CONSIDERATIONS FOR YOUR FINANCIAL FUTURE

Analyzing College Just Like a Stock Determining a Good Investment Calculate a school’s ROI to determine whether it is a good investment or not A typical college degree is worth a ton of money over a career. A typical degree – but not every college. College costs rose roughly 7% annually over the past 50 years, about double the average yearly inflation rate. And overall costs of some, including even community colleges, have increased faster than that in recent years, according to the College Board. In general, higher education does boost your lifetime earning potential. Some schools simply seem not worth the investment, though.

The most highly endowed colleges can reduce their cost of attendance with grants and scholarships. For example, Stanford ranks as one of the most expensive schools based on sticker price. But generous financial assistance makes for a very competitive net cost and would give the school a high ROI score. Debt burdens are also relative. A doctor’s salary more quickly pays off a high-price education loan than a teacher’s. Good rule: Avoid incurring college debt exceeding half your expected annual income. Limiting loans in this way allows you to pay off student debt after five years using 10% of your future salary. Clearly your ROI analysis will show a world of difference between the outcomes of graduates of highly rated schools and with graduates of those schools near the bottom of the barrel. Attending a college with a poor ROI is not necessarily a mistake but, for reasons now obvious, the financial aid package better be sweet.

What is Your Return on Investment? To calculate whether your college is worth it, use an opportunity cost measure called return on investment (ROI). After factoring all the net college costs, compare 30 years of estimated income of a college graduate versus 34 years of income from a high school graduate who started working immediately and didn’t pay college expenses or assume the debt of student loans.

As with any investment, do your homework before you commit time and money to such an unknown outcome. ❂

Future college students (and their parents) must realize that not all colleges are equal. Graduates from the lowest-ranking schools often earn less income after graduation. You can also assume that low-performing schools tend to offer less financial assistance, which leaves graduates with larger debt burdens.

THE BEST VERSION OF YOU BY MVP ATHLETIC CLUBS

Strength, Reimagined Reformer Pilates at MVP Athletic Clubs At MVP Athletic Clubs, we believe that movement should be

both challenging and intentional. That is why we are thrilled to introduce Reformer Pilates. Whether you’ve seen the "carriage" from a distance or have been waiting for the right moment to jump in, Reformer Pilates is already proving to be a game-changer for our community. It is reshaping the way we think about strength, helping you build control, improve mobility, and move with greater purpose in every workout. To understand what makes this method so effective, it starts with the Reformer itself and how it transforms the way we train. WHAT IS THE REFORMER? If you’ve only ever done Pilates on a mat, you’re in for a completely different experience. While mat Pilates uses your body weight for resistance, the Reformer introduces a sophisticated system of springs, pulleys, and a sliding carriage. By adjusting the spring tension, you can increase resistance to build strength or reduce it to challenge stability and core control. This versatility allows for a greater range of motion than a traditional floor workout. It’s not just about "abs"; it’s a full-body conditioning tool that can support your weight in a stretch or challenge you in movements like lunges, presses, and controlled transitions. The best part is that it is truly for everyone. We’ve seen elite athletes use the Reformer to uncover "blind spots" in their performance, and beginners use it to build confidence and body awareness from day one. Whether you are a "Level 1" newcomer or an advanced athlete looking for high-intensity precision, the Reformer meets you exactly where you are. BRINGING THE VISION TO MVP As we launched this program in April, we did so with a clear mission in mind: to give our members more ways to move better and live longer. Since then, the momentum has been incredible, and the response from our community continues to grow.

12 | ISSUE SIX • 2025

Reformer Pilates aligns perfectly with the MVP mission. We are more than a gym. We are a destination for wellness, performance, and longterm health. By adding dedicated Reformer studios, we are able to offer a boutique training experience right here in our Clubs. It ensures our members have another way to challenge themselves and continue to progress in their fitness journey. WHY I LOVE THIS METHOD (THE EXPERT TAKE) In my years of personal training and group exercise, I’ve seen plenty of fitness trends come and go. Reformer Pilates isn’t a trend. It is a foundational shift in how we approach strength, movement, and longevity. Here’s why I’m so passionate about it: Strength Meets Flexibility – Most workouts make you choose one or the other. The Reformer requires both. You are building lean muscle while lengthening those muscles under tension, creating strength that is both powerful and functional.

Posture and Core Stability – In a world where we are constantly hunched over screens, the Reformer reinforces proper spinal alignment and deep "powerhouse" engagement. You’ll walk out feeling taller and more connected to your body. Low Impact, High Results – It is incredibly kind to the joints. This makes it the ideal option for injury recovery, mobility work, or for athletes who need a break from highimpact training or heavy lifting. Mind-Body Connection – You cannot "zone out" on a Reformer. Every movement is intentional, controlled, and precise. It becomes a form of moving meditation that keeps you fully present and engaged with every breath. THE RESPONSE AND WHAT’S NEXT The response from our members has been nothing short of electric. Our classes are filling quickly, and the energy in the studios is contagious. But we’re just getting started. With demand continuing to grow, we are already looking at ways to expand our offerings. This includes adding more class times to the schedule, introducing private one-on-one sessions for those who want a more tailored approach, and continuing to grow our incredible team of certified instructors. OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU At the end of the day, our goal is to keep MVP at the forefront of innovation. We are constantly looking for ways to improve your experience and provide the tools that support your overall health and longevity. What we love most about Reformer Pilates is that it’s inclusive, effective, and most importantly, it works. It represents our commitment to your growth, and I can’t wait to see you on the Reformer soon. Let’s keep moving forward, together. ❂ Author: Chelie Simmons, Director of Fitness Programming About MVP Athletic Clubs MVP Athletic Clubs has led the West Michigan region in health and wellness since 2005. Operating five locations in Grand Rapids, Holland and Rockford, MVP serves more than 27,000 members annually. The organization is dedicated to building healthier communities by offering diverse fitness programs, a wellness-driven approach, state-of-theart equipment, and a connected, uplifting community. Haven House Modern Architecture with a Soul TEXT BY KIRSETIN K. MORELLO PHOTOS BY ETHAN GORDON

T

Throughout the Great Lakes State, many homes line the shores of Lake Michigan. But this exquisite Michigan modern home, tucked behind a pair of protective bluffs, occupies a Grand Haven site that feels both sheltered and distinct. “Our homes are so site specific,” said Joe Filippelli, principal architect and founder of North House Architects, based in Grand Haven. “It’s like the site is the second client of ours. We have to listen to what it says.” Filippelli’s primary client, of course, was the couple who purchased this property. They first approached him after admiring a smaller lakeshore home he’d designed, intrigued by its elevated primary living space. “They liked the idea of building a home that operates most on a single, elevated story,” Filippelli said. Environmental restrictions required the new house to be set well back from the original footprint. “If the primary areas were on the ground floor, they wouldn’t have the views they have now. The fact that I’d done another project with this typology made me a good fit.” Raised amid Ohio’s wide-open landscape, Filippelli felt at ease in nature from an early age. “The type of architecture I pursue works and lives best in that type of environment,” he said. “I appreciate traditional classical architecture because of the soul,” he continued, “but I also appreciate distilling it into a more modern concept—using natural materials for site-specific projects.” Each home draws from his clients’ personalities, the land, and his experience. “I want to design modern architecture with a soul.”

The attention to detail impresses immediately with a lake view framed through the home’s design as you approach. The home’s exterior siding from Delta Millworks features lightly stained, thermally modified hemlock that is incredibly rot resistant. A corrugated single-slope shed roof rises a foot and a half on the lake side. Berghuis Construction built a cold roof with a vented cavity beneath the corrugated roof to promote airflow and add a secondary layer of protection against the tremendous lake winds

That philosophy resonated deeply with the homeowners. “We met with Joe and immediately felt comfortable with his design,” recalled the homeowner. For the build, they chose Berghuis Construction, founded by Josh Berghuis. “We brought Josh on early and the process worked very well from start to finish. We were extremely pleased with the communication, design, and attention we received from both of them.” Berghuis Construction held biweekly meetings and kept communication open at every stage. “When we’re done with the house, there’s still a connection,” said Nate VanHouten, project manager. “Building relationships is important to us.” One standout feature of this build is the stacked-concrete, wood-burning fireplace that grounds both the indoor living space and the lower-level outdoor patio. Berghuis Construction used innovative techniques to control the finish and placement of the joints. “We wanted the rawness of the concrete to be visually expressive,” Filippelli said. “Berghuis

16 | ISSUE THREE 2026

Construction was able to find creative ways to get the look I wanted and find the sweet spot between economy and artistry.” The fireplace’s sculptural form complements the home’s Michigan Modern aesthetic, reflected in every piece of furniture and artwork. “She has a great eye,” said Filippelli, noting that the homeowner handled the interior design herself. “It’s fun working with clients like that because it elevates our work.” The couple has collected furniture for decades, and those legacy pieces now grace this space. A Nelson Swag Leg desk sits to the left of the fireplace. In the living room, a Danish-made Niels Eilersen leather sofa pairs with a gold upholstered Corona Swivel Lounge chair, designed by Poul M. Volther in 1962. An Eames Lounge chair and ottoman in black leather and rosewood, circa 1967, add an iconic mid-century note. Completing the ensemble is the elegantly simple Isamu Noguchi walnut and glass coffee table.

Nearby, two blue fiberglass Eames Shell chairs from the 1960s, inherited from the husband’s parents, and four ash-molded plywood Eames “Potato Chip” chairs, a wedding gift from the bride’s parents, surround a Knoll Saarinen Tulip table, designed in 1957. The entire collection feels both personal and curated. Expansive windows provide a backdrop and frame sweeping views of the lake and the dunes. The specific windows were chosen in part because the mullions provide structural integrity. “It’s a very unorthodox system, especially in the West Michigan residential sector,” Filippelli said. “To get it to work as seamlessly as it does takes careful planning. Berghuis’s execution was incredible.” An awning window at the base of the central window opens upward, allowing airflow even during rain. Sliding glass doors topped with transom windows extend views from the kitchen, while steel beams, painted to match the windows’ deep brown color, add warmth.

“It’s like the site is the second client of ours. We have to listen to what it says.” – Joe Filippelli

In the adjacent kitchen, modern minimalism takes shape with a Sonneman Thin-Line 6 pendant above an Alpha White Brushed granite island. White cabinetry made in Germany by LEICHT Kitchens, stainless steel Brizo Oden fixtures, and Fisher & Paykel induction range continue the home’s restrained, functional aesthetic. Engineered European white oak flooring runs throughout, providing a warm continuity, while a vertical grain hemlock ceiling finished with a clear sealant adds depth overhead. Just beyond, the deck cantilevers toward the dunes, balancing beautiful lake views and environmental restrictions. Filippelli and his team spent a significant amount of time determining how best to interface with the “V” shape between the dunes. The final layout was incredibly deliberate, considering all visual and structural elements. Below, the deck’s steel frame required intricate welding and highly detailed coordination, a challenge Filippelli credits Berghuis Construction with handling exceptionally well. “There’s no wiggle room with exposed steel,” he said. “They had to get it right the first time.” Steel mesh railings frame the deck, with a gauge Cosmopolitan Home | 17

strong enough to handle winds off the lake, but light enough to maintain the view. On the wall opposite the windows, white oak frames a composition of cabinetry, a Miele oven and built-in coffee maker, a wet bar, and open shelving. Clerestory windows wash the space with soft light while keeping the focus on the lake. A tall, narrow window to the left adds additional natural light and offers a discreet view of the driveway. Around the corner, the powder room introduces a bold pattern with Eldblomman wallpaper designed by Josef Frank in the 1940s. It plays beautifully against the white, gray, and blue-green tones in the Aquarius polished marble countertop. Fabricated white oak veneer walls run the length of the hallway and continue into the primary bedroom. A hidden pocket door on a concealed track provides privacy and integrates seamlessly with the wood walls when closed. That continuity extends into the bedroom, where white oak veneer wraps the walls, closets, and headboard, creating a cohesive effect. Minimal hardware and smooth, flush surfaces

modified hemlock. “The heat treatment makes it incredibly rot resistant,” explained Filippelli. “And it turns the wood this beautiful medium brown tone that the homeowners really liked.” The deep collaboration between the homeowner, architect, and builder, along with an unwavering commitment to quality, shaped a home built to endure. “When you’re building a home that’s going to last a hundred years or more, you do a lot of things people never see in order to ensure long-term quality,” Filippelli said. Keeping Faith

On May 1, 2006, Marielle Shuster became the proud owner of Coiffeteria Salon, a luxury hair destination in East Grand Rapids. As she approaches the salon’s 20th anniversary, she reflects with deep gratitude—and a bit of disbelief—wondering, “Where did the time go?” Cosmopolitan Home | 27

Her journey to business ownership was anything but straightforward. It was shaped by unexpected turns, continuous growth, and a determination to learn every facet of the beauty industry—all while balancing motherhood and developing her leadership style. Marielle’s passion began early. At just five years old, a visit to the salon with her mother sparked a fascination with the industry’s energy, creativity, and connection. That moment set her on a clear path. Throughout high school, she worked as a receptionist at a local salon, building relationships and gaining firsthand experience. Though she initially enrolled at Michigan State University, it didn’t take long for Marielle to realize her true calling wasn’t in a traditional academic path. After one semester, she made the bold decision to pursue cosmetology. Later, she returned to school while continuing to work as a stylist, ultimately earning her business degree from Aquinas College.

From the beginning, her goal was to create a warm, welcoming environment where both clients and staff feel a true sense of belonging. Her career then evolved into the corporate side of the beauty industry, where she worked as a hair color educator for Aveda Fredric’s Corporation and eventually rose to regional sales manager. In these roles, she educated stylists and partnered with salon owners to help grow their businesses. It was during this time— while attending a week-long sales meeting— that she received the life-changing call. Coiffeteria Salon, one of her clients, offered her the opportunity to purchase the business—what she now fondly calls a “godwink.” Recognizing the rarity of such a moment, Marielle took a leap of faith—and never looked back. Building a successful salon didn’t happen overnight. Stepping into ownership meant leading an established team and earning their trust. “The biggest challenge was earning their respect and making the salon my own,” she shares. Over time, she cultivated a dedicated, close-knit team committed to serving their community— “one smile and one hairstyle at a time.” At the heart of Marielle’s success is her genuine love for people. From the beginning, her goal was to create a warm, welcoming environment where both clients and staff feel a true sense of belonging. At Coiffeteria, guests are greeted by name, and the atmosphere encourages authenticity and connection. Marielle believes the salon should be a place where clients can feel

“Even on my worst days,” she says, “I always leave the salon feeling better than when I arrived.” That joy—helping others feel their best—has fueled her more than 35 years in the industry.

Looking ahead, Marielle remains committed to growth and innovation. She is especially passionate about using safer, cleaner products that protect the health of both clients and stylists. With increased awareness of the long-term risks associated with chemical exposure in the industry, she prioritizes education and invests in healthier alternatives to create a safer salon environment.

Equally important to Marielle is maintaining a strong work-life balance. Becoming a mother reinforced her desire to keep family at the center of her life. Transitioning from a travel-heavy corporate role to owning a salon in her hometown allowed her to be more present for her children. Today, she fosters a workplace culture that supports women—especially mothers—in pursuing their careers while prioritizing family. “It’s all about creating a place where family comes first—but we still get the job done,” she says. Over the past two decades, Marielle has learned to embrace change, both professionally and personally. In an ever-evolving industry, adaptability is key. “What worked twenty years ago doesn’t necessarily work today,” she notes. Her perspective on life has also shifted—she approaches each day and every interaction with gratitude, choosing to focus on what she can control and remain present in the moment. Her advice to those entering the beauty industry is simple: “Don’t overthink it—just do it.” It’s advice she followed herself 20 years ago when she said yes to an unexpected opportunity. Today, Marielle continues to do what she loves most—serving others and being a “daymaker.” As she celebrates this milestone, she looks ahead with excitement and gratitude for what the next chapter will bring. ❂

Lake Living Elevated on Big Brower Lake

According to LakeHub, Michigan ranks fourth in the nation for the number of inland lakes, boasting nearly 6,500 lakes of ten acres or more. Houghton Lake is the largest by surface area, while Torch Lake holds the greatest volume. In fact, Michiganders are never more than six miles from a natural water source—offering not only endless recreational opportunities, but also an abundance of lakeside living options. Closer to home, there are over 50 such habitable inland lakes within just a few miles of Grand Rapids. Reeds Lake is the largest in Kent County, while Murray Lake in the northeast and Silver Lake are among the most desirable nearby destinations. Expanding to a commutable radius of 50 miles, dozens of all-sports and private lakes dot the landscape. Gun Lake, Whitefish Lake, and Hess Lake are home to thriving, year-round lake communities. With waterfront property in Michigan finite, a growing trend has emerged: “remodeling with a bulldozer.” Rather than renovating outdated cottages, homeowners are purchasing properties for the land itself—razing existing structures to make way for new construction. While strict waterfront setback ordinances can make demolition complex, the result is the opportunity to build a truly custom dream home. One striking example of this trend can be found on Big Brower Lake, just 30 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids.

The two-story, symmetrical façade features a prominent central gable and a lower-pitched roofline, all rendered in a distinctive Tuscany green. A garage anchors the left side, while a singlestory wing balances the right. Dark-trimmed peak windows add geometric interest, while a blend of horizontal siding below and vertical board-and-batten above introduces subtle contrast. Stone accents and a dark-metal roof frame the inviting entry where designers Kristie Koning and Maggie Visser welcome a tour.

Backstory & Connections Homeowners Michael and Kendra Havemeier, both Grand Rapids-area realtors, recall the serendipitous beginning of their project: “In 2023, we just happened to look at a house back on our old lake for a potential flip. After we realized it was a teardown, we started talking about how we missed Big Brower and the lake community. Within a day, we put an offer in on the house and won. Three years later and we are living in our new home.” The Havemeier’s former Big Brower Lake neighbor, builder Kurt Brown, and his partner Doug Boumann became an obvious choice for their rebuild. “We interviewed several companies, but felt the knowledge, care and experience come through when we met with Doug and Kurt. They had already built or added onto over 40 houses around the lake, so we knew they were comfortable working in the community and the township.”

The builders, in turn, recommended residential designer Ron Van Den Brand to bring the vision to life. A self-described “under-the-radar” designer, Van Den Brand has relied on word-of-mouth referrals throughout his 50-year career. He has collaborated with Brown & Boumann on several lake homes in the region, as well as projects in the exclusive Bay Harbor resort near Petoskey. “Over the years, Kurt and Doug have proven to be great craftsmen, said Van Den Brand. “They are very knowledgeable and easy to work with.” “We spent a lot of time on the big decisions for layout and features,” said the homeowners. “We both wanted a modern-ish look that didn’t feel cold and was comfortable and inviting.” Kendra prioritized expansive windows to capture the lake views, along with thoughtful storage and space for guests. Michael envisioned a lower level with 10-foot ceilings for entertaining, a walk-in pantry, and a standout kitchen with panel-ready appliances. Not unlike the Havemeier’s connections with Brown & Boumann, the owners immediately chose their former classmate and life long friend Kristie Koning as their interior designer, knowing she would be a good fit. Designing the Details As owner and principal designer of Kristie Koning Design, Koning has spent over 15 years crafting thoughtful residential interiors since graduating with honors from Kendall College of Art & Design. Her client-first philosophy is

rooted in her guiding principle: *successful design begins with understanding the client.* Koning feels the most rewarding part of the process is creating a functional yet comfortable space that reflects the client’s unique lifestyle and personality. She points out a key component of her successful designs is designer Maggie Visser and the use of abundant local artisans to creatively achieve client goals. “Maggie is involved in every project, elevating the design,” said Koning. “I hired her three years ago and bringing her on was one of the best decisions I ever made.” Design challenges fuel their passion. Creative use of color, whimsical wallpaper, contrasting textures, art work and lighting are key components of Koning’s schemes. Recent clients expressed their desire to prominently showcase treasured collections, so room layouts were organized to complement a collection of Major League Baseball caps in one home, and a display of foreign liquor bottles in another. Attention to detail and commitment to communication are their forté.

“One of our favorite features is the beautiful built-ins surrounding the fireplace on the main floor. We wanted something different and attractive ... “ Part of the Koning design process is the creation of Mood Boards that carefully delineate selections for each area of the home. Decisions are recorded pictorially showing paint, lighting, flooring, cabinetry, textures and furnishings brought together to create an overall mood. Next, multiple 3-D renderings are generated to explore options on how the space will function before being built in real time. “We are committed to finding out what the client wants, and we tend to gently push them out of their comfort zone exploring possibilities to bring life through their design, ultimately making it a reflection of them.” First Impressions From the street, the home sits gracefully within its lakeside setting. The two-story, symmetrical façade features a prominent central gable and a lower-pitched roofline, all rendered in a distinctive Tuscany green. A garage anchors the left side, while a single-story wing balances the right.

Dark-trimmed peak windows add geometric interest, while a blend of horizontal siding below and vertical board-and-batten above introduces subtle contrast. Stone accents and a dark metal porch roof frame the welcoming entry. “The home is really a combination rather than one particular style,” said Van Den Brand. “The distinct metal roofing leans toward modern, but it’s its own thing. The owners, during our initial meeting, wanted the board and baton siding, stone work and windows to enjoy the lake. That’s what I was able to give them.” Koning concurred, “The best way to describe the style of the home is ‘Warm Mod.’ Kendra wanted an interior that was clean, warm and inviting rather than cold and sterile, so we included a few contemporary elements to achieve this.”

“Any project is great when your clients trust you, and we are so pleased with the execution, craftsmanship and details.” The lakeside facade of the home is a near wall of windows repeating the front gable theme on the three level design. A center deck runs the width of the home providing a commanding view of Big Brower. The lower level repeats the front masonry with a Birchbark ledge layered wall with a practical service door for lower level storage. From the lower cement patio, the elevation terraces down with stairs and landings to a lower sundeck, matching lake storage shed, and a dock extending from the sea wall, perfect for enjoying the sandy bottom swim area and lake proper. The Bigger Picture Inside, a dramatic two-story great hall unfolds beyond the entry, with a vaulted ceiling and a wall of glass framing the lake beyond. A striking pendant fixture—composed of cascading glass orbs—adds a sculptural focal point. “The goal was to maximize the lake view the moment you walk in,” noted Van Den Brand. The kitchen, tucked beneath a lower ceiling with exposed beams, is both intimate and functional. Silver-gray honed granite countertops and full-slab backsplashes complement moody green cabinetry, while panel-ready appliances and a hidden pantry door maintain a seamless aesthetic. A functional island provides convenient seating for four.

The dining area and living room flow from the kitchen with timeless luxury vinyl plank flooring from Rockford Floor Covering. Both spaces take advantage of views of the substantial fireplace flanked by custom built-ins.

A short privacy hallway opens to the primary suite as the owner’s serene, relaxing retreat. The bedroom accesses the center deck, offering elevated views of Big Brower Lake.

Nearby, the dining area and living room flow from the kitchen and take advantage of the substantial fireplace flanked by custom built-ins. “One of our favorite features is the beautiful built-ins surrounding the fireplace on the main floor,” shard the homeowners. “We wanted something different and attractive, but did not want to lose the functionality of having a TV in the living room and storage. Kristie perfectly captured this goal.” Koning highlights the fluted accent wall as a standout feature. “It is a true work of art created by Kurt Brown. He really made our vision happen.” The main level also includes a mudroom with custom millwork, a powder room, a private office, and a serene primary suite complete with a spa-like bath and thoughtfully designed details.

38 | ISSUE THREE 2026

Upstairs, two bedrooms connect via a bridge overlooking the great hall, offering views both to the lake and the street. The lower level is designed for entertaining, with a spacious family room, wet bar, game area, exercise room, and additional bedroom. There are multiple access points from the rear of the home to two covered porches that extend out onto the upper sun deck, providing additional outdoor living opportunities. Comfortable, Cohesive Elegance Koning’s design achieves a seamless balance of sophistication and comfort. The result is not only a beautiful aesthetic, but also a comfortable relaxed feel. The “Simple White” wall color proves to be the perfect backdrop for contrasting pops of color including patterned floorcoverings and personalized artwork while allowing the natural wood tones to warmly glow.

“The view is unreal, gorgeous,” said Koning. “We used an earth tone color palette to enhance rather than take away from it. We incorporated nature through subtle uses of blues and greens to reflect the water and trees along with the beauty of our wooden features.” Details carry the design story from room to room: repeating materials, sculptural lighting, and carefully selected finishes create a sense of cohesion. Practical touches—like a pot filler, hidden storage, and integrated design elements— enhance daily living without sacrificing style.

“We spent a lot of time on the big decisions for layout and features. We both wanted a modern-ish look that didn’t feel cold and was comfortable and inviting.”

Mutual Accolades Van Den Brand praises the homeowners’ commitment to quality: “They didn’t cut corners. From the white oak interior doors to the craftsmanship throughout, this home is truly exceptional. Kurt Brown’s interior trim work makes it an absolute showpiece.” Koning echoes the sentiment: “Kurt and Doug were a pleasure to work with throughout the build. Kendra and Michael were ‘dream clients’ who had faith in our vision and creative process, and through collaboration from start to finish, they let us have some fun with the design. Any project is great when your clients trust you, and we are so pleased with the execution, craftsmanship and details. The entire team put their hearts and souls into this home.”

A pass-through walk-in closet yields to a spa-like bath featuring an elaborate glassed-in shower showcasing dark navy picket upper tile over geometric textured blue and grey. A cornered double vanity and a large corner mirror are exclusive touches.

Reflecting on the process, the homeowners acknowledge the challenges—but also the reward: “The building process is never as quick as you hope or without its hurdles but trusting experts to guide you through the process makes it much easier. Having been in our home for just over a year now, we sometimes take for granted how beautiful it all is during the day to day grind of life, but when we stop and look around, or have new people over for the first time, we are quickly reminded of what we were able to create thanks to our builders, designers, contractors and some input from ourselves!” Cosmopolitan Home | 39

The lower level features a large family room, perfect for entertaining, complete with a dark blue wet bar kitchenette, game room, exercise room, a full bath and a fourth bedroom. Ample storage completes the layout.

A rear entry mudroom, featuring custom millwork by Phillip Elenbaas Millwork, conveniently leads from the garage to the kitchen. A convenient powder room features the same granite as the kitchen continuing the cohesive feel of the home.

“From the white oak interior doors to the craftsmanship throughout, this home is truly exceptional. ”

Luxurious yet inviting, this Big Brower Lake residence is a true testament to thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and the enduring appeal of lakeside living. ❂

Luminous Living

A BRIGHTER APPROACH TO SELF CARE BY SIMPLY THE BEST AESTHETICS

The Ultimate Glow Why Microneedling is Your Skin’s New Best Friend When it comes to achieving a truly radiant, youthful

complexion, some treatments stand out above the rest. Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, has become a cornerstone of modern aesthetic care for its ability to transform skin from the inside out. While many focus solely on the face, this versatile treatment is equally effective for the neck and décolletage — areas that are often the first to show signs of aging through fine lines, sun damage, and "crepey" texture.

Elevate Your Glow with Advanced Add-Ons To take your results further, Simply the Best Aesthetics offers cutting-edge enhancements that work synergistically with microneedling: • AnteAGE P.E.A.R.L. is a premier, in-office regenerative treatment that acts as a supercharged "cell-signaling" boost to post-procedure skin. By blending biosomes (advanced exosomes) with DNA-repairing PDRN, it accelerates healing, significantly increases collagen production, and maximizes the anti-aging results of microneedling or laser services, leading to faster recovery and visibly firmer, more radiant skin. • Exosomes & Biosomes: These are the next frontier in regenerative medicine. Exosomes are 100 to 1,000 times more potent than traditional PRP, carrying a high concentration of growth factors and genetic material to optimize cell-to-cell communication. Biosomes act as advanced lipid-based carriers, ensuring these active ingredients penetrate even deeper into the dermis for maximum rejuvenation. • Microchanneling Serums: Customize your treatment with targeted serums for brightening, clarifying, or anti-aging. These solutions address specific concerns like hyperpigmentation and acne-prone skin while your channels are open and most receptive. • PRX & PRX PLUS: Often called the "Unicorn Facial," PRX DermPerfexion is a revolutionary biorevitalization treatment that uses TCA and hydrogen peroxide to stimulate collagen without the peeling or downtime of a traditional chemical peel. Adding PRX PLUS introduces ammonium 3 chloroacetate and kojic acid for enhanced skin tightening and brightening, making it the perfect finishing touch for a luminous complexion. Your Journey to Radiance Starts Here At Simply the Best Aesthetics in Grand Rapids, MI, we believe your skin deserves a little extra love. Whether you’re looking to smooth out stubborn neck lines or restore a youthful glow to your face and chest, our expert team provides personalized care and customized treatment plans tailored to your unique goals.

How Microneedling Works Microneedling uses a specialized device to create thousands of precise, controlled micro-channels in the skin’s surface. This process triggers your body’s natural healing response, sparking a surge in collagen and elastin production. These essential proteins are the building blocks of firm, smooth skin, helping to: • Reduce the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, and deep wrinkles. • Improve overall skin texture and tone. • Enhance the absorption of active skincare ingredients by up to 400%.

2011: Here’s a fun look back to this hard-to-forget home that emits summertime joy. When a beautiful site on Lake Michigan finally became available, these homeowners jumped at the opportunity to build a home that would accomodate large groups and overnight guests all while enjoying the Lake Michigan view. The first priority was to create a home that felt welcoming and relaxing and with the help of architect Wayne Visbeen, builder Ben Brinks and interior designer Kimzey Waltman, they did that and more. Enjoy!

OH YES, PATIENCE IS A VIRTUE but, for these content cottage owners, patience paid off. “We had our eye on this site for quite some time,” explained the homeowners, who previously owned a nearby cottage. “When the owner was ready to sell, we were there waiting.” With a love for spending summers on Lake Michigan with family and friends, the homeowners were hopeful to build a larger space that would more comfortably accommodate big groups as well overnight guests. “We love this home: the view, the architecture, and the landscaping are everything we hoped for and more.” The first order of business when the site was purchased was to design a space that had a welcoming, relaxing, and open feel. “We wanted this to be a place where people felt at home, relaxed, and comfortable,” said the owner. “That was key.” To make this vision a reality, local architect and “genius” (according to Kim Waltman, of Waltman Interiors), Wayne Visbeen created the plan. “Wayne, along with builder Ben Brinks of Distinctive Homes, designed a home that is architecturally beautiful, well designed, and solidly built. We couldn’t be happier with the quality and the design,” explained the owner. “This is the second time we’ve worked with the homeowners as well as with Wayne and Kim,” noted Brinks. “Because of our previous work together, the process went very smoothly, we communicate well as a team, and we’re able to make things happen quickly.” Brinks also added that Visbeen’s hands-on approach and availability helped streamline the project. “Wayne and I share an appreciation of the sacredness of design which makes working together a real treat,” said Brinks.

50 | ISSUE THREE 2026

According to Visbeen, who previously worked with the homeowners on a renovation project, the site’s proximity to the surrounding homes and the relatively narrow space with which they were working (75 feet of frontage) dictated much of the design. “We chose the Dutch colonial style, which uses a gambrel roof,” explained Visbeen, “because this type of roofline tapers down, creating a very soft and subtle transition to the neighboring homes.” As such, the home blends seamlessly with its surroundings. The inclusion of dormers and columns and the shingled exterior also typify the Dutch colonial style. Since the home sets relatively close to the street and because the homeowners enjoy gardening, Visbeen designed a raised, English garden with a wall and gate at the property’s entrance. “The garden creates a welcoming environment and something beautiful to look at while the homeowners sit on the covered porch and enjoy the morning sun,” said Visbeen. In addition, the garden is just steps away from the kitchen. “When we’re cooking,” explained the homeowner, “I have fresh herbs right outside my door.”

“We had our eye on this site for quite some time. When the owner was ready to sell, we were there waiting.”

The home’s interior design brings together architectural, structural, and natural elements to create a warm, welcoming, and flowing space that is ideal for entertaining. “We love to have friends and family here to relax, unwind, and enjoy the beauty of the lake,” explained the owner. “The home has a light and airy feel,” explained Waltman. “Green sherbet, sunset red, warm yellow, sky blue, and bright white complement the natural surroundings while the botanical theme brings the outside in.” Everything about the color scheme and decor helps create the charming and relaxing cottage atmosphere that the homeowners desired. A large, granite island in the kitchen was essential for food preparation and snacking. “When family is visiting, they enjoy cooking together and the large island accommodates many helping hands,” noted Marilyn Nagelkirk of K West. When meals are ready, the cozy banquette is nearby with its pie-crust shaped table. “Wayne (Visbeen) did a great job of designing the banquette around the table, which we already had,” said the owner. More often, though, the screened porch is the option of choice for dining. “We love eating out here where we can enjoy the view of the lake.” A walk-in pantry that also serves as a cozy office area is conveniently located off the kitchen. “I wanted a small space where I could do paperwork that wasn’t intrusive,” said the owner. “Combining that area with the pantry, has worked out perfectly.” The space includes a sink, countertop, and ample storage, and has also served as a work area for caterers. The butler pantry and bar, adjacent to the kitchen and screened porch, offer convenient service to both areas. “The homeowners had fun with the red cabinets and red quartz countertop,” noted Nagelkirk. “It adds a little

boldness to the more muted colors of the rest of the home.” This area also includes a beverage refrigerator, wine cooler, and small sink. The screened porch, with its western exposure, is an integral part of the home, seamlessly flowing from both the kitchen and living room. The space includes a dining area as well as a cozy area in front of the wood burning fireplace — an ideal place to read, chat, or simply enjoy the beautiful view. Clear plastic, detachable window covers make the room comfortable even on chilly or windy days. “Without the covers, this room would get a lot less use,” said the owner. “It’s often windy out here so the covers protect us while allowing us to enjoy the view even on days when it’s too windy or cold to be on the beach.” A covered porch and deck offer outdoor options for enjoying the view or watching the sunset.

“Green sherbet, sunset red, warm yellow, sky blue, and bright white complement the natural surroundings while the botanical theme brings the outside in.”

Two additional sitting areas, a living room and den offer the view of the lake in a formal setting or while relaxing and watching television. These areas share a two-sided, open fireplace with a unique touch. “The rocks forming the fireplace surround were taken from the foundations of my great grandparents’ home and barn,” said the owner. “This piece is very special to us.” The den, which doubles as an office, can be closed off with doors on either side of the fireplace when privacy is needed. Another requirement owners had was that each of the four bedrooms include an attached, full bath. “We want our guests to enjoy their stay and have privacy,” explained the owner. Each bedroom is impeccably decorated with light and airy paint colors, coordinating bedding, and plush carpet. “The rest of the house has wood floors for easy clean up,” explained the owner. “We wanted something warmer on the feet in the bedrooms.” Vintage touches are sprinkled throughout the home as the homeowners wanted the new cottage to have an “aged” feel. To accomplish this, three chandeliers (one antique) adorn the home as well as vintage looking door knobs and vent covers. “Blending the old with the new was important to us,” said the owner.

Vintage touches are sprinkled throughout the home, giving the new cottage an “aged” feel. The owners’ bath features marble flooring and a claw foot tub while granite countertops from Top of the World Granite complement the stylish space.

“We found several treasures at antique shops, like the stained glass windows that provide the look from days gone by,” said Waltman. Hexagon-shaped, porcelain tile reminiscent of the 1920s was used on the bathroom floors except, the owners’ bath, which features marble. Here, a claw foot tub, gives another nod to the past. Charming yet sophisticated, this cottage is a stunning masterpiece that seamlessly brings the outside in and maximizes the spectacular view of Lake Michigan. “We are in business to build the dream,” said Brinks. For these happy cottage owners, the result was worth the wait and their dream has become a reality. ❂ BUILDER Distinctive Homes ARCHITECT Visbeen Associates INTERIOR DESIGN Kimzey Waltman APPLIANCES Williams Kitchen & Bath; CABINETRY K West; CLOSET ORGANIZATION Closet Concepts; FIREPLACE Calumet Building Group; FLOORING Rivershores; FRONT ENTRY DOOR RJ Raven; GRANITE Top of the World Granite; LIGHTING Grand Rapids Lighting; OVERHEAD DOORS Zylstra; VAC SYSTEM Calumet Building Group; SECURITY EPS; WINDOWS & INTERIOR DOORS Standale Lumber 54 | ISSUE THREE 2026
