Show Off Your Style with Cambria Quartz

WHETHER YOUR PERSONAL STYLE is classic and cool or bold and dramatic, Cambria and Standale Home Studio can help you express it. The kitchen is often the hub of the home and where people gather, so you want it to be beautiful and reflect your personal taste, but it also has to be functional. If you are planning a new kitchen or remodeling an existing space, choosing the right countertop might be the most important decision you make. Here are some things to take into consideration. Why Cambria Quartz is a Great Choice Quartz is one of the hardest surfaces on earth, making it virtually indestructible. It is naturally scratch and stain resistant, is very easy to clean and maintain, and doesn’t require any sealant. So, functionality is definitely covered. But you also want your countertops to be beautiful. You want them to tell a story and evoke a feeling. The natural beauty of quartz provides so much variety in color and movement, your options are practically endless. If you’re looking for a classic style in a light color with flecks of sparkle, a bold and earthy wave pattern or a deep, dark color with dramatic highlights, you can find it in Cambria’s wide range of colors. And if you need some design inspiration, the designers at Standale Home Studio are there to help. The amount of actual quartz that goes into a product varies greatly by manufacturer, and Cambria boasts one of the highest concentrations of pure quartz available. Cambria sources quartz from their company-owned mine and the value of the land and the resources it provides guide their process every step of the way. From the power and water used to the design and tooling of the product, sustainability is a top priority. And because Cambria is American made and family owned, you can count of the safety and quality standards that you might not get from similar products manufactured abroad. Cambria quartz countertops are available through Standale Home Studio and distributed by Lumbermen’s Inc. so you can count on local service and personalized attention throughout your project. Perfect for Any Décor Whether your kitchen is small and compact or sprawling, Cambria countertops can elevate any space to a whole new level. The range and variation of colors, textures and movement can bring visual appeal to any surface, from a small kitchen island to cascading countertops. If you are one to design outside the box, quartz shelves or a dramatic backsplash can instantly create a focal point. When it comes to uses and applications of quartz, you are only limited by your imagination.

American Made and Family Owned When looking for the right countertop, there are a lot of options out there. Because quartz is available in so many color variations, it can compare to and closely resemble other products such a marble or granite. However, quartz is a naturally occurring stone, so it is abundant and highly sustainable. And because it is a hard, non-porous surface, it doesn’t need to be sealed and won’t harbor dangerous and odor causing bacteria.

Planning and Design There are many resources available to help you plan your perfect project. Starting with Standale Home Studio, you can get expert advice from designers who can help you create your vision in their new state-of-the-art studio. So if a new kitchen is in your future, consider Cambria quartz countertops for durable, functional surfaces with timeless beauty.

CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Secure Your Financial Future After Divorce

THERE'S NO DOUBT ABOUT IT – going through a divorce can be an emotionally trying time. In addition to the emotional impact a divorce can have, it can also take a significant toll on finances. If you have recently gone through a divorce, now may be a good time to take a fresh look at your financial situation. Consider how these steps may help you get on firmer footing:

ance policies, retirement accounts, annuities, and bank or brokerage accounts you may have in place. This is also a good time to make a will or update your existing one to reflect your new status. Make sure that your former spouse isn't still named as a personal representative, successor trustee, beneficiary, or holder of a power of attorney in any of your estate planning documents.

Adjust your budget: A good place to start is to establish a budget that reflects your current monthly income and expenses. Calculate your new monthly income, including spousal or child support if applicable, and estimate what you expect to earn over the next year. If you are a stay-at-home parent or spouse, you may decide to re-enter the workforce to bolster your income. Or the time may be right to switch careers or seek a higher-paying job.

Prioritize saving for retirement: No matter how close – or far – you are to retirement, make it a priority to update your retirement goals and continue building your nest egg. While retirement saving can feel overwhelming as you balance competing financial priorities, having a plan can help you feel more in control.

Next, look at your spending to see if you need to adjust your patterns. Whether you’ve decided to remain in your home or seek new living arrangements, crunch the numbers to see how much house you can realistically afford. Also, evaluate your lifestyle spending to see if it’s necessary to trim your expenses. If possible, avoid making any major purchases until you feel comfortable with your updated budget. Consider your children’s future: If you have children, they will understandably take center stage in your planning. It’s important to start thinking about how you’ll handle future financial milestones. Milestones may include paying for private grade school, college tuition or a wedding. If you’d like to help your children with such expenses, consider these questions: Will you receive financial support from your former spouse? Do you expect your kids to contribute? As each event approaches, be up front with your kids about what you can afford so they can set realistic expectations. Ensure you’re protected: An important step following divorce is to maintain, replace or establish insurance that will help secure your financial future. All forms of insurance should be reviewed and considered. Make sure you understand the specific benefits that you and your former spouse are entitled to, as well as the life, health and disability insurance policies that you both own through your employers. If you have children, whose health insurance plan will be used to cover them? Work quickly to establish an insurance plan to avoid financial risk of being uninsured. Change your beneficiary designations: After a divorce, you'll want to change the beneficiary designations on any life insur-

Dream and plan for the future: Once you have a handle on your new day-to-day finances and retirement, allow yourself to dream and plan for other milestones that are important to you. While you were married, you may have set certain financial goals with your spouse. Now that you are on your own, these goals may have changed. Do you wish to travel abroad? Go back to school? Open a small business? Whatever your dreams, determine the cost of each one so you know how much you’ll need to save. Save what you can each month, and keep in mind that even small amounts will add up over time. If you’re tempted to spend the money elsewhere, consider establishing a separate savings account. Don’t go it alone: Professional guidance from an attorney, tax professional, estate planner and financial advisor can ease the burden of managing your finances. It’s hard to start over, but you can do it. A financial advisor can help you with the complex decisions you face during a divorce and offer strategies you get on track to meet your new financial goals. ❂

Cozy Up

by DeGraaf Interiors

for the Holidays DECORATING FOR THE SEASON and creating special memories will enhance the feeling of your home, but having a cozy and inviting foundation will make your space feel comfortable for the holidays and beyond. With most of us spending more time at home, an attractive environment can facilitate a calmer mood. Colors and textures have an impact on our mindset, so try to create a space that sets the right tone. Here are some significant changes to your home that can do just that: High-Impact, Low-Maintenance Countertops There’s no time like the holidays to realize that time spent in the kitchen look of your kitchen, but it can also make clean-up time easier. While laminate countertops are the usual go-to option for minimal maintenance, other solid surface countertops like quartz and granite have come a long way. Quartz countertops are durable, and can include stain resistant, acid resistant, and impact and scratch resistant features. Granite countertops are naturally durable, with resistance to moisture, heat, and abrasion. But, if laminate still seems like the best choice, it just might be. Laminate countertops can take on the look of granite, marble, and even wood, while maintaining the benefits of laminate — giving you the best of both worlds with beauty and resilience. Explore our countertop photo gallery to see how an update could enhance the look and function of your kitchen for all of that holiday cooking and baking!

with your purchase. Not only that, but choosing the right carpet pad will help preserve the look and extend your carpet’s life by protecting against wear. Request a free inhome measure to make sure your carpet can be updated just in time for the holidays! Keep Things Classic With Hardwood Floors Hardwood floors are timeless. They’ll never go out of style. New varieties of hardwood flooring and faux wood floors using luxury vinyl plank make the options nearly endless. Almost any look can be achieved using hardwood and luxury vinyl flooring, so the best way to approach this flooring style is to make a wish-list. (Perfect for the holidays!) Considerations for choosing the right wood flooring: • Are you ok with a little TLC, or do you want low-maintenance? • Do you want a real wood appearance, or is consistency more important? • Do imperfections bother you, or do they add to the charm? Hardwood floors typically have more imperfections and require a bigger upfront investment, but add more value to your home. Luxury vinyl plank — sometimes called luxury vinyl tile (lvt) — can mimic hardwood so closely that many can’t tell the difference. People often refer to lvt as waterproof wood flooring because it looks just like wood but is resistant to water damage as well as stains and scratches. Luxury vinyl plank, a close cousin, is quickly growing in popularity, and is available in a wide range of options. Visit a DeGraaf Interiors showroom to see just how many! Whichever option you decide on, hardwood flooring not only creates a beautiful, lasting impression - but it offers lasting value. In fact, in a national survey, 90 percent of real estate agents said that houses with wood flooring sell faster and for more money. By acting right away, you can have a beautiful hardwood floor just in time for the holidays!

Makeover Your Fireplace Most fireplaces are made traditionally with bricks. While this has made sense for centuries, there are many new materials at our disposal that can upgrade the look of your fireplace to be more modern and better suit the look and feel of your home. Most notable of these materials is tile. Tile is so versatile that it can take on the appearance of almost any material. Apply tile to your fireplace to take on the look of natural stone, or try a more bold look like subway tile to make an even bigger statement. View our tile fireplace gallery for ideas and to see how warm and inviting an updated tile fireplace might look in your home for the holidays! Plush Carpeting That’s Made For Walking and Sitting You don’t know what you’re missing until you feel the comfort of walking across a soft, plush carpet. If sensory experience and texture is important to you, a carpet upgrade might be just what you need. And let’s face it — whether it’s a room full of guests or a rambunctious group of kids —at one point or another during the holiday season, someone will end up sitting on the floor. What most people don’t know is that selecting the perfectly soft carpet you want isn’t always going to give you that cozy feeling you desire. Without the correct carpet cushion beneath, you will likely be disappointed

Most Importantly - Have A Blessed Holiday Season! Whether you choose to make a significant update to the look of your home, upgrade your decorating game, or adopt a new family tradition, the most important thing to do this holiday season is relax, spend time with your loved ones, and take into account what we are grateful for. It’s been a crazy year, but there is so much to be thankful for. From all of us at DeGraaf Interiors, we wish you a very merry — and cozy — holiday season, and a brighter new year! MODERN TEXT BY LYNN BAKEMAN IMAGES BY ASHLEY AVILA

M

Many people are happy with the status quo, while others are ready for a transition in life. The young family who built this home did their research and chose principal and architect Eric De Witt and architect Dana Grassmid of Lucid Architecture to shake things up. They were leaving behind a more traditional home and Eric’s award-winning firm took the lead. “Modern design is our native design language and one we speak fluently; the homeowners came to us ready and willing to embrace those concepts.” The homeowners had driven by one of Lucid Architecture’s homes and noted, “Their eye-catching design stands out among the typical Western Michigan homes and brought our car to a standstill. We followed their work on social media over several years admiring the clean lines and simplicity of modern design. Once we were prepared to build, we knew they would design our home.” Embracing any home on this particular non-conforming lot would be tricky. As Dana explained, “Site analysis is critical to how our home design engages with the topography. We devote a lot of time to understanding the constraints and environmental characteristics of the land before we even begin designing the home.” This site had an extremely tight footprint, so Lucid had to get a variance and approvals to work their magic. This included mitigating and managing significant slopes — both side-to-side and front to back toward the lake — which involved building a large retaining wall. Building up was the only option and modern design was perfect for this. As fate would have it, this resulted in this home’s distinctive and stunning cantilevered entrance. Respectful of a neighboring home, the windows and living space are oriented toward either a park or lake view.

The home’s distinctive cantilevered entrance includes cedar on the soffit of the armature that forms the home’s dramatic front entry. Cedar was strategically placed to add inviting warmth anywhere the home is accessed. It covers the porch ceiling and walls, and adds depth to the water-view side of the home. The exterior also features corrugated metal stretching horizontally — a surprisingly low-maintenance element. Cement board siding provides a neutral backdrop to the dramatic application of vertical cedar boards. The pristine landscaping by Landscape Design Services, complements the modern design.

16 | early winter 2020

“Many of us at Lucid love the outdoors and believe that designing homes that have connections to it are important to the wellbeing of its users,” Dana continued. By considering the site’s unique features and how the sun interacts with interior spaces, we incorporated expansive views of Pigeon Lake, especially upon entry and from key spaces within, as a critical way to connect this home to its setting. We did 3-D exterior and interior modeling work so the clients were comfortable with how their future home spaces would feel.” “Honestly, the design is exactly how we pictured it,” added the homeowner. “It didn’t hurt that very early on in the design process with Lucid, they provided several renderings on the final project. I’m a visual person so this was perfect for me.” Firmly engaged with their home’s modern design, the homeowners clicked with Rod Obbink of Holland-based Rod Obbink Builders, Inc. and selected interior designer Amanda Huizenga of Amanda Christine Design to execute a cohesive look inside the home.

“Working with something non-conventional like a contemporary house dictates its own challenges,” commented Rod. “The architecture was structurally engineered and well spelled out with quite a bit of steel within the confines of the superstructure, but it was kind of fun doing something different than what we normally do.” Rod did his research and approached the build with his typical desire to execute the design to the highest standards. “Lucid” means expressed clearly or suffused with light, both perfectly descriptive of the architectural language spoken by Eric’s firm. He explained, “Our Lucid approach often relies on steel to create that little bit of magic that happens from long spans of glass with maximum openings that just can’t be achieved with a woodframed structure.” Lucid selected durable corrugated metal stretching horizontally as a surprising low-maintenance exterior element that grounds the home. Cement board siding provides a neutral backdrop to the dramatic application of vertical cedar boards.

The great room is anchored by a custom concrete fireplace with reveals engineered by Hard Topix, a Jenison company that echoed a similar design in the kitchen range hood. The polished concrete floors with exposed aggregate are naturally decorative and impervious to damage and root the home with a solid organic feel. The clean lines of the fumishings from The Home Studio complete the intended design beautifully.

Cedar is also strategically placed to add inviting warmth anywhere the home is accessed. It figures predominantly on the soffit of the armature that forms the home’s dramatic front entry, on the porch ceiling and walls, and adds depth to the water-view side of the home. Despite the narrow lot boundaries, the Lucid architects were able to open up the interior to three levels that accommodate an active family who enjoys water recreation and entertaining. A solid walnut tread floating stairway was strategically situated inside the front corner of the home to filter natural light into the living spaces as well as allow for visual connection out to the adjacent park. A custom, hot-rolled steel door opens into the middle level of this home which immediately offers panoramic views of the lake through floor-to-ceiling windows. Eric and Dana keyed in the general

flavor and architectural direction of the interior, then handed it off to Amanda to run with it. Amanda explains her approach: “Working on modern home design felt fresh; the architectural details were so clean and the textures and details so interesting, that I felt inspired to add to that statement.” Both of the homeowners liked the appeal of the crisp white backdrop with bold pops of color that add so much personality to each room of the house. Amanda used her 3-D drawing programs to design the cabinetry which then led into many of the other selections and details. “We could not have done this project without the help and guidance of Amanda,” stated the homeowner. “She was in on it from the very beginning helping with design and layout, and to the very end picking out furniture, accessories, and everything in between. This was critical since we were starting over with a completely different design

Walnut cabinetry takes center stage in the kitchen. The beautiful grain is balanced by the clean lines of the pendant lights, a white waterfall quartz island from Duca Tile and the reflective glass tile walls that reach the ceiling. A custom spalted maple dining table is surrounded by Herman Miller Eames chairs giving the room a playful pop of color. Another focal point in this room is the walnut-trimmed coffee and beverage bar that serves the main floor area. A hot-rolled steel door opens into the home’s foyer where panoramic views of the lake are unavoidable through floor-to-ceiling windows. style compared to our previous house. We knew what we were drawn to, but her leading us there was exactly what we needed. She offered great guidance but also took into consideration some of our ideas as well. It was a perfect mix!” One of the most impactful features of this home is the detailed craftsmanship of the cabinetry found throughout, courtesy of Van Enk Woodcrafters. Father and son team, David and Ben Van Enk, blend old-world artistry with the latest technology to produce custom wood projects of some of the highest quality and value available. Another interesting design statement is directly underfoot. Commonly used in commercial applications, polished concrete floors with exposed aggregate are naturally decorative and impervious to damage and root the home with a solid organic feel.

“Every space has purpose and is meaningful for its intended users. To achieve this mission, everyone at Lucid takes the time to get to know our clients; how they live, and also what gets them excited and that information frames our designs.” – Dana Grassmid, Lucid Architecture Lucid accommodated the extra loading in the structural design and actually poured the concrete floors on top of the wood structure rather than the more commercial approach over a full steel structure. This allowed for a more cost efficient application that integrated easily with radiant heat used throughout the home. These did create construction sequencing challenges for Rod, such as when to pour the concrete, frame in the walls, complete the finish work, then polish the concrete. Additionally, cold weather made for challenging pours and they had to watch carefully for stress cracks, but Rod worked carefully with his contractors to efficiently manage the project. The great room is anchored by a custom concrete fireplace with reveals engineered by Hard Topix, a Jenison company that Amanda used to echo a similar design in the kitchen range hood. Amanda let the warm elements of Van Enk Woodcrafters’ masterful walnut grain work take center stage in the kitchen. She balanced the strong elements of concrete and wood with the clean lines of the pendant lights, a white waterfall quartz island and reflective glass tile walls that reach the ceiling.

A custom spalted maple dining room table is a beautiful statement piece. Spalting is sought by woodworkers for its unique coloration and patterning caused by fungi, beetles, or other environmental stressors. The table is surrounded by Herman Miller Eames chairs giving the room a playful pop of color. Uplighting around the ceiling edge and a unique sculptural lighting piece gives the open space a nice boundary. Another focal point in this room is a walnut-trimmed coffee bar that serves the main floor area. The home’s trim work is quite striking. “We incorporated a flush base with a reveal detail,” explained Dana. “Typically baseboards are applied to the face of the wall. Because this base is flush, there's not a lot of tolerance so it requires extra work from Rod to get things just right. The reveal also adds a little shadow that draws attention to it; it’s a really sharp look that fits in with the rest of the modern design of the home.” Rod adds, “Because it’s such a clean look, it seems like it may be simpler, but it’s actually quite a bit more difficult because you have no tolerances for moving things around especially with drywall connections and near doorways and windows. Lucid Architecture’s forte is contemporary homes, so they did a good job detailing out the trim specifications and they are a very user-friendly firm. They were always willing to help us in any kind of little

The top floor was designated for the family’s bedrooms creating a very private level. Right-sized rooms each have a strong outdoor connection. In the Jack-and-Jill bathroom connecting the children’s bedrooms, Hard Topix formed a concrete trough sink and countertop. Custom metal mirrors float from counter to ceiling and reflect the bold tile work in the shower. Walnut bedroom furniture in the owner’s suite with its rich color is carried into the ensuite bathroom in cabinets and builtins. details that we thought would be important to the client and so that everybody’s expectation levels were met.” Just off the great room is a porch cleverly notched into the building envelope. “Because of the building restrictions and the fact that we had to build right up to that setback line off the water side of the house, we couldn’t construct an exterior deck or build stairs coming down off the back of the house,” noted Eric. “We had many discussions about how to facilitate that connection to the waterfront activities. We achieved much of that with open window expanses and by carving that space out of the main floor living space.” The top floor of the home was designated for the family’s bedrooms creating a very private level. The home’s lower level serves as an entertainment hub. With immediate outdoor access to the lake, hot tub, and built-in fire pit, many of the home’s conveniences are located here including a well-stocked wet bar that frames the room with brilliant blue cabinetry. This cheerful sonic blue color scheme is continued in the additional lakeside laundry room and lower level bathroom with its vivid floor-to-ceiling tile and crisp white floating vanity.

In the Jack-and-Jill bathroom connecting the children’s bedrooms, Amanda and the homeowner selected materials that reflect that childhood is fleeting, and this room will still suit the boys as they age. Hard Topix also formed the concrete trough sink and countertop, and Amanda had custom metal mirrors made that float from counter to ceiling. The home’s lower level is not an afterthought since it serves as an important family and entertainment hub. With immediate outdoor access to the lake, hot tub, and built-in fire pit, many home conveniences are located here including a well-stocked wet bar that frames the room with brilliant blue cabinetry. This cheerful sonic blue color scheme is continued in the additional lakeside laundry room and in the bathroom with its vivid floor-to-ceiling tile and crisp white floating vanity. The attributes, form and function of this home are a perfect fit for this active, young family. Dana summarizes this accomplishment saying, “Open, airy, and unobstructed spaces, something found often in modern designs, are modeled here in the social areas of the home. Not only were our clients attracted to the appearance and feel provided by this openness, it allows for spaces to appear larger, more natural light to penetrate in, and ease communication and family connectedness across rooms.” ❂

Where, Oh Where Do I Start? Questions Answered for a Successful Kitchen Remodel I’VE HEARD HORROR STORIES ABOUT KITCHEN REMODELING PROJECTS…ARE THEY TRUE? Yes. Unfortunately, some of them are. But in our experience, most of them are the result of a few avoidable situations. 1) A failure to communicate; A number of people are involved in the project so excellent communication is a must. 2) Inexperienced or incompetent designer or remodeling contractor. 3) Unanticipated problem with the structure. This is often the case with older homes but unanticipated problems can come up with some newer homes as well. HOW MUCH DOES A KITCHEN REMODEL COST? With every kitchen remodel project being unique, that is a tough question to answer. So our best answer is “that depends” or to be more precise; somewhere between $5,000 and $100,000. There are many variables that come into play. The scope of the project, material costs, size and number of cabinets in the kitchen, etc.

The Designer: The designer is the person who actually designs the layout for your kitchen. This is the person who ultimately determines if you end up with a great kitchen, a mediocre one, or even a bad one. Make sure you are comfortable with your kitchen designer… is he/she experienced? Have your best interests in mind? Friendly. Does he/she listen to what you say? The Supplier: The supplier supplies the products for the project. You’ll want to consider the combination of quality, selection, service, and price and choose the supplier that combines them to give you the most value.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? That will depend on the scope of the project. If it’s a small kitchen and it is a simple remove and replace cabinets and install new laminate countertops, it might take two to three days once all the products are delivered. But if it’s an extensive remodel with structural changes that need to be made to the home (i.e. new wiring, bulkhead work, windows, etc.) it will be longer. Solid surface, quartz and marble countertops need to have templates made before fabrication and installation and they can’t be templated until the base cabinets are installed. Most cabinets today are special order so you need to take that into consideration too. IS IT WORTH IT? According to Remodel Magazine’s “Cost vs. Value” comparison, remodeling your kitchen ranks toward the top of the list when it comes to the percentage of cost recovered when the home is sold. You also need to consider the increased enjoyment and convenience you will get from your new kitchen as opposed to the one you slave in now. BUILDING YOUR TEAM It takes a great team to successfully complete a kitchen-remodeling project. You need to involve a skilled professional remodeling contractor, a designer who is skilled in kitchen design and has your best interests in mind, and you need a supplier who can provide the products that go into the project on time, complete, and without defects.

You: You are a big part of this team. It is your responsibility to become an astute shopper for this important purchase. The total kitchen remodeling experience will be enhanced if you invest a little time in educating yourself and planning your project. So, don’t be a passive consumer, take the time to do some thinking about what you want your kitchen to look like and how you are going to use your kitchen. Develop a list of the things that ‘bug’ you about your current kitchen and things that your current kitchen has that you don’t want to give up. Doing so can make all the difference in making the whole process smoother and more enjoyable. You’ll love your new kitchen even more!

When a custom builder tackles his own home project, you know you're in for a treat. Instead of crafting the project around the wants and needs of any number of clients, the client in this case is himself, and the standards to meet (though indeed high) are his own. This was the case when Brian Huffman of Huffman Homes was ready to make the leap from a house where he had spent over 15 years raising his family, to a brand new home with more room to stretch their legs. Partnering with 42º North - Architects + Design and Becky Schrotenboer Design, Huffman was able to ensure the careful completion of a vision rooted in years of experience and a style not often seen in West Michigan. UNIQUE STYLE, COMMON FUNCTION On a private drive in beautiful Ada, the Huffmans’ new home sits neatly tucked among rolling hills suburban-yet-rural setting. Having worked on a myriad of styles throughout his decades-long career as a contractor and custom builder, Huffman knew right away that he wanted his new home to be built and designed in the European country style, one “not super common but common enough and appreciated,” he said.

The home’s European country style is enhanced with a standing seam metal roof with curved shapes, as well as stucco throughout the exterior which further adds to the home's authentic European flair. Copper accents and a battered stone further enhance the chosen style. The European details continue in the grand foyer that opens to a functional, multi-access stairway with custom metal railings .

Functionality for Huffman was also vital; both he and his wife Becky work out of the home, and they are parents to three teenagers. But at a staggering 6,000 square feet, this home somehow still feels cozy and comforting, with open floor plans where logical — like in the kitchen amid custom cabinetry by Page Woodworking — and separate spaces where necessary — like in each of the couple's respective offices. Lots of warm, neutral paint colors, like Benjamin Moore Swiss coffee in the living and dining room, softens each unique area. "The house lives bigger than it actually is ... that's due to the way that the house is laid out," said 42º North - Architects + Design’s director of operations, Travis Vugteveen. Style, function, size and land also contributed to a project years in the making, one that began with Huffman's first foray into construction as a teenager. A HISTORY OF CONSTRUCTION "My first job in high school was working at a lumber yard ... my grandfather was a builder," said Huffman. After obtaining his degree in construction management from Michigan

34 | early winter 2020

State University, Huffman moved to California to work for a commercial contractor that specialized in computer clean room interiors. Later returning to Michigan, Huffman worked in a variety of roles such as production builder, project manager and purchasing manager. It wasn't until the Great Recession — when he was laid off from a VP of operations position — that he finally decided to start his own business. At the time, he mainly worked on remodeling projects, which were generally small due to the state of the economy. “It was really market driven. Nobody was building new homes at that time,” said Huffman. He notes that his first job was installing an ironing board. “It was pretty much the absolute bottom of the market,” he added. Over the past 10 years, Huffman Homes has grown from small to larger remodels, eventually shifting into crafting mostly custom built homes from start to finish, and only tackling remodeling projects that include large, structural changes. "If you're willing to move out of your home, then it's a good remodel for me," said Huffman. "There's really not any job that scares me."

36 | early winter 2020

Now fitting in three to four custom-built homes per year, Huffman was eager to tackle his own big project after living in the same home in Forest Hills for 15 years. Ready for a change but determined to stay within his kids' existing school district, the Huffmans purchased the 3.65-acre lot in Ada in December 2018 and immediately began planning their dream home. PLANNING AND PREPARATION To tackle the project, Huffman partnered with Grand Rapids architecture and design firm 42º North - Architects + Design. “We try very hard just to be authentic to the styles that are out there. We're not trying to reinvent the wheel,” said Vugteveen, who describes the firm as one that works within a variety of styles depending on the client's wants and needs. The first step for all clients, including Huffman, is to determine how the individual or family lives in the current home, and how that lifestyle can be translated into their new home. “That's part of our process that we're really proud of,” said Vugteveen. Working with Huffman, Vugteveen and principal and lead designer Ryan La Haie sought to

achieve the “authentic European detailing” sought by the family while incorporating existing elements like a grand foyer and a functional, multi-access stairway with custom metal railings by Carlson Design. “It's a very sweet detail. We really enjoyed the challenge that came with it,” said Vugteveen of the stairway. 42º North also incorporated a standing seam metal roof with curved shapes, as well as stucco throughout the exterior. According to Vugteveen, "Stucco is not a very common product used in the Western Michigan area," which further adds to the home's authentic European flair. The home's copper accents and a battered stone wall in the entry further enhance the chosen style.

The spacious kitchen features custom cabinetry in a warm, neutral color. A large, central island features unique pendant lights above that complement the area beautifully. The hearth room is just off the open kitchen and is a favorite space for the owners. The fireplace was created from cast-in-place concrete from BV Concrete with a finish to match a rustic limestone appearance. Plenty of seating invites family and guests to stay awhile and enjoy the warmth.

A NEW APPROACH TO OLD-WORLD STYLE Both Huffman Homes and 42º North Architects + Design frequently partner with Becky Schrotenboer of Schrotenboer Design, a local interior designer who has honed her skill over the past 22 years. "[Brian] and his wife Becky are some of my favorite clients," said Schrotenboer. "They're open to suggestions," she added, which is not something she finds with all clients. Cosmopolitan Home Grand Rapids | 37

At 6,000 square feet, the home still feels cozy with open concept areas where logical — like in the kitchen and adjoining hearth and living room areas. The use of natural materials throughout, including the real wood floors in French White Oak from Century Flooring, add to the home’s comfortable appeal. The main floor powder room was painted in Benjamin Moore Narragansett Green on the walls, trim and ceiling. This striking room is all about the accents, as well, with exposed brass pipe and all brass finishings.

38 | early winter 2020

Schrotenboer also first determined how best to tackle the interior design of the home based on the Huffman family's taste and needs, and was excited to further diversify her portfolio with a more traditional look. "I appreciate that ... I have a lot of clients that want to go more modern," she said of the trend of the moment. "I do appreciate being able to do a lot of different styles." One of Schrotenboer's favorite elements of the home was the use of natural materials throughout, like copper, real wood floors in French White Oak, and wool carpeting. “I think a lot of people are moving toward a lot of the synthetic products,” she said, “but, these natural materials stand the test of time and they look the most beautiful." Huffman also took on some of the materials himself as a personal DIY project with his son during the stay-at-home order. Together, the two crafted specialty wood installations to be placed in the elder Huffman's office and his son's bedroom. “We charred it with a roofers torch, wire brushed the char, rubbed with a tung oil, and then the painter sealed it with a clear coat to make sure we didn’t smell smoke,” said Huffman. In his lower level office, Huffman then completed the look with three taxidermy installations. The method was inspired by the Shou Sugi Ban, an 18th century Japanese style of charring

40 | early winter 2020

cedar siding on the outside of homes to make them weatherproof. Intricate elements like these are part of what make up the home's unique approach to a traditional style. Lighting also played a vital role. “We spent a lot of time on lighting, said Schrotenboer, who aided Huffman in the selection of singular fixtures that stand out in each room while still coordinating with the overall look of the house. "Lighting can make or break a space," she added, noting that her favorite fixtures are the two uniquely distinct sets of pendent lights over the islands in the upstairs and lower level kitchens. UNEXPECTED DETAILS The home's collection of rooms are also complete with a variety of surprises, like a small entertainment room beyond the twin girls' bedrooms and jack-and-jill bathroom, and Huffman's downstairs office that is accessible from the over-under garage. One room that encapsulates this attention to detail and whimsy is the main floor powder room, which is painted in Benjamin Moore Narragansett Green on the walls, trim and ceiling. This striking room is all about the accents, as well, with exposed brass pipe and all brass finishings. "We wanted to do something dramatic in there with wall paneling, not wallpaper," said Cosmopolitan Home Grand Rapids | 41

Schrotenboer, drawing attention to the room's classic wood paneling. Together the color, paneling, brass and white ceramic of the plumbing "make it feel like it was an old bathroom somewhere in Europe," she added. Another quiet yet surprising detail about the house is the painting of the trim. Typically, modern homes include trim in brighter colors than the walls. But, according to Schrotenboer, “To get a more European kind of classic feel, we flip-flopped that.” On the upper level of the home, bright white trim is still a mainstay, but on the two lower floors, darker grey trim creates an inviting, old-world atmosphere. “There are a lot of things that are very traditional about [the house]," said Huffman, like the classic curved casings, wood paneling and use of natural materials. However, “We didn't want it to be stuffy and feel like late 80s early 90s colonial.” Huffman and Schrotenboer achieved this distinct take on European traditional with mostly contemporary fixtures and unexpected details like Tile Shop scallop wall tiles in the girls' upstairs bathroom. "It was being discontinued, so we bought it all," said Huffman. "The tile installer laid every wall out on the floor including the cuts before installing it to make sure we did not run short!" 42 | early winter 2020

Huffman and his son created specialty wood installations for Huffman’s lower level office and the son's bedroom that included charring the wood with a torch. The lower level includes a second kitchen and bar area open to a great room.

A multi-level garage, by Kerkstra Precast, is accessible from the main garage and the lower level office.

WARM AND INVITING Perhaps one of the most classic elements of the house is the hearth room just off the open concept kitchen. A holdover from the fireplace sitting room that the Huffmans had in their previous house, the team focused on this area as a place for respite and entertaining. “They use that space a ton," said Schrotenboer, who helped envision a larger, more functional space in the new home. "That's where they hang out all the time.” “The hearth-room fireplace is cast in place concrete with a finish to match a rustic limestone appearance,” said Huffman. “The concrete forms were built in reverse for the curves to be accurate.” The wood-burning fireplace provides yet another classic touch of warmth to the home, and plenty of seating invites family members and guests to stay a while. FOREVER HOME Despite its singular style, the home fits well in the existing neighborhood. "It complements the style of the neighbors homes," said Vugteveen and is "nestled in hilly terrain." He added, "Brian really took advantage of what the site had to offer."

After a year of planning and yet another year of building amidst a worldwide pandemic, the Huffman family moved into their new Ada home in August 2020. With so many unique elements to enjoy, the family of five has settled into a home that fits their needs — and their style — to a T. ❂

BUILDING A LAKE HOME FOR ONE FAMILY CAN BE CHALLENGING, SO WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU BUILD ONE AS A SECOND HOME FOR TWO FAMILIES TO ENJOY — MAGIC!

52 | early winter 2020

“This build was very fun to do,” said Andy Ashby, Ashby Builders. The families worked together and had fantastic communication. They were great at conveying what they wanted, so we could build their dream.” Everything about building this “train stationinspired” home was about maximizing the view of the lake from every room. Every person has their own space, and every space has a view of the lake! Hard to accomplish — you bet — but when you assemble an incredible team it can happen.

The land on White Lake was purchased eight years ago. The team spent extensive time on the site prior to the build to get a feel as to what the best placement would be to showcase the lake view as often as possible. Architect Wayne Visbeen, of Visbeen Architects, shared, “This was probably the hardest site I’ve ever had to work with, yet the result is one of the most successful projects I’ve been a part of.”

Ashby Builders and the assembled team spent extensive time on the property prior to the build to achieve the best siting possible. Architect Wayne Visbeen of Visbeen Architects, shared, “... the result is one of the most successful projects I’ve been a part of.” Multiple porches and decks, all surrounded by exquisite landscaping, designed by Harder and Warner Landscaping, offer numerous seating options for various daily scenarios.

cial considerations we had to take into account to preserve the wetlands. The result of our collaboration is a home the families love and is complementary to the natural surroundings,” said Ashby. The tough decisions didn’t stop when the placement was decided. Ashby, Visbeen, and interior designer Francesca Owings were tasked with creating an efficient, comfortable, private, yet community space. “It’s all about up front planning to build a super efficient home,” said Ashby. “Preliminary work is so important to make the design come together and work for the client. Especially in this build, it was important to proportion things correctly so the space looked right and functioned together.” And, as it is with most great designs, new inspiration can hit at any time. “Even when the design is outstanding on paper, there is a time when the client actually stands in their space and asks, ‘Could we do this differently?’ That’s when I get excited,” said Ashby. “I don’t hesitate to bring up ideas to the client. When they hire me, they hire me for my expertise, and in that moment we have the opportunity to make something better than they ever imagined.”

The lower level living space is all about the kids. They have a fantastic gaming area, a kitchenette, and comfy furnishings to relax. The living space ceiling features beams and a v-groove detail that stands out and transformed the room into something truly spectacular. Fun accessories and pops of color make it a place kids love to hang while the dock to the lake is right outside their door. One area where inspiration hit was the lower level’s circular gaming table. The curved booth area, designed by Owings, is both unique and intimate. And, Ashby’s superior craftsmanship here beautified the finished product. An “industrial vibe” was achieved using old gears from a factory, antique gaming pieces, and other 3-D elements.

The living space was another opportunity for Ashby to “up” the client’s expectations. “When we walked through that space the client said ‘Let’s do something extra here,’” said Ashby. “So we added beams and a v-groove ceiling. That detailing really stands out and transformed the room into something truly spectacular.” All of the kids’ bedrooms are on the lower level. A GREAT SENSE OF COMMUNITY As soon as you pull up to the home and reach the welcoming front entry, you want to kick off your shoes, shake off a tough week, and start relaxing. You are pulled into the open floor plan that offers many areas to kick back and enjoy the company. The open airy casual vibe is evident and the views of the lake are breathtaking no matter where you’re standing. You can feel that everything about this place is about being one with the outdoors and enjoying Michigan summers. We all end up in the kitchen, right? The direction given to Todd Wiley of Tru Kitchens was that the kitchen was to be a “hang out area”. Mission accomplished. You are easily drawn to this casual spot to cook, eat, and enjoy a summer’s bounty. The cooking area incorporates a raised snack bar with a walnut butcher-block top. The space includes two dishwashers — ideal for entertaining — and Viking appliances. It would be easy to miss the refrigerator because it flows in with the cabinetry. Wiley shared, “It is very efficient use of space with fantastic views of the lake.” The community area continues outdoors where the most difficult decision of the day may be which of the gorgeous areas to go. Perhaps the morning paper and coffee in the screened porch on the upper

level, then grab some sun in a beach chair on the upper deck or lower lounging area, then finish with a beverage and meal while sitting in one of the bar stools around the outdoor kitchen. If it’s a night that is a little buggy, just mosey on over to the outdoor dining table and lower the retractable screen porch to keep the pests away. Harder and Warner designed and executed the innovative and easy-to-care for landscaping that provides the finishing touches to the exterior for the lakefront cottage. When you stand at the water’s edge and look back at the home, it looks as if it has always been there. It is a testament to great design and amazing craftsmanship. The client definitely agrees, “In a nutshell it was a positive experience working with Andy Ashby because he listened to our unique requirements and followed through to make sure the project represented a high level of quality and craftsmanship. It was the first time I had ever worked with a residential builder who truly looked out for what was in the best interest of the client.” Ashby’s craftsmanship was honed through summers working for his step-father while he attended college to become a high school chemistry teacher. During his six years of teaching, Ashby continued working construction in the summers. Eventually he built his own home and homes for some friends.

The upper level of the home includes the two owners’ wings with each suite having glorious views of the lake. A unique element of the home is that there are no closets. Rooms feature built in window seats and armoires. Window seats provide the perfect space to place a suitcase for the weekend, or, for a longer stay, items can be stored away in the custom armoires built by Ashby Builders. The beautiful custom work carries through to the bathroom vanities and cabinets.

In 2004, he decided to make his passion for carpentry and building his full-time job. “It was a tough time to start as a builder,” Ashby states, “Those hard times forced me to be as efficient as possible and provide as much value as possible for my clients. I like to get inside their head so I can replicate and improve on what they want. It is very important for me to deliver the very best on all my builds, because people are paying good, hardearned money and they want the best. I do everything I can to make sure that happens and to take it to the next level and in budget. The best compliment I ever received was ‘Our home turned out better than what we expected.’” Ashby shares, “I try to create show points in every home I build, no matter the budget. Those are the places in a home where people will stop and say, ‘Wow, that’s really beautiful.” Ashby said the build on White Lake is one he is really proud of and there are some show points for him: the round gaming area, the look of the upper living space, the bunk beds, and the custom furniture. Creativity, hard work, and the right team took a barren lot to a place of beauty where two families will create magical summer memories. ❂
