A new party for the Coast the Founders of Partido independencia orihuela Costa (P.i.o.C) are in the process of registering the organisation as a new political party for the residents of orihuela Costa. this means that residents of the Coast will very soon have a choice who to vote for in the May 2023 elections

to represent them, with a choice of candidates that live on the coast. this team will campaign for the rights of equality, a fair share of the budget, improved services, infrastructure and better integration for the multicultural nationalities who make up the community of orihuela Costa.

P.i.o.C is keen to give local residents the opportunity to contest the elections in May 2023 as a united community, believing that Councillors from orihuela Costa should represent orihuela Costa. therefore, P.i.o.C is offering the opportunity to all associations of orihuela Costa and C.L.a.r.o to participate and form a unique candidate list for orihuela Costa to contest the next elections. a spokesman said: “We believe that if we all work together, we could gain 3 to 5 Councillors representing the coast at local government level. We should focus on the many things we do have in common, it does not mean give up

their ideals, their principles, it means working together to achieve common goals, such as control of building by construction c o m p a n i e s , maintaining and cleaning of streets, dropped kerbs, obstructed pavements, play parks, provide adequate public transport, a Public Library, a Cultural Centre, youth Club, a Mother and toddlers centre plus employment opportunities for everyone at industrial units plus all the public services that are lacking in orihuela Costa.”

P.i.o.C was formed by several former members of the only party of the coast for 16 years, who struggled to make any headway with the ruling governing body in orihuela, located 35km away. the distance always caused problems and there has not been a Councillor for the Coast since 2015, no one to act on behalf of the local community, to deal with the concerns or complaints of residents of orihuela Costa. there were two Councillors for the Coast for a short term between 2011 and 2015 but they were blocked from supporting the coast at every turn, when it came to making decisions. orihuela town hall is where all decisions are made to decide the fate of the citizens of orihuela Costa, not the local satellite branch town hall in Playa Flamenca, which is merely

an administration office. no decisions can be made locally on behalf of the residents of orihuela Costa. the spokesman added: “We need to make our own decisions, spend money generated by the coastal residents for the coast, not rely on the governing body in orihuela city which fails to ensure the 55 percent of the budget generated by the coast is spent on the coast and does not provide adequate services and infrastructure.

“Peter houghton, roman Jiminez and norah Bond together with Priscilla Cromie, have all worked tirelessly the past 3 years, meeting with local businesses and residents who support the initiative of independence, which will take time, but, if we do nothing, nothing will improve, nothing will change!”

Padron is key there are many people not registered on the padron, who may not realise how important it is. as of February 2022, there are approximately 33,228 people registered on the padron of the 90,000 people actually living in orihuela Costa. if everyone registered on the Padron, the town hall would receive in the region of €300 per person every year but is currently losing approximately €15 million of revenue which could be spent on the needs of the coast. however, most people do not think registering on the padron is important.

P.i.o.C. intends to encourage the 55,000 or more people not registered to register, to give them the opportunity to have their say and vote in the next elections May 2023. the deadline to register to exercise your right to vote is between december 1st 2022 and 16th January 2023.

Mayors meet with hospital committee

Vital meeting

the Mayor of torrevieja, eduardo dolón, and the Mayor of Pilar de la horadada, José María Pérez, accompanied by the councillors fro health and Public health, have held a meeting with the Committee of the University hospital of torrevieja to discuss the current situation. the lack of resources that currently exist in the torrevieja hospital, both in terms of personnel and medical equipment, was a key topic for discussion.

Following the talks, both mayors expressed their concern about the imminent arrival of the summer season and the hospitals apparent lack of capability to deal with the surge in population. eduardo dolón pointed out that at easter there were numerous complaints from residents of torrevieja and other towns belonging to the department of health regarding the lack of health

personnel, especially in the emergency and observation areas.

Both Mayors, given the lack of information provided and forecasts for the summer season, have formally requested an urgent meeting with the Medical directorate of the hospital. they are requesting the presence of all relevant councillors, hospital management and the works committee, so that everyone can learn first-hand about the measures that have been taken to date and the plans to cope with a summer that will bring a massive influx of tourists. the Mayors said that the objective is for the hospital to be well equipped with resources and health personnel throughout the summer season so that the needs of the thousands of users are met. they have made it clear that a repeat of easter is not acceptable, where potential patients faced long queues constantly.

Tourism recovery eight times as many tourists travelled to Spain in March this year as in the same month in 2021, according to the national institute of Statistics (ine).

Still below numbers seen in the last ‘normal’ year before the pandemic – 2019 – the four million people who visited the country in the third month of 2022, long before the warm weather and ‘beach season’, massively outnumbered the 491,000 who holidayed in Spain in March 2021. Back in 2019, March saw 5.6 million foreign visitors arrive, but lockdowns and major travel restrictions in Spain and other countries meant a dramatic cut in holidaymakers from outside national borders in 2020 and 2021.

Figures for april are not yet published, so March 2022 is the most recent full month for which tourist numbers are available.

Visitors from abroad spent a very healthy sum this March – over €5 billion (€5,069,000,000) – compared with €544 million in March 2021, although as yet, still short of that of March 2019, which totalled just over €6bn (€6,035,000,000). data collated by Frontur surveys at Spain’s arrival points, and on spending, by egatur upon departure, British tourists are now returning in earnest – they are now, once again, the largest national group to visit the country, accounting for over 826,000 visitors in March and spending just over €1bn.

German visitors totalled 610,000 – five times the number from 2020 – and French tourists increased by 336 percent, numbering around 456,000. over the first quarter of 2022, Spain

Sra Maroto says she expects this trend to ‘intensify’ in summer, especially in light of the increased passenger flight capacity scheduled for the second quarter of the year, from april to June inclusive, and borne out by examining Social Security records which show a rise in employees in the hospitality industry for the month of april.

Murcia Airport renamed after revolutionary Murcia’s Corvera airport is to change its name to ‘aeropuerto internacional de la region de Murcia – Juan de la Cierva’. the region’s governing council approved the move last week ending months of debate and resistance.

Juan de la Cierva Cordorniu was an inventor and an air transport pioneer, who helped to develop technological advances in aeronautical engineering.

Cierva Cordorniu was the first to propose a commercial airport for the Murcia region in 1935. however, he was also involved in the plans to try

Spanish police arrest one of ‘Britain’s Most Wanted’

David Ungi - one of Britain’s most wanted fugitives

Spanish police have arrested one of Britain’s most wanted fugitives, sought for his suspected role in the murder of a teenager. British police believe david Ungi, 30, was involved in the fatal shooting in 2015 in Liverpool of 18-year-old Vinny Waddington while he was riding a motorcycle.

Ungi, who is also wanted in connection with heroin trafficking, left Britain less than 24 hours after Waddington

was killed, according to British authorities. two other men were convicted in 2016 of the 18-yearold’s murder.

Spanish police said in a statement Ungi was arrested along with three other British men in the town of Coin near the southern resort of Marbella as they entered a gym at a shopping centre. officers seized a firearm from a rucksack being carried by one of the men, Spain’s national

Police said in a statement. a police search of Ungi’s residence in Coin turned up a machinegun and two other guns as well as “abundant ammunition”, 15 kilos (33 pounds) of cocaine and 19 kilos of hashish, the statement added.

Spanish police said the operation was carried out in cooperation with Britain’s national Crime agency, which had put Ungi on its most wanted list.

Masks on planes still mandatory to and from Spain

Masks will still be compulsory on aeroplanes and all other public transport in Spain, even though the european Union has recommended they cease to be obligatory on flights. travellers to and from Spain should be aware that, even if in their country of departure or destination, they are not required to wear masks on board, they will still need to do so in order to comply with Spanish laws. health Minister Carolina darías says the national government has ruled out dropping the mandatory mask on all public transport, including air travel, even though the european air Security agency (eaSa) and the european Centre for disease Control (eCdC) considers they can now become optional. it is not necessary to wear these in airport terminals, at bus stops or on train platforms, although Spain’s government still strongly recommends doing so, especially where these are indoors. the legal requirement for wearing a mask in indoor areas was dropped after easter, although they are still mandatory in healthcare or medical centres – GP surgeries, hospitals, care homes and similar – as well as pharmacies, dental practices when not in the course of treatment, and opticians’ premises. air travel is, from a virus point of view, the safest form of public transport, as the Spanish airlines association (aLa) confirmed back in 2020 – the hePa air filters on board work vertically,

so movement of air in the cabin is top-down or bottom-up rather than circulating or horizontal, meaning what one person breathes out is not immediately blown onto the person beside them. hePa filters on planes are the same type as used in operating theatres to prevent the spread of infection, and the air supply in the cabin comes from outside the craft – at an altitude where no living organism, even bacteria, can survive due to the low temperature.

Whilst travellers often claim they have caught a cold, ‘flu or chest infection ‘on the plane’, this is very unlikely, and it is far more probable they either caught it in destination or at the airport terminal itself during crowded moments, such as security queues.

For these reasons, Spain continues to recommend masks worn in airports, but has not made this a legal requirement.

Spain launches ‘024’ suicide prevention hotline Spain has launched a new 024 suicide prevention hotline, with the strapline ‘Call for Life’, this service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. health Minister Carolina darias said it was a priority objective of the Spanish government to put an end to the stigmas and taboos that exist around mental health and ‘to break the silences that have weighed like a burden on it for years’. the health ministry said that ‘the 024 line is free, accessible, immediate, confidential and staffed by experts, to support both people who may be suicidal and their families and loved ones’.

024 will also be connected to the emergency services of Spain’s regions and cities to help those whose suffering is pushing them to the limit of their strength because, as darias explained, ‘a person with suicidal behaviour does not want to die, but wants to stop suffering’.

Suicide is the leading cause of external death in Spain and the leading cause of death in young people. according to data from the national Statistics agency (ine), in 2020 there were 3,491 deaths by suicide in Spain, which was 7.4 percent more than in 2019. darias stressed that the 024 telephone number is ‘a commitment of the government

of Spain, of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and a demand from society, which has increased in recent years’.

Spain has also set up an advisory committee for the development of the 024 line, as well as for future suicide prevention actions, made up of experts from different areas, who will ‘contribute their experience and knowledge, considering all possible perspectives and voices’, said darias. the 024 hotline will involve the participation of experts to intervene in complex high-risk situations. in a first phase, the telephone will be managed by the red Cross, while the health Ministry finalises the tender for the service. to ensure that everyone

can use 024 in conditions of equality and non-discrimination, the ministry said that the line is adapted and will include a video-interpretation service in sign language, as well as a telephone interpretation service that offers a solution to overcome language barriers by allowing communication in real time with people who speak another language. the launch of the 024 line is in addition to other health ministry initiatives in the field of mental health, including the Speciality of Child and adolescent Psychiatry, and the Mental health action Plan, with a budget of €100 million, to be debated at the next interterritorial Council of the national health System (CiSnS).

PP calls for government to repair Cabo Roig promenade the Partido Popular for orihuela has called on the new local government team to urgently make the repairs of the sinkhole in the La Caleta pedestrian promenade in Cabo roig, which it claims presents a serious danger of landslide and collapse. in the fifteen days of the Popular Party’s solitary government, prior to the motion of censure, this work was authorised. dámaso aparicio said: “We left all the administrative and economic procedures ready so that the new government only had to award the contract and start the work.” he added that the PP was ‘accused of having cleared many matters urgently in the last days’ and did so because the party considered them to be key issues. “the new government has been in government for 20 days and we know nothing about the award of this contract,” he said. aparicio visited the area accompanied by PP colleagues Víctor Valverde and José Galiano.

Victor Valverde also expressed his concern that the beaches are already full of people, and in addition “in a few weeks the high season will begin and we will find all this area under construction. it is not a good time to start the works when our beaches are crowded with

tourists. We left everything ready, including credit, and we don’t understand how or why it is now paralyzed.” the group ended by pointing out that this work is the responsibility of the infrastructure department and

that even the Sindic de Greuges of the Valencian Community demanded at the beginning of this year that the necessary measures, personnel and material be put in place to repair the damage in this pedestrian and tourist area.

Local drink proven to have health benefits a refreshing and nourishing drink native to the Valencian Community could be a huge ally in maintaining healthy gut bacteria – a crucial balance that can cause a multitude of wellbeing issues when it is out of synch. horchata is made from the milky juice of tigernuts with added water and sugar. the result is like a milkshake, but not an overly creamy one and the flavour could be described as a mixture of almond and coconut.

Most newcomers to the Valencia region, when they first try it, find it an ‘acquired taste’, one they would rather experience in shot-glasses than pint-glasses, but the majority find it ‘grows on them’ fairly quickly, and a supermarketbought litre carton – typically around €1 in price – might only last them a day or two. the study carried out at Spain’s national research Council (CSiC) used exclusively non-pasteurised horchata, with its full starch content left in and without added sugar. this much more ‘natural’ and lessprocessed version of horchata is more likely to be found in a delicatessen or health shop,

typically at a higher price. the Food technology and agro-Chemistry institute took 35 volunteers and had them drink 300ml of horchata a day for three days. after this investigators examined participants’ intestinal flora and the research results were published in the scientific journal nutrients. a microbiotic dnasequencing showed up three broad profiles of gut bacteria before the three-day horchata-

drinking, and in all cases, these had changed after the experiment. they were all ‘enriched with various beneficial bacteria’, including germinating butyrate, which is ‘a substance with multiple benefits for the intestine and the immune system’, the research team says.

Bacteria generated as a result of drinking horchata included

akkermansia, associated with weight loss; Christenellaceae and Clostridial; Faecalibacterium, associated with glucose control; Bifidobacterium and Lachnospira. these were all present to a greater or lesser degree before the experiment, but were enhanced notably after drinking horchata for three days. it is already known that horchata is rich in resistant starch, good-quality fatty acid such as is found in olive oil, and that it is a provider of polyphenols, a type of antioxidant which is present in the tigernuts themselves.

Gut bacteria does not just affect digestion, or even the immune system – it has much wider effects over bodily and mental health. after the brain, the digestive system has the most connections to the nervous system, which is responsible for all bodily functions. and around 70 percent of the immune system cells are in the digestive network.

For the digestive system to work properly for the benefit of these immune cells and nerve connections, the balance of bacteria in the gut has to be optimum.

Hope for Alzheimer’s cure researchers in the United States have found a molecule that rejuvenates aging brains and helps with the recovery of memory. While this is a preliminary finding that has only been observed in mice, it is providing new hope in the search for a cure to alzheimer’s, a still-incurable disease that affects people across the world. the search for treatment against this neurodegenerative disease is one of the most difficult objectives of biomedicine. the human brain is made up of 100 billion neurons that form some 100 trillion connections with each other. the best and the worst of the human mind come from the organ, which weighs barely a kilo and a half. alzheimer’s is called the silent epidemic because it begins to kill neurons in the brain about 20 years before the first symptoms appear, such as the loss of memories stored in brain cells. By the time this happens, it is impossible to stop its progression. no experimental treatment has been able to reverse the disease. not even its causes are clear. in this context, every new discovery that can help regenerate aging brains is worthy of attention. the new study is inspired by something that many doctors and scientists have known for decades: the body’s organs have the ability to regenerate, but with age, the body begins to

produce molecules that hinder or nullify this ability. Laboratory experiments have shown that something called parabiosis – surgically combining an old and a young rat together, for example – is enough to improve muscle strength, the proper functioning of the liver and reverse obesity. there is a huge gulf between a mouse that is terrified because it foresees an electric shock and a person who is unable to recognize his child due to alzheimer’s disease, but possibly the same biological mechanisms are at work. the scientists analyzed the brains of these animals and found that new oligodendrocytes, a type of cell

that makes up the white matter of the brain and supports the gray matter where the neurons are located, had begun to regenerate. these cells produce proteins that form a protective cable for axons, the projection of a nerve cell that is received by other neurons and can measure up to one meter in length. the study shows that these new oligodendrocytes were produced in the hippocampus, the brain’s epicenter of memory. researchers also injected cerebrospinal fluid from young people into old mice and recorded a similar rejuvenating effect. in contrast, the same fluid from older people reduced cell regeneration capacity.

Just a pinch of salt for Orihuela Costa RBL

Where else can you take pictures in the famous pink lakes or climb a salt mountain - other than the salt lakes of torrevieja? this is an incredible experience, and one that was enjoyed by more than 30 members of the orihuela Costa and district Branch of the royal British Legion recently. it was all aboard ‘the Salt train’ as the branch took part in a guided tour that lasted a little over an hour, during which time the group was told about the different phases of production of the salt, the origin of the salt lakes, their characteristics, the flora and fauna that coexists in the area, as well as the mysterious pink colour of the salt lakes. the train took the group from the very centre of the city into the facilities of the salt lakes where members alighted to take photographs in the pink lake.

there was even an opportunity to climb the salt mountain. it was explained that the colour of the torrevieja Pink Lake is due to special algae that inhabit the bottom of the lakes, equipped with microorganisms that give this original and characteristic colour. For this reason, the salt lakes are also known as the Pink lakes of torrevieja.

Both the torrevieja pink lake and the green lagoon of La Mata have been used for centuries for the production of salt.

Currently about 750,000 tons of salt are produced every year as different formats of sea salt for sale, both in the national market and in the international market, with almost 50 percent of its production going for export.

Salt boats with a capacity of up to 30,000 tons can regularly be seen leaving the city destined

mainly for countries across northern europe and the United States. and one interesting fact that that was learned: salt is the only mineral that is edible and also, along with water, the only food product that has no expiration date. the trip around the salt lakes was followed by an excellent lunch at the Sunrise restaurant in orihuela Costa where the meal was served against the magnificent backdrop of a deep blue sky and the Mediterranean sea. new members are always very welcome at the branch which meets at the olympia restaurant, Mil Palmeras, at 7.30 pm on the third thursday of every month. GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP the pound’s sudden fall from grace has accelerated through this week. Stung by those comments from the Boe last week on the very real prospect of an impending UK recession, and with little assistance from UK economic data, the political landscape, or even a risk-on market, the pound has been left to fester for the most part. the latest GdP print, which covered Q1, and was released yesterday (thursday) morning, missed estimates, with only a 0.8% gain versus around 1% expected. Whilst it can hardly be described as a catastrophic miss, given the relative apathy surrounding the UK just now, any bad news just gets magnified. the big worry now is that the Boe’s prediction of possible negative growth in the UK by the end of this year, might get an earlier bus ride into town. this is all especially worrisome, when you consider that inflation is at levels not seen since the 1970’s. the actual GdP report was probably a bit worse, reading between the lines. GdP actually declined by 0.1% between February and March, only January saved the report from looking much weaker. So, this loss of momentum has arrived despite the cost-of-living crisis accelerating. the prime Minister, speaking after a cabinet meeting in Stoke, said that the economic data was ‘encouraging’, which is one way of describing it. the latest Labour report for the UK is out next tuesday. any sudden weakness here will send the stagflation brigade into overdrive. their cries will be intensified if the CPi inflation reading a day later increases yet again, as is expected. as for the pound, well GBP/USd has now broken below 1.2200, and is within earshot of

the 1.2000 psychological region, so markets may be tempted to explore the region. GBP/eUr has fared somewhat better, and has broken back over 1.1760, which is as much to do with an even weaker eUr/USd (see eUr).

EURO the ‘will they, won’t they’ debate on whether the eCB finally raise euro-area interest rates for the first time since 2011, looks to be finally coming to an end. eCB head, Christine Lagarde, pretty much said as much this week, after admitting that the move can come just ‘a few weeks’ after the eCB finish their bond buying programme in Q3.

So, after a plethora of eCB officials waxed lyrical about a potential rate hike, Madame Lagarde finally put her weight behind a move.

July looks a nailed-on bet then. it is fascinating to see just how much the landscape has altered since last november, when the eCB were telling us that there was little chance of an eCB rate hike this year.

So, why is the single currency not rallying then? that bit is all about the frequency of hikes projected by markets. With the fed seemingly prepared to raise rates by at least 50 bps at each meeting until they manage to calm inflation, both the Fed’s possible neutral or terminal rates look like being way ahead of the eCB, even if the eCB do make a move in July. Given the time since their last hike (11 years), it is entirely likely/ understandable that the eCB will only move again once more this year. hence the weaker eUr/USd. on that note, having defended 1.0500 for such a long time. eUr/USd finally broke lower under the pressure of an inflation-busting greenback., not coming to a halt until it had moved under 1.0400.

Spain scoops third in Eurovision

all eyes were on the eurovision final gala at the Pala alpitour in turin. From Spain, hopes rested on “SloMo”, the song by Chanel terrero that was the winner of the Benidorm Fest. despite the fact that her election as representative was surrounded by controversy many preferred rigoberta Bandini’s “ay mamá”- she finally achieved widespread popular support from her compatriots. her powerful staging in turin finally earned her a welldeserved third place, which was Spain’s best ranking in the musical competition in the last 27 years. the United Kingdom took second place, with Sam ruder’s Space Man and showing a clearly united europe the winning country was the Ukraine. the band Kalush swept the board with

votes for their song Stefania.

Wearing a dress designed

by Palomo Spain, Chanel managed to fulfill the requirement of interpreting an ambitious choreography and simultaneously singing at the highest level. the audience went wild when halfway through the song she took off her jacket, grabbed a fan and under a rain of sparks she sang the chorus of “SloMo” in her highest pitched version. “Muchas gracias, thank you very much. i will remember this for the rest of my life,” she said in front of the excited audience, who cheered intensively. the choreography was designed by Kyle hanagami, who has been in charge of dances by Jennifer Lopez or ariana Grande. at 31 years old, Chanel

asserted her experience as a dancer in musicals in Madrid, or the choreographies she performed on the program “tu cara me suena”. the previous days, all bets indicated that the Spanish would be at the top of the table. Finally, she fulfilled all the forecasts.

Chanel terrero obtained 459 votes: 228 corresponding to the televote, and 231 from the jury. eight countries awarded her the highest score, and with her numbers she far exceeded the record of votes obtained by the band Mocedades in 1973 (125 points). although the Kalush orchestra of Ukraine won the contest - in what was considered a show of international solidarity for the suffering of the war, in Madrid they celebrated the third place as a victory.

Tributes flood in for Brit killed rescuing his dog

a man who died rescuing his dog from a river in Spain has been described as the “heart of his family”. Paul Lebihan, from Gateshead, got into difficulties in the Bolulla river, near Benidorm last week. the incident happened near the Fonts de l’algar nature reserve in the Costa Blanca. Mr Lebihan had been rescuing his dog alex, who survived the incident. the 25-year-old amateur boxer was visiting fiancée tabatha abbott and regularly travelled there after the pair met while he was on holiday. his cousin Kallym Bell, 19, has set up a fundraising appeal to help his family cover repatriation and funeral costs. the online campaign has already topped more than £12,000 over several

days. Mr Bell said his cousin “made such a positive impact on everyone else”. “it shows you the kind of kid he was, that so many people have come forward,” he added. “the support has been brilliant, it just sums him up as a character - that he was willing to help so many people and when we needed help for him it shows you how much he influenced others.”

Mr Lebihan, who has also served in the royal navy, was well known in Leam Lane where he grew up. his parents, deborah and Paul, have flown to Spain.

Mr Bell said his cousin was “the very best to be around. he was the happiest i’d seen him,” added.

“he was the life of the family, he was the heart of the family, one of the biggest family men ever and he would do anything for anyone - he had so many friends. to lose someone that influential, that important to everyone’s lives, everyone is still in shock. “he boxed from the age of 12, he’s a very talented boxer, he fought numerous times, he loved it - it was his passion - even when he went into the navy he continued his boxing.

“We just want him back to where he belongs with family so he can be put to rest properly.” a spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth office said: “We are supporting the family of a British man who died in Spain.”

Cash boost for Elche Children’s Care Home

the sun made a welcome appearance for the recent hog roast lunch and ‘funday’ in aid of eleche Children’s Care home (eCCh). the event was held at the Bell house, San isidro. More than 150 attended the event and a much-needed 1,030 euros was raised for the charity. there was a grand prize raffle, organised my Sue Scott holden and Mati Cuthbert, which raised 459 euros. Prizes included a four illuminated pictures, donated by Mia toys and a meal for tow and 6 bottles of wine, courtesy of Sean Bell. the crowd was entertained

by Woody all afternoon and tickets sold for the event and his performance further boosted the coffers. there was tombola with numerous prizes which proved popular and raised 76

euros. david and annette english and Michelle and dave diggle were on hand to accept the donation on behalf of the charity.

Mummified body found

the mummified body of a man missing for three years has been discovered on the roof of an abandoned, unfinished building in alicante. a rucksack next to the body carried the identification of Julian ortega, and the building falls into the original search area. the discovery was made by a local urban explorer - someone who explores abandoned and part-built buildings as a hobby – who alerted the police.

La Zenia drainage project the drainage project for La Zenia, orihuela Costa, is advancing as the second of its four phases has been put out to tender, according to infrastructure councillor Ángel noguera.

With a budget of over €1.5 million, the work is designed to improve collection of rainwater and will involve demolitions, diverting utility supplies, installing collectors, underground pipes, intermediate and outlet collection tanks, and replacing infrastructure.

Los Alcàzares Camera Club on TV!

Back in November, Los Alcàzares Camera Club visited the home of member Nilam Wright for a demonstration of Indian cooking and a curry lunch. At that time Nilam was being filmed for the popular Channel 5 series ‘Bargain-loving Brits in the Sun’ so the Camera Club were delighted to see themselves on TV in the episode aired recently Tuesday 26th April.

The ‘highlight’ of the event was when member Brian set light to the poppadom he was cooking and had to put out the flaming food by throwing it on the floor and stamping on it. Nilam’s only comment was ‘Nice shoes, Brian!’

Whilst they can’t promise any celebrity appearances on TV in the future, Los Alcázares Camera Club is always looking for new members, who can be permanent residents in Spain or ‘swallows’. The Club meets on the first Tuesday of the month on ‘Zoom’ at

10.30am (Spain) or 9.30am (UK). At the meeting members discuss the monthly photo competition and usually watch a photography workshop video. On the third Tuesday of the month, the Club has a field trip to take photographs followed by a meal to which family and friends are also invited.

Gino D’Acampo linked to Viewers livid over ‘Strictly’ anniversary GMB’s show spoiler The BBC is set to sign This Morning chef Gino D’Acampo for the 20th anniversary of its hit show, Strictly Come Dancing, which will take place later this year.

The 43 year-old Italian chef has become a firm favourite on TV screens, with his hilarious sense of humour – and brilliant cooking skills – earning him legions of fans. Not only has he been a chef on This Morning for 13 years, he also won I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! in 2009, and is loved for his Road Trip series on ITV, in which he stars with fellow chefs Gordon Ramsay and Fred Sirieix.

Whilst the BBC is yet to confirm if they have indeed signed the chef, a TV insider said: “Every year the team behind the show want to get the perfect balance of stars, whether it’s for their sex appeal, humour, or if they are a particular draw for older or younger viewers.

They continued: “But they view Gino as someone who has universal appeal, who is up for a laugh and more than capable of keeping audiences entertained.

“He also has serious star appeal, having been on This Morning for 13 years and winning I’m A Celebrity.”

Gino revealed that he was

invited to take part in Strictly Come Dancing in 2019, but said that he didn’t have time for it.

He said: “That show would require a lot of time and training.

Who has got time for that? Not me . . . not at the moment.”

Despite his popularity on This Morning, in March Gino left the programme for a short period as he went to spend time in his native Italy.

He told Philip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: “I was just walking around because I am a little bit sad today because I am going to go to Italy very soon, so this is my last This Morning, until probably autumn or winter.”

Phil joked: “Thanks god for that”.

Gino added: “Unless you two are going to come to the island of Sardinia and do something live there. Do not panic, because I have so many beautiful things for you.”

Gino once revealed that he likes to take six months off from work a year.

He said: “I’ve been having six months off for the last eight to ten years. I am a great believer that you need to have balance in life. If I work for six months, then I want to have a holiday for six months because my life cannot always be about work.”

SAS: Who Dares Wins fans were left infuriated after Good Morning Britain revealed last week who was in the final before it had even aired.

Sunday saw the Channel 4 programme come to an end as four recruits made it to the final stage, putting their mental and physical strength to the ultimate test. While many viewers are excited to discover how the last episode will pan out and what challenges the contestants will have to overcome, some who tuned into GMB on Thursday were left livid after finding out the identities of the contestants earlier than they would have liked.

On Thursday’s show, finalists Paige Zima, Claire Aves, Cat Turnbull and Shylla Duhaney spoke to Ben Shephard and Susanna Reid about their

experiences in the competition, as well as the milestone achievement of an all-women final.

However, on the series, they hadn’t yet been announced as the four remaining participants… so fans were unsurprisingly furious at the big reveal. ‘#GMB well done. The episode of #saswdw hasn’t even aired yet so we didn’t know who was in the final #spoilers,’ one person tweeted.

‘Thanks for absolutely ruining the final,’ another person remarked, as someone else said: ‘So we now know none of the men make it past interrogation phase.’

‘Sick of these spoilers, just pointless watching now,’ another person commented, their disappointment apparent.

Ahead of the final, the four remaining competitors spoke out about how it felt to be in the final, with student and former dancer Paige saying: ‘To be able to look beside you and see it’s all women is a revolutionary feeling.’

Semi-pro footballer Shylla told The Sun: ‘You can’t underestimate women just because we look smaller or might be physically weaker.

‘It comes down to mental resilience and whether you have the strength to keep pushing.

We did.’

Paramedic Cat added: ‘The guys, for whatever reason, couldn’t cope with being left in their own heads.

‘They are bigger and stronger and maybe they’ve relied on that. In interrogation, it’s about the mental game.’

Choirs raise nearly 4,700 euros at charity concert

Crescendo International Choir performed a well-received concert alongside Chivenor Military Ladies Choir at Salt Church, Los Montesinos, recently, raising 4,680 euros for four charities. Chivenor Military Ladies Choir sang 10 songs including ‘Home Thoughts from Abroad’. This original song was performed by this choir at the Royal Albert Hall in London. It was also performed in the movie Military Wives. Crescendo Choir performed nine works, including ‘Fix You’ and ‘Viva la Vida’, both by Coldplay. The two choirs sang two pieces of music together: ‘I Can Only Imagine’ and ‘You Raise Me Up’.

About 350 people attended the concert and gave an extended standing ovation to both choirs when it ended.

Shortly before the concert began, the Royal British Legion, led by David Last, performed on the terrace outside Salt Church. Crescendo Choir will be giving two free concerts soon. The first will be on Saturday 28th May, at 8pm at Iglesia Parroquia Nuestra Senora del Pilar in Los Montesinos. The second will be

held on Saturday 4th June at 6pm at La Siesta Evangelical Church at Urb. La Chaparral in Torrevieja.

Crescendo lives up to its ‘international’ name, with many nationalities among its expat members along with a Spanish Musical Director, Irene Oliva, and Spanish pianist Cristian Martinez. Chivenor Military Ladies Choir is made up of female military personnel, wives, partners, mothers and daughters of military personnel serving or retired. Many ladies who performed at the Royal Albert Hall in 2011 are still members of the choir.

Lemon-Dill Salmon Burgers

Ingredients 1 (14 oz.) can salmon, drained completely 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1/2 cup panko bread crumbs 1 clove garlic, minced Zest of 1 lemon 2 tbsp. lemon juice 2 tbsp. freshly chopped dill 1 tbsp. Dijon mustard 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

1/2 tsp. red pepper flakes Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil Hamburger buns, for serving Mayonnaise, for serving Romaine, for serving Tomato, for serving Red onion, for serving

Directions 1. In a large bowl, combine salmon with egg, bread crumbs, garlic, lemon zest and juice, dill, Dijon,

Worcestershire, and red pepper flakes. Season with salt and pepper and stir until fully combined, then form into 3 or 4 patties.

2. In a large skillet, heat oil. Add patties and cook until golden, about 4 minutes on each side.

3. Serve patties on buns with mayonnaise, romaine, tomatoes, and onions.

Fish Tacos

Ingredients 3 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil Juice of 1 lime 2 tsp. chili powder 1 tsp. paprika 1/2 tsp. ground cumin 1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper 1 1/2 lb. cod (or other flaky white fish)

1/2 tbsp. vegetable oil Kosher salt Freshly ground black pepper 8 corn tortillas 1 avocado, diced Lime wedges, for serving Sour cream, for serving For the slaw: 1/4 c. mayonnaise Juice of 1 lime 2 tbsp. freshly chopped cilantro 1 tbsp. honey 2 cups shredded purple cabbage 1 cup sweet corn 1 jalapeño, minced Dirtections 1. In a medium shallow bowl, whisk together olive oil, lime juice, paprika, chili powder, cumin, and cayenne.

2. Add cod, tossing until evenly coated.

Let marinate 15 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, make slaw: In a large bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, lime juice, cilantro, and honey. Stir in cabbage, corn, and jalapeño. Season with salt and pepper.

4. In a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat, heat vegetable oil. Remove cod from marinade and season both sides of each filet with salt and pepper. Add fish flesh side-down. Cook until opaque and cooked through, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Let rest 5 minutes before flaking with a fork.

5. Assemble tacos: Serve fish over grilled tortillas with corn slaw and avocado. Squeeze lime juice on top and garnish with sour cream.

Slow cooker tips If you’re new to a slow cooker, or perhaps it’s been hiding at the back of the cupboard for a while, these helpful tips and tricks will ensure you get the most out of this versatile piece of kitchen kit.

Plan Ahead Do your prep the evening before, have everything ready to go in the fridge, then just switch on your slow cooker before work. If you’re new to slow cooking, it’s worth following recipes specifically written for slow cookers to begin with, until you gain more confidence into how it works.

Chop Evenly Chopping root vegetables, such as celery, onions and potatoes, to the same size ensures they will all cook evenly.

These denser vegetables are all ideal for slow cooking.

Don’t Overfill A slow cooker should be filled to a minimum of half full and a maximum of three-quarters full.

If there’s too much in there, it won’t work as efficiently and it may spill over and make a mess, which is not ideal.

Keep the Lid On It may sound obvious, but it’s often tempting to remove the lid to have a look at what’s cooking.

Leave it intact until the dish is fully cooked so as not to lose valuable heat and increase the cooking time.

Room Temperature Meat If you put meat straight from the fridge into a slow cooker, it will significantly increase the cooking time. Allow it to come to room temperature first.

A Dairy Ending Adding any dairy products – milk, cream or yogurt – too soon to your slow cooker will cause them to split and curdle, so ensure they are added right at the end of cooking.

It’s been a long couple of years since we last saw our family. So, my wife and I invited our two sons and their partners over to see us next summer. We know things are tight for them, so we offered to pay for their flights, all four of them. The Most Important but Most Disrespected Road Sign The Stop sign is undoubtedly one of the most important we come across on a regular basis. It is also one of the most recognised around the world, thanks to standardisation. However, despite being one of the most important road signs, according to the Directorate of Traffic (DGT), it is also one of the least respected by drivers in Spain.

Failure to act correctly at a Stop sign will mean the loss of four points on the driver’s licence and a fine of 200 euro.

The DGT report that thousands of drivers do not pay attention to these signs and on many occasions, they systematically skip them. The DGT proved this on their official Twitter account recently, where they posted a one-and-a-half-minute video recorded by one of their drones, in which more than 20 vehicles failed to comply with the Stop signs when joining a conventional road.

On many occasions, the DGT says, drivers treat the sign as if it were the Cedael Paso, or Give Way sign.

Remember, at a Stop sign you must bring your vehicle to a stop completely,

if riding a motorcycle, you must also put one foot firmly on the ground.

The purpose of the video was to remind drivers that the Stop sign is one of the most important in road safety and that it must be respected and not confused with a Give Way. After the publication, a number of users criticised the sign, saying that many Stop signs do not fulfil their function and that others are “unnecessary”, in locations where they should be replaced with a

Give Way sign. However, whatever we may think of them, we cannot get away from the fact that Stop means STOP! According to data provided by the DGT and Fundación LíneaDirecta, thousands of drivers violate Stop signs on a daily basis. It is an infraction that causes hundreds of collisions due to frontal impacts and, in 2018, there were more than 3,200 incidents with victims, of which 75 died due to them failing to stop at a Stop sign.

If you get an email containing the words “multa” (fine) and DGT in your inbox, it’s almost certainly fake. It will be better to be suspicious rather than scared, and in any case, you should not click on any link contained in the email.

Be assured, the DGT does not normally communicate sanctions by email.

Messages that seek to spread malicious software (and steal personal or banking data) arrive almost daily in mailboxes, according to the National Institute of Cyber Security (INCIBE), and the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) is one of the common hooks.

Fraud campaigns are cyclical and massive and are usually based on the same thing: appearance of reality and threat, or invitation. In the mail there is an alleged message from the DGT -with their official logo and, sometimes even displaying that of the Ministry of the Interior-, in which the victim is told that there is a pending fine to pay

or that the vehicle is immobilised, or sometimes both circumstances at the same time. The email also contains a link you are encouraged to click in order toresolve the issue. Do not click on links presented like this.

Those who send these messages rely on several pillars: haste, distraction, curiosity and fear. Users bite by inertia. To avoid the error (clicking and triggering the installation of a virus or other similar disasters), INCIBE offers some basic tricks.

How to spot a fake email As general recommendations, the cybersecurity institute reminds users, for example, to check that the sender’s email is spelled correctly, both their name and domain (what appears after the @) and that in the body of the message there is no grammatical errors or a tone or vocabulary that does not correspond to what is expected. Any call to action, such as downloading a

file or entering personal data or clicking on a link, should also be suspected.

INCIBE’s advice is useful for any circumstance, but it should not be necessary if the message comes from the DGT, because they do not normallycommunicate sanctions by email. Fines reach drivers or vehicle owners by certified letter, and as a secondary method, if the first has failed, they are published in the official bulletins or on the Town Hall bulletin board (physical or electronic), and always on the Edictal Board of Traffic Sanctions (TESTRA).

What is TESTRA and how to consult a fine When a suspicious message appears, it only takes five minutes to check if that unknown fine exists. The query in the TESTRA can be done through the vehicle registration, the DNI or the name and surnames. It is not necessary to have a digital certificate or use the electronic DNI, because the data is public.

Since November 25, 2010, sanctions have been added to this electronic board, where the General Directorate of Traffic, the Basque Government Traffic Department, the Catalan Traffic Service and some 1,000 town councils publish their edicts.

Lee Kyoung-hoon held off Jordan Spieth on the back nine to win the AT&T Byron Nelson for the second year in a row.

The South Korean shot a nine-under 63 at TPC Craig Ranch to win on 26 under, a shot clear of American Spieth.

Spieth began one off the lead held by Sebastian Munoz, who finished in a tie for third on -24, and was aiming for a second title in as many tournaments.

Despite failing to overhaul Lee, Spieth looked in strong form before the US PGA Championship which starts on Thursday.

Spieth travels to Tulsa in Oklahoma in search of a fourth major, one which would see him complete the career Grand Slam by winning all four of golf’s biggest titles.

Here’s a question for the FA. If they’ve gone as far as clearing the diary so that the FA Cup Final is the only big clash on Saturday, why not go the whole hog and have it kick off at 3pm? Yes, I know the answer is probably something to do with international broadcast revenues, but it does feel like a missed opportunity.

A bit like Chelsea are probably feeling today. Mason Mount took his personal tally to six Wembley finals and six defeats when he missed the crucial spot-kick from the Blues’ perspective.

Not many would have had money on the Greek Scouser Tsimikas settling matters, but it was just nice to get through a penalty shootout that didn’t have a Kepa drama.

Liverpool fans didn’t get the perfect day out though - Mo Salah was subbed in the first half, a move that Klopp hopes was more “precautionary” than “well, that’s him not playing in Paris then”. If that wasn’t bad enough, Virgil van Dijk went off as well. Somewhere in Paris, Sergio Ramos is having a little smirk.

But, if Lukas Fabianski ever plays in front of the Liverpool faithful again he will get a heroes welcome if they do nick it over the final two games - the Pole guess right and dived left, saving Mahrez’s kick.

All that means that it could go to a final day - as a title chase like this really should. Liverpool have to beat Southampton on Tuesday night and then will hope City screw it up against Villa, meaning a win for them at home to Wolves will see the Premier League go where none of us really believed it would.

Is now a good time to mention the Manchester United punchup in training? No idea who was involved, but good sources suggest that two United players proper went at each other and had to be separated. It’s the most fight either of them (no matter who they are) have shown all season.

As I don’t think I have said before, I like my VAR decisions like I like my hot baths - long, slow, and potentially lifechanging. The checks at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium seemed to go on for ages as Davinson Sanchez’s flick on to Ashley Barnes’ arm from about 10 centremetres was overly analysed until they found an angle that made it look like it was a penalty.

Frank Lampard’s team went into the game knowing a win would guarantee safety. The fans, again, did their bit by keeping the opposition awake in their hotel at 04:30am. Everton led - twice!

A completely spawny goal followed by a cheap penalty (well taken by Richarlison to be fair) meant that the Ev could dream of a stress free week.

Brentford ripped that dream apart, scoring twice and leaving Everton two points above Burnley having played the same number of games - which is one fewer than Leeds. A win against Palace on Wednesday keeps them up though, to be fair, on the final day they’ve only got an Arsenal team that will be licking their wounds having missed out on the Champions League.

And that means, for Leeds to stay up they need Villa to beat Burnley on Thursday night and then better Mike Jackson’s result on Sunday. Leeds have Brentford and Burnley have Newcastle.

It’s going to the wire at the bottom.

Both Aston Villa and Crystal Palace probably care a little bit about finishing in the top ten, so a 1-1 draw doesn’t really help either. Stevie G laughed off suggestions that Ollie Watkins could be off to the Hammers in the summer - and Watkins certainly celebrated his goal like a player planning on sticking around next season.

Villa could have a big part to play in where the title is going - City could well need to win against them next season, so watch out for Gerrard sticking himself on the bench to do everything he can to stop that happening. If Liverpool do beat Southampton, Tuesday night through to Sunday afternoon is going to be very, very painful as the media crank up the ‘Gerrard can finally win a title for Liverpool’ narrative.

Watford’s players seem utterly determined that Roy Hodgson will retire for good this time. They’ve been absolutely abject since he arrived and the 5-1 home kicking against Leicester was, at times, hilarious. Having made the mistake of scoring first and helping the home fans remember that long lost feeling of what it might be like to get three points at Vicarage Road, some calamity defending and falling over led to Brentan’s side opening the floodgates.

This really is not only one of the nicest lakes in Spain but in my opinion one of the greatest to fish and can be very prolific.

Eleven anglers took part and we were positioned around the match point, with seven on the warm side and four on the beach.

Winner on the day was yours truly, Ian Brown. Drawn on the end peg on the beach I had initially 4 fish on the method feeder with wafter in as many casts. This slowed down and the rest were all caught on the slow sinking

feeder using 6mm pellet for 36.14kg, mostly carp with only two barbel.

In second place was Dougie Hornblow who fished peg 6 on the warm side and fell just short with 35.72kg. Dougie used similar tactics to take mainly carp with the odd barbel.

In third place drawn on the cold side was Barry Smith. Barry struggled in the first few hours but eventually contacted the carp quite a long way out at about 50m and fishing maggot he weighed 22.40kg.

The other section winner was Alan Smith who weighed 19.08kg from peg 2 using 8mm pellet.

The pairs even was won by Dougie and Richard King with 47.90kg.

Rods N Reels After a nice meal and a good night’s sleep with a few beers thrown in at the nearby Argos Hotel, we staged the second day at the same venue.

Only seven anglers took part so we spread out the pegs on the warm side and what a difference it made to the fishing.

Runaway winner was the old Welsh wizard, Dougie Hornblow. Drawing the same peg as the day before he virtually emptied the place of carp with 56.36kg, mainly on the slow sinker or method feeder.

In second place was Barry Smith who drew peg 2 on the warm side which was the first peg on this occasion. He

weight of 86.64kg,191lb in old money.
