town there are now 1,827 infant-age pupils and 4,542 primary students. This is an increase of around 100 students from last year. Secondary schools received around 5,650 young people this year spread throughout the five state secondary schools and one semi-private Continued on page 6
pavement not a pavement? The answer – perhaps when it is only 40 centimetres wide. That’s the total amount of space dedicated to the pavement on Calle Ramón and Cajal at some points of the street. Not only that but those who must walk on it are then sandwiched between the bins and graffiti covered, grimy walls. This narrow walkway makes it impossible for anyone in a wheelchair to navigate and this is a real concern given that the road is not a back street but enables access to the plaza de Arturo Gómez. It is only one street removed from the front paseo of Juan Aparicio and is a well-used thoroughfare connecting the front promenade with the internal streets and shopping areas. It is not a new situation, but with age the condition of this street and pavement becomes even more noticeable. The bins that pedestrians are squashed against are not a pretty site and smell particularly badly during the summer as they are used by local bars and restaurants for their waste. There is no alternative passage either as the restaurants opposite have terraces
outside that present another obstacle if you do decide to cross over and walk on the other side of the road. Often in the summer pedestrians end up taking to the road to walk, with all its associated risks. It is hard to see what the solution to this problem might be, but it is one to address if we are to have a mobility friendly city. Suzanne O’Connell
New head of Guardia Civil The new Commander-in-Chief of the Guardia Civil in Torrevieja, Antonio José Leal Bernabéu met the mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, in the town hall on the 13th September. The Commander leads around 200 officers and in his new capacity the mayor discussed security issues for the town. The meeting lasted for more than an hour and centred around the threat of terrorism and what can be done to protect citizens. They also discussed the relationship
between the local police and the Guardia Civil and other organisations such as the Civil Protection. Other topics under discussion included environmental issues, animal protection and housing occupancy. The mayor and the Commander agreed that they would maintain effective communication and have regular meetings to ensure the smooth running of the service. Campaign to stop people BITE SIZE bathing increased NEWS: It’s not an uncommon sight to see people in the pink salt lake bathing in its centre. The minerals and salt water are considered to be beneficial for a number of skin complaints. However, what some people do not realise is that this kind of bathing is, in fact, banned. Now the salt works are making more of an effort to put this ban into force. They have begun to place signs on the east bank of the laguna de Torrevieja to prohibit bathing and rubbish tipping. The signs include the logo from the Council for the Environment of both natural parks in Torrevieja and in La Mata. The reason for the ban is that the lake is in fact an area from which salt is extracted and the salt works have official rights over it. This business is responsible for the activities that take place there. What has tipped the salt works into action was the situation towards the end of August. Some of the machinery which is used to extract the salt collided with some bathers. The machinery is largely submerged and
scrapes the bottom of the lagoon for salt. Two bathers, stopped it in its tracks. Entry to the lake is particularly popular between San Luis and Torreta Florida. The area not only attracts bathers but also artists, photographers and those who want to come and enjoy the spectacular sunsets, particularly at this time of year. However, this tourism is at odds with the business of the salt works. To increase the security of the salt lake, the company also plans to repair the perimeter fencing to prohibit the entry of tourists. However, the salt lagoon is a key local attraction and the management of the natural parks is aware that there is a fine line between preserving the rights of the salt company and enabling people to enjoy the dramatic landscape that the salt lake presents. Alongside its private use for business, it is likely that there will be others who are arguing for its public use. A solution needs to be found and it will not be easy. Suzanne O’Connell
Continued from page 5 school. One of the aims for councillor Hurtado is to see class sizes reduce. Currently the average size is 27 students per class but it is higher in some schools and lower in others. The local government would like to see it lowered to a maximum of 25.
Sports schools set to open The councillor for sport, Victor Ferrández, has announced that the different sports schools will begin again on 2nd October. In total, 1,100 pupils will take part in the different activities on offer. This year the town council have contracted more monitors to help supervise the 150 different clubs. ‘Last year was a difficult year,’ said Councillor Ferrández. ‘This year we are much better organised.’ You can now begin to sign up for the different classes which include rhythmic gymnastics, athletics, judo, rowing, hockey, indoor soccer and hand ball. Basketball has opened for those who have been signed up previously and new participants can sign up from 18th to 29th September. If you are interested in registering your child for any of the clubs available then you should go to the Palacio de los Deportes between the hours of 9 until 2pm, Monday to Friday and from 3pm until 10pm. New participants can sign up from the 2nd October and the cost remains the same at €60 and €30 for large families. In order to register you need to bring your passport or other identification, the family book, a confirmation from your child’s doctor that they are fit to do sport, a photo of the child and confirmation of payment. Pedro Valero laid to rest Former local councillor and great supporter of the international community and associations in Torrevieja, Pedro Valero Mazón, passed away on Wednesday last after losing a long battle against cancer. The funeral took place in the Immaculate Conception church on Thursday with a large crowd in attendance to say their final farewell. The mayor of Torrevieja sent the family an official letter of condolence on behalf of the town hall, saying how well thought of Pedro was in the town and praising the time he dedicated to the municipality. Several Local Police officers stood as guard of honour for Pedro’s coffin as a sign of respect and as a nod to his time as Councillor for Police. The former PP councillor died on Wednesday, aged 55. Valero had
been responsible for Citizen Security, New Technologies and Foreigners for two terms under Pedro Hernández Mateo as mayor. Valero promoted the creation of the first official website for the town

New recruits wanted by Ryanair Low-cost airline Ryanair is looking to expand its cabin crew numbers and is actively recruiting across Spain. Those who wish to apply should go along to one of the personal evaluation days being held in the near future to find out if it is the job for them and whether they fit the criteria. Successful candidates will be given a threeyear contract, although there is no suggestion it will not be renewed
if required afterwards. The first of these evaluation days have already taken place in Palma de Mallorca, Valencia and Madrid but additional ones in these cities will be held next month. For September, the next ones are in Oviedo, Asturias on 19th September; Santiago de Compostela (Galicia), Murcia and Málaga on 20th September; Sevilla on 22nd of the month, and
Barcelona on 27the September. Three foreign tourists raped the same day in Mallorca One British girl and one Swede were sexually abused in the famous resort Magaluf, while a German girl suffered a sexual attack in El Arenal. Three foreign tourists were sexually attacked on the same day in three different events on Mallorca. A British 21 year old girl was abused in Magaluf, while the 20 year old Swede suffered the same fate at around the same time in another part of the holiday complex. Meanwhile, a 30 year old German woman was also attacked in the El Arenal resort, some 10 kilometres southeast of Palma. The German woman told the security services that she was talking with a man in a bar and then her mind went blank and she couldn’t remember anything. She woke up on the beach with her clothes undone and blood stains on her underwear.
Fire brigade called out to help Torrevieja fire brigade were called out to help a British woman who had fallen in her home and broken her hip. The woman, weighing 180 kilos became trapped in her bedroom following the fall and was unable to get herself to the hospital. The usual services were unable to bring her out of her home and the fire brigade were called to assist. The woman was on the second floor of the house and could not be brought downstairs. The operation to get her to the hospital took two hoursas she could not be brought out through the window because the ladder couldn’t take her weight. The stairs of the property were also difficult to negotiate because they were narrow and spiral. She was finally brought out, carried by five fire fighters and two health workers and was taken to the hospital at 4am. The fire fighters also brought her back after she was discharged from hospital in order to help her return to the property. This time they dismantled the bed and put it up on the lower floor so that, if she should need assistance again this would be easier to do. Suzanne O’Connell

More negotiation time hoped to stop airport strike The stoppages planned for September at Spanish airports have been called off but a strike could be called for October if a deal isn't reached to end the conflict before the end of the month. The main trade unions representing the airport workers employed by Aena and Enaire have put off the strike action, which was originally planned to start on Friday 15th September and given the authorities until the end of the month to reach an agreement to end the conflict. After a meeting last Thursday evening it was decided that talks between unions, the firms Aena and Enaire and the government would resume the following week. Union representatives said that they were optimistic and that their “perspectives [on a deal to end the conflict] are very favourable”. However Francisco Javier Casado, of
the union Comisiones Obreras (CCOO), said that if no agreement is reached before the end of September a strike, which this time could not be postponed, would be called for the end of October. The workers had originally announced strike action affecting all Spanish airports on 25 dates this autumn, starting on 15th September. The unions are calling for the employers to make up for the workers' lost spending power in recent years, a sum they calculate to be around 8 percent. They are also calling for more staff to be taken on to replace workers who have retired or taken early retirement: 250 in Enaire and 450 in Aena. Workers' representatives maintain that the time has come for them to benefit from the good results of the firm, which have allowed them to reduce airport taxes.

Bumper year for tourism You don’t really need the statistics to tell you that the number of visitors to Torrevieja this summer has been high. Traffic congestion, lack of parking spaces and volume of people on the promenade are ample evidence. However, Councillor Fanny Serrano has now released the data that proves that it’s been the case. The Tourist Office has received 14,975 visits over the summer months. Of these 66.33% were international tourists rather than Spanish. Although this figure is similar to that of 2016, Councillor Serrano believes they are the tip of the iceberg:
the domestic market. The peak day for making enquiries was the 10th August when around 509 people consulted the offices. The first and last weeks of July were also extremely busy. Of the national enquiries that were made, people originated from:
‘The majority of queries are now pursued on the internet, using social media and websites as the source of information,’ explains the councillor. The Tourist Office receiving the most queries is the most central. The office on the Paseo Vista Alegre received more than 76% of the enquiries. This high proportion is also due to their increased opening hours. The second office, on the Play del Cura, is not open as long and received 16% of the queries, mostly from tourists in
Dutch enquiries remained around the same. The touchscreen, that is available to use when the office is closed on a Sunday, was also in demand. This was consulted 3,093 times during July and August. The languages requested included 44% Spanish, 32% English, 17.7% French and 5.8% German. The hotel occupation rates for three and four star hotels increased by around 5/6% in comparison with the same period

In August 2016 consumption was 3,115,817 in comparison to 3,349,628 this August. An increase of 7.50%. Similar increases were recorded for the collection of waste. The level of rubbish produced has stretched the services this year even more than ever. The town council has had to request that more lorries of refuse be accepted at different treatment plants than anticipated. This is an additional cost that the town hall had not counted on. The town council lament that the Vega Baja does not have sufficient treatment plants of its own. For those involved in the tourist trade the increased figures will come as a relief and bode well for future years. For those using the N332 every day, it’s a different story. Suzanne O’Connell

Raising money for suicide awareness It’s the perfect combination if you can raise money for a worthwhile cause whilst having fun. That’s what a group of volunteers have been doing on behalf of the Samaritans in Spain. They took part in a sponsored Zip Wire at La Rufeta to raise money for suicide awareness. The Samaritans in Spain receive many calls from people who are experiencing such emotional distress that they are considering taking their own life. Through encouraging people to talk and giving time, the volunteers who are on the end of the Samaritan’s help line provide a much needed listening ear. However, it’s also important
that society generally is aware and understands the issues associated with suicide, depression and mental health generally. There is still stigma around the subject that can prevent people from coming forward when they really need to. Events such as this are hoped to raise awareness generally amongst the public. On this occasion it was organised by Maureen and Colin Smith of San Luis, Torrevieja. Those participating included Maureen, Colin, Johnno, Kath and Alex. Recording the event for posterity and a little publicity too was Warren Bradley. Thanks go to all those who took part on the day as

31st International choral festival On 22nd and 23rd September it will be the 31st international coral festival in Torrevieja. News of the event was published on 13th September by Domingo Soler. The festival will take place in the Virgen del Carmen cultural centre and there will be eight choirs talking part. Seven of these are Spanish, three of them from Torrevieja, one from Salamanca, two from Granada and another from Tenerife. There will also be a choir from Italy participating.
The type of music will include a full range from habanera to jazz and pop rock, including numbers from Queen with drums and an electric guitar. The choral tradition is an important one for Torrevieja which also hosts each year the Habaneras competition that is broadcast all over Spain and further afield too. There will also be opportunity to take part in a vocal technique workshop in the Palacio de Música delivered by Javier Busto.
The opening ceremony will take place on 22nd September at 9pm in the Virgen del Carmen cultural centre. There will be four choirs performing, including three from Torrevieja. On Saturday 23rd September will be the vocal workshop at 11am and the closing ceremony will be at 9pm, again in the Virgen del Carmen. During this, the four remaining choirs will sing including the Women’s quintet Le Nuvole, from Italy. Suzanne O’Connell

Rojales school finally opens after ten years After more than a decade of demands from parents, teachers and the general local community, the youngsters of Rojales finally have a new school to lean in. More than 30 Town Hall cleaners and workers were busy the previous week to make sure the new building could open without any problems last Monday. Several councillors attended the opening and checked all the work had been done properly. “Today is a very exciting day and thanks to the work of many people the term has started normally,” said Councillor Tatiana Cañizares. She also praised the efforts of the teachers and the Town Hall to make this opening a reality, and thanked the Valencian Government for making the investment to build the new school, which was started a year ago and cost €2,785,000. The school management team said
they are planning to hold an open day so the public can see the facilities, which are state-of-the-art. The school has been a long time in coming and has seen many a setbacks. Ximo Puig, president of the Council of the Valencian Community, visited Rojales during the election year and promised the school would be built imminently, and was then accused by the local community of nothing but empty promises when post-election nothing happened. The site of the new school has seen several ‘first stones’ laid and the PP Mayor promised ‘actions, not words’ but still the years rolled by with no new school. Meanwhile, the children of Rojales were subjected to attending a rundown and illequipped school with falling masonry, lead pipes, no heating or air-conditioning and struggling to accommodate more than three times the number of children it was built for.
False-alarm bomb scare at Sagrada Familia The Spanish police temporarily evacuated Barcelona's Sagrada Familia church and nearby businesses early last week after a van parked nearby prompted a bomb scare which they said turned out to be a "false alarm". Catalonia's regional police force, the Mossos d'Esquadra, cordoned off the area and sent a bomb squad to check out a ‘suspicious’ van with two people inside it that was parked near the church. They announced the operation on Twitter and
asked for cooperation, advising local residents to stay indoors, but shortly after the announcement said that no explosives had been found. “It is a false alarm. Situation has been normalised in Sagrada Familia,” the regional police force said in a Twitter message. They also added that no arrests had been made. Police had closed a nearby metro station while they inspected the van and closed several nearby streets as part of the operation.
Spanish media said that locals and tourists were ordered away from cafe and bar terraces and told to take refuge inside premises. The incident comes less than a month after 16 people were killed in two attacks using vehicles and knives in Barcelona and a nearby seaside resort. The attacks were claimed by the Islamic State group. The Sagrada Familia church, designed by Spanish architect Antoni Gaudi, attracts millions of tourists from around the world every year.

The Bleeding Heart vine (Clerodendrum thomsoniae), also known as Bleeding Glory Bower or Bag Flower, is a beautiful, twining, tropical plant with showy red and white flowers. Bleeding Heart is a sprawling vine-like shrub that can be trimmed to just about any desirable size. It produces tons of clusters of white heartshaped flowers with a red, tear-like attachment at the base of the flower. Flowers are seen year round, but more during the warmer months of the year. The Bleeding Heart vine is covered with large, evergreen leaves and climbs rapidly. The plant's stems can get 12-15 ft (4-5 m) long, climbing without tendrils, suckers or root hairs, but rather by twining through and around its support. You should provide a structure for it to climb on or keep it trimmed as a shrub.
you plant outdoors you can add slow release fertilizer to the soil. The Bleeding Heart vine will need to be pruned during the winter months for best growth during the warmer months. Prune it in midFebruary just before new growth emerges. You’ll want to remove old, overcrowded shoots - particularly any that are too long for your taste. Plus, the flowers grow on new wood so don’t be afraid to cut the plant back severely. This plant is frost tender and may die back in winter. If plants are damaged by frost, burnt tips and leaves should be left on the plant until spring and then cut away to make way for vigorous new growth. The Bleeding Heart vine is a plant that produces some great flowers for cutting. You won’t have to feel guilty about cutting flowers from this vine, as it will actually help it to become healthier and produce more flowers. You’ll enjoy the heaviest flower crop from early spring through mid-summer and then it will slow a bit into the fall.
CULTURE
The Bleeding Heart vines are popular ornamentals, cultivated widely for their distinctive and beautiful flowers. It can be kept pruned into a shrub, or given support and allowed to scramble like a vine. It does not spread as much as some, and is thus a good choice for a restricted support like a doorway arch or container trellis, and not such a good candidate to cover a fence or an arbor. This plant is great for growing in containers, especially in hanging baskets. It also makes a fine houseplant anywhere, so if your climate is too cold, grow it indoors. In captivation - your living room, say, or your kitchen - it’s likely to stay under three feet. When properly sited and cared for, it will be full with lush foliage and branches that spill over the edge of whatever container you choose.
This is a tropical plant that will take some care to flourish. First thing to do is to choose a sheltered, sunny location to grow your Bleeding Heart vine - it needs heat and a lot of sunlight to reach its full potential. Best results occur with morning sun and afternoon shade. The soil will have to be high quality and have the ability to drain well. It should be loose and not packed. If planting in a pot, make sure the pot has holes on the bottom so that water can drain through. You don’t want water settling around the root, as this will cause root rot. When you have placed the plant in a container and covered the roots with soil you can add a bit of mulch around it, being careful not to let the mulch come into contact with the plant itself. After planting the Bleeding Heart vine make sure that you water the plant well. This is important until the plant is well established. Always use lukewarm water and not cold water, as a frigid water temperature may put your plant into shock. It is also important that you never let the soil dry out, which will kill the plant. Bleeding heart likes high humidity and a moist, but not soggy, soil. You will want to feed your plant about every two weeks while growing. Use a gentle liquid fertilizer that you can add to the water. If

The metropolitan area spans approximately 3,500 km2 (1,400 sq mi) and includes six provinces called wilayats. Known since the early 1st century CE as an important trading port between the west and the east, Muscat was ruled by various indigenous tribes as well as foreign powers such as the Persians, the Portuguese Empire and the Ottoman Empire at
various points in its history. A regional military power in the 18th century, Muscat's influence extended as far as East Africa and Zanzibar. As an important port-town in the Gulf of Oman, Muscat attracted foreign tradesmen and settlers such as the Persians and the Balochis. Since the ascension of Qaboos bin Said as Sultan of Oman in 1970, Muscat has experienced rapid infrastructural development that has led to the growth of a vibrant economy and a multi-ethnic society.

Geography The Tropic of Cancer passes south of the area. It is bordered to its west by the plains of the Al Batinah Region and to its east by Ash Sharqiyah Region. The interior plains of the Ad Dakhiliyah Region border Muscat to the south, while the Gulf of Oman forms the northern and western periphery of the city. The water along to coast of Muscat runs deep, forming two natural harbours, in Muttrah and Muscat. The Western Al Hajar Mountains run through the northern coastline of the city. Volcanic rocks are apparent in the Muscat area, and are composed of serpentine and diorite, extending along the Gulf of Oman coast for ten or twelve 16 kilometres from the district of Darsait to Yiti. Plutonic rocks constitute the hills and mountains of Muscat and span approximately 30 miles (48 km) from Darsait to Ras Jissah. These igneous rocks consists of serpentine, greenstone and basalt, typical of rocks in southeastern regions of the Arabian Peninsula.
History Evidence of communal activity in the area around Muscat dates back to the 6th millennium BCE in Ras al-Hamra, where burial sites of fishermen have been found. The graves appear to be well formed and indicate the existence of burial rituals. South of Muscat, remnants of Harappan pottery indicate some level of contact with the Indus Valley Civilisation. Muscat's notability as a port was acknowledged as early as the 1st century CE by the Greek geographer Ptolemy, who referred to it as Cryptus Portus (the Hidden Port), and by Pliny the Elder, who called it Amithoscuta. The port fell to a Sassanid invasion in the 3rd century CE, under the rule of Shapur I, while conversion to Islam occurred during the 7th century. Muscat's importance as a trading port continued to grow in the centuries that followed, under the influence of the Azd dynasty, a local tribe. With the assistance of the British, Qaboos bin Said put an end to the Dhofar uprising and consolidated disparate tribal territories. He renamed the country the Sultanate of Oman (called Muscat and Oman hitherto), in an attempt to end to the interior's isolation from Muscat. Qaboos enlisted the services of capable Omanis to fill positions in his new government, drawing from such corporations as Petroleum Development Oman (PDO). Mina'a Sultan Qaboos, Muscat's main trading port, is a trading hub between the Persian Gulf, the Indian subcontinent and the Far East with an annual volume of about 1.6 million tons.

Our mother passed away 7 months ago, and last week we heard through her solicitor that she had another child out of wedlock when she was 17. My two sisters and I are totally shocked, because Mum never mentioned the existence of this child (a son), and as far as we are aware, our father never knew about the child either. Mum had the child adopted, and now he has made contact. We are so upset that our mother did not confide in us years ago, and only now have we been made aware. We don’t know what to do.
I’ve looked after my elderly parents for years. They are fairly fit and can do things for themselves, but have relied on me for a lot, and so don‘t do much, when they could. I suppose it’s my fault. Now I have met a man for the first time in my life. I am 49. He wants us to move 20 miles away and live together. This will largely take me away from my parents. I want to begin a new life with my man, but still need to look out for my mother and father for shopping and trips in the car.
This must have come as a great shock to you all. I would suggest you take some time to come to terms with this knowledge. Ask your mother’s Solicitor to answer the letter to your half brother, in terms of it having been a bolt out of the blue, and that you didn’t know of his existence until recently. Then ask for some time to digest the situation. You can then take as long as you need to decide if you want to meet up.

Catalan independence vote still in turmoil Catalonia’s regional government is moving forward with its planned independence referendum despite legal moves

Law enforcement agencies have been instructed to seize all material that could help organize the vote, making it unclear how the secessionist coalition that rules the northeastern region will deal with the logistics of the vote on 1st October. “We have more than 6,000 ballot boxes already. I do not see how the state can stop it,” said regional premier Carles Puigdemont in an interview with the Financial Times on 25th August. What the leader of the Junts pel Sí coalition did not clarify is how he acquired them or where he is keeping them. The ballot boxes are a key element in the battle between Madrid and
While nobody knows what the ballot boxes look like, it is possible to assume what they do not look like. The referendum regulations approved by the Catalan government on 7th September have omitted a clause applied to all previous official voting procedures in Catalonia, establishing that the boxes have to be transparent as a guarantee against fraud. The informal independence ballot held on 9th November, 2014, used cardboard boxes made by convicts. This time however, Puigdemont has promised his partners in CUP, the tiny anti-capitalist party whose support is pivotal to the secessionist agenda, that proper acrylic glass boxes would be used for the referendum. But this
turned out to be difficult as a contract for 8,000 boxes was put out to tender, but there were no bidders. There are other differences from the way past votes have been organised. The rules for 1st October do not include voting booths to allow people to make their choice in secret. Instead, the text indicates that “a space” will be reserved for this purpose. This is no small issue in a referendum that has divided Catalan society and where pro-independence campaigners have dominated the debate. There are several other issues that could be challenged in the courts, were it not for the fact that the entire Catalan referendum law has already been placed on hold by Spain’s Constitutional Court following a complaint by the central government. One of these issues is the way the electoral register has been drawn up, using data from 30th March instead of from two months before the scheduled voting day, as is usually the norm. Another is the fact that regional officials, not local ones, will be in charge of putting together the staff at each polling place. Above all, no provisions are made for appealing the outcome of the vote in court.

Orihuela offers free bus routes for ‘Day Without Cars’ The Councillor for the Environment, Miguel Angel Fernandez, has outlined the activities that have been organised to commemorate the upcoming celebration of Mobility Week. Ricardo Sigüenza, owner of the Sigüenza bus company, and José Manuel Torres, representative of the BBT Passion Cyclist Club participated in the presentation as both organisations have heloed to develop the programming. Today, Tuesday 19th September, 7.30pm at the Campus of Las Salesas, there will be a speech given by Professor Jorge Olcina on mobility, transport and climate change. “Professor Olcina is a great climate change expert who will give us an important perspective to reflect on how we are taking care of our environment,” the Councillor explained. Friday 22nd September has been heralded the ‘Day Without Cars’ and on this day, in conjunction with Bus Sigüenza, the buses that run through the municipality will be free. This initiative was introduced last year
and proved a great success. Councillor Fernandez said: “We encourage all residents to leave their cars at home and use public transport for their travel, and to collaborate in this initiative.” The free routes will be: the line of three Bridges, La Aparecida and Raiguero de Bonanza; the Molins line; the line of La Murada, La Matanza and Virgen del Camino; and the line of Arenva and Hurchillo; all destinations to Orihuela. On Saturday, September 23rd at 10.30am, the ‘Use the bike’ event will take place at the Glorieta Gabriel Miró, and the tour will be organised by volunteers from the Club Ciclista BBT Passion. Jose Manuel Torres, secretary of the Club, went deeper into the details of the route, which “will be approximately 6.5 km, will cross the town of Orihuela, and all participating children will be presented with a souvenir at the end the event”. The Department of Environment is encouraging residents to participate in these activities, aimed at raising

In addition to the activities outlined above, the City of Orihuela will be undertaking other actions that contribute to the improvement of the environment. As a second measure will be carried out starting next year; the modification of the municipal tax of Mechanical Traction Vehicles, for the application of a bonus to owners of electric vehicles. In this way, the Government Team seeks to promote the use of this type of vehicle which offers less pollution and more benefits for the care of the environment and to encourage vehicle owners to make the change. The idea of joining funds together to buy something more substantial sounds great, and creating your own type of “timeshare” seems extremely appealing, but it’s not all a bed or roses. Over the years, I’ve had my fair share of buyers that jointly purchase property, with either their close friends or family, only to find out later, that it was one of the worst decisions they made. It all started out great, but in the end, not only couldn’t they agree on dividing their time spent in the mutual home equally, but couldn’t agree on furnishing style, or who would pay for what, when things needed replacing! If you are still keen to purchase a property with another family, try creating your own little “community fee” between you. That way, if anything needs replacing or repainting, noone will have to begrudge putting their hand in their pocket. One major problem that could, and I’ve seen happen, is when one party wants or needs to sell the mutual home, and the other does not. Obviously, this could be a major hurdle, as forcing someone to sell, can be very costly and very unpleasant.
If I still haven’t dissuaded you, then the absolute best way to protect yourself, is to put everything you agree on, IN WRITING with a Solicitor. The same applies if you are including family members on the Title Deeds. Think long term first, before including any “in-law’s” on your purchase. You may think you have a good relationship, well maybe you really do, right now anyway, but no-one knows what’s in the future, and there’s nothing worse than having to pay off your daughter’s ex-husband, for example, to have his name removed from your Title Deeds. Again this can be a very costly experience. If you’re buying a property, and putting it in your loved one’s name, there is a *clause in Spain called “usufructo.” This directly translates into English as “usufruct.” Simply meaning, that whoever you appoint, has the right to enjoy the use and advantages of a property that doesn’t belong to them. Using this “usufructo” clause, will allow you to remain in the property for as long as you wish, and even though you are not the legal registered owner, no-one can force you to vacate the home until you are ready to say Adios! So if you decide to buy a home with someone other than your immediate partner, it is a logical business deal, and make sure everything is agreed upfront and in writing. Look at it as a type of “prenuptial” agreement, before tying this deal together! And if the other party doesn’t like it, and asks why you want everything in writing, tell them, because Rebecca told you to! *With any legal matters regarding property law in Spain, it is always best to seek the advice of a local lawyer. Children’s book published for local British author British author Steven Dale, who lives in Santa Pola, is celebrating having his first children’s book published. Planet Mirth Adventures One, by the Port Talbot-born author, has been published recently by Austin Macauley. How exciting would it be if you could explore a world where you could meet a chocolate crocodile, or where toys can be found growing on trees? The planet of Mirth comes to life through the dreams of a little girl named Mia, with a collection of gnomes guiding her through the wonderful sights and sounds contained in the book’s five stories. As well as a safari trip, Mia enjoys two celebrations with Mirth's resident gnomes, as well as taking part in exciting competitions; tales which the author hopes will spark the imagination of any child or the young-atheart. Orihuela Local Police trained in defensive shooting Orihuela Local Police officers have been specially trained recently in defensive shooting in city and urban situations. In this training, which took place at the Headquarters of the Local Police in Orihuela, was focused on showing suitable measures for the management of firearms in urban environment and was 20-hour long course. The Councillor for Citizen Safety and Security, Mariola Rocamora, stressed the importance of having a properly trained police force. The Councillor said that “Prioritising the security of the citizens of Orihuela and, of course, that of the officers themselves is the most important aspect,” whilst also stressing that with this training the action and intervention of officers will be more effective in serious situations.. For several years the Local Police Headquarters of Orihuela and the Centre for Research in the Use of the Force TDPE® have collaborated closely in the training of its staff and others throughout the area. Through the organisation specialised
courses in a variety of topics both legal and operational have been given. Mariola Rocamora continued: “The City of Orihuela through the Department of Security, together with the Police Headquarters are committed to the

professionalism of local police officers, while also giving the opportunity for them to participate in training with different police forces, including military command of special operations. “ The course was also attended by officers of the National Police Corps and the MOE and trained under an expert in
the use of force, Emilio Bolea, director of the TDPE® Center with the support of the shooting instructors of the Local Police of Orihuela. The course was divided into different sub-areas in order of importance such as legal training on the use of firearms, biomechanics and the safe handling of weapons and practical weapons handling and real ammunition shooting. The focus was on training officers in the knowledge and application the right use and application of firearms and the psycho-physiological conditions that determine if it’s safe use them in an urban environment. The Councillor added: “This included operational management in the Headquarters itself through a set security protocol for the safe handling of the weapons in installations. The course has a academic methodology based on the demonstration and practice of effectiveness through a system that is based on more than 20 years of experience.” Mireille Toddington

Low mortgages remain in Spain

Fears of mortgages and loans in Spain getting more expensive this autumn have proven unfounded – the Central European Bank (BCE) has opted to keep interest rates at zero per cent. This historic low has been in place since March 2016, although recent talks seemed to hint that the eurozone interest rate, or Euribor, would go up from September now that the common currency area is out of recession. But homeowners can breathe a sigh of relief – although investors who rely on asset interest for their income will have to wait a while longer before they can enjoy new riches. In fact, deposit interest will carry on sitting at -0.40 perent, or negative figures, but this does not mean banks will deduct funds instead of paying interest and anyone who

Loan interest, including mortgages, will remain at 0.25 per cent, and current home loans range from around 1.5 per cent to 4 per cent on top of the Euribor, making them cheaper than ever for those who pay them in euros. The difference between Euribor highs of late 2007 and early 2008, when the rate skyrocketed to over 5.5 per cent for the first time ever, are huge – on a typical 35-year, €100,000 mortgage, the last nine years or over 5 per cent drop would have seen the homeowner save around €170 a month. Meanwhile, the BCE will continue to buy bonds on existing debt at the current rate of €60 billion a month until the end of this year at least or possibly longer if it considers it necessary to do so. Spain's government says it hopes the BCE's
official interest rates will ‘remain at current levels for a prolonged period’, or a length of time which ‘vastly exceeds its net bond-buying forecast timescale’. This timescale, although only fixed until January, may well continue indefinitely until inflation levels meet the Bank's objectives. Year-on-year Eurozone inflation in August rose to 1.5 per cent, compared with 1.3 per cent in July – its highest climb since April, according to the EU's statistics agency Eurostat. But it is still far short of the BCE's price stability criteria, which needs inflation to be around 2 per cent.
Stability Underlying Eurozone inflation – net of energy prices and the cost of fresh food produce, due to the volatile
nature of both markets – remained stable in August at 1.3 per cent. In the meantime, the Eurozone economy registered growth of 2.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2017 based upon Q2 of 2016, and a healthy hike on the 2 per cent seen in the first quarter of 2017, based upon GDP figures released recently by Eurostat. Between April and June, the GDP for the 19-country common currency bloc, which includes Spain, rose by 0.6 per cent on that of Q1 of 2017 – higher than the 0.5 per cent rise seen in the first three months of the year. Last month, the BCE confirmed that the Eurozone is finally out of recession, exactly a decade after it started midway through 2007. Spain is leading Eurozone growth, and is officially the fastestexpanding economy in the single currency area.

Spain cooperates with British military Spain has allowed British military helicopters to use Spanish ground as a stopover on the way to Gibraltar. Last weekend four RAF helicopters and one from the Royal Navy stopped over in two Spanish airports to refuel and fly in Spanish airspace to Gibraltar. The Spanish Ministry for Foreign Matters and Cooperation authorised the British arrivals which are then communicated to the Spanish Defence Ministry which controls the airspace. Four heavy transport helicopters CH-47 Chinook and one Agusta Westland AW101 Merlin Mk3 which
used the airports at San Sebastian and San Pablo in Sevilla for refuelling. The British operation RUMAN is supplying humanitarian assistance to the Caribbean, personnel and materials using C-17 transport planes, A400M and Voyager of the RAF and British warships such as HMS Ocean which was docked in Gibraltar with the RFA (Royal Fleet Auxiliary) Mounts Bay with 40 marines and engineers on board, which has been in the Caribbean since July at the start of the hurricane season.

Free tests for early detection of prostate cancer The Hospital Quirónsalud Torrevieja, has launched a free campaign for the early detection of prostate cancer. This initiative consists of a free PSA analysis followed by an appointment for a consultation with urology. Available to men living in the Vega Baja area of Alicante (Nationals and non nationals) from 45 years of age, if there is a family history, from 40 years of age. The campaign runs until 22nd September if you are interested you can obtain further information by telephone: 966 92 57 70, or by email prevencion.trv@quironsalud.es or through the webpage http://www.quironsalud.es/torrevieja/es . A prior appointment is essential to avail of the free test and it is not necessary to come on an empty stomach. New employment scheme in Orihuela Orihuela has taken on 62 new workers through a year-long employment plan for the under 30s. The Mayor of Orihuela, Emilio Bascuñana, and the councillors for Employment and Human Resources, Víctor Valverde and Rafael Almagro, welcomed the 62 new workers who join the City through two types of subsidies for the recruitment of qualified and unskilled young people, within the framework of the National System of Youth Guarantee. Cop stabbed to death arresting murder suspect A police officer has died in Valencia after being stabbed whilst arresting a suspect in the ‘body in a bag’ case in the city. Blas Gámez, 51, a sub-inspector in the National Police homicide unit, sustained two knife-wounds in the heart during the scuffle on the C/ Sueca and, despite paramedics’ attempts to revive him, lost his life within minutes. Property prices continue to soar across Spain Property prices across the coast are expected to soar by 5percent next year thanks to increasing demand. It comes after Solvia, the property division of Sabadell bank, forecast an average increase in house prices of 7.3 percent across the country by 2020, whilst Bankinter, predicts a 5 percent increase in 2018 alone. Regions with the strongest demand and economies such as Catalonia and Madrid are likely to see the biggest rises and the Solvia forecast suggests increases
of 11 percent and 14 percent respectively. It added that sales are likely to be strongest in Barcelona, Madrid, Sevilla, Alicante and Malaga, where demand continues to be high. Russian arrest for Spanish tourist who kept make-up bag she found A holidaymaker from Sevilla is in prison in St Petersburg accused of stealing a makeup bag that she found at the airport. María del Carmen R.S., 54, was with one of her daughters, Lola, at the time as they waited for a flight to Moscow. Lola said she and her mum found the makeup bag on the floor five days into their holiday in Russia and asked as many people as they could around them whether it was theirs. As everyone said no, María del Carmen stuffed it in her own bag. It contained cosmetics with a retail value of around 7,000 roubles, or about €100. María del Carmen apparently took the spectacles out of the bag and left it, along with the empty bag itself, on top of a vending machine, but pocketed the makeup. Police officers nearby approached her and asked if the items were hers, and she explained she had found it dumped on the floor. They were both taken to the police station, missing their flight and, as the police only spoke Russian and were unable to understand either Spanish or English – which Lola and her mother both speak – they ended up having to wait from 10.00 until
20.00 for an interpreter. Then, their statements were not taken until 03.00 the next morning. María del Carmen was held in custody, and Lola was released and after she found herself a hotel in St Petersburg she immediately got in touch with the Spanish Consulate. After two days, María del Carmen was taken to a prison, since her having kept the items in the makeup bag is considered a crime as the value of the goods found was over 5,000 roubles, or €80, and means she could face up to five years in a Russian jail. Lola has had to return to Spain via Moscow and appointed a Russian solicitor, who charges 50,000 roubles, or €800 a month.
Lola says the family is ‘seriously struggling to pay the lawyer's bill’, since although she is one of María del Carmen's four children – three daughters and a son, all adults two of them are out of work and live with their mother. Lola also explained that if their mother has to stay in Russia for too long – she is likely to have to remain in jail for at least two months - she could end up losing her job at home in Spain. Lola is pushing for her mother to be released and placed under house arrest in a rented apartment in St Petersburg, since if she had been resident in Russia, she would have been released until the trial went ahead.

FACIAL FILLERS Facial fillers help to reshape the facial contour and correct fine wrinkles around the eyes and lips. Fillers are one of the star treatments in beauty clinics. Mercadona’s 5e face cream worth 85e National supermarket chain Mercadona has admitted that its own-branded €5 face cream is exactly the same as another which retails in perfumeries at €60 – except for the smell. The anti-wrinkle ‘Sisbela’ cream, a brand sold exclusively in the grocery store chain owned by Valencia-based Juan Roig and manufactured by the company Star Healthcare, is now mostly out of stock after the creators revealed it is the same as another product it makes, called Alain. Officially, Alain anti-ageing cream sells for €84.90, although it can be found in cosmetics shops for €60 – which is still 12 times the price it sells for in Mercadona under the other name. The secret in the price difference is that Mercadona buys in huge quantities, meaning the reduction in its profit from individual sales effectively means it earns more because of the volume shifted. “Selling 400 units is not the same as selling 5,000,” Star Healthcare told Catalunya-based daily newspaper La Vanguardia. “But it's exactly the same product,” the firm stressed.
Mercadona said: “It offers the same activity and level of effectiveness; the only thing different about it is the scent.” Once again, Mercadona's star cosmetic product shows that it is not always necessary to break the bank to obtain the best possible skincare régime. For several years now, consumer giant OCU has rated moisturisers from every price range and consistently found that the Cien Q10 collection sold in cut-price German supermarket chain Lidl is the most effective of all. This retails at just €2.99 and, when the
OCU first revealed its findings, shoppers were literally queuing outside their local branches of Lidl to get their hands on a jar of it. The OCU report led to the Cien Q10 brand being sold out in hours and Lidl having to constantly replenish stocks, putting up notices advising it had run out but that more was on the way. Now Mercadona’s €5 Sisbela cream has turned out to be the same as a top designer version but with different packaging, the 'Cien Q10 effect' has returned.
Single jab could replace all childhood vaccines A technology is currently being developed that could eventually see every childhood vaccine delivered in a single injection. A team of US researchers has come up with a solution stores the vaccine in microscopic capsules that release the initial dose and then boosters at specific times. The approach has been shown to work in mouse studies, described in the journal Science. The researchers say the technology could help patients around the world.

A team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology has designed a new type of micro-particle that could combine everything into a single jab. The particles look like miniature cups that are filled with vaccine and then sealed with a lid. Crucially, the design of the cups can be altered so they break down and spill their contents at just the right time. One set of tests showed the contents could be released at exactly nine, 20 and 41 days after they were injected into mice. Other particles that last for hundreds of
days have also been developed, the researchers say. The approach has not yet been tested on patients.

Any other industry would be dragged before the courts for miss selling their service, but the internet industry seems to be lawless and unregulated out here in Spain. I would suggest going to www.speedtest.net and checking your speed over a few days and present the results to your provider and then give them a few weeks to resolve the problem, but I wouldn’t get too excited. Shop around with other providers in your area and maybe chat with your neighbours regarding who they use and their experience with their service. I think what you have done here is a very easy mistake where you have used the .com ending instead of the .co.uk. Basically what happens here is that Chrome is trying to be helpful and has detected you are in Spain and returning what it thinks are most relevant search results, but by using the .co.uk extension you are directing everything to UK based sources. This works with most websites and Amazon & EBay are great examples. For those of you who need a reminder of how to set your homepage; go to the settings section of Google Chrome (click on the three dots in the top right corner) and change the “on startup” and “search” sections to google.co.uk (or .ie for Ireland) and you should find you get a lot more relevant results from any searches. What is Pegasus?
W
e often refer to “Pegasus” as the eye in the sky, watching over the roads and catching offenders who are speeding, carrying out dangerous moves, using their mobile or not wearing a seatbelt, for example, but what exactly is Pegasus? Often thought to be the helicopters, Pegasus is actually the name of the equipment carried, not the aircraft itself. Some of the DGT helicopters are not fitted with Pegasus, and are just used for traffic monitoring. The helicopter is positioned above the vehicle to maintain visual contact. The pilot and cameraman operate in co-ordination. It is equipped with two cameras: one, panoramic, follows the vehicle and captures its speed; the other, with telephoto lens, reads the registration number. Starting from the position of the helicopter, a GPS calculates the co-ordinates of the vehicle. A laser rangefinder measures the exact distance between the helicopter and the vehicle. With the successive positions, the speed is determined. The
system measures every 3 seconds and the average speed is calculated. Speeds between 80 and 360kph can be detected. The offence is recorded and transmitted telematically. How Pegasus Works The aerial radar has an advantage: it's more selective and allows observation of drivers' conduct, identifying risky
behaviours. Pegasus can operate from a height of 300 metres and from a distance of one kilometre away from its target. The purpose of the system is to recognise the geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude) of the vehicle it's checking in order to calculate its speed. Firstly, the helicopter is positioned with extraordinary precision, by way of various mechanisms (gyroscopes and speedometers) and a computer programme added to the
surveillance cameras. Next, a laser measures the distance between the helicopter and the vehicle every three seconds. With these data, the successive movements of the vehicle and its speed can be determined to record the offence. With the offence confirmed, a frame from the video recording is sent as evidence telematically to the Centre for Automated Complaints Processing (ESTRADA), where the incident will be handled. This also includes anticipated criminal offences, for which a Guardia civil patrol can be contacted immediately from the helicopter.
