Torrential rain across Spain has wreaked havoc and the Southern Costa Blanca has had more than its fair share.

Tues 20th December - 26th 2016

THE RAIN IN SPAIN

M

ore than 15mm of rain fell in just one hour on Sunday which added to the heavy rainfall experienced on Saturday. The whole of the Coast was placed on Orange alert over the weekend, beginning on Friday evening, which was then extended into the early part of this week. So far the deluge has officially claimed the life of one person in the province of Alicante – an elderly man who drowned in Finestrat - and has forced emergency services to work around the clock carrying out rescue operations. The regions of Murcia and Valencia

have been the hardest hit, with the regional government in the latter warning residents to avoid going out in their cars unless absolutely necessary. All schools across the Municipalities of Orihuela, Torrevieja and more were closed on Monday after the emergency committees held an emergency meeting on Sunday. Several roads were closed by Policia Local including parts of the N340, the San Miguel to Algorfa road through Los Perez, access to Playa Flamenca beach near the Town Hall and several roads were flooded but just passable. In Torrevieja, there were images on social media of heavy seas and waves spilling on to paseos and over walls. As usual, the roads in many parts of the town were flooded, not an unusual sight. However, the length of time during which rain continued to fall was out of the ordinary. Continued on page 3

Age Concern update Age Concern would like to let everyone know that their centre at La Siesta will be closed for the festive season and will re-open on Monday 9th January 2017. They would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

There has been a change to the date for the volunteers day at the Palacio del Deportes (Sports Palace). It’s now the 28th December from 4pm until 10pm. It was previously advertised as being the 20th December. Charitable organisations of all nationalities have been invited to take part and provide examples of what volunteering for them entails. Potential volunteers are being encouraged to come along and see where they could lend a helping hand. There will be free calendars, shirts and volunteer vests available.

Charity sports event The Torrevieja Sports schools will be holding a charity day on Wednesday 21st December. It’s an open door event during which it is hoped to collect as much food as possible for redistribution. Different voluntary, charity groups will be responsible for handing out the food to families who need it. During the day, people can view displays by different clubs and take part Continued on page 4

The rain in Spain The rainfall brought with it difficulties to Torrevieja’s roads. Four people were slightly injured in a traffic accident involving two cars at the junction of la Avenida del Maestro Francisco Casanovas with Calle Almudena. Emergency services were called as passengers were believed to be trapped in one of the vehicles. Ambulances, a fire engine and police cars attended the scene. However, the injuries were less serious than expected. The situation was particularly bad on roads such as the Avenida de las Cortes Valencianas where the water accumulates even when the rain is not torrential. Extra police were on duty around the town and ready to answer calls for help. Some other streets were blocked off including the zone around the ITV building near Torreta 2 and Avenida Delfina Viudes. It was the combination of both the wind and rain that was responsible for perhaps one of the biggest collapses in Torrevieja, that of the Pergola in the main square of La Mata. The pergola, which provides shade during the summer on the Encarnación Puchol, was torn up by the

wind and luckily there were no injuries. Police ordered the removal of cars from the street leading to the paseo following its collapse. The area is now cordoned off until further notice preventing people from walking through and local businesses will not be able to open until the area is safe. Locals were astonished on Sunday as the beach bar on La Zenia beach was in danger of being washed away and needed a team of municipal workers with diggers to try and save it. Around three inches of rain (7.5 centimetres, or 75 litres per square metre) was registered in 12 hours in Valencia province, whilst winds of between 60 and 75 kilometres per hour (38-47mph) have been registered in Elche. The alerts were still in place at the time of going to press, but it is understood the Met office will begin to fade them out from Monday evening (19th December). It is believed to be the worst weather for 30 years. Mireille Toddington and Suzanne O’Connell

Noise pollution BITE SIZE NEWS: in Torrevieja Continued from page 3

Torrevieja town hall has carried out the closure of two nightclubs in the town. Both are located on the industrial estate Casa grande which is in Mariano Ruiz Cánovas. They have also closed a well-known restaurant pub on Punta Margalla between the columns and la Curva del Palangre. ‘Love’ is one of the nightclubs affected but it has been authorised to re-open after presenting the necessary documentation. Both Love and Ultra were accused of not providing the paperwork to demonstrate that they are monitoring levels of decibels on their outside terraces. Complaints have been received from

outside drinking parties where young people congregate together in the open air. These have been taking place on areas of land just in front of the clubs and require different legislation for them to be addressed. The ground where they congregate is used for car parking and there are continuous complaints about the amount of rubbish that needs clearing every weekend. The area of land affected borders a petrol station, the water park and some residential areas. A third club in the area, Velice, complies with the outdoor music rules.

in a number of sporting activities themselves at venues across the town. The ‘open door’ is between 9am and 11am and from 5pm until 9pm. There will be the opportunity for participants to take part in classes of fitness and pilates. All you have to do to is to bring a donation of non-perishable food. Sports include rhythmic gymnastics, indoor football, judo, athletics, rowing, basketball, football, handball, hockey and rugby. There will also be a team of veteran footballers, basketball players and handball players to watch. Last time this event was held they collected 2,500 kilos of food. Councillor for Sport, Victor Ferrández, is now hoping to beat this total. The Palacio de los Deportes will be handing out a chocolate drink for everyone at 5.30pm.

neighbours in residential areas la Avenida de Delfina Viudes and Nueva Torrevieja, which are relatively far away but are still being affected. In both cases, the closures were more the result of failure to produce the correct paperwork than violation of sound levels. However it might not just be the nightclubs themselves that are creating the noise. It is believed that sound is also coming from the ‘botellóns’ which are

The third closure is that of the Ruta al Sur. Local residents have complained about the smoke and noise coming from the kitchen’s extractor fans. The town hall followed up the complaint to discover that the business only has a pub licence and not a restaurant one. They have now asked to function only as a restaurant and are looking for town hall approval to be able to re-open their doors in a few days. Suzanne O’Connell

The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón on the 14th December met with others to organise the re-opening of the PROP office in Torrevieja. The office has now been closed for four years since November 2012. The PROP office provides very important services to users. PROP first opened in June of 2009 with one administrator. In 2012, due to local government cuts, the service was removed. Since then there has been no one specifically employed to deal with the requests for registration, Continued on page 5

doubles growth British low-cost airline easyJet has announced that it is planning to start operating 10 new international routes to and from Spain. The company said that the new flights on offer will increase the number of seats available to and from Spain by 11 percent. This equates to 16.4 million in 2017, compared with 14.7 million in 2016.

El Antonio El Antonio is a familiar figure to many people who live in Torrevieja. There have been concerns about his vulnerability for many months and now the latest incidentsees Antonio Martínez Espinosa in hospital. The 58 years old is currently in intensive care in Torrevieja hospital following being hit by a car on 16th December. It is believed that the accident took place at 7pm and Antonio was left lying on the tarmac, unconscious. The local police have been called out to deal with Antonio on numerous occasions. There have been attempts to seek admittance to a care centre but this, to date, has not been possible.

Demands for rail link continue The mayor of Torrevieja, José Manuel Dolón, continues to push for a rail link between Torrevieja and RENFE’s other main lines. Part of the delay in a feasibility study being completed has been the new proposal for a route different to the three originally suggested. However, the mayor believes that this alternative path is the much better option. ‘It will shorten the route, lower costs and avoid the urban and environmental difficulties that the three initial routes would have caused,’ he explains.‘We believe that we have now given a realistic solution and hope that the Minister will see it as a viable, economically feasible project to improve the local infrastructure that would have great social and economic benefit to Torrevieja.’ This proposal would also have implications for Rojales and Los Montesinos and the mayor of both municipalities have agreed with the proposal in principle.

Contracts renewed Councillor Fanny Serrano has announced that the contract for the maintenance and repair of sports facilities has once more been given to the Ferrovial company for €83,940. The airline plans to open a new base in Palma de Mallorca, start operations in two new airports in Granada in southern Spain and La Palma (Canary Islands), and to add a fourth plane to its fleet in Barcelona. Javier Gándara, General Manager of easyJet Spain, said this expansion will create around 150 jobs. The new routes will be Valencia to Hamburg, Valencia to Toulouse, Palma de Mallorca to Venice, Granada to Milan, Granada to Manchester, Bilbao to Paris, Santiago de Compostela to Milan, Menorca to London – and the one of most interest to Costa Blanca People readers – Murcia to London, the company said.

Gándara added that easyJet is not considering increasing routes to and from the Spanish capital, given that a large number of flights from competing airlines already take off from Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport, and there is not the same scope for growth as at other airports. The company closed its base of operations in Madrid two years ago. In the wake of the United Kingdom vote to leave the European Union, easyJet, the fourth most popular airline in Spain, is planning to protect itself against the possible effects of so-called “Brexit” by applying for a license in an EU country so that it can continue operating its European routes, Gándara explained. Currently, more than 50 percent of the company’s flights take off and land outside of the UK. The low-cost carrier also predicts that the cost of tickets will continue to decrease over the next year, despite the possibility of oil prices increasing. When asked about remarks made by Michael O’Leary, CEO of easyJet competitor Ryanair, who recently stated that within the next five or 10 years the Irish airline will be able to give tickets away for free, Gándara was dismissive. O’Leary’s comments, which made reference to the profits budget airlines can make from selling passengers optional extras and airport taxes, were, said the easyJet chief, “free and easy publicity.”

From the prairie to Passchendaele Back in 1976, at the age of 83, with only one arm and the shakes of Parkinson's in his 'good' hand, Fred Knight (1893-1982), decided he wanted to write his own story.

More money will also now be allocated for school transport subsidies for emergency use with an increase of €10,048 from June to December2016 and €15,072 from January to June 2017. A contract has been awarded for the management of the Three Kings parade which comes to less than €60,000. The town council is also involved in three disputes over finances, one by a bank, the second connected to plusvalía and the third brought by a local police officer.

Suzanne O’Connell He used a special apparatus attached to his head and an early electric typewriter. In 1911, aged just 17, Fred left Kent, England to seek work amongst the pioneer farmers of the Canadian prairies. In WW1, he fought with the famed 'Canadian 10th Infantry' and was awarded the Military Medal for his conspicuous bravery. Having come into possession of the original manuscript, his grandson Graham Knight felt that it should be published as Fred would have wished. Well-known local author, Joy Lennick, has adapted Fred's autobiography into this book which reads like a novel. It is appropriate that the book was published on 11th November, Remembrance Day, and that next year, 2017, marks the centenary of Passchendaele, one of the more famous battles of WW1. The book was officially presented to the

British sex offender hiding on Spanish farm is jailed A female sex offender who fled to Spain has been jailed for three years. Leila Kassam, who was convicted for having unlawful sex with a 15-year-old girl, has been sentenced to three years at Blackfriars Crown Court in London. She was also given an additional one-year sentence for arranging and facilitating child sex offences. Pleading guilty at her original trial in March, 32-year old Kassam then fled to Spain in June where she hid out as a farmhand in Ibiza. However, she was recently turned in by the owner of the farm following Crimestoppers appeals. Kassam was extradited to the UK on 9th December. However, her ex-boyfriend Paul Silverthorn, aged 36, who is also wanted in connection to the crimes and remains at large and has been jailed to nine years in his absence. Meanwhile, British paedophile Matthew Sammon has pleaded guilty to sexual offences after hiding out in Fuengirola, on the Costa del Sol. Sammon, aged 45, was wanted for possessing and circulating indecent images of children and will be sentenced in the near future at Southwark Crown Court. A spokesman for the National Crime Agency confirmed that Sammon had pleaded guilty but could not comment further. Remanded in custody in London, he is believed to have been hiding out on the Costa del Sol for almost two years. He was named as part of Operation Captura and was arrested by Spanish police in October after being identified by his employer.

Stagestruck Elton John Cases of donate to to perform scarlet Alzheimer’s in Marbella fever Many local people enjoyed Stagestruck’s pantomime, Aladdin, this year. Those in the audience not only got a night’s entertainment but they have also contributed to some very deserving causes. The theatre group have been able to present €3,000 to the Torrevieja Alzheimer’s Association, €400 to the San Fulgencio branch of the Alzheimer’s Association, €300 to the CardenalBelluga Theatre and €300 to the Butterfly Children Charity. A total of €4,000 altogether. Stagestruck never stand still. Now they are looking forward to their next production which Leigh Humphries is in the process of writing. This will be a musical comedy show to be performed in May 2017 with an ‘Up Pompei’ type theme. In the meantime if you have withdrawal symptoms from your favourite actors you might want to take part in one of their Murder Mysteries that they continue with throughout the year. The money raised from these events in local bars goes towards funding the group’s next performance. Their next Murder Mystery event is at the Marabu Lounge in Quesada on January 17th. If you would like to keep informed of their shows and Murder Mystery dates and venues you should email a request to be added to the Stagestruck Mailing list to Leigh at leigh.humphries58@gmail.com Suzanne O’Connell

British musical superstar Elton John has confirmed that he will perform at next year’s Starlite Music Festival which will be held next summer between 13th July and 26th August in Marbella. His concert will be on the 20th July and he is the latest in a long list of international stars who have confirmed their attendance at this annual musical event.

Elton John, whose achievements include 35 Gold Discs and 25 Platinum and with more than 3,000 concerts under his belt around the world, was last on the Costa del Sol in 2015 when he performed at the Palacio de los Deportes Martín Carpena in Malaga in front of 60,000 people. Soprano Ainhoa Arteta and baritone Dwayne Croft will also be in concert at Starlite, appearing together for the first time in 15 years on the 8th August. They will be accompanied by the Malaga Symphony Orchestra with Marco de Prosperis conducting and will be singing the great classics of Hollywood and Broadway. Suzanne O’Connell

Two cases of scarlet fever have been diagnosed by the health service in children attending the Virgen del Rosario school in Torrevieja. The second case occurred eight days after the illness had first been identified. Scarlet fever is now rare although there has been an increase in reports this decade. It spreads through the respiratory tract and can be treated with antibiotics. It might not be the threat it was to previous generations but the health service is still keen to monitor the situation and the health officials from Valencia are carrying out follow-up work. The illness is infectious but these days is regarded as not too serious and does not have to be declared unless it is a more extensive outbreak. The main symptoms are fever, a red skin rash and a sore throat. It generally affects children between the ages of five and 12 years old. Health experts have confirmed that the first child was diagnosed on the 21st November and the second on the 29th November. Both children had a week off school. The two children came from different classes and were of different ages. Surprise has been registered that the outbreak, although small, wasn’t made public. However, the Valencian authorities state that two cases over this period of time does not constitute an outbreak. Suzanne O’Connell

Spain proposes a 6pm end to working day The Spanish government is proposing a cross-party pact to work toward amending the working day so that it ends at 6.00pm. Speaking sfter an appearance before a Congressional commission, the Employment Minister, Fátima Báñez, told reporters: “Somebody has to take the first step and so I am asking business associations and labour unions for their support.” Báñez’s proposals, the latest installment in a long-running national discussion on working hours seen by many in the country as outdated and familyunfriendly, were outlined in the Popular Party’s election program for the 26th June elections. They would require the support of labour unions and employers: at present, collectivebargaining agreements mean that the country’s 40-hour week is flexible in so much as workers can put in more hours during a certain period, making up for them at a later date. The employment minister also said that rationalising Spain’s working day would also require addressing the issue of returning the country to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT): although a third of Spain’s land mass lies within GMT, it is on

Central European Time. Báñez accepted that moving Spain toward a more compact working day would mean difficulties for smaller businesses: “Companies in some sectors, and particularly small enterprises, would have to negotiate models to make this possible,” she said. Many Spaniards still spend a long time at their place of work compared to their European neighbors, arriving early and then taking an enforced long lunch break before returning to work until 8pm or later. Aside from talking about rationalising the working day, Báñez also mentioned the need for more flexible working hours that could also include working from home. The pact signed with emerging centre-right party Ciudadanos this summer also included proposals to extend paternity leave to four weeks. However, the Socialist Party’s (PSOE) spokesman on the Congressional Employment Commission dismissed Báñez’s proposals as a “joke”. “There is nothing wrong with talking about balance [between work and personal life],” he said, but added that Spain faces more pressing problems, such as the

4.9 million people without work – 19 percent of the working population – and the country’s rate of temporary and shortterm working contracts, which is the highest in the EU. Temporary work has grown since 2006. Contracts lasting a week or less made up 14.7 percent of all those signed in 2006. The following year that proportion grew to 15.1 percent, and has continued to rise ever since. In 2015, the figure for Social Security affiliations tied to contracts lasting less than a week was 24.4 percent. But Báñez said that there had been a 3.24 percent increase in the number of people signing up to the Social Security system, saying that the time had come to address the issue of improving the “quality” of employment, which included job stability, “better salaries” after several years of lower wages in real terms, and work-life balance.

FIVE ARRESTED FOR BURNING PHOTOS OF KING FELIPE Spanish police have arrested five Catalan independence activists for allegedly burning photos of King Felipe VI after refusing to appear before a judge investigating them. The five, all members of Catalan anti-capitalist party CUP, had been summoned to appear before a judge at the National Audience, Spain’s top criminal court, last week but did not show up. They stand accused of insulting the monarchy, which is a crime in Spain, and of also burning Spanish flags during a rally on Catalonia’s national day which was 11th September. Three suspects were arrested in

Barcelona and brought to Madrid to be questioned by a judge, said a spokesman for Catalonia's regional police force. The other two were arrested a day later, last Tuesday near Madrid where they had gone to support their colleagues. The support of the CUP’s ten lawmakers in Catalonia’s local parliament is key to propping up a coalition government of separatist parties in the wealthy northeastern region which has its own distinct language and culture. But apart from wanting independence for the region, they are also strongly against the monarchy. Last Monday, several CUP regional lawmakers tore up photos of King Felipe

in the Catalan parliament. CUP lawmakers and activists also burned photos of the King at rallies held across Catalonia on the Monday night. Since his June 2014 accession to the throne, a symbol of the unity of Spain and its diverse regions, Felipe has issued discreet calls for unity over Catalonia. Catalans have nurtured a separate identity for centuries, with their own language and customs. Their long-standing demands for greater autonomy have been exacerbated by Spain’s recent economic downturn, leaving many resenting the amount of taxes they pay to the central government in Madrid to subsidise poorer regions.

Alicante murder suspected contract killing Evidence in the murder of a leading banker’s widow in Alicante is pointing to a contract killing. Spanish police investigating the murder of the widow of the former president of a failed regional savings bank say they have ruled out robbery as a motive. María del Carmen Martínez, the 72-year-old widow of Vicente Sala, a leading businessman in the city who died in 2011, was shot twice in the head at close range. Her body was found around 7pm at a car showroom owned by her family where she had gone to pick up a Porsche Cayenne. Police say the victim was carrying a large amount of cash and wearing jewelry and would not have been able to offer resistance. They add that the style of the shooting suggested a professional killer was responsible. Sources close to the investigation say for the moment the police are focusing their inquiries on members of the victim’s family. “This was somebody who knew where and how to shoot,” said an unnamed source. Police are reportedly looking into the personal finances of Martínez’s family, as well as if there have been any business disputes. Meanwhile, several family members have given statements. Employees at the car showroom have been questioned and checked for traces of firearms explosive. Martínez was shot in the left side of her head, say

police, as she was about put her vehicle through a car wash. They add that the killer or killers used a pistol, possibly fitted with a silencer. No shots were reported around the time of the killing, although the car showroom is close to a busy main road but the parking area outside the car showroom has no video cameras. Vicente Sala Belló started out in the chemical industry, later moving into property development and car sales. In 1998 he was appointed president of the board of the Caja de Ahorros del Mediterráneo (CAM), a post he held until the age of 70, in 2009. During his final years there he found himself caught up in a power struggle for control of the savings bank between supporters of Eduardo Zaplana and Francisco Camps, the former head of the regional government of Valencia and the premier at the time, respectively. The CAM was taken over by the Bank of Spain in July 2011 after it floundered under the weight of heavy exposure to the Spanish real estate sector, which collapsed in 2008. Sala was subsequently investigated by anticorruption officers over allegations he had links to senior politicians at Alicante City Hall who gave him access to re-zoning plans in the city. By then he was dying from cancer and was never charged.

British zoo sends leopards to Terra Natura Two leopards, Roshan and Udari, are adapting to their new warmer habitat, a meadow of 500 square metres in Murcia, after being transported to Terra Natura as part of the European Endangered Species Program. The two 7-year-old leopards are of different species and were previously housed at the British

zoological park South Lake Safari. The new residents are now getting settled and when the keepers think it is time, a female will be introduced to them with the hope that they will breed. Currently, there are only 1,000 leopards left in the world, hence the high level of protection enforced on the species and the urgent need for

breeding programmes. In total, under the project coordinated by the European Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Terra Natura Murcia is home to nine endangered species. These include: giraffes, colobus monkeys, Brazil monkeys, Kobo antelopes, hippopotamus, bears, wolves, otters and leopards.

WEEKLY EURO UPDATE Fed up The euro zone crisis continues. This week's related to the capital adequacy of Italian banks, lumbered with disproportionately high levels of non-performing loans, and Italy’s problems are very much Europe’s problems. A change of prime minister complicated what was already a tricky problem but it now looks as though the government will chip in €15bn of support to keep the institutions afloat, even though to do so would be to break EU rules. Overall Euroland did not have a great deal to say for itself this week. The number of people in work went up by 1.2% in the year to September while industrial production was incrementally lower in October. The ECB revealed earlier this month it would seek to extend its QE programme to the end of 2017. However, trust in the EU project seems to be in short supply - not only in terms of their weak recovery, but also from a

potentially dysfunctional political landscape. Add this to the Greek crisis still simmering in the background and you have a distinct lack of confidence for Europe into 2017. The Fed raising interest rates on Wednesday could well signal a series of hikes into next year. Some commentators seem to think that the divergence in monetary policy between the US and Europe could before long see parity between their respective currencies. Whilst the Fed rate decision was by far the biggest item on Wednesday's agenda it was not the only one – The UK reported on its employment situation. The number of jobseekers was up by slightly more than expected, and unemployment was steady at just shy of 5%. What is interesting is that average earning s rose by more than double the price of inflation. This may not be the trigger for a hike in interest rates by the BoE, but it certainly is a positive for the UK economy.

IMF tells Spain to raise VAT and revise key spending The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has called on Spain to raise reduced rates of value-added tax (VAT), special taxes and environmental levies, including those on fuel. What’s more, it is also calling on the government to look into the efficiency of spending on education and health. The aim of all of these changes is to bring down the deficit and public debt, the size of which, says the global organisation, is leaving the Spanish economy “highly vulnerable to external disturbances.” We are not suggesting austerity,” said Andrea Shaechter, the IMF economist in charge of monitoring the progress of the Spanish economy, at a press conference at the Bank of Spain last week. “The adjustment can be gradual and be carried out via tax hikes,” he added, using the example of sales tax. “Compared to the rest of Europe, there is a large margin in terms of the reduced rates of Value Added Tax [in Spain], such as the rate collected by restaurants.” In its analysis of the Spanish economy, the institution headed up by Christine Lagarde says that the country’s public deficit could end up coming in above original forecasts. “Immediate attention should be focused on restarting a gradual fiscal consolidation with the aim of setting the high volume of public debt on a steady descending course,” the IMF concludes. As such, it is calling for a structural readjustment of around 0.5 percent of GDP a year – that’s to say, around €5.5 billion. With this change, an “adequate balance between maintaining the economic recovery and the long-term sustainability of public finances” can be found, it argues. The way to do this, according to the IMF, is through tax rises. “Spain can allow itself a rise in revenues,” the report argues. “By gradually reducing the number of VAT exemptions, the amount it collects

would approach those of other EU countries. What’s more, and especially in these times of low energy prices, there is room to raise special taxes and environmental rates, as well as dealing with the inefficiencies and differentiated treatment of the tax system,” it argues. The IMF believes that this would see the tax burden pass from work to consumption, which would help growth.

Temporary employment The IMF also criticised the widespread use of temporary hiring in Spain. While the institution highlighted the robust rhythm of growth in the economy, and praised the reforms already carried out, it emphasised that there is still an excessive duality in the labour market. “The majority of new jobs created are temporary in nature, and the duality in the work market particularly accentuates the volatility of employment and inhibits investment in human capital and the productivity of workers.” To deal with this problem, it recommends reforms that would make indefinite contracts more attractive for employees, as well as offering greater legal guarantees to companies when it comes to layoffs, and allowing greater flexibility in terms of work conditions. The institution believes that Spain’s immediate priority is the creation of jobs among two very vulnerable groups: the long-term unemployed and unskilled youngsters. In the opinion of the IMF, the policies that have been applied to these two groups have had a “limited” impact and there is room for improvement. The IMF encourages regional governments to make a greater effort and for subsidies on hiring to be allocated in a more efficient manner. Shaechter said a more individualised treatment of the long-term unemployed was a priority

Life skills for the young disabled Fourteen disabled youths are taking a PCPI professional training course in gardening and ecological agriculture, set up by the charity ADIS with a grant from the Valencian Government. The young adults, aged 16 to 21 years of age, are being taught at the Superior Polytechnic School Orihuela (EPSO) and are also learning basic maths, language and social sciences during the two year course. The EPSO has two gardens where they can see how to grow fruit and vegetables to then sell in baskets that they prepare themselves and deliver to people’s homes every Monday. These baskets can be ordered

on the programme’s Facebook page or email: pfcb@adisvegabaja.com There is also a collection point for the products at the kiosk by the Puente Nuevo bridge. The profits from the sales will go towards extra-curricular activities for the students. On a recent visit the Mayor of Orihuela Emilio Bascuñana praised the work of ADIS and invited the public to try these baskets of ecological produce. ADIS president Ana Sáez said this project shows that “people with different abilities can integrate and have quality of life”.

FESTIVE FLIGHT MISERY Expats in Spain who are travelling to the UK to spend Christmas with family and friends should try to change their flights to earlier in the week if possible, as workers at 18 airports - including the main London terminals, will be on strike on Friday, 23rd December and also on Christmas Eve, Saturday 24th December. Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton employees are among the 1,500-plus workers planning to down tools as a ‘last resort’, according to their union. Their salaries have been frozen since 2014, despite the cost of living rocketing even since then and housing now out of reach of the budgets of most first-time buyers. Unite, the union representing the workers, has rejected proposals to increase wages by 4.65 percent in three years. Swissport luggage-handling staff have also joined the strike plans, meaning flights are likely to be delayed or even cancelled. Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Edinburgh are other airports affected. Additionally, pilots on the airline Virgin Atlantic are

negotiating through their union, PPU, and say they will be working 'the bare minimum to comply with their job contracts in protest over job conditions. To cap it all, around 2,000 British Airways (BA) cabin crew members have voted to strike in protest over their own frozen salaries, although they have not yet given a date to do so. It is likely, however, to be over the Christmas and New Year period, since other than summer, this is when British airports are at their busiest. The ground staff strike at the 18 UK airports could continue indefinitely, says Unite spokesman Oliver Richardson, unless company bosses agree to open discussions with them on equal terms. Brits living in Spain should keep a close eye on the websites for their airlines if they are due to spend Christmas and New Year in their country of origin. Extra time should be allowed when travelling back to Spain, particularly from the main London airports where the requisite two hours before take-off is frequently not enough time to check in and get through security on a normal day.

Moving rocks

Winter is a great time to build a rockery, for one reason if no other it is heavy work, and heavy work is better done when the weather is cool. Building a rockery is not difficult and they are great features for the garden, with a huge choice of rock types and sizes. The plants that are normally planted - and grow well - in rockeries, are those which are happy in dry areas; Succulents, cacti, grasses, bulbs, ground covers, flowering plants, etc. Any slow or low growing plant will normally be okay, providing that it is suitable for dry conditions.

Why grow plants amongst rocks? • Rocks, and the mosses and lichens that grow on rock surfaces, provide a variety of interesting textures and colours in the garden. • Rocks can be used to visually separate pockets of plants. • On sloping ground, rocks prevent the soil washing away from plant roots. • Rocks help to suppress weeds growing amongst the plants. • Rocks help to insulate plant roots (roots find cooler and moister soil under the rocks).

Where to build a rockery A sunny, well-drained spot is best. The most obvious place to build a rockery is on a slope or a mound in an attempt to imitate nature. To achieve this effect, seek inspiration from nature, then try to imitate what you see. To ensure that the rocks are safe and secure, at least half, and preferably two-thirds of the rock should be buried in the ground. On flat ground, a rockery provides a sense of visual relief, but care is needed to blend it into the

garden. They work well in natural style settings such as behind ponds or adjacent to water courses, but can also look good built against a wall or in small odd-shaped corners of the garden. Another possibility is to build a rock wall with planting pockets in it: 1. Create a solid foundation - either dig a trench down to solid sub-soil, or if the wall is high and heavy, dig a trench and pour a concrete foundation below ground level. 2. Build the first layer of rock and then pack a good quality loam behind the rock. 3. Leaving the odd pocket exposed to plant in, add the next layer of rock - with the face slightly behind the first layer (so the wall has a slope backwards). 4. Pack soil behind the second layer. 5. Continue with further layers leaving pockets for planting as you go, and being careful to retain the slope backwards. 6. Plant the pockets of exposed soil as soon as you are finished - the plants need to start growing ASAP so as to hold the soil in place.

What type of rock? Once you have chosen the site for your rockery you must then choose the appropriate type of rock: Sandstone, granite, volcanic rock, etc. Imitation rocks are also available from some garden centres. Most people favour natural shaped rocks, but cut blocks can also be used to create interesting rockery effects. Regardless of type, the sizes of the individual rocks will need to be in scale with the overall project.

If the rocks you use are very large and heavy, you will need to be smart in the way you handle them. The quickest method is to hire a machine (such as a small loader/tractor) for a day. Be careful though - rough handling can scratch the surface of the rock and destroy its natural appearance. Medium to large rocks can be moved by hand with the help of friends, a wheelbarrow, or a trolley. If you lift heavy rocks, make sure you lift correctly: Straight back, bended knees – let your legs, not your back, do the lifting.

How to arrange rocks

There is no simple rule for deciding whether a rock is in the right position. It depends upon the shape of the land, the position of other rocks, the surrounding plants and the visual effect you are trying to achieve. Sometimes it will be necessary to adjust the rock more than once so that the best side of the rock is facing up. As you position the rocks, keep standing back and look at what you are doing from a distance and from different angles. Rockeries can be made to fit any space available. If you do not have the room for a large rockery, you can create a good result with the creative use of shrubs and just a few strategically placed rocks. Have fun!

Basque independence referendum backed by six in ten Nearly six in 10 Basque residents want to see a referendum on the region's independence – but four in 10 would vote to stay in Spain and more than one in 10 would abstain, says a recent survey. A total of 59 percent of those interviewed in a stratified regional poll, the ‘Eusko-Barometer’, believe the people should at least be given a formal voice concerning whether or not the Basque Country should secede from Spain. But only 39 percent would definitely vote for independence – another 31 percent would vote against it, 18 percent say they are ‘not sure’, and 12 percent would not vote at all. Around 800 interviews were carried out on a microcosm of the region’s population, and also concerned questions such as a possible referendum on whether or not Spain's Constitution should be amended, 38 years after it was first signed. Two thirds, or 67 percent, say they are happy with the Magna Carta as it stands, whilst 37 percent would vote to change it, considering that it needs to be updated to reflect values of the 21st century rather than of the late 1970s. Of those who did not categorically support a Basque independence referendum, 30 percent gave an outright ‘no’, 3 percent were not sure, and 8 percent were not bothered either way. Three in five, or 60 percent, say they feel Basque and Spanish, rather than one or the other – 36% in equal measures, although 22 percent felt‘entirely Basque’and only 5 percent ‘entirely Spanish’. This is the second survey in as many years which shows Basque nationalism is falling out of fashion. A decade ago, a 55 percent majority believed in a definition of a separate Basque nation as part of a

hypothetical self-governing reform – in the same way as, for example, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in the UK which are considered a halfway house between mere ‘regions’ and separate countries, but which are all covered by British nationality, budget, and central rule. This has now dropped to 47 percent and is an idea backed by 76 percent of Basque nationalists, but also by a few non-nationalists. A total of 35 percent rejected this possibility, among which were 57 percent of the non-nationalists. However, 14 percent of those who approved of it would want it to happen within the framework of the Spanish nation, or for Basques to continue to be Spanish nationals, compared with 25 percent who defined ‘Spanish’ and ‘Basque’ as ‘two clearly-distinct national realities’. Great divide Overall, the divide remains strong – even though proindependence residents are now in the majority – with 27 percent believing the Basque Country would enjoy a better quality of life post-secession and 35 percent believing it would be drastically worse, although 15 percent do not think anything would change and 23 percent are ‘not sure’. Irrespective of support or otherwise for Basque independence, backing for the 'right to decide' has remained stable in the last two years. If Basque secession meant the 'new' country would no longer be able to continue as a member of the European Union, or would lose clout in the Spanish trade market, the 31 percent who would vote for independence would drop to 25 percent and 23 percent respectively.

SHOPPING AND TRADITIONAL FOOD

St. Petersburg has a growing number of stores offering a variety of goods and services including everything from handmade arts, crafts, and souvenirs to fresh fruits and vegetables. Shopping along the city’s festive main thoroughfare, Nevsky Prospekt makes you feel more like

a native Piterbyrzhets (Petersburger), and offers the best variety of stores in the city. Bolshoi Prospekt on Vasilyevsky Island also offers a comparatively good selection of stores. The essential components of Russian cuisine are the ones, which provide more carbohydrates and fat rather than proteins. Fresh fruits and vegetables are rarely used in food. PROPERTY BLOG

It’s not all about sales Rebecca Serwotka – Your favourite local property expert, of Inmobiliaria Real Estate Agents in Ciudad Quesada & published author of “Moving Forward – 25 Essential Rules For Buying & Selling Real Estate Without Going Crazy.” Request your FREE copy today! Someone asked me the other day, do I enjoy writing these blogs every week, and how do I keep coming up with something new? The simple answer to that was, “yes and it's easy,” because it's something I'm passionate about. I love sharing my experience, and being given the chance to inspire and equip you for your property journey, whether it be buying or selling, gives me great pleasure. Steve Jobs once said, “If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don't have to be pushed. The vision pulls you.” And that is how I feel about my career. I’m here to share with you something that I care about. It's not all about the sales! Yes, you read right ... Don’t get me wrong, achieving a sale is always what a Real Estate Agent is paid to do, but guiding a seller through a stressful time in their life is very rewarding, especially in some circumstances, like when they are alone. Being a Real Estate Agent is tough going at times, but when I see someone that has been “led down the garden path,” then I love being able to bring them clarity on something that seemed daunting, and put them on the right track for their own success, this is pure job satisfaction. When selling a property, some homeowners find it difficult to detach the strings tied tightly around their heart, but that’s easy to overcome as it’s all about mindset. ‘You need to prepare yourself mentally, for the transition from homeowner to home seller. Some people can do this with ease, but for others, they struggle to come to terms with the reality of putting a number (price) on their emotional

attachment to the property. You need to think, this is just a “house” ... and that your “home” is wherever you make it. It’s all about your mindset in allowing you to let go of that house, and move on. ‘Remember, just like you made memories in your present home, you will have wonderful neighbours again, find interesting places to visit, and even find a new favourite restaurant. Wherever YOU go, you’ll find friendly people, and that new house will suddenly feel like home. Selling your home this time of year, is when you need to keep on top of the little things, before they become too much, like sweeping away any fallen leaves. Nothing looks worse than a buyer turning up outside your home and it looks like a tornado has just passed through. Bougainvillea especially, leaves a lovely trail of petals, as soon as the breeze starts. But clearing them away, little and often, will help maintain a warm, welcoming entrance. So, if this year wasn’t your luckiest, healthiest or happiest, remember, change your mindset, be grateful for what you have, and look forward to a strong 2017 and make it your best year yet! Have a Merry Christmas & a Wonderful New Year! John had a wicked sense of humour and always had people in fits of laughter. I can see him laughing now with his shoulders and belly shaking as he giggles like a girl. He was a very generous man who always bought everyone in the bar a drink. He also had a love of good food and wine and eating in the best restaurants. We would join them on many occasions and we had some fabulous times. He was also a great cook, which was a good thing as Angela was the total opposite. His garlic chilli king prawns and broccoli and stilton soup were just a couple of his speciality dishes. John and Angela had 32 great years together and had done lots of travelling overseas including Australia,

Thailand and Las Vegas. He had hired a Cadillac in Vegas and asked Angela to marry him in a drive through chapel. As she had no idea of his intentions, she asked if she could think about it and go back the next day. He said no because he had the car back later that day and the next car was nowhere as near as flash. I remember the first party of theirs we were invited to. There were fresh paellas delivered to the venue as well as the usual food you might expect. When I went to the bar to get a drink, John said to order anything I wanted and it would be settled up later. When nothing was written down, I asked how this was going to happen. His reply was, we were weighed on the mat on

the way in and will be weighed on the way home! John’s real loves were these four things: 1. His wife “Princess” Angela. Although there were other things he called her. One example, his little T-bone steak, because she was a little larger than a little pork chop and a few others names that I couldn’t possibly divulge. They finally did get married in June of this year. Well they had to be sure didn’t they? 2. His one and only daughter Georgette. 3. His lovely Mother. He was her baby and he adored her. And last but not least, his faithful dog that he named ”STAY.” Who does that? John Abbott that’s who! He always said, if he knew he would have lived beyond the

age of 40, he would have looked after himself better but John lived and loved life to the fullest. He always said his send off song at his funeral would be the laughing policeman and as he knew his fate that is exactly what happened with addition of a fake hand sticking out of the back of the coffin! Of course there was laughter amongst the tears. See you later. Linda x

MOVIE PICK Saving Mr Banks – BBC 2 9.00pm The story behind Disney’s Mary Poppins is brought to life in this uplifting drama. Fallen on hard times, reclusive British author PL Travers travels to Hollywood to oversee a film adaptation of Mary Poppins by the famously frivolous Walt Disney. However, Travers clashes with Disney and his team, and expresses an open distaste for their saccharine, sing-song plans for the picture. Will the charismatic cartoon magnate find a way to loosen the author’s vice-like grip on her creation?

The true story of Miss Shepherd, an eccentric woman of uncertain origins, who ‘temporarily’ parked her broken-down van in writer Alan Bennett’s London driveway ... and proceeded to live there for the next 15 years.

Michael McIntyre hosts a festive edition of his family entertainment series. Michael is joined on stage by comedians Harry Enfield and Catherine Tate and there’s a duet from Michael Ball and Alfie Boe. Plus a choir is given a surprise when they become the unexpected stars of the show. There is also new comedy material from Michael himself, and Aled Jones hands over his phone in Celebrity Send to All.

Call the Midwife – BBC1 – 9.00pm

Drama about a group of midwives in 1950s London, based on the memoirs of Jennifer Worth. When a small South African mission hospital that has links with the Order is threatened with closure, Sister Julienne procures the assistance of Sister Winifred, Trixie, Barbara, Nurse Crane, Dr Turner, Shelagh, Fred and Tom Hereward to try and save it. The Nonnatus team travel to Africa and are soon faced with a range of challenges. The biggest hurdle is a neighbouring white farmer, who refuses access across his land for a new water pipe which could save the clinic’s future. The team dig deep and achieve real success - a completed polio immunisation programme, several trips to save lives in remote locations and a caesarean performed by candlelight. In their attempt to save the hospital and make a difference to the lives of the people that use it, some of their own lives are changed forever.

MOVIE PICK Home Alone – Channel 4 – 7.00pm

Macaulay Culkin stars as an eight-year-old who is accidentally left at home alone when his parents, siblings and relatives set off in a mad rush for a Christmas holiday in France. At first, he relishes his solitude and freedom, until his idyll is interrupted by two ham-fisted burglars. Can he defend his family home from them, perhaps with some fiendish booby traps? Directed by Chris Columbus and written by John Hughes, both masters of the popular comedy genre, the film made Culkin’s name and its title entered common parlance.

Spanish pupils in the north are academically ahead of the south This week’s publication of the 2015 PISA report on education levels in secondary schools in 75 countries brought mixed messages for Spain’s education system. Spain improved its position in the rankings and is now closer than ever before to the average of all the countries that took part in the annual study, although critics have said that this is due to other countries getting worse results this year. However despite the generally good average performance, the data reveals big differences between Spain’s autonomous regions, with northern areas outperforming southern ones, including Andalucía. The PISA report, compiled by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), is a benchmark study measuring pupil performance principally across reading, science and maths. The average mark across all countries in each subject is set at 500. For this 2015 study, 37,000 fifteen-yearolds in 980 state and private schools across the country took part. Worldwide, 540,000 pupils completed the test. This year’s survey focused on science. With 493 points in this category, the quality of the

Spanish system is in line with America, France and Sweden for example. The country is above the OECD average in reading, matches it in science and is four points behind in maths. Comparing the highest and lowest ranked Spanish regions, the study shows that pupils in Castilla y León and Madrid are one and a half school years ahead of pupils in Andalucía and Extremadura, with the Canaries and Murcia getting the worst marks among the regions. Seen in terms of countries, Castilla y

León is at the same level as Finland for reading and Madrid is at the same level as South Korea for science, according to the report. In science, Andalucía achieves a mark of 473 versus the mark of 493 for Spain overall, 466 for maths against the national average of 486 and 479 compared to Spain’s 496 for reading. Teaching unions have said that the sample used was “small and not representative” and that it was wrong to “magnify” the PISA results. Singapore was the top-ranked country.

Access to the beach at El Cura Disabled access to the sea has now been installed at El Cura beach. The councillor for beaches, Javier Manzanares, presented the new ramp which will mean that disabled people using wheelchairs and walkers can enjoy the sea too. El Cura is the first of three beaches in Torrevieja in which the ramp is being installed. The ramp at El Cura is 37 metres long but the one to be installed at Los Náufragos will top this at 78 metres.

A further ramp at Los Locos will only be 33 metres long. The organisations of ALPE, APANEE, AMFA and COCEMFE were invited to the opening of the new facility. The work has taken place in December to ensure that any glitches can be corrected and that the facility will be ready to be used during the busy Semana Santa period. It includes a ramp and handrails to make access safer. The ramp can be dismantled and is not a

permanent feature. There are plans to make Torrevieja’s beaches even more accessible following this installation. Javier Manzanares has announced: ‘This is only the first step in order to make the beaches of Torrevieja accessible for everyone. Our intention is to continue to work on this commitment.’ Other adaptations include a shower along the walk way as well as platforms with shade that wheelchair users can

benefit from in the summer. Once these proposals are all put into practice, Torrevieja’s beaches will become some of

the most accessible in Spain. Suzanne O’Connell

nose on amazon or ebay. As long as it is partially working you won’t do any damage to the laptop or Windows so it may just be worth putting up with the problem.

Carol via email asks I am still using Windows Vista on my Acer laptop and I’ve been told it will stop working and I will have to upgrade to Windows 10 or someone said I would be best going with Windows 7? Will my computer run either of these or is it time for a new laptop? Aunty says Hi Carol, Windows Vista is now 10 years old and will be officially unsupported around April 2017 but it won’t actually stop working. What will happen is certain apps will no longer update (Chrome for example) and devices such as printers won’t come with the necessary Vista version of their software. I would recommend going for Windows 10 over Windows 7, simply because it is the latest version and I have no doubt that Microsoft have already reduced their support for Windows 7. Whether or not your laptop will be able to run Windows 7 I will need you to email me the exact model and I can investigate further for you. Tina from San Luis asks: Hi Aunty, I use Amazon for most of my online shopping and books and everything has been fine for years but all of a sudden it has changed to a Spanish format and all the books for sale are Spanish versions. Also there seems to

Aunty says: Hello Tina, Probably the best way is to use www.amazon.co.uk (rather than .com or .es) as this will force the UK English version. Windows often tries to be a bit too clever and checks your location and decides what language you need, and as .com sites are global this can cause this kind of problem. Elaine via email asks: Hello Aunty, I have started getting a warning message when I switch on my HP Pavilion laptop “Warning: the battery cannot be identified. This system will be unable to charge this battery. Press any key to continue.” When I continue my laptop starts up and runs without any problems and the battery level indicator says I have 1 hour and 45 minutes which seems fine as it is the original battery and I know the deteriorate over time. Can I do any damage by not getting a new battery or should I continue to use it? Aunty Says: Hi Elaine, It is very likely that your battery is simply on its way out. A new battery for one of them won’t be very expensive, around €40 for a good one, so maybe have a

Pete via email asks: Dear Aunty. I have a new laptop with windows 10 and with my old one, when I opened my bank statement from my bank, it automatically went to a spreadsheet program. Now when I open the same download it brings up Microsoft Excel, but it says my trial period has expired and I need to go online and purchase a copy. I don’t remember exactly how it worked before but I think it was Office but was a free program you had recommended. Aunty says: Hi Pete, What you probably had before was the free Apache Open Office from www.openoffice.org which does pretty much everything Microsoft Office does. You may want to remove the trial version of Office via “control panel” “programs and features”. That’ll do for this week, email me your questions to auntyvirus@costablanca people.com and I will see what I can do. Any questions, you can email me at: auntyvirus@costablancapeople.com and hopefully see you all next week.

Classic car club celebrates Christmas The Torrevieja Classics and Specialists Car Club had its Christmas dinner on Sunday 11th December at ‘Cala Capitan’ in Cabo Roig. Whilst there have been a few rainy, dismal days recently, the club were lucky to enjoy a perfect afternoon. Thirty six members of the club and their friends met at 2pm for a welcome cava and canapés. They had a Spanish three-course meal, without any sign of turkey, but with fish and steak from the BBQ. The meal finished off with a desert and coffee and singing from Yvonne, the bar’s resident singer. The group are now looking forward to their next event which will be the December rally on Wednesday the 28th December. They will start out from the

Members of the club outside the venue

Spanglish Bar at 10.30am and end up playing crazy golf in Quesada. The club are always ready to welcome new members. If you are interested in cars and rallies and enjoy attending social events then this might be the club for you. If you have your own classic car, even better. For more information visit www. ClubTorrevieja.com or telephone Ron Blackwell on 966 791 212. Alternatively you can come along to one of their monthly meetings which is every first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm in the Cafetaria Marina Club in the International Marina. Suzanne O’Connell

Hondón Valley British Legion visits ‘top gun’ A few months ago, after Sgt (Dai) Williams RAF attended a Royal British Legion Hondón Valley Branch meeting by, a seed was sown to try and organise a visit to the Tactical Leadership Programme (TLP) based at Los Llanos Military Airbase, Albacete. TLP provides training courses for NATO pilots and support personnel. During these courses, they hold open days exclusively for course participants. It was decided that a visit during one of these open days would be an enjoyable and rare opportunity for Royal British Legion members to engage with military personnel and aircraft from many different nations. Following some considerable planning and organisation, Hondón Valley Branch members headed north to Albacete on Thursday 17th November, with a full coach of rather exited aviation fans. The group was met and very professionally hosted all day by Sgt Williams and after a hot beverage in the Airman’s canteen, we were given a guided

Poppy appeal donation

tour of the Students’ accommodation, recreation areas and facilities. A rather filling three-course lunch then followed in the air base restaurant. The TLP Commandant, Colonel Luis Villar Coloma and Suboficial mayor (WO) Zaranton formally welcomed the Group to Los Llanos Airbase and the TLP Facilities. In return Nigel Hails, District Chairman, thanked them for their co-operation and assistance in enabling the visit to go ahead. The next activity was an important safety briefing before being ‘Let Loose’ onto the runway and flight line for two hours. The Branch members were spellbound by the informality and closeness you could achieve with 35 different NATO Fighter aircraft. Pilots and ground crew were on site to give guided tours of their respective jets, answer any questions and help visitors into the cockpits for the amazing photograph opportunities. The photograph of this visit was taken in front of a Royal Air Force Hawk Jet and

reluctantly, knowing the visit was nearing its end, the Branch were then gathered together before a group photograph. During the Flight line visit Cpl Simmons, (RAF) very kindly donated the unit’s Poppy Appeal contributions to the Hondon Valley Branch. The Base memorabilia shop opened selling an array of “Top Gun Aviator” type goodies, clothing and merchandise, which several members took full advantage of and after a cold drink and some farewells, the Branch members were mustered onto the coach and returned to the home base in the Hondon Valley. The Branch would like to extend a huge thank you to the TLP Commandant and his team based at Los Llanos. To find out more about the Hondón Valley Branch of the Royal British Legion, please contact the secretary via email: secretary.hondonvalley3577@gmail.com or visit the branches website, which can be found at: www.britishlegion.org.uk /branches/hondon-valley

Santa Claus parade in Orihuela

Parade organisers The Councilor of Commerce, Dámaso Aparicio, has announced that the Santa Claus parade, scheduled for Saturday 17th will now be held on Friday, 23rd December 23, due to the heavy rain and high wind forecast over that weekend. The Councillor said: “We want this activity to be a huge success for the children of the municipality as we know every year it is long-awaited by the youngsters and it would be awful if the occasion was a wash out due to bad weather.” The Councillor, who was accompanied by representatives of the Association of Merchants of the Municipality of Orihuela and Calles con Alma, explained

that before the parade, which will see ‘Papa Noel’ weave his way through the streets, the Mayor, Emilio Bascuñana, will receive Santa Claus in the Town Hall, from where the parade will begin and head for the main shopping streets of the city. The route will pass through López Pozas, San Agustín, Avenida de España, Calderón de la Barca, San Pascual, Plaza Nueva, until Calle Mayor. At the Plaza del Salvador Santa Claus will receive the boys and girls who can share with him their wishes for Christmas. There will also be a demonstration of ballet by eighty girls from the School of Ana Belén Navarro.

Orihuela’s traditional Christmas Night run Orihuela’s traditional Christmas Night fun run, the Cross Nocturno, will once again take place this year. The event, the ninth annual run, will start at 9.00pm on December 25th and was announced recently by the Councillor for Sport Dámaso Aparicio. Cross Nocturno is organised by the Local Police Association “Virgen de Monserrate” with help from the Town Hall and the Oriol Athletics Club.

The course covers 6.5km and is run through the city centre, finishing at the Seminary. Last year more than 1,000 people took part and organisers hope for even more entrants this year. There will be prizes awarded for the best individual and group fancy dress costumes, as well as the winners of the men’s and women’s race categories. Anyone wishing to enter can register

on the website: www.asuspuestos.com before 22nd December. Participants can pick up their race number, timing chip and running bag from the One Sport Centre gym, in Orihuela The organisers are encouraging people from all over the province, of all nationalities to come and be part of this unique festive event.

Quesada, Dry cleaning business, the Marco Polo, oldest dry cleaning business in Quesada - there’s only three? A unique 9am to 5pm business, fully equipped with all machinery ready for either commercial contracts like bars and restaurants, or for simple domestic use of trousers, jackets, dresses and skirts. The previous owners built this business up and sold all contacts for a substantial sum. I have full details of all contacts available in my office. This is a high profit ratio business to the right husband and wife team with get up and go. Rent is 500 euros a month, equal to 20 euros per day, assuming a 5 and half day working week. All anyone needs is common sense, and the ability to work and net work. For sale at 10,000 euros. Further details telephone SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours, or 672 366 275 any reasonable time. Benijofar, restaurant Auberge lease for sale. This highly rated Restaurant, located within an arcade location, right in the centre of Benijofar, is sadly for sale due to ill health reasons. The premises are fully equipped in every respect and fully licensed too. The interior décor is of a very expensive high standard, the basic details are as follows. 44 covers inside, space for another 20 outside. Huge fully fitted stainless steel kitchen, with two separate storage areas. Full air conditioning throughout. 139 square metres construction, which is over 3 times the size of my office. Two disabled W.C.s. Very reasonable rent of 28 euros per day. Underground parking space for owners car. These premises are 'turn key and go' for whatever choice of foods the new owners proposed to trade as. The Restaurant has been established over 5 years with excellent reviews on Trip Advisor, what more can we say? Priced at 32,500 euros, to include all fixture, fittings, furnishings and kitchen equipment. Over 20 photographs available, simply contact SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779, office hours or 672 366 275 other times. Quesada Centre village area, Kebab/Pizza/burger takeaway business for sale. Established many years with outside seating of 20 covers, and in a prime location close to the main petrol station next to the Arches entrance. This business is fully registered, licensed by Rojales Ayuntemiento, and with a current Hygiene Licence. Fully equipped with all stainless steel appliances, and truly is a turnkey and go operation.

Owner is prepared to offer training, but this is not a question of needing al a carte chef’s experience. Rent is 750 euros per month, equal to less than 25 euros per day. Ample parking outside. Takeaway food is a high profit ratio business and cash only, need I say more? Reasonably priced at 20,000 euros to include all fixture, fittings and many years of goodwill. Reason for sale, owner wishes to retire. At present this business does not sell alcohol, which could easily be changed and I feel would benefit this business. Further details and photos in my office, please telephone SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours, or 672 366 275 other times. Quesada, Bar/Cafeteria for sale, currently trading with amazing views of the golf course. Outside terrace for almost 20 covers, inside covers for almost 20 covers, small but well fitted kitchen, interior decorations are truly first class, a very smart unit offering simple snacks to full meals within a very classy establishment. Rent 650 euros a month, equal to 21.36 euros per day. Fully licensed in every respect, price 20,000 euros. Further details telephone SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours or 672 366 2775 other times. Los Montesinos, 4kms from the arches. Rare bed and breakfast opportunity. Rurally located in 8,330m of land, with building of over 550m plus garage block. This property now has planning for use as a Bed and Breakfast Business. Without any further construction, but with 2 walls inside the property being moved, and one wall added, this property would make 8 en suite bedrooms, and a further 2 Motel style rooms, thus making 10 letting rooms. This would make a serious business, unlike other silly attempts with 2 or 3 rooms to rent. Plus enormous farmhouse kitchen, living room, dining room suitable for up to 20 covers, plus swimming pool, full oil fired central heating, mains water, electric, wi-fi, landline telephone, and a further 5,000m of land we have never used in almost 17 years! Vehicle, caravan, boat storage? With separate entrance. Owners accommodation inside the building of 2 beds, living room and bathroom. Adequate parking for 20 cars or more immediately outside the building. The property is easily located with main road advertising available. Price 600,000 euros. For further details please contact SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours or 672 366 275 anytime. Quesada village area, freehold shop, unit for sale, for investors only. The shop is a well established business of some years. They pay the current owner 1,000 euros per month, making 12,000 euros per year. Buy this shop and become the landlord with a 10% return for an investment of 120,000 euros. No bank can match this opportunity? Why receive peanuts upon your money in the bank, when you could receive 12,000 euros per year? You become the owner landlord, and once a month you collect the rent of 1,000 euros? Not exactly rocket science or hard work either. Further details contact SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours or 672 366 275 out of hours. Quesada, lock up bar restaurant lease for sale. A very established venue, full stainless steel kitchen, outside separate storage space, separate function room, 48 covers inside. Outside terrace, fully licensed to all local regulations, fully fitted and ready to go. Further details contact SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours or 672 366 275 out of hours. Price upon application, and it’s a bargain! Los Montesinos, fully equipped Unisex Hairdressing Salon, 3 chairs, 2 backwash basins, separate beauty room and nail bar. Main road location, established many years. Very reasonable rent, and a long lease available. Fully equipped and licensed, reason for sale, Owner wishes to retire? Price 15,000 euros, negotiable. For further details please contact SunseekersQuesada on 966 718 779 office hours or 672 366 275 out of hours.
