DISPATCHES FROM THE WORLD OF DESIGN

Back to the Future in 2018 Hindsight is 20/20 and i’m not going to say i told you so but we saw the majority of the 2017 design trends enthusiastically applied in a myriad of creative and original ways. Before proceeding to have a look at what’s coming it’s important to note that trends might imply caprice or fad so i’ll use terms such as prevailing concepts, fashionable innovations, and renewed points of view which places many of the ideas put forth here in a more fluid context as we look forward. That said, as a designer who’s been around a little while, i pause while writing this with a sense of déja vu in a reassuring way. Most of what we have observed in these articles relates to an impulse to impart comfort and style at home and perhaps this idea of trying to define what's in and what's out from year to year suggests organic adaptation over time rather than a strict change of taste. The themes we anticipate are familiar and i almost want to say classic in a way but you be the judge. i set out to offer a list of design trends for 2018 which are bundled here but ended with the realization that it’s not about specifics as much as evolution. With that in mind, i’m including some images of my project that coincidently reflect some themes we expect to visit this coming year in design, namely color, texture and mood. #Fieldnotes was conceived to provide food for thought about how space and design choices affect our overall quality of life.

We feather our nest because it’s fun and it feels good. in other words, we delight in envisioning beautiful houses and rooms and imagining where the Christmas tree will go. almost everyone i’ve ever talked with has an appreciation or even giddy interest in interior design. While not everyone has the inclination or ability to take on a design project, they at least appreciate its positive effect and the allure of a world of imagination.

We’ve touched on a few key influences and hopefully inspirations over the course of the last few articles so as we wrap up another incredible year of great ideas and individual style statements, it’s time to envision what we expect to see in the pages of Cosmopolitan Home in 2018. Clearly, some of the emerging innovations that we observed in 2017 meld with what looks to be a story about warm colors, textured surfaces, contrasting finishes, and blended styles which we’ll explore this

year. add to that interactive home technology and pristine architecture and, as spring approaches, we’ll take a look into landscape and garden design and its essential role in the setting and so much more. if i were to ask anyone what the most important or interesting topic of interior design is, invariably the answer is color and so for that reason i will elaborate on what we are seeing the most extensively. Color choice is completely subjective as well as relative to light and desired effect which is why there is an infinite range of choices but, that said, we are seeing a beautiful palette of earthy hues prevailing as backgrounds for either spicy contrast or low-key, tonal blending. as someone who dreams in color (and by that i mean about color), i’m very excited about this. Personally, i’ve always leaned towards the tertiary range which are those shades within shades that defy precise description. My apartment in Chicago has just been painted Benjamin Moore #aF-670 nightingale. i refer to it as smokey amethyst although it’s described as a grey. notes of curry, turmeric, and paprika in the furnishings will temper it’s coolness as a sophisticated neutral. These hazy ranges of color are becoming extremely popular for their mysterious qualities and tendency to transform from warm to cool according to the time of day and the colors they encompass. expect to see more rooms in a wide range of rosy taupes, diluted shades of earthy tones like clay and terra cotta and of course light to dark grey in all it’s perennial classiness. Rich punctuations borrowed from last year’s palette of more saturated colors and charcoal neutrals are completely complementary to this year’s softer palette. going hand in hand with the natural color palette are understated natural materials and finishes that are as timeless as their origins. salvaged antique stone and parquet floors from europe are readily accessible and impart warmth and pedigree in traditional adaptations or modern urban environments as do stained concrete floors. low sheen wide plank wood floors in gray and cerused stains will continue to be a popular choice for their compatibility with natural or darker stained walnut wood tones and lighter wall colors.

on the topic of fabrics, velvet is once again popular for lending texture to fashionably tonal color schemes. seen in the emerald green velvet sofas in the accompanying edition of RenoVaTe magazine, it adds glamorous decadence to a carefully edited room and lively contrast to the deep hue of the walls. it is irresistible to the touch and a welcome alternative to nubby linen. We saw a lot of pattern in 2017 and while we still love it, solids are in, especially in more pronounced textures. Yes, sleek sheers are coming back big time too. They are the minimalist window treatment of choice that complements rather than hides gorgeous windows and architecture while softly diffusing natural light and views.

Kitchens, the heart and center of home life have gotten the most dramatic treatments these last couple of years and even more daring applications prevail. Dark has finally replaced light. Veering away from the commercial look of stainless, appliances are seen in discreet gunmetal finishes that disappear into cabinets in any imaginable combination of materials and dark colors. Consider charcoal grey the new neutral in the kitchen where dramatic lighting plays a leading role to bring everything to life. neutral white kitchens are always going to be classic but with natural materials like marble or granite touches and warmer metallic finishes for hardware and plumbing fixtures. as we have seen elegant interpretations of classical architecture become more faithful to the original and with adaptive space planning and updated decoration for family lifestyles, new minimalist architectural themes as we saw in the last edition pare down all ornament to the very essence of shape and volume. The silhouettes are familiar but exquisitely simplified in their vernacular setting and offer vast opportunities to exploit vernacular natural materials.

i have often said that design well done will stand the test of time. Borrow from the past and add what you like. in this regard, i recommend to approach each decision to design, build, renovate, furnish or simply update with thoughtfulness and sensitivity. CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Financial emergencies are you ready?

The wrath of natural disasters has been on full display in recent months as hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires and floods have ravaged large swaths of the world. While our first thoughts go to the victims of these tragic events and the challenges ahead for recovery, it may also cause you to step back and think about your own preparedness for a natural disaster. if you’re feeling under prepared from a financial standpoint for the possibility of an unwelcome weather event, consider creating an emergency plan.

CReaTe a Plan Just as you plan ahead for your retirement or children’s college tuition, you need to prepare for risks related to a financial emergency. any type of unforeseen event could jeopardize your financial security.

Work with your financial advisor, estate planner and attorney to identify and address potential financial risks.

PRoTeCT YouR PRoPeRTY one common concern in such events is catastrophic damage to your home. start by making sure your property is appropriately insured.

Review your homeowner’s insurance policy to make sure there is sufficient coverage for unforeseen events. Remember that typical home insurance does not include coverage for flood damage, which needs to be purchased separately. Home owners may assume they are not at risk of such damage, but unusual circumstances might mean your risk is greater than you think, so it’s best to double check. Those who rent their living space should consider renter’s insurance to protect property.

in the case of disasters like a flood or tornado, you want to make sure you have sufficient coverage for possessions, including valuables, vehicles (e.g. cars, boats, aTVs), and technology. Maintain good records of the valuable items you own and keep them in a safe place. it can be helpful to take pictures of your property before an event occurs as well as after to help you in the insurance claims process.

esTaBlisH YouR eMeRgenCY FunD a general rule of thumb is to have at least three-to-six months’ worth of expenses saved in case of an emergency. Consider saving more if you have children or live in an area where severe weather threats are

more common. Keep these funds in accounts that offer liquidity like a money market fund or in bank savings. Make sure you have some cash on hand in case power outages or other issues prevent aTMs from working.

The money you set aside could be used for temporary housing, medical care or to cover your essential expenses if you’re unable to return to work. The funds can also jump-start your relief and clean-up efforts.

saFeguaRD YouR FinanCial inFoRMaTion When unanticipated events occur, you will need access to your financial information and personal identification documents. store copies of your insurance policies, financial account statements, medical information, social security cards, driver’s licenses, passports and other important records in a secure location such as a bank safety deposit box or a secure electronic vault. Having documentation readily available allows you to quickly verify your identity and work through your emergency plan after disaster strikes.

CHARM DoWnsizing Doesn’T neeD To Be a saCRiFiCe as Julie and Chuck Frayer know first hand. living in east grand Rapids for 31 years, they are accustomed to a fierce sense of community pride, a devotion to family, and access to a vibrant city. The Frayer’s children are now grown and flown as the saying goes, but this couple certainly did not want to give up all that egR has to offer; they wanted a place that could suit their new lifestyle and needs.

The front exterior, with materials from eikenhout, has a welcoming porch and grand door while the back entrance has an inviting appeal all its own. Crisp, clean landscaping frames the home ideally. The detached garage, with doors from overhead Door Co., matches the main facade seamlessly.

The Frayers found the perfect property on Lakeside Drive, first discovered by J. Peterson Homes. With a new design by architectural designer Jeff Visser and interior designer Mary Dixon of Dixon Interior Design, as well as the design team at Tru Kitchens, a formerly sad and neglected house was torn down and turned into a new classic that is modern and fresh.

This was truly a collaborative effort from start to finish. Mary Dixon and Julie are friends who have worked together before. “My job is to make the house a home,” said Mary. She did this by using “warm, soft colors with black accents for drama.”

The mood upon entering the mud room is light and comfortable, a result not of happenstance, but of attention to key design elements. Natural light streams into the home, highlighting the built-ins and the coat area. The nine-foot ceilings create an inviting openness. Off to the left is a perfectly placed laundry room tucked behind grey, unobtrusive barn doors which add a touch of rustic flair. In the laundry room, we first see the common window treatment found throughout the house purposefully designed to allow maximum privacy while maintaining a view of the trees and sky. Plantation shutters, half the height of the windows themselves, allow light to pour into the room. Of note in this room is the floor, a commercial vinyl product from Miliken — extremely durable, but offering high end style.

Down the hall is where the Frayers like to relax at the end of the day. It’s a perfectly proportioned den/TV room with built-ins, custom fit to house Chuck’s fishing reels and rods. While Julie and Chuck relax, Crash and the cats are also resting on the neutral carpeting, lovely, and familiar.

Across the hall is one of the favorite features of the home, just ask the Frayer’s grandkids. The half bath, with modern tasteful appointments has

Monkeys fly through the garden pattern with the greatest of ease. Another nice feature of the half bath is a window that needs no treatment due to the position and privacy offered.

The kitchen is nothing less than a masterpiece.

The Shiloh cabinetry in both polar-white, painted maple, and heather stone gray tones, give the kitchen a fresh look. The Sub-Zero refrigerator features a custom stainless design and finished door panels. A local stainless artist, Steve Fidler of Fidler Furniture, created this statement piece.

Etched stainless panels also grace some upper kitchen cabinetry to add texture and warmth to the room. Kitchen pulls are a mixture of metal and crystal. Tile work, counter tops, and kitchen finishes are a combination of marble, granite, and wood. The floors are an oil-rubbed bronze

oak. Mixed media light fixtures throughout create interest and add a modern flair. A small, open-shelved, desk space finishes the kitchen, adding warmth and dimension.

Opposite the kitchen is the living area. Nestled around the fireplace is a cozy sofa with bright accent pillows, a couple of chairs, and in the middle, a large ottoman to house a drink, a book, or even a pair of feet. Custom built-ins on the wall feature new accents pieces as well as treasures from the family home. The balance of texture and color make the pieces work together seamlessly. The adjacent space has a dining table for a more formal sit-down meal highlighted by custom window treatments. The entire home is furnished with a mixture of modern, traditional, and antique pieces and artwork. The overall feel is pretty but not fussy. The common thread is that the pieces are well loved.

Upstairs offers a small sitting area for reading, the owner suite, two bedrooms, and a guest bath.

The finishes, including marble countertops and penny round tiles, are tasteful and elegant. One of the more extravagant features is the chandelier hanging over the free-standing, owner bath tub.

The lower level includes several unique elements.

To maximize space and functionality, J. Peterson Homes utilized the space below the front porch, turning it into a workout room. Anyone who has their treadmill hiding in the guest bedroom can attest to how nice it would be to have a workout room as a separate entity. The structure under the porch was skillfully reinforced and waterproofed offering maximization of every square inch.

The rest of the lower level is the perfect place to host the kids and their families. The inviting main room has a fireplace, a TV, and a huge sectional sofa. Behind that is a wet bar area complete with all the comforts of home, making trips to the grandparents house a welcome treat. The lower level is completed with a bedroom, a spacious full bath, and a luxurious steam shower.

On home lots that are limited in size, as is often the case in East Grand Rapids remodels, the

Rook’s Landscaping has created a way to transform the basement window wells, often an eyesore, into a focal point of the landscaping. Not only do these features feel open, they offer privacy in a purposeful way that incorporates plants that need minimal care but provide pleasant visual interest.

A retreat by definition is a quiet and secluded place where one can rest. A retreat doesn’t have to be far from home. In the Frayer’s case, it is home. ❂

uilding a new home can be exciting— and a challenge. Some homeowners are used to the process and know all the ins and outs. But for others, it can be daunting, especially when working under a strict deadline.

Jeff and Sue Berlin bought a small structure in the fall of 2004 as a summer cottage. "It was a small home, just three bedrooms, and two baths, and it was tired," said Sue. "It was built in 1955 or around then, and had been added onto in 1984,” added Jeff. “We started talking about selling our home and moving out here permanently, but, that became unrealistic as we got older. For one reason, there was a narrow spiral staircase to the second floor and a second remodel wasn't feasible, and even if it were, the foundation was crumbling, and the home was slowly sinking.

That's when we decided to build new."

The Berlins chose to work with a builder they had known for many years, that had done some "fixerupper" projects in the old structure. Unfortunately, a plethora of problems came to a head just as the

Berlins were leaving for Florida forcing them to find another builder. But whom? Interior Designer Laura Davidson of Dwellings Interior Design to the rescue. Dwellings Design Studio is a full-service boutique interior design firm that specializes in entire homes, home remodels, individual room designs, furnishings, and accessories.

Laura had worked with the Berlins in the past so when Jeff asked her, “Who in the world are we going to get now?” Laura knew an ideal fit.

“Laura said, ‘Go on vacation, I'll take care of it,” remembered Sue. “'I'll find you somebody.' Well, she found us someone!”

That someone was Keith Potter of Keith Potter Builder, Inc. Keith has been a builder for 28 years, the last 14 on his own.

A builder is only as good as his subcontractors, and Keith has built a great team. "I have my guys that I call on that are very loyal to me, and I'm very loyal to them,” said Keith. “They do quality conscious work and always have the client’s best interest on the forefront. I promote a team atmosphere and have a great carpentry crew that works side by side with me. We emphasize organization to keep our schedule on track.”

He's hands-on, wearing the tool belt, and he has some great ideas and is very creative.”

“One day we had a huge windstorm,” remembered Jeff, “and it started ripping out the tar paper that was under the floor. The County Sheriff stopped by to see what was going on, thinking the wind was blowing down the house!"

According to Laura, architect Kerry Fitzpatrick drew up the original plans for the home. But, not everyone is as adept as Laura when it comes to reading blueprints.

“I made a point of it to come over and talk to all the contractors,” said Jeff. “I'd ask ‘Okay, how do you like working for Keith?' It was the same comment from every one of them. ‘Very much because he's honest, he's on time, and on schedule when he says he's going be.'”

The first thing the Berlins did was have Habitat for Humanity's ReStore come and take every piece that could be reused or recycled. Windows, doors, and even the floor were ripped out.

“We were living in the small apartment in our garage/storage building across the street” said Sue. “It was an eyesore blocking our view of Green Lake."

“But Keith was great,” said Sue. “He walked us through the design, even going out to the old patio and drawing with chalk to give us a better idea of how it would look.”

“We discussed the Berlins' wish list, and what they wanted on the property, so we were constantly making tweaks to the design," said Laura.

But before the house could go up, a lot of engineering had to happen. The house is built on a bog, and footings and pylons had to be installed before construction could begin. Jeff explained that the neighbor had to jack his house up seven

inches just the summer before, emphasizing this was a critical step.

Two things were important to Sue: The home had to take advantage of the beautiful view of Green Lake and, it had to be open and inviting as the couple does a lot of entertaining. And, from Laura's perspective, the home had to look bright and fresh, be family-friendly, and have a timeless feel.

“... the foundation was crumbling, and the home was slowly sinking. That's when we decided to build new."

The property sits on a long lot with 85 feet of frontage. There's a mere ten feet of easement between the house and the ones on either side because the Berlins wanted to put as much house on the lot as possible, this also meant building up, and out toward the lake.

Inside, the home is open and inviting. The entryway, living room, dining area, and kitchen are one large area where the Berlins could entertain fifty people with little problem.

The home makes a statement from the moment you walk in. Instead of a hall closet in the entry way, Laura designed a big front entry where six people can stand with ease. Beautiful silver wall hooks and padded benches with drawers hold coats and boots and the like. But what hits the eye upon entry is the large living room picture window that looks out over Green Lake. No houses

Taupe walls and white recessed ceilings give the living room an even larger feel. Blues and yellows are predominant colors for furnishings and accent pieces and the floors are *ceruse white oak. Large area rugs anchor each space.

Adjacent to the living room is the dining area, centered by a 78-inch round dining table with seating for eight. Again, neutral tones and natural light, as well as a recessed ceiling and custom chandelier make the large space seem even larger.

"We had to drop ceilings for soffits for all the heating and cooling, so we developed this ceiling to exactly center on the dining table, and then we developed the same unusual design in the

framing to fit exactly over our fireplace. It has that subtle “X” theme that you'll find throughout the home. The nuances of design are what makes this feel cohesive," notes Laura.

A pair of French doors near the dining table lead to a delightful addition to the home: A three season porch. Overhead space heaters keep it warm and toasty, making it a great place to watch Michigan State football on the TV mounted in the corner.

"I wanted a full deck across the length of the house,” said Sue. “But Jeff was adamant about a screened porch. I'm glad he was because I love it — I've spent every October evening out here."

A door from the porch opens to a large cement patio where twelve can dine comfortably or gather around the natural gas fire pit. Jeff loves to cook, and it's an integral part of outdoor entertaining. Laura pointed out that everything is simple to take care of. "We were going for easy care so the siding, the decking, the flooring — everything we tried to do is easy maintenance.”

For a house that doesn't have a huge footprint, it does have a generous kitchen. Centered by a quartz countertop island that seats four, Keith built and painted the beautiful cabinetry that fits the space precisely. No fillers and the insides are as beautiful as the outside. And, the "X" pattern found in the ceiling, is subtly repeated in the cabinetry. In keeping with the large scale of the kitchen, two substantial lights hang above the island.

A small hallway, paneled in 54-inch-high white panels, includes the staircase to the upper level and a black, sliding door that opens to a well-appointed laundry room that stores everything from the vacuum to the dogs' beds.

"Scale is everything, so lighting fixtures are probably one of the hardest things to find,” said Laura.

“In this room, being so big, you couldn't have tiny little lights. You need to have a ton of presence.

"I'm also a big fan of mixing metals, but it's how you mix them,” she continued. “In the kitchen alone, there are many different metals. We've got polished nickel, chrome, the black hardware, and then we throw in a teeny bit more of a bronze tone. It's interesting because on paper you wouldn't know that it works, but it works.

On the other hand, in this house, there are probably six paint colors total. I like to keep a very simplistic palette."

On the opposite side of the living room is a small hallway, paneled in the same 54-inch high white panels as the entryway, which also continues up the staircase. A striking feature in the hallway is an impressive black sliding barn door that opens to reveal what the Berlins refer to as "the barn," a huge open space that holds everything from coats to the vacuum to the dogs' beds. Laura notes that the black door is a fun design element because it is an interior door painted.

“You can get a lot of design credit for painting an interior door color,” said Laura. “I love to add our barn doors in a different color, or stain, or whatever, just because it makes them pop and feel acquired and found.”

The hall continues to the garage, which is heated and has epoxy floors. Just inside the door to the house is a series of cubbies and seagrass baskets, so guests can simply place their things in a cubby and head to the lake. If guests want to change, the laundry room, hidden behind a second barn door is right there, and sandy, dirty bathing suits and beach towels can go into the washer, instead of trailing a mess through the home.

At the top of the stairs is a "landing zone," another historic home feature made modern.

Many older homes have a landing area at the top of the stairs instead of a hallway. Even though there is a large computer desk, there is still plenty of room to comfortably walk through to the other upstairs rooms. A second laundry room on this level allows for ease of clean sheets and towels without loaded trips up and down stairs.

In addition to the two guest bedrooms is a unique bonus room, also known as their granddaughter's playroom. A comfy sofa and chairs 36 | winter 2017

make it a great place to hang out and watch television. Twin beds on each side of the room, between the dormer windows offer a place for a quick nap, whether you're a human or a dog.

Under the beds are drawers that pull out for toy storage, and there's even a small sink and drawers for storing—and cleaning up—paints, markers, and other mess-making fun.

Rounding out the rooms upstairs is the owner bedroom. Peaceful, serene and inviting, the room offers another striking view of the lake.

Toward the foot of the bed, an alcove, naturally created due to the roof lines is the perfect place to tuck away a chest of drawers; a welcome change from built-ins.

An en suite bathroom has his and her sinks in a quartz countertop, a glass shower with custom tile, which Keith designed to fit precisely under the roofline. And, off the bathroom is a wonderful walk-in closet that is a tribute to the ingenuity of Laura and Keith, as it is accessible from the landing area as well.

"When framing on the fly, we decided to make the closet two feet wider, by taking away two feet from the guest bedroom, which doesn't have to be as large,” said Laura. “That extra two feet made all the difference in this room. We were able to do an island now, and put in the second door."

The three season porch includes overhead space heaters to keep it warm and toasty on late autumn or early spring evenings. Laura saw the opening and said, ‘Keep it!'” said Keith. “It makes sense, Sue can take clothes from the laundry area right into her closet without going through the bedroom, and Jeff can shower, get dressed and leave without disturbing Sue. Whenever you're framing, it's an exciting part of a build, but you have to have the vision to make sure things fit, as well as make adjustments on the fly."

Rounding out the upstairs rooms is another bathroom.

Again, because of the slanting roofline, adjustments had to be made, in this case, the door to a deep storage area. The top is perfectly angled, but instead of swinging open to find things buried in the back, the entire unit pulls forward, allowing easy access to all three shelves.

"Working with Laura is well … she's awesome,” said Keith.

“By having most of the selections made early on, it enables us to get products ordered in advance which allows us to stay on schedule and budget so we can ensure accurate pricing.”

Laura had nothing but praise for Keith. "We've known each other for a long time, and Keith has done years of work for me and with me. For him to be able to just step into a project like this is amazing."

"The first time we met Keith at the beginning of January, we were totally at ease and had complete confidence in him,” said Jeff. “He was here every day. He's not just a supervisor.

He's hands-on, wearing the tool belt, and he has some great ideas and is very creative."

"Well, we shouldn't be too modest about Laura either,” added Keith. “She is the one that puts it all together and gives the design. With her, we do a great job of putting things together at the beginning so there are no surprises; therefore we stay on track, not only schedule-wise but also as far as the budget, which is just as important.” ❂
