Extension for Orihuela Costa Medical Centre Following a meeting last tuesday the orihuela Costa Medical Centre which serves the coastal area of the municipality of orihuela, is to get an investment of 3.3 million euros. this contribution will extend the centre by 1600 m2. the investment will take place rather than a second health centre being built for the area. the project for the Cabo Roig-based facility will

begin in september and follows a meeting between the local government and the Minister for health, Miguel Minguez. the expansion will bring with it the provision of new services such as a woman’s clinic and increased Continuous Care Point facilities. the reception area will also be expanded. the centre is situated in Calle

Rock Against Cancer returns with a vengeance

Rock fans of the Costa Blanca rejoice - Rock Against Cancer is back! the aim of the initiative once again is to raise money and awareness for the fight against cancer. the annual music festival started from humble beginnings at Monroe’s Rock Cafe Pub when the popular venue celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2009. the event grew and in 2015 went on to develop into to an impressive street party and later, in 2018 and 2019, a full rock festival at the eras de la sal making it the largest international Charity Music event on the coast. due to the pandemic, 2020’s event had to be cancelled and in 2021 the decision was taken to arrange several smaller gigs at a variety of venues. this year, a two day rock festival takes place in the Parque Antonio soria concert venue on september 9th and 10th and organisers have managed to line up some of the best rock tribute

bands in europe. the line up includes Creedence Clearwater Repeated - denmark’s most authentic Creedence Clearwater Revival Band! 2022 is the 50th anniversary of both the dissolution of and the last live concert with one of the largest in history American rock bands, Creedence Clearwater Revival. the band had huge hits like Bad Moon Rising, have You ever seen the Rain and Proud Mary and at Rock against Cancer, these favourites will be delivered in true rock’n’roll fashion with great respect and love for the original material.

Installation of bathing areas on the beaches of Torrevieja and Pilar de la Horadada the regional secretary of tourism, Francesc Colomer, has said that these bathing areas “qualify our beaches and make them more rewarding for all audiences” tourism Comunitat Valenciana has installed 12 accessible bathing areas for rest on different beaches throughout the Valencian Community, which will be in operation throughout the summer season. Among these selected Valencian beaches are the municipalities of torrevieja and Pilar de la horadada. these 12 facilities have involved an investment of 108,416 euros. the rest areas are triangular metal structures

made from stainless steel which are embedded in the beach area with an average water height of 0.50 meters. in addition, they have a canvas awning which will protect the people seated in the rest area from the sunshine. this metallic structure is

accompanied by a corridor with railings that facilitates access to the area itself and to the swimming channels that accompany the structure for people with reduced mobility. in addition, this entire area is marked with indicative buoys for the protection of users.

Man from Cardiff dies in suspected drowning in Tenerife A British man has died in a suspected drowning in the Canary islands. nicky desmond, from Cardiff, went swimming in the sea off Callao salvaje, tenerife, within hours of arriving on 29 July, the eve of his 30th birthday.

Family friend sacha Pugsley, 29, said Mr desmond was “very bubbly, very outgoing” and “always had a helping hand for everybody”. his friends and family are hoping to raise £10,000 to cover the cost of repatriating his body.

Mr desmond was on his first day of his holiday in south-west tenerife to celebrate his birthday. emergency services rushed to the scene before taking him to hospital in Adeje. “he would literally walk the world for me if he could. he was always happy, always bubbly. i don’t think i’d ever seen a time where he was upset,” added Ms Pugsley. the online fundraising page said of

Mr desmond: “he was such a beautiful soul, a brother, a son loved by all that met him, has left us too soon. our beloved friends & the gabalfa community have suffered a significant loss with the recent passing of their precious friend nicky.

A balloon release was held in Mr desmond’s memory on the day of his 30th birthday.

An inquest into his death is expected to be opened in Pontypridd, Rhondda Cynon taf, once the coroner receives a report from the spanish authorities.

Prosecutors seek eight-year prison term for Shakira on tax fraud charges the popular singer also faces a fine of over €23 million in connection with six counts of tax offenses allegedly committed between 2012 and 2014 spanish prosecutors on Friday formalized charges against shakira, requesting a prison term of eight years and two months for the Colombian singer if she is found guilty in connection with six crimes against the Public treasury.

After the possibility of a settlement vanished - shakira rejected the last offer - the public prosecution concluded that the artist defrauded €14.5 million ($15 million) between 2012 and 2014. in addition to the prison term, shakira could face a fine of over €23 million. shakira is charged with six crimes against the tax authorities with two aggravating factors: the large amount of money involved and the use of offshore companies that allegedly allowed her to conceal her income. the prosecution, however, also appreciates an extenuating circumstance: the fact that the artist made available to the court €17.2 million to address possible liabilities. At the trial, the prosecution wishes to question shakira as well as 37 witnesses, some of whom will testify via videoconference. in the coming weeks, the

court in esplugues (Barcelona) that has been investigating the case will issue an order to start hearings. that means that, even if there is a last-minute deal, shakira will have to take the stand, if only to confirm it. the Colombian singer has harshly criticized the prosecution, accusing it of being “intransigent” and using “undue means to pressure” her. she is seeking a full acquittal and is determined to fight to the end, said sources familiar with the situation. the three-year investigation into shakira, whose full name is shakira isabel Mebarak Ripoll, came to an end last year in July. the judge found that there was “sufficient evidence” to try her for evading €14.5 million in taxes by concealing her wealth via a network of companies based in tax havens. the judge held that, between

2012 and 2014, the singer was a tax resident in spain and, therefore, had to pay her taxes in the country, which she did not do. shakira has consistently maintained that during those years she lived in the Bahamas and only visited spain “sporadically.” But this claim was repeatedly debunked by tax inspectors, who have closely investigated shakira’s life in Barcelona, where she was living with FC Barcelona soccer player gerard Piqué. in early June the couple announced their separation after 12 years together. shakira’s defense filed an appeal to insist that there is no direct evidence that shakira spent “more than 183 days in spain” during the years in question. under spanish law, a person is considered a tax resident if they have spent this number of days in the country.

5 Chiringuitos on the Mar Menor to be forcibly closed down the five beach bars have been accused of not opening to the beach goers on a morning and also of polluting the Mar Menor “Costas” which is the Coastal Authority that rules on matters relating to the coastline and beaches of the Cartagena region has started the closure proceedings against the five bars located between el Vivero and Mar de Cristal.

According to “Costas” these bars are

not open on a morning when there is a greater amount of people on the beaches and that they only open in the afternoons and evenings so they are not fulfilling their proper role as beach bars. the bars seem to have taken this decision due to the lack of people on the beaches on a morning, therefore, they see it as not worthwhile to open for business. the “Costas” are also stating that the

bars are using non-recyclable plastic cups which are being blow into the Mar Menor along with other waste such as cigarette ends, paper napkins etch which in turn are polluting the Mar Menor.

With this in mind the bars licences will be revoked and and the five bars will be forced to close down. the council of Cartagena have 10 days in which to try to overturn this decision and prevent the five bars being closed down

Craft demonstrations return to Hondón de las Nieves

on 19, 20 and 21 August an interesting Arts&Crafts Fair will be held in hondón de las nieves. More than twenty artisans are expected to set up their stalls in the village center, not only to sell their creations, but also to work at their stalls, so that you can observe their skill and patience, ask for explanations of techniques or tools and even place special orders. some will be working with leather, wood or paper, others will be painting or making macramé and other jewelry. A lady blacksmith will set up her forge; the potter will invite you to make your own clay bowl on her wheel and you can watch a ceramic sculpture being made. they all want to share with you the affection they have for their craft. in addition, there will be craft and circus workshops for children and you can regain strength in the tavern, the creperie and the Arab tent. two jugglers/stilt walkers will enliven the fair with their tricks and jokes and close the fair at night with a great fire show. each stall is different, to make sure that you will certainly find something you like, whatever your tatse or age. on saturday at midnight the famous Correfocs is held, which always attracts many people to hondón. devils and other fantastic characters will go through the streets of the town, accompanied by a spectacular float with music and fireworks. the organization of the fair is again in the hands of the Amata association. it is not easy for artisans to make a living from their craft, especially when they have to compete with factory products or products imported from other countries. that is why Amata

requires all participants to only sell products made by themselves. And you will notice the result: in the seven years that Amata has organised this fair, it has got a name for offering the public the opportunity to obtain original craft work directly from the author, at a fair price for both. this year the opening times have been extended: on Friday, 19 August, the fair opens from 7 in the afternoon

until midnight. on saturday it opens from 11 a.m. till 2 p.m. and in the evening from 7 a.m. till midnight and this year it also opens on sunday morning from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

All 18 year olds to get 400€ cash boost

if you live in spain and it’s your 18th this year, the ministry of culture wants to help you celebrate it with €400 to spend on entertainment and arts.

Brand-new adults will be stocking up with free books, Cds and dVds, going to music festivals, museums, plays and the cinema without paying a cent – except on popcorn – provided they register by 10th october. the minister behind the move – aimed at boosting a wider industry sorely battered by Covid lockdowns and restrictions and, now, consumerprice inflation – is Miquel iceta, who has made it very clear where his own Bono Cultural would be channelled if he was 18 again. “i’d have spent it on the entire works of elton John,” iceta, 61, said. half the voucher, or €200, has to be used to fund events and experiences rather than physical or digital products, meaning the British veteran singer-songwriter would have to go on tour in spain for an 18-year-old iceta’s complete Bono Cultural to become an ‘elton voucher’. iceta says he wants the very young to ‘embark on experiences they have never considered before’, opening new worlds for themselves which, hopefully, they will want to ‘continue to explore’ as they navigate the murky, daunting, fun, and thrilling waters of adulthood that they enter for the first

time in 2022.

“About half a million young people have turned 18, or will turn 18, this year in spain, and just in the first day since it was announced, 47,005 of them have been online to sign up for their ‘culture voucher’, with 22,748 completing their application,” iceta, originally from Catalunya, explained.

“We’ve spent the last few months explaining the system to associations representing all arts and entertainment sectors, and over 3,000 companies have signed up.”

When the gift card went live, details of the dedicated web portal for acquiring it were not mentioned, but iceta has now confirmed applications are made via the government-based website: Bonoculturaljoven.gob.es they then have up to a year to spend it, although subscriptions purchased for music, gaming and e-book download or film and series streaming platforms – up to a maximum of €100 for digital entertainment in total – run for four months. “the system is easy to use, but it’s new, so we know we might need to make adjustments,” iceta admits.

Although the ‘culture voucher’ scheme has involved ‘a significant investment of taxpayer funds’, according to the minister, he hopes it will be successful enough that the expense can be justified for future years. supporters of parties in government opposition have reportedly claimed the move is a ‘bribe’ for those who are only now becoming old enough to vote, but iceta points out that ‘anyone who thinks an 18-year-old’s ballot can be bought for €400 doesn’t know much about politics, or about young adults’.

Also, the ‘culture voucher’ is available to asylum-seekers and to residents who are not spanish, neither of whom are able to vote in any case. some have criticised the fact that the voucher is not means-tested, but iceta points out that lower-income youngsters will now be able to enjoy a world they could not otherwise have afforded, and those from higherincome families will be encouraged to try new experiences. the scheme has been in place for some time in France and italy, with huge success, he adds.

Spain to ban low aircon temperatures A debate has been sparked after spain’s government moved to prevent offices, shops and other venues from setting air conditioning below 27°C in the summer. it is part of plans to cut the country’s energy consumption and limit dependency on Russian gas. the decree, published last week, will also stop heating from being raised above 19°C during the winter. the rules will be mandatory in all public and commercial buildings, including bars, cinemas, theatres, airports and train stations. it is also extended as a recommendation to spanish households. the government passed the bill as part of a bid to reduce the country’s gas consumption by 7% in line with the recent european union energy agreements to limit dependency on Russian gas.

“We see that it saves energy and is good for climate change, but our concern is that it affects families, especially the most vulnerable,” said

Ana isabel gracia, secretary of social policies and housing at the spanish trade union ugt (unión general de trabajadores). “instead of taking global measures, it should be specified by establishments so that they can have a different temperature. it is not the same to work, for example, in a place where there is a lot of machinery and the temperature is very high, and in another type of environment where there is none of that. “there are studies that say that the optimal temperature is 24 degrees. therefore, perhaps, instead of raising it to 27 degrees, we could stay at 25.” teresa Ribera, spain’s ecological transition minister, said the measures -- which include switching off store window lights after 10 pm but not street lighting -- would initially be maintained until november 2023. she encouraged spaniards to join the cuts, saying it would not only reduce consumption levels but also bring down households’ energy bills.

Investigation into the rising cases of needle jabs on women in Spain there has been a rise in the number of women reporting being jabbed with medical needles while at nightclubs or parties according to the country’s interior minister.

Fernando grande-Marlaska told state broadcaster tVe that police are investigating whether “the inoculation of toxic substances” is intended to subdue victims and commit a crime, mainly of a sexual nature. he added the investigation will also seek to ascertain whether there is another motivation, such as creating insecurity, or intimidating women. the rise of needle pricks have been seen at musical events

of gijón who had the party drug ecstasy in her system. Local media reported that the girl was quickly taken to hospital by her parents, who were near her when she felt a prick with something sharp. spanish health authorities said they were updating their protocols to improve the ability to detect any substances that were possibly injected into victims. the toxicological screening protocols call for blood or urine tests within 12 hours of a suspected attack, Llop said. the guidelines advise victims to immediately call emergency services and go to a health centre as soon as possible.

Archie Battersbee dies after parents Dog trapped in an lose legal battle over life support irrigation area is saved Archie Battersbee, the 12-year-old boy whose parents fought a long-running legal battle to prevent his life support treatment from being removed, has died, his mother has said. speaking outside the Royal London hospital, hollie dance said he had “fought right until the very end”. speaking through tears, she said: “in sadness, Archie passed at 12.15pm today. i would just like to say i am the proudest mum in the world. “he was such a beautiful little boy. he fought right until the very end and i am so proud to be his mum.” supporters of the family came to the hospital with flowers on saturday morning and created a tribute to Archie in front of the hospital with candles in the shape of the letter A. dance and Archie’s father, Paul Battersbee, had in recent days made applications to the high court, court of appeal and european court of human rights (eChR) to have him transferred to a hospice to die.

A last-ditch plea to the eChR to intervene was rejected late on Friday, following a high court ruling that he must remain at Royal London hospital in Whitechapel, east London.

Archie, a talented gymnast and lover of mixed martial arts, had been in a coma since suffering a catastrophic brain injury on 7 April. his mother, who had been at his bedside almost constantly ever since, believes it resulted from him choking while taking part in a viral social media

Members of his family were present at the bedside and our thoughts and heartfelt condolences remain with them at this difficult time. “the trust would like to thank the medical, nursing and support staff in the paediatric intensive care department who looked after Archie following his awful accident. they provided high quality care with extraordinary compassion over several months in often trying and distressing circumstances. this tragic case not only affected the family and his carers but touched the hearts of many across the country.”

the rescue happened at 10:52 am last Friday when firefighters travelled to the irrigation area to help and rescue the frightened animal. the story had a happy ending and four firefighters posed with the dog as soon as it was rescued from the irrigation area where it was found.

EU backs new Spanish Covid vaccine

the european Commission has signed a contract to allow eu member states to buy up to 250 million doses of a new Covid-19 vaccine developed in spain. the hiPRA vaccine has yet to be approved by the european Medicines Agency (eMA), but if it gets the green light it would be the eighth to join the eu joint procurement programme. the Brussels eu executive oversees a joint buying strategy that has secured 4.2 billion Covid vaccine doses so far, underpinning the bloc’s immunisation strategy.

Contracts have already been signed with AstraZeneca, sanofi-gsK, Janssen, Biontech-Pfizer, Moderna, novavax and Valneva, although the latter has suspended production. the hiPRA vaccine, also known as Phh-1V, is protein-based and intended as a booster shot for adults whose immunity is receding after their first two or three shots. the eMA has placed it on “rolling review” and is studying the results of laboratory and clinical trials, with a view to possibly authorising its use later this year.

Needle spiking spate

spanish police are investigating a string of cases of women being injected with possibly spiked syringes in crowded clubs, following similar incidents in Britain and France. the attacks, reported to police or social media over the past few weeks, raised fears that sexual predators might have found a variant on spiking drinks to prey on women. so far, however, no traces of drugs or other toxic products have been detected and no cases of related sexual violence reported. over the past couple of weeks, police have registered 23 cases in Catalonia, mostly in the tourist

town of Lloret de Mar and in Barcelona, and 12 in the Basque Country. the victims’ accounts are similar. the woman, usually a young woman, is out partying when she feels a needle prick in the arm or leg and then becomes dizzy or drowsy, the Basque police said.

Police are asking anyone who

believes they have been targeted to go to a health centre as soon as possible and to report the incident.

A rash of “needle spiking” cases was reported in Britain in 2021 and in France this year. spain registered its first attacks in early July, during the Pamplona bull running festival.

Women complain over pictures used in Spanish campaign spain has apologised after a third British woman complained that doctored images of her were used without permission in a widely criticised “beach body” campaign. the women’s institute, part of spain’s equality ministry, has emailed all three models to “sincerely apologise” for a poster that was supposed to encourage women of all shapes and sizes to be proud of their bodies. instead, the institute and Arte Mapache, the artist who created the poster, prompted anger from the women featured because their images were used without permission and in two cases were significantly altered.

Juliet Fitzpatrick, a cancer survivor, became the third woman to complain about the poster since it appeared last week, saying the image created “a bit of a Frankenstein” by superimposing a photographic portrait of her face on the body of another woman who appears to have had a mastectomy.

Fitzpatrick, whose face appears on a standing body on the left of the beach poster, had two mastectomies, one in March 2017 and another in november 2018 and has since campaigned about the visibility of women who have had breasts removed. she told uK media: “the face is reminiscent of me, but that’s not my body. i’ve got no breasts, and this one has got one breast. the thought of my face being on a body of a woman with one breast is quite upsetting.” the institute apologised to Fitzpatrick, as well as to sian greenLord, who was left shaking with anger after the poster showed her image with her prosthetic leg edited out, and to nyome nicholas-Williams, the first of the three models to complain that her image had been used without consent. the email said: “We did not know that images of real women had been used. We sincerely apologise for any damages that may have been caused

to you. the aim of our campaign is to recognise body diversity in all its dimensions, and we will be glad to collaborate with you in any related action.” in a statement the institute added: “the institute wants to clarify that at no time was it aware that the women who appear in the images were real people. the work contracted was the elaboration of an illustration, without the use of models. the institute, as an injured party, have contacted the models to clarify the

situation, and are waiting for the illustrator and the models to reach an agreement.”

Mapache apologised last week

for using images of women without permission. But she has yet to issue personal apologies to the women involved.

Spanish coastguard makes miraculous rescue

An elderly Frenchman has survived 16 hours adrift at sea by using an air bubble inside his capsized boat. the 62-year-old was rescued from the icy waters of the Atlantic ocean by the spanish coastguard, who labelled the feat as “verging on impossible”. spain’s coastguard found the 12-metre sailing boat face down after receiving a distress signal late in the evening. however, the sailor had to wait until morning for a rescue

because the sea was too choppy. the boat, named Jeanne solo sailor, sent out the call for help 22 kilometres (14 miles) off the sisargas islands near spain’s north-western galicia region. it had set off the day before from the Portuguese capital, Lisbon. three helicopters and a rescue ship were scrambled to rescue the man, who has not been named, after they received the distress signal

at 10:23pm local time. one of the helicopters discovered the upturned vessel as the sun was setting and sent a diver down to check for signs of life. the Frenchman banged on the inside of his ship to let know rescuers he was alive. he was found wearing a neoprene survival suit and submerged in water up to his knees. the sea at this point was too rough to attempt a rescue and visibility had grown poor.

Coastguard members attached buoyancy balloons to the boat to stop it from sinking into the freezing waters and waited until the morning. two divers swam under the boat to help free the sailor the next day.

Vicente Cobelo, a member of the coastguard’s special operations team, told spanish media that the man then jumped into the freezing water and swam under the boat to reach his rescuers.

“of his own initiative he got into the water and freedived out, helped by the divers who had to pull him through because it was difficult for him to get out in his suit,” Cobelo said. divers at the coastguard described the operation as “verging on impossible”. the man was airlifted to safety and taken to hospital for checks, and was discharged soon afterwards with no issues.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the bank of england (Boe) raised uK interest rates by 50bps to 1.75% yesterday. that represented the biggest single hike from the Boe since they were granted independence over uK monetary policy, back in May 1997.

Whilst the move may had been widely expected, the commentary that followed it, clearly hadn’t. As well as revising their latest forecasts to reflect weaker uK growth, the Boe also projected inflation to peak at a whopping 13.3% by october of this year.

Aside from those inflation predictions, the biggest headlines came from the Boe’s expectation that the uK is likely to slip into a deep recession by the end of the year, lasting perhaps as long as 5 quarters, before a recovery. the Boe must be the only major central bank in the universe to be as candid as to hike interest rates by a substantial amount, at the same time projecting a deep-rooted recession. however, that is what the lay of the land is, as they say, and with those lofty inflation expectations, the Boe obviously considered it right to front-load on rates, just in case that looming recession creeps up a bit faster.

Andrew Bailey and the Boe have said that whilst the uK economy is suffering some unique circumstances from Brexit, there are cracks appearing in many economies right now. it is difficult to imagine other major central banks delivering their outlook in such an open manner. the pound took the brunt of the market fallout from those Boe projections, and gBP/usd slipped from above 1.2200 to around 1.2065, before a decent pullback moved the pair back over 1.2150 by the european close. honesty is

the best policy, as they say. gBP/euR followed suit, and slipped from around 1.1980 ahead of the Boe to 1.1850, before a sharp recovery towards 1.1900. next week is the turn of the latest growth figures from the uK, and having surprised to the upside last month (at 0.8%), there will be much attention paid to gauge the state of the economy, especially given the Boe’s rather sombre and downbeat outlook.

EURO it has been a fairly calm week for the single currency. After the fanfare around parity and the eCB’s rate hike recently, moves have been far more moderate. For example, euR/usd has managed to remain above 1.0100, without being able to move above 1.0300 throughout this week (before Friday). As we said in the gBP section, gBP/euR has been far more volatile, but the moves there were being impacted by sterling’s fortunes for the most part. on the data front, Retail sales for the region marked a sharp downturn of 3.7% through June, reflecting weak consumer demand, in part impacted by those bulging energy costs. some slightly better PMi readings partially helped to offset, with the s&P global Composite for the region nearly moving back over 50, at 49.9.

After some particularly weak data of late, the latest german inflation reading next week will be closely monitored. After tipping the scales at 8.5% last time round, harmonised CPi (YoY/ Jul) may decline to around 8.2%. that would be a welcome boost, if achieved, and will likely dictate the short-term direction for the single currency. sometimes no news is good news.

Minimum wage review spain’s minimum wage is set to go up again by next year as part of a longer-term plan to bring it to 60% of the national mean average salary, in accordance with european union guidelines. since the turn of the century and up to socialist president Pedro sánchez’s winning the elections in 2019, the minimum pay for a full-time, 40-hour-aweek job had been between just under 600 and 700 euros, reaching 735 euros a month by the time sánchez took up office. this is based upon 14 monthly pay packets per year, in line with a largely-diminishing tradition of giving workers a double salary in August and at Christmas – nowadays only really observed in the public sector and for state pensions.

By the end of 2021, the minimum wage under Pedro sánchez had risen to 965 euros a month over 14 months, or 13,510 euros per year. this, for employees who get 12 monthly wage packets per year, would equate to a take-home of approximately 1,054.30euros. in February 2022, the coalition government – run by the Psoe or socialists and its left-wing independent partners unidas Podemos – agreed for the minimum wage to rise to 1,000 euros a month in 14 payments, giving a total gross annual salary of 14,000 euros. this would result in 12 monthly take-home salaries of approximately 1,092.60 euros. sánchez says the minimum

salary will be reviewed ‘this autumn’ and is likely to rise by 2023, the final year of his current tenure.

Whilst not mandatory at present, the european Commission strongly advises member states to set their minimum wages at a figure not less than 60% of the national average individual income – even though this does not always reflect what the ‘standard’ earnings of a country are, since very high earners will always skew the figures. this recommendation falls within the european social Charter, drawn up in the aftermath of the continent-wide recession that led to widespread unemployment and poverty a decade or so ago. increasing the minimum wage, as well as making it easier

for workers to survive – and even spend money on nonnecessities – is crucial for clawing in government funds, too, since at present the lowest amount a person can earn for working 40 hours a week falls within the taxexemption threshold.

Although a couple living together, working full-time and on the minimum wage, with a mortgage, would be able to meet their expenses fairly comfortably, a single person or a couple with one or more children would find it difficult, if not impossible, to make ends meet on their present salary. in-work benefits do not exist in spain, although those earning sums well below the minimum wage may be able to apply for certain one-off annual council tax discounts, and reduced-rate electricity bills.

Love Island final sparks Ofcom complaints

The Love Island final has been overshadowed by Ofcom controversy as viewers claim the vote was ‘rigged,’ while episodes in the run up to the last episode attracted complaints over Luca Bish’s behaviour.

After two months of having millions tuning in every night, the new series of the ITV dating show came to an end, with host Laura Whitmore announcing Ekin-Su and Davide as winners, after confirming earlier in the show that Love Island’s ‘love or money’ twist had been axed.

Love Island voting figures have since revealed that Ekin-Su and Davide won by a huge margin, putting them well ahead of Gemma and Luca in second, Indiyah and Dami in third and Tasha and Andrew in fourth. While E kin-Su and Davide’s victory was met by an overwhelmingly positive response, the placings of the other couples caused quite a stir online, largely down to the fact that Gemma and

Luca were runners-up.

And broadcasting regulator Ofcom has confirmed that to date, 180 complaints have been received about the final, with the majority grievances about the voting.

The regulator also confirmed to The Mirror that a further 286 complaints were received in the run up to the final, with regard to Luca’s behaviour towards Gemma in the afermath of the Mile High challenge, when he took exception to her licking Adam Collard’s chest. As Islanders were told to gather round the fire pit, Luca was heard saying: “Let’s hope this text does us both a favour.”

Slamming the vote and questioning its authenticity, one unimpressed fan took to Twitter to post: “love island was rigged for Gemma im sorry,” with another tweeting: “I’m sorry I still can’t believe Gemma and Luca got second……

Christine Lampard issued a plea to viewers to ‘come and join’ Loose Women after it was announced the ITV panel show will finally welcome back a studio audience for the first time over two years. And her appeal had such a huge reaction that the show’s website crashed within minutes due to huge demand for tickets.

It was back at the start of 2020, that the lunchtime panel shows last welcomed fans into watch as camera rolled, before Covid hit and the country went into its first major lockdown of the pandemic. At the height of the restrictions, the Loose Women panel was limited on numbers, with at least one star forced to appear from home every episode.

The show’s line-up has been back at full capacity for a year now, but, one thing that has never returned is an audience.

Coleen Nolan had the job of confirming that Loose Women will welcome fans into the studio again from the start of September.

After Coleen broke the news, Christine said: “We’ve actually really

missed having a studio audience. It’s just us here, it’ll be so lovely to see you all coming back.”

She added: “We want to get as many of you as possible to fill up this studio from early September. It’s a chance to meet all of us and of course you can have a little sneak peek behind the scenes; the bits you don’t get to see on the telly.”

As Christine spoke details of how to apply for the free Loose Women audience tickets flashed up on screen and then, later on in the show, the host reported that there’d been so much interest that the website had crashed.”

Strictly Come Dancing 2022 launch date confirmed

The BBC has confirmed when the new series of Strictly Come Dancing will launch - and fans have little more than a month to wait until its return.

The dancing competition is back for its 20th series in September, forming part of the BBC’s centenary celebrations.

The launch show will be recorded on Wednesday7th September, meaning that fans can likely expect to find out the celebrity dance pairings for this year around the weekend of 10th September.

But the return of Strictly to our screens isn’t the only thing for viewers to get excited about - the BBC has confirmed that live audiences will be back in the studio for this year’s

series, after being absent in the previous two years due to Covid restrictions. Fans can now apply for tickets to see the Launch Show at Elstree Studios, hosted by Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman.

A statement on the BBC website said: “The stunning 20th series returns, bringing glamour and show stopping dancing back to Saturday nights on BBC One - and we’re extremely excited to be able to welcome an audience back to the studio for this year’s shows.”

Judges Shirley Ballas, Motsi Mabuse and Craig RevelHorwood will once again be joined by former pro contestant Anton Du Beke in the new series, after Bruno Tonioli announced

he was leaving the judging panel for good after almost two decades.

The new series will also see four new professional dancers join the competition, forming the biggest line-up in the show’s history. Vito Coppola, Carlos Gu, Michelle Tsiakkas and Lauren Oakley will all be fresh faces in the Strictly family this year.

Long-time Strictly viewers will notice a couple of other absences from the dance floor, with pros Aljaž Škorjanec and Oti Mabuse quitting the show after last year’s series. Exactly which famous faces will be donning dancing shoes this year is still being kept tightly under wraps, with announcements expected later this month.

Eastenders star was paid to lose weight Natalie Cassidy is best known for playing the role of Sonia Fowler in BBC’s EastEnders. She has been part of the soap since 1993, starting off her career when she was just 10-years-old.

With almost three decades playing Sonia under her belt, the now 39-year-old actress continues to enjoy a thriving acting career, but acting is not all she has been known for.

Natalie also once gave it a go being the face of a weightloss programme. In 2007, she released a weight-loss DVD after she herself managed to lose a lot of weight in a short space of time.

The DVD, called Natalie Cassidy’s Then and Now, was years later followed up by a second DVD, titled The Perfect Ten. But in a recent podcast, the TV star opened up about her regrets over making the DVDs, despite making a whopping £100,000 out of it.

Speaking on the Comfort Eating with Grace Dent podcast, the actress said: “I was very overweight and they approached me and said listen, we’re going to give you £100,000, we’re going to get you really fit and you’re going to lose four stone. I was like

happy days, let’s go for it. I just thought, that’s a lot of money; but it wasn’t the right thing to do. It wasn’t - you are losing a lot of weight in a three or fourmonth period, twelve or sixteen weeks, low calories and training every day.”

“I got there, and as soon as that DVD came out, I ate for England. I put all the weight back on in eight weeks.”

Natalie went on to joke that she could look like a supermodel like Kate Moss if it wasn’t for her love of mayonnaise. She also opened up on being fatshamed while taking part in 2009’s edition of Strictly Come Dancing.

Talking about how she felt ‘ridiculed’ while on the show she explained she was ‘about four stone bigger than I am now’. Speaking on the Ry-union podcast with Rylan Clark in February she said: “Vincenzo (Simone) was quite little. And I remember one week, it was like, ‘Oh we’re going to do this dance, but you’re going to pick up Vincent’.

“And I think about it now and I think, ‘Oh, that was out of order. It was a bit out of order to me.’ You couldn’t do that now.”

However, Natalie did confess that the experience was “the best job outside of EastEnders.”

Mixed signals from Netflix Longest running TV shows Netflix is the home of some of the biggest shows on television that have already run (or are guaranteed to run) for many seasons, but the streamer has also gained a reputation for canceling shows after just one batch of episodes. Now, as the writers of Stranger Things announced that they’re getting to work on the fifth and final season, news has broken that another show got the axe after just eight episodes this summer.

Stranger Things’ fourth season released the second of its two volumes back in early July, leaving fans on a doozy of a cliffhanger about the fate of not only Hawkins as a whole, but also Max as a character. There is no confirmation of when Season 5 will arrive to finish the Stranger Things story (and no guarantee that the wait will be shorter than between Seasons 3 and 4), but the writers had some encouraging news: The writers are officially getting back to work! They’ve had just a little over a month since fans got to see the twists and tragedies of the end of Season 4, which was the first in Stranger Things history that was fully written before filming began due to the pandemic delays. It’s not clear just yet if the Duffer brothers want to do the same thing for Season 5, but since these episodes will be the last, it seems like the right time to plan all the way ahead.

For a medium that’s not even a century old, television certainly has its fair share of elder statesmen. Some shows are seemingly endless series that feel like they’ve been around for as long as TV itself, here are some with the best innings...

While Stranger Things is already guaranteed one more season and at least one spinoff (with Stephen King pitching in his own spinoff idea), many other shows aren’t so lucky.

First Kill debuted on Netflix back in June as a fresh take on a vampire TV show, but reports claim that the streamer has axed the series less than two months after the premiere. It was based on a short story penned by best-selling author V.E. Schwab, and quickly gained a following, although there were some major differences between the show and story.

Fans have been campaigning for more, with “First Kill Season 2” trending on Twitter just hours before the cancellation was confirmed. The Season

1 ending definitely left some stories open-ended enough for a second season to pick up where it left off; sadly, it’s not happening. The teen vampire drama is also far from the only Netflix show to be cancelled after only one season. In fact, there’s enough of a trend of early cancellations that it can be risky for Netflix subscribers to fall in love with a new show.

Netflix actually cancels so many freshman shows and often without any fanfare that people don’t always even realise it until later. First Kill has gone the way of shows like Cowboy BeBop, Julie and the Phantoms, and Archive 81. Few that that don’t fall under the Stranger Things or Bridgerton umbrella feel entirely safe nowadays.

Doctor Who (1963–present) Seasons: 39 Episodes: 895 (and counting) The titular Time Lord in the BBC’s beloved sci-fi series has been wowing audiences for generations.

Part of its success lies in the Doctor’s regeneration McGuffin, which has enabled producers to insert new actors into the leading role at regular intervals over the decades.

Coronation Street (1960–present) Episodes: 10,504 (and counting) A bona fide senior citizen of the small screen, this beloved British soap opera has been beaming daily drama into peoples’ homes for more than 60 years now. Not bad for a show that one critic deemed to be “doomed from the outset” when it first aired in 1960.

Law & Order (1990–present) Seasons: 21 Episodes: 467 (and counting) D. Wolf’s long-running police

procedural helped blaze the trail that a string of episodic imitators have followed since. The show ran for 20 seasons from 1990 to 2010 before being revived over a decade later.

Mammoth burger Hungry diners could soon be tucking into mammoth burgers. Scientists are working on producing lab-grown ‘meat’ from woolly mammoths by analysing the DNA of the extinct creatures buried in ice.

The Belgian firm Paleo has already made plant-based meat protein based on beef, chicken and pork and now want to branch out into new flavours.

The company’s boss Hermes Sanctorum said: “I know that it’s a bit more exotic.

“I can imagine that not everyone is really into trying something like that. But at least we can show also that

we are able to produce something less obvious.”

Hermes added: “You can describe it as more meaty.”

The development will give humans the chance to taste a meatfree version of flesh that humans have not eaten for 12,000 years.

The experts at Paleo create the proteins through fermentation and the substance gives the meat a flavoursome taste without any animals being killed.

While the Western world is preoccupied with the rising cost of gas, inflation, and the war in Ukraine, East Africa is in crisis.

UN News reports that Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan are facing the worst drought in decades.

Reliefweb points out that data indicates that the rainy season in the region between MarchMay of 2022 was most likely the driest on record. Meteorologists say that the lack of rainfall and water has been exacerbated by very high temperatures, which are forecast to continue into September.

UN statistics show that over a million people have been displaced in Somalia and southern Ethiopia due to the climate crisis. Crops have been destroyed by the lack of rain in Eastern Africa, and food costs have increased. According to FNAU (Food Security and Nutrition Analysis Unit) it is estimated that 3.6 million livestock have died in Kenya and Ethiopia. However, the organisation points out that the worst hit country is Somalia where 1 of every 3 livestock have died since mid 2021. According to the UN, in Somalia, 7 million people (nearly half the country’s population) are at risk of famine in the next few months.

According to a new study by the World Food Programme and the Food and Agriculture Organization, more than 50

million people in Eastern Africa are facing food insecurity this year.

Rescue.org reports that in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Kenya, over 14 million people are “on the verge of starvation,” and roughly half of them are children.

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) warns that if the drought continues, food prices increase and world leaders do not increase aid funding, by September 2022, the number is expected to rise to 20 million. The region’s InterGovernmental Authority on Development issued the ‘IGAD Regional Focus on Food Crises’ report to sound the alarm on the malnutrition and food insecurity crisis in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan. The report stated that even if the best possible thing were to happen - it rained, it would still take the region months to recover. IRC points out that the only option at the moment to prevent a “catastrophic death toll” is an immediate increase in humanitarian aid.

According to UN News, Chimimba David Phiri, FAO Subregional Coordinator for Eastern Africa, the area is in a desperate situation.

Phiri said: “The current food security situation across the Horn of Africa is dire after four consecutive rainy seasons have failed, a climatic event not seen

in at least 40 years.” Phiri went on to speak about the urgent need to aid: “Now more than ever, we must implement short-term livelihood-saving responses with long-term resilience building aimed at addressing the root causes of food crises in our region.”

Experts say that the main culprits of the situation in East Africa are climate change and La Niña, which have caused an unusual multi-season drought.

According to Michael Dunford, World Food Programme Regional Director for Eastern Africa: “Conflict, climate extremes, economic shocks, rising costs and now the impact of the conflict in Ukraine on food and energy prices are pushing millions towards starvation in Eastern Africa.”

Dunford also states the importance of not only dealing with the current crisis but preparing for future problems.

Dunford believes that famines and droughts in the area are “increasingly inevitable because of a changing climate.”

Supermarkets scrap ‘Best Before’ dates It’s part of any supermarket trip – checking the product’s ‘best before’ date before you pop it in your trolley. ‘Best before’ is generally a guideline for quality, taste and freshness, added by the manufacturer, and is totally different to ‘use by’ dates which are about food safety.

You might use ‘best before’ to check if a loaf of bread will be good for several days of sandwiches, or determine how long you’ll have to polish off a punnet of fresh strawberries.

However, it seems that a change is coming to select supermarkets, which are slowly starting to ditch the ‘best before’ label on some of their fresh produce for a reason.

Essentially, some places are ditching ‘best before’ labelling in order to try and tackle food waste. According to the most recent estimates from the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP), 9.5 million tonnes of food was wasted in the UK over the course of one year (2018). Of that, 70% of food waste comes from households (6.6 million tonnes) – with only 30% of that figure representing the ‘inedible parts’ of food.

And, obviously, wasting food is far from ideal. Well, it’s a waste,

for one thing, and it’s expensive – but it’s also really bad for the environment. WRAP says in its most recent report that food waste in 2018 was ‘associated’ with 36 million tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions.

The argument is that ‘best before’ dates encourage people to throw out items of food when they’re still perfectly fine to eat, as again, ‘best before’ is all about quality rather than safety. People are being encouraged to make up their own minds, instead.

WRAP’s Director of Collaboration and Change, Catherine David, says: “Best before dates on fruit and veg are unnecessary and create food waste because they get in the way of people using their

judgement when food is still good to eat.”

And Marija Rompani, Director of Sustainability for John Lewis Partnership (owner of Waitrose), adds: “UK households throw away 4.5 million tonnes of edible food every year, meaning that all the energy and resources used in food production is wasted.

“By removing best before dates from our products, we want our customers to use their own judgement to decide whether a product is good to eat or not, which in turn will increase its chances of being eaten and not becoming waste.”

The move is quickly being adopted by the majority of UK supermarkets and is expected to spread across Europe.

How to cut back on sugar Wondering whether you should quit sugar, but not sure where to start? Over the years sugar has earned itself a bit of a bad rap.

Often associated with weight gain and illness, it has been the target of many a fad diet dressed as a health intervention.

In reality, though, context is key when it comes to sugar intake – same as is it with all nutrients. It’s true that, when eaten in excess, sugar can be detrimental to your health. But, eaten in moderation, there’s no cause for concern.

Sugar is a carbohydrate – one of the three macronutrients and essential for, well, life. There are four main types of sugar – glucose, fructose, lactose, and sucrose. Sucrose is the type of sugar that makes cakes and sweet drinks delish, and is the one most often associated with negative side effects, whilst fructose is a naturally-occurring sugar found in fruits, and lactose a naturally-occurring sugar found in dairy products. Foods high in glucose include honey, agave and fruit juices.

What’s the difference between the four main types of sugar? Simply, the nutritional profile of the foods each type of sugar is found in. Sucrose is often referred to as empty calories because it’s added to foods and drinks for flavour, but has very little to offer in terms of nutritional benefits. The other three types of sugar are naturallyoccurring in fruits, vegetables, bread, pasta, milk (you get the idea) – all produce that contains a variety of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals.

Eating too much of any type of sugar over a prolonged period can wreak all sorts of havoc on your organs and can rot your teeth. But, and listen close: there’s nothing at all wrong with eating sugar as part of a

nutritious and balanced diet.

If you’re still keen to quit sugar or reduce your sugar intake, be sure to consult your healthcare provider before making any changes to your diet – particularly if you’re pregnant, on medication, or have a history of, or are at risk of, disordered eating patterns.

How much sugar is okay to eat?

Guidelines currently state that sugar shouldn’t make up more than 5% of your daily calorie intake a day. So, 30g (the equivalent of around 7 sugar cubes) of free sugars a day is an advisable limit. This does not include naturally-occurring sugars found in your morning banana or 4pm apple. For context, a can of cola has around 9 cubes of sugar. some people find that going three days cold turkey (including sugar from fruits and juices) can recalibrate their palette, so that they can taste the natural sugars in vegetables and fruit more, while most sugar-free nutrition plans take you through eight weeks of nada sweet stuff, followed by a reintroduction phase for fruits and small allowances for dark chocolate and the like.

It’s crucial to note here that everyone’s different – some will find it easier to reduce sugar intake than others, and cutting out many sources of sugars isn’t for everyone.

What happens when you cut out sugar depends on how much sugar you were taking in previously, lifestyle factors, such as nutrition, hydration, stress and sleep quality, and also personal factors, including age and genetics. Since sugar is recognised as having potentially addictive properties you may experience some symptoms of

withdrawal in the first couple of weeks after cutting back.

These could include: • Anxiousness, restlessness or nervousness • Depressive mood • Brain fog, or difficulty concentrating • Changes in sleep patterns • Light-headedness • Nausea • Fatigue • Cravings It’s thought that the sugar withdrawal stage passes after the first few weeks, so whilst you may experience symptoms like those listed above to begin with, they should have eased by around the 21-day mark.

There are, of course, benefits to reducing your sugar intake so it falls within guidelines. These include a reduced risk of illnesses including heart disease, some cancers and type 2 diabetes, and it can also help to prevent tooth decay.

Again, there’s no knowing how your body will respond to quitting sugar. We’d reiterate, though, that it’s often not necessary to quit sugar entirely – eaten in moderation and as part of a nutritious and balanced diet, sugar is both innocuous and enjoyable.

Spanish siesta could increase Dementia link to saturated fats stroke and blood pressure risk Napping on a regular basis is associated with higher risks for high blood pressure and stroke, according to new research.

The study, conducted by researchers at Xiangya Hospital Central South University in China’s Hunan, looked at 360,000 people in the UK between the ages of 40 and 69 years. It found that frequent napping was linked with high blood pressure, which contributes to stroke and heart attacks.

Participants provided information about their sleep habits, among other lifestyle factors, between 2006 and 2019. They were followed up for an average of 11 years each.

Participants were divided into groups based on self-reported napping frequency: “never/ rarely,” “sometimes,” or “usually.”

The study found: • When compared to people who reported never taking a nap, people who usually nap had a 12% higher likelihood of developing high blood pressure and 24% higher likelihood of having a stroke; • Participants younger than age 60 who usually napped had a 20% higher risk of developing high blood pressure compared to people the same age who never napped. After age 60, usual

napping was associated with 10% higher risk of high blood pressure compared to those who reported never napping; • About three-fourths of participants remained in the same napping category throughout the study; • If napping frequency increased by one category (from never to sometimes or sometimes to usually) high blood pressure risk increased 40% • A higher percentage of usualnappers were men Dr E Wang, the study’s corresponding author, said taking a nap in itself was not harmful.

However, napping could be a sign that someone was getting a poor night sleep, which in itself was linked with worse health

outcomes.

Dr Wang said: “These results are especially interesting since millions of people might enjoy a regular, or even daily nap.”

While a bad night’s sleep and a subsequent nap - every now and again wasn’t going to kill you, the evidence points towards chronically bad sleepers being more likely to suffer from health conditions such as type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

According to sleep expert and professor of psychiatry at the University of Arizona in Tucson, Dr Michael A. Grandner, naps were “not enough” to offset the harms of sleep deprivation.

Dr Grandner said the study echoed other findings which generally showed that taking more naps seemed to reflect increased risks for problems with heart health and other issues.

Dementia is rife across Europe and many more people will succumb to brain decline in the coming decades as populations age. Research suggests a popular food item can “speed up” formation of plaques in the brain.

Dementia is a destructive set of symptoms associated with brain decline. Memory loss, which starts off mild at first, eventually leads to a complete dissociation from reality, as knowledge of self and loved ones fades. However, green shoots continue to emerge in the fight against dementia.

Research suggests you can modify your risk of brain decline by overhauling your diet.

According to Harvard Health, this means cutting back on foods high in cholesterol and fat.

Why? The health body says foods high in cholesterol and fat might “speed up the formation of beta-amyloid plaques in the brain”.

These sticky protein clusters are blamed for much of the damage that occurs in the brains of people with Alzheimer’s disease - the most common cause of dementia. It’s worth mentioning that this theory has been brought into disrepute after a recent six-month investigation by the journal Science reported “shockingly blatant” evidence that the findings underpinning this theory for decades may have

been fabricated.

Nonetheless, that steak you’re about to slice into is loaded with saturated fat, which is known to raise blood levels of unhealthy low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.

LDL cholesterol builds up in, and damages, arteries. “We know that’s bad for your heart.

There is now a lot of evidence that it’s also bad for your brain,” said Doctor Francine Grodstein, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and associate epidemiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Indeed, a study published in the journal Annals of Neurology found women who ate the most saturated fats from foods such as red meat and butter performed worse on tests of thinking and memory than women who ate the lowest amounts of these fats.

The exact reason for the connection between diets high in saturated and trans fats and poorer memory isn’t entirely clear, but the relationship may

be mediated by a gene called apolipoprotein E, or APOE. This gene is associated with the amount of cholesterol in your blood, and people with a variation of this gene, called APOE e4 are at greater risk for Alzheimer’s disease.

“About 65 percent of individuals who wind up with dementia due to Alzheimer’s disease in their 60s and 70s have that gene,” said Doctor Gad Marshall, assistant professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School, who was not involved in the study.

This finding is backed up by a 2021 study published in The American Journal of Human Nutrition. In the study of more than 1,200 people, researchers found that individuals with higher levels of saturated fats in their blood were more likely to develop dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. However, other studies provide a more mixed picture, so definitive conclusions cannot be drawn.

Simple test to detect breast cancer A simple test can detect early breast cancer in young women, according to scientists. Scientists have spoken out over the breakthrough. The Trucheck test correctly identifies 92 percent of breast cancers. It highlights cancer cells which are in the blood, according to scientists.

Breast cancer surgeon Professor Kefah Mokbel says a “paradigm shift” could be seen in breast cancer screening. He said: “Potentially, this test is a game-changer. It could transform breast cancer screening.”

Medical oncologist Dr Tim Crook, from The London Clinic private hospital, said: “We have a massive problem with late diagnosis of cancer in this country and it’s been difficult to think of ways to ameliorate that.”

Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK. Most women diagnosed with breast cancer are over the age of 50, but younger women can also get breast cancer.

About 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime.

There’s a good chance of recovery if it’s detected at an early stage.

For this reason, it’s vital that women check their breasts regularly for any changes and always have any changes examined by a GP. Breast cancer treatment can be highly effective, especially when the disease is identified early. Drink and Drugs Don’t Mix with Driving The DGT forecasts that this month there will be 49 million journeys on the roads of Spain. August is the period of the year in which a greater number of people travel to enjoy their holidays and the DGT has already warned that during all weekends it will launch special traffic regulation and surveillance devices.

But in addition, the DGT will monitor with special intensity the consumption of alcohol and drugs at the wheel in a special control campaign, which will last throughout this week and into the weekend.

The controls in which the consumption of alcohol and drugs among drivers will be especially monitored will last until 15 August. The DGT has already warned that these preventive controls will be carried out “at any time of the day and on any road”.

It should be remembered that the new Traffic Law approved this year has introduced the 0 rate of alcohol, both in blood and in exhaled air, for drivers under 18 years of age in all types of vehicles, not only cars but also bicycles, scooters and mopeds with AM and A1 permission. In addition, this regulation includes the obligation that all newly manufactured vehicles dedicated to passenger transport carry a preinstallation of the so-called alcolock, a device connected to the ignition system that prevents the vehicle from starting if the driver exceeds the permitted alcohol level.

The detection tests for narcotic substances are carried out independently of the breathalyser tests or after them when the agents perceive signs of driving under the influence or during preventive controls.

To perform the drugs test, the driver gives a saliva sample, which is collected in a special capsule. A device analyses it and, if the result is positive, a second sample is taken and sent to a laboratory for analysis. The positive laboratory test will serve to establish the sanction and identifies five types of substances: amphetamines, cocaine, methamphetamines, cannabis, and opiates.

To do the breathalyser test, the officer hands a breathalyser to the driver. This device detects the concentration of alcohol in expired air. To reduce the margin of error, two types are used: one more sensitive and the other more specific.

The driver breathes in and out the air in the breathalyser. If the rate is negative (0-0.25 mg/l), the agents allow the driver to continue driving. If it is positive (+0.25 mg/l), the driver can ask for a blood confirmation and the vehicle will be immobilised. Depending on the rate, it will carry a fine and loss of points.

The DGT will monitor these days especially that drugs or alcohol are not consumed and appeals to the responsibility of drivers so that these substances are zero at the wheel. Driving

with a level of alcohol greater than 0.50 mg/l in exhaled air, driving with the presence of drugs in the body, refusing to take alcohol and drug tests or driving with a level greater than 0.30 mg/l in expired air if you are a professional driver or your license is not more than 2 years old are behaviours punished with six points lostfrom the licence and a fine of 1,000 euro. In addition, these violations can be considered a criminal offence.

Driving with an alcohol level of between 0.25 mg/l and 0.50 mg/l or with a rate of between 0.15 and 0.30 mg/l is also punished with the loss of four points and a fine of 500 euro. in the case of professional drivers and drivers with a licence for less than two years, infractions that can also constitute a criminal offence.

Alcohol, drugs and psychopharmaceuticals are a major road safety problem. In fact, half of the drivers killed in traffic incidents last year tested positive for one of these substances or a combination of them.

In addition, 75% of motorists who tested positive had a very high blood alcohol level, equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l, which represents very severe intoxication, according to the conclusions included in the Memory of Toxicological Findings in Victims of Traffic Accident, prepared by the National Institute of Toxicology and Forensic Sciences (INTCF), with the collaboration of the National Road Safety Observatory.

Although, at first glance, they may look just like any other traffic cone, the DGT has been testing a new version of the somewhat infamous road safety device, the Smart Cone.

PF CONE, to use the actual name, is the first and only geolocated cone in the world and has been developed by ERUM VIAL in collaboration with the DGT. The cone is capable of connecting with the new platform that the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is developing, known as DGT 3.0, as well as other government entities, State security forces such as the police and Guardia Civil, and the fire department, among others.

PF CONE provides information on the exact location where an accident, incident, natural disaster or area where road maintenance work is being carried out has occurred.

It has a high intensity flashing light, 360º retroreflective tape and a solid base that provides maximum stability and adherence to all types of terrain, especially asphalt.

PF CONE has NB-IoT connection, long

battery life, optional solar charging, multiple synchronisations through remote control and sim card connected to a telephony operator.

PF CONE has been designed to signal and geolocate places where there is danger, some type of risk, emergencies, breakdowns or accidents, especially areas where road maintenance tasks, asphalting of roads, works, fire zones, floods, etc. or other danger zones.

The direction of the DGT towards road safety and the goal of achieving zero fatal incidents on the road is increasingly more technological. We have already seen how road users can now use the V-16 beacon lights to replace triangles, but in the future these devices will also be able to connect to the DGT 3.0 platform, so that the exact location of an individual emergency is known in real time, all that remains is for the signals to become smart and connected. Precisely, this last step is the one that is being tested with the smart cone, and, for the moment, the

results are satisfactory.

The General Directorate of Traffic is launching the use of its new intelligent cones, which are distinguished from the traditional ones only by two small devices, as if they were light bulbs, that protrude from the tip of the cone. With this new accessory, the cones become beacons connected to the digital platform of the DGT and to the vehicles, in turn, connected to that.

The objective is for there to be a constant flow of information between what is happening on the road and the vehicles that circulate on it, in order to avoid unforeseen events and maintain safety thanks to the ability to anticipate traffic conditions in real time.

The first field tests have been carried out during the ‘Gran FondoÉzaro-Fin do Camiño’ test, held on the Costa da Morte (Galicia) in July. Thanks to these cones, in addition to other devices, the vehicles were able to have all the necessary information in real time about the sections affected by this cycling test to choose the route that best suited them without suffering delays or excessively long detours.

During the development of the DGT 3.0 sports tests, V2 beacons were used in the start and tail cars of the competition, as well as smart cones on the roads surrounding the route of the sporting event that broadcast information to the platform at all times.

Once processed and compared with the route of the sporting event from TRAZA (the DGT application for sports authorisations), the sections affected by the event could be published in real time. This process allowed participating drivers to be sent notices to their car navigators.

The evaluation of the DGT of the test has been positive and, thus, a further step has been taken in the objective of creating a platform in which all the actors who make use of the circulation routes are connected anonymously, both for provide information to consume it, in order to detect and receive information about dangerous situations that may arise on the road while driving.

The Connected Vehicle 3.0 platform becomes an access point for unique, free and truthful information in real time about what is happening on the roads, information of great value for the entire mobility ecosystem in the national territory.

Ingredients 100g wholemeal spaghetti 1 large onion , sliced 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 1 red chilli , deseeded and sliced 2 garlic cloves , chopped 200g cherry tomatoes , halved 1 tsp cider vinegar 2 tsp capers 5 Kalamata olives , halved ½ tsp smoked paprika 2 skinless cod fillet or loins 160g spinach leaves Small handful chopped parsley, to serve

Method STEP 1 Boil the spaghetti for 10 mins until al dente, adding the spinach for the last 2 mins. Meanwhile, fry the onion in the oil in a large non-stick frying pan with a lid until tender and turning golden.

Stir in the chilli and garlic, then add the tomatoes.

STEP 2 Add the vinegar, capers, olives and paprika with a ladleful of the pasta water. Put the cod fillets on top, then cover the pan and cook for 5-7 mins until the fish just flakes. Drain the pasta and wilted spinach and pile on to plates, then top with the fish and sauce. Sprinkle over some parsley to serve.

Chorizo & chilli pepper pasta

Ingredients 200g penne ½ tbsp olive oil 100g chorizo , skin removed and cut into chunks 400g can cherry tomatoes 2-3 guindilla pickled chilli peppers, sliced on an angle ½ small pack basil , leaves picked and roughly torn Parmesan , grated, to serve Method STEP 1 Bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Add the pasta, give it a good stir, then cook for 1 min less

than pack instructions, about 9-10 mins.

STEP 2 Heat the oil in a sauté pan over a high heat. Add the chorizo and cook for a couple of mins until the oils have been released, then add the tomatoes, a pinch of sugar and some seasoning. Bubble away for 5 mins, then drain the pasta, toss it through the sauce and stir in the peppers and basil. Serve with a generous grating of parmesan scattered over.

Beetroot & feta pasta

Ingredients 2 large beetroots, peeled and roughly chopped into chunks 1 tbsp olive oil 2 onions, finely chopped 4 celery sticks, finely chopped, celery tops kept separate 4 carrots, peeled and finely chopped 1 small bunch of basil 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 400g wholemeal pasta 75g low-fat crème fraîche 100g feta Method STEP 1 Put a large pan of salted water on a high heat, bring to the boil and add the beetroot chunks. Boil for 5 mins, then transfer the beetroot to a plate using a slotted spoon. Set the pan of cooking water aside.

STEP 2 Meanwhile, put the olive oil in a large frying pan set over a medium heat, then add the onions, celery and carrots, and cook for 8 mins until softened. Finely chop the basil stalks and celery tops, then add to the pan along with the garlic, and fry for another 30 seconds.

STEP 4 Meanwhile, put the beetroot with half of the fried veg into the bowl of a food processor with most of the basil leaves and the crème fraîche, then blitz until smooth. Gradually add the reserved pasta water to loosen until you have a thick mixture.

STEP 3 Tip the pasta into the pan of beetroot water and simmer for 1315 mins (depending on what pasta you’re using) until just cooked but retaining a little bite. Drain, reserving 200ml of the pasta water and tip the pasta back into the pan.

STEP 5 Stir this sauce through the pasta along with the remaining fried veg and some seasoning. Divide between bowls, crumble over the feta, then scatter with the remaining basil leaves. Grind over some black pepper, if you like.

This was the sixth year of playing for the “Vicky Heynes Memorial Cup” sadly the sponsor, Tony Heynes, was unable to make it to Spain, for the competition.

The day started with the usualfull English breakfastat Imanyo’s where the draw was held, a little low on numbers compared to our previous games mainly due to the 40 degrees temperature.17 players took part and the format was full handicap Stableford split into two groups. After a tour round Murcia, where we found Hacienda Restaurant not golf course, Sat Nav and Tom Tom Steve and Brian eventually arrived 10 mins after the start tee time!the course was in bettercondition than the last time we played there but still a work in progress.

Winner of group B, and overall winner for the second time was “The Talker” Steve Matherswith another handicap cutting score of 41 points, runner up of group B was “I don’t play a lot” Alex Porteouswith a handicap cutting score

of 40 points. Winnerof group A on count back with “Mr Amstel” Peter Kelly was “Three Clubs” Sean McGuiness with 33 points,runner up was Peter Kelly also with 33 points. There were six nearest the pins, winners group A there was a tie-on hole 3 in 3 shots between Ken Waller and Chris Houghton, hole 11 “Three Clubs” Sean McGuinness and hole 15 “Fruit Farmer” Tom Goulden, group B holes 4 and 10 “I don’t play a lot” Alex Porteousan hole 17 our own Miguel Garcia.

Ten Hag Grossed out by United display as Trent suffers from dry pitch syndrome It’s back folks, it’s back. What feels like a mere fortnight since Man City lifted last season’s Premier League title and we’re back again.

Not a lot has changed to be honest.

Man United are still rubbish. King Klopp is still finding bizarre things to blame when his team don’t do well.

Tottenham and Arsenal both think “this might be the season”.

And we love it, don’t we?

Up at Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag was totally Grossed out by Manchester United’s performance against Brighton. I mean, the clues were there after 20 seconds really. Diogo Dalot took a sloppy touch, Leonardo Trossard stole the ball and shot just wide.

You could argue it was a genius move by Ten Hag - making sure that expectations went even lower than before in the first half so that he could only start to look like a genius when they came out and won it in the second half. You can understand the plan - there was a time that United going into the break 2-0 down pretty much guaranteed they’d come out and win 3-2, somehow. Not nowadays, that’s for sure - even if they were a lot better after the break.

There was a certain irony at United having to go into this game without a proper striker - and watching Danny Welbeck, deemed not good enough anymore for the Red Devils several years ago, making muppets out of Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.

On the bench, Cristiano Ronaldo wore the expression of a man saying “and you wonder why I want to leave?” and to be fair, even he couldn’t be blamed for this one.

But then, what do you expect when you choose to go into the match keeping Maguire as captain despite his form falling quicker than the Conservatives’ faith in Boris Johnson to organise a drinks party in a brewery? And a strike force that has a children’s author and a guy that had a heart attack just over a year ago? No offence, Christian, you know.

United’s performance meant that it was around the 35th minute when even the most anti-Ronaldo voices started to say he should probably be coming on soon. And he was into the action shortly into the second half as Ten Hag opted for an old Alex Ferguson ploy - throw as many attacking players on to the field as possible and hope for the best.

And come the full-time whistle, I was half expecting ETH to remove a mask and reveal himself to be Ralf Rangnick.

No matter how bad United were in the first half, Brighton were very good throughout. In Caceido, they had the kind of midfielder that the Glaziers needed to sign years ago.

Jurgen Klopp is right, after all. It must have been a “dry pitch” that meant Trent Alexander-Arnold shrunk 30 centimetres at the far post as Big Mitro headed Fulham ahead at Craven Cottage.

It was mentioned last week that

nobody should read too much into the fact that Klopp’s mentality monsters won the Community Shield at Wembley. It was clear within three minutes that Fulham were taking this one just a little more seriously than City took the glorified pre-season friendly last weekend.

Marco Silva’s side had a real go at the title wannabes and Mitrovic, aside from bullying England’s most bestest of world-class right backs, also made a bit of a muggins of Virgil van Dijk too winning the penalty that the big Serb converted.

It wasn’t all doom and gloom for Liverpool, though. Darwin Nunez looked as dangerous as he does pretty and his first real touch was a backheel flick into the net. He also laid on Mo Salah’s customary opening day goal, albeit if it was a poor touch that happened to land to the Egyptian.

Klopp, as well as blaming the pitch, also said he was 12/10 unhappy with the performance. You can understand why - a team that almost everyone is tipping to go down put the wind up the Reds. They won’t be that bad again, will they?

Whilst United were making fools of themselves and Liverpool had an off day, Peppy G was able to sit back serenely has City picked up their customary three points at the London Stadium.

Positives for West Ham? 55,000 season tickets sold. 62,000 plus in attendance, some of which had a good view of Erling Haaland making his Premier League debut for the champions and doing exactly what was expected after last weekend scoring and generally looking a bit of a handful. The other positive? They only have to play City once more in the league this season.

I’ll admit, I found a lot of Man City’s performance far less bright than that shocking away kit they were wearing.

It was all a bit easy, a bit slow - until they fancied scoring of course, then it was warp speed.

Haaland scored two after the penny clicked for City’s creators - he needs the ball to be able to score. Twice he was played in behind, twice goals followed - the first after he won a clear penalty and scored it, the second after he ran in behind and the West Ham players started lining up for the kickoff before he’d even finished it was that obvious what was coming.

Nunez might have won the first head-to-head of the massive money strikers, but there is no doubt at all that Haaland took round two.

The thing I disliked most about City’s performance in London? Joao Cancelo wearing number 7. And yes, I know he spent most of his time playing centre mid with Kyle Walker.

It’s still not cool.

What’s this? Tottenham winning 4-1 on the opening day of the season and neither Harry Kane (no real shock, it’s August) and Heung-Min Son scored?

Frank Lampard might be many people’s favourite to get the Premier League chop first this season but I’m going with Ralph Hassenhuttl which will be a shame - we’ll lose that snazzy pitchside attire he flipped to in the middle of last season and is still going with this campaign.

I like Hassenhuttl, but you do worry how many more complete batterings he can survive before the new owners believe they can probably do a bit better.

Antonio Conte will have been delighted - Spurs went behind and then fought like dogs to turn it around.

Can they mount a title challenge? If that’s what finishing third this season looks like, yes.

I spent most of last week wondering whether Mikel Arteta watched “All or Nothing” and spent most of the time cringing. Is it possible for anyone to come out of these fly-on-the-wall not looking like David Brent but with better hair?

Fortunately, the only thing that would distract most people from that car-crash of an opening episode would be three points on Friday night against Crystal Palace. The Gunners duly delivered, Gabby Jesus looking very bright on debut. William Saliba also somehow made the crazy plan to sign him for £30m and then loan him out for what felt like the next five seasons look like a great call. He was very assured as Arsenal beat Patrick Vieira’s side 2-0.

I am starting to find Thomas Tuchel quite curious. In signing Raheem Sterling, he bought one of the most dangerous wide left forwards in world football, someone who almost guarantees 20 to 25 goals a season from that position. He is also a very average false 9. In Kai Havertz, he has one of the best false 9s in the game.

Havertz is also a very average wide left forward. So guess how Tommy T lined them up against Everton? Yep. There wasn’t a proper striker to be seen for miles at Goodison Park as Lampard also had to play a winger through the middle after Dominic Calvert-Lewin picked up yet another knock in training.

As a result, there wasn’t much goalmouth action either - even with there being about 18 minutes injury time in the whole match. Most of this came from Ben Godfrey fracturing his leg in several places, racing back to cover yet another moment of Jordan Pickford madness. Just let it go out for the corner, Jordan. You were never going to get there.

Doucoure must have not noticed the bearhug he gave Ben Chilwell that led to Chelsea’s penalty, such were his protestations of innocence. Jorginho scored this one - the commentators

making much of the fact he missed his last one against Pickford (as if that mattered, given Italy won the shootout).

It wasn’t much of a game, but that’s how Chelsea used to win most of their games when they used to win the Premier League.

So, Bournemouth are going down, are they? Not based on that performance. Scotty Parker has obviously learned that having a mammoth number 9 in the Premier League isn’t dirty after he left Mitro on the bench for the entire season that Fulham got relegated last time.

Big Keifer Moore is a Premier League goalscorer and Aston Villa were utterly awful.

Steven Gerrard laid into his players post-match and I was left wondering when was the last time Philippe Coutinho actually played well in a Villa shirt?

So, Leeds are going down, are they? Yep, the irony of all three teams I predicted to get relegated this season getting through the weekend unbeaten is not lost on me - but then anyone foolish enough to have been reading this rubbish over the years knows I get it right as often as Maguire looks like an international defender. Fulham were my other pick, if interested.

Leeds outfought Wolves on and off the pitch and thoroughly deserved their 2-1 win. Patrick Bamford was rewarded with the captain’s armband for the game, presumably for just being fit for once.

Leicester went into a game of football without Kasper Schmeichel a permanent fixture in goal for the first time in a very long time. Without any signings at all, brave considering how average they ended up being last season, Rodgers’ side led Brentford 2-0 before doing exactly what they did loads last season and giving it all away. Ivan Toney and Jay Da Silva made the most of the Foxes’ inability to close matches out and nicked a 2-2 draw.

Up at St James’ Park, Calum Wilson is the opening day opposite of Harry Kane. Wilson scored yet another in the first weekend of football as Newcastle beat newly promoted Nottingham

Forest (I’ve predicted them to stay up) 2-0. Having spent the week slating Man United for wasting a year of his life, it was quite nice to see Fabian Scharr humble Dean Henderson with an absolute thunderbolt from distance.

What else happened in football last week? Well, Chelsea spanked £60m on a Brighton left-back who City wanted and has only played just under a year of Premier League matches. Man United realised the answer to their problem striker who kills team morale is to try and buy Marko Arnautovic.

Callum Hudson-Odoi wants out of Chelsea if he can’t even get on a nineman bench and fancies moving to Leicester on loan. Chelsea still want Frenkie De Jong as they can’t come up with their own transfer targets and Barcelona (yes, really) have agreed a deal for Marcos Alonso even though they cannot register most of their summer signings because La Liga are quite picky about wage caps and things like that.
