Largest ever marijuana seizure by Guardia Civil
Guardia Civil have seized the largest ever haul of marijuana with more than 32 tons of packaged buds confiscated during a massive police operation across Spain. officers dismantled a
large criminal network, making arrests in valencia, toledo, Ciudad real and Asturias as part of the operation. Sources estimate the drugs would have a street value of at least €64m.
Guardia Civil sources explained, “through a complex business network, the criminals sent vacuum-packed marijuana throughout the national
territory, as well as to Switzerland, holland, Germany and belgium, among other european countries.” the investigation, codenamed
operation Jardines, concluded with the seizure of 32,370.2 kilograms of marijuana buds, the largest seizure of this substance, not only in Spain, but also internationally. the amount of product seized, say police, is equivalent to around 1.1 million marijuana plants. twenty detainees - nine men and eleven women between the ages of 20 and 59 - were part of an organisation with offices in toledo, Ciudad real, valencia and Asturias, which controlled the entire drug production and distribution process. the investigation began with an inspection by the Guardia Civil of several industrial hemp plantations in villacañas (toledo). the main individual under investigation owned a company with which they acquired seeds. A second individual transported and planted the seeds. Another company was in charge of the care, maintenance, collection and drying of the plants. the seed acquisition company was also in charge of collecting the dried plants, complete with buds and storing them in two warehouses located in the province of valencia. From there, the detainees processed the product, separating the buds and vacuum packaging them in different sizes to send them to places within Spain and to european countries, mainly Switzerland, holland, Germany and belgium. A second inspection took place in the town of Almagro (Ciudad real) during the month of october. officers from the toledo judicial police discovered some 37,000 plants distributed across four greenhouses and in the process of being dried. the three people who Continued on page 3
