Residents group wants action over scooters An orihuela Costa Residents group wants action from the town hall over the situation regarding rentable electric scooters on the coast. the Asociacion de Vecinos Cabo Roig y Lomas (AVCRL) said that in recent months there has been an abundance of electric scooters, rented by users through an app. these scooters, say AVCRL “are proliferating throughout orihuela Costa” the residents association group

said via a statement issued on its social media channels, “it is easy to see scooters lying on the ground, in the middle of pavements, in front of the exit gates of urbanisations and in other unsuitable places causing problems for pedestrians. You can also see scooters riding on the pavements while others carry two people (sometimes even two adults and a child), both of which are forbidden by law.”

200 people gather to save Doña Sinforosa park

Around 200 people gathered at doña sinforosa park at the weekend to stage a protest in the hope of saving the park in the face of the skyscrapers that are set to be built alongside the site. organisers Psoe, Los Verdes and sueña alongside local residents are asking that the developers behind the 26 storey towers respect the emblematic park as part of the development. the protest was preceded by the collection

of around 2000 signatures in support of the gathering to save the park. the plans for the area around the skyscraper project is to pave the area and create a new and modern communal green area. Residents argue that the park should be preserved as it is with its hundred year old trees and unique character. organisers have said that new protests will be planned if their requests are not taken into account.

Benijofar bank robbers arrested

guardia Civil have arrested a gang of violent robbers that operated across the Alicante and Murcia provinces. the gang, said police, are responsible for bank robberies in the Murcian town of Cobatillas and in Benijofar. during both robberies, the gang is alleged to have taken bank staff and customers hostage at gunpoint, one of the gang members had been apprehended for a previous crime and was serving a prison sentence. however, he was out on a temporary release permit and failed to return to prison. officers issued an arrest warrant and apprehended him and three others who also collaborated in the bank robberies. the original investigation began in March when guardia Civil started looking into a Murcia bank robbery. officers identified two men who had come into the bank armed, one with a gun and the other with a large knife. during the robbery the men used cable ties to restrain six people while they emptied the bank’s safe of 40,000 euro. three of those tied up during the robbery were ordinary bank customers who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Looking at the footage of the robbery, officers were able to recognise one of the perpetrators who turned out to be a well known robber with a long history of charges for similar crimes. in addition, there was already a warrant out for his arrest at the time of the bank robbery as he had failed to return to prison while on release. in May, guardia Civil arrested the alleged perpetrator behind a bank

Seven arrested for a brutal assault with baseball bats in Alicante

officers of the national Police have arrested the alleged perpetrators of a brutal attack in Alicante on a 27-yearold man, who was severely beaten with baseball bats, iron bars and even threatened with a knife. the victim was also struck on the head with a bottle, causing a wound that required eight stitches, reported the Provincial Police.

Reports indicate that the altercation was caused by a prior incident in May in which the two sides had had words. Both parties then recently ran into each other again at a well-known entertainment venue in the san Juan beach area, where a glass bottle was thrown at the victim, causing him an injury for which he had to receive two stitches. the victim reported such events at the Police station, although later he did not want to continue with the process, because he was afraid of reprisals from these individuals since they were part of a family gang well known in the criminal world. the alleged perpetrators of that attack issued death threats against the victim, telling him that if he appeared in the neighbourhood where they live, they would kill him, even going so far as to showing him a

gun to intimidate him. the day of the most recent and brutal assault, the victim went to that neighbourhood to see his family, who also live there. As it turns out, he was seen by a member of the family gang who quickly notified the rest. soon after, up to seven members of the gang appeared at the scene armed with baseball bats, iron bars and even one of them with a knife, which in the

end he could not use because the victim managed to snatch it from him. despite the fact that the injured party tried to flee and hide inside a bar, he was discovered by his assailants who began beat him with the bats and bars, they even threw the bar furniture at him and struck his head with a glass object, either a bottle or glass.

robbery in Benijofar. Again, it was a robbery with violence and intimidation, carried out with the same modus operandi as the robbery in Murcia earlier this year. during the robbery, the thieves used a firearm to threaten an employee inside the bank. Local police arrived and the perpetrators brought the bank employee out to the carpark at gunpoint before fleeing in a car and leaving the bank worker terrified but safe. shortly afterwards, officers from the Citizen security unit (useCiC) of torrevieja arrested the alleged bank robber in san Miguel de salinas, after he was seen recklessly driving on the AP-7 highway, driving in the opposite direction to traffic flow and skipping the Los Montesinos toll barrier. At the time of the arrest, the alleged robber was carrying, among other items, a gun, a knife and a mobile phone. it was also verified that there was an arrest warrant out in his name.

After the arrest, members of the Almoradí Judicial Police team opened another investigation to look more closely at the bank robbery and detected a series of similarities between the Benijofar and Murcia robberies. A joint investigation

team was established between the two provinces with the objective of solving both crimes and locating all perpetrators. the first steps of the joint operation ‘seim-Veterano’ allowed investigators to verify that the detainee in san Miguel de salinas for the robbery in Benijófar was, presumably, also the alleged perpetrator of the robbery committed in Murcia. in addition, it was found that both men involved in the bank heists were in charge of a group of criminals with whom they collaborated to commit crimes. officers continued with the investigation in an effort to locate the other leader and the rest of the members of the criminal gang. the evidence obtained after the first arrest, as well as other investigations, was decisive in locating the man who fled from prison. he had hidden in a house in the rural area of the Murcian municipality of Fortuna.

Alicante halves road deaths the Alicante province has halved its road deaths so far this year, compared to figures for the same period in 2019.

According to the latest report from the national Road safety observatory of the dgt, 12 people have lost their lives on interurban roads in the province in the first seven months of the year, half as much as in the last year before the pandemic, when 24 people died.

Last year, fatal accidents left 18 dead on the roads of the province until the end of July. the report does not compare the data with that of 2020, in which Alicante was the third province with the most deaths throughout the year, since the figures for that year cannot be compared due to the two months of confinement and general low mobility. it should also be noted that this report from the Road safety observatory only measures accidents on interurban roads. that is to say, it does not take into account fatal accidents on streets in cities and towns. the reduction in road deaths with the return of normality is positive, especially when data is compared with that coming from the rest of spain’s provinces, since the number of deaths on the roads at a national level has actually increased. Alicante is the second province that has reduced its total number of deaths, only behind Madrid, which has registered 13 fewer deaths than 2019. in terms of the total fatal accidents, Alicante is also in second place. the province registered 12 accidents in which someone lost their life, compared to the 22 three years ago.

Madrid is, also in this case, the only

province with better figures than Alicante, registering 14 fewer incidents during the same period of time.

At a regional level, taking into account the whole Valencian Community, the number of people who lost their lives in road traffic accidents has actually increased by 10.9%, in contrast to data from Alicante. so far this year, 51 people have lost their lives on the interurban roads of the Valencian Community, while three years ago the number of deaths on the same dates was 46.

Castellón is the province leading the increase, after increasing deaths on highways and motorways by 225% in the last three years. 13 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in the northernmost province of the Community, while in 2019 only 4 had lost their lives in the same period. the province of Valencia itself also registered a notable rise, with an increase of 44.4% in its deaths on the road.

At a national level, the number of deaths increased compared to 2019.

605 people lost their lives on the road in the first seven months of 2019. this number has risen to 640 this year, 5.8% more. the increase is even more notable when compared to last year’s data, in which, by this time of the year, 549 people had lost their lives throughout spain.

Cuenca, navarra and tarragona, in addition to Castellón, are the provinces with the highest increase in road deaths so far this year. At the opposite end of the scale, after Madrid and Alicante, are Pontevedra and Lleida where road deaths have decreased.

Noches de Ópera comes Tourist walks come to the coast for August to Orihuela Costa

Mar ezcurra, Councillor for Culture, has presented the annual programme to bring opera to orihuela Costa. this will see retransmissions of opera from the teatro Real and live concerts by different orchestras and musical groups from the municipality of orihuela. the nights of opera will take place on the promenade at Playa Flamenca beach front from now until to 4th september. Live concerts will take place every sunday and opera broadcasts will take place every Wednesday, both days starting at 8:30pm and admission is free. the Councillor for Culture, Mar ezcurra, explained that these activities “we have prepared so that all the residents of the coast and those who visit us during these summer weeks

can enjoy the best music in the open air and “all this in a beautiful place by the sea”. the operas of the teatro Real that will be broadcast this year are il trovatore on 3rd August; Rigoletto on 10th August; Lucía di Lammermoor on 17th August and the concert on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of Bethoven’s birth entitled ninth symphony, Ludwig Van Beethoven, on 24th August.

the tourist program for the month of August organised by the department of tourism is presenting a “Blue Path” walk on saturday, 6th August, which will run along the Cabo Roig path, in a two-kilometre walk along the orihuela coastline. the walk will leave from torre de Cabo Roig at 8:00pm and is of medium-low difficulty. “Cabo Roig is a marine area with high environmental and heritage value. We have taken advantage of this trail, which has been awarded its blue flag for the second consecutive year, and we intend to explain the biodiversity it houses, making known the values of the flora and fauna, geology, heritage and landscape of the natural environment. in addition to being an activity for the whole family and we will give a gift to the participants, “said María garcía, Councillor for tourism. the itinerary will cover the flora and

fauna of the coast, species such as the protected Jarilla de Cabeza de gato, sea fennel, cambrón and starfish, among others, will be seen. in terms of animals, the walk will take in the red-tailed lizard, plover and great cormorant, among others. “the route also focuses on the geological materials that make up the cliffs and beaches, as well as the great historical and archaeological heritage value, such as the torre de Cabo Roig, a watchtower-type military building from the 16th century, catalogued as a Well of Cultural interest,” added the councillor. the August program also has routes to discover the main monuments and palaces of the city as well as to learn about

A regional government u-turn will see orihuela Costa get a 24-hr ambulance service with its own dedicated sAMu ambulance. the government had previously claimed the 12-hr service, supported ‘out-of-hours´ by torrevieja and Pilar – both within 12km of the coast – was sufficient. the new 24-hr ambulance service will have a doctor, nurse and driver allocated permanently.

Local pressure groups and the previous coalition team have been battling to get a 24-hr ambulance service for several years and the campaign has been heightened with the opening of the orihuela Costa emergency services Centre in La Zenia.

however, it’s not all been good news this week as the calls to open a second health centre for the people of orihuela Costa seem to have fallen on deaf ears. this is despite land already being allocated for the facility. the motion to open a second health centre in orihuela Costa, long campaigned for by C.L.A.R.o., was presented by the opposition Popular Party together with the demand for the 24 hour emergency ambulance (sAMu). the Popular Party argued that a second health centre was necessary given the pressures on the existing centre in Cabo Roig.

Before the change of government in the spring,

the Popular Party, when governing in coalition with Ciudadanos had made land available in Las Ciñuelicas. this was suitably situated at a distance from the health centre at Cabo Roig in order to meet the needs of the dispersed population of orihuela Costa. they also pointed out that regional government finance was available and the motion was approved but, incredibly, opposed by the two current governing political parties Psoe and Ciudadanos. since the motion is not binding there is little hope that the Psoe-Ciudadanos coalition will now go ahead with the provision of a much needed second health centre for orihuela Costa.

Saint Emigdio church restored the town hall has carried out restoration works on the ‘hermitage’ of san emigdio in torrevieja’s park of nations. saint emigdio is the co patron of torrevieja and the protector of the town against earthquakes. the small church has had a 6000 euro repair job including works to restore the walls, damp protection, painting and the installation of Led lights.

Carmen gómez Candel recalled that starting this coming thursday, August 4, the park of nations will stage programme of events for the festivities in honour of san emigdio, a welcome return after two years of inactivity due to the pandemic. on sunday, August 7, at 8:00 p.m., in and around the hermitage church of san emigdio there will be a special mass celebration, followed by a solemn procession with the

statue of the saint accompanied by the band of the Musical society “Ciudad de torrevieja Los salerosos”. the route will run through Calles san Policarpo, Bilbao, santísima trinidad, Barrio Molinos, Plaza del Calvario, Calle san emigdio, José hurtado Romero “el Felisia” and, again, to Calle san Policarpo to return to the small church in the park. After the procession, a fireworks display will mark the end of the festivities.

guardia Civil have dismantled a criminal gang accused of transporting drugs out of spain and all over europe, hidden in water bottles. 11 people have been arrested as part of the operation. investigators estimate that the gang may have moved around 200 kilos of hash and 200 kilos of marijuana every month. during the raid, around 300 kilos of drugs were seized by police. the investigation began when

guardia Civil learned that a gang made up of Central european and north African individuals may have been smuggling drugs hidden in water thermoses. the gang would buy large amounts of drugs, which were transported in convoy, often accompanied by additional vehicles for security. they would then conceal the drugs inside the water flasks and hide them among legal shipments via a water bottle export company created for the

purpose. the gang was made up of managers, handlers, transport workers and those who were tasked with concealing the drugs.

14 raids were carried out on homes with officers seizing seven high end vehicles. two indoor plantations were discovered during raids and officers also seized a gun, bullet proof vest and a large amount of police tech which officers believe the gang may have used to rob other gangs.

Loggerhead turtle saved in Tabarca after being trapped in illegal fishing gear

guardia Civil in tabarca have rescued a loggerhead turtle trapped in an illegal fishing set up off the coast of the island. this species (Caretta caretta) is classified as a vulnerable species by the international union for Conservation of nature (iuCn) and is included in Appendix i of the Convention on international trade in endangered species (Cites). the animal was found hooked on a set of plastic bottles used most likely as a marker for illegal fishing gear. A vessel from the Maritime service that was carrying out surveillance operations in the vicinity of the island found the trapped turtle, which has since been transferred to the facilities of the Fundación oceanogràfic, in Valencia, for its recovery. the rescue took place on sunday, July 24 at around 4:30pm while officers of the Maritime service of the Alicante guardia Civil were providing a surveillance service in the vicinity of tabarca island, they spottedthe water bottles tied together, a system is frequently used to mark illegal fishing gear. on closer inspection, they saw that a turtle had one of its flippers caught in the string tying the bottles, preventing it from swimming properly or diving, and therefore from feeding. With great care, and holding her by the shell so as not to damage her limbs, the officers lifted her on the boat to release her from the ropes and bottles. she was later transferred to the oceanographic

centre in Valencia where experts will work on her recovery to make it possible for her return to her natural habitat.

As reported by the guardia Civil, maritime officers periodically receive specific training to learn how to act in these situations. they also explained that if a citizen comes across a turtle trapped in this way, the protocol indicates that no attempt should be made to release it in case this causes further injury. instead, citizens are required to call the emergency services on 112. if possible, the animalcan be transferred to the port, without overwhelming it, and trying to keep it hydrated. once there, specialists will take it to the recovery centre, where the entanglement will be removed, and the animal evaluated and treated for its correct recovery. the Caretta caretta, known as the loggerhead turtle, inhabits the Atlantic, Pacific and indian oceans, as well as the Mediterranean sea. international trade in this species is considered illegal.

Many human activities have had a negative impact on loggerhead turtle populations. debris in the sea, such as fishing gear, represents the greatest threat to loggerhead sea turtles. they often become entangled and trapped, sustaining injuries that can often be serious, or even lead to drowning. one of the main threats to the species is problems encountered while nesting, often caused by human interference. however, at 9:30 a.m. on tuesday

the 26th of July, guardia Civil received a call alerting that another loggerhead turtle had been sighted laying its eggs in the sand on a beach in guardamar del segura. seprona (the environmental wing of the guardia Civil) secured the area to prevent the turtle from being disturbed, and together with personnel from torrevieja City Council and the Red Cross made sure the animal was safe until the arrival of specialists from the university of Valencia and the oceanographic

Foundation. the turtle had laid 130 eggs which, following the action protocol, were carefully collected by the experts and transferred, one part to the oceanographic facilities, and the other part to a protected beach in Valencia, to guarantee that the greatest possible number of offspring are successfully hatched. After being evaluated by the Fundación oceànografic Veterinarian, given that her state of health was adequate, the mother turtle was

returned to the sea. specialists remarked that what happened in guardamar is an exception, since it is usual for spawning to occur during the night, and not as it happened in this case, in broad daylight. they were keen to point out that in the case a turtle nest is sighted on the beach, or a turtle laying eggs in the sand, the nest should never be touched, nor the adult specimen disturbed. 112 should be called immediately to alert the experts.

PM tells workers to stop wearing ties to save energy spanish Prime Minister Pedro sanchez has called on workers in the public and private sector to stop wearing ties, as an energy saving measure in the heat. Mr sanchez said his government will adopt “urgent” energy-saving measures as european countries strive to become less dependent on Russian gas in the wake of the war in ukraine. over the past few weeks europe has experienced record-high temperatures. on Friday, temperatures reached 36C in Madrid and 39C in seville.

At a news conference in Madrid, Mr sanchez pointed out that he wasn’t wearing a tie - and said he wanted his ministers, public officials, and workers in the private sector to do the same. “this means that we can all save energy,” he added. the prime minister said the move will ensure people stay cooler and therefore lower energy costs, because air conditioners will be used less often. spain is not the first to take this move. in 2011, Japan introduced its “super Cool Biz” campaign, which encouraged office workers to wear cooler clothes in summer.

And during sweltering temperatures in the uK recently, politicians were told they could ditch their suit jackets while in the house of Commons.

Mr sanchez’s government is working on an energy-saving decree, which is expected to be approved on Monday as Costa Blanca People goes to print.

it includes a move to encourage businesses to keep their doors closed where possible, to prevent air conditioning from escaping. A similar rule was introduced in France earlier this week. the measures are part of the european Commission’s €210bn plan to boost renewable energy and reduce european countries’ dependency on Russian gas following its invasion of ukraine. germany is following suit, with one of its cities, hanover, announcing that it would only offer cold showers in public pools and sports centres. extremely high temperatures over the past couple of weeks have led governments across the world to

reconsider their energy usage - from an environmental and cost saving perspective. heatwaves have become more frequent, more intense, and last longer because of human-induced climate change. the world has already warmed by about 1.1C since the industrial era began and temperatures will keep rising unless governments around the world make steep cuts to emissions.

As well as increasing energy costs, recent heatwaves have led to more than 500 deaths in spain over the past two weeks. the World health organisation said europe’s most recent heatwave has led to “needless deaths”.

Ryanair warns of more Spanish flight cancellations Brits hoping to jet off to spain should be prepared for more flight cancellations, Ryanair have warned. the airline is said to potentially be facing disruption until January 2023 due to spanish unions planning to strike periodically.

Currently some Ryanair workers in spain represented by the uso union are striking, with Madrid, Málaga, seville, Alicante, Valencia, Barcelona, girona santiago de Compostela, ibiza and Palma de Mallorca airports affected. however, the strikes are far from over. union leaders plan to strike on four days of every week until January to press demands for higher pay and better working conditions, a leader of the uso union said in a statement issued recently. the statement warned that the strike action will take place every single week from 8th August to 7th January - with strikes every Monday-thursday during

“As the company has been unable to listen to the workers, we have been forced to call new strike days,” said Lidia Aransanz, a leader for uso’s Ryanair section. “the unions are demanding 22 days of holiday and two extra months payment per year to comply with spanish legislation,” she added.

A statement by Ryanair said: “Ryanair has recently reached an agreement with the main spanish CCoo union on pay, rosters and allowances for its spanish cabin crew. Girl attacked by German Shepherd An 18-year-old irish girl was taken to hospital by ambulance after she was attacked by a german shepherd. the incident happened in an urbanisation in La Zenia around 7am, with the girl suffering bites to her neck back and ear as well as a numbers of scrapes and scratches.

Police identified the female owner of the dog, who is alleged to have two previous complaints filed against her by people bitten by her two dogs. officers are now making decisions as to whether the owner is capable of looking after and controlling the dogs. if not the dogs will be taken away.

Well now they are paying the price and

What is killing most ‘expat’ communities is this 90 day visiting rule and far more important to address than the licence issue. Yes the same argument still exists that many people have lived under the radar, illegally, for many years but they have contributed huge amounts of money via suma, Water, electricity and supporting local communities in shopping and entertainment.

surly it would be beneficial to all if the powers that be, get their heads together and come to some arrangement as to extending the time allowed to stay for ‘genuine’ home owners, not family but registered owners. the benefit will be dramatic and instant to all town halls, Businesses and communities throughout spain.

Police arrest fugitive who changed her face to avoid capture

Police in Barcelona have arrested a 34-year-old woman in sabadell (Barcelona) who had been on the run from prison since April 2020, after not returning from a temporary release permit. the search for the woman was especially difficult, because she had undergone various aesthetic operations to modify her appearance, she continually changed her identity and seemed to have a great ability to steal new documentation. the detainee had six current search and capture orders as well as an arrest warrant for fraud.

At the time of her arrest on July 25, the fugitive was carrying a

purse with the id and bank cards of another woman, who had reported the theft of the documentation five days earlier. the woman, who had been serving a sentence since August 2012 for various crimes of theft, fraud, forgery documents and usurpation of marital status, would have finished her sentence next August. however, on April 22, 2020, she did not return to Barcelona women’s penitentiary when released on temporary permit. the detainee was adept at stealing documentation and bank cards with the aim of usurping the identities of her victims, and

then requesting bank loans and fraudulently using the victims’ bank cards to get her hands on money. investigators located an address where the suspected the fugitive might be spending the night and organized a surveillance operation, which allowed them to pinpoint a woman with physical characteristics similar to those of the person they were investigating. the agents were later able to verify that she was the person they were looking for, at which point they arrested her. the detainee was sent back to jail where she will finish her original sentence and await trial for her string of new crimes.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Aside from the ongoing battle to become the next tory party leader, the newsflow has been pretty light in the uK over the past week. that is all about to change over the next 7 days, as the next Boe meeting should help to dictate the short-term direction for the pound. the Boe have raised uK interest rates five times now since the end of last year, with three of the nine-member committee voting for a higher rate rise, than what was the eventual 25bps move on each occasion, for the past two meetings. Boe governor, Andrew bailey, has stated that a 50bps hike is ‘on the table’going forward, as the Boe attempts to combat surging inflation.

As we have said recently, the decision for the Boe is a complex one. on the one hand, that surging inflation alone should prompt a bolder rate hike, given that the widespread higher prices are hurting the pockets of those who need it most. however, the higher interest rates then go, the cost of borrowing naturally accelerates, and the poorest will also be those who feel the pinch of each rate hikethe most. of course, the government themselves are paying nearly £20bn in interest rate charges on their debt each month, which will increase each time that the Boe hike, and for around a quarter of their debt, will also increase each time inflation rises. tough choices indeed.

Whilst the Boe might be a tough one to call, the pound has fared somewhat better. gBP/usd now sits comfortably above 1.2000, which is a direct impact of that weaker dollar, however, gBP/euR has also meandered back up towards 1.1950, which suggests more widespread sterling strength.

EURO the latest inflation in europe’s largest economy rose unexpectedly in July, driven by higher energy prices. german harmonised CPi (hiCP) increased by 8.4% (YoY), against an expectation of around 8.1%, from 8.2% in June. if you take out the harmonised* part, CPi actually fell slightly from 7.6% to 7.5% (YoY). however, given that Russia is now looking again at cutting the gas supplies through nord stream 1, inflation is likely to stay uncomfortably high in germany and throughout europe. that will not be the case according to the good people at the iFo institute, who suggested that ‘prices may continue rising, but the tempo will slow. that means inflation has reached its highest point and will go down in the course of the second half of the year’. that would be a welcome relief, if achieved. interestingly enough, the latest iFo Business Climate (Jul) which was released at the beginning of this week gave a rather downbeat look, with all components of the report missing estimates. next week is the turn of growth, with Q2 gdP set for release throughout the region. euro area gdP growth is expected to have dropped from 0.6% (Q1) to around 0.2% (Q2), but more importantly, should remain slightly in positive territory.

As for the single currency, much like the pound, the euro has fared better this week, against that positive sentiment backdrop. having had the much-publicised battle around parity over the previous couple of weeks, euR/ usd has spent this weekbetween 1.0100 and 1.0275. *Harmonised inflation ensures that each nation within the EZ use similar calculating metrics for their inflation data, to ensure consistency throughout the region.

Working from home is not all it’s cracked up to be it’s easy to come up with a long list of pros about working from home. You can save a fortune on petrol by avoiding the twice daily commute. You can better balance work and family life.

And, you can work in your PJs. Many companies also found that employee productivity was higher during the pandemic when they worked from home. however, a study by the neuroscience team at the university of Cambridge shows that working from home fulltime carries some risks as well. the primary risk of working from home, especially for single people, is isolation. And the lack of social interaction that many of us get at the office or in the field can impact the brain’s structure. the brain, argues the research team, is specifically evolved to support social interactions. And being part of a group increases satisfaction and well-being. the study mapped the brain regions of nearly 7,000 people, finding that the regions that are utilized during social interactions are strongly linked to those that support cognition, including the ones that help us focus; that assist with memory, emotion and motivation; and that help us regulate our emotions.

What researchers found was that social isolation could be an early indicator of people

who were at an increased risk of dementia. in fact, in a followup with the almost 500,000 participants 12 years after the initial study, those who were socially isolated had a 26% increased risk of the disorder. that sort of isolation, of course, was more than just working from home. But it points to the potential cognitive risks that come with avoiding the office entirely. gallup, conducted a less scientific, but nonetheless noteworthy survey of more than 15 million employees ten years ago that looked at, among other things, the importance of social interaction at work. the results found that people with a “work wife” or “work husband”someone they consider their best friend at the office - are “seven times as likely to be engaged in their jobs, are better at engaging customers, produce

higher quality work, [and] have higher well-being.”

Furthermore, a 2017 harvard Business Review study found that those who work remotely often feel less like a member of the team. A lack of close contact, the study found, is harmful to the formation of trust, connection and mutual purpose.

Another study found that younger workers don’t actually want to work from home. A national work-fromhome survey conducted by economists at three universities found that under 25% of people in generation Z (in this case, defined as workers in their 20s) would work remotely full-time if given the option (over 40% of the people aged 50 and above said they would). Linkedin found that 20- to 24-year-olds were the least likely to apply to remote roles in a study of job applications.

The councillor gave me a summary of the visit, informing me of the repairs that will be carried out in the coming months, at the same time they were informed that they are working on the drafting of a project that improves the accessibility of the urban environment and the installed services, in the municipal public domain and use.

Since last Monday, the municipal technical services have been preparing the necessary measurements to be able to carry out the technical report justifying the most immediate repairs and then, myself, together with the councillor, we will contact the residents to inform them of the work to be carried out and the approximate starting dates.

In addition, given the high demand for access by bicycle and pedestrian lanes, we are advancing a connection section for alternative routes between the Hospital of Torrevieja and the urban area of the city.

And, finally, regarding the improvement of the connection with Orihuela Costa, we have been calling on the Ministry of Transport to speed up the unbundling of the N332 to give continuity to the existing bike lane, which is interrupted at Los Balcones.

Exploding camping gas injures man

A man was injured on tuesday after a camping gas canister exploded in elche, according to sources from the emergency information and Coordination Center (CiCu).

A sAMu ambulance went to assist the injured man just after 8:45 p.m., when a call for medical help was loggedfor aguest at a campsite in elche.

After a sAMu unit arrived, the medical team attended to the wounded man, who had several first-degree burns.the man, about 45 years old, was transferred to the general university hospital of Alicante, which has a burns unit.

Man accused of acts of vandalism in a garage in Torrevieja

the Prosecutor’s office has provisionally requested a prison sentence of four and a half years for a man accused of a string of acts of vandalism in a private carpark in torrevieja. the Provincial Court of Alicante is hearing the case against the man the prosecution claims that the defendant broke the windows of several vehciles from which he took sunglasses and keys. he also broke the chain that was being used to secure a bicycle and fled with the bike from the garage.

21 vehicles for home health visits in Torrevieja

torrevieja health department has put out to tender for a sustainable mobility service. the winning company must make 21 hybrid vehicles available to the area, all of them new, for the transfer of health professionals to provide urgent and ordinary home care to patients. the contract is valued at 635,029 euros and will be valid for 36 months, thought it canextended for a period of one year. the main fleet of 11 vehicles, will be located at torrevieja hospital, while the other 10 will be distributed among the department’s health centres: guardamar, Rojales, torrevieja-Patricio Pérez, san Miguel, Pilar de la horadada , torrevieja-La Mata, torrevieja-La Loma, torreviejasan Luis, torrevieja-el Acequión and orihuela Costa. the brief for the project also states that activity within the health department has a dispersion of up to 30 kilometres, so it is estimated, in general, that the sum of scheduled and urgent visits on an ordinary day would not exceed 100 kilometres per day.

€100K fine for towns that do not sort rubbish before it reaches treatment plants the new state law on the treatment of solid waste, which came into force on June 30 after being approved in April, considers it a serious noncompliance offence if towns do not offer separate waste collection facilities in municipalities of over 5000 residents. Also considered a fineable non-compliance is exceeding the maximum percentages of improper waste (deposited in the wrong container). the fines that can be issued to the municipalities after a successful complaint range from between two thousand to one hundred thousand euros. until now, the Alicante province’s town halls have not fined citizens for breaching the rules, although fines are often issued for depositing rubbish in general bins during the day (it is only allowed at night). Carlos Arribas, spokesperson for ecologists in Action, points out that “we are going to be very attentive to see if the municipalities comply with the law and if not, we will denounce it.” the Ministry of ecological transition is currently undertaking the construction of two new landfills in Monóvar and

the expansion of those in el Campello, Alicante and Xixona. the figures from local landfills arequite telling: 80% of the citizens of Alicante do not separate their rubbish before putting it in the bin. the law establishes that waste must

be collected separately and cannot be mixed. in the case of hazardous waste, the hazardous substances or components that should be removed, before or during processing, in order for them to be safely treated. town halls must establish the separate collection of, at least, paper, metals, plastic and glass.

From June 30, bio-waste of domestic

origin in municipalities with more than five thousand inhabitants must be separated. smaller towns have until december 31, 2023to comply. it is understood that towns will promote separation and recycling at source through domestic or community composting. other items that will have to be disposed of correctly include textiles, cooking oil, household hazardous waste and bulky waste (furniture and fixtures) – all of which will have to be separated for treatment come december 31, 2024.

At the moment there are no municipal fines in Alicante, nor in most cities, for not separating rubbish. in the bidding phase of a the new street cleaning contract, Alicante City Council has requested a system whereby users who deposit rubbish in municipal bins can do so with a personal password. the system should allow, where appropriate, a set of tax incentives and rebates for taxpayers who comply with properly disposing of waste. once established, the digitised system designed for Alicante City Council can be rolled out to other towns as the software will be designed as open source and offered for reuse to other town halls.

Pay rise ends EasyJet strike All bodies are beach bodies easyJet flight crews have ended a strike after reaching a deal with management that raises wages by over a fifth, the uso trade union said. the union launched at the beginning of the month a series of nine strike days at the Barcelona, Malaga and Majorca airports to obtain raises and better working conditions. the strikes forced the lowcost British airline to cancel and delay flights at the beginning of the peak european summer vacation season. uso said that a staff assembly had approved the deal, which

will see flight crews get a 22 percent pay hike spread over three years, as well as special compensation for working on scheduled days off. Remaining strike days have been cancelled.

Unemployment continues to tumble spain’s unemployment rate fell in the second quarter of 2022, according to recent data, helped by a recovery in the tourism sector and labour market reforms. unemployment edged down to 12.48 percent in the period from April to June from 13.65 percent in the previous three-month period, national statistics institute ine said in a statement. the number of unemployed people fell by 255,000 in the second quarter to a total of 2.92 million, while employment rose by 383,300 people to 20.47 million, it added.

spain’s equality ministry has launched a creative summer campaign encouraging women of all shapes and sizes to hit the beach, with the slogan: “summer is ours too.” the colourful campaign’s promotional image features five women of different body types, ages and ethnicities enjoying a day in the sun. “summer is ours too,” it says. “enjoy it how, where and with whomever you want.” the campaign also features a woman who has had a mastectomy topless.

“All bodies are beach bodies,” ione Belarra, the leader of Podemos who serves as social rights minister in spain’s socialist-led coalition government, said. “All bodies are valid and we have the right to enjoy life as we are, without guilt or shame. summer is for everyone!”

Antonia Morillas, head of the spanish women’s institute and the organisation behind the initiative, said physical expectations affected women’s self-esteem and denied them their rights. “diverse bodies, free of gender stereotypes, occupying all spaces. summer also belongs to us. Free, equal and diverse,” she tweeted on Wednesday alongside an image from the campaign. the women’s institute said: “today we toast a summer for

all, without stereotypes and aesthetic violence against our bodies.”

When left-wing leader Cayo Lara said the campaign was absurd and trying to “create a problem where it doesn’t exist”, Podemos hit back in a tweet with: “if bodies bother you, you can stay home tweeting.”

And people online are absolutely loving the campaign. While the reaction to the campaign has been overwhelmingly positive, some have asked if there are going to be images that promote body inclusivity for men, too. even though it’s encouraging to see how spain is championing all women’s bodies, there is still a deeply rooted notion that people have to change their bodies in order to be “ready” for summer – and it stems from fatphobia.

Advertisers don’t always realise the impact that terms

like ‘summer body’ have on people who live in bodies that don’t fit the ‘societal norm.’ the entire notion of a “summer body” suggests that people need to change their bodies in order to be ready for the season, which can be triggering for anyone who has struggled with an eating disorder or compulsive exercise. so, how can we prepare for the summer if we aren’t body confident? experts recommend you cleanse your social media feed. instagram can be a powerful tool for body positivity and acceptance. stock up your follow list with accounts that make you feel empowered and accepted, along with the celebrities who inspire you to live authentically and unapologetically. And if there’s an account that’s making you feel bad about yourself? hit the ‘unfollow’ button and don’t look back.

Hidden meanings behind emojis Beware the aubergine emoji, it’s fraught with miscommunication potential.

A new survey suggests it’s best not to send a peach emoji to your boss, nor the aubergine one.

With 3,633 emojis in the unicode standard, there’s a lot of potential to communicate – and miscommunicate – with an emoji. Communication platform slack wanted to learn more about emoji communication around the world. so, in honour of World emoji day, they paired up with their customer duolingo to survey 9,400 hybrid workers in north America, Asia and europe.

What was abundantly clear from the results is that emojis aren’t merely nice-to-haves anymore. interestingly, indian, Chinese and American workers are most likely to find emoji-less texts or messages lacking, especially compared with global respondents (85%, 74% and 71% respectively, versus 58% globally). this number is only likely to increase as digital-native generations grow older. over two-thirds of survey respondents use emoji when messaging their friends (73%) and family (68%), but things get slightly more nuanced in the workplace.

Fifty-three percent of respondents usually include emojis when they message their colleagues, while 30% never do with their boss. 67% of respondents feel closer and more bonded in a conversation when messaging someone who understands the emoji that they’re using. so what are the most off-limits emoji to use at work? the ‘lips’ emoji is a big no-no, as is the tongue. needless to say, it’s never a good idea to send the

poop emoji to your boss, and never send the aubergine to a co worker (it’s a well known representer of the male appendage). not everyone agrees on what emojis mean. Around 58% of survey respondents say they’ve been unaware of specific emoji having multiple meanings.

Part of this is the generational divide. globally, younger generations were more likely to report that their recipient misunderstood an emoji that they’d sent (31% of gen Z and 24% of millennials). those surveyed were also more likely to send an emoji to someone their age or younger, while 28% of respondents don’t care about age when it comes to their emoji use. the survey revealed that the following emojis are particularly susceptible to misinterpretation: the ‘flying money’ emoji - does it mean a loss or an influx of money? the jury’s still out: 28% of respondents think ‘loss’ versus 31% who think ‘influx’. this varied by country, too. in Japan, 59% are more likely to associate it with a loss of money, compared with 7% who think it’s an influx. the peach - While a historically flirty emoji in some countries, the peach was interpreted literally by 71% of respondents in Korea, while only 9% saw its nsFW (‘not safe for work’) meaning. similarly, 56% of Chinese respondents think aubergine means the actual fruit. (the peach is a butt, if you were wondering) even smiling faces can be misinterpreted. the happy face emoji

was seen to represent ‘feeling happy’ (38%) and ‘general positivity’ (39%), but many people also use it to show ‘deep exasperation and/or distrust’ (14%). survey respondents in America and singapore had the highest ‘deep exasperation’ interpretation (20% and 19%), while Canada, Korea and Japan had the lowest (8%, 6% and 5%, respectively). one thing that is clear is that the same emoji can mean multiple things to multiple people, and their meanings can be more subtle and contextual than we think.

Improved communication When accepted as part of the language of work, emoji can go a long way toward increasing efficiency by replacing follow-up messages and reducing noise.

58% of global employees surveyed said that using emoji at work allows them to communicate more nuance with fewer words, and, perhaps as important, 54% think that emoji use can speed up workplace communication. this was even higher in the us: 69% of American respondents say emoji allow them more nuance, while 67% think it speeds up communication. over a third of French, Australian and german respondents (37%, 36% and 33%, respectively) agree that their company has its own ‘language’ of emoji for internal communication. notably, this sentiment was higher in Asia than europe, with 66% of indian and 60% of Chinese survey takers agreeing. other hidden meanings behind

emojis include: Goat - greatest of all time.

Snake - typically used to symbolize that someone is a “backstabber.”

Octopus -Cuddles Smiling Face With Horns - in the mood to have a sexual encounter with someone.

For the most recent seasons the pair took their travels to europe. At the end of one season, viewers even got to see the sweet moment when Barney gave his father an incredible gift for his 60th birthday, which led to Bradley shedding a few tears.

While the pair were in italy as part of their european road trip, Barney surprised his dad with an incredible gift. the duo turned up to singer Andrea Bocelli’s house to find him sitting behind

a piano, along with a violin player, before he treated them to a rendition of time to say goodbye. “You have a wonderful son,” Andrea commended, nodding to Barney. “thank you so much!” beamed proud dad Bradley.

After Andrea was done performing, tears were visible in Bradley’s eyes, as he gushed: “that was unbelievable.

Absolutely wonderful. so emotional. i can’t believe it. A true honour!”“i can’t believe that happened,” he said to Barney as they left.

drew Barrymore says Cameron diaz has spent years trying to teach her how to be more environmentally-friendly. the ‘Charlie’s Angels’ co-stars have been friends since the 1990s and drew has revealed she made a promise to eco warrior Cameron to embrace sustainable living and she tries to take on plenty of her pal’s useful green living tips. drew said: “i made a promise to my best friend, Cameron diaz, that i would become someone who she had been pushing me to be my whole life, which was environmentally aware, conscientious and living a certain lifestyle that was sustainable. she’s been saying this since the ‘90s to me. once i started living that way and really committing, saw the world differently and it made me put it all into practice and action.” the 47-year-old actress revealed she has made an effort to ditch plastic food storage bags, which she describes as her “favourite thing in the world,” and now also makes an effort to switch the water off when she’s brushing her teeth. she added: “Cameron would literally be like, ‘stop letting the water run while you’re brushing your teeth! don’t do that!’ And

she always felt like that big sister, leaning into me.”

Cameron is a long-time champion of environmental issues and previously explained how she tries to make a difference every day but just doing small things at home. in a published interview, she explained: “i just do as much as i can do, all the basics that everybody does ... be aware of my energy consumption, as far as all the lights in my house, how much power i use, how much i run the water, set my thermostat, my recycling, my

car - i drive a Prius - i’ve driven a Prius since they’ve been out.”

Cameron also tries to offset her carbon footprint as she has travelled so much for work over the years. she added: “i do my carbon offsetting for my travels because i travel so much.

My travel agent just basically tallies it as i go. i’m building my houses and stuff - i am trying to retrofit everything as much as possible and also other projects that i have going on i try to do it consciously, as green as possible. And i am just trying to help spread the word.”

Iconic Del Boy scene was never rehearsed

When any show has a strong fan-base, such as Only Fools and Horses, simply re-watching episodes is never enough for those who have an unparalleled love and admiration for the characters, the powerful storylines and the series’ creators. Even though Only Fools and Horses may have ended more than a decade ago, some fans will still be on the lookout to find fascinating hidden gems associated with the sitcom.

Recently, Secrets & Scandals of Only Fools And Horses provided fans with just that. The documentary - which aired on Channel 5 recently - revealed a very surprising behind-the-scenes secret from when Sir David Jason, who fronted Only Fools and Horses as Del Boy, was filming for the sitcom.

There are so many iconic scenes in the award-winning programme, but there was one David wanted to ad lib to

‘preserve the surprise’, according to an actor on the show. In the hilarious scene, broadcast in 1989, fans will remember Del talking to Trigger (played by Roger Lloyd Pack) trying to woo “modern Euro-birds” - before falling sideways through the bar.

Spotting two “sorts”, the star tells his hapless friend to: “Play it nice and cool, son, nice and cool you know what I mean?” before disappearing much to Trig’s surprise.

Speaking about the filming process, Jeff Stevenson, a warm-up and guest actor on the programme, revealed: “The rehearsal was in the afternoon, and I remember David doing it, and I remember Tony coming down and saying, ‘Right can we do that again?’

“I seem to remember David saying ‘No, we’re not going to do it again, we will do it tonight’ because he wanted to keep it fresh!”

Samoan-born Galetti trained as a chef in New Zealand and in 1999 made the move to London where she worked at Roux’s Michelin-starred restaurant Le Gavroche. She left Le Gavroche in 2015 and in 2017 opened her first restaurant Mere, in London, named after her mother.

Monica leaves MasterChef Monica Galetti has spoken about her decision to step back from judging on MasterChef: The Professionals saying she was “in tears over it”. In April the chef, 46, announced she would be taking a break from her role as a judge for the next series of the BBC One show, having been part of the judging panel for some 14 years.

She joined the initial line-up of Michel Roux Jr and Gregg Wallace, also appearing from 2014 with Marcus Wareing after Roux left.

Galetti, married to French-born sommelier David Galetti, said: “I freaked out at the thought of filming starting again because I didn’t have enough staff (at her restaurant Mere), I was already going three days a week without seeing my daughter and I had a very ill nephew.

Galetti felt she needed to split into four people and said: “I don’t have a poker face either, so you would have seen on screen how worried and distracted I was.”

The popular cooking series made the move from BBC Two to BBC One in 2020 and following the news of Galetti’s step

In March, at the beginning of the war in Ukraine, Grupo ASV employeesjoined the wave of global solidarity with a collection of basic goods in collaboration with the Friends of Ukraine Association. This Spanish company now wants to go a step further and is planning to offer free professional help throughout the world, given by Ukrainian psychologists for Ukrainian victims, regardless of the corner of the world in which they are currently living.

The objective, says Grupo ASV is “to heal the other wounds of the war; the emotional ones, the psychological ones.” Experts warn of the impact on mental health that armed conflicts can cause in those who have experienced them especially on the elderly and on children. Sometimes, trauma can stay with people who managed to

flee from violence for years after the conflict has ended. “It is precisely there where we want to focus our aid at this time, five months after the start of the war in Ukraine. In contributing with psychological and professional help to heal the emotional and mental wounds of a people who are suffering so much,” said Sonia Carricondo, Head of Communications and CSR at Grupo ASV. The comprehensive psychological support service is not only intended for people who have lost someone in the war, but also to help treat all of the consequences that this traumatic experience can cause. The aim of the initiative is to make it known to Ukrainian people who might need this support, to reach out to them through the media, social networks and Ukrainian charities and associations.

The real reason dinner in Spain is so late Spain isn’t as mellow about meal times as you might think. Anyone with Spanish friends will tell you that lunch must be at 2pm and that’s that.

For years, Spain been notorious for its super-late dinner time, often around 10pm but in high summer this can be even later. Late dinner is often coupled with taking a siesta in the midafternoon. This time is usually when most shops and businesses close for about two hours so employees can rest, although more and more businesses, especially in tourist areas and cities, are foregoing the traditional midday break.

However, new claims indicate that the reason behind these customs has nothing to do with a cool and laid-back culture. It actually has to do with some complicated history.

According to an article by Food & Wine magazine, Spaniards have been living in the incorrect time zone since World War II. Judging by geographical location, Spain is in the same area as other countries such as Portugal, Morocco, and the U.K., which all run on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT).

Spain, however, runs on Central European Time (CET), putting it one hour forward, thanks to former Spanish leader General Francisco Franco, who established the change in order to be more in sync with Nazi Germany.

Even after the war ended, clocks never changed back. Spanish meals, workdays, and even television programming were pushed one hour ahead, hence the later days.

Gas in Spain cheapest in Europe Spain’s gas market prices are now ‘significantly cheaper’ than elsewhere in Europe for the first time in history, partly driven by the country’s far lesser reliance on Russian supply, according to the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC).

Taking the Dutch TTF as a reference, the Spanish Organised Iberian Gas Market (MIBGAS) has typically featured higher prices, but these have been falling since October 2021.

Last year, the average MIBGAS cost for D+1 was €1.19 per megawatt per hour (MWh) higher than the Rotterdambased Title Transfer Facility (TTF) terminal.

This, which channels natural gas from a pocket in the North Sea and retails it wholesale across Europe, had been able to offer extremely low prices due to soaring demand in the aftermath of the Covid-19 pandemic, as the TTF’s national markets were seeing a rapidlyrecovering economy, the CNMC explains.

Things began to change in October, creating tension in global markets – including increasing unsettlement in relations between Russia and Ukraine, falling levels in European underground gas deposits, the entry of Russian gas being limited to amounts featured in long-term supply contracts, and delays

in authorisation and launching of the NordStream 2 pipeline.

In Spain, gas prices hit historic highs during the winter of 2021-2022 – at their peak, on 21st December, reaching €183 per MWh – due to uncertainty over the Russian supply and aggressive competition internationally from GNL. Prices in MIBGAS averaged €47 per MWh over 2021 as a whole, skewed by the post-October figures and putting them nearly €37 per MWh higher than the average for the year 2020, when they were calculated at €10.25 per MWh.

This price of €10.25 in 2020 was the lowest annual average in history, but households and industry felt the pressure when the following year brought an increase of over 300%.

Spain stopped importing gas from Algeria – via a pipeline interchange in Tarifa (Cádiz province) – on November 1 last year, and expanded the capacity of its Medgaz pipeline by 25%, the benefit of which works started to be felt in the early months of 2022.

Now, just over halfway into the year, Spain’s strategy has led to its per-MWh gas prices falling below those of the TTF for the first time since MIBGAS began operating the national gas market seven years ago.

During the last full calendar year, MIBGAS’ 68,793 gigawatts per hour (GWh) generated covered 18% of Spain’s national gas requirements – compared with the 11% it produced and traded in 2020.

Business volume went up by just under 73% year on year in 2021, consistent with MIBGAS’ upward growth trend that had been interrupted sharply with the onset of Covid.

Europe-wide, though, TTF has seen the greatest growth since the end of 2020, widening its leadership over other gas markets on the continent, whilst the UK’s NBP (National Balance Point) shrank for the sixth consecutive year as a consequence of the Brexit referendum and the country’s subsequent departure from the European Union, according to the CNMC.

In 2016, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced plans to roll clocks back to GMT in an effort to abolish siestas and set the Spanish workday to end at 6 p.m., as opposed to 8 p.m.

Despite public support, Spain’s decision to change time zones seems to have been put on the back burner.

One benefit of the time change is that summer days are gloriously later - sunset can be around 10 p.m. however, it can also mean darker winter mornings.

José Luis Casero, president of the National Commission for the Rationalization of Spanish Schedules, said in a recent interview, “if we changed time zones, the sun would rise one hour earlier and we’d wake up more naturally, meal times would be one hour earlier and we’d get an extra hour’s sleep.”

Three arrested for tarmac scam

Spanish police have arrested two men and a woman from Ireland for an alleged tarmac scam.

Guardia Civil are hunting for two others, including the ringleader, in a bid to bring them to justice. Both are from Ireland.

The gang targeted premises throughout Spain, including industrial estates and even schools.

A major investigation –Operation Ricadona – into a Limerick-based Traveller gang began in 2019 after a complaint was filed by a businessman from Picassent in Valencia who had been conned out of money.

Their modus operandi was very similar in each of the jobs, with one member of the group appearing in premises of a company posing as a representative of a construction company. He showed false documentation and then offered the same services to pave an area outside the client company at a price well-below the market value.

When the victims signed the contracts, work got underway in the following days. Around 10 people would turn up to carry out the tarmac laying with small cranes and tarmac resurfacing machinery.

Once the gang had vanished, the clients would realise the work was substandard but they had already paid over the money for the job. The money transferred to the gang went into a specifically-created account, before it was withdrawn from ATMs and taken out of the country.

As part of the Guardia Civil’s probe, they established that in just over a one-year period, the gang made €2,163,902.57.

Spanish airlines most punctual in Europe Two Spanish airlines were found to be ‘Europe’s most punctual’ in June, according to figures covering carriers across the continent – Iberia and Air Europa.

The monthly flight performance report conducted by consultation firm Cirium found that of the 13,196 connections operated by Iberia last month, a total of 81.34 percent reached their destination at exactly the scheduled time, or earlier.

Iberia, owned by IAG – which also covers British Airways – is Spain’s main State airline, and runs long-haul connections all over the world, as well as internal flights via its regional arm Air Nostrum.

Short-haul international carrier Air Europa, also Spanish, operated 5,176 flights in the month of June, of which 79.21 percent were on time or early.

This makes Iberia the most punctual airline in Europe for that month, and Air Europa the second-most punctual.

After the Spain-based top two, the third-most punctual airline in June was Norwegian Air Shuttle, with 72.8 percent of flights arriving on time or early. Scandinavia occupied much of the top of the ranking – Finnair was fourth, with 71.1 percent of flights on time, followed by Norwegian Air International (68.6 percent) in fifth place, and the Danish group SAS seventh (66.1 percent).

The average on-time rating for the 119,121 flights operated by all carriers in the top 10 in June was 69

percent meaning Spain’s two – as well as Norwegian Air Shuttle and Finnair – were well above the standard figure.

Iberia is the only Spanish airline to figure in the world’s top 10 most punctual – quite an achievement, given that it was up against élite global carriers backed by much greater capital and earning far higher profits.

Spain’s flagship operator was named fifth-most punctual on earth in June, in a ranking topped by the Japanese airline ANA. Back in March, anticipating a spike in summer demand, Iberia opted to increase its ground staff by between 5 percent and 10 percent above the number needed for its capacity.

Doing so was a strategy to help smooth the chaotic situations seen in European and US airports at the busiest time of year, and enable its flights to continue to arrive on schedule as much as possible.

Raise your steaks

It’s easier than you think to cook restaurant-quality steak at home. From knowing your cuts to the importance of correct seasoning, learn how to get the best out of the meat with these brilliant hacks.

Quality There’s usually a good offering of steaks at the supermarket nowadays, but if your local butcher is open, it’s great to support them and get a topquality steak too. Most butchers are passionate about meat and can advise on cuts, cooking times and provenance.

Try to buy local, grass-fed and organic if you can.

Don´t lose your marble Marbling (streaks of fat running through meat) depends on a number of factors including the cow breed, age and diet; the cut; and how long the meat has been aged. Breeds known for intricate marbling include Angus and Wagyu, while well-marbled cuts include flank and rib-eye. Marbling infuses flavour into meat as the fat melts during the cooking process. If you want to keep your meal lean, go for fillet.

Warm things up A cardinal rule when cooking steak is to always remove the meat from the refrigerator and allow it to come to room temperature before cooking.

This way, the muscle fibres won’t seize and toughen when added to a hot pan.

The steak will cook more evenly and

you’ll be able to achieve the desired temperature (the level of doneness) much more easily.

Correct cooking Pan-frying is the most common way to cook steak, followed by grilling and barbecuing (for those partial to a smoky aroma and charred lines). But certain cuts can be thinly sliced, flashfried and eaten in salads, sandwiches and stir-fries. Fillet can be eaten raw in carpaccio and steak tartare. Cheaper, tougher cuts, such as chuck and brisket, need to be braised or slow-cooked to break down the connective tissue and tenderise the meat.

Seasoning Generously salt the meat with salt flakes just before cooking. If you do it too early, the salt will start drawing out the moisture from the steak.

When you think you’ve seasoned it enough, get it straight in the pan – the coarse salt crystals will help create caramelisation on the surface. Season with finely ground black pepper before cooking but reserve coarsely ground peppercorns for after, otherwise they’ll burn. Finish with a light sprinkle of salt flakes just before serving to intensify the flavours.

Pan fry A thick-based frying pan, griddle or skillet is perfect for frying steaks. Heavy pans evenly distribute and retain more heat, and get really hot – enough to

char the meat. Cast iron is particularly good, as are non-stick pans. The pan should be so hot it starts to smoke a little before the meat is added. The heat sears the meat and helps render the fat.

Blue or well-done You’ll often hear chefs referring to the temperature of the steak. This means they’re talking about the level of doneness. The most commonly used terms are blue – for barely warm steak that will feel very spongy – and rare for dark red steak that still has red juice flowing. Medium-rare is when the steak is pink and juicy in the middle yet cooked throughout. Medium steak will be pale pink in the middle while welldone steak will only have a trace of the pink colour.

Keep your hands off Whether on the barbecue or in a pan, steak is best left alone. Don’t poke, prod or move it while it’s cooking until it’s ready to be flipped. You’ll know when to flip either by how long it’s been cooking or when it releases from the pan. If you move it and flip it often, you won’t get the lovely crust on the outside.

Check it OK To tell when a steak is cooked, try the OK test. Put the tips of your thumb and forefinger together in an OK sign then, with your other hand, press down on the fleshy part of the palm, just below the thumb. That’s how a rare steak should feel. Put your middle finger and

thumb together and do the same test to know how a medium-rare steak should feel when pressed. Repeat with your ring finger and thumb for a medium steak texture, and your little finger and

thumb to gauge a well-done steak.

Now you and the steak can take a rest before you enjoy the fruits of your labour.

A brand new service, Bathroom BFFS, is being launched as place to submit stories from long-lost bathroom friends in the hopes of reuniting you with the one that got away.

According to a survey of 2,000 Britons aged 18 – 45 by Dusk, a nightlife discovery and free drinks app, 59% of them have used a bar, pub, or nightclub bathroom to give or receive life and relationship advice from strangers.

On top of that, 18% said strangers had even helped them quit their jobs, one in five have ended relationships and a further one in five have started new relationships as a result of advice from a stranger they met in the loo.

Long term impact of lockdown drinking Heavy at-home drinking during lockdown may have set habits that will lead to rises in alcoholrelated deaths and illness, forecasters have warned.

A study, commissioned for the NHS, suggests even under the best-case scenario of people cutting back to pre-pandemic drinking levels, there could be 1,830 extra deaths within two decades.

At worst it could be 25,000, along with a million extra hospital admissions.

Experts say the findings are a wake-up call.

The warnings come from two separate modelling studies - one by the Institute of Alcohol Studies and another by University of Sheffield.

In both cases, researchers agree there could be a high toll of alcohol-related disease, premature deaths and hospital admissions, costing the NHS billions.

Although not everyone drank more during the pandemic, it seems that enough people drank more heavily for there to be a marked impact on the UK’s health. Surveys suggest, on average, light and moderate drinkers decreased their consumption. However, heavy drinkers drank even more than usual which is where the problem lies.

Colin Angus, who led the University of Sheffield study, said: “These figures highlight that the pandemic’s impact on our drinking behaviour is likely to cast a long shadow on our health, and paint a worrying picture at a time when NHS services are already under huge pressure due to treatment backlogs.”

The studies also highlight that the impacts are not evenly distributed across the population, with heavier drinkers and those in the most deprived areas - who already suffer the highest rates of alcohol harm - expected to be disproportionately affected.

Nicola Bates, from the Portman Group, the alcohol social responsibility body and marketing regulator, said: “Total alcohol consumption has gone down consistently over the past 10 years, and Britons now drink around 15% less alcohol than

they did 10 years ago.

“During the lockdowns the vast majority of people continued to drink moderately, and this research shows some lighter drinkers cut their consumption.

“However, there is a small minority who were already drinking at high harm levels when the lockdowns began, and evidence suggests some went on to drink more. The models presented in this research are stark, but they presume no interventions are made.

“This small minority of drinkers are the ones who need the most support with targeted action and a focused policy response.”

Dr Sadie Boniface, from the Institute of Alcohol Studies, said: “This research should act as a ‘wake-up call’ to take alcohol harm seriously as part of recovery planning from the pandemic.”

The two most common causes of tightness in the body are lack of movement and dehydration.

General tightness in the body is ultimately occurs as a result of the connective tissue (myofascia) becoming thick and dense instead of open and stretchy as it was when we were young. This web of collagen fibres relies on hydration and movement to keep it juicy and elastic.

Lack of movement is easily remedied, just move. We mean really move, roll around on the floor, swing your arms and legs, hang off furniture in the way your parents told you not to. Seriously, it works. After 20 minutes of unencumbered body movement will feel more flexible in the body than you have done in years.

When it comes to hydration your obvious and reasonable thoughts may be that you already drink plenty of water so you are probably well hydrated.

Of course, water consumption is essential, keep doing that.

But there are other factors that come into play, primarily what else is going into your body.

Some of the food and drink you consume on a regular basis may actively dehydrate you.

The main culprits are caffeine

from tea coffee and some fizzy drinks, sugar, processed and fast foods and of course alcohol.

Fresh raw fruit and vegetables have a naturally high water content so upping your intake will automatically increase your hydration. It’s not about total elimination of these foods it’s about finding a better balance.

There are a couple of hydration super heroes that we would recommend to anyone wanting to improve their hydration, you might want to add these to your next shopping list.

First up is coconut water, which remains an all time favourite fast track rehydration aid and ultimate natural sports drink.

Packed with potassium, essential minerals and electrolytes, there is little to rival this bounty of nature.

Next is cucumber, due to its

96% water content and mineral balance, a cucumber can produce similar hydration levels to twice the volume of water.

Torrevieja Hospital reintroduces guided visits to the delivery room for parents to be

The University Hospital of Torrevieja has restarted guided visits to delivery suites so that pregnant women and their partners can visit the room where they will give birth beforehand.

The guided tours are aimed at all pregnant women, and their partners, who are interested in meeting the health professionals who will look after them on the day they give birth, as well as the facilities in which they will be assisted. During the visits they can ask

questions and clarify any doubts they have before the labour and delivery, a scheme that greatly alleviates any anxiety and apprehension before the big day.

Torrevieja Hospital said that it is “committed to a humanized and totally individualized delivery. The team of professionals in the women’s care area carries out a comprehensive pregnancy control process, from the first ultrasound checks to delivery assistance.”

Women interested in participating in these visits should contact their midwife of their health centre and a health worker in charge of guiding couples can offer them the best date according to the availability of each family. The visits are included in the maternal education talks that are given every Wednesday, from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., in the hospital assembly hall.

The delivery team wants to offer personalized attention to the mother

and her family, fully respecting her birthing preferences and creating a welcoming and comfortable environment.

WHO declares Monkeypox a public health emergency Monkeypox is now a public health emergency, the World Health Organisation (WHO) has announced.

The designation will allow the agency to take further measures to help curb the spread of the virus.

Monkeypox is a virus that’s related to smallpox, but

it’s much milder. It seems to be largely spreading between men who have sex with men, and the majority of new cases are in Europe. Worldwide, there have been more than 16,000 confirmed cases of monkeypox in 74 countries.

Who Are the Better Drivers, Men or Women?

Probably since the first car took to the streets, driven perhaps by Fred Flintstone in his foot-powered motor, gender clichés related to the automotive industry have been with us. We have all, no doubt, heard such comments as “It had to be a woman”, “women don’t know how to drive”, “a woman at the wheel, constant danger”, and perhaps much worse, and even today, many women have to put up with such derogatory comments, and so the DGT has decided it only right to clarify a few facts about women drivers, the results of which may surprise you.

Why? Well, the reality actually differs considerably from the stereotype, a reality that can be supported by statistics, that, according to the wealth of data that the DGT has at its disposal, women are, in general, better drivers than men. Moreover, it is not necessary to summarise it in one piece of information, but rather in a series of percentages that they hope will help to change your perception.

Women are more cautious than men As recalled by the Deputy Director General of Training and Road Education of the DGT, María José Aparicio, of the 1,139 drivers killed in traffic incidents in 2019, only 10% were women. This data in itself would put an end to any cliché, but it has also revealed that only 5% of drivers who died with the presence of drugs or psychotropic drugs in their bodies were women.

Of course, there is a definitive fact that shows that women are more cautious when driving, and that is that the vast majority of drivers who lose the validity of their driving licence due to crimes

More women on the roads… but good data The percentages that we have seen take on greater weight in light of these statements by Aparicio at the presentation ceremony for the study ‘EllasConductenpor la Ciudad’ by the

Midas workshop chain, which aims to put an end to the clichés that surround women in driving time.

“Today in Spain there are 27 million registered drivers, of which 42% (11.34 million) are women. That is to say, we are very far from those 4.5 million drivers who circulated in our country 30 years ago, and yet, despite this, of the 1,139 drivers who died in 2019, 90% were men”, reported the deputy director of Traffic Training and Education of the DGT, showing that many times we talk about what we may not know.

Women respect the rules of the road more “Women are much more cautious than men and respect traffic regulations and speed limits more. Our behaviour is more respectful of the norm, something that is not only observed in the commission

of infractions”, Aparicio assured, also arguing that 45.5% of the deceased drivers analysed had the presence of drugs of abuse or psychotropic drugs in their body, and of them 95% were men.

“Similar results” can be obtained if you look at the profile of people who lose the validity of their driving licence, either after losing all the balance of points or through criminal proceedings after convictions for crimes against road safety. “Again, the presence of women in these cases is minimal”, she has pointed out.

“The city is the most common environment for women to drive, and this study gives us very valuable information about the habits, desires, fears and shortcomings of women in the face of the new mobility challenges. These training challenges have become necessary to ensure that, in the face of the sometimes drastic changes that we are experiencing, all drivers, men and women, feel safe in cities.

What the Number Plate Can Reveal Although there have been different variations, such as those that can be seen on older cars, currently the number plate of a car in Spain is formed of a series of 4 number, followed by 3 letters.

Each series, or, to put it another way, each number plate is unique, and is assigned to an individual vehicle.

It can reveal basic information, such as date of registration, pending administrative charges or validity of the ITV, among others, and it is crucial information if you want to buy a car, if it is abandoned on public roads, or if you have suffered an incident.

In addition to our personal identification, if we know where to look, the car’s licence plate tells us many other things. For example, the vehicle’s accident history; the homologated emissions of the engine; the expiration date of the ITV and whether the last review was positive or not; charges or any impediments to the transfer of the unit, which is important if we want to know if we can safely buy or sell it.

Also, in most countries there are public reports on each registered car available to anyone who pays the corresponding fees.

Therefore, the Traffic offices make two groups of reports available to citizens: free, normally reduced; or the specific and more detailed documentation, with prior payment of the established taxes.

Indeed, in Spain, the free report offers the basic information of the car: date of first registration in Spain, make and model and type of fuel used. The report also indicates if there is any incident that prevents a transfer of the vehicle or its drivability, but without further detail. If you need to know the details, you are

going to have to pay for the advanced report.

In short, the first, free report, includes basic car identification data, as well as all the technical information: power, fuel, maximum masses, ITV inspection history and Euro NCAP test results, among others. Meanwhile, the full, advanced report adds information on the disposition limitations that appear in the vehicle registry, which could affect a change of ownership.

Don’t worry though, the advanced report is not expensive. You can consult the current fees on the DGT’s website, but once you have paid you will have access to all the basic information, as well as the identification of the holder, municipality where it is domiciled, ITV history, mileage and loads, as well as technical data, Euro NCAP score and history of car repairs, if it has been carried out in workshops that use the digital maintenance book.

Therefore, the DGT recommends downloading the advanced report.

If it’s your own vehicle, the DGT offers, only for the owner or an authorised person, a document that lists the vehicles registered in the name of the interested party. It should be clarified that last year 898,872 copies were registered in Spain, 7% less compared to the 967,326 cars registered in 2020. Although, these figures are still far from the 1.3 million registered before the pandemic, in 2019.

So, how do we request the car report?

The simplest way is online, although you will need a digital certificate, electronic DNI or through the Cl@ve system, but with this, both the reduced report and any of the detailed ones can be requested. Therefore, it is enough to

identify yourself and enter the vehicle registration number. For detailed documents, the fee must be paid (it is common to all) and the query must be justified: purchase, data verification, certificate for other administrations, accident or abandonment on public roads, for example.

If your knowledge of the Spanish language is okay, then you can also use the 060 telephone service, where you can manage the three types of detailed report, but not the reduced one or the one called Vehicles in my name. Likewise, proof of identity and prepayment of the fee is required, and the report is sent by email as soon as possible. This practice is one of the most commonly used by the Spanish themselves.

Finally, you can also use the DGT application, MiDGT, with which you can carry your vehicle documentation and driving licence, and gives you access to the reduced and full report. The fee can also be paid in the app. However, to get your digital driving licence you must download the “app” and access it using your electronic certificate, cl@ve credentials or with your personal data and a password that will be sent via SMS to the registered mobile in your name.

This is quite a complicated procedure in all honesty, and has become a stumbling block for many people wanting to use the app.

All of the procedures related to licencing and vehicles can be access via the Electronic Headquarters of the DGT, providing you have the secure digital access credentials, at https://sede.dgt. gob.es/es/, where the ability to translate the pages into English is also available.

SUMMER RECIPES

Fresh salmon with Thai noodle salad

Ingredients 2 skinless salmon fillets 1 large orange , the juice and zest of half, the rest peeled and chopped 125g French beans , trimmed and halved 50g mange tout , shredded 75g frozen peas 75g vermicelli rice noodles 2 tsp red curry paste 1 tsp fish sauce 3 spring onions , finely chopped Half a pack basil or coriander, chopped Method STEP 1 Put a pan of water on to boil. Line a steamer with baking parchment, add the salmon fillets and scatter with a little of the orange zest. When the water is boiling, add the beans to the pan, put the salmon in the steamer on top and cook for 5 mins. Take the salmon off, and if it is cooked, set aside but add the peas and mange tout to the pan and cook for 1 min more, or if not quite cooked leave on top for the extra min. Drain the veg, but return the boiling water to the pan, add the noodles and leave to soak for 5 mins.

STEP 2 Put the curry paste and fish sauce in a salad bowl with the orange juice and a little of the remaining zest and the spring onions. Drain the noodles when they are ready and add to the salad bowl, toss well, then add the chopped

orange with the basil or coriander and the cooked vegetables. Tip in the juice from the fish, then toss well and serve in bowls with the salmon on top.

Tomato penne with avocado

Ingredients 100g wholemeal penne 1 tsp rapeseed oil 1 large onion, sliced, plus 1 tbsp finely chopped 1 orange pepper, deseeded and cut into chunks 2 garlic cloves, grated 2 tsp mild chilli powder 1 tsp ground coriander ½ tsp cumin seeds 400g can chopped tomatoes 196g can sweetcorn in water 1 tsp vegetable bouillon powder 1 avocado, stoned and chopped 1/2 lime, zest and juice handful coriander, chopped, plus extra to serve Method STEP 1 Cook the pasta in salted water for 1012 mins until al dente. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a medium pan. Add the sliced onion and pepper and fry, stirring frequently for 10 mins until golden. Stir in the garlic and spices, then tip in the tomatoes, half a can of water, the corn and bouillon.

Cover and simmer for 15 mins.

STEP 2 Meanwhile, toss the avocado with

the lime juice and zest, and the finely chopped onion.

STEP 3 Drain the penne and toss into the sauce with the coriander. Spoon the pasta into bowls, top with the avocado and scatter over the coriander leaves.

Bombay potato frittata

Ingredients 4 new potatoes , sliced into 5mm rounds 100g baby spinach , chopped 1 tbsp rapeseed oil 1 onion , halved and sliced 1 large garlic clove , finely grated ½ tsp ground coriander ½ tsp ground cumin ¼ tsp black mustard seeds ¼ tsp turmeric 3 tomatoes , roughly chopped 2 large eggs ½ green chilli , deseeded and finely chopped 1 small bunch of coriander , finely chopped 1 tbsp mango chutney 3 tbsp fat-free Greek yogurt Method STEP 1 Cook the potatoes in a pan of boiling water for 6 mins, or until tender. Drain and leave to steamdry. Meanwhile, put the spinach in a heatproof bowl with 1 tbsp water.

Cover and microwave for 3 mins on high, or until wilted.

STEP 2 Heat the rapeseed oil in a medium non-stick frying pan. Add the onion and cook over a medium heat for 10 mins until golden and sticky. Stir in the garlic, ground coriander, ground cumin, mustard seeds and turmeric, and cook for 1 min more. Add the tomatoes and wilted spinach and cook for another 3 mins, then add the potatoes.

STEP 3 Heat the grill to medium. Lightly beat the eggs with the chilli and most of the fresh coriander and pour over the potato mixture. Grill for 4-5 mins, or until golden and just set, with a very slight wobble in the middle.

STEP 4 Leave to cool, then slice into wedges.

Mix the mango chutney, yogurt and remaining fresh coriander together.

Serve with the frittata wedges.

A good day’s racing on July 17th for SAMM (Sailing Association Mar Menor) members, after the disappointment of having to cancel the previous six weeks events for a variety of reasons beyond their control.

With a wind speed of 8 10 knots a square course was set with the first leg upwind and the boats sailing clockwise leaving all marks to starboard for an Average Lap race.

By the start of race two the wind had increased to 10-12 knots, so the fleet could do more laps in the hours race, with the fastest two completing 8 laps and the slower pair 7 laps. John Down managed a capsize and a boom bump on the head just before the start but recovered and again all started within a few seconds of each other.

All had a good days racing, but two plus hours was enough due to the heat, especially the officials.

After applying the handicaps, the winners of the first race were Jack and Mark in Shoestring Uno and Robert and Kieth in Ginetta took the honours in the second. In the second race Sirocco beat the Laser Radial into third place by just 2 seconds, fantastically tight racing!

That off-season break didn’t last very long, did it?

In the time that it’s taken for England’s Lionesses to become immortal champions of Europe, the English football season is back underway.

Did we learn anything of use from Saturday’s traditional curtain raiser?

Of course, we didn’t. It’s still a glorified preseason friendly no matter how excited Liverpool fans will be after their win and no matter how much people are ready to write Erling Haaland off after a slightly ropey debut.

Haaland was bought in the belief that he was a footballing robot who could never miss. That assumption was proven wrong at the King Power after he missed several chances you’d expect him to pouch - especially that last-minute opportunity. But, Peppy G isn’t worried - and if we are all very, very honest with ourselves he knows a bit more about it all than we do.

Liverpool’s new big-money striker hit the ground running, just like every other Liverpool signing in recent memory. Darwin Nunez scored one

of King Klopp’s three, helping Sadio Mane be consigned to Anfield history.

The real stuff starts next week though - this was merely an appetizer.

Newcastle United seem to be stuck in a perpetual game of Brewster’s Millions as they have lots of money which they are struggling to spend.

The latest big-name target that they’ve failed to snaffle is Leicester’s James Maddison - the Foxes turned down a £40m bid for a player that they’d struggle to replace for the same amount of cash. When you look at it like that, you can see why they said no.

Lamps has got a very excited loan signing from Sporting - Ruben Vinagre is a left-back who is superkeen to learn from legends like Frank and Ashley Cole. It’s pretty obvious which one he should turn to on all matters left-back.

West Ham gave up on Armando Broja - now interesting Real Madrid, somehow - and settled in 7ft 10 Italian Gianluca Scamacca. Cue many a Peter Crouch reference as the season gets going.

Fulham did a couple of bits too - a right back and a winger and I really should have written down who they were. Fulham fans, feel free to berate me.

Back to things that might happen

- Brighton have stopped answering Man City’s calls on Marc Cucurella unless they WhatsApp an offer of £50m first.

City have also made it clear that they won’t be selling Bernardo Silva to Barcelona - I know, I know.

Man United are still hoping that a solution can be found to sign Frankie de Jong. I’ll give you a clue as to what it will end up being - they’ll pay the £17m that the midfielder is still owed in deferred wages by the world’s biggest financial joke of a club.

Abbey Anglers On Tuesday the 26th of July we visited the fabulous Embalse De Argos near to Carravaca De La Cruz in Murcia for two consecutive matches, one including the 5th round of the president’s cup.

I have said for a long time that this is probably one of the best reservoirs to fish in Spain and once again it did not disappoint.

Those that know this venue will be aware that fishing is around what is referred to as the match point with a sunny side and a dark side. Well on this occasion with temperatures in the high 30s it was extremely sunny and hot on both sides.

Winner on the first day and securing him the summer series was Richard King. Drawn on the cold side he fished

the method feeder with wafters for a credible 34.06kg.

In second place was Barry Smith, Barry used a combination of slow sinker and method feeder with maggots or pellets for 25.08kg from peg 2 on the sunny side.

In third place was yours truly Ian Brown. Drawn on peg 4 on the sunny side I mainly fished the slow sinker with a 6mm pellet for 20.22kg.

Rods N Reels The following day conditions were a little cooler with plenty of cloud cover.

It is usual for this venue to fish better on the second day and this was indeed the case.

You know you luck is in when casting out before the match to get your

distance correct and you hook a barbel in the mouth on a bare hook on the slow sinker. This was my experience and I constantly hooked fished on the slow sinker all day long with a 6mm pellet, along with a duck which dived for my pellet as it hit the water.

I lost in the region of maybe 20 carp during the match, most probably foul hooked but managed to land about 6 barbel and 36 carp to weigh 44.38kg from peg 3 on the sunny side.

In second place was the in form Barry Smith who mainly fished a small banjo type method feeder with maggots or pellets for 42.00kg from peg 8 on the cold side.

In third place was Nick Bastock who from peg 1 caught carp on the pole and method feeder for 23.10kg.

followed by Nick Bastock and a pack of others with one round remaining in November at Murcia.
