Record total raised by Rock Against Cancer

Rock Against Cancer achieves the largest donation in its history in its sixth edition 2023: a total of no less than €20,000. On 11th October, €10,000 was presented to Manoli Flores, President of Alicante Para La Lucha Contra el Cáncer and another €10,000 to Victoria Meneses, President of AFECÁNCER, both attending with members of their boards of directors. The event took place in the Viking Assistance Group building, located in

the heart of Torrevieja, and home to one of the main sponsors of this charity festival, which has been running since 2015. Janet Figueroa expressed on behalf of the entire Organising Committee, and on behalf of Neil Wyatt, who could not be present at the event, their deepest gratitude, both to volunteers, artists, sponsors, collaborators and the public, for all the support received. It is a lot of hard work, and it is continuous, with all

the responsibility and dedication that goes with it. “What makes us all most happy is that the entire donation goes directly to help our community,” she added. The first Rock Against Cancer festival took place in 2015. In 2009, the Wyatt brothers made a donation to the AECC when they celebrated the 20th anniversary of Monroe’s Rock Café in the Eras de Sal. Years later, Neil welcomed Janet on board to organise a music festival specifically to raise funds for the cancer cause.

The first two editions (2015 and 2017) took place on Apolo Street, in front of Monroe’s Music Pub. The response was massive, and the public really enjoyed all the activities and food trucks on the street. Due to the pandemic, we were forced to cancel the 5th edition in 2020. Safety comes first, so we had the initiative to organize small concerts in various venues on the Costa Blanca, with the great support and commitment of Robert Grumheden from VIKING ASSISTANCE and Lars Andersen of

DVBLAB. In this way we also support our local businesses and artists with safe culture, holding smaller events in collaboration with local bars/ restaurants, always complying with the regulations required by health authorities during that time. This year’s lineup once again featured two of Denmark’s most important tribute bands: Almost AC/ DC and Bryan Adams Tribute Band DK, who were a real success at the last concert. In addition to our local bands, we welcomed for the first time the band THE BOSS - Tribute to Springsteen, who will make us vibrate with their entire “Street Band”. The big news was the SAD European Metallica Tribute from Italy This year also saw the Madrid band Linkoln Park, who kicked off their Meteora 2023-2024 tour at Rock Against Cancer.

Money raised to fight cancer On Friday 13th October Maria and the Pink Ladies held another event to mark International Breast Cancer Awareness month, held at The Sports Bar, Flamenca Beach Commercial Centre. The day was extremely well supported by the people of Orihuela Costa and more than €1,500 was raised. The coins are still being counted and the total will be announced as soon as it is available. Alli and all her

staff worked extremely hard to serve the hungry, thirsty crowd. The money was raised through a raffle, tombola and guess the weight of the cake. The cake was baked by Amy of Sunshine FM and won by Mary Bailey, €100 was also donated by the bar. Entertainment was provided by Dianna Daiz, Margaret McDonald, Chloe Leigh, Rebecca Holt, Valentino and Blues Brothers tribute featuring

Alfie and Leigh. Simon Morton from Sunshine FM hosted the event. A TV crew from Bargain Loving Brits in the Sun filmed on the day for the Channel 5 program. Charity walk raises thousands for local children More than 50 people completed a 4km walk in Torrevieja recently and raised more than 2,400e for the children of the San Jose Obrero Orphanage. Some of the children even put their best foot forward joining in the circuitous route from the Kiosko Cabo Cervera, and along the coast of La Mata to show their gratitude. The Deputy Mayor of Torrevieja

started the walk which some completed with their dogs as walking companions. Six medals were given to the youngest walkers. Organisers Ken and Lyn Adams said: “We would like to thanks everyone for their kind generosity with special thanks to the walkers and the children from the home who took part.” The orphanage is home to more than

60 children aged from 6 to 16 and it aims to provide a family atmosphere where children are cared for and feel safe. Education and integration into society are core values and Diocesan Foundation is staffed by a team of professionals in social education. All money raised will be used to buy items the children such as clothes, toiletries and school provisions.

Arts and Crafts Fair returns to La Mata The last event in a month of activities to promote local commerce in Torrevieja, will be an authentic arts and crafts fair in La Mata, held from 27th to 29th October on the Plaza Encarnación Puchol. The event is organised by Amata craft association, guaranteeing that everything that is sold at this fair is handmade by the same artisans who serve you. You can ask them for explanations or place special orders, for example for personalized Christmas presents!

Like last year, the fair will stand out not only for the diversity and originality of its products, but also for the many craft demonstrations: the potter will offer the opportunity of making a cup or bowl, a sculptor will be carving stone and a weaver will be working on her loom. Other artisans will be making macramé jewellery, working glass with a blowtorch, turning pumpkins into beautiful table lamps, painting or modelling. There will be a wide range of arts and

authentic crafts: from paintings, portraits and artistic ceramics to handmade shoes; from gnomes and puppets to soaps and natural cosmetics; from leather bags to horn combs or designer jewellery, in materials as diverse as silver, glass, macramé, ceramics and natural flowers. The musicians of Sol Redò often pass through the fair to create a happy atmosphere and young visitors can enjoy board games or participate in workshops to make their own piece of

crafts to take home. This year Amata is celebrating its 25th anniversary and to celebrate it is organising a competition of unique pieces: participating artisans will exhibit a special piece on their stall, and you can vote for the piece that you think is the most beautiful or the most original. The fair is open from 11am till 2pm and from 5pm till 9pm. You can find the programme and photos from last year’s fair at https://www.puebloartesano.es/ Torrevieja

Leftist parties face criticism for responses to Israel-Hamas conflict Leftist political parties across Europe have drawn criticism for their pro-Palestinian stances in the wake of the recent Hamas assault on Israel. Many of these parties have been accused of avoiding direct condemnation of Hamas while placing blame on Israel for the escalating violence. Spain’s radical left-wing Podemos party, a part of the ruling left-wing coalition, emphasised that the violence in Israel and Palestine stems from what they view as occupation and apartheid. They asserted that ending the conflict requires holding Israel accountable and respecting Palestinian selfdetermination. Similarly, Spain’s leftist Sumar party adopted a cautious stance, condemning both sides for violating humanitarian law by targeting civilians. In France, the far-left La France Insoumise (LFI) faced criticism for what was perceived as a relativistic response to the attack. LFI lawmakers characterised the incident as an “armed offensive by Palestinian forces” within the context of an intensifying Israeli occupation policy. This drew rebuke from others, with PS party leader Olivier Faure asserting that no relativism should be tolerated. Greece’s former finance

minister Yanis Varoufakis labelled Gaza as “the largest open air prison in the world” and referred to Israel as “the apartheid state.” The Greek Communist party supported the right of Palestinians to resist long-term occupation, attributing the escalation of violence to the chronic crime of Palestinian occupation, with backing from the US and the EU. In the UK, the main opposition Labour party, led by centrist Keir Starmer, described Hamas’s assault on Israel as a “terrorist attack.” However, some sympathetic voices towards the Palestinian cause emerged during the party’s annual

conference. Former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn refrained from offering direct criticism of Hamas, instead emphasizing a lack of support for any form of attack. The youth wing and members of Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein also faced scrutiny for their proPalestinian messages on social media. Sinn Fein, formerly associated with the paramilitary IRA, could become the largest party in the Republic of Ireland according to polls. The party’s historical ties with Palestinian militants during the “Troubles” have influenced its stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict.

Spanish property market continues to grow For those considering property investment in Spain, recent figures provide compelling evidence of the decision being a lucrative one. In the second quarter of 2023, nationwide property prices surged by an impressive 3.6% compared to the same period in the previous year, following a healthy 3.5% year-on-year boost in the first quarter. This sustained growth marks nearly a decade of continuous upward trajectory, firmly establishing Spain as an attractive destination for real estate investment. A significant driver of this surge has been the proliferation of new-build homes, particularly prominent in regions such as the Costa del Sol and Costa Blanca. Investors who purchased newbuild properties in the preceding year have already reaped the rewards, with average prices soaring by 7% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2023. Foreign buyers have shown keen interest in these investment opportunities, with only a marginal 2.7% reduction in home purchases during the first quarter of 2023 compared to the previous year. This resiliency in demand is notable considering the steep interest rate hikes earlier in the year, alongside

the escalating cost of living and inflation issues plaguing Spain’s crucial foreign buyer markets in the UK and Germany. In particular, the decline in purchases by foreigners was limited to just 2.7% year-on-year in Q1 2023, a striking contrast to the steeper declines among Spanish buyers, which saw a 9% drop in second-home purchases and a 12% reduction in firsthome acquisitions. This steadfast demand from foreign buyers builds on the robust rebound observed in 2022, when their acquisitions surged by an impressive 30.7%, compared to the 6.4% growth recorded for overall home sales.

Consequently, foreign buyers now constitute a significantly larger proportion of total sales, accounting for 19.5% according to the Ministry of Transport, Mobility, and Urban Agenda. This trend is partly attributed to the fact that foreign buyers are less reliant on credit when making property purchases. The property market in Spain continues to exhibit remarkable resilience and attractiveness, as evidenced by the sustained upward trajectory in prices. This, coupled with a continued interest from foreign investors, indicates a robust and promising outlook for real estate in Spain.

Hotel workers arrested for safe thefts A 24-year-old Spanish woman employed as a housekeeper at a prominent hotel in Alicante has been apprehended by the Policia Nacional for allegedly taking money from room safes. The suspect reportedly exploited a universal access code, gaining illicit entry into the secure compartments. The arrest came after two guests of the city centre hotel lodged complaints, asserting that cash they had locked in their safes had mysteriously vanished. Both guests maintained that they had locked the safes and room doors prior to leaving their accommodation. However, upon their return, their money had vanished. Preliminary investigations conclusively ruled out any external break-ins, as there were no signs of forced entry into the rooms. This development pointed to an inside job, implicating the housekeeper who held exclusive access to the rooms through a master key and also possessed knowledge of the safe codes used by guests. Subsequently, the suspect was taken into custody and is now facing two charges of robbery. This incident is the second case involving a hotel employee on the Costa Blanca to come to light. Recently, a receptionist from a Benidorm hotel was arrested for the alleged theft

of €10,123 from a safe, having attempted to fake an alibi to deceive the authorities. The hotel manager promptly reported the incident. However, the 37-year-old night shift employee, the prime suspect, claimed he was not on the premises at the time of the theft, claiming an urgent phone call meant he had to leave the building. According to the suspect’s account, the caller said they could see a guest in distress on a fourthfloor balcony. However, the employee said when he went to investigate, no such incident was found. Subsequently, surveillance footage revealed a hooded figure dressed in black descending the internal staircase, going directly to the safe, and effortlessly gaining access. The contents of the safe were taken and the suspect vanished up the same staircase, beyond the view of the security cameras.

A mere three minutes later, the alleged perpetrator reemerged, now back in his receptionist uniform. During the shift handover, he casually mentioned the quiet nature of the night, save for the strange phone call he had received. The following morning, the shift change revealed the empty safe, prompting the dayshift receptionist to alert her superior. Despite the disguise, the hotel manager confirmed that the suspect matched the height and movements of the nightshift employee. Consequently, he was taken into custody on charges of misappropriation. The arrests serve as a stark reminder of the vigilance required within the hospitality industry, as both establishments grapple with the aftermath of these alleged thefts. The Policia Nacional continue to investigate both cases, seeking to ensure justice is served.

Major cannabis bust at Spanish border Aging population rings EU alarm bells

In a significant operation at the crossroads of the FrenchSpanish border, law enforcement intercepted a vehicle transporting a staggering 603 kilograms of cannabis, along with a substantial sum of €38,000 in cash. The subsequent arrest of both the driver and an accomplice has unveiled what authorities suspect to be a pivotal link in a broader drug trafficking network. The seizure occurred as vigilant officers from the French city of Toulouse’s public prosecutor’s office discovered the illicit cargo concealed within the vehicle attempting to traverse the border. In addition to the substantial quantity of cannabis, a substantial amount of cash was also confiscated.

France maintains strict regulations against cannabis use for personal consumption, positioning it as an illicit substance. However, a legislative shift in 2020 mitigated penalties for possession of cannabis amounts under 50 grams, enabling offenders to incur a fine rather than custodial sentencing. The detained individuals include the driver of the intercepted vehicle, as well as an associate apprehended shortly thereafter in the city of Toulouse. The latter is suspected to hold a significant role as one of the principal organizers within the extensive drug trafficking network. Local law enforcement disclosed that they had been meticulously probing this network

for approximately six months. “We’ve been methodically piecing together the puzzle of this network’s operations, and this recent interception provided a pivotal opportunity to disrupt it,” affirmed an authoritative source from the Toulouse police force. This operation underscores the concerted efforts of law enforcement agencies in combating illicit drug trade, and further investigations are anticipated to unravel more intricate details about the wider network and its operations. The successful interception has dealt a significant blow to the traffickers and demonstrates the resolve of authorities to safeguard communities from the perils associated with drug trafficking.

One giant leap for Spain

In a momentous stride towards solidifying its presence among the world’s spacefaring nations, Spain achieved a historic milestone as a private company successfully launched the nation’s inaugural rocket recently. This feat places Spain in the elite league of countries where private enterprises have triumphed in the realm of rocketry. The pioneering launch of the compact MIURA1 rocket, manufactured in Elche, took place from El Arenosillo, a coastal military base nestled in the southwestern province of Huelva, Andalusia. The

triumphant venture was masterminded by PLD Space, a Spanish aerospace firm. PLD Space lauded the event as an unqualified success, asserting that all technical objectives were met with precision. Acting Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sánchez, exalted the achievement on the social media platform ‘X’ (formerly Twitter), stating, “The launch of the Miura 1, the first rocket with 100% Spanish technology, has been a success. A milestone that positions Spain’s research and development at the forefront of space transportation.”

The ‘re-usable’ rocket ascended to an impressive altitude of 46 kilometres above the Gulf of Cadiz. After a five-minute flight, the spacecraft safely descended into the Atlantic Ocean, where a specialized team will be dispatched to facilitate its recovery. The launch of the 12-meter rocket experienced two prior delays, first in May due to high winds, and then again in June when some of its umbilical cables-vital for supplying power and fuel-failed to release on schedule.

A newly released report by the European Commission has sounded the alarm on the rapidly ageing population within the European Union, warning of dire consequences for the bloc’s economic competitiveness, labour force, and regional disparities. The study paints a stark portrait of the profound societal and economic changes triggered by a diminishing workforce. Dubravka Šuica, the Commission’s Vice President overseeing democracy and demography, highlighted the diverse challenges facing member states. Housing and population density are pressing issues in the Netherlands, while parts of Spain grapple with population decline. Italy faces declining birth rates and an ageing populace, and Greece is experiencing the most rapid ageing. Croatia contends with a “brain drain” of its younger population. According to the report, the EU’s population, slightly over 448 million this year, is projected to peak around 2026 before gradually declining. By 2100, the bloc anticipates a loss of 57.4 million working-age individuals. Most concerning is the surge in the dependency ratio, predicted to climb from 33% today to a staggering 60% by century’s end. This demographic shift will disrupt the labour market,

potentially causing widespread shortages that could impede growth, productivity, and innovation, thereby eroding the EU’s competitive edge in comparison to major global economies. The dwindling workforce will inevitably strain state finances, necessitating increased spending on healthcare and pensions, potentially diverting resources from vital investments in renewable energy and cutting-edge technologies. According to Šuica, this may undermine social cohesion and trust in democratic institutions across Europe. The Commission urges member states to take swift action, proposing measures such as closing the gender pay gap, enhancing work-life balance, providing tax incentives, reducing childcare costs, and facilitating early access to

quality jobs and affordable housing for young adults. Additionally, the Commission emphasises the importance of empowering older workers through upskilling initiatives and flexible work arrangements, calling on businesses to challenge stereotypes about older employees. Šuica envisions a transition from an ageing society to a “longevity society,” advocating for the exploration of economic opportunities within the “silver economy.” The report also advocates for “managed legal migration” to address surging job vacancies, which are already at record highs. Last year, legal pathways brought in three million migrant workers to the bloc, dwarfing the 300,000 who arrived irregularly, amidst the ongoing effort to reform the EU’s asylum policy.

Overwhelming response to Torrevieja reporting app In a remarkable turn of events, Torrevieja’s newly launched mobile app for reporting incidents related to Urban Cleaning, Waste Collection, and Public Road Maintenance has garnered a huge response in just under two weeks. The City Council has been inundated with more than a hundred complaints through the application. María José Ruiz, Councillor of the Popular Party (PP), revealed that out of the total complaints received, 75 pertained to Acciona’s urban collection and cleaning services. Encouragingly, 61 of these have already been satisfactorily addressed. It is worth noting, however, that one complaint previously highlighted in the original app has been marked

as closed by the system, but remains unresolved. A thorough follow-up on this specific issue is underway. The Councillor added that a fraction of the communications related to other sectors like Parks and Gardens, which have promptly been redirected to the relevant departments. Additionally, some reports were of a more general nature, often revolving around long-standing concerns such as paving repairs. These matters fall under the purview of Orthem, a subsidiary of Hozono Global Group, who specialize in rectifying incidents on public roads. Ruiz acknowledged that a few users encountered difficulties while trying to activate the application. To successfully

access it, one must search for “cityintouch” as a single word. Initially, upon download and entry of login credentials, some users experienced a temporary blockage. However, the service promptly dispatches an email to the user’s provided address containing an unlock code. Following this step, the tool functions seamlessly. The resounding success of the app underscores the community’s eagerness to engage with urban services and contribute to the betterment of Torrevieja’s public spaces. As the City Council continues to refine the platform, it is anticipated that this innovative tool will play an instrumental role in fostering a cleaner and more efficiently maintained urban environment.

GBP / EUR UPDATE GBP According to the ONS, the UK economy expanded by 0.2% during August, at the same time revising July’s drop lower from -0.5 to -0.6%. Helping to drive the recent increase has been a rebound in the construction industry, coupled with a surprising boost among auto manufacturing. Whilst the rebound during August looks encouraging, the data is only an initial estimate, and could still be subject to revisions further down the line. Having had a fairly downbeat expectation for UK output during the ill-fated Truss/Kwarteng era, the IMF have also steadily increased their expectations for the UK economy, and they now expect GDP to increase by around 0.5% throughout next year. However, they still believe that the UK will underperform growth of every developed nation including Russia, Germany and Italy over the period, and the risk of stagflation remains real. In other news, the latest updates on Manufacturing and Industrial production continue to highlight a challenging backdrop, with both metrics falling further over the past month. In spite of the obvious challenges facing the UK economy, the pound has found some worthy support over the past two weeks, with GBP/USD rising from a cycle low of 1.2050, to as high as 1.2337 earlier in the week, before moderating yesterday (Thursday). During that time, GBP/EUR has also risen steadily towards 1.1600, giving the pound a slight edge over the single currency. impact the pound’s short-term profile. EUR Inflation in Europe’s largest economy has now fallen to its lowest level since the start of the Ukraine war. Harmonised CPI rose by 4.3% on an annual basis in Germany during September, according to preliminary data released earlier in the week. Among the data, food price gains have remained robust, rising by 7.5% on an annual basis, against a sharp decline in energy costs over the same period. Just a day later, the German government cut the prospects for growth, forecasting Germany’s economy to contract by 0.4% throughout this year. In their last update back in April, the government had been expecting the economy to expand by around 0.4%, which perhaps highlights the difficult year for the economy, as it has struggled against high inflation and an ongoing slump in manufacturing, even if lower energy costs may have had less of a detrimental impact. In their latest update, the IMF expect Germany to be among the weakest performing major economies throughout next year, especially if global manufacturing remains constrained. At the time of writing, EUR/USD has remained fairly flat overall through this week, initially moving back over 1.0600 in conjunction with a broader rally in risk assets, however, the pair has since surrendered much of those gains in the immediate aftermath of the US CPI data. The stable weather of these days spent in Vega Baja has allowed us to appreciate this natural phenomenon more While we wait for a change in the weather, these days it has been quite stable in the Vega Baja region in which the medium and high clouds that we have had have left us unique images in the early and late hours of the day with spectacular colors in the sky and about which there is a whole

science behind them. It is “candilazo” or “arrebol” which are nothing more than the terms used to describe the phenomenon that occurs in the sky during dusk or dawn. This term is used to express the spectacle of warm colors and reddish tones that color the sky at those times of the day, as Rubén Torregrosa from Proyecto Mastral Torrevieja explains to us. The glare or glare is the result of the dispersion of sunlight

in the atmosphere. When the sun is near the horizon, its rays pass through more of the atmosphere, causing shorter wavelengths, such as blue and green, to be scattered more easily, while longer wavelengths are scattered more easily. , like red and orange, are less dispersed and predominate in the sky. This creates a spectacle of warm colors, with shades ranging from orange to red and pink.

Added to this is the fact that, to qualify for subsidies from the European Union through the Next Generation Funds, the City Council must make a contribution to the projects that are approved, “something that would be unviable if we do not have those budget items. “Ruiz said. La Zenia resident thanks optician for saving sight AHEAD of World Sight Day on the 12th of October, Gillian Barrett is thanking Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia for saving her sight during a routine eye test and urging people to make sure they get their eyes tested regularly. Gillian Barrett was experiencing slightly blurred vision in one eye and thought she needed new glasses, with a stronger prescription. But during her visit to Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia, an eye test revealed signs of an artery occlusion, glaucoma and early-stage cataracts. All three conditions can lead to permanent sight loss and therefore she was urgently referred for diagnosis and treatment. Thankfully these conditions were caught early and she is now taking medication, her eyes are healthy and her vision is good. Gillian comments, ‘If it hadn’t been for Specsavers in La Zenia I could have lost my sight. I have a family history of glaucoma, and my mother lost the vision in one eye due to the disease. So, when I started to experience slight blurring in one eye, I thought it was best to have an eye test. During the test, they discovered a blocked artery behind my eye and gave me an urgent referral for treatment before it caused permanent vision loss.’ Optometrist Jade Rose adds, ‘We’re so pleased that Gillian paid attention to her blurred vision and came in for an eye test. She was right that it was because she had changes to her prescription, but the eye test revealed that there was a lot more going on that required urgent treatment. ‘During our comprehensive eye tests, we always take a photo of the retina

(retinography). In the photo of Gillian’s retina, we found an artery occlusion and immediately referred her for specialist help. Blockages like this can be very serious, often causing loss of eyesight, but also increasing risk of stroke if the clot moves to the brain. ‘In addition to the arterial occlusion, we picked up that her optic nerve was pale and the eye pressure was over the norm, very clear signs of glaucoma. However, we referred based on the artery occlusion, due to the urgency of receiving treatment before permanent damage was done.’ Retinal artery occlusions are caused when the flow of blood from the retina is blocked, often due to a blood clot. It is not common, but it is more prevalent in patients with diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Symptoms include sudden blindness or sudden, complete blurring of eyesight in one eye, or a steady loss of eyesight in one eye over a few weeks. Adopting a healthier lifestyle can reduce your risks of developing retinal artery occlusions and other vascular diseases. By staying at a healthy weight, eating well, exercising regularly and not smoking, you will improve your heart health and reduce your risk of a retinal artery occlusion. Gillian is now receiving monthly injections in her left eye for the blocked artery and daily eye drops for the glaucoma. As long as she continues with the treatment her eyesight should not deteriorate. The team at Specsavers Ópticas in La Zenia are also monitoring her intra-ocular pressure and cataracts during yearly eye tests, to ensure that

the conditions remain under control. Gillian adds, ‘I would urge everyone to have regular eye tests to make sure their sight is not at risk. ‘I would also like to thank the team at Specsavers Ópticas La Zenia for their detailed health checks and taking swift

action so I could get the treatment I needed. The process was quick and efficient, and I have been assured by my consultant that as long as I use the drops and have the injections, I will not go blind.’ Eye tests are free at Specsavers

Ópticas and include a range of health checks as standard. There are six stores on the Costa Blanca; in Javea, Calpe, Benidorm, Torrevieja, Guardamar and La Zenia. Visit www.specsavers.es to find your nearest store and book a free eye test.

Alicante, a benchmark in training for the care of wild animals in the Valencia region

Alicante has positioned itself as a benchmark in the field of training for the care of wild animals in zoos and aquariums in the Valencia Region. Caring for elephants, rhinoceroses, primates, snakes, among other animals, will form part of the content of the first and only official course available in the Valencia Region for professional training in the care of wild animals in zoos and aquariums. This official qualification is recognised in the European Union, so students will be able to practice their profession in any country of the European Union. The training provided by the CIM Formación group, with more than 35 years of experience in the sector, will be given entirely on-site and will begin this November. The course is structured in different training modules that will take place both in the facilities of CIM Formación in the city of Alicante, and Terra Natura Benidorm where students will have the opportunity to obtain practical training experience in the park’s facilities with elephants, felines, primates and birds, etc., always under the supervision of the teaching team and those responsible for the park, guaranteeing compliance with all safety measures. The director of CIM Formación Alicante, Alberto Gómez, highlighted, during the signing of the agreement, that his group has been a pioneer in providing this course officially in Spain and that, in addition, they are the only ones in the Valencian

Community that currently offer this training. “The course will have a total duration of 500 hours, of which more than 40% will be of a practical nature, taking place in the facilities of Terra Natura Benidorm, as well as in the rest of the zoos and aquariums in our province. Alicante is the ideal place to study this qualification, as we have a large number of animal recovery areas, which makes us one of the Spanish provinces with the largest number of this type of facilities, which means a high potential for future employability for the students of this course”. Alberto Gómez also explained that the students will also learn about “different ecosystems to locate the existing dangers, captive breeding programmes for species of interest, the rehabilitation of injured animals and their subsequent insertion, as well as the development of environmental education and outreach programmes”. For his part, Luis Perea, as general manager of the Terra Natura Benidorm nature and animal park, expressed his great satisfaction at hosting this pioneering course which “promotes and favours the specialisation and training of professionals dedicated to the care of wild animals in zoos and aquariums”. “It is important that this training includes practical work with animals to learn about their management and conservation in a close and real way, as this way the students

will be able to apply the theoretical knowledge acquired in the day-to-day work they will encounter when they work in zoos and aquariums,” said Perea. The professional opportunities for students who take the course are wide and diverse. In fact, in the Valencia Region there are some of the most important animal recovery areas in Spain, including Terra Natura Benidorm. After their time at Terra Natura Benidorm, and once the students have completed the practical part of the course at CIM training, they will receive this official qualification with which they will be able to work and take care of the wildlife heritage. Thanks to this training, students will be able to provide care for different types of wild animals in Spain and Europe. About Terra Natura Benidorm Terra Natura Benidorm is a nature and animal park dedicated to the care of animal species, with more than 1,500 animals of 200 different species (98 of them protected or endangered), 30 conservation projects and 19 breeding programmes. Its surface area is divided into four areas representing the continents of America, Asia and Europe, and the Pangea area, inspired by the origin of the Earth. The tour of its facilities immerses visitors in the concept of zoo-immersion and otherness, and they can enjoy a wide range of entertainment activities.

Billie Piper ‘humiliated and betrayed’ as she discovers ex husband Laurence Fox was ‘wooing another woman’ during their marriage Billie Piper has reportedly been left ‘humiliated and betrayed’ when she discovered that her ex husband Laurence Fox was ‘wooing other women’ during their marriage. The Doctor Who star, 41, who was married to the broadcaster, 45, from 2007 until 2016, discovered his disloyalty after an actress revealed Laurence had ‘asked her out’ multiple times while the former couple were still together. Honeysuckle Weeks made the revelation to The Telegraph in an interview earlier this week, leaving Billie ‘enraged.’

Sir Michael Caine announces he has retired from acting after a stellar career spanning seven decades: ‘You don’t have leading men at 90!’ Sir Michael Caine has confirmed he has retired from acting. The veteran British actor, 90, confirmed his decision on Friday, following a stellar career spanning seven decades and days after the release of his latest film, The Great Escaper. Sir Michael - who has starred in over 180 movies - explained his decision came after he concluded that ‘you don’t have leading men at 90.’ Jada Pinkett Smith says she and separated husband Will Smith might divorce in TEN YEARS, as she reveals

how star first hit on her while he was married to another woman in primetime sit-down with Hoda Kotb Jada Pinkett Smith says she and husband Will Smith might divorce in ten years after revealing the pair have lived ‘completely separate lives’ since 2016. The prominent Hollywood couple married in 1997 and have addressed separations and marital troubles in the past, but Pinkett Smith revealed in an interview with Hoda Kotb on Friday night how the pair essentially have a divorce without papers. Smith, 55, and Pinkett Smith, 52, share two children, Willow and Jaden, as well as a son, Trey, from Smith’s first marriage.

Dawn French reveals the mortifying text message she sent by ACCIDENT calling fellow celebrities ‘t***ts who attend w***ky red carpet events’ Dawn French has recalled the mortifying moment she sent a PR company a rude message declining their upcoming event by accident. The comedian, 66, who is set to appear on Friday night’s episode of Graham Norton, explains that she sent the jokey message to the wrong person. When asked if she wanted to attend a premiere, she typed out a playful message to her PA saying she wouldn’t attend a ‘w***ky red carpet event with the usual t**ts’. However, rather than sending the message about the James Bond

premiere to her PA, she instead responded to the PR company organising the event. Dawn said: ‘I received an invite to the James Bond premiere. It was a big deal but red carpets are not my thing so I thought it would be funny to send my PA a response that would make her laugh, and then she could send a polite ‘no’ on my behalf.

“How can I see my Digital Certificates on my Computer?“ 1. First, open your Windows 10 Certificate Manager. You can do this by typing either Cert or Certificate in the run menu. 2. Select the Manage user certificates option at the top of the menu. This will populate another window title Certmgr. This is the Certificate Manager tool, which allows you to view installed certificates on Windows 10. 3. In the left pane, double-click the Personal folder to display a subfolder titled Certificates. 4. Select the Certificates folder in the left navigation to view the list of digital certificates you have installed on your machine. These will display in the right pane. That’s it! Now, you can view any of these individual certificates by simply double-clicking on it. Doing this will open a new window that displays the digital certificate’s information, including: 1. The certificate’s intended uses, 2. Who it’s assigned to, and 3. What trusted certificates it stems from and whether it’s trustworthy. “How do I clean junk from my Android Smartphone?“ Open Settings. Select “Storage”. Press on Clean Up. A scan will run

to find any junk. When completed the amount of junk is displayed with a “CLEAN UP” icon. Select to clean the junk discovered. If you have an SD card fitted select “Internal storage” then press on CLEAN UP. There are also Applications that will remove any junk. e.g. Optimiser and CCleaner. “What are widgets?“ Widgets are similar to Apps in that they are both computer programs but unlike apps, widgets do not require the user to click on them in order for the programs to start running. Apps are computer programs that must be downloaded before they can be used. Add a widget • On a Home screen, touch and hold an empty space. • Tap Widgets . • Find the app that has the widget you want. • To check the list of available widgets for the app, tap the app. • Touch and hold a widget. You’ll get images of your Home screens. • Slide the widget to where you want it. Lift your finger. Brian Hoile Technology Help Group

In this fascinating tour, a guide will walk you through the park as you discover its history, learn about its vineyards, and spot the local birdlife, including the pink flamingos of the salt lakes. After that, you can sit back and relax under the trees as you indulge in a delightful wine tasting session, accompanied by local tapas, artisan cheeses and premium olive oils. All

set in a stunning location overlooking the salt lakes of Torrevieja, this is a wonderful opportunity to discover one of Costa Blanca’s hidden treasures. There is a pickup & drop off service available upon request. Please call 672 413 370 for more information, available dates and prices. A brief tale of the park This vast Natural Park is located in the Vega Baja region of Alicante, and occupies the municipalities of

Torrevieja, Guardamar del Segura, Los Montesinos and Rojales. The park is formed by two main lagoons separated from each other by an anticline, called El Chaparral. There is a canal that connects both lakes and, at the same time, two other canals that connect the lakes with the sea, forming a salt exploitation unit. This protected area is used as a salt marsh, and is also an important nesting and wintering area for more than a hundred birds: flamingos, ducks, the black-necked

grebe, and the stilt are just a few examples. In the park you will find shaded picnic areas with tables to eat, spend a relaxing day and enjoy the natural environment. There are also a number of viewpoints for bird watching enthusiasts. More delightful places to visit and fun things to do on the Costa Blanca can be found on the website www.costablancascene. com

Our mother decided to stay on in Spain when our father died. After noticing that our mother was deteriorating, my sister and brother visited and asked her to come home. She won’t budge. She did relent and accepted more help from neighbours, and a lady carer who helped her with shopping. However, we are having trouble now; mum failed her driving test, but still gets in her car and is driving without insurance or a license. Her neighbours tell me that she is becoming a danger on the roads as she is often seen driving on the wrong side of the road. Mum is picking fights with everyone. She threatened to report the carer to the Police, and she quit. She is getting paranoid about intruders breaking in to her house, and says people are moving things in the night and ringing her doorbell. We

don’t know what to do - it’s getting worse. I would persist in encouraging your mum to move back to the UK. If she refuses you may have to think about a care home in Spain; however, she may also be difficult about this. You could look in to engaging ‘live in’ carers. If you go through an Agency, you may be able to get a team to share shifts i.e. four days / nights on; four off. This will mean a fresh face every four days, and hopefully your mother won’t have time to upset people too much. Right now, she may be spending too much time in isolation. Of course, her condition will not get better, and this is something you need to prepare for. Consult a Solicitor in Spain to get some advice on elder care. Also, speak to Age Concern in Spain, and Help Vega Baja.

October breast cancer awareness month How to quickly check your breasts Self checking is about feeling for changes that are not normal for you This may be a lump, thickened area , or anything that feels totally different from any other area in your breasts. It may be easier to check your breasts whilst in the shower or bath as your hands are wet. This makes is easier to slide your hand over your breasts. An easy way to check your breasts is to: 1. Raise one arm above your head 2. With the flat of your fingers press into your breast, feeling for any changes, softly at first and then more firmly. 3. Check the entire breast area, from your collarbone to under

you breast and from the side of your breast up into your armpit. A good way to do this is to move your hands over your breasts, in an up and down or in a circular motion. This is an easy way to make sure you have checked the whole area. 4. Repeat the other breast Another way to do is is laying down. 1. Place a folded towel underneath one shoulder and put your arm above your head 2. using your other hand, check all over your breast, including the nipple up to the collarbone and under your arm. Swap the towel to your other shoulder and repeat on the other side

than in the same month of 2022, in a context in which mobility increased by 2% compared to September of the previous year, with 38.9 million longdistance movements recorded. The number of deaths on motorways and dual carriageways increased compared to the same month last year.

Driving without a seat belt The belt is the most important element for passive safety because it is the only brake on the body in the event of an impact, both for the driver and the rest of the passengers, both in the front and rear seats. The benefits of the seat belt are enormous: it reduces the probability of death in traffic accidents from three to one and reaches its maximum effectiveness in rollovers, where it reduces the risk of death by 77%. In 2020, 125 people who died in a traffic accident did not use it, 26% of the total. As for the injured, 205 of the 1,438 people who needed to be hospitalized after a road accident (15%) were also without it. The use of seat belts in Spain has been mandatory since 1975 for front seats and since 1992 for rear seats. Not using it is a serious offense punishable by a €200 fine and the loss of 3 points on your license if you are the driver.

José Manuel Marcos from Redovan, runner-up in the Panettone World Championship José Manuel Marcos from Redovan, runner-up in the Panettone World Championship In the third edition of the World Panettone Championship held in Italy José Manuel Marcos Candela from Redovan has been runner-up in the Panettone World Championship held in Italy this past week. José Manuel Marcos thus adds awards as important as the one obtained in 2018, when he was runner-up in the Ice Cream World Championship. And Marcos Candela is a master in the pastry and ice cream sector with his expanding Crujiente pastry establishments and “Candela La Gelateria” ice cream parlors. Now, José Manuel Marcos has participated in the third edition of the World Panettone Championship, organized by “Accademia dei Maestri del Lievito Madre e del Panettone Italiano” (Academy of the masters of sourdough and Italian Panettone) which was born to defend, promote and disseminate the artisanal production of products fermented with mother yeast. From the Redován City Council they have congratulated their neighbour who in 2018 named Favorite Son of the municipality.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 10th of October we fished the final match of the Autumn series. Only eleven anglers turned up and we fished pegs B1 to 7 and 26 to 30 This turned out to be a very tight contest but the eventualy winner was the ex England international, Vinny Smith from peg 2. Vinny used the pole with maggots or pellets and weighed 28.800kg. Vinny was closely followed by Tony Felstead on peg B1 who used similar tactics and weighed 27.200kg. Third place was taken by the ever consistent Willy Moons. Who used the method feeder with Maize or chickpeas for 15.520kg. The other section was also a tight affair but Alan Smith ran out the eventual

winner with 10.720Kg caught mainly late on, on the method. I am still currently missing a few results so the winner of the Autumn series will remain a mystery until I get the results in. Rods N Reels The following day we fished the same complex and a very poor turn out meant that we only had to fish the one section. Yours truly, Ian Brown was the very narrow winner with 16.36kg from peg 1. This section has undergone some changes recently that has made the stretch quite unpredictable. The far shelf is very shallow about 8” deep and this makes keeping the fish quite difficult. I fished 4mm pellet on this shelf and despite getting snagged repeatedly

and breaking 5 pole elastics and numerous hooklengths, I managed to catch 2 bass, 2 Mullet and 8 carp. In second place was Barry Homer on peg 3.Barry struggled early on but caught late across and weighed 15.86kg. Third place went to our Valencian visitor, Bill Wakenhall who also caught late on but this time down the edge for 13.04kg. Ian Brown
