Armed Forces Day commemorated for the first time in Torrevieja

Members of the public of several nationalities gathered at the church in torrevieja’s Plaza de la Constitución this weekend to commemorate Armed Forces day. in attendance were many former servicemen and service women who wished to show their

support for those currently serving in the armed forces across the world, as well as honouring veterans and their families. this was the first time that the event, organised by Spain district north of the Royal British legion, was

held in torrevieja. For the last three years, the event had been held at the cathedral in orihuela but this year, a change of scenery was decided.

Present at the ceremony were British Vice Consul elizabeth Bell MBe along with the Chief of local police, Vicente Gutiérrez and Wing Cmdr Jon Millington from the nAto Project team in Albacete. Representing torrevieja town hall at the event were

Councillor for foreign residents, Gitte lund thomsen and Councillor for police and security, Federico Alarcon Martinez. the service, led by Fr Richard Seabrook, got underway as Standard Bearers representing the RBl, Guardia Civil, RnA, RMA, British and Spanish military veterans, entered the church accompanied by music from the RBl Continued on page 3

Following the Acts of Remembrance, read by Jack Kemp and nick Keen, the last Post and Reveille were played by Mark Benton. he was followed by Falklands veteran, Pipe Major Brian day, from the torrevieja Pipes and drums, who promenaded though the church as he regaled the congregation with the Scottish lament ‘hector the hero,’ written over 100 years ago in praise of Sir hector Macdonald. the service ended with the national Anthems of Spain and the united Kingdom and the blessing

torrevieja fire crews made a grisly discovery on tuesday last when they found the body of a 65 year old man. the man, believed to have been dead for several days, was discovered inside an apartment in the town centre. neighbours had noticed a strong smell and contacted authorities. At around 3 in the afternoon, local police and firefighters entered the apartment where they discovered the man had passed away. the cause of death has not yet been revealed.

Spanish town to issue fines for peeing in the sea in the north of Spain, the town of Vigo on the coast of Galicia is set to issue fines to bathers who urinate in the water or on the beach.

According to the local municipality, the practice of urinating in the sea is very common and may seem very harmless; especially when it is done in the water, but officials say it is a nuisance that threatens hygiene. So much so that the Vigo City Council has decided to penalize bathers with fines of up to 750 euros.

Since the town announced the fines for peeing, it has pledged to increase the number of public toilets near the beach. A few years ago, in the Region of Murcia; the municipality of San Pedro del Pinatar had implemented a similar ban on its shores. Spain has some very strict local laws around beaches, and San Pedro del Pinatar also prohibits urinating in the sea along with nudity, playing with bats and balls, and using a towel to reserve a spot.

Many local beach rules have been updated recently, with fines threatened for using soap or shampoo in the water, and smoking not allowed on several beaches. it is not yet clear how officials in Vigo plan to enforce the ‘no peeing’ ban.

Italy now has a ‘Torrevieja Square’ A new ‘piazza’ in italy has been named after torrevieja. the inauguration ceremony took place this weekend in the italian town of Faleria and was attended by the mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón.

Faleria is in the province of Viterbo near Rome and chose to honour torrevieja “as a symbol of the friendship that both cities have maintained for

more than twenty years.” eduardo dolón was welcomed by the mayor of Faleria, Walter Salvadori, as well as other invited dignitaries including the president of the province of Viterbo, Alexandro Romoli, the president of the national Association of italian Music Bands, Giampaolo lazzeri and representatives of different local groups.

the special friendship between Faleria and torrevieja came about through the close relationship that the Musical Society “Ciudad de torrevieja - los Salerosos” began to curate more than two decades ago with two musical groups from the italian town, the musical band “G. Verdi” and the international folk group “la Frústica”, both directed by the prestigious Falerian maestro, Sergio Belardi. there have been numerous occasions in which both bands have visited torrevieja, just as los Salerosos has traveled to italy. the ceremonial naming of the new ‘piazza’ was attended by a unit of the State Police on horseback, offering an impressive aspect to the unveiling of a plaque in the square by the mayors of Faleria and torrevieja, followed by a blessing by the parish priest of Faleria. in his speech, the Mayor spoke of the delays in inaugurating Plaza de

torrevieja due to covid, and recalled that back in 2014, torrevieja named a street for Faleria. he also invited both of Faleria’s town bands to attend the 20th international Festival of Music Bands that will take place from July 5 to 9 and assured them of torrevieja’s ‘maximum hospitality’.

Also in attendance representing torrevieja were deputy Mayor and Councillor for tourism Rosario Martínez , Councillors for Culture and Fiestas, José Antonio Quesada and Concha Sala along with the Reina de la Sal, Victoria Magoñ and several members of los Salerosos.

At the end of the ceremony, the bands played together as a demonstration of their shared love of music and the bonds on which the who cities’ friendship has been built. the event concluded with the national anthems of italy and Spain, and the anthem of the european union.

New measures to combat inflation A raft of new measures to soften the blow of price-led inflation has been announced following Spain’s latest Council of Ministers, at a cost of around €9.1 billion. President Pedro Sánchez explained that €5.5bn will be in direct spending, and €3.6bn in ‘reduction in State income’ through ‘tax reductions’.

As well as the alreadyannounced cut in value-added tax (iVA) on electricity bills to 5 percent - the second this year, after it was previously reduced from 21 percent to 10 percent - the government’s 20-cent discount at the pump per litre of petrol will continue until the end of the year, when it will be reviewed.

Many national service station chains have added an additional discount of up to five cents per litre – although fuel is still far more expensive than it has ever been, even with the rebates, these have proven very welcome now that prices have comfortably broken the €2 per litre barrier for the first time in history.

Also, before the end of the year, all employees, selfemployed persons and the unemployed will get a one-off cash benefit of €200 if their

Man dies in potato harvesting tragedy A 35-year-old man died after being trapped in a potato harvesting machine in orihuela. the man was

unconscious and a SAMu ambulance was sent to the scene and was confirmed dead upon their arrival.

Severe Guardia Civil shortage in Alicante province, claims union the Guardia Civil union (AuGC) in Alicante has claimed that there is a deficit of at least 600 Guardia Civil officers in the Alicante province and considers “very insufficient” the planned personnel reinforcement that will shortly take place when trainee Guardia Civil are assigned duties. these officers will be assigned work placements on July 1 and “of the 2,098 places covered throughout the national territory, only 75 have been allocated to the province of Alicante,” revealed a source at the AuGC. the AuGC indicates that this figure represents “little more than 3%”. in addition to considering it insufficient, the union specifies that it is a temporary reinforcement because “these trainee officers have come to learn and complete their training and not to perform the functions of fully qualified, professional Guardia Civil.” AuGC says that their training is as yet incomplete and within a year they will leave the Alicante province, leaving further staff shortages. the problem is made worse due to the fact that a third of Guardia Civil officers will enjoy their summer holidays, so despite the reinforcement offered by the placement of trainee officers, staffing “will be

drastically reduced at a time when there is quadruple the population, especially in coastal towns,” warns the AuGC. the AuGC demands that political authorities expand the supply of public employment in the coming years and that the Guardia Civil authorities “finally face a restructuring of units according to the 21st century in large operating centres, which favours the increase in staff to provide a quality service to the citizen and also allows a better reconciliation of work and family life of the agents, establishing fixed work shifts, which they currently lack, unlike other police forces.”

According unions, the lack of public employment that has been a constant issue in recent years has caused more officers to go into retirement than those who join active duty, meaning the different units that provide citizen security services and various specialties are “drastically reduced” in numbers. to add to this, the AuGC says that a huge number of personnel have to be assigned to bureaucratic work

and the fact that the General directorate of the Civil Guard is continually ordering the creation of new “ghost teams” to combat new criminal types. the union does consider that these groups are necessary but “they are created by removing personnel from the different units, instead of creating them by publishing vacancies...and establishing special independent units.” the situation, according to the AuGC, is becoming unsustainable in several barracks and putting “citizen safety at serious risk, as well as that of the agents themselves.”

Given the lack of personnel, the security of several areas is being covered “with just one patrol” and the officers often find themselves involved in risky situations “without being able to count on any support to carry out their duties.”

Armed gang arrested in Dolores national Police of Alicante has disbanded a highly organized gang, dedicated to committing robberies with force and violent assaults on homes using firearms across the Vega Baja.

Six people have been arrested in the operation, most of them in dolores, and the Police have seized a large number of tools used by the gang for their illicit activities, including a taser-type electrical device and five Molotov cocktail-type incendiary devices. those arrested, of them with military training from eastern european countries, were released with charges, two of them after appearing in police barracks to make a statement and the rest after appearing to court in orihuela. the detainees are of lithuanian, Bulgarian and Spanish nationality and are between 29 and 47 years old. the investigation was carried out by agents of the Specialized Crime unit of the Alicante Judicial Police Brigade with support and participation of agents from the narcotics unit. the investigations began after the Police learned of the release from prison of a Bulgarian citizen, a resident of Redován, with an extensive criminal record for robbery. investigators discovered that he was allegedly attempting to reorganize a criminal group and resume his activities, so discreet monitoring and surveillance devices were put in place. through the surveillance,

detectives managed to identify all the alleged members of the organization, they also located their homes and a warehouse that they used to store the tools and vehicles they used. during the investigation it was also discovered that the gang was involved in a frustrated assault with weapons on a chalet in Alicante, where they fled hastily after threatening the residents with guns. likewise, they are linked to the attempted robbery of a high-end vehicle in which they also used firearms and attacked a couple in San Miguel de Salinas. the investigation determined that the criminal gang was equipped to commit “serious criminal offenses against people” so a large operation was mounted to bring them to justice. officers of the national Police arrested four alleged members of the gang in the town of dolores when they were in the vicinity of the warehouse they used as a base

of operations. the warehouse was searched and a large number of tools and weapons were seized, including portable transmission equipment, six bulletproof vests, military helmets, a tasertype device, a compressed air gun, gloves and balaclavas, geolocation devices, large mallets, an industrial vacuum packaging machine, a money counting machine and other items. investigators also seized five homemade Molotov cocktail-type incendiary devices prepared for use. officers called in the tedAX specialists (technical Specialist in deactivation of explosive devices) so that the devices could be removed safely. the gang members were accused of belonging to a criminal organization, robbery with violence or intimidation, illegal possession of weapons and explosives, among other offences.

Younger generations don’t want phonecalls A survey commissioned by a uK company as found that the majority of office workers under 40 want to ‘ban’ the phonecall, and much prefer communicating by instant message instead. three quarters of younger office workers want to ban phonecalls in the workplace because they find having to speak on the phone ‘confrontational’ and ‘aggressive’ said the survey. three-quarters of people would rather communicate by email, whatsapp or social media than speak on the phone, which they claim to find stressful. the trend, said survey authors Freebets.com, is driven by Generation Z and millennial workers under 40 who prefer text messages and WhatsApp to actually speaking to each other.

More than three in four respondents (78 per cent) admitted to frequently ignoring calls when they did not recognise the caller’s number for fear it could lead to a confrontational conversation.

And one in ten admitted to going out of their way to avoid face- to-face conversations because they left them feeling on edge. tim Agnew, from freebets. com, which commissioned the

survey, said: ‘While younger office workers clearly prefer messaging to talking, we also found that across age groups there is a feeling that phone calls have the potential to quickly become confrontational.’ he added: ‘Many people are reflecting that by ignoring calls while at the same time being prepared to respond to email and social-media messages.’

According to the communications regulator ofcom, the total time spent on landline calls in 2018 was 44 billion minutes, down from more than 100 billion minutes six years earlier.

While calls from mobiles rose

over that period, they fell for the first time in 2017 by 1.7 per cent as people turned to other forms of online messaging. in a report that year, ofcom said falling call volumes were ‘symptomatic of a fundamental change in behaviour’ as people turned to messaging. however, the pandemic led to a rise in calls made from landlines –up 15 per cent in 2020 compared to the previous year – as friends and families unable to meet in person kept in touch by phone. the survey also found that nine in ten workers want the working week to be reduced to four days.

68th Habaneras competition nine choirs taking part in torrevieja’s annual habaneras coral competition have been announced. the groups come from Venezuela, latvia, Poland, Belarus, the Philippines, Madrid, Cantabria, Granollers and la Coruña. this is the 68th competition of its kind and every year it brings international interest as being a unique occasion. the event has been declared of official ‘international tourist interest’ and has been awarded the Cultural Merit Medal by the Generalitat Valenciana. the competition take place this year between the 17th and 23rd July and the 9 choirs have been selected from the many applicants from all over the world. over the course of the six days it is expected that torrevieja will host around hundreds of singers from all over the world as not only do the participating choirs visit, fans of the event also come to listen to the unique four part harmony singing.

Five of those taking part are from other countries with four Spanish choirs competing. this truly international event includes the singing in the traditional habaneras and polyphony styles, types of choral singing that come from Cuba. it dates back to the time when torrevieja had close trading arrangements with Cuba through its boats and ships. the local shopping centre ‘habaneras’ is named for this famous annual event. the international habaneras and Polyphony Contest of torrevieja, began on August 7, 1955 as the national habaneras Contest. that

first edition was celebrated in the Vista Alegre Promenade and has grown into the international event we know today. ‘habaneras’, the songs of the sea, are a traditional music genre in Spain dating back to the 19th century. At the time, hundreds travelled to the Spanish overseas colonies of Puerto Rico and Cuba. they then sailed to the West indies or the Americas to trade, bringing the music with them. once it reached Caribbean shores, it merged with local music of indigenous and African origin. ‘habaneras’ soon arrived back in Spain, via the Spanish lyric-dramatic genre, Zarzuela, but also via ‘pliegos de cordel’, a kind of newspaper pamphlet that was sold in many towns, often by blind people. once heard in the theatre, residents would themselves sing these songs in taverns, bars, and at home. topics varied but the vast majority of songs are about women, the sea, and the lives of fishermen. the choirs will each interpret several songs, one of which is compulsory for all of them: ‘Cantamar’. Choirs will sing three habaneras songs (including Cantamar) in acapella style – the choirs themselves have ‘free choice’ with the additional two songs, but they must be in Spanish. they will also sing four Polyphony songs, two of which are ‘free choice’ and two should be folk songs from the origin country of the choir.

First prize in the habaneras category is €12,000 with second and third prizes of €5000 and €2500 respectively. in the Polyphony category, prizes are €10,000, €4000 and €2000. there is also a special

public’s favourite prize of €2000 for the choir that receives the most votes from members of the public. Attendees will receive a voting slip along with their ticket of entry, which can be filled in while attending. there is also a special overall prize, awarded by the Alicante Provincial Government of €10,000.

usually, the famous habaneras competition takes place at the eras de la Sal, but this year that whole part of the town is undergoing construction work so this year, the event takes place at the Municipal theatre. Capacity is smaller so it is expected that tickets will be more difficult to get hold of.

tickets will be available from 17th July from the event’s website habaneras.org or from the ticket office on Plaza Miguel hernández from 11am to 1pm and from 7pm to 11pm. An event pass (abono) is priced at €36, an abono for retirees is €18 and a one show ticket is €6 (€3 for retirees).

Rent in the Alicante province rose by 18.6% in the last year Finding a property for long term let in good condition and at an affordable price is becoming an almost impossible mission in the Alicante province. the increase in demand since the end of lockdown has not been accompanied by an increase in the rate of new homes coming onto the market, which has resulted in a sharp rise in rents that, in addition, have surged even more in the last year due to inflation. experts describe the situation as ‘perfect storm’ in the market; conditions which have led to the average rental cost in the province soaring by up to 18.6% during the last year, according to figures provided by the Fotocasa property portal. even in the least expensive areas of the

province, average rental prices per square metre are already hovering at 8.73 euro or, in real terms, a three-bedroom apartment measuring 80 square metres commands a monthly payment of almost 700 euros per month. of course, there are notable differences between the different towns and even between neighbourhoods. in torrevieja, prices of some areas are over 10 euro per square metre and on orihuela Costa, rental prices per square metre in certain places along the coast are over 20 euro per square metre.

With these latest increases in rent, Alicante is in fourth place in Spain for rental increases, coming in behind huelva, where the increase is 30.4%; Segovia, with 10.7%; and

Cuenca, with 18.9%.

With regard to the rest of the Valencian Community, in the province of Valencia rents have increased by 13.5%; in Castellón they have risen 12.3%. the reason for this escalation in the rental market throughout Spain is the increase in demand and the reduction in available supply. thus, in the case of the province of Alicante, the volume of people looking for a home to rent has increased by 35% compared to 2019, while the number of apartments on offer has decreased by around 50%, according to Fotocasa. in addition to the supply issue is the direct impact of inflation, which has led many landlords to increase rents when contracts are renewed.

Land of Dreams photo expo A striking photographic exhibition was opened in torrevieja this week by the Councillor for tourism and deputy Mayor of torrevieja City Council, Rosario Martínez. Also present were the Councilor for Culture, Antonio Quesada; the director of CaixaBank Business in torrevieja, Clara lópezQuesada. the exhibition, entitled land of dreams features work by Cristina García Rodero reflecting the daily life of the inhabitants of Anantapur, in the state of Andhra Pradesh, one of the poorest areas of india, where the most marginal and vulnerable communities in the country live. the exhibition is funded by the Caixa Foundation, working under one of its objectives that “society can become closer to culture and knowledge.”

Among the cultural activities that it supports, the Caixa Foundation

organizes travelling exhibitions for cities and towns that do not have a fixed CaixaForum. this exhibition forms part of the Arte en la Calle programme, which aims to turn public spaces into open air museums, bringing the work of renowned artists on the international scene closer to members of the public. the Arte en la Calle programme began in 2006, and since then it has brought the creations of artists such as Auguste Rondín and henry Moore to the general public, as well as contemporary artists such as Manolo Valdés, igor Mitoraj or, more recently, the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado. the Caixa Foundation, together with the torrevieja City Council, presents the land of dreams exhibition. this exhibition is the fruit of the work carried out jointly by the “la Caixa” Foundation and the Vicente Ferrer Foundation in

india to substantially improve the living conditions of some the most vulnerable people on the planet.

Cristina García Rodero was invited to document the living conditions of the Anantapur communities. For a month and a half, García Rodero visited hospitals, shelters for female victims of abuse, workshops, schools and homes, capturing portraits that give a voice to those who are often forgotten: boys and girls, people with disabilities and, especially, women. Mothers, peasant women, seamstresses, brides, teachers, nurses and students have a prominent role in this project, representing one of the main drivers of the transformation of the Anantapur communities. the exhibition delves into the most sensitive and magical aspects of the feminine world and the strength and ability to overcome of the women of Anantapur. the photographer has approached each subject with reverential respect, having immersed herself in their world, experiencing both their joy and their suffering. the result of the project is 40 snapshots; images of the rural communities of india that captivate with their composition and vividness. the exhibition runs until July 20, 2022 on the Paseo Vistalegre in torrevieja.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP Given the volatility injected into markets from all of that central bank activity last week, it was perhaps no surprise that this week has been a much quieter affair. With only a splattering of keynote central bank announcements, and a thinner macro calendar, markets have had much slimmer pickings to motivate interest, and this has resulted in far tighter ranges to be had for most of the major currency pairs. Sterling has been no exception. on the data front, the latest uK inflationreport registered another jump in headline inflation, this time moving up from 9% to 9.1% (yoy/ May), with the monthly figure just beating estimates of 0.6%, at 0.7%. Whilst the general trend for inflation is clearly and frustratingly still moving higher, the mere fact that the latest headline number did not outstrip estimates, or thankfully get anywhere near the Boe’s dizzy 11% projections (just yet),helped the pound dodge a bullet on the day. the same could perhaps be said for the latest uK PMi readings, released a day later. Whilst there has been a large contraction in the PMis across the board recently, the key uK Services PMi (Jun) beat estimates and rose from 53 to 53.4. to complete the week, this morning’s Retail Sales have also beaten estimates, dropping by 0.5% (MoM/May), versus estimates of around -0.7%. the yearly decline came in at 4.7%, well ahead of the -5.7% expected. elsewhere, the latest dive into uK government debt is not one for the faint-hearted. Whilst public sector net borrowing may have declined in May, albeit less than expected (at £14bn), the government are currently paying a whopping £7.6bn a month in interest charges on all of the outstanding debt. Given that the Boe ‘only’ raised uK rates by 0.25% last week, i suspect that Andrew Bailey might be at the top of Rishi’s Christmas card list this year.

As we said at the top, the pound has remained constrained to a much tighter range. GBP/uSd has steadfastly refused to return to the sub1.2000’s again this week, maintaining a range

of 1.2200-1.2300 for the most part. GBP/euR has seen an even tighter range, keeping between 1.1572 and 1.1670. next week, uK growth (QoQ/ Q1) is the pick of the bunch for us.

EURO Regrettably, there were no more surprise meetings from the eCB to be had this week. What we did get was another direct confirmation from madame lagarde that the eCB will be raising euro area interest rates by 0.25% at next month’s eCB meeting. there will Knot be any more talk of 50bps then. that is a bit of a surprise to us, given that inflation in the region looks to be just as bad as about anywhere else, and even the likes of the SnB have raised rates by 50bps recently. of course, much of the reason for all of the frontloading by central banks on rates is with one eye on a potential slowdown, if not recession later this year, and you get the sense that the eCB could end up being late to the table once again. time will tell. the latest PMi readings don’t make particularly good reading for the region, with all components of the German report missing estimates, and by a fairly big margin too. the region-wide readings were similarly disappointing, with the global composite slipping to 51.9 (Jun/Prel) from 54.8, and well below guesstimates of around 54.

At the end of next week, we get the latest euro area hiCP inflation report. this may produce a ray of sunlight if the analysts have got their math correct, as a decline from 8.1% is widely expected. if correct, that would go some way to vindicating madame lagarde’s more cautious tone.

As for the single currency, much like the pound, there has been a modest recovery through the week. euR/uSd has been over 1.0500 for the most part, but 1.0600 is proving to be a tough nut to crack on the upside for now. euR/ChF is perhaps one exception, with the Swiss franc still reaping the benefits of that SnB rate hike, the pair has slipped back to levels last seen in March.

“Are dash cams legal to use in Spain?” to be clear, it´s not a traffic offence according to traffic law they are legal to use as long as they do not obstruct the driver´s view of the road, but it could be an offence under the data protection act, and if the camera makes unauthorised recordings of police officers, while on the job, that could endanger their own or a family member´s safety or the installations they are protecting or put the success of an operation at risk, also under the Citizen Safety law. the dash Cam recording could help prove who was at fault in a road traffic accident.

Without proof it is often one person’s word against the other. Without witnesses, police attendance or an incident that is clear cut, it sometimes leads to a frustrating outcome. the data protection laws in Spain prohibit the publication

of photos and video of other people, without their express consent. only the police and other emergency services are allowed to record images in public places. under the data protection law as it stands, an insurance company probably could not use the images directly, but they could possibly be presented to a judicial court. the installation of a dashCam in your vehicle is allowed but there are certain common-sense rules that must be considered to ensure safe driving. the placement of the device should not interfere with your ability to drive the vehicle. the device should not obstruct your field of vision from the vehicle.

Municipal Tourism Council meets the Municipal tourism Council, chaired by mayor of torrevieja eduardo dolón, met this week to discuss important current and future issues linked to the area’s tourism development. the mayor thanked all the councillors for their participation and contributions to improve the tourism sector, an essential part of torrevieja’s economy and culture.

Councillor for tourism, Rosario Martínez, to give a summary of the actions that are currently underway to adapt torrevieja as a tourist destination to new laws, as well an overview of the progress of the Smart tourism destination Master Plan and the tourism Sustainability Plan.

PRESENTATION OF THE INTELLIGENT TOURIST DESTINATION MASTER PLAN (DTI) Miguel Ángel Catalá, from the company Kalmas, presented the torrevieja Smart tourist destination Master Plan, revealing that it is already at an advanced level and that, soon, torrevieja will be included in the national dti network. the general proposals of the Smart tourist destination Plan are developed around

strategic axes of governance, sustainability, accessibility, connectivity, innovation and new technologies.

MUNICIPAL ACCESSIBILITY PLAN Rubén diego, representative of the company inFiniA, which has developed the project for the Municipal Plan for Accessibility of urban Space, presented plans to the tourism Council, revealing that the plan will be developed over the next 10 years, with a series of projects and aims including high priority (which

will be rolled out from 2022 to 2026), Medium (from 2027 to 2029), and low (from 2030 to 2032). the accessibility plan includes an assessment of the current state of access of urban spaces, urban transport, beaches and municipal buildings. Actions and a timeline will be drawn from the results of the assessment. the Municipal Council of tourism also covered with other topics of interest such as an update from the mayor, eduardo dolón, on the future renovation of the seafront.

Driving licence saga likely to end before August there have been many angry and exasperated reactions to the latest announcement from the British Ambassador to Spain, hugh elliott, who has announced that the ‘best estimate’ for British nationals living in Spain, who have so far been unable to exchange their driving licences for Spanish ones, is that they will be ‘back on the road around the end of July’. the announcement came after at least 18 months of negotiations and four extensions of the validity of uK licences granted by Spanish authorities, as well as many previous updates by the British embassy in Madrid. Since 1st May 2022, thousands of uK licence holders who have been resident in Spain for six months or more have been unable to drive with their uK licences, even though the vast majority of other eu nations have struck deals with the uK post-Brexit for the simple exchange of driving licences. it reportedly affects a ‘minority’ of the 407,000 uK nationals who are officially resident in Spain, as many managed to exchange their licence for a Spanish one before the deadline at the end of 2020, as advised. in a video posted on the embassy’s Facebook and twitter accounts, the ambassador stressed that the authorities ‘were continuing to work every day on this’ but said he was still ‘unable to give a precise date’ for when those with British driving licenses and resident in Spain would be able to drive again. ‘the good news,’ he said, ‘is that the

uK and Spain are now in agreement on the core issues that have been problematic and we’re now very close to finalising the actual text of the agreement.’ ‘once that’s happened, possibly as early as next week [now this week], there are various legal clearances, language checks and final political approvals that we and the Spanish need to go through,’ he added. ‘As this agreement will be in the form of an international treaty, certain procedures will also be necessary, such as approval

by Spain’s cabinet of ministers.’ the ambassador stressed that as the processes are not entirely in the uK’s hands, he could not make any promises about timescale, but he could give a ‘best estimate’.

‘We are looking at a date of having you back on the road around the end of July,’ he said. ‘Although this is only

weeks away i know it will feel like a very long time,’ he added, saying that the authorities are doing everything they can at every point to try to accelerate and advance matters as quickly as they can. the embassy continues to advise residents who are unable to drive in Spain to explore local support options such as charities although elliott did say, ‘if you find yourself truly vulnerable or know somebody who is, do contact your local consulate.’ the issue does not apply to British tourists with uK licences who are visiting Spain, and who are driving their own vehicles or renting a car during their holidays. the issue only affects uK licence holders who are residents in Spain. Visitors to Spain can continue to use their uK licence to drive in the country without the need for an international driving Permit.

Spain intends to further cut tax on electricity Spain is to make a second tax reduction on the tax paid on electricity in an attempt the curb rising prices. the president of the government of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, has announced the welcome news that the iVA paid on electricity will once again be dropped to counteract the considerable rise in energy prices. As part of his ‘shock plan’ to deal with the economic fallout of the war in ukraine, the tax will be dropped from 10 percent to 5 percent. he said: “Approximately a year ago we lowered VSt on electricity from 21% to 10% and we are now going to lower AVt from 10 percent to 5 percent.” this should reduce electricity bills even further. the first measures included the tax reduction to 10 percent, together with special tax on the energy lowered to the minimum of 0.5 percent and the suspension of the 7 percent tax on the ‘value of production of electric energy’ – all of which came into effect in december 2021. in May the government put into place a cap on the price of natural gas which unfortunately had little effect on electricity prices, mainly due to the unexpected heat wave. the president has already said that these tax cuts can’t continue indefinitely in response to the energy price crisis, but the government has once again extended the measures due to the financial squeeze being experienced by consumers as prices continue to soar, not just on electricity but fuel and food as well.

Petrol stations are already warning that prices at the pump will be more than 3 euros per litre this summer and politicians believe that the government’s plan to create a national Fund for the Sustainability System will push prices up immediately. the plan, which is due to be approved next week, will transfer the fixed cost for renewable energy to the gas, electricity and oil companies and opposition MP’s claim that this will increase the price of fuel by 10 cents as they believe the suppliers will simply transfer the cost to the consumer.

More Spanish cabin crew strikes Spain-based cabin crew at easyJet are planning to go on strike for nine days during July to demand higher pay from the budget airline, the country’s local union USO announced, adding further travel woes as the sector struggles to cope with rebounding demand.

As previously reported in the Costa Blanca People, Ryanair cabin crew workers in Spain also announced that they are to go on strike over six days at the end of June and start of July in a bid to improve pay and working conditions at the low-cost carrier, Workers at easyJet are planning to walk out in three phases, on 1-3 July, 15-17 July, and 29-31 July. The airline’s flight attendants in Spain are demanding a 40 percent increase in

their basic salaries. The basic salary, which excludes bonuses and extra pay, stands at 950 euros for easyJet’s Spanish staff, which is much lower than in countries such as France and Germany.

The union, which says it represents 80 percent of the 450 staff based in Spain, still hopes an agreement can be reached to avoid the strike during a meeting with management.

The news comes shortly after the lowcost carrier announced plans to cut more UK flights over the busy summer period.

The airline has blamed staff shortages in ground handling and at airports, as well as air traffic control delays for increased turnaround times, delayed flights and cancellations.

Sharp hike in property sales House sales and purchases went up by nearly a quarter in the first four months of 2022 based upon the same period the previous year, although April was far less buoyant than March, according to the latest National Statistics Institute (INE) figures.

This is likely to be because of natural caution on the part of buyers after the Eurozone interest rate was lifted for the first time in 11 years, returning to positive numbers after six years and two months below zero.

Despite this momentary shrinkage – about 20 percent fewer homes sold in April than in March – the INE reveals that pre-owned properties are continuing to sell well, with 26.3 percent more changing hands year on year in the first third of 2022. New builds from January to April inclusive were also up on the same period in 2021, with 11.5 percent more sales.

Overall, the year-on-year increase was 23.1 percent, even in light of the European Central Bank’s (BCE’s) announcement that it intended to raise the Euribor and cease buying debt bonds.

In total, and even with the rate rise, April saw 47,349 residential properties sold in Spain.

This is considerably higher than in the same month last year – 8,788 new builds (18.6 percent of the total) got new owners in April 2021, meaning the number of homes shifting has gone up by 3.4 percent in what was the 18th consecutive month of increases in sales.

And although the 38,561 pre-owned homes (81.4 percent of the total) sold in April this year was the lowest monthly figure since December 2021, it still represented growth of 14 percent on April 2021. For both types of property, the increase between April last year and the same month this year was 11.9 percent.

Anecdotal evidence suggests that a lean April is not uncommon, with potential buyers, particularly holiday home owners, tending to start their property searches in summer.

As yet, data are not available for May, meaning April 2022 is the most recent full month on record.

According to the INE, approximately seven in 10 residential properties sold in April – 69.7 percent, in fact – were bought by physical persons, rather than companies or large investors.

Euribor Homes bought outright in cash are not affected by the Euribor, or Eurozone interest rate, which is used for calculating mortgages in Spain.

These have been in freefall since 2011, and first dipped into negative figures in February 2016 – a scenario never seen before in the history of the common currency and which even led homeowners to question whether their banks would start refunding them, rather than the borrower paying interest on the capital owed.

This was never going to be the case, and lenders normally set their mortgage rates at the Euribor plus X

percent - typically between 1 percent and 3 percent - meaning they would always be charging more than purely the capital repayment.

But it proved a welcome breather for homeowners after the ‘boom years’, when the rate had been climbing constantly, breaking historic-high records, and peaking at around 5.6 percent in early 2008.

The BCE has been maintaining the below-zero rates, and continually dropping or freezing them, to help

stimulate monetary circulation in the common currency area during the latter years of the financial crisis and, more recently, during the pandemic; now, however, with price-led inflation across the continent, its strategy has reversed.

A year ago, the Euribor closed the month of June 2021 on -0.484 percent, and continued to fall until the start of 2022 – by the end of December, it was at its lowest-ever of -0.502 percent.

Even though it rose in January 2022,

the figure was still ‘within range’ – closing the month exactly the same as at the end of October 2021, on -0.477 percent.

Having only altered by hundredths of a percentage point month by month for the past six years, the upwards leap from January to February, from -0.477 percent to -0.335 percent, started to alarm homeowners with a mortgage and sparked a surge in fixed-rate loans, which have recently overtaken variable-rate loans for the first time.

Craft Market comes Spanish ‘Goonies’ galleon found to the Coast

Locals and tourists alike can enjoy a new summer craft market on the Cabo Roig strip, Orihuela Costa, which will run until 15th September. Ángel Luis Muñoz Grau, Councillor for Markets, has confirmed that with the regularisation of this craft market the sale of counterfeit items by ‘looky looky’ men is prohibited.

He said: “There will no longer be the illegal sale of goods that has been taking place in this area for years, causing problems of coexistence among the merchants in the area, in addition to the bad image that it gave to visitors. This regularisation is part of the line of action that the Department of Markets is going to carry out to

promote the markets and street markets of the municipal area and make them a benchmark throughout the Vega Baja.”

“Hippies Aguamarina” as the market has been named, is made up of 15 stalls and is now open from Monday to Sunday, between 7pm and midnight.

Muñoz Grau explained that “all the stalls, which are set up and taken down daily, and the merchants that sell on them meet the legal requirements for sale and that the law demands. This offers a guarantee to the consumer by delivering not only a purchase receipt and full consumer protection but a complaints channel through the Generalitat”.

A Spanish shipwreck which inspired the Steven Spielberg blockbuster film The Goonies, has been found off the coast of the USA – 329 years after it sank without trace, believed destroyed by fire.

The Santo Cristo de Burgos vanished in 1693 close to Astoria, Oregon, although the part of the world where it met its fate was not known about until less than 40 years ago. After the approximate location of where the sea swallowed the galleon up was worked out, the tale of its sticky ending would go on to become the cult movie The Goonies, releasedin 1985.

Anyone who saw this box-office hit will remember that it told of the adventures of a group of kids from Astoria seeking a sunken pirate ship loaded with treasure off their nearest beach.

In real life, neither the galleon nor the haul of gold and jewels on board were ever found – until earlier this week, according to a report in National Geographic. Remains of the boat turned up in a sea cave near Manzanita, Oregon, and were recovered in a highly-delicate, hazardous and emergency operation involving archaeologists, police, and search and rescue teams from various local and State organisations.

Washington State Department of Transport archaeologist and chairman of the Marina Archaeological Society (MAS), Scott Williams, said he was ‘impressed and relieved’ after the successful recovery of the Santo Cristo de Burgos – some 15 years after his team started hunting for it.

About a dozen wooden beams from the galleon, which was on its way from The Philippines to México when it vanished, are among the parts found in the underwater caves. At the time of its sinking, both these countries were Spanish colonies, and the ship was loaded up with a valuable cargo of Chinese silk, porcelain, and blocks of beeswax for making candles.

Described as a ‘Manila’ galleon, named after the Philippine capital, the Santo Cristo de Burgos was made from a type of extremely hard-wearing wood – tough enough to cope with the perilous conditions of the Pacific

Ocean crossing.

‘Manila’ ships made annual trips between The Philippines and México from 1565 to 1815, when international trade had just started to take off on planet earth.

Although wooden galleons would, of course, eventually be superseded by much stronger and safer versions, the fact that very few sunken ‘Manilas’ have been found following a 250year period of constant commercial voyages shows they were the result of a highly-sophisticated feat of technological engineering for the time.

Unmarked Motorcycles to Watch the Roads Within their resources for detecting road traffic offences, the Guardia Civil have used unmarked cars for many years. More recently, they have also included unmarked vans into their fleet, which offer a higher profile to watch over other vehicles. The next logical move, which the DGT is testing, is the introduction of unmarked motorbikes, which they hope will be particularly useful for keeping a watchful eye over other motorcyclists on the roads.

It is worth emphasising that the DGT is extremely concerned about the safety of all motorcyclists when they travel on the roads. To prevent incidents and mortality figures from continuing to rise, especially on weekends, the entity regulated by Pere Navarro is working on different strategies that allow offenders to be caught in the act. One of these new techniques is to use unmarked motorcycles among the public with the aim of curbing inappropriate behaviour.

It is key to mention that in 2021, 241 motorcyclists died due to road traffic incidents, according to data from the DGT. This number represents 16 percent less compared to 2020, therefore a step forward for road safety. It should be clarified that speeding and the consumption of alcohol and drugs are the risk factors that most influence a fatal incident with this type of vehicle.

As the DGT is looking for new ways to make surveillance more effective,

one of the latest systems it has tested has been traffic control through largedisplacement unmarked motorcycles with plainclothes officers. This approach, for the moment, has only been used in Galicia, specifically in Pontevedra, although, depending on the success, the state body could extend the use to the rest of the country.

When an officer observes an infraction, they overtake the offending vehicle and signal them to stop, at which point they put on a regulatory reflective vest, showing the offender the corresponding documentation.

If you ride a motorbike, it´s worth remembering that the same laws that apply to other vehicles on the road also apply to you. This includes the new removal of the margin of 20 km/h to overtake. Undoubtedly, the measure that has sparked the most controversy among users. But, if the vehicle in front is already traveling at the maximum speed allowed on the road, it will be forbidden to exceed that limit to overtake it. In case of doing so, the DGT fine will be 100 euro.

Similarly, the DGT also toughens the sanctions if we do not protect ourselves in conditions when riding our motorcycle. The penalty for not wearing the helmet or wearing it incorrectly (incorrectly placed, not fastened or wearing the wrong size) has increased from the loss of 3 to 4 points. In addition,

if we are caught with a radar detector, whether it is on or off, simple possession will be considered a serious infraction, for which we can lose 6 points and a 500 euro fine.

There is some good news specifically for motorcycle riders though, after many years asking for it, the new Road Safety Law will allow motorcyclists to use intercoms. Of course, they must be certified or approved, but be careful,

because they must be used only “for communication or navigation purposes, as long as they do not affect driving safety.” That means that they cannot be used for listening to music or radio shows, for example.

In conclusion, the owners of the two-wheeled specimens have many benefits on a day-to-day basis. For example, a lower cost per kilometre, quick and easy journeys, ease of parking

and the possibility of free movement in congested downtown areas. In the same way, our pocket appreciates the use of the motorcycle thanks to its better fuel efficiency on the road. But, the use of a motorcycle is subject to the same laws as other road users, an as a vulnerable user, it is important to provide yourself as much protection as possible by complying with the rules of the road.

La Nucía returns to the Middle Ages on 8, 9 and 10 July In the second weekend of July, the old town of La Nucía will be transformed for the 15th time into a bustling market from the middle ages. La Nucía is just over an hour away from Torrevieja

and, medieval market aside, it’s well worth a visit for a day out. Amata - the organizing association - has contracted several groups and artists to enliven the event with a medieval atmosphere including fencing and archery, dances, medieval characters, live music and craft demonstrations.

The square in front of the Town Hall and the streets behind it will be filled with stalls offering a wide variety of good quality arts and crafts: ceramics, shoes, bags and belts, designer jewelry, carved and turned wood, natural soaps and cosmetics, candles and much more. Some artisans demonstrate their skills at their stall and even invite you to participate, for example by making a clay bowl on the potter’s wheel. In the gastronomic corner you will find food stalls: cheeses and sausages made to traditional recipe, nuts, bread and

sweets, as well as a medieval tavern, an octopus stand, a creperie and an oriental tea tent with typical Arabic food.

To complete the medieval atmosphere, you might come face to face with troubadours, a storyteller, a belly dancer, stilt walkers, pages and other medieval characters in any street or corner of the market. There will be demonstrations and workshops on medieval fencing and archery, and the market ends every night with a fire show. For children there will be medieval table games, pottery workshops and a medieval merry-goround.

Town councilor Cristóbal Lloréns, has once again awarded the organization of the event to Amata (Association for the Improvement of Traditional and Contemporary Crafts), which, as

its name indicates, is dedicated to the promotion of crafts. They guarantee that all what you can see in the market is handmade by the participants themselves. Over the years Amata has found a pleasant balance between original art and craft work and lively entertainment.

The Market is set up in the oldest part of town, between the Town Hall and the old wash place of the village and opens on Friday 8, Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July from 6 pm until midnight (or later...). Belly busting booze We hate to break it to you, but the calories in booze do count.

According to Alcohol Aware the humble pint contains as many of them as a large slice of pepperoni pizza. But that doesn’t mean you have to quit booze completely if you want to lose weight. You just need to learn the difference between low-calorie alcohols and the stuff that goes straight to your beer belly.

Since the pubs have finally reopened things have got harder. Over the summer the sun is shining and the ‘fancy a pint?’ texts are in full flow. If you want to move forward in a health-conscious way, then you need a plan; an approach that gives you full control over what you’re drinking, without robbing you of any of the fun or spontaneity of the BBQ season.

The key is to be careful about what you’re drinking. Cocktails often have the highest level of calories because of the sugary goodness that make them taste so delicious – a Manhattan has around 160 calories per drink and a Cosmopolitan around 200 calories per drink.

Your favourite beer isn’t far behind either, with an average of 149 calories per pint. Don’t forget also that when we drink our blood sugar levels struggle to stay balanced so in addition to the booze you’ll probably want to devour something nasty on the way home. And

this is on top of the calories you consume for the same reason whilst hungover.

But fret ye not! You can still enjoy a drink (or six) without consuming the equivalent of 14 doughnuts. Here are some easy ways to enjoy yourself...

High alcohol/low sugar cocktails Not all cocktails are created equal. Many of the concoctions you get served up in bars are basically desserts, packed with sugars and calories. But with a bit of knowledge you can keep the calories down and the enjoyment level up.

Classics of the low-fat variety include: • Martini (vodka/gin, vermouth, lemon peel) • Negroni (Gin, vermouth, Campari, slice of orange) • Old Fashioned (Whiskey/ bourbon, Angosturan bitters, orange slice)

• Bloody Mary (Vodka, tomato juice, lemon juice, splashes of Worcestershire sauce and smoked Tabasco, celery stick) But to be honest, there are loads of great options. Vodka, soda and lemon for example, and even kombucha with vodka. Or you can try hard seltzers. Yes, the name ‘hard seltzer’ is quite an optimistic repositioning of ‘alcohol plus fizzy water’. But they’re among the lowest calorie alcoholic drinks you can find.

If you really want to get granular, you can lessen your calorie intake by choosing the right spirit brand. The less the alcohol percentage, the less calories appear in the drink, so a bottle of 80 proof vodka (40% alcohol) has 64 calories per 1oz, while a bottle of 100-proof (50%) arrives at 82 calories per 1oz. Whatever you choose though, just make sure you eat something first.

Foods that are surprisingly vegan Going vegan can be challenging. Obviously, fruits and vegetables are vegan, and meat and dairy products are not, but what about the others, especially snacks and packaged foods? It can be a minefield, but there are some that surprisingly contain no animal products or byproducts. Here are 8 foods you didn’t know are vegan.

Fritos Doritos and Cheetos contain cheese and are not vegan (except for the Spicy Sweet Chili Doritos variety). But the original variety of Fritos are absolutely vegan-friendly. Just avoid alternate Fritos flavours like chili cheese and flamin’ hot.

Lay’s Classic Potato Chips Lay’s has a lot of creative potato chip flavours, but almost all of them contain some type of dairy ingredients.

Bar-B-Que and Dill Pickle are two vegan-safe varieties, but when in doubt or short on options, just opt for the original Lay’s Classic.

Lindt Chocolate The Swiss chocolatier Lindt makes plenty of milk chocolate varieties, but vegans are in the clear if they opt for 70% dark chocolate or higher. (The same goes for many other brands) Plus, dark chocolate is healthier and contains more

antioxidants.

Oreos The manufacturer won’t officially list its Oreo cookies as vegan due to the extremely low risk of contact with dairy during manufacturing, but Oreos do not intentionally contain any animal products.

(However, this has only been true since 2014, when the whey protein ingredient was removed.)

Original Pringles It’s hard to find veganfriendly Pringles with the very notable exception of the Original Pringles. Most of the other varieties contain dairy, which makes sense because there are a lot of cheese-based Pringles flavours.

Packaged Pasta We’re not even going to list brands here, because almost

all dried pasta is vegan. Fresh pasta is made with eggs, but that’s not the case with the dried version. Double-check the list of ingredients for eggs to be sure—especially for chilled and frozen varieties.

Ritz Crackers The same manufacturer that has vegan’s backs with Oreos, but they also offer another popular vegan snack option.

Despite being categorised as “butter crackers,” Ritz Crackers are butter-free and egg-free, making them the perfect partner for your vegan cheese or peanut butter snacks.

Skittles Once upon a time, Skittles did contain gelatin, but it was removed about a decade ago in favour of plant-based ingredients. Now vegans can taste the rainbow along with everyone else.

Fibre reduces absorbed Vitamin deficiency cholesterol dementia link A lot of people have high cholesterol, which can carry with it a number of health issues. It is often caused by eating fatty food or being overweight, and occurs when you have too much of a fatty substance called cholesterol in your blood. Experts believe that high cholesterol could be caused by things we can control like lifestyle habits, or things we can’t like age and family history.

Keeping on top of the things you can control with simple changes can help to lower your risk of heart and circulatory disease.

Fibre is a type of carbohydrate and comes from plants. Unlike other carbohydrates (sugar and starch), it is not digested and absorbed in the small intestines.

Instead, it passes undigested into the large bowel where it’s completely or partially broken down by the bacteria that naturally live there. Fibre may also be a marker for an overall healthy diet.

If your diet contains a lot of fibre, it’s likely that you’re eating lots of plant foods which contain other important nutrients for heart health, such as vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and plant compounds.

Experts suggest people gradually build up how much fibre you eat, as eating too much too soon may make you feel

uncomfortable. It is also a good idea to drink more water when you start eating more fibre.

Eating high-fibre food can also help to lower your cholesterol as fibre helps reduce the amount of cholesterol that is absorbed into the bloodstream from your intestine.

People should make sure you get at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day as these contain fibre along with other nutrients. Eat plenty of other high fibre foods like pulses (such as lentils, beans and chickpeas), oats and seeds.

The Mayo Clinic says: “Soluble fibre can reduce the absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream. Five to 10 grams or more of soluble fibre a day

decreases your LDL cholesterol.

One serving of a breakfast cereal with oatmeal or oat bran provides 3 to 4 grams of fibre which can help you to feel full, which helps prevent overeating.

This can help you maintain a healthy weight, which is good for blood pressure, blood sugar control and cholesterol management.

Some types of fibre provide food for ‘friendly’ gut bacteria. This encourages the bacteria to thrive and produce substances which are thought to be protective for heart health.

These can have a number of benefits such as helping to lower cholesterol. The recommended amount of fibre is 30g a day for adults.

The risk of cognitive deterioration rises considerably with the years, but dementia doesn’t solely affect people of old age. There are tens of thousands of people with young-onset dementia, who are also afflicted by life-altering symptoms. One thing both populations have in common is the presence of toxic proteins in their brain. According to new research, sustaining healthy levels of vitamin D could help protect the brain against unnecessary damage.

The findings of the new study, led by the University of Australia, point to the importance of maintaining healthy levels of vitamin D to protect the brain against cognitive decline.

The research adds to a growing body of research highlighting the link between dementia and a lack of vitamin D. Investigating the association between vitamin D, neuroimaging features and the risk of dementia and stroke, the study made several key discoveries.

Scientists found that low levels of vitamin D were linked to lower brain volumes and an increased risk of dementia and stroke.

Genetic analyses supported the causal effects of vitamin D

deficiency and dementia.

In some populations, as much as 17 percent of dementia cases could be prevented by increasing vitamin D levels to the normal range in the general population.

Most of the body’s organs clear out waste with the help of the lymphatic system, but the brain uses a different plumbing system.

Cerebrospinal fluid relies on the pulsing of the arteries to actively wash through the brain, collecting junk - a mechanism known as the glymphatic system. When this system falters, superfluous proteins collect between the organ’s neurons, thwarting communication between cells. Vitamin D, thanks to its neuroprotective qualities, is believed to shield brain cells against such damage.

The nutrient is also widely thought of as a neurosteroid that is involved in the regulation of genes critical for brain function.

Senior investigation and Director of UniSA’s Australian Centre for Precision Health, Precision Health, Professor Elina Hyppönen, said the findings

highlight the pressing need to tackle vitamin D deficiency in the wider population.

She said: “Vitamin D is a hormone precursor that is increasingly recognised for widespread effects including on brain health, but until now it has been very difficult to examine what would happen if we were able to prevent vitamin D deficiency.

“Our study is the first to examine the effect of very low levels of vitamin D on the risks of dementia and stroke using robust genetic analyses among a large population.”

Surgery to make back pain go away

Back pain is a condition that can impact our day-to-day life, especially if it becomes chronic and disabling.

What is back pain?

Back pain is that which occurs in the back of the torso, from the occiput to the sacrum.

Back pain can impact areas where nerve systems correspond to the roots or spinal nerves (lumbociatalgia, cervico-brachialgia).

Depending on its duration, back pain is acute (less than 6 weeks), subacute (between 6 weeks and 3 months), chronic (lasts more than 3 months) or recurrent (if successive acute episodes occur, separated by symptom-free periods, of up to 3 months duration).

The problem would be considered to have become chronic when the patient suffers more than three repeat episodes a year.

What are the symptoms of back pain?

Back pain can be: • Mechanical: it sharpens with movement and decreases or subsides when at rest.

• Inflammatory: does not subside at rest and even reappears or worsens with night rest.

• Neuropathic: pain in the area of injured nerves, which can be described as a sharp tingling with rubbing, and which can radiate to the extremities, with alternating pain sensations.

As explained by Doctors Ana Victoria

Martínez and Rosa Mª Sanchís, from the Quirónsalud Alicante Integral Traumatology Unit, most of the patients who arrive at the consultation do so due to discomfort, of greater or lesser intensity, in the dorsal or lumbar area, usually associated with strain or bad posture maintained over time. Of all of them, 70% are suffering lower back pain.

“The problem, generally, is an overload in the muscles of the dorsolumbar and abdominal trunk that, maintained for a prolonged period, which causes discopathies, instabilities and facet osteoarthritis,” they explain. “The most common symptoms described by the patient are discomfort in the lower back, accompanied by pain referred to the buttocks and back of the thigh, and pain radiating to the entire lower limb.”

A visit to the doctor is recommended to control pain or inflammation, although many episodes are brief and limited, and are not serious. In this case, rest, painkillers or anti-inflammatories may be enough.

However, explained the doctors of Quirónsalud Alicante, there are signs that can alert medics to the severity of the disorder. These signs are strength and tenderness disorders, fever, non-postural night pain, or persistence of pain over time.

“The basic test for the diagnosis of a serious back pathology or one requiring surgery is radiology. Thanks to this, we can locate the exact point of pain, on the one hand, and rule out underlying

pathologies, on the other. And, we cannot forget that sometimes, low back pain can be a symptom of another more serious condition, such as infections, tumours, metastases or gynaecological, urological or abdominal disorders. “ The difference, according to Drs. Martínez and Sanchís, is that in the latter instance, the pain is not mechanical, in that “it is not related to posture, efforts or standing.”

Specialists of the orthopaedic and spine units can perform an MRI on the patient and “rely on other diagnostic tests such as CT and bone scintigraphy”. Thanks to this, it is possible to determine what pathology the patient suffers and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

What are the main back pathologies that require surgery?

The main pathologies of the back are: • Discopathy • Herniated discs • Instabilities • Spondylarthrosis According to Dr. Juan Antonio Lozano, head of the Spine Unit of Quirónalud Torrevieja, surgery can be recommended to treat both disc pathology manifested by discogenic pain, and lumbar degenerative pathology with involvement of various structures of the vertebral segment (disc, ligament and bone).

Regarding the approach, it is usually determined by the type of pathology and its severity.

“In case of lumbar disc pathologies without instrumentation, we perform a mini-invasive approach, with a minimum incision, of 3-4 cm,” explained Dr. Lozano.

“The endoscopic approach, on the other hand, is indicated in lumbar and degenerative foraminal disc pathology without instrumentation and is also little invasive, since the surgery is performed with an incision of 2 cm.”

In case it is necessary to locate implants or perform a vertebral fusion, the specialists of Quirónsalud Torrevieja use “percutaneous lumbar instrumentation techniques and surgery with fixation and lumbar arthrodesis, with small incisions of about 2 cm”.

The technique known as lumbar interspinous dynamic fixation is indicated in degenerative pathology in patients of high age or with increased surgical risk. Its advantages are many, since it “reduces surgical time and postoperative recovery, by not performing an instrumented pedicle fusion”.

Postoperative after back surgery The postoperative period of back surgery depends on the pathology, the surgical technique, and the anatomical region where the surgical procedure has been done.

“In general, anterior cervical pathology has a rapid recovery with little postoperative pain. The hospital stay is about two days,” explains Dr. Lozano.

“Cases of mini-invasive or endoscopic surgery stand out for their rapid functional recovery, with one-

day hospital stays. Regarding the techniques of Interspinous Dynamic Fixation in degenerative pathology, they are also well tolerated by most patients, with rapid functional recovery, little pain and hospital stays of about two days”.

The head of the Spine Unit of Quirónsalud Torrevieja, Juan Antonio Lozano, also highlights the importance of preventing back ailments by maintaining a good dorsolumbar and abdominal musculature that helps the spine to transmit loads from our body.

Controlling excess body weight, carefully performing movements such as lifting, pulling, or pushing, in addition to avoiding tobacco, are actions that also contribute to avoiding back pain.

Point Losing Offences The new Traffic and Road Safety Law approved this year imposes more severe punishments for certain behaviours that are considered to have a greater risk for road safety and increases the points that can be deducted from us for committing infractions such as carrying the mobile in hand while driving, not using the seat belt, helmet or child restraint system, and throwing objects that can cause fires onto the road.

Since 2006, the year in which the points system came into operation in Spain, each driver starts with 12 credits, which are subtracted as they commit infractions. Novice drivers and those who obtain a new licence after it has been withdrawn start with 8 points. In addition, if no offences are committed in three years, two more are added to the initial points.

And in another 3 years without being sanctioned, another point is added, up to a maximum of 15.

If you want to keep all your points, it is worth knowing what the infractions are for which the DGT can take them

away from you and the fines you will have to pay if you commit any.

Serious or very serious offences Points are lost for committing a serious or very serious infraction. They can take from 2 to 6 points, depending on the severity of the offence. Since the point permit began to operate, the offences that have caused drivers to lose the most credits are speeding, not wearing a seat belt, the use of a mobile phone while driving and the consumption of alcohol and drugs.

As a general rule, you cannot lose more than 8 points in a day, but there are exceptions, in the case of very serious infractions, which can leave you with zero in a single day.

Infractions that subtract 6 points The most serious offences are punished with the withdrawal of 6 points and fines ranging between 200 euro and 6,000 euro. Thirty two members and guests competed for the second of the Society’s ‘Majors’ of the year, our Claret Jug. Blue skies and a welcome breeze which developed in the early afternoon, made for almost perfect conditions for golf. The generally good scores reflected this.

The fairways and greens were as usual, in generally good condition.

The tradition of returning to the Lo Crispin Tavern was maintained, where the day’s prizes were distributed and welcome Tapas served.

As we were playing for the Claret Jug, there were no divisional prizes.

How many more weekends need to pass before we are all wishing proper football was back? The weather was not too hot in fact it started to rain at one point and fishing was at least bearable.

Winner on the day was Nick Bastock. Drawn on peg 28 he fished across with pellets up in the water for a great weight of 40.66kg made up of small carp and mullet.

In second place and continuing his great run of form was Richard King.

Drawn on peg 5 he fished the method feeder with wafter for 33.06kg of mainly carp.

Third place was taken by another old master Bill Reade. Bill used some very large maggots, larger than wasp grub that he had found in his keepnet, he has no idea from what they were from but he used them very effectively for 26.620kg.

The pairs match was surprisingly a close-run affair but the narrow winners were Nick Bastock and Alan Hill with 51.12kg. Other section winners were Lenny Bolton with 17.02kg and Barry Smith with7.24kg.

Rods N reels The following day we revisited the complex and 12 anglers took part so we fished 3 sections of 4.

The winner was once again Nick Bastock. This time he was drawn on peg 5 and he took advantage of the good draw to weigh 34.92kg. This time he fished maggot on the pole.

In second place was Mr Pastry himself, Terry Brindley. He fished his usual dirty great lump of paste about a metre off the far bang to catch decent carp and mullet for 32.26kg.

In third place was myself, Ian Brown.
