Supermarket vouchers for local low-income households

have not been divulged there are suggestions that the bonus could be worth 30€. Ximo Puig recently explained that he believed food inflation is a “serious problem for a fifth of families in the region who are on low incomes”.

and the supermarket association, but President Ximo Puig is believed to be keen to see measures put in place. the majority of the subsidy will be covered by the government, but supermarket will be able to decide if they want to support the scheme. though specifics

he said he realised that it was also a question of ‘finding the right fit’ without negatively affecting producers or small businesses. Supermarket bosses are nervous of the commitment and the president of the association of Supermarkets told Spanish media that although “we are willing to do everything possible to help disadvantaged families, but we are already selling all of our products at the lowest possible prices.”

he said that the main culprit with

rising prices lay with the increase in the cost of raw materials, which he predicts will start to reduce naturally, lowering food prices after the summer. consumes have already been reaping the benefits of the iVa tax reductions introduced by the national Spanish government on some food stuffs. it is hoped the regional discount vouchers will bring more support to those families that need it most across the costa Blanca.

Two women paddle boarders rescued

emergency services were called out to two middle-aged women who had got into difficulty whilst paddle boarding and were approximately 2 miles from the torrevieja coast. the women left with their boards around 12 noon from Playa del cura and due to strong gusts of wind and currents, drifted several miles without being able to get hold of their boards despite their efforts. a rescue plan was activated as soon as the call came through with Local Police and Maritime rescue both searching the rocky area from Punta

Margalla. they located the two women with their boards adrift and transferred them to the Marina Salinas de torrevieja port, where a medical team was waiting to treat them. Both were suffering symptoms of hypothermia, anxiety attacks and exhaustion and were transferred to torrevieja hospital for evaluation. the department for emergencies has thanked the rent a Board company located in the Marina Salinas Marina for lending a boat and a skipper to the local police to carry out the search.

New beach cleaning machines

the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, and the councillor for Beaches, antonio Vidal, have presented the new vehicles and machinery for cleaning and maintaining the municipal beaches. in total, 18 vehicles have been purchased, with ten awaiting delivery and expected by the end of May. this represents a total investment of 3,492,000 euros.

the increase in machinery will improve cleaning frequencies as there will be an increase in tractors and shovels. the motorised sand cleaning capability will be more effective than manual cleaning. in addition, the beach cleaning and maintenance staff has increased by almost 40 percent. the service now has a total of 19 operators in low season and

30 operators in high season. the Mayor of torrevieja explained that the improvements in the Urban cleaning service in general is already being noticed, both in litter bins and in containers in the municipal area of the city. the intention of the council is that before the beginning of the summer everything is in place and fully implemented.

Almoradi Man Dies in Mine Collapse

national Police officers have arrested a 47-year-old man of Spanish nationality for the alleged crime of drug trafficking. investigations led to a home located in the town of Benijófar where officers believed drugs were being manufactured. the house was unoccupied but visited regularly by the arrested man. the suspect was pulled over in his car and officers found a hidden compartment containing the chemicals used to make the drugs. officers attached to the narcotics Group of the elche Police Station began an investigation which led to a home in Benijófar and had well-founded suspicions that someone was manufacturing narcotic substances inside. discreet surveillance revealed that no one lived inside.

however, one person visited several times during the week, staying several hours inside. he travelled between the property and Gandía where he lived. officers identified the person and evidence that led them to believe that there could be a clandestine laboratory in the property where the suspect manufactured narcotic substances, specifically cocaine, for distribution. the man was stopped in his vehicle in a service area in Santomera, Murcia. officers carried out an exhaustive search of his vehicle and discovering that it had a sophisticated system in a hidden compartment. hidden inside were chemical products to produce the narcotic substance found in the Benijofar property. ten bottles containing ethyl acetate, boric acid and other

chemical products were seized, as well as a large number of items for the preparation of illicit substances. the search of the address in Benijófar uncovered an illegal laboratory where the arrested man produced the drug. More than 100 grams of cocaine was seized, 270 euros in cash and various tools for the manufacture and distribution of the narcotic substance.

Meanwhile, Police in callosa de Segura have discovered a sizable marijuana plantation hidden inside an industrial warehouse on the cV913 to catral. officers seized close to a thousand plants, both harvested and in cuttings. approximately 100 kilograms of marijuana were confiscated, as well as a multitude of instruments, fertilisers etc used for the cultivation of these substances.

one of the three geologists who died in the landslide at the iberpotash mine in cabanasses de Súria, Barcelona, was a local man from almoradí. Victoriano Pineda, 29, lost his life along with two other young people, aged 28 and 31, from Barcelona and colombia. almoradí city council held a minute’s silence for the young man on Friday (10th March) in the Plaza de la constitución and his funeral took place yesterday at almoradi Parish church.

the ceo of the mine, Patricio chacana, explained that one of the workers had been at the

company for 3 years, another six months and the other was an intern who had only been assigned for a few days. the men were doing reassessment work in the mine when the roof collapsed.

he said: “We are very hurt and are in very deep mourning for the loss of our three colleagues: daniel, Óscar and Victoriano. at this moment we are focused on supporting their families and watching over our people. our co-workers have lost their lives in the act of earning a living.”

the Fire Brigade of the Generalitat de catalunya

received the notice at 8:53am and nine crews from the emergency department and a helicopter went to the scene to begin rescue work. at around 5pm, they managed to raise the lifeless bodies to the surface, where the Judicial committee certified the deaths. the mountain, underground and canine units of the Mossosd’esquadra also participated in the rescue with ground units and medical helicopters. Psychologists and inspectors from the Ministry of Business and Labour were also sent to the scene.

Visitors to UK will need Visa

the UK is launching its biggest shake-up of border rules in decades. travelers who currently do not require a visa to visit the UK will need to apply for digital pre-approval before arriving. that includes european Union, United States, australian and canadian citizens. British and irish citizens and those with settled status will be exempt from the electronic travel authorisation scheme. People holding passports that currently arrive in the country without pre-vetting will all need to apply and pay for electronic travel authorisation. the scheme is set to be fully rolled out by the end of 2024. the government says the eta scheme will strengthen border

security and is comparable to that used by countries such as the US and canada. the UK has previously said that under current rules it does not have wholly accurate data on the number of people entering and leaving the country. the cost of the eta has not been confirmed but it is expected to be in a similar range to those schemes.the european Union is set to launch its own digital travel authorisation scheme, called etiaS, for visa-exempt nationals in 2024. it will enable travel within 30 countries. travelers from some countries are set to gain smoother access to the UK. however, it will mark a significant change for many

Alicante-Madrid fast trains, low fares

frequent travellers from europe and elsewhere who do not currently need pre-approval. applications will be made online or via an app. those with biometric passports will scan them using their phone and may also need to take a “dynamic selfie” and answer a set of questions. their application will be automatically processed, with a decision given within three days.

anyone arriving at the UK border by air or rail without an eta will be turned away, including if they arrive via ireland but are not irish or British citizens. the government has previously said it expects to handle 30 million eta applications a year.

renFe, Spain’s national rail company, has announced that its new high-speed avlo train will connect Madrid and alicante from 27th March, with tickets priced as low as €7. two other low-cost, high-speed rail operators, iryo and ouigo, will also soon be offering the same route. the avlo train service will initially offer four daily trips (two in each direction) between Madrid and alicante, with a total of 1,436 seats available per day, renFe announced in a statement.the four services will stop in the city of albacete (castilla-La Mancha), and two

trains, one in each direction, will stop in cuenca (also castilla-La Mancha) and the Valencian town of Villena.

Passengers can already buy tickets for the new low-cost route, which will start at just €7. on top of the basic price, clients can purchase a selected seat, as well as pay extra changes or cancellations and additional luggage. renFe said that the basic ticket includes one free cabin suitcase and a handbag.

children under the age of 14 will be able to benefit from a basic ticket price costing €5, as long as it is bought with one adult ticket. a maximum of two

discounted child tickets with each adult ticket is allowed. Large families can also get a 20 percent discount on top of the price, or a 50percent discount for those who qualify for special circumstances.

new low-cost train operator iryo aims to launch its own Madrid-alicante service on 2 June, with the same number of daily services as avlo. Meanwhile, ouigo will start its Madrid-alicante (via albacete) route in May. tickets are now available for as little as €9 if bought in advance but will cost around €30 one way if bought last minute.

Man ordered to pay ex-wife for housework

a Spanish court ordered a man to pay his ex-wife 200,000 euros for 25 years of unpaid domestic labour, based on the minimum wage throughout their marriage. the man was ordered to pay her “204,624.86 euros, calculating the figure based on the annual minimum wage” throughout their marriage, said the ruling by a court in the southern andalusia region.

the couple had two daughters, with their marriage governed by a separation of property regime, which specified that whatever each party earned was theirs alone, which in this case would

have left the wife with no access to any of the wealth acquired through years of the partnership.

Since marrying, the wife had dedicated herself “to essentially working in the home, which meant looking after the home and the family and all that involves,” the ruling said.

Legal papers showed a breakdown of what she would have earned annually for the years between June 1995 and december 2020.

the ex-husband was also ordered to pay her a monthly childcare allowance for the daughters, one of whom is a

minor while the other is over 18. Speaking to cadena Ser radio, the woman, who was not named, said her husband did not “want her to work” outside the home although he let her work at the gyms he owned, where she handled “public relations and acted as a supervisor”. apart from that, “i have dedicated myself exclusively to housework, looking after my husband and the house,” she said.“he made me take on the specific role” of doing domestic chores, to the extent that “i was in a place where i couldn’t really do much else,” she added.

Three dead in mine collapse

three people who were trapped deep inside a Spanish potash mine when a gallery collapsed died before they could be rescued, catalan leader Pere aragones said.

“Unfortunately, we can confirm the death of three young people who were working in the mine,” aragones told reporters outside cabanasses mine in Suria, 75 kilometresnorthwest of Barcelona.

rescuers recovered and identified the bodies of three people who were “around 30 years old”, he said, sending his condolences to their families and colleagues.

one of the victims had been an intern there for just a few days, while another was working at the mine for nearly six months. the third had been there for three years, said a spokesman for icL iberia, which runs the mine.

two had been studying for master’s degrees in engineering at the University Polytechnic of catalonia (PcU), while the other was doing a doctorate in geology at the University of Barcelona, the establishments said.

rescuers said the three victims had been trapped at a depth of about 900 metres (2,950 feet) after one of the galleries collapsed just before 9am on thursday 9th March.despite frantic efforts to reach them, it was hours before rescuers got

down to the place where they could confirm their deaths.

the rescue was complicated by the need to ensure the safety of the teams involved, regional interior minister Joan ignasi elena had told reporters earlier, saying it would be “reckless” to rush such an operation.

Just after midday, aragones announced the deaths on twitter saying: “We deeply regret the death of the three miners in the accident in Suria mine.”

Several minutes later, he deleted the tweet. Many local and national media outlets also said they had died, citing sources in the emergency services, but police said they could not confirm the reports until “they were reached by a doctor” and their families had been notified.

When the gallery collapsed, all three were carrying out “a routine task that they do every day”, mine worker carlos arnaldo told reporters at the scene.

“Sometimes the mine gives you no warning: the roof caves in and nothing can be done,” he said.

“this is terrible news,” tweeted Labour Minister Yolanda diaz, sending “love and solidarity to the families and colleagues of the workers caught up in the collapse at the Suria mine”. owned by icL iberia, the Spanish arm of israel’s icL Group, which specialises in fertilisers and chemicals, the cabanasses mine had recently passed a security inspection, officials said. GBP / EUR UPDATE

GBP it has been a fairly light data agenda in the UK this week, with only the latest halifax house Price report really catching the eye, confirming that buyers surprisingly returned to the fore throughout the past month, with prices duly increasing by a respectable 1.1% and easily beating estimates of a 0.4% gain. that jump helped to ensure yearly prices have now accelerated by 2.1%, edging analyst estimates of a 2% gain, despite a big drop in prices announced by nationwide just a week earlier. the property market will take growth at any level at the moment, given increasingly higher interest rates, which has understandably underpinned a rather measly performance for the sector over the past 6 months.

With such a light UK data agenda, GBP/USd has taken its directional impetus from the dollar side of the fence and having traded between 1.1950 – 1.2200 since the beginning of February, GBP/ USd finally succumbed to broader dollar strength (see USd), moving to as low as 1.1800 earlier in the week. despite that drop out of the bottom of the range, the pound has since found a modicum of support, with GBP/USd willingly heading back over 1.1930 through yesterday as the dollar rally wavered. today’s key US nonfarm payrolls are likely to determine the short-term profile for cable, but beyond that, the wider pound has scope to fare better. GBP/eUr still remains trapped within a broad 1.1200 -1.1400 range which has been in place for the past month.

next week sees the release of the latest UK employment data, with a slight drop in claims expected and a rather healthy-looking 3.7% overall unemployment rate likely to prevail. Whilst the next Boe meeting is not scheduled until the following week, andrew Bailey and the team will play close attention to the Labour market before deciding on whether the UK economy is in good enough shape to handle any further rate hikes, as they continue with their ongoing battle against sticky inflation.

recent improvements will have rate bulls in a fairly confident mood.

EURO

the recent trend of softer euro area economic data continued through this week, with the latest retail Sales data declining by 2.3% (YoY) through February, as consumers tightened their collective belts, given ongoing increases to the cost of living. regional growth data also missed estimates, rising by 1.8% on a yearly basis during the last quarter of last year. German data was slightly more of a mixbag, as weak retail Sales (down 6.9% YoY) were partially offset by a noteworthy improvement in industrial Production, with a 3.5% monthly gain during January.

as we accelerate rapidly towards next week’s ecB meeting, market focus is likely to be on what the ecB says about future rate hikes, rather than what they do on the day, given that they have already widely communicated that they expect to raise rates by another 50bps at next week’s meeting, and anything other than that would be a total fail on forward guidance. however, given that recent slump in key data, it has suddenly become much more of a balancing act for the ecB looking ahead, especially when balanced against those recent increases in inflation throughout the region. the ecB’s robert holzmann has suggested that the ecB should raise rates by 50bps at each of its next four meetings, given the stubbornly high inflation amongst the region, but holzmann has been vocally supportive of a more aggressive hiking path for some time, so we should perhaps balance his views against some of the more dovish amongst the ecB. eUr/USd sold-off fairly aggressively toward the bottom of the range after those Powell comments earlier in the week but has remained fairly constrained between 1.0500 – 1.0700 since the middle of last month. of course, today’s US payrolls could still have the potential to bust that particular bubble.

The Torrevieja Health Department commemorates International Women’s Day

the University hospital of torrevieja commemorated international Women’s day under the slogan “ together we are invincible”. the committee for equality and against Gender Violence has promoted an internal photography competition among the professionals of the centre and has encouraged patients and users to share messages of support in all health centres and in the hospital itself.

the aim of this type of action is to raise awareness of the role of women in the healthcare environment, prevent

situations of gender violence and fight to eradicate all types of discrimination against women.

health professionals occupy a privileged space that allows them to detect any form of abuse, from the suspicion of physical or psychological signs.

in the context of international Women’s day, it is important to highlight the fundamental role that women have played and continue to play in the healthcare environment. historically, women have been leaders and caregivers in the field of health.

in the torrevieja health department women represent a large proportion of the health workers, playing key roles in health care, research, health promotion and management.

in addition, women play an important role in health promotion and disease prevention. however, despite women’s significant contribution to the field of health, they still face barriers and challenges. Gender discrimination, lack of equal opportunities and lack of support and resources are just some of the obstacles.

the questioning. How can I put an end to the interrogation once and for all.

There is no law on how a person should live their life, and what is convention anyway? One person’s normal is not the same as another person’s way of existing. I should think in this day and age, doing

ones’ own thing should be more acceptable, and I am sure it is with your peers. However, from what you tell me it seems to be the older folk in your family, who give you a hard time. You could get tough (but not cross), and tell these people once and for all, that you resent the questioning and request them to stop and allow you to live your own life.

I am a single guy approaching my mid 30s. I have never felt I wanted to settle down and get into a serious relationship, let alone have children. I have watched all my mates get shackled early in life, have kids, and most of them split up from their partners after about 10 years. They complain to me that they wished they had not done so, and so I took the stark warning and did not go down that path; despite women wanting to tie me down, I have resisted and moved on. I have never found the right woman with whom I remotely felt I wanted to settle down with, so I have remained single, and also got a vasectomy to make sure I don’t reproduce. It’s not a huge problem, but every time I am with my extended family, I come in for flack about why I have not done the conventional thing in life, and got married and had kids. I usual respond that I am a confirmed bachelor, but sometimes this can provoke questions that I am perhaps, gay? I am not. Protected nesting for Kentish Plover

Because the Kentish Plover nests directly on the sand of the beach, and because of its size and dull colours it is a difficult bird to detect, it is very important not to cross the temporarily fenced area, and to try to keep as far awy as possible from it when walking or sunbathing.

in 2022, for the third consecutive year, the Kentish Plovers returned to nest successfully on the beach of La Mata, with a total of 3 pairs nesting, with a total number of 8 hatchlings that survived.

the department of the environment of the torrevieja town council has once again taken the protection measures already adopted in the last two years, to try to make the use of the beaches compatible with the nesting of the Kentish Plover (charadrius alexandrinus) in the Municipal natural Park “Molino del agua” (La Mata beach).

these measures are carried out in collaboration with the Wildlife Service of the regional Ministry of agriculture and the Provincial coastal Service.

in this way, workers from the department of the environment have established a new additional marking of more than 400 linear metres on the beach of La Mata, which will be removed once the main breeding period of the species has come to an end. due to the fact that the kentish plover nests directly on the sand, and

that because of its size and dull colours it is a difficult bird to spot, it is very important not to cross the temporarily fenced off area, and even to try to separate as far as possible from it when walking or sunbathing.

the department of the environment has once again stressed that one of the main threats to the kentish plover are unleashed dogs, so it appeals to all citizens, in the sense that, although they should not go with their pets to the stretch of beach that coincides with the Molino del agua, take their pets on a leash to prevent them from chasing the plovers in their games and may spoil a nest or harm the defenceless young. the beach cleaning service is also involved in this campaign to protect the kentish plover.

the councillor for the environment and Beaches of the torrevieja town hall, antonio Vidal, reports that last year, and for the third consecutive year, the kentish plovers successfully returned to nest on the beach of La Mata in 2022, with a total of 3 pairs nesting on the dune front of the Paraje natural Municipal “Molino del agua”, located on the beach of La Mata in torrevieja, with a total of 8 hatchlings, which is great environmental news at local, regional and national level.

the Kentish Plover is a small bird typical of coastal lagoons and beaches with dune systems, which is endangered due to the strong decline of its populations in recent decades. in the official species protection regulations of the department of the environment, it

is catalogued as “vulnerable”, although the Spanish ornithological Society, in its latest edition of the red Book of Birds, raised the category of threat to “endangered”.

the beach of La Mata, both because it is home to a protected area in its central section such as the Molino del agua, and because it has been awarded the blue flag, should have active biodiversity conservation programmes.

Driving in Spain with

Are Dash Cams Legal in Spain?

a frequently reoccurring question searched for is “are dash cams legal in Spain?”

although there are data protection issues, when referring to traffic law the simple answer is yes. data protection legislation must still be considered though as you can run into problems if you share the footage on social media showing privacy related items, which includes faces, number plates and even addresses without permission, for example.

that said, not only are dash cams legal in Spain, they can also be extremely useful, especially in providing evidence in the event of an incident, or worse, and can be used by the authorities to help prosecute offenders, such as was the case when a lorry driver embarked on an extremely dangerous overtaking move, the footage was used to track down and prosecute the driver.

We must take notice of is that the installation of the dash cam must not interfere with our primary field of vision. the optimum position will depend on the style of camera and vehicle, but if the camera can

be hidden behind the rear view mirror, then it will not impede your view of the road ahead, and will not create an additional distraction.

Like all devices, such as GPS, mobile phones, they must also be secured and you must not touch them whilst you are driving.

in terms of them being useful, dash cams have been in use in many countries for many years, serving not only as a means of providing evidence in the event of an incident, but also protecting vehicle owners

against false claims. russia is one of the countries where dash cams have been in use for many years and in america, a move to make them mandatory gained support in recent years, on account of the value they provide.

• Connect to the VPN server.

• Start to watch TV channels from another country. this means you will have access to BBc iPlayer, itV hub, or another streaming service with geographical restrictions. there are several options for you, both free and subscription based. the paid VPns vary in price, but you will probably find a reliable service for 3 or 7 euros per month. You can use your VPn on computers. Mobile devices and some Smart t Vs. another solution is to install a VPn on your internet router. You will need access to the router’s setup and may need help from

RECIPES

and garam masala, followed by the tomatoes and sugar. Cook, uncovered, for 5-7 mins, or until the masala thickens and a layer of oil forms around the edge of the pan.

STEP 3

Spoon the yogurt into a small bowl, add a small ladleful of the hot masala and mix well before stirring the yogurt into the pan of masala. Pour in 100ml hot water and simmer for 3-4 mins until the curry has the consistency of double cream. Season to taste, then return the mushrooms to the pan and stir to warm through. Scatter with the chopped coriander and serve with boiled rice or naan, if you like.

Vegetarian bolgnaise

Simple mushroom curry

Ingredients

50g unsalted butter

500g chestnut mushrooms, quartered

4-6 tbsp sunflower oil

1 tsp cumin seeds

1 tsp fennel seeds

1 large onion, finely chopped

4 garlic cloves, finely chopped

1 tsp ground ginger

¼ tsp ground turmeric

½ tsp Kashmiri chilli powder

½ tsp garam masala

400g can chopped tomatoes

1 tsp caster sugar

2 tbsp thick, full-fat Greek yogurt

2 tbsp chopped coriander

Cooked rice or naan, to serve

Method

STEP 1

Melt the butter in a large wok, karahi or non-stick frying pan over a mediumhigh heat and cook the mushrooms for 10 mins, or until any moisture has evaporated and they’re starting to brown. Transfer to a bowl and set aside.

STEP 2

Heat the oil in the same pan over a medium-high heat and fry the cumin and fennel seeds, stirring continuously for about 30 seconds until they release a nutty aroma. Stir in the onion and cook for 12-15 mins until golden. Reduce the heat to medium, then add the garlic and continue frying for 1 min.

Add the ginger, turmeric, chilli powder

Ingredients

2 tbsp olive oil, or another cooking oil

1 medium onion, finely chopped

2 carrots, very finely chopped

2 celery sticks, very finely chopped

1 garlic clove, crushed

350g frozen vegetarian mince

1 bay leaf

500ml passata

1 vegetable stock cube

100ml milk

Small bunch basil, chopped

600g cooked spaghetti or other pasta shape (about 250g dried)

Vegetarian hard cheese, to serve, optional

Method

STEP 1

Heat the oil in a saucepan and gently

fry the onion, carrots and celery until the onion is starting to soften. Stir in the garlic and the vegetarian mince (there’s no need to defrost it) and fry for a couple of mins. Add the bay leaf, passata, vegetable stock cube and 200ml water, then bring everything to the boil.

STEP 2 Turn down the heat and simmer for 30 mins or until all the pieces of veg are tender and disappearing into the tomato sauce. Add the milk, then cover with a lid and cook for 10 mins. Season to taste. If the sauce is a bit thin, keep bubbling until it thickens. Stir through the basil. Serve with the spaghetti and grate the cheese over the top, if you like. Can be frozen into portions and reheated.

Creamy baked gnocchi wth squash and spinach

Ingredients

600g butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and cut into small chunks (450g prepared weight)

1 tbsp olive oil, plus a drizzle (for optional air-frying)

2 garlic cloves, crushed

160g baby leaf spinach

250g mascarpone

Grating of nutmeg

30g parmesan or vegetarian alternative, grated

500g gnocchi

3 tbsp fresh or dried breadcrumbs

Method

STEP 1

Put the squash in a heatproof bowl with a splash of water and pinch of seasoning, then cover and microwave on high for 5 mins. Or, toss the squash in a drizzle of oil and some seasoning, and cook for 12 mins at 200C in an air fryer until soft and caramelised. It can also be roasted in the oven for 25 mins.

STEP 2

Meanwhile, heat 2 tsp of the oil in a large ovenproof frying pan over a medium heat and fry the garlic for 30 seconds until sizzling but not coloured. Add the spinach, season and cook until wilted.

STEP 3

When the squash is tender, roughly mash half of it using a fork. Stir the mashed squash and the mascarpone into the spinach, then add 150ml water and stir until you have a smooth, creamy sauce. Grate in a generous amount of nutmeg and add half the parmesan. Gently stir in the gnocchi and squash chunks to coat in the sauce. Simmer for 1-2 mins until everything is heated through, adding a splash of water if the sauce is very thick. Scatter over the breadcrumbs and remaining parmesan.

STEP 4

Heat the grill to medium-high, then slide the gnocchi under for a few minutes until golden and bubbling at the edges.

Membership Exceeds 100

The Royal Naval Association Torrevieja Branch (RNATB) Annual General Meeting (AGM) was a resounding success in March as their membership (Shipmates –S/M’s) swelled by 40 over the last year to 116.

Although many of the Shipmates (S/M’s) spend time between UK & Spain, there were still an impressive 57 Shipmates (S/M’s) in attendance to vote in the Vice Chairman, S/M Dusty Miller, Branch Secretary, S/M Steve Hemingfield and Social Secretary, S/M Sally Miller for a two-year cycle and maintain the Committee strength of five.

The financial stability of the branch was duly reported, along with the tremendous growth in membership (S/M’s) of civilians as well as ex RN Matelots and WRENS.

It was also reported that in addition to the Committee, there had been an immensely successful growth of the support team, including Welfare Volunteers, to now over 14, all of whom are called Facilitators and help maintain the exciting, dynamic and caring support for all the S/M’s.

The RNATB enthusiastically reviewed their very accomplished year and particularly in regard to the increased attendance at the numerous and varied social events that they had hosted during the last year.

The S/M’s also voted

overwhelmingly in favour of continuing to use the Lakeview Bar & Restaurante in Ciudad Quesada as their monthly meeting venue.

Once the formal requirements of the AGM were conducted and meeting formally closed, the S/M’s were then able to hold their less formal and more boisterous Branch Meeting, where they continued to expand on their many social engagements, including the recent and successful Valentine’s Lunch, the forthcoming Murder Mystery Dinner and excitedly looking forward to the Cava Reception and High Tea Event to celebrate the coronation of King’s Charles III, as well as their Trafalgar Night Dinner in October.

A bouquet of flowers was presented, on behalf of the branch S/M’s to Nicola Louden as the Raffle Co-ordinator as a special recognition for achieving, with her support of her team, the significant increase on last year of raffle prizes and collections, which boosted the branch funds and donations to charity.

This was then followed by S/M’s ‘tucking into some scran’ of Chilli, Chicken Curry, Lasagne and Quiche, along with all the trimmings and all paid for from the Branch Funds.

After excitedly concluding with their traditional Raffle, where over 20 prizes were won, they then sailed home to relax after an

exhilarating afternoon.

The Royal Naval Association (RNA) has a ‘Free Membership’ and is a UK Registered Charity 266982.

Although primarily founded for serving and retired Royal Naval personnel with the moto ‘Once Navy Always Navy’, it also welcomes all serving or retired military Veterans and civilians alike.

The local overseas branch in Torrevieja area (RNATB) has a diverse mix of members, who are a friendly and engaging group of people who embrace their ethos of Comradeship, Loyalty, Patriotism & Unity while enjoying a verity of social events.

Parrot seeks permanent home

The Balaton group, one of the SAMM boat share groups, who operate four 6 meter keel boats on the Mar Menor have a pet parrot.

Unfortunately it keeps getting moved from home to home as it is awarded, from time to time, to a Balaton member who somehow messes up. Up until recently it had a comfortable home with Dennis but then was claimed by Julian

who caught the groups tender on the jetty while towing it, damaging the transom. He only had it for a week before it was forced to move again, first to Keith for hitting the reef during the first race on a SAMM race day. Then an hour later on to Paddy, who hit the same reef in the second race the same day. Luckily, because of the very light wind no damage was caused to the boat.

These incidents are few and far between so, if you are interested in enjoying sailing and racing on the Mar Menor without having to home a parrot, contact Julian via https://www.facebook.com/ thebalatongroup.

Paddy is now complaining that the parrot is driving him made by asking, every time he walks past it’s perch “Who’s a silly boy then?

Speaking about his time on Glass Onion, Hugh offered a cringeworthy response: ‘Well I’m barely in it, I was in it for about three seconds’

Hugh Grant shut down Ashley Graham and rolled his eyes at her in a red carpet chat branded ‘the worst interview ever’ at the 95th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood on Sunday.

The actor, 62, was not amused as he stepped out to the glitzy Los Angeles event, and openly showed his disdain towards the 34-year-old supermodel’s questions.

The most awkward moment since the slap!’ Hugh Grant shuts down Ashley Graham and rolls his eyes in painful Oscars 2023 red carpet chat - as fans slam actor for giving ‘worst interview EVER’

The actor, 62, made his blatant disinterest well known in the chat which proved ‘painful’ for many viewers

The Four Weddings and a Funeral star kept his answers to her questions as short as possible and made his blatant disinterest well known in the uncomfortable clip.

Kicking off the chat, bubbly Ashley exclaimed: ‘What was it like to be in Glass Onion? How fun is it to shoot something like that?’

But she was met with a cringeworthy response: ‘Well I’m barely in it, I was in it for about three seconds,’ Hugh quipped.

‘It still must have been fun though, you had fun right?’ Ashley said as she powered through the one-sided chat.

‘Erm... almost,’ the actor replied as he looked away.

Grinning and bearing the interview, the model asked: ‘What are you wearing?’ While Hugh offered an insightful: ‘My suit.’

Viewers at home were left feeling rather embarrassed over the exchange, as they praise Ashley for how she handled the difficult situation and said the moment was ‘the worst’ since Will Smith’s infamous slap of Chris Rock at the 2022 ceremony.

‘That made me want to crawl under a stack of chairs,’ one person penned.

Another added: ‘ Ashley Graham deserves on honorary Oscar for putting

Exhibition “3000 Years Of Wine Culture in Alicante”

The Mayor of Torrevieja, Eduardo Dolón, together with the Councillor for Culture, Antonio Quesada, the President of the Designation of Origin Wines of Alicante, Eladio Martín, and the President of the Cajamar Foundation, José Juan Reus, inaugurated the outdoor travelling exhibition “3000 years of Alicante wine culture” on Paseo Vista Alegre, organised by the Regulatory Council of the Alicante PDO together with the Torrevieja Town Hall, where the vast wine-growing tradition of the area is recreated through contemporary illustrations.

The story is told by three important Alicante-born illustrators: Erre Gálvez, a native of Elda; Miguel Calatayud, one of Spain’s emblematic illustrators and Paula Alenda, each with their own personal style and technique.

The Alicante PDO is one of the oldest in the world. The brand name “Alicante” for wines produced in this area has been known since ancient times and has always been associated with a certain quality and style. This means that the designation has been recognised for 90 years.

The existence of vineyards and wineries dates back thousands of years. And with them the establishment of a culture associated with this crop which, together with olive and almond trees, is the basis of an original Mediterranean diet which

is also protected today.

Amphorae, ships, exports, popular culture, guilds, bourgeoisie, recognition... The tradition of Alicante wine is punctuated by these suggestive themes and important milestones at all times.

Together with them, today this culture is people, villages, regions, valleys. It is Monastrell, Muscatel, Mediterranean, Vinalopó or Aitana. And a landscape to protect. A particularly sensitive sustainable crop. And a pleasure to be savoured with the rich and diverse gastronomy of Alicante.

Today, three generations of illustrators, with different styles and techniques, recreate this suggestive world and enhance the historical heritage of more than 3,000 years of Alicante wine history.

Some 10,200 hectares of vineyards, some 2,200 winegrowers and about 45 wineries today make up the Alicante Designation of Origin.

Spread over 7 production districts, which include landscapes protected by the regional government, and some 7 natural parks. Vineyards coexist with almond and olive groves or other fruit trees, which is why the landscape is so different from the wine imaginary in other countries. The towers of the castles coexist with the

mountains near the sea, which marks the influence of all the wines.

The soils are dry, chalky and poor, but the vineyards are able to withstand drought or extreme temperatures

in winter and summer. All of them are survivors. Alicante PDO wines are therefore different, expressive, fruity, suggestive. From the strength of a Monastrell influenced by the sea; the smoothness of a light, aromatic

Muscat; the tradition of sweet wines or the purity of a unique Fondillón.

The exhibition “3000 years of Alicante wine culture” will be at the Paseo Vista Alegre until the 8th of May.

Modernising the Road Network

With the aim of reducing road traffic incidents, the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) continues to tighten restrictions. By the year 2026, the DGT wants to have total control of all the vehicles that circulate on Spanish roads.

To do this, it will create a platform that will record the data of all vehicles. Cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles will have to connect to the platform, which will record data such as the position they are in or the speed at which they are traveling. The DGT explains that this measure will be established not to control people, but vehicles.

In addition to position and speed, the new system will also be able to access more information about the vehicles: the number of people inside, if any of the passengers is smoking ... One of

the new regulations that the DGT wants to apply in a near future is the prohibition of smoking inside the car if children or pregnant women travel.

The system will allow access to the location of the vehicle in real time. In this way, in the event of an incident, the emergency services will be able to act more quickly. In addition, by recording the speed and other data of the vehicles, it will help to clarify the causes of the incident.

Although everything seems to be advantages, the new total control that the DGT wants to have over vehicles from the year 2026 is of particular concern to drivers with regard to their privacy. But the body is willing to move forward, and from this 2022 it will begin to perfect the platform so that it is ready in 2026.

Buying a Second-Hand Vehicle in Spain

If you are going to buy a secondhand vehicle, you should take into account a series of recommendations that the DGT advise in order to carry out the process avoiding problems.

Buying/selling a vehicle can be complicated. To make sure you carry out the transaction in the simplest and safest way possible, the DGT advise you to follow their guidelines. The first point they makes is that after signing the purchase contract, you are obliged to make the change

of ownership of the vehicle within a period of 30 days.

A vehicle in a situation temporarily deregistered, without local taxes up to date, or with pending fines cannot be transferred.

In the event of donation, inheritanceor divorce, if you want to change the ownership of a vehicle but you are not going to buy it, but rather that it comes from a donation, inheritance or as a result of a divorce or separation, the steps you have to

follow are slightly different.

When buying a second-hand vehicle:

Check the general condition of the vehicle

You can request a detailed report of the vehicle from the DGT, in which you will find information that may be interesting when buying a vehicle, both at the administrative or judicial level, such as data about the validity of the technical inspection (ITV), including the repairs and revisions that are carried out by the workshops attached to the digital maintenance or workshop book.

It is better to have the vehicle checked by a professional, but if this is not possible, you can check the most important points yourself: Check its condition outside and in daylight: paint, bumps, signs of a previous serious accident.

Open the bonnet: check the oil and the timing belt.

Check that the tyres are the same as the ones that appear on the technical inspection card and that their tread is at least 1.6 mm deep.

Push the car sideways hard to check the damping.

Enter the car and check that the seat belts, seat adjustment and door locks are all working properly.

Insert the ignition key and press all the switches to check that they work correctly and that any warning lights illuminate.

Start the car: confirm that the pedals do not have too much play and press the brake pedal fully for 20 seconds: if it does not return to its initial position, the circuit is leaking. The wheels must respond to steering wheel turns with no slack. Take a road test of the car. First, let the seller drive and try to detect possible sounds that may be a sign of failure. Then drive it and check that

the car has no problems.

When in doubt, it’s best to ask the seller to let a mechanic verify that it’s in good condition before you sign for it.

Check the vehicle is transferable and free from charges

To make this task easier for you, we advise you to request a reduced report on the condition of the vehicle from the DGT. This free report offers information that allows you to confirm the correct identification of the vehicle, check if the vehicle is registered and information on whether there is any incident, load or impediment when driving that could affect the vehicle.

If in the reduced report you see that the vehicle had any incident, we advise you to request a detailed report or go to a traffic office before continuing with the purchase.

In the event that the vehicle is temporarily deregistered, before making the transfer, the owner of the vehicle (the seller) must register the vehicle.

Possible issues:

Circulation Tax of the previous year paid. A vehicle without local taxes up to date cannot be transferred.

Possible penalties imposed for paid vehicle violations. A vehicle with penalties cannot be transferred.

Free from any disposition limitation that was registered in the Movable Assets Registry, except with the express consent of the Finance Company or subrogation by the buyer.

Free of embargoes and seals. If the vehicle has an embargo or a seal, you must be informed of it and if you are satisfied with the situation, in order to make the purchase, you must sign a document indicating that you are aware of said situation.

Sign a sales contract

It is important that you sign a sales contract, the following information must appear as a minimum:

Buyer data: Name and surnames or business name and your DNI/NIE/CIF.

Seller data: Name and surnames or company name and your DNI/NIE/CIF.

Vehicle data: Make, model and registration plate. Purchase price.

Date and time the contract is signed (the time is as important as the date).

Do not forget that the contract must be signed by both the buyer and the seller on each of the pages that make it up.

Pay or settle tax

You must justify the payment, exemption or non-subjection of the Property Transfer Tax (IPT), model 620 or model 621, as appropriate, in the autonomous community in which you have your fiscal domicile. In almost all the Autonomous Communities you can do it easily and electronically.

Apply for change of ownership with the DGT

Remember that you have a period of 30 days from the signing of the contract to transfer the vehicle. This can be done online, via the virtual office on the DGT website, or face-to-face in one of their offices, for which you will need an appointment, and to be able to speak Spanish.

Remember to check the ITV validity

If the vehicle you just bought has an expired ITV, you will not be able to drive with it, so to carry out the corresponding inspection you must take it to the ITV station of your choice by mounting it on a tow truck or similar means authorised for its transport.

Cat and a half marathon!

How did pet cat Thor get from Ciudad Quesada to La Marina after disappearing from his home. Thankfully he was taken in by a concerned couple that saw him stressed out and exhausted on the road outside their house in La Marina urbanisation. Thor took refuge with them and they called in Pets In Spain animal charity for help in trying to locate his owner using their network of volunteers and contacts. In the meantime, after a long rest and a feed Thor decided to leave his rescuers house to continue on his marathon journey! It was a few days later that this extremely people friendly cat was seen again and picked up, this time by a Swedish lady on holiday and staying with her grandmother.

She subsequently viewed the appeal for his whereabouts on the Pets

In Spain Facebook page and recognising him she contacted them. The charity was able to locate the cat’s owner and organise a very happy reunion as seen in this photo.

Left is much relieved owner Esther with Thor and his Swedish rescuer Michele.

The Pets In Spain animal charity has a great reputation in helping people be reunited with their missing pet cats and dogs. For more information contact the charity by email on info@petsinspain.com, or in WhatsApp to 0034 645469253. Donations will be gratefully received. Visit the Web site: petsinspain. com

Abbey Angling

On Tuesday the 7th of March we made our first visit of the year to the Embalse de Argos for the final round of this years Abbey Angling cup.

The venue is pegged along a peninsular that as what is now as the cold side and the warm side. The cold side does not get much sun, even in the summer months and at this time of year was probably peaking at about 10 degrees with a very strong face wind. Where as the warm side had a bit of sun and no wind with a temperature of about 20 degrees. This reflected in the fishing with the warm

side fishing much better than its counterpart.

Winner not only on the day but winner of the Abbey angling cup was Bob Robinson. Drawn on the warm side he fished the method feeder with corn or pellets at about 45m to catch carp for 18.10kg.

In second place on the end peg again on the warm side was Graham Patterson. He fished the cage feeder with either maggots or corn for 16.70kg.

In third place making hsi debut for the club was Gary Plant. Aagin on the warm side he used similar tactics to Graham for 13.64kg.

The best weight on the cold

side was Barry Smith with 11.68kg caught on maggot on a cage feeder.

Rods N Reels.

The next day at the same venue, and after the exploits of the previous day we decided to all fish the warm side. The thinking was that the fishing would be better. This day was a much warmer day with little or no wind , high pressure and temperatures approaching 30 degrees in the sun trap of these pegs. In essence the venue fished much harder, mainly we decided due to the rapid rise in air presure.

Winner on the day from peg

one was the Burnley maggot master, Barry Smith he fished at about 25m with maggot or corn and caught 12 carp for a total of 18.12kg.

In second place was another raider from over the borders , this time from Serville, Dale Smith. Dale fished the method feeder mainly but also caught a couple of barbel on the slow sinker for 8.82kg.

In third place for the second day running was Gary Plant who also used the method for 8.18kg. For further details please visit our wesite www.abbeyangling.es
