Civil Guard shuts seven cannabis clubs in Torrevieja

the torrevieja Civil Guard has dismantled a network of cannabis clubs that were found to be fronts for selling drugs in the town. in the same operation, 19 people – aged between 25 and 69 years of age - were arrested. those detained included Britrish and irish nationals, as well as people from Spain, Sweeden, norway, Germany, Lithuania and Chile. all have been charged with crimes against public health, illegal possession of weapons and belonging to a criminal gang. officers confiscated: 9,338 kilos of marijuana, 1,276 kilos of hashish, 30 grams of cocaine, 32 litres of liquid cannabis, 42 marijuana plants, 60 cannisters with liquid cannabis, various prohibited weapons and over €10,000 in cash.

in addition, the operation included

ten searches of premises and homes which uncovered a clandestine hashish lab, where cannabis-derived products were made, such as chocolates, cookies, resins, oils, and drinks.

Police sources said that the seven clubs involved in the investigation have been closed for a period of five years, as a preventive measure “to guarantee the safety and well-being of the community”.

Increase in crime

the investigation began after the Civil Guard detected an increase in offences related to the consumption and possession of drugs in specific areas of torrevieja. among those caught were minors and foreign tourists.the operation was carried out during the months of March and april and police

identified “a common pattern in areas where there wasa nearby cannabis associations”.

Cannabis clubs are legal in Spain so long as people are members and consume their own marijuana at registered premises, where the selling of drugs is strictly prohibited. those responsible for running the seven clubs had started their activities under the guise of non-profit associations, however it was discovered that several of them had police records related to drug trafficking. they were systematically failing to comply with the regulations of this type of association and were blatantly exceeding the amount of marijuana allowed per member, consumption was not limited to the interior of the premises, and they did not keep records of the origin of

the drug. Four of them were not even registered as required in the national registry of associations.

the investigations led to the discovery that these clubs did not limit their activity to their members, but also sold drugs to those under age and were even ‘recommended’ for foreign tourists.

the Civil Guard soon realised that the associations being investigatedwere mere fronts designed to give an appearance of legality to the cultivation and distribution of drugs.

Orihuela Costa Town Hall to be converted

the Mayor of orihuela, Carolina Gracia has met with representatives of the neighbourhood association of Cabo roig and Lomas de orihuela Costa to discuss the proposed government program for the period 2023-2027.

top of the list in order to meet the key objective of optimsing resources to provide new spaces and services to the residents of orihuela Costa, it the planed conversion of Playa Flamenca town hall into a cultural and multi-purpose centre that includes, among other services, a study room, a children’s library and an assembly hall for carrying out various activities.

this option would see all the municipal services that are offered in the current headquarters of the city council relocated to the emergency Services Centre, near to Consum supermarket in La Zenia. the Mayor explained that this building has 4,700 square metres of space, and therefore has sufficient capacity to house these municipal services, and even increase them. the relocation would see all administrative services unified in the same space, such as nie and dni provided by the national Police, in addition to providing ample parking for people who have to go in

their vehicles.

Carolina Gracia said: “this proposal is being well received because service is unified and spaces are optimised while allowing, in a short space of time, to have a facility as demanded as this cultural and multipurpose space. on the coast.” during the meeting, attendedby tomás Moreno and Unai Villanueva from the aVCLr, the Mayor outlined the need to implement the “orihuela Costa Plan” for infrastructure maintenance with a transversal project for the entire municipal government and a gradual increase of the budget up to 10 percent in each year of the political term.

Several proposals were discussed, such as an increase in the waste management and cleaning service, with an increase of 40 percent in personnel until 2027, as well as thecreation of an eco-park on the coast, points for depositing belongings and furniture, as well as an improvement plan for the collectionof prunings on the coast. Signs and signalling on coastal beaches and a transport network that connects different points of the coast with the beaches and service buildings such as the health centre were also outlined.

Orihuela Costa expats urged to vote

all local political parties and leading members of the community are urging expats to visit the polls and vote in Sunday’s municipal elections. Whatever your political allegiance, the most important point it that you exercise your right to vote.

the general consensus is that

the people of orihuela Costa need to show that they are a force to be reckoned with and the only way to do that politically is to vote. the more votes cast in the local area the more power the population has.

The PP presents Orihuela Costa candidates

the Popular Party, supported by C.L.a.r.o has presented its programme for orihuela Costa and the team that will be responsible for it to La Glea beach, Campoamor. according to the opinion polls, the Popular Party is favourite to win the orihuela municipal election on 28th May. therefore, there was considerable interest in the programme for orihuela Costa.

a key element of the programme is the re-introduction of a Councillor for the Coast, but this time with a budget, and the presentation of the team to implement the programme was met with equal interest.

according to the PP, the programme is the ‘most detailed and complete programme for the reform of services and improvement of the quality of life for residents of the coast that has been proposed’. there are nearly one hundred proposals, which range from realisation of the much demanded multi-use Cultural Centre in a prominent site close to La Zenia Boulevard with a modern concept Library, facilitating a second health Centre, construction of the decades awaited footbridge over the aP-7 motorway to ensure the safety of pedestrians at the danger point of Lomas de Cabo roig, completion of the 16 kilometre continuous coastal path from Punta Prima to Mil Palmeras, to the improvements of the maintenance of parks and gardens and road and

pavements.

a radical reform of the street cleaning and rubbish removal service is also promised.this will include an eco-park for the deposit of solid waste next to the new site for the urban street cleaning and rubbish removal work force centre at Pau 26 and improvements in the collection of garden waste.

Empty promise?

of course, there have been many apparently attractive programmes for orihuela Costa from many different political parties in the past. however, according to C.L.a.r.o the difference this time is not only that the Popular Party is predicted to head

the government after the 28 May election but that there will be a major structural reform in the government of orihuela Costa. the Councillor for the Coast to be appointed will be raul Fernandez a resident of the coast. he will be supported by a team consisting of three candidates on the Popular Party candidate list, all residents of the coast. Most prominent will be antonio Cerdan, President of C.L.a.r.o also of importance is the presence of Sonia huertas candidate in 2019 who has worked conscientiously for the coast for the past 4 years and is well known in the expat community.

in a statement

C.L.a.r.o said:“We will campaign for a Popular Party

National Police investigates Orihuela City Council

orihuela City Council has issued a statement regarding the investigation being carried out by the national Police into the alleged illegal sale of iron and scrap metal items owned by the council. the statement states that “this City Council is top of the list of those interested in knowing what has happened to all this material, however, we must be prudent, given the existence of an open investigation.”

government knowing that the chances of the coast electing even one councillor will be made impossible this year, since Brexit will reduce the previously very important number of British eligible voters.the number of non-Spanish eligible voters in the whole municipality has dropped by 30 percent to just over 3,000.

“With this ambitious reform programme, the prospect of governing and a strong and able team of orihuela Costa residents to implement the programme, C.L.a.r.o is convinced that this election will be a game-changer and that the reforms and improvements for which we have been campaigning for 16 years will at last become a reality.”

the statement also alims that the City Council was ‘surprised when it learned of the investigations into this matter’and immediately made available to the national Police all the information that has been requested and that exists, collaborating in all elements with the investigation, providing transfer to the municipal legal services.

Finally, the City Council announced that “when the police investigation, if applicable, is transferred to the judicial headquarters and more details are known about what happened, the town hall will act accordingly.” it has promised to take relevant and appropriate action against those who have harmed the interests of the public or public goods and that ‘measures will be taken againstanyonewho has used this institution for their own benefit’.

Police issue new phone scam warning

the national Police in Spain has issued a warning to people regarding an emerging telephone scam that is exploiting unsuspecting individuals in order to gain access to their personal information. Known as ‘spoofing,’ this sophisticated scam involves cybercriminals posing as representatives from renowned energy companies, banks, or public institutions, creating a deceptive illusion of legitimacy. By manipulating technology, these criminals can make their call appear as if it’s being made by a genuine company, making it exceedingly difficult for victims to discern the fraudulent nature of the call.

Previously, the scam involved fraudsters directly requesting victims to disclose their telephone banking passwords over the phone. however, criminals have upgraded their tactics, employing a more deceptive technique that poses an increased challenge for victims to detect. now, scammers advise individuals that, for security purposes, they should refrain from sharing their passwords verbally and

instead input them directly into their phone. then, unbeknown to the victim, the fraudster discreetly captures the keystrokes, subsequently acquiring control over the victim’s confidential passwords.

in light of this evolving threat, the national Police emphasises the importance of being vigilant and offers crucial guidelines to avoid falling victim to this scam.

• First and foremost, officers advise people never to disclose personal or banking details unless they can ensure they are dealing with a legitimate company or entity. reputable banks, telephone companies, and utility service providers already possess this information and would never ask for it over the phone.

• People are reminded that no authentic private company or public institution would request personal data from their customers.

• To safeguard against this scam, it is essential to never share any card information, identity documents, tax returns, pay slips, usernames,

Low Emission Zones on hold

codes, or passwords.

• In the event of receiving a call or communication offering terms that seem suspicious, individuals are urged to request documentation or demand a follow-up call to conduct necessary verifications.

• Additionally, the public is advised to exercise caution and never click on links embedded within text messages. When accessing bank accounts, it is crucial to exclusively utilize the official applications provided by recognized financial institutions, telephone companies, or utility service providers.

it is hoped that publicising the scam will give people the knowledge and tools necessary to safeguard their personal data and prevent them falling prey to the ever-evolving techniques employed by cybercriminals. By remaining vigilant and adhering to these precautionary measures, individuals can significantly reduce their vulnerability to telephone scams and protect their valuable information from falling into the wrong hands.

nearly six months past the deadline, Low emissions Zones (LeZs) are conspicuously absent in most parts of Spain, with Madrid and Barcelona being the notable exceptions. environmentalists, municipal experts, and business associations have reached a consensus that the issue will remain untouched until after the upcoming elections.

Cristian Quílez, the head of transport and Mobility at the ecology and development Foundation (ecodes), a non-profit organisation responsible for monitoring the implementation of LeZs, voiced concerns over the neglect exhibited by local administrations and the Ministry. Quílez attributed this neglect to the purely political nature of the matter.

the concept of limiting traffic in city centres is met with significant opposition, making politicians understandably apprehensive about enforcing such measures and potentially losing crucial votes. however, a portion of the eU recovery Fund has specifically been allocated for the creation of LeZs, and europe may demand the return of funds if the initiative is not carried out.

“it is an issue that will be resolved after the elections. Most city councils have chosen

to postpone its implementation due to the potential unpopularity it may generate. however, we believe that this could have been mitigated if it had been thoroughly explained to citizens throughout the past year,” stated Quílez.

LeZs aim to reduce air pollution and combat climate change by restricting or charging higher fees for vehicles that do not meet emission standards. Such zones have proven effective in other european cities and are considered an essential step towards achieving sustainability goals. the delay in implementing LeZs in Spain has drawn criticism from environmentalists who argue that urgent action is necessary to improve air quality and public health.

the current situation has also raised concerns about the

allocation and utilization of funds from the eU recovery Fund. With specific provisions for creating LeZs, Spain may face consequences if it fails to fulfil its obligations. environmental advocates emphasize the importance of using these funds to address air pollution and its detrimental effects on society.

as the election draws near, the fate of LeZs hangs in the balance. it remains to be seen whether the incoming government will prioritize environmental concerns and take decisive action to establish LeZs across the country. Ultimately, the successful implementation of these zones will require a careful balance between political considerations and the pressing need to combat climate change and improve air quality in Spanish cities.

Food prices stabilise in Spain

in a recent report published by the national Statistics institute (nie), it was revealed that food prices in Spain demonstrated signs of stability in april, with a modest increase of 13 percent compared to the previous month’s rise of 16.5 percent. While families continue to pay significantly more for their groceries than they did a year ago, the rate of increase has started to slow down.

this latest data represents the lowest level since June 2022, aligning with the predictions made by agriculture Minister Luis Planas. Planas had anticipated a moderation in food price hikes due to a decline in the cost of raw materials and fertilizers on international markets. however, concerns persist

as the ongoing drought in Spain could potentially cause food prices to rise again. the drought has already severely impacted harvests, resulting in a decreasing food supply. notably, in april, the prices of milk, olive oil, cereals, potatoes, pork, and eggs experienced the most significant increases. additionally, sugar saw a substantial surge of 49.6 percent compared to the previous year. on the other hand, energy and fuel prices continued to decline, dropping by 15.6 percent and 4.3 percent, respectively.

despite the stabilization observed in food prices, the overall consumer price index (CPi) experienced a rise in april, increasing by 4.1 percent compared to the previous

month’s 3.3 percent. this comes after the Bank of Spain’s prediction that food prices would witness a 12.2 percent rise by the end of 2023.

Looking back over the past 62 years, the inflation rate for consumer prices in Spain has fluctuated between -0.5 percent and 24.5 percent. For 2022, the calculated inflation rate stood at 8.4 percent. throughout the observation period from 1960 to 2022, the average inflation rate amounted to 6.4 percent per year, resulting in an astounding overall price increase of 4,274.09 percent. While the recent data indicates a slight slowdown in food price increases, the impact of the ongoing drought and other factors on future prices remains uncertain.

New childrens playground to open in Plaza de España in Benejuzar

a report by the municipal secretary endorses the opening of the children’s playground in Plaza de españa as it has all the necessary permits.

the mayoress, rosa García, considers the PP’s accusations to be “deplorable” and assures us that “not everything is valid in politics and even less so at this time of year”.

the municipal architect, the company awarded the contract and municipal technicians handed over the official documentation hours before the opening of the facilities for children.

Benejúzar. 16 May 2023

the municipal secretary of Benejúzar issued a report last Friday on the opening of the Children’s Park in the Plaza de españa. the official text signed by the public secretary - drafted at around 13.43 hours on Friday 12 May - warned of the lack of documentation to open the playground. Less than an hour later, all the certifications and the official record of reception of the work were handed over to the town hall. in addition, the sign of the diputación as the entity subsidising the works was also in place, therefore, the opening of the park, in the afternoon, had all the measures required by law.

the Municipal Secretary has issued a report today to clarify this issue and which shows that

all the documentation was in order and was handed in before the opening of the park. however, the PP of Benejúzar denounced yesterday, Monday, that the opening of the park was done with a report against the public fedataria, “which is absolutely untrue”, clarified the mayoress, rosa García.

Last Friday, both the municipal architect and the company awarded the works and representatives of the town hall handed over, before the opening of the park, all the documentation of work certifications and minutes of reception. in this sense, the opening took place in the afternoon, as announced in the institutional social networks, therefore, it was done with all the guarantees and security for neighbours, as well as with all the documentation in order and submitted to the City Council of Benejúzar.

in this sense, the councillor has

responded to the information that appeared in a regional media to clarify that “the opening of the new playground has been done with all the guarantees, permits and corresponding certifications”, and added that “we will not allow some to tarnish what we have worked so hard to do and build in this town, even if we have to face their arrogance and their electioneering aspirations”.

the mayoress explained that “some people insist on putting sticks in the wheels and want everything to go wrong in Benejúzar, but from the town hall, both councillors and technicians and officials, we continue to work on improving our town”. rosa García added that “i have to thank all the people who have made the park and other actions we have carried out in Benejúzar possible, and also the municipal technicians because they are part of the whole process of transforming our town”.

What is the NLV residence certificate that I have heard about?

the nLV is a non-Lucrative Visa that is available to UK passport holders who wish to move to Spain. other options include the Golden Visaand now the new digital-nomad visa. For many people moving to Spain now, the nLV is the easiest route to go and especially useful for people who have sold a house in the UK to fund their dream of living in a warmer climate.

You will need to prove that you have sufficient financial means to support yourself without working in your new country. the minimum monthly income requirement for this type of visa is currently €2,259.60for the main applicant, plus €564.90 for each dependent. the money (at least two years’ worth) can also be kept in savings of some form. this equates to €35,991.88 per couple per year.

therefore, it is essential to have a solid financial plan and investment strategy before applying for the visa. You should consider taking professional advice from a financial advisor who understands the laws and regulations of both Spain and the UK.

Do I need to keep the money in a Spanish bank account?

no. Spanish bank accounts do not pay much interest and therefore your money will not be working for you.

We recommend considering alternative investments like:

• A Spanish-compliant investment bond • Rental income from a property • Deposits in other countries

it is essential to research and compare different investment products, their risks, fees, and tax implications before making any decisions. it is also a good idea to look for diversification within a portfolio and to keep the money available for renewals within the first five years.

Finally, you should keep accurate records of your investments, income and expenses to comply with the visa renewal requirements and tax obligations in Spain. a Spanish-compliant bond will assist you with all the above.

GBP

amongst key UK economic releases this week, there was an unexpected increase in the latest iLo unemployment rate, which jumped from 3.8 to 3.9% during March. there were also higher claims than expected, with an increase of 46.7K against an expected decline of around 11K over the period. Much the same as in the US and europe, the UK Labour market has remained tight for some time, so the sudden deterioration could be telling us something about the prospects for the broader economy. on that note, incoming UK economic data will continue to be closely scrutinized by both the Boe and markets alike, as they try to assess whether the economy is rigid enough to sustain further interest rate hikes, given ongoing double-digit UK inflation. that key inflation update is released on Wednesday next week, with the latest estimates predicting another month of gains, which could result in a rise on the headline from 10.1 to 10.4% during april. Bank of england governor, andrew Bailey, highlighted earlier in the week that the UK was dealing with a wage price spiral. Speaking at the British Chambers of Commerce annual conference, Bailey implied that the UK was now going through the ‘second-round’ effects of inflation, suggesting that the sudden increase among energy and food prices has impacted wage and price setting among companies, which in turn helps to fuel further increases among inflation.

UK inflation does seem unreasonably high given the marked slowdown in overall inflation in the developed world. as we have highlighted before, UK inflation is currently running at almost the double the level of the US. no doubt there are UK-specific factors behind the math, such as Brexit, logistics and a lack of qualified lorry drivers,

GBP / EUR UPDATE

given that much of the food we eat is transported this way. it has also been noted that the large supermarkets have been slow to pass on much of the recent drop in oil prices at the forecourts. the Supermarkets matter, given that they supply around 50% of all petrol (gas) sales, and over 1/3 of total fuel sales.

as long as inflation remains frothy, the Boe will remain in hiking mode, and to that end markets currently predict another two rate hikes from the Boe before they likely reach their terminal* rate. that should help to keep the pound fairly well supported, given that many of the major central banks have, or are planning to, move to a pause in their respective hiking cycles. however, sterling has struggled this week against a broadly stronger dollar (see USd), with GBP/USd dropping from a one-year high at over 1.2675, to under 1.2400. however, at the same time GBP/eUr moved back over 1.1500, implying a more robust pound outside of the cable mix.

*terminal is the end or final rate.

EURO

it has been a tough week for eUr/USd bulls, with the pair continuing to decline, having dropped by around 1.7% during last week. as of yesterday (thursday), the pair slipped below 1.0760, which is a two-month low for the pair. Given that we were recently trading at a one-year top (above 1.1050), the turnaround has been quite spectacular. What has caused the move? Well, aside from the USd side of the pair (and that really matters), european data has played a part with news that regional inflation rose less than expected during april. headline inflation increased by 0.6%, against an expected 0.7% jump. however, core inflation remains at 5.6% on an annual basis, so that should still keep the eCB in a fairly hawkish mood.

You tell me that you raised the issue with your sister, asking why her kitchen was full of bad food, when she told the children off for eating it. The response was that she thought they needed to exercise self-control like she did. You also

tell me that your sister lived on cups of coffee all day. You want to help, but your comments were not welcome, so it’s probable that you will not be able to help. Unfortunately, we can’t run their lives for them, but you are concerned. I wonder how many people eat this way these days. Sometimes, there are no solutions, but you have said something, so your feelings are known.

After an early flight, we arrived in England to my sister’s house at lunchtime. We were offered nothing to eat. Eventually, after two hours a cup of coffee was made, and late afternoon, wine came out with sweets and chocolate. I knew my sister ate oddly herself, and long suspected that she had some kind of eating disorder, as she would never finish a meal and push her food away. Whilst there my husband and I were able to observe their eating habits up close. My sister, I knew, did not eat breakfast, and lunchtime routinely came and went. During our stay, cheese and biscuits were served at night, but around 9pm. I noticed her children (who are overweight), would come in, and as soon as the kitchen was empty, they would help themselves from the fridge and sneak off to their rooms to eat, intending not to be observed. The fridge was full to bursting with sugary, high in trans fat, processed snack food, but my sister would chastise the children constantly for being fat, and warned them they mustn’t Write to Sara in confidence. a p S eudonym W ill be u S ed if you WiS h. the venue and serve them in a different way. it was the beginning of a company that was being created, danra events. their first cart, 4 years ago, a completely handcrafted wooden cart, began as a trinket shop. Since then, they havedeveloped carts of popcorn, candyfloss, ice cream, and hotdogs.

Plenary session approves the construction of La Mata sports centre

the torrevieja town hall, in plenary session, has approved this morning the modification of the interior reform Plan (Pri) of the enclave 7, in delfin, danes and other streets, for the definitive construction of the Sports Pavilion of La Mata. the torrevieja town hall has had to modify the town planning regulations to make the most of the potential of the plot. thus, it has been

introduced the possibility that the space on the ground floor level of the building can be used by the many groups of La Mata for courses, activities of the associations in the area, choir rehearsals, meeting space for various groups, and, of course, sport. the building’s height and occupancy parameters have also had to be adjusted.

the future pavilion will be

located next to the access to La Mata, by the roundabout of the n-332, in the block comprised by the streets delfín, Francia and avenida de los daneses, with a construction budget of 5.6 million euros. it should be noted that the contracting board is already selecting the winning bid for the contract and, subsequently, the awarding and execution of the work will proceed.

“What are my options for watching UK TV in Spain?“ the options are:

1. Satellite dish – dependent on your location in Spain you will need a dish of 1.2 to 2.4 Metre diameter and an hd satellite receiver. remember that all BBC channels are now hd. Seek professional advice to determine what you need.

2. t V from your internet provider – many internet providers

Your tech questions answered by Brian Hoile of the Costa Blanca Technology Help Group, helping over 320 members with their PCs , smartphones and more. Group members can attend meetings in person or online using Zoom or Teams.

provide a limited number of UK channels.

3. Smart t V – Use a VPn to open BBC iPlayer, it V X, all4 or My5. For each UK iPlayer you will need to set up an account using an email address and password. Some t Vs have an input named “Screen Mirroring”. if you install a ‘Screen Mirroring” app on your mobile device you can play content from your mobile device on the t V.

4. non-Smart t V- provided you have spare hdMi connections you can use Chromecast, android t V Box or Fire Stick

5. Smartphone or tablet –Use Chromecast or Screen Mirroring to “caste” t V from your mobile device. to use Chromecast you need Google home app on your mobile device. You can then play content on your phone to the t V. this is better than Screen Mirroring as you can still use your phone for other things.

6. iPt V – Use an android Box, Fire Stick or Mag Box connected to an hdMi socket using a suitable iPt V application. if you have a specific question about your particle situation, send an email to cbtechnology. help@gmail.com

“Is there an alternative to using Google Maps for navigation?” i find the best alternative to be Waze.

Waze is a 100% free-of-charge, turn-by-turn GPS navigation application that provides realtime traffic updates and all kinds of cool social and geo-gaming elements that make commuting fun.

By simply driving around with Waze open on your device, you share real-time information that translates into traffic conditions and road structure. When you use Waze, you can also actively report to the community on traffic, accidents, police traps, blocked roads, weather conditions and much more.

“I have recently changed my mobile phone provider and now don’t have internet access when not using WiFi. What could be the problem?“

i am assuming you have inserted the SiM Card correctly and you have enabled “Mobile data” and you can make and receive phone calls. if so,you need to enter the correct information into the setting “access Point name (aPns)” to allow use of mobile data. Contact your service provider for details of what to enter or Google search for your provider’s aPn settings.

Ant & Dec shock fans as they quit Saturday Night Takeaway ahead of 20th series

Ant & Dec have sensationally quit Saturday Night Takeaway ahead of their 20th series, shocking their fans across the nation.

Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, both 47, have announced that the multiple BAFTA-winning show will take a break after 2024.

The pair will continue their exclusive working relationship with ITV, hosting hit shows including I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, Britain’s Got Talent and Limitless Win, all of which air across ITV1 and ITVX.

Ant said: ‘We love making Saturday Night Takeaway, but reaching the milestone of 20 series seemed like the perfect time to pause for a little while and catch our breath.’

Dec added: ‘We still have a momentous 20th series to look forward to first so we will do our best to go out (for now) with a bang in 2024!’

Can you lend A Helping Hand?

We would first like to thank everyone who responded to our advert and brought in supplies of food and children’s clothes and toys. We are based in Avenida Deva, San Luis and are open from 10-1 Tuesday and Friday. If you want to pop in and say hi to the volunteers and get an idea of the work we do, we would love to see you.

We are still desperately in need of children’s clothes for this summer along with any toys you can spare. Maybe even visit a charity shop and get some used toys there and pass onto us, that way 2 charities benefit.

This week sees a real need for tinned tomatoes, cheese slices, packet soup and any kind of pasta.

As always baby wipes are

always wanted and Mercadona sell a pack of three for just €3, so maybe you can add a packet and a tin of tomatoes to your weekly shop.

If you can help in any way, then there are various drop off points which can be found on our Facebook page, or alternatively, simply take your donations to the BIG FM studio in Quesada.

Terra Natura Benidorm joins a campaign to warn of the presence of invasive species in Spain

The Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park has joined the awareness campaign, promoted by AIZA (Spanish Association of Zoos and Aquariums), to warn about invasive species in Spain, and the impact they have on the survival of native species and the conservation of ecosystems.

As part of the initiative, which is part of the Invasive Species Week in Portugal and Spain, the park has designed an informative workshop so that visitors who come this week can learn about the main invasive species in both countries and become aware of this environmental problem.

By means of educational material such as cards, posters and drawings, their characteristics will be explained, including the zebra mussel, tiger mosquito, red palm weevil, American crab, gambusia fish, American pond turtle, Argentine parrot and Kramer’s parrot, collared dove, grey squirrel, amphibian chytrid fungus and the algae caulerpa racemosa or tree of heaven.

These species, as explained by the Education Department of Terra Natura Benidorm, are harmful to ecosystems and endanger biodiversity. The invasions of these species generate problems at an

ecological level, as native diversity is lost and the invaded habitats are degraded. The arrival of these animals can even lead to the local extinction of native species. In particular, islands and lakes are the natural areas most sensitive to this phenomenon.

On the other hand, they are economically damaging, as their incidence has a direct effect on agricultural activities and public health. In fact, they can even cause problems for crops, livestock and fisheries. Likewise, their presence entails a risk of transmission of exotic diseases, as they are vectors and reservoirs of diseases.

Terra Natura Benidorm is a nature and animal park dedicated to the care of animal species, with more than 1,500 animals of 200 different species (98 of which are protected or in danger of extinction), 30 conservation projects and 19 breeding programmes. Its surface area is divided into four areas representing the continents of America, Asia and Europe, and the Pangea area, inspired by the origin of the Earth. The tour of its facilities immerses visitors in the concept of zoo-immersion and otherness, and they can enjoy a wide range of entertainment activities.

Vanilla & cinnamon breakfast rice

Ingredients

200g wholemeal basmati rice

200ml whole milk

2 tsp vanilla extract

3 bay leaves

1 cinnamon stick

12 dried apricots split in half widthways (so they still look whole)

4 x 100ml pots bio yogurt

12 walnut halves, broken into pieces

Fickle wind tests sailors

The forecast said less than 3 knots of wind at 11.00 so the SAMM race day timings were changed to a later arrival at CTD and a later start on Sunday May 14th. Ten competitors in five boats entered.

The first race start was set for 12.15 when the wind was supposed to be NW 5-6 knots, but was it, oh no, it was W 3.5 knots at the gun so a slow start with Cuatro and Dos across together after 1min 50 secs and these two had a close battle throughout the race. The others started at staggered intervals until Vision crossed at 6 mins 10 secs. Maneuvering was difficult in the conditions and Uno grounded on the reef. Her crew had to clamber out

and stand on the reef to push her off. She finally started last.

6 mins and 15 secs into the race the wind built to 5.5 knots but then dropped off again then went N so all boats took over 21 minutes for the first lap.

So it continued throughout the race and boats only managed 3 or 4 laps before the finish.

The second race was started at 13.45 in a NWN 6 knot wind with Cuatro and Vision crossing together, quickly followed by Tres with Cuatro and Dos bringing up the rear 2 mins 15 secs later. Again the wind was fickle, constantly changing between W and N and varying between 6 and 10 knots, which kept all crews on the toes if they didn’t want to get caught

out.

As the boats were lapping at between 6 and 10 minutes, the about to finish signal was sounded after 53 minutes only for the wind to drop to nothing soon after then come back up again gradually from 1 to 5 knots from the E. This really caught all boats out and the final lap was much slower for everybody.

A real test of everybody’s skill in reacting to the wind changes which some managed better than others.

Results: First race Uno 618 secs, Cuatro 712 secs, Dos 779 secs. Second race Cuatro 391 secs, Tres 419 secs, Vision 457 secs.

Looking for a new diet plan that is easy to follow for Summer?

Look no further than the “Unknown Diet” - a simple and effective way to improve your health and lose weight.

What is the Unknown Diet?

The Unknown Diet is a low-carb, highfat diet that focuses on whole foods and natural ingredients. It is based on the principles of the ketogenic diet, but with a few key differences. Unlike the keto diet, which can be difficult to maintain long-term, the Unknown Diet is easy to stick to and can be sustained over time.

How does the Unknown Diet work?

The Unknown Diet works by putting your body into a state of ketosis. Ketosis is a metabolic state in which your body burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. By limiting your intake of carbohydrates and increasing your consumption of healthy fats, you can trigger ketosis and start burning fat for fuel.

What can you eat on the Unknown Diet?

The Unknown Diet is based on whole, natural foods. This means you can enjoy plenty of meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, and healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, and coconut oil. You should avoid processed foods, sugar, grains, and other high-carbohydrate foods.

Benefits of the Unknown Diet

The Unknown Diet has many benefits, including:

• Weight Loss: By limiting your intake of carbohydrates, you can lose weight quickly and easily.

• Improved Energy: When your body is in ketosis, it burns fat for energy

instead of carbohydrates. This can lead to improved energy levels and reduced fatigue.

• Better Mental Clarity: Many people on the Unknown Diet report improved mental clarity and focus.

• Reduced Inflammation: The Unknown Diet is high in antiinflammatory foods, which can help reduce inflammation in the body and improve overall health.

• Lower Risk of Chronic Disease: The Unknown Diet has been shown to reduce the risk of chronic diseases like heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.

How to start the Unknown Diet

Starting the Unknown Diet is easy. Simply follow these steps:

• Eliminate high-carbohydrate foods like bread, pasta, rice, and sugar from your diet.

• Increase your intake of healthy fats like olive oil, avocado, and coconut oil.

• Eat plenty of meat, fish, eggs, and vegetables.

• Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.

• Monitor your progress and adjust your diet as needed.

Tips for success on the Unknown Diet

Here are a few tips to help you succeed on the Unknown Diet:

• Meal Prep: Plan your meals ahead of time and prepare them in advance to avoid temptation.

• Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated to avoid fatigue and headaches.

• Get Enough Sleep: Aim for 7-8 hours

of sleep per night to support your body’s natural processes.

• Exercise Regularly: Incorporate regular exercise into your routine to support weight loss and overall health.

• Seek Support: Join a support group or find an accountability partner to stay motivated and on track.

Nine tips to prolong the life of your car

If you want your car to last, you need to take care of it. That means scheduled maintenance, checking your tire pressure, getting regular oil changes, understanding your car’s warning lights, and not ignoring strange noises. You also need to keep it clean, service your battery, protect your paint job, and park in shade. Follow these tips and you’ll prolong the life of your car.

Scheduled maintenance

It’s important to keep up with scheduled maintenance for your car in order to prolong its life. Here are 9 tips to help you do just that:

1. Check your owner’s manual to see when your car is due for servicing and stick to the schedule.

2. Check your tire pressure regularly and keep your tires inflated to the proper level. This will improve your gas mileage and also help prevent flats.

3. When it’s time for new tires, don’t skimp on quality. Cheap tires may save you money up front, but they won’t last as long or perform as well as a good set of tires.

4. Keep an eye on your brake pads and replace them when they start to get thin. Worn brakes can be dangerous and also damage other parts of your car, like the rotors.

5. Don’t wait until your “check engine” light comes on to take your car in for

service. By then, it may be too late and expensive to fix the problem.

6. Be sure to use the recommended type and grade of motor oil for your car. Using a lower quality oil can shorten the life of your engine.

7. Have any unusual noises or vibrations checked out as soon as possible by a qualified mechanic.

Check your tyre pressure

According to Consumer Reports, properly inflated tyres can help prolong the life of your car. Check your tyre pressure at least once a month, and before long trips. You can find the proper inflation levels for your tyres in your car’s owner’s manual or on the placard usually located on the driver’s doorjamb.

Get regular oil changes

Assuming you own a car, one of the ways you can prolong its life is by getting regular oil changes. How often you need to change your oil depends on both the type of vehicle you own as well as the type of oil that you’re using, but it’s generally recommended to get an oil change every 5,000 miles or so. Not only will this help to keep your engine clean and running smoothly, but it will also help to improve your gas mileage.

Understand your car’s warning lights

Your car’s warning lights are there for a reason - to warn you of potential problems. By understanding what

each light means, you can take the appropriate action to fix the problem and help prolong the life of your car.

Don’t ignore strange noises

If you’re driving and you hear a strange noise, don’t ignore it! It could be a sign that something is wrong with your car. If you keep driving, it could make the problem worse and end up costing you more money in repairs.

Keep it clean

Assuming you take care of the big things - like oil changes, tune-ups, and brakes - here are a few more tips to get even more life out of your car.

1. Keep it clean - both inside and out. A clean car will last longer than one that’s full of dirt and grime.

2. Park in a garage or carport whenever possible. This will protect your car from the elements and extend its life.

3. Check your tires regularly. making sure they’re properly inflated

and have enough tread will help prevent flats and blowouts, which can damage your car.

4. Don’t overload your car with unnecessary weight. The extra strain on the engine and suspension can cause problems down the road.

5. Drive responsibly - avoid hard braking, acceleration, and cornering whenever possible. These activities put unnecessary stress on the car, which can lead to premature wear and tear.

Service Your battery

If you want your car to last, you need to take care of it. That means regular tune-ups, oil changes, and yes – servicing your battery. A battery service includes cleaning the terminals and checking the fluid level. This is something you can do yourself, or you can take it to a professional. Either way, it’s an important part of taking care of your car.

Protect your paint job

One of the best ways to prolong the life of your car is to protect your paint job. A good paint job can last for years, but it needs to be properly protected from the elements. Waxing and polishing your car regularly will help to keep the paint looking new, and washing it regularly will remove any dirt or debris that could damage the paint. If you live in an area with a lot of sun, you may also want to invest in a good quality car cover to protect your paint job from fading.

Park in shade

If you want to prolong the life of your car, one tip is to park in shade. This will help keep your car cooler and prevent premature wear and tear.

Conclusion

These 9 tips are sure to help you prolong the life of your car. By following these simple tips, you can keep your car running smoothly for years to come. So don’t neglect your car, and be sure to take good care of it!
