Five teens arrested for Dolores rape

Crowds gathered recently in the Dolores Town Hall square to publicly and absolutely condemn any type of violence against women.

The rally called by the council to commemorate the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and follows a shocking sexual assault of a minor in

the town.

Neighbours, students and teachers from the municipality’s public schools carried banners and posters of support on which slogans against violence could be read.

There was a minutes silence for all the female victims.

Five teenage boys, aged between

15 and 17, have been apprehended and put into juvenile detention centres after being accused of sexually assaulting the 15-year-old girl in Dolores. The arrests were made by the Guardia Civil, following a complaint filed by the victim.

The accused boys argued that the girl had given consent to engage in sexual activity. However, considering the age of the victim, who is under 16, such consent is not legally valid, leading to the youths being charged with sexual assault.

The victim, who admitted to consuming alcohol, provided information to the Guardia Civil at their Dolores barracks, revealing that she was acquainted with some of the alleged attackers. Investigators have reportedly seized a mobile phone belonging to one of the teens, believed to contain a recording of the incident.

Alicante’s Juvenile Court responded to the Prosecutor’s Office’s request by ordering the boys to be remanded into custody at youth detention centres across the Valencia region. This decision underscores the severity of the charges and aims to ensure the safety of the victim while the legal process unfolds.

This marks the second incident of a group rape investigation involving minors in the southern part of Alicante province within a span of two months. In September, eight underage teenage boys were arrested

in Crevillente for the alleged sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl over five consecutive days. These incidents highlight the pressing need for awareness and preventive measures to address such concerning trends

among youth. Authorities continue to emphasise the importance of educating young individuals about consent and responsible behaviour.

As of 30th September, there were a total of 376 men in prison convicted of crimes of gender violence in the province of Alicante, a figure that represents 35 percent of the total Valencian Community figure.

A total of 49 municipalities have access to the VioGén system in the province, a coordination tool to care for and protect victims of sexist violence. These measures allow the local police in these municipalities to be added to the network already formed by the Civil Guard and the National Police in dealing with such offences. in Spain as a whole, a total of 52 women have been murdered by their partners this year, two more than in 2023. In the province of Alicante, two of these crimes have been committed, both fatalities being British women murdered in Orihuela.

Festive fun and fundraising with the annual Santa Walk Maria and the Pink Ladies will be holding its annual Santa Walk from Zenia Boulevard, the date for this year’s walk is Sunday 3rd December 2023. The walk, roughly a 5k circuit, will start at approximately 11am from the central stage area at Zenia Boulevard and finish at the same place. The registration fee is €5 per person, with children under the age of 14 taking part for free. Every penny, or should that be cent, will be donated to local anti-cancer charity AACC. This year the event welcomes the “Stone Media Rocks” choir singing festive songs and carols before the walk starts and returns. Simon Morton of Sunshine FM will also be in attendance playing Christmas tunes to fill everyone with festive fun.

The world calls for an end to violence against women On the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, people worldwide rallied to address the alarming prevalence of violence affecting women, with the World Health Organisation revealing that one in three women globally experiences violence in their lifetime.

The Council of Europe highlighted that 12% to 15% of women in Europe endure domestic violence daily, prompting widespread demands for stronger action.

In France, tens of thousands filled the

streets of Paris and other major cities, while Spain, in response to the escalating issue, fortified its laws. However, campaigners cautioned that emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, are facilitating new forms of violence against women.

Ana Redondo, Spain’s Minister for Equality, emphasised the importance of amplifying the voices of women and feminists against all types of violence.

In Madrid, she joined the ranks of tens of thousands of marchers demanding

change.

The recent tragic killing of a 22-yearold student in Rome, allegedly by an exboyfriend, intensified the significance of the day in Italy. Similar rallies resonated across the United States, Latin America, and Asia, underscoring the global nature of the issue.

Beyond domestic settings, conflictrelated sexual violence continues to plague regions like the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Armed groups exploit women and girls through child trafficking,

kidnapping, and coerced sex work in North and South Kivu provinces, where decadeslong conflicts persist over control of mineral wealth. Shockingly, these crimes often remain hidden, with the United Nations estimating that for every reported case, 10 to 20 instances of sexual violence connected to conflicts go undocumented.

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women serves as a poignant reminder of the urgent need for collective global efforts to eradicate gender-based violence in all its forms.

Animals at Terra Natura Brussels issues economic treated for Osteoarthritis Veterinarians at Terra Natura Park in Benidorm are currently attending to three of their animal inhabitants suffering from osteoarthritis, a condition not limited to humans. The affected trio includes a peccary (which resembles a pig), a rhea bird, and a goat, all grappling with the rheumatic disease in their limbs.

To address the ailment, the peccary and rhea are undergoing treatment with anti-inflammatory drugs, while the goat is receiving cortico-steroids. The prescribed treatments are scheduled for an initial duration of 10 days, after which the animals will undergo further assessment to gauge their progress.

The veterinary team identified the issue a few days ago when some of the park’s residents exhibited a slight limp.

Given the advanced age of the animals, estimated to be between 15 and 20 years old, equivalent to 75 to 80 human years, veterinarians diagnosed them with osteoarthritis. In older animals, degeneration of tissues, particularly joint tissues, is relatively common.

Untreated osteoarthritis can significantly impact an animal’s mobility and engagement with its environment. In some cases, it may lead to a cessation of walking and interaction, with the potential consequence of reduced appetite, posing a threat to their overall wellbeing. The ongoing veterinary care aims to alleviate the discomfort caused by osteoarthritis and ensure the continued health and vitality of these aged residents at Terra Natura park.

forecast for Spain The European Commission in Brussels has released its latest economic prognosis for Spain, forecasting robust growth yet raising concerns about the nation’s ability to meet fiscal requirements by 2024. Spain, one of the top four largest economies in the European Union alongside Germany, France, and Italy, is expected to be among the fastest-growing member states, with a projected gross domestic product (GDP) growth of 2.4% by the end of 2023.

This growth is primarily attributed to consumer spending, indicating a resilient economy. However, the Commission anticipates a slight dip in growth to 1.7% in the following year, with a subsequent rebound to 2% by 2025. Notably, Spain stands out as the only major economy in this quartet poised to experience growth exceeding 1.5% over the next two years, setting it apart from potential contractions in Germany, as per the Commission’s report.

Despite its economic vitality, Spain is grappling with a shift in its inflation dynamics. Traditionally holding the position of having the lowest inflation among the largest EU economies, Spain’s inflation rate has now risen to 3.5%, up from below 3% earlier this month. The surge is predominantly attributed to a spike in the cost of groceries, particularly food and nonalcoholic beverages, witnessing a 9.4% inflation rate in Spain. Though a slight decrease from September’s 10.5%, it

remains notably higher than the Eurozone’s current average of 7.5%.

Contrary to the general trend in the Eurozone, where inflation has been gradually decreasing to 2.9% in October, Spain has experienced a divergence in recent weeks.

While the Eurozone inflation rate plays a crucial role in determining the Euribor (Euro Interbank Offered Rate), it is expected to rise again before the end of 2023. The Euribor, influenced by the European Central Bank’s target inflation rate of 2%, witnessed record hikes, rising from below zero to over 4% in less than a year and a half.

Spain’s challenge extends beyond inflation concerns. Despite predictions of higher-than-average growth and relatively standard inflation, the Commission warns that Spain is likely to fall short of meeting stipulated deficit levels in 2024. The Commission notes that Spain’s deficit has become ‘structural,’ persisting irrespective of economic performance, consistently remaining 3% above its GDP. The government’s commitment to reducing the imbalance in public accounts, limiting the deficit to a maximum of 3%, may prove challenging, with the Commission expressing doubt unless ‘something exceptional happens.’

Financial challenges The fiscal situation is compounded by Spain’s overall debt, expected to reach 107.5% of its GDP by the end of this year.

While a gradual decrease to 106.5% is anticipated, the debt level is projected to plateau at this level in the medium term. Brussels, which had relaxed fiscal rules in response to the pandemic, is set to reinstate the ‘GDP+3%’ ceiling from 2024 onwards. Failure to comply with this rule, keeping debts within 103% of GDP, could result in significant fines and fiscal stipulations.

Spain is not alone in facing these challenges; the Commission anticipates that ‘at least a dozen’ EU member states will miss the GDP+3% cutoff point in 2024. France and Italy, in particular, are predicted to have deficits well above 104% of their GDP next year.

As the economic landscape evolves, Spain finds itself at a crucial juncture, navigating growth, inflation, and deficit challenges that will shape its economic trajectory in the coming years.

Sánchez’s re-election Satellite technology to ushers in female-led rescue Europe’s forests government As previously reported, Spain’s recently re-elected Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez secured a renewed mandate, receiving the backing of 179 lawmakers in the country’s 350-seat parliament. However, his victory was not without opposition, as 171 deputies from the centre-right Popular Party and the far-right Vox voted against his re-election.

In a noteworthy move toward gender equality, the newly formed government, unveiled recently, will see women occupying 12 out of 22 ministerial posts. Prime Minister Sánchez emphasised the government’s feminist orientation, highlighting the inclusion of four women deputy prime ministers and a higher number of female ministers than their male counterparts.

“The new government is going to have a marked feminist accent with four women deputy prime ministers and more female ministers than male ministers,”

Sánchez declared.

While some key posts remain unchanged, the Cabinet will welcome nine new ministers.

Notable continuations include Nadia Calviño in the economy portfolio, José Manuel Albares overseeing foreign affairs, and Margarita Robles retaining the defence portfolio.

Ecstacy pills and cocaine seized in Albatera The Civil Guard of Dolores and the Local Police of Albatera arrest a woman, identified by the agents during a routine verification of people and vehicles in Albatera, who was carrying 88 ecstasy pills and a dose of cocaine inside the car with the one that circulated. The 25-year-old woman, who has a history of similar acts, has been arrested as the alleged perpetrator of a crime against public health for drug trafficking and placed at the disposal of the Investigative Court number 3 of Orihuela. The seized drug has been sent to be reviewed and sent to the Health Area

Alarming statistics from the European Commission’s report indicate that nearly half (43 percent) of the scorched land in the preceding year encroached upon Natura 2000 sites. These protected areas constitute a network safeguarding Europe’s most

invaluable and imperilled species and habitats. This figure represents the highest impact on Natura 2000 sites in the past decade.

Disturbingly, the report highlights that a staggering 96 percent of the 2022 fires were a result of human actions, exacerbated by escalating fire danger conditions propelled by climate change. While EU nations have intensified preventative measures and enhanced preparedness for surging wildfires, traditional firefighting methods are grappling with the heightened temperature, intensity, and speed of these infernos.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP The biggest news of the week came from the Autumn Statement on Wednesday 22nd November. The government’s announcement didn’t significantly impact the pound (it fell 0.6% against the dollar in the immediate aftermath), however, it did drive speculation around the next general election, seemingly fuelling speculation around a snap election in the spring. The FTSE100 also fell by 0.4% on the day, but there appeared to be an uptick in the price of shares in pub companies, thanks to the alcohol duty freeze.

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt cut National Insurance by more than expected, taking the tax rate from 12% to 10% from the 6th January. Two self-employment National Insurance taxes were also scrapped or reduced, saving the average self-employed person £192 per year.

Businesses were the big benefactors of Hunt’s ‘110 measures for growth’, with his decision to make ‘full expensing’ permanent, which represents a tax cut of about £10bn.

The Office of Budget Responsibility also downgraded the UK’s growth forecast. GDP is now expected to rise by 0.6% this year, higher than the previously expected -0.2%. Given the US holiday yesterday, the currency reaction was perhaps a bit muted, but we’ll be keeping an eye on the pair – now it is back to business across the pond with its Services and Manufacturing PMIs released today.

Next week is relatively quiet on the data front for the UK, although the Bank of England’s Governor Andrew Bailey is due to deliver a short speech at the 50th Anniversary of the London Stock Exchange on Wednesday 29th November.

EUR We saw a host of Manufacturing and Services PMI data released from across the European Union and the UK this week.

The downturn in business activity seemed to ease this month, with the composite PMI Output Index for the Euro Area rising to 47.1 from October’s near three-year low of 46.5. The outcome was above analysts’ forecasts, but it remains below the key 50 mark that would indicate growth.

The services sector PMI rose to 48.2 from 47.8, and the manufacturing industry PMI rose to 43.8 from 43.1, both beating expectations but remaining significantly below the key 50 thresholds again.

Data was also released for Germany and France.

Germany’s contracting economy showed signs of easing this month, with composite PMI data rising to 47.1 from 45.0 after both the manufacturing and services PMI data came in higher than expected.

France’s business activity also contracted again this month, but with both the service and manufacturing PMIs coming in lower than expected.

There was little reaction from the EURUSD, perhaps due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

Next week, CPI inflation data is due to be released across the region.

Callosa de Segura will transform its urban landscape with strategic investments The Callosa de Segura City Council is immersed in the preparation of new actions through strategic investments that will be carried out from 2024. Specifically, the MUDIC has been recognized for awakening vocations among

children.

The event, held at the headquarters of the Official College of Physicians of Alicante, was part of the celebration of Peace Day 2023, organized under the motto ‘The child, hope for the future’. Moors and Christians troups recycled 5 kilos of glass during local festivities The Reconquest of Glass, an initiative launched by Ecovidrio, a non-profit entity in charge of managing the recycling of glass containers in Spain, in collaboration with the Generalitat Valenciana and the Orihuela City Council, manages to recover 5,600 kg of glass containers during the Moors and Christians festivities.

The Councilor for Street Cleaning and MSW, Rocío Ortuño , presented this Friday the award to the winning troupe of this edition, Moros Nazaríes de Aben-Humeya , together with Manuel Salas, representing Ecovidrio, the president of the Festival Association of Moros y Cristianos Santas Justa y Rufina, Manolo Ortuño, and the president of the award-winning troupe, Manuel Lorente.

The Oriolana councilor thanked “all the groups for their involvement in collecting waste at source, because it is important that in events of these characteristics we all collaborate to promote recycling in Orihuela.”

On average, each partygoer has recycled 1.12 kg of glass containers in the containers assigned to the campaign.

Orihuela participates in the Atabales category , which includes municipalities that have more than 2,500 festeros.

During the holidays, a team

of educators has carried out environmental awareness actions on the streets to raise awareness among citizens about the recycling of glass containers and the importance of promoting sustainable holidays.

The Nazaríes Comparsa has been the winner of the raffle for a beverage dispenser made of glass and personalized with the campaign image. With this gesture, Ecovidrio rewards the effort made to achieve more sustainable and environmentally friendly festivals.

Glass recycling data in Orihuela According to the latest available data corresponding to 2022, the citizens of Orihuela recycled a total of 2,732,498 kilograms of glass containers.

This means that each citizen recycled an average of 33.8 kilograms of glass.

Regarding the containerization rate, Orihuela has an average of 97.3 inhabitants per container, currently having a total of 830 igloos for glass container waste installed in the municipality.

A new phase of the 2023 VOX Orihuela boycotted N25 resurfacing plan awarded march as it is a “gender ideology The councillor for Infrastructures, Town Planning Management and Accessibility of the Torrevieja Town Hall, Sandra Sánchez, has announced, following the approval of the final award at last weeks ordinary meeting of the Town Council, that in the next few weeks work will begin on a new phase included in the Resurfacing Plan 2023.

combine handball with tourism and fun. Crescendo International Choir performed two concerts in November

Crescendo International Choir performed a well-received concert Sunday evening, November 12th at the Club in Quesada. This standing-room only event raised 650 Euros for the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal, which supports military veterans and their families. The following Saturday night, November 18th, the choir performed a concert at Salt Church in Los Montesinos, raising almost 300 euros for the Salt Church.

Some of the songs performed at these concerts included What a Wonderful World, made famous by Louis Armstrong, New York, New York, made famous by Frank Sinatra, To Make You Feel My Love, made famous by Adele,

Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen, Memories, from the popular musical Cats and You Raise Me Up, sung by many different artists.

On Saturday, December 2nd, the choir will give a concert at the Catholic Church in Benijofar after the 19:00 mass is over. And on Thursday, December 14th, they will give a Christmas music concert at La Siesta Church in Torrevieja at 18:30. The following night they will give a concert at Plaza de Constitution in Torrevieja, along with three other choirs, at 18:00. Lastly, the choir plans a Christmas concert on Saturday, December 16, at the Club in Quesada at 18:30.

Choir rehearsals take place at Rincon de Miguel in Los

Montesinos between 17:15 to 19:45 every Thursday. Starting in January 2024, rehearsals will take place on the same day and time but will be held at the Club in Quesada.

Things that cannot be scripted Those of us who were brought up with panto know that the real protagonists are the members of the audience. As children we joined in with the boos, cheers and aaahhs and some of us may have memories of going up onto the stage to sing a simple song along with the stars of the show.

This aspect has always been a bit of a challenge for the ADAPT Theatre group as usually around fifty percent of the audience are Spanish, for whom the traditions of British pantomime, dame and principal boy included, seem rather strange to say the least.

However, over the years that the theatre group has been performing in San Pedro, our traditions have become a little more familiar, helped by the involvement every year of local school children.

What we can never script are the reactions of children to our actors’ attempts at Spanish, including all our mistakes, both deliberate and otherwise. It’s not unusual for a young voice to shout out corrections, much to the amusement of both audience and cast.

Inviting children onto the stage is another novelty which is now anticipated and we usually get a good number of little ones encouraged by the mums and dads to take part. We try to choose tunes with actions that are well known, our greatest success being “Baby Shark”

which was popular when we performed Peter Pan. All these types of audience participation, which make panto what it is, are present in this year’s show, to the enjoyment of all concerned not least those of us who are performing.

Only a few more days before the Adapt Theatre Group’s hilarious new pantomime “Ali Baba and the Four and a Half Thieves” opens in San Pedro del Pinatar. Tickets are moving fast and, if previous years are to go by, the performances will be sell-outs!

Singalong with Christine Campoverde Church regular, Christine Eames, has found a new way of taking the work of the Church out into the wider community. Professional musician Christine has spent her life in music, involving broadcasting, theatre, teaching and directing choirs. Since she came to Spain in 2004 Christine has been active in several musical ventures including directing local choirs Coro Pilar and Chorale in major musical productions including Handel’s Messiah and Mendelssohn’s Elijah.

Her latest venture has involved taking music out into the wider community. Christine said, “I noticed that a number of people would like to sing but did not necessarily want the formality or commitment of being in a choir.”. Armed with her years of experience Christine set up her “Singalong with Christine” group that meets weekly in Campoverde

Church Hall (The Shed).

Christine said of the Singalong group, “We are very informal and mainly sing well k n o w n popular songs in English and now also Christmas Carols which we will be taking out to a number of local residential homes for the elderly.

Campoverde Church Warden Maggie Dew said, “This is a fantastic initiative by Christine, and we are very proud of her; she has changed the lives of many local people by getting them out of their homes, meeting others and becoming involved in the community.

Spain’s only true, traditional Christmas shop is right under our noses!

It started for Lucy the owner 14 years ago, and grew and grew…well, unless you’ve been in there in which case it feels like it’s shrunk. Sometimes it feels like there’s so many Christmas items, that there’s not enough room for customers!

However, somehow it works. The Christmas shop Spain is a little gem.

It’s crazy and deliveries arrive every day, while customers walk in with their mouths open at what they see when they step inside.

There are Santa’s everywhere, baubles and tree decs in every colour you can imagine. Fibre optic trees shine bright alongside green, snowy, gold and pink trees; trees from teenyweeny to 10ft tall. For those that love to bake there’s loads of cake decorations and cake plates - which are usually so hard to find in Spain.

Then there’s the card section, which caters for every family combination you can imagine: ‘Daughter and Girlfriend’… they

have it! ‘Granddaughter and family’ ..Yep! ‘The Man I Love’… yep. ‘Neice and Boyfriend’ yep… the list is endless in fact it’s a bit of a challenge for customers to think of random combinations where the answer isn´t yep.

The lighting range comes with a 2-year guarantee (try getting that in the chino bizarre).

If you haven’t visited The Christmas shop, please, please pop in – you have no idea what you’re missing.

It is incredible and puts most UK Christmas shops to shame, and the best thing is, it’s right on our doorstep.

Santa’s busy, come on let’s be honest as if he could be sitting in Lakeside in December - he’s obviously making toys and controlling naughty elves, but he has made a special effort for local children in need and has visited for a long weekend with Mrs Christmas before the rush. It was a magical time, there was snow and a Santa Express. The presents

were fabulous and of course he knew every child’s name, which is unbelievable cos he’s old… trust me it really was him.

Money was raised for Elche Childrens Care Home and for a single local good cause.

Every year, thanks to The Christmas Shop someone gets a much needed donation.

The most striking thing about this shop is that the staff absolutely love it and making your Christmas wishes start to come true is what they do best, so pop in…. and try to close your mouth as you walk in, because you will be gobsmacked!

What does the group offer?

I present a class on the second Wednesday of each month from 10:00 to 12:00 at Dilly’s Bar Av. Before each meeting, I email

all group members detailing what will be covered during that meeting. Following the meeting, each group member receives an email with a copy of the presentations used.

I offer email and telephone support.

I also offer home visits if required.

After a home visit, I will send by email a detailed report of what tasks I performed during the visit for your future reference. After a home visit, I send a detailed summary of what I did to help the group member.

If required, I can remotely connect to your laptop or computer (with your permission) while in telephone contact and sort out issues or show you how to do things you might be having trouble with.

I only charge for any “out-ofpocket” expenses - i.e., travel etc.

I do not charge for my time spent helping group members.

If you are a group member, I will send updates and copies of the presentations given at the classes.

Age Concern Three Wheels on my Wagon said the ticket. It was attached to a mobility walker at a very reasonable price and was standing alongside various other mobility aids. Not the sort of things you would necessarily expect to find at a Christmas Fayre. Except this wasn’t just any Christmas Fayre. This was the Age Concern Costa Blanca Christmas Fayre held at their HQ at La Siesta, Torrevieja on Saturday. Those who attended came by car, on foot and with some assistance, all intent on picking up some bargains.

They were not disappointed.

On many stalls everything was just one euro and with such a vast variety of goods on display there really was something for everyone. There were handbags and accessories, linens and cushions, jewellery, cakes and on the bric a brac stall a fascinating collection of everything from a huge casserole dish to an icing syringe and just about everything in between. Bargains were soon being snapped up this being a wonderful opportunity for some early Christmas present shopping while supporting a good cause at the same time.

And once the retail therapy side had been exhausted what better than to sit in the sun and enjoy

a cup of tea and a mince pie.

Something more substantial?

Then maybe a warm sausage roll. Father Christmas made an appearance as well and as it was 21° he was spotted taking a well earned rest chatting to people at the mobility stall. Let’s hope his sleigh will be skyworthy

by Christmas Eve. Then, to conclude the morning The Melody Makers, making their public debut, led some seasonal singing which was thoroughly enjoyed. Even the raffle was different in that the first name out of the hat won an ‘Eat your way around the world’ voucher

to sample the cuisines in Chinese, Indian, English, Greek and Spanish restaurants. A truly scrumptious experience. There was also the opportunity to win a huge hamper of Christmas goodies . And the best news.

At the end of the morning when all the monies had been counted it was revealed that the magnificent sum of 2,476 euros had been raised. This will enable Age Concern Costa Blanca, in this their Silver Jubilee Year, to carry on the excellent work they do in assisting the elderly in so many different ways across the region.

Men’s Health Month: When should men get a checkup?

Quirónsalud joins the Movember initiative to raise awareness about prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health in men November is Men’s Health Month.

This initiative, promoted by Movember, aims to address men’s health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health and suicide prevention.

The movement began in Australia in 2003, when a group of friends decided to grow their moustaches in the month of November as a way to raise funds and awareness about prostate cancer and testicular cancer.

What started as a local initiative has grown into a global phenomenon that has raised millions of dollars for charities and inspired men around the world to get involved.

The reality is that men die, on average, 4.5 years earlier than women, from causes that are primarily preventable.

For this reason, Quirónsalud has joined this movement, with the aim of focusing on the importance of prevention. Drs. Alejandro Pascual and Alexandr Zhiganov and Dr. Amparo Míguez, have provided fundamental information on prevention and checkups of men’s health.

Dr. Zhiganov, specialist in general medicine and coordinator of checkups at Quirónsalud Torrevieja, stresses the importance of medical check-ups at different stages of life.

According to World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines, the frequency of checkups varies

depending on age and individual risk factors.

Dr. Zhiganov explains that, generally speaking, it is recommended to have a check-up every four years before the age of 40, then every two years until the age of 60, and finally, one year after this age.

However, it indicates that the individual situation of each person (tobacco use, alcohol, etc.), as well as a family history of hereditary diseases, can influence the frequency of checkups.

What does a medical check-up consist of?

The medical check-up is a process that consists of several stages, such as a personal interview with the doctor to learn about the medical history and current lifestyle habits, and a general examination to assess the state of health and detect possible pathologies or risk situations.

When to see a urologist?

For her part, Dr. Amparo Míguez, urologist at Quirónsalud Torrevieja, stresses that prevention is the best medicine “all men should have urological check-ups once a year when they pass the threshold of 45 or 50 years (if they do not have hereditary risk factors), because at this age some pathologies related to the natural aging process begin to develop”.

According to the expert, these check-ups are key to early diagnosis and treatment of serious problems,

some of which are asymptomatic until they are already in an advanced stage, such as prostate cancer.

The specialist in urology at Quirónsalud Torrevieja indicates that “you must go to the urologist in the event of any symptoms, pain or discomfort in the genito-urinary area, changes in the organolectic characteristics (smell, colour, appearance ,…) of urine, or suspicion of some genital expansive process that is developing and that could have been discovered/identified in the selfexamination.”

The doctor explains that the main urological problems in young people between 18-20 years old can arise from their adolescence and are related to the beginning of sexual life. More broadly, between the ages of 18 and 30, “it is common for the urologist to treat urinary tract infections, kidney stones, sexually transmitted diseases/ infections (STDs/STIs) and, in some cases of men, erectile dysfunction (ED) issues.”

In addition, Míguez specifies that “testicular cancer develops at an early age, so young people must be alerted to go to the urologist if any abnormality is discovered in the testicles”. Testicular cancer is the second most common cancer among young men worldwide.

However, the specialist stresses that men go to the urologist for the first time between the ages of 45 and 50 for their general check-up if they do not have any symptoms. “They especially come if certain lower urinary tract (LUTS)

symptoms have begun to appear, for example, getting up at night to urinate (nocturia) or that the urine stream has less strength and calibre. But among the most serious are prostate diseases, especially prostate cancer.”

How is prostate cancer diagnosed?

There are two common tests for initial detection and, depending on the result of these tests, a biopsy will be performed.

For the diagnosis, PSA will be performed, a blood test that looks for the presence in the blood of a protein specifically produced by prostate cells. “It is the prostate marker, it is not specific for cancer, but it allows its levels to be monitored throughout the adult life of the male. If it rises, it’s an indicator that further investigation is needed.”

Even so, according to the specialist, the digital rectal exam is still an important tool in the physical examination to complete the diagnosis.

Urological check-ups over 60 years old At this stage of life, the most common problems are usually related to lower urinary tract symptoms due to prostatic obstruction and erectile dysfunction.

The urologist also points out Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), “a noncancerous enlargement of the prostate, which becomes more prevalent after the age of 60.” Prostate cancer, on the other hand, “is a cancer that affects men from the age of 50 and is uncommon

in the 40s, being almost non-existent before,” the doctor points out.

Cardiology check-ups A cardiovascular check-up is a medical check-up that consists of determining the state of the heart and circulatory system in order to identify the main causes of coronary risk.

Current recommendations state that men over the age of 45 should have their cardiovascular risk assessed.

Dr. Alejandro Pascual, head of Cardiology at Quirónsalud Alicante, explains that in this review, an assessment should be carried out aimed at looking for cardiological symptoms or cardiovascular disease, as well as a clinical and analytical assessment in search of the presence of cardiovascular risk factors.

All this to prevent cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, dyslipidaemia or diabetes mellitus.

How often should I have a cardiovascular check-up?

According to the expert, we should assess cardiovascular risk every five years, “or sooner if we are at a risk level close to needing treatment for heart disease.”

Prevention, essential to take care of your health Prevention is fundamental to health care. “Not only does it prevent the emergence and spread of diseases, but it also reduces the need for more expensive treatments and other health care,” says Dr. Zhiganov.

The Balaton Group recently held it’s 2023 AGM when one of the founder members Terry Chapman stepped down. Terry had served as treasurer since the group was formed and, in recognition, was presented with a range of gifts plus Honorary Membership for life.

The group jointly own, maintain and sail four 6 meter day sail boats on the

Mar Menor. Three Sailfish 18`s which are kept on swinging moorings at Los Narejos and are used for cruising and racing in the SAMM weekly races. The other is a Spanish Araez Arabel which is berthed in the marina at Los Urrutias.

Such group ownership keeps the cost of sailing for the members very low, provides a large group of friends with which to sail and the four boats gives

unlimited sailing opportunities.

The group has been successful in attracting a number of new members during the past year and membership now stands at 28, but more are always welcome.

An interesting fact emerged at the AGM when the group realised that it is truly international with members or their partners hailing from England,

Scotland, Northern Ireland, Eire, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Columbia, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Ukraine.

Most now call Spain their permenant home but a few are holiday home owners.

Imanyo Golf Society Dave Rotchell Salver at El Plantio Twenty-eight players took part in this the ninth year of the Dave Rotchell Salver; unfortunately, Dave could not be with us again this year. As usual we started with the traditional English breakfast in Imanyo’s before we had the draw, the format was Stableford split into two groups. On arriving at El Plantio golf we found the course in excellent condition from tee boxes to flags, for those in the UK it was once again perfect weather and some players still in shorts, by 10.30 it was sunny and a very pleasant 75 degrees.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 21st of November we fished the 6th round of the Winter series at the El Bosquet complex near to Crevillent.

The warm mornings have now vanished and their is definitely a nip in the air first thing in a morning.

Having said that the match was fished in lovely clear and eventually sunny conditions.

Nineteen anglers turned out and we were spread out between sections A1 to 7 and 26 to 40.
