Benidorm to host Eurovision Party to mark its leading role in choosing this year’s eurovision Song Contest entry for Spain, Benidorm will host a huge open-air party night with warmup bands and live performances before broadcasting the event live. earlier this year, stage and tV actress Chanel terrero, 30, was voted by the panel of judges as winner of the Benidorm Fest, which was basically a televised audition to decide who would be representing Spain in torino, northern italy on Saturday 14th May. although Chanel, whose catchy number SloMo is already tipped to do well, has lived in Barcelona since she was four, she was born to Cuban parents on their native island, making her the first-ever Latin american candidate to represent the western Mediterranean nation at the eurovision. huge tV screens will be set up in Benidorm’s Plaza de la hispanidad on the night, and a gigantic stage – also wired to the screens for full-crowd viewing – will host a string of bands and solo artists in a ‘preparty’ starting two hours before the eurovision Song Contest.

Mayor toni Pérez says there will be space for up to 4,000 people to join the audience at the ‘pre-party’ and eurovision screening. anyone based in or likely to be heading to Benidorm in a fortnight’s time should be aware that the equipment is due to be installed starting from Friday, 13th May, meaning some access to the Plaza could be restricted, and that all traffic will be diverted from the square from 5pm on ‘eurovision Saturday’.

• If you moved to Spain after 1st January 2021, your valid UK licence will be recognised for 6 months from the date you obtained residence.”

British ambassador to Spain hugh elliot said on Saturday “the UK and Spanish Governments are still negotiating. UK and Spanish Ministers spoke today and agreed to rapidly accelerating talks next week in the hope of reaching an agreement soon - as we already have in almost every other eU Member State.

But we’re not there just yet. and we will not have reached an agreement in time for the end of the current grace period (30 april).

What does this mean for you? it means that if you have been resident in Spain for longer than six months, your UK-issued licence will no longer be

valid to drive here from 1 May. driving a vehicle without a valid licence is illegal in Spain. if you are affected by this change and need to drive, you should not wait for the outcome of the negotiations and should take immediate steps to apply for a Spanish licence - as we have been advising for some time now. this does not affect visiting motorists from the UK or Gibraltar or UK licence holders who have recently moved to Spain. you have six months from the date you get your residence document to take a Spanish test.

We know this will cause significant difficulties for those who have not yet been able to exchange their licence. i am relieved that most of you were able to exchange your licence as advised before the end of the transition period. negotiations will continue early next week and we will provide you with further news when we have it.

We remind you that the fine for driving with a licence from a third country which has no exchange agreement with Spain is 500 euros and the immobilisation of the vehicle.”

Costa Blanca Darkness Into Light call for public support as ‘Darkness Into Light’ walk returns for the first time since 2019 darkness into Light Costa Blanca will take place at sunrise on May 7that 5:30am from the Cabo roig inn, Cabo roig darkness into Light is the charity’s flagship fundraising event each year, involving tens of thousands of supporters in ireland and around the globe symbolically walking 5km from darkness into light darkness into Light, the annual fundraising event supporting the suicide prevention charity Pieta and over forty other international partner charities, will return at sunrise on May 7th. as the world reopens, darkness into Light will return with its organised events in 24 international locations, beginning in darkness at sunrise and continuing through to dawn to symbolise the journey from despair to hope.

Speaking on the importance of the event in supporting the ongoing work that Pieta and partner charities undertake, Sinead Price, Fundraising and Marketing director for the organisation said, “darkness into Light is vital for fundraising,

Expats in Spain to vote in UK elections British expats in Spain are celebrating after the law in the UK was finally changed to allow them to vote in national elections. the move could affect hundreds of thousands of Brits across Spain and many more worldwide. the new ruling is part of a bigger elections bill which received royal assent last week, and British ministers have committed to implementing it

within the current parliament.

Previously, UK citizens lost the right to vote 15 years after they last voted in the country. the rules, which will take time to set up, mean British citizens will be able to vote in the constituency where they were last registered on the electoral roll, or, if they were not registered as a UK voter when they left, in the place where they were previously resident,

subject to showing proof to local registration officials. the new right to vote only applies to UK parliamentary elections. other parts of the bill included issues affecting UK elections, such as greater protection against election fraud, more support for disabled people at the polling booth and measures to prevent intimidation at the ballot box.

First International Parade for the Coast due to popular demand and to lift the gloom of the last two years, the first ever international Parade will take place on Saturday 7th May at 4pm in Cabo roig. orihuela Costa has probably the most diverse mix of nationalities in Spain with over 100 nationalities living and registered here. this international Parade is a non-political, non-religious, non-ideological day of fun and celebration for everyone young and old. the international parade is organised by members of the Cabo roig Business association and oC avanza who also organise the Saint Patrick’s day Parade in Cabo roig each year. the 10th anniversary Saint Patrick’s day Parade was

cancelled twice, only two days before each parade took place; the first because of Coronavirus in March 2020 and in March 2022 and then because of unseasonably heavy rain. the parade will begin at 4pm, however, the usual parade route will be closed from 1pm, so spectators and participants are advised to arrive between 2pm and 3pm to park. there is parking available in the streets of La regia and on the open ground close to el Gato. Parking is limited in the entrance road to Cabo roig near the roundabout and in front of the two light shops. there

is also limited parking around Consum aguamarina.

Oh what a night

the royal British Legion Concert Band together with Stevie Spit (unfortunately because of illness Lucinda o’Connell was unable to take part) performed a spectacular charity show on Friday evening 29th april to a full house at the Cardenal Belluga theatre, San Fulgencio. Jack Kemp rBL Spain district north Chairman welcomed everyone to this charity event and spoke about the dreadful events unfolding in Ukraine, this was followed by a minutes silence to think about the families that have fled their beloved homeland and have left family members behind to defend what is rightfully their country. he went on to say that the money from tonight’s event would be divided between the Ukraine appeal, Mens shed and the rBL. the mayor of San Fulgencio who was in attendance was thanked for providing the theatre for the evening’s performance. “after two years of Covid restrictions it was really good to be playing once more in a theatre to a live audience,” said Graham robinson. there was a good selection of music from the band including tchaikovsky’s 1812 overture, the Greatest Showman,

Jersey Boys sung by Stevie who also gave a wonderful rendition of the Prayer and the audience enthusiastically joined in with such favourites as Vera Lynn songs from World War two, Pomp and Circumstance, rule Britannia and Jupiter. the evening was hosted by Keith nicol and concluded with the Spanish and United Kingdom national anthems and of course the royal British Legion March.

Local police rescue 80 year old man from submerged car officers of the San Fulgencio Local Police rescued an 80-year-old man who had crashed into a ditch while driving his vehicle down a country road in the area. the alarm was raised by a neighbour at around three in the afternoon who reported that an elderly person was drowning and that he could not get him out of the car because he was wedged inside the vehicle. immediately, officers who were on duty in the area rushed to the scene. the rescue had to be quick, since the vehicle was gradually sinking further into the canal and the victim showed symptoms of exhaustion and hypothermia. after locating the exact place of the accident, officers could see that the car was almost fully submerged in the water, and its driver was only able

to breathe by sticking his head out through a small space in one of the windows. despite the window being open slightly, the man was having serious difficulty breathing. With no time to lose, the officers jumped into the water. While one officer held the man’s head through the narrow gap in the window, the other officer obtained a tool that was used to break the glass and the officers were able to dislodge the man from inside the vehicle.

With significant effort, the police managed to place the driver, at first, on the roof of the vehicle and, later, they moved him to the edge of the ditch, and with the help of bystanders they managed to get him out of the water.

Finally, the injured man, although he presented symptoms of hypothermia, did not need hospital admission.

U3A AGM on Monday 25th april the torrevieja U3a held its first aGM as over the last two years, meetings were not permitted due to the ongoing Covid pandemic.

Members attending the meeting were able to pay for upcoming social events, renew their membership whilst new applicants were able to join up as members. the meeting took place in the Centro Municipal ocio building in torrevieja which is once again their home for all meetings, thanks to the torrevieja town hall. the association members were informed of another purchase on behalf of the current President’s nominated charity, the Stroke association in Benijófar. the latest purchase comprised a new exercise bike to help sufferers in their recuperation. the proposed and agreed President’s charity for the coming year will be “help Vega Baja” and the U3a will surely raise similar amounts of money in due course to help them purchase valuable equipment for hVB members and all those in need. the aGM closed and members stayed on at the centro for a menu del dia arranged by the association social team. the next meeting will be held on May 30th and will see members listen to a member of the orihuela police discussing “fraud and scamming”, followed by Bollywood entertainment.

Murcia man faked death at Punta Prima

the Guardia Civil believes that the car found floating in the sea after plunging from the cliffs at Punta Prima, was part of a ruse to fake a death. it is alleged that the owner of the vehicle, a Murcian tax advisor named as Jose Luis Galiana Blanc, set up the ‘accident’ to coincide with 600,000 euros going missing from a client account. the 50 year-olds car was spotted at the foot of the cliffs in Punta Prima on 17th February, sparking a search for his body. however, no body was recovered. he was not in the vehicle, nor was he found in the

surrounding waters, despite the fact that engine was still warm and the lights on when Police arrived at the scene. the official search has now been called off and officers have told family members and a judge that they have images of the missing man leaving the scene after the car plummeted into the sea and they believe him to be alive and well. reports in the Spanish press claim that Mr Galiana, who also owns two hospitality businesses as well and working as an accountant, had told a friend that he was experiencing

financial difficulties and had taken some money. a complaint was later filed by an associate of Mr Galiana with the national Police regarding a bankruptcy fund he was handing for a client. the complaint alleged that a bank account with 600,000 euros had recently been cleared out.

Police believe that Mr Galiana’s dissaperance was planned and voluntary. however, the trail of the missing man has been lost after the final images of Mr Galiana walking away from the scene of the incident and through the Punt Prima area.

The May Fair returns Spain extends

torrevieja’s much anticipated May Fair returns this year from 11th to 15th May. the famous ‘Sevillanas’ fair takes place once again in the port area with the distinctive green and white striped ‘casetas’ or tents offering food, drinks, music and dancing.

Various dance groups and equestrian centres participate in the event, centred on andalucian culture. the event, which was founded here 35 years ago, is officially recognised by tourism and cultural authorities. there will be a main stage with various acts, music and dance performances and events throughout the week of the May Fair. the fair is hugely popular with residents and tourists alike.

Several businesses and charities, including aFa alzheimer’s association and alimentos Solidarios, run the individual casetas and many have their own dance floor offering budding dancers the chance to try out their Spanish dancing skills. often, members of the public dress in their most flamboyant sevillanas traditional costume for the event. the installation of the fair is currently underway with sound checks due to take place on Monday 10th May. on May 11th the programme itself begins with

the Ministry of the interior has extended the restrictions on unvaccinated travellers from third countries, including the UK. tourists travelling from Britain to Spain will not be allowed entry for non-essential reasons unless they are fully vaccinated or have proof of recovery from Covid within the past six months. the Spanish government has extended the ban on unvaccinated visitors for a further tow weeks, until Sunday 15th May “for reasons of public rder and public health due to the health crisis caused by Covid-19.”

Entry criteria: • Travellers from the UK who are over

the age of 18 must have proof of full vaccination schedule or a valid Covid recovery certificate. if the second jab was administered more than 270 days previously, then a booster jab is also required for entry.

• Teenagers aged between 12 and 17 years old, who are unvaccinated, can travel to Spain. however, they must either have a recovery certificate or a negative PCr test carried out 72 hours before departure.

• Children under the age of 12 yearsold do not need proof of vaccination nor a Covid test.

• UK passengers who have Covid Pass do not need to complete a Passenger Locator Form.

More than 1,500 volunteers collect 15 tons of waste the Vega Baja Sustainable Consortium has held the largest voluntary rubbish collection in the history of the region.

More than 1,500 volunteers, from different municipalities, collected waste such as cans, bottles and masks from their local green areas. this initiative is part of the european campaign ‘Let’s Clean up europe’, which aims to avoid pollution caused by careless disposal of items in natural spaces.

Electricity bills set to drop

Minister for ecological transition teresa ribera has vowed that electricity bills could come down by as much as 30 percent – starting next month.

She made the statement after hearing that the european Commission (eC) has given the green light for Spain and Portugal to cap the price of gas, which will have a knock-on effect for the wholesale price of electricity. the european Commission gave its approval for an iberian exception allowing Spain and Portugal to decouple the price of gas from that of electricity for the next 12 months. the political agreement enables the creation of a temporary mechanism that will cap the price of gas to an average of 50 euros per megawatthour which should result in electricity bills being halved for about 40 percent of Spanish and Portuguese consumers with regulated rates.

Spain’s ecological transition

and the demographic Challenge that “all consumers will benefit from this agreement” and that “the Commission has committed to working actively to increase the interconnection of the iberian Peninsula with the rest of europe.” the Spanish and Portuguese governments — both led by Socialist Prime Ministers — had been calling on Brussels since last summer to implement measures to reduce electricity prices which have skyrocketed as a result of increased demand for natural gas, supply chain issues and geopolitical tensions including the war in Ukraine. eU member states trade electricity on a wholesale market based on a system of marginal pricing which in practice means that everybody gets the same price for the electricity they are producing regardless of how that electricity is produced — renewables are produced at near-zero cost. the price is then set by the most expensive way of

producing electricity. the Commission argues that “this model provides efficiency, transparency and incentives to keep costs as low as possible.” yet Madrid and Lisbon had argued the iberian Peninsula should be allowed to cap prices to a maximum of 30 euros per megawatt hour because of their low interconnection with the rest of the bloc, describing themselves as an “energy island”. the two countries also have a much lower dependence on russian gas — they primarily import from algeria — as well as high renewable generation. the announcement comes after eU leaders agreed at their last Council summit in late March for the Commission to “urgently assess the compatibility of emergency temporary measures in the electricity market notified

by Member States, including mitigating the impact of fossil fuel prices in electricity production.”

King Felipe has nothing to hide King Felipe Vi of Spain has publicly produced a breakdown of his assets – the first time a reigning monarch in the country has ever done so and an extremely rare move among royalty anywhere in the world.

Son of the abdicated King Juan Carlos i and on the throne since July 2014, hrh Felipe says he opted to reveal the full extent of his fortune and how it is made up in a ‘transparency exercise’ – attempting to be open and honest with his public. although the monarch’s wealth does not include his wife, Queen Letizia’s assets, the overall figure is surprisingly low and would not even put him into the top 100 of Spain’s richest individuals.

Felipe Vi may, in fact, be the ‘poorest’ King in europe. his full accounts reveal he is worth €2.57 million – which, if you own property in the province of Málaga’s ‘Golden Mile’, in exclusive parts of ibiza, Barcelona or the Greater Madrid region, would automatically put you on level-pegging with the King of Spain, even if you had nothing in your current account. and Felipe Vi does not even own any property or land – his wealth, along with bank deposits and investment funds - is made up of jewellery, antiques and works of art. the majority is either in

savings accounts, current accounts or investments €2.26m – and the collectors’ items and jewellery he owns as personal effects amount to just under €306,000. this is the total worth of Spain’s monarch – net assets after liabilities are deducted – and he does not even have a pension plan. none of his money is held abroad – all his accounts and investments are in Spain – and it includes his wages and the State funding he gets for his work as international ambassador, which has to cover staff costs and other professional expenses. naturally, Spanish media sought to compare their head of State’s wealth with that of other

royal and aristocratic leaders, and have estimated that Felipe Vi’s personal assets are around 5% of those of Queen elizabeth ii of the UK. the British monarch, 96, appears among the world’s richest lists published by the Sunday times, although Buckingham Palace has never revealed any exact figures for any member of the royals. according to the Sunday times ‘rich list’, hrh elizabeth ii had a fortune of around £365m in 2021, or about €434m. her fortune is now £10m higher as at the end of 2021 based upon that of 2020, which is thought to be the result of her late husband, Prince Philip’s legacy, following his death a year ago aged 99.

Spaniards want summertime forever two in three residents in Spain want to end the twice-yearly clock-changing, according to a recent poll – and of these, seven in 10 want to stay on ‘summer hours’ for good. national polling databank CiS found that 65.5 percent of those surveyed would prefer to stay in the same time zone all year, but want longer, lighter nights – 67.3 percent of women and 63.7 percent of men would rather not have to lose an hour’s sleep on the last weekend of March each year, but want to be able to avoid this by not bringing the clocks forward an hour at the end of october. over 2,500 took part in the CiS poll between 11th and 18th april, starting a fortnight after the last ‘changing of the clocks’ where europe and most of the rest of the northern hemisphere went forward an hour, and most of the southern hemisphere went back an hour. although debates have been under way in Spain for some years about putting the country back into its ‘natural’ time slot – GMt in winter and BSt in summer – around 70 percent of the CiS survey respondents want to remain on CeSt, an hour ahead of BSt and two ahead of GMt, for good. ‘daylight-saving time’

was introduced during the petroleum crisis of the 1970s, but according to Spain’s diversification and energySaving institute (idae), the actual reduction in fuel use and cost to households is minimal, and not worthwhile as compensation for the sleeppattern disruption and impact on productivity caused by widespread tiredness. idae estimates that the average home saves 6 euros a year on electricity bills by changing the clocks. the european Commission launched an eU-wide survey in 2018 seeking the views of the then 28 countries which had, by law, been observing daylightsaving time en masse for the past 16 years, with a view to possibly abolishing it. and even though 84 percent of the 4.6 million europeans

who responded were keen to abolish the practice, the debate has long been shelved due to a failure to reach a consensus among the eU’s civil service and heads of State.

Given that the Greenwich Meridian line runs through the very tip of eastern mainland Spain, the entire peninsula – except for Jávea, part of northern Catalunya and a slice of the Castellón-province coast – should, by rights, be in the same time zone as the UK, ireland, Portugal and Morocco, and in fact in Spain as a whole only the Canary islands are on the correct time.

Curiously, three UK counties – Suffolk, norfolk and Kent – sit east of the Meridian line, so should be an hour ahead of mainland Spain and of the rest of Great Britain, rather than an hour behind the former.

GBP / EUR UPdatE GBP a combination of factors has combined to drive the pound materially lower this week.

UK economic data has played a part, with particularly weaker retail Salesand Consumer Confidence catching the market’s attention.

Consumer Confidence is now approaching an all-time low. the latest UK government borrowing figures for the past financial year may have also reflected that government borrowing requirements had halved from the previous year, but that previous year was the worst on record. the most recent data showed that March was the worst month for UK government borrowing on record, and thegovernment spent a whopping £70b in debt interest payments alone last year. this all brings the Boe into focus. they would love to raise interest rates some more, as early as next week we hear, as they attempt to battle surging inflation in the UK. But with the cost-ofliving skyrocketing, and wage increases unable to keep up to pace, they look to be attempting to walk a very thin tightrope wearing big, fluffy slippers. the fear here is that the Boe could end up raising interest rates into a weakening economy, which never ends well. all of this helped to drive the pound lower. in particular GBP/USd, which having failed to hold 1.3000 after refusing to break below with any significance for so long, capitulated and moved back to 1.2400. With interest rates set to surge in the U.S (see USd), and markets walking back from prospective UK rate hikes, this move was perhaps expected, if a little sudden.

EURO Much the same as the pound, eUr/USd has found the going rather challenging over the past week, and the bulls have, at times, been

attempting to catch a falling knife, as the pair slipped through support after support in fairly quick succession. We started the week at 1.1000, and at the time of press, we have now broken below 1.0500. Give the markets a growing interest rate differential, and they will give you currency volatility in abundance. oddly enough, some of the euro area data hasn’t been too bad this week. the latest German iFogave a clean sweep of beats across the board, with Business Climate, Current assessment and expectations all surpassing estimates. however, Consumer Confidence (both German and eU wide) missed, which one might expect. the growing energy dispute between the eU and russia is also a factor weighing on the single currency. the eCB look as though they may finally be readying themselves for a July rate hike.

Governing Council Member, Martins Kazaks, reiterated his comments of last week, and suggested that a hike could come in July.

Furthermore, he suggested that the two to three hikes priced-in already by markets was reasonable, which will further solidify market expectations. however, even if the eCB do raise rates in July, and then again in September, they will still be falling way behind the pace of the Fed, and it is those expected changes in interest rates that are driving the dollar, and the declines of currencies against it.

GBP/eUr has therefore been caught in the middle of a duel which resembles one perhaps attempting to find the best-looking currency in an ugly competition. the broad range of 1.18001.2050 has held for now, and any moves beyond this may take their cue from what the eCB and Boe do or don’t do, over the next few weeks.

Torrevieja sports centre continues to leak after €6 million investment in renovation

after more than six million euro of investment, leaks have been detected in the roof of the remodelled sports palace. the building underwent a thorough renovation before hosting the women’s handball world championship in december. after the heavy rainfall that the city has experience this spring, it has become apparent that the roof leaks in as many as nine different sections. reports last week indicated that the main budget item for the comprehensive reform of the main sports facilities in torrevieja was intended for the repair of its roof.

Videos of the leaks - made in March and april - have been shared extensively through mobile messaging applications and show at least nine points where the water reaches the indoor court from where buckets have been placed to protect the new flooring. the Councillor for Sports, diana Box told the press that works will continue at the expense of the building company. the councillor specified that the new roof ‘passed the sealing tests’ but clarified that they cannot always reproduce the natural conditions

in which rainfall occurs. “Before the works, anyone who was in the building had to leave due to the intensity of the leaks, now some deficiencies have been detected that are being analyzed and will be resolved,” she reiterated.

For the last few weeks, the sports facilities have been open to the public again. one of the most in demand services is the heated indoor pool which was closed for over a year. the pool has also been completely renovated, due to serious technical problems. opposition party Sueña torrevieja planned raise the matter in the ordinary plenary session last week, citing a series of deficiencies in the finish of the renovation. Sueña claim that part of the furniture has not been replaced, that the plumbing system continues to become blocked, requiring

the frequent intervention of drainage companies, handles and doors have not been repaired, one of the toilets for people with reduced mobility is inaccessible and the pool lacks an anti-humidity machine. Pool users themselves also criticised the quality of the shower and the drainage therein, claiming that even one person using the shower at a time causes a flood, even though not a lot of water comes out of the shower head. that said, many swimmers are glad the pool is open once more.

For the last year, swimmers were forced to use the CdM facility in Playa Flamenca which is half the size – 25 metres long while torrevieja’s pool is 50 metres.

New Mayor makes budgets a priority

the first interview on radio orihuela Cadena Ser has taken place with the new Mayor of the municipality of orihuela, Carolina Gracia who represents PSoe. the transition happened after a motion of censure was signed by Ciudadanos – which at that point formed the coalition government with the PP – against the Mayor emilio Bascuana. the motion was supported Cambiemos and was passed last Monday.

Carolina Gracia explained the emotions she is experiencing after the years she has been in politics and found herself unable to offer the city the government she wanted to, due to paralyzed and blocked projects. the day of the interview was an important one as the new council was working on the delegated areas of responsibility for each of councillor, although it was already known that the Ciudadanos would continue to keep the same councillors in place that it had when it governed with the PP. in addition, the new Mayor did highlight one change; that the Cs will assume responsibility for Festivities and will leave education, which will be held by the PSoe. the government agreement

between the PSoe and Ciudadanos is still unfolding, but the priorities include approving the budgets, in order to be able to ‘develop projects and respond to the day-to-day needs of the city’.

Carolina Gracia believes that they can raise the document at an extraordinary plenary session before June. the Mayor also believes that in the remainder of the legislature there is enough time to ‘advance projects and proposals and demonstrate the capacity for work and understanding between the two parties’ that now take the reins of the consistory, with the support of a third party. as general secretary of the PSoe in orihuela, Carolina Gracia has asked for a postponement, of the elections for the general secretary of the local group, a request she has been granted. during the interview she was asked if she will present herself again, on the candidacy list of the socialist antonio Zapata or as the primary candidate for the municipal elections of 2023. however, she was drawn on the answer, saying there is plenty of time to pronounce her decision and for now she is now focused on settling in the City Council.

Local health service Rojales responsible for child’s day of death mourning for former Mayor

the local health authority has been ordered to pay compensation of 250,000 euros to the family of a twoand-a-half-year-old boy who died after suffering repeated medical errors at the Lo Marabú health centre, rojales and at torrevieja hospital in 2018. the Provincial Court in Madrid ordered Mapfre insurance to pay out on the claim after the child was misdiagnosed and sent home several times. the child was diagnosed with infectious gastroenteritis in october of 2018 and six days later was treated for a cold with a fever. on 5th november he was found to be suffering from an acute skin infection in the ear canal and a fever. he was also vomiting and had issue with his walking an balance. the same day he was rushed to torrevieja

hospital and was given a Cat scan and lumbar puncture. the diagnosis was inflammation of his brain tissue caused by an infection or autoimmune response. he was intubated and died on 27th november. the court found there had been several medial errors which led to the child’s death. despite the legal order to pay the compensation, Mapfre (the insurer) appealed but a court in Madrid agreed with the original findings. the judge concluded that “the delay in assessing the symptoms and the delay in treating the cerebral edema were the cause of the child’s death, which could have been avoided with good medical action”. he ruled that the ‘medical care given to the child at torrevieja hospital ws not in accordance with good practice’.

the rojales City Council has declared an official day of mourning for the death of former mayor antonio Martínez García, at the age of 84. as a sign of mourning, the flags of all the municipal public buildings will fly at half-staff for the person who led the consistory during the years 1979 and 2003. antonio Martínez was also a provincial deputy and director of the regional agency of the Provincial Council of alicante. the Mayor of the Municipality, antonio Pérez, has paid personal tribute and on behalf of the corporation and the municipality has sent his condolences to the relatives of antonio Martínez. the funeral will be held in the parish church of San Pedro de rojales.

Emmerdale shake-up

TV has confirmed Emmerdale is set for a major format shake-up. The longrunning soap will air a week of special episodes featuring flash forward scenes next month. The editions will be broadcast from 9th May - and give viewers a glimpse into what the future holds for some key characters.

A statement from the channel said the week will begin in menacing circumstances. It said: “In the gloom we see a misty graveyard with an open grave. The slamming of an iron police cell door and the sound of a gunshot rings out in the woods before we see a crumpled car steaming in the gloom having just had a terrible accident… But whose bodies are in the wreck and what does it all mean?”

The show has released three ominous images to coincide with the announcement. They feature characters who will be heavily involved

in the drama. One image includes Cain Dingle looking into a mirror, which could mean viewers will finally see the end of his war with long time adversary Al Chapman.

Another image features Noah Dingle looking at photos of Chloe Harris on his laptop. The character, played

by Jack Downham, has developed an unhealthy obsession with Chloe and is currently using a drone to spy on her.

The release hints that Noah’s behaviour may be about to be exposed, which could be the catalyst that sparks a turbulent week of drama in the Yorkshire village.

The final image shows a concerned Gabby Thomas looking at a mysterious hooded figure. The character will be alone at Home Farm and is concerned Jamie Tate may be back from the ‘dead’ when things start going bump in the night.

Marbella named Europe’s ‘Most Exclusive Destination’ Marbella has been named ‘Most Exclusive’ place to visit and bagged second place in the ‘European Best Destination 2022’. The prestigious web portal Eu ro p e a n b e s td e s t i n a t i o n s. com was founded in Brussels in 2009 to promote travel and culture across the continent in conjunction with the European Commission’s European Destinations of Excellence Network, nominees are chosen by the general public for the final ranking in each of its categories.

Around half a million votes are cast every year when the potential ‘Best’ are up for scrutiny.

Destinations which reach the top levels of each list are given free publicity in some of the world’s most widely-read and highly-acclaimed media – Forbes, Yahoo, Geo, and glossy magazines printed on every continent by Condé Nast, which include the long-running global women’s fashion-and-feature monthly, Marie-Claire.

Mayor Ángeles Muñoz says that, in the two months since the polls closed, the advertising Marbella earned as its second prize has already reached 2.6 million potential travellers.

Just being nominated is already lucrative for any European destination, since it puts them into the top 20 out of 400 previously long-listed, meaning they feature on a website consulted by over six million travellers annually seeking ideas.

This alone typically sees visitor numbers increase by between 13 percent and 40 percent in a given year, she explained.

The 2022 winner and the only destination beating Marbella is the Slovenian capital of Ljubljana, described as ‘colourful’

and ‘green’, and one of Europe’s first to completely pedestrianise its city centre, meaning you can ‘hear birdsong’ as you go shopping.

Marbella, in its reservechampion slot, is described as ‘capital of the sun’ and ‘the preferred destination for travellers looking for relaxation, shopping, refined hotels and restaurants, also local handicrafts, golf, outdoor sports, elegance and refinement’.

Visitors flocking to the Costa del Sol holiday hotspot ‘thanks to the council’ include ‘digital nomads’ – people who work remotely or whose jobs are non-location specific – ‘sports enthusiasts, gourmets, companies and investors’. Marbella is hailed as an ‘example of good practice at European level’ in sustainable and responsible tourism ‘of very high quality’.

Kim Jong-un pushes nuclear program Kim Jong-un has used his latest military night parade to highlight that he has issued orders to reinforce his country’s nuclear program. The ‘forces of the republic must be fully prepared to fulfil their mission and their deterrence task at any time’, he stressed in his speech.

The parade to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the founding of the North Korean armed forces was held last Sunday night. Pyongyang did not hold back on its display of might. It exhibited all its new additions in ballistics. There were submarine-launched missiles (SLBMs), tactical missiles, multiple rocket launchers (MRLs), and also the hypersonic missiles that Kim himself had announced in January of last year, and that were tested for the first time in September, according to the regime. But the star of the parade was the largest intercontinental missile developed by the North Korean army, the Hwasong-17. Three of them were paraded on their transportation and launch vehicles to mark the end of the event, between bursts of fireworks.

North Korea claims to have successfully tested this projectile, which it had already

shown in a previous parade in March of last year. But analysts consider that the launch of that rocket, nicknamed “the monster” by international experts due to its gigantic dimensions, was a failure as the missile exploded shortly after taking off.

Kim, accompanied by his wife Ri Sol-ju, showed up at the parade in a white marshal’s uniform — the title by which his fellow citizens often refer to him — instead of the civilian suits he has worn on previous occasions.

In his speech, the supreme leader - who does not necessarily speak in public whenever he attends a parade - assured that “we will continue to take measures to further strengthen and develop nuclear-armed forces, which our country possesses, at the fastest possible speed.”

Kim assured that the main

mission of his nuclear weapons is to deter other countries from starting a war. He did not mention the United States or South Korea, the nations that Pyongyang considers its greatest enemies. But he did issue a warning: “Our nucleararmed forces will have no choice but to carry out their second mission if any force attempts to infringe upon the fundamental interests of our country.”.

The words of the third member of the Kim dynasty in North Korea were uttered as South Korean prepared for a new government under the conservative Yoon Suk-yeol, who won the presidential elections last March. The former attorney general has promised a tougher policy against Pyongyang, in contrast to the approach maintained by the outgoing head of state.

Two food trends expected to stay post pandemic The pandemic changed the way many of us shop, cook and eat. There are several trends expected to stay around after the pandemic is over and done with. Two of the most prominent are online shopping and healthy eating.

It’s no surprise that online shopping enjoyed a massive surge during lockdown. While many regions of Spain still have a lot of catching up to do in terms of online grocery shopping availability, figures from other regions indicate as many as one in five families were doing the weekly food shop online. Ali Webster, director of research and nutrition communications for the International Food Information Council (IFIC) said, “We found in 2021 that a full 20% of people, one in five, were shopping online for groceries at least on a weekly basis. This is compared to the 11% who said this in 2020 and 13% in 2019. Forty-two percent of people say they are online shopping at least monthly this year compared to a third of people last year.”

IFIC also asked consumers if they planned to continue shopping for groceries online: “Most people who said they were doing more online grocery shopping said they planned to continue to do so after the pandemic,” Webster said. “And many people said they would actually increase the frequency of their online grocery shopping.

“Nearly 40% said they would do it more often and nearly a third said they would stick with what they were doing.

Just 20% said they would buy groceries online less often.”

The demographic that said it would reduce online orders were people 65 years and older. This group of consumers was the most isolated during the height of the pandemic and may look forward to the social aspect shopping in person explained Webster.

Another consumer trend emerging from the pandemic is many consumers are taking a closer look at the healthfulness of their diets.

“In a survey we did at the end of 2020, in December, we found that every one in three people said their habits had become healthier,” said Webster, revealing “A significant chunk of people established or re-established healthy eating patterns and it seems like many people are sticking with it.”

However, the healthy eating trend is not spread evenly across different consumer groups. Younger consumers, for example, said their eating habits had become healthier.

“This is a group of people who may have less on their plate family-wise or are just establishing their own eating habits,” Ms. Webster said.

Women were more likely than men to say their eating habits had become less healthy during the pandemic. Webster said it was due to the “undue burden” placed on many women during the period.

“Whether that be through taking care of children or taking responsibility for online learning, or all of the above while shouldering a full-time job, there does seem to be less time available,” she said.

Torrevieja North Neighbourhood Crime Watch meeting Torrevieja North Residents Neighbourhood Crime Watch group, led by chairman Doug Allen, held its first public meeting for two at the newly refurbished Oasis in San Luis.

Doug expressed thanks to David Longworth and friends who drove a van load of aid to the Ukraine, a fantastic feat.

After reviewing crime reports and security issues, advice was provided to the meeting on personal safety and financial protection, especially when using portable card machines and the prolific use of distraction thefts. Councillor for International Residents, Gitte Lund Thomsen, presented information on the need for residents to keep their Padrón up to date (every five years),

the benefits in obtaining a TIE and maintaining residency.

Gitte advised that new courses were being arranged on how to obtain a digital signature, this becoming more important in using council services. Gitte further gave updates on the upcoming town improvements to the bus service and upcoming new bus pass system. The meeting was told about the plans for the refurbishment of the port and plans for the new bus station. The meeting was pleased to hear Gitte advising that there was a budget set for La Siesta park but works have been delayed due to covid. It will be a great relief to the whole area to see that eyesore and valuable asset restored to public use.

Adrian Barbudo was introduced

as his company, Revoluz, is working with the town hall to reduce co2 in the town . Revoluz will provide individual advice to residents on energy saving and best prices for energy as well as advice and guidance on the use of solar panels. The meeting was advised of planned guests for future meetings, including an open invitation to the Mayor and Councillors for waste, parks and gardens. Discussions are in hand for the British Consulate team to come again to talk about driving licences and pensions.

It is hoped that the N332 team will be able to return to advise on the new traffic laws with the Eco Park advising on recycling.

The next meeting will be on May 30th 4.30pm at Oasis.

Measles cases surge 80% as pandemic interrupts vaccine schedule Measles cases are up by almost 80% worldwide this year, revealed the UN last week. Experts warned that the rise of the “canary in a coal mine” illness indicates that outbreaks of other diseases are likely on the way.

The global pandemic interrupted the usual vaccination schedules for non covid diseases across the globe. UNICEF and the World Health Organisation said in a statement that the situation has created a ‘perfect storm’ that could put the lives of

millions of children at risk.

More than 17,300 measles cases were reported across the world in January and February, compared to around 9,600 during those months last year, according to new data from the UN agencies.

The current data reveals that have been 21 large and disruptive measles outbreaks in the last 12 months to April, most of them in Africa and the eastern Mediterranean.

Christopher Gregory, senior health adviser in UNICEF’s immunisation section,

said that because measles is the “most contagious vaccine-preventable disease” it often serves as a warning sign.

“Measles is what we call the tracer, or the canary in the coal mine, that really shows us where those weaknesses in the immunisation system are,” he said.

He said yellow fever was among the diseases that could surge next, after rising cases were reported in West Africa.

“We’re particularly worried about those countries that are most fragile, where

the healthcare systems are already really struggling, where they’re still trying to deal with the impacts of Covid on top of these outbreaks,” he said.

Somalia recorded by far the most measles cases over the last year with more than 9,000, the UN data revaled, followed

by Yemen, Afghanistan, Nigeria and Ethiopia – all countries engaged in some form of conflict.

There are also fears that the war in Ukraine could spark a resurgence in the

country after it recorded Europe’s highest rate of measles between 2017-2019.

More than 23 million children missed out on routine vaccinations in 2020 as the Covid pandemic descended, the largest number in more than a decade.

The UN agencies said that 57 vaccination campaigns in 43 countries postponed at the start of the pandemic had still not been completed, affecting 203 million people – most of them children.

After 30 years of marriage, my wife has stated she wants us to sleep separately, and in separate bedrooms.

This is not something that I want, and I have told her so. I’ve asked her why but she won’t tell me, apart from saying she doesn’t sleep well.

Our relationship is fine as far as I am concerned, but she says she still wants to be in a bed by herself. I know I snore, but I have been snoring for 30 years so I thought she’d be used to it.

I fear we will lose what little remains of our relationship, if she moves in to the spare room.

I have a friend whose husband’s personal habits compelled her to wanting fresh air, and to sleep in

U3A outing

Thursday 21st April provided one of the best days of weather that had been experienced for quite some time and proved to be the ideal day for a Flower Festival.

A number of the Torrevieja U3A members took advantage of the sunshine and travelled, mainly by Eurotours coaches, to spend a pleasant day in Murcia that allowed everyone time for a bit of sightseeing, followed by most of the members meeting up in a traditional Murcian restaurant. After a meal, a bit more time was spent on sightseeing or enjoying a leisurely drink in some of the many bars along the route, until it was time for everybody to assemble along the course to enjoy the amazing spectacle of the ensuing Flower parade.

Novice Drivers It may be some time ago that many of you passed your driving test, but every day there are many more embarking on the early stages of their driving experience, novice drivers.

According to an investigation carried out in 2019 by a group of scientists in Arizona (United States). It has been found that novice drivers are eight times more likely to be involved in a traffic collision or minor incident during the first three months of driving. These are caused by being involved in “scares” such as sudden braking, swerving or unexpected acceleration.

For the first year after passing the driving test, new drivers must display a green-backed L plate on the back of the car. The mandatory sign serves to help other road users know that the driver is a novice.

Although it is commonly called an L plate, the official name is the V-13 signal.

The sign is formed of a white L on a green background. The surface is reflective (level 2), and its measurements are 19.5 centimetres high by 15 wide. Likewise, the letter must have a length of 15 cm high and 10.5 wide, with a line thickness of 3 cm.

In the same way, it is not enough that the L is visible, but it must be placed correctly: in the upper left part of the rear window of the car.

If you are a novice driver, the penalty for not displaying the L sign is 100 euro, but it does not entail the deduction of points on the driving licence. The justification for it is in article 18 of the Road Traffic Law: «Signs on vehicles whose purpose is to inform road users of certain circumstances or characteristics of the vehicle in which they are placed. The service it provides, the cargo it transports or its own driver, will be adjusted in terms of its

characteristics and placement to the provisions of Annex XI».

In the same way that you can get a fine for not displaying it, the same applies for keeping the sign when it is no longer necessary. Therefore, the regulations are clear: one year term. If after 12 months from when the permit was granted, the novel licence plate is not removed, the owner will be punished. Being a minor infraction, the fine will be 100 euro. For this reason, it is also necessary to keep this in mind if the vehicle is shared between a novice and experienced driver.

According to the DGT, a person who has just obtained a driving licence has eight initial points. If after two years, you have not received a fine, it will increase to 14. Likewise, after another three years without committing infractions, another one will be added.

Taking the driver to the maximum number of points established by the authorities.

Regardless of the traffic violations that have been committed, the term to recover the initial balance of 12 points is two years if no new offences are committed. If all credit has been lost, drivers will have to go through a recovery course at the DGT offices.

Novice drivers are not subjected to any additional speed restrictions.

The alcohol limit set for novice drivers is the same as that for professional drivers for the first two years, thus lower than the general population.

In other words, novice drivers have a limit of 0.30 grams per litre of blood (or 0.15 milligrams per litre of expired air), compared to 0.25 for other drivers.

Although, it is worth remembering that if you drink any amount, no matter how little, it is recommended that you do not drive.

Priority at Unmarked Junctions Traffic signs and road markings guide us on the road and the priority should be to pay attention to them at all times.

Both those placed on poles and those drawn on the ground guide vehicles while driving, advise or prohibit certain activities, and help maintain road safety.

Junctions can be particularly dangerous places. They are those black spots on the road where misunderstandings can arise that result in a collision that we always want to avoid, so it is of special importance to know what road signs and markings mean. But what about when the junction doesn´t have any markings or signs?

In certain scenarios there are no signs to guide the way, either because the roads are very small, because they are not considered necessary or for other reasons. Intersections are one of these cases and not knowing what to do if you come across an unmarked junction can be very dangerous.

The DGT explains that in any case the rule must prevail that the priority belongs to whoever approaches from the right side. It is something we must all know, but it is not applicable to all cases.

In fact, there are a few exceptions that need to be clarified so that you always know who has priority.

If there is one paved road and one unpaved road at the junction, priority always belongs to the vehicle traveling on the paved road. All this, regardless of which side the vehicle approaches.

If it is a junction joining a road, the vehicle that circulates on the main road is the one that has priority on all occasions.

The same as in the previous case occurs in the event that you approach a roundabout with your vehicle. Here, vehicles already circulating on the roundabout will have priority. Do not forget that roundabouts have their peculiarities and driving correctly in them is something that many times we believe at face value but that is not always the case.

The DGT offers tips when facing an unmarked junction that they hope will make everything much clearer: Approach with caution and slow down, watching for traffic ahead of time. Signal with the turn signals the manoeuvre if you are going to turn.

You have to look in all directions before entering the intersection, until you are sure that no one is approaching or in danger.

Except in the cases mentioned above, you must always give way to someone coming from the right.

You have to enter the intersection with caution and get as close as possible to the right edge of the road if you are going to turn right. Stay close to the left or in the centre if you are going to turn left at the intersection.

Above all, you are responsible for complying with the rules. There are many different signs: prohibition, location, direction... but when you lack these clarifications, you must be guided by what you already have to know in advance to maintain your safety and that of other road users.

Since the beginning of the Sunshine League we have now seen the very sad deaths of three of the founding members.

Bob Hornsey and James Walker started the Sunshine league in 2014 after meeting for a cup of coffee. Their thinking was that there was plenty of room on the coast here for another petanca league. One that was smaller and not so serious as the popular Las Salinas League. It was to be by invitation only and there was plenty of enthusiasm from the teams that were asked as many players longed to play twice a week.

The first match was on Wednesday 8th October 2014. The very sad news was that Bob died in March 2015 and therefore did not see how successful his baby was to became. Bob was, and still is, greatly missed.

James carried on and was the current Chairman of the Sunshine League committee until his untimely death in April of this year. R.I.P. James, your guidance and friendship will be hard to replace.

Colin Crewe, again in at the start, passed away earlier this year and was secretary of the Sunshine committee for many years and was a well respected man who loved the game. His sense of fun will be missed.

Each year since Bob died there has been held a memorial tournament in April to remember him and now sadly it is for three persons.

This year the tournament was held on Saturday April 23rd at Domino Bar in Los Altos. It was by invitation only and 11 teams took part.

A minutes silence was held before play started followed by applause.

The rain held off and the sun shone although the wind was very blustery.

The format was 8 timed triple games played by 6 players from each team.

Winning positions were determined by total points scored by the 6 team members. It made the contest close and interesting.

The winners were presented with a cup and 2nd and 3rd places with wine.

Finishing positions are as follows: McCoys 102 Phoenix 93 Dolphins 87 Knights and Peacocks Red 79 Buccaneers and Peacocks Marinaros 78 Falcons and Pumas 71 Phoenix Knights 63 Feathers 52 It was a very fitting day for three valued men. R.I.P.

Forget the Premier League title race - that’s just two teams fighting it out for top spot making a mockery of all those beneath them.

The relegation battle is where it’s at - Everton, Leeds and Burnley all battling away to remain in the posh seats next season.

Burnley will make sure they don’t stop until they get enough (points) with Michael Jackson in charge. They’ve looked much more dangerous since Sean Dyche left and they’ve got themselves into an incredible position with four games to play.

Watford led with ten minutes left and Roy looked like he might finally taste victory at Vicarage Road. It didn’t end that way - as Jack Cork and Josh Brownhill scored the two goals to move Burnley above Leeds in the table. Villa (twice) and Spurs are up before the final day visit of Newcastle to Turf Moor.

As for Frank Lampard’s Everton - a home game with Chelsea is unlikely one they had circled as “definite three points there, lads” and yet that’s exactly what they got. Cesar Azpilicueta’s mind must have been on a retirement parade in Barcelona as he gifted Richarlison an incredibly valuable winner. Mind you, if the FA have a look at the match-winner chucking a flare back into the crowd and Lampard might be down another key attacker for the remaining games.

If Everton do stay up then they will be thankful for Jordan Pickford putting in the kind of display you’d expect to see from a £30m England number one goalkeeper. Despite the recent heavy rains, the river was in a perfect tip top condition and a decent match was anticipated. This was in fact the complete opposite with the carp spawning in the reeds and this made the fishing extremely difficult. In fact, 5 anglers failed to catch which is very unusual for this stretch of river.

Clarets with a game in hand. Leicester, Watford, Brentford and Palace are up next before a last day trip to the Emirates.

As for Leeds, they didn’t win this weekend because they were playing Man City and Man City were up for it as you know, a Premier League to win and all that.

Elland Road might be special, as we are told over and over and over again - mainly be Leeds fans - and they might have been fun to watch under Bielsa too, but they are very much in a dogfight now.

They face Arsenal away, Chelsea at home, Brighton at home and on the final day go to Brentford.

As I am legendary at making predictions, obviously you want to know how I think this will play out (remember, I am not legendarily good at making said predictions - I said Palace were going down and Vieira would be sacked by Halloween). So, I can see Burnley getting seven points and finishing on 41. I can see Everton getting seven points (from five) and finishing on 39. And I can see Leeds getting five points and finishing on 39 and going down on goal difference.

Fortunately, I’ve never been popular in Leeds anyway.

The battle for 4th place is interesting too - before Arsenal and West Ham got it on, Spurs turned Leicester over 3-1 with the goals being scored by exactly who you’d expect to score the goals for Spurs. Son set up Kane before the new member of this North London boyband, Dejan Kulusevski, came off the bench to create two goals for Son. This put Spurs a point ahead of the Arsenal before Arsenal played West Ham at the Athletics Stadium. The Hammers had half a mind (again) on Thursday night and half a mind on the fact they quite fancied beating their London rivals.

And, given how defensively sound the Moysiah has made West Ham over the last two seasons, he will have not been too impressed at seeing his side concede goals from two set-pieces.

The defeat means West Ham are mathematically out of the top four chase, but we already knew that.

And Ralf Rangnick’s sterling performance as interim manager of Manchester United meant that the Austrian national team would have felt like idiots if they hadn’t tried to appoint him as National Team Manager. Despite having agreed to ‘move upstairs’ at United after his unforgettable stint in the dugout comes to an end, Rangnick has signed the deal. Having been able to do one job well for the last few months, I am very much looking forward to seeing who well he does with two.
