Maximizing Wealth:

Five Ways a Financial Professional May Help Propel High Earners Towards High-Net Status

The journey to prosperity involves more than just a high income. It requires strategic planning, wise investment decisions, and a keen understanding of your financial landscape. On Financial Professional Day, explore how working with a financial professional could be a gamechanger on your path toward a higher net worth.

Tailored Financial Planning

One-size-fits-all approaches rarely yield adequate results, especially when it comes to something as individual as personal finance. Skilled financial professionals take the time necessary to understand your situation, goals, and risk tolerance. They work with you to craft a personalized financial strategy that aligns with your aspirations. This strategy should also incorporate investment strategies, tax planning, and wealth preservation techniques that are tailored specifically to your needs. Investment Expertise

High earners often get their wealth through multiple income streams. This might include salaries, bonuses, investments, side hustles, and other business ventures. Navigating this complex income structure requires a deep understanding of various investment vehicles and strategies. For non-professionals, getting up to speed on your own may be difficult. A financial professional armed with market insights and economic knowledge may help you make more informed investment decisions. These professionals might be able to guide you toward opportunities that align with your goals.

Risk Mitigation

With wealth comes the need for careful risk management. A financial professional can be a risk mitigation strategist helping you identify and address potential financial pitfalls. From insurance to diversified investment portfolios, they may suggest risk management strategies for your wealth while you work toward financial goals for you and your family.

Tax Efficiency

Tax planning is a crucial aspect of wealth accumulation. High earners are more likely to face complex tax situations, and managing tax efficiency could majorly impact your net worth.

Financial professionals may help develop tax-efficient strategies through investment planning, retirement accounts, or charitable giving. By lowering your tax burden, you might retain more of your hard-earned money and put it to work for you.

Long-Term Wealth Management

Building and maintaining wealth is a marathon, not a sprint. A financial professional can play a pivotal role in long-term wealth management, continually monitoring your financial goals and adjusting your strategies. As your life evolves, your financial plan should adapt and change along with your circumstances.

Be sure to talk with a financial professional when major life events occur, such as getting married, having a baby, children going off to college, children starting a family of their own, changing jobs, moving to a new area, buying a new house, approaching retirement, or a major illness, divorce, or death occurs.

Whether you're planning for retirement, hoping to fund a loved one's education, or looking toward generational wealth accumulation and transfer, a skilled financial professional may guide you to help you pursue your financial goals and stay on track. ❂

Tennis and Pickleball Great for Lifelong Wellness

In today’s busy world, finding time for physical activity can be a challenge. But when that activity is fun, social, and improves both physical and mental health, it becomes much easier to stick with. That’s exactly what racquet sports like tennis and pickleball offer, fast-paced workouts that benefit the entire body and mind.

These sports are increasingly popular with people of all ages, and it’s easy to see why. They combine aerobic exercise, helping to boost cardiovascular endurance, increase coordination and balance, and enhance flexibility. At the same time, the quick decision-making and reflexes needed during play sharpen mental focus and cognitive function. Because these sports are typically played with others, they also provide valuable opportunities for social interaction—something closely linked to mental well-being and long-term happiness.

Tennis: A Lifetime Sport with Proven Benefits

Tennis is often referred to as a "lifetime sport" for good reason. It's a game that adapts to all ages and ability levels, whether you’re a beginner learning basic strokes or an experienced player training for competition. The sport engages the entire body through running, lateral movement, swinging, and serving—all while improving agility, coordination, and reaction time.

MVP Athletic Clubs offers tennis programs at four locations in West Michigan: Crahen and Sportsplex in Grand Rapids, along with clubs in Holland and Rockford. The facilities boast 21 indoor and 12 outdoor courts, ensuring year-round play on high-quality surfaces for everyone, from casual players to competitive athletes.

A standout feature of MVP’s tennis program is its coaching staff: 45 certified professionals who provide instruction at every level. This includes beginner through advanced clinics, high-performance coaching for juniors and adults, and more. Personalized one-on-one and small group lessons are also available to help tailor the learning experience to each player’s goals and pace.

MVP also fields several United States Tennis Association (USTA) State Championship Travel Teams, making it a regional hub for competitive tennis and its athletes.

Growing With the Game: Programs for All Ages

Whether you’re 5 or 75, there’s a way to get involved in tennis or pickleball that matches your age, skill level, and interests. MVP’s programming reflects this inclusivity. For example, young kids can start with USTA’s youth programs. As children grow, they can follow structured development tracks that prepare them for competition.

Adults can participate in a variety of offerings, from social match play and drill sessions to fitness-oriented classes like Cardio Tennis. Seasonal tournaments and events offer additional chances to meet other players and stay motivated through friendly competition.

Pickleball: The Fastest-Growing Sport in the U.S. Pickleball has exploded in popularity in recent years — and for good reason. It’s easy to learn, has a low impact on the joints, and is highly social, making it an ideal entry point for people new to racquet sports or returning after a break. Despite its ease of entry, pickleball can also be fast-paced and competitive, offering a solid physical workout and a mental challenge.

MVP Athletic Clubs has responded to this growing demand by investing in state-of-the-art facilities, including a 17,000-square-foot pickleball complex at its Crahen location in Grand Rapids. The complex features six indoor and six outdoor courts, allowing year-round play regardless of the weather.

One of the key attractions of pickleball is its emphasis on community. MVP offers open play sessions, instructional clinics, and several ladder leagues that cater to different experience levels. These leagues provide a structured environment for skill development while encouraging camaraderie and friendly rivalry.

This summer, MVP is expanding its reach with the launch of its first Pickleball Camp for kids. This fun, skill-based program helps young players get active, learn fundamentals, and build a love for the game from an early age.

Encouraging a Culture of Movement

While tennis and pickleball are a big part of what MVP offers, they’re not the whole picture. Membership at MVP includes access to a full range of fitness and wellness amenities, from strength and cardio equipment to aquatics and group exercise classes. This comprehensive approach supports members in staying active, recovering well, and maintaining long-term health.

At the heart of it all, racquet sports are about more than just hitting a ball—they’re about building confidence, community, and resilience. Whether you're looking for a weekend hobby, aiming to reach competi-

tive goals, or simply wanting to stay active in a fun and social way, tennis and pickleball offer something valuable.

With dedicated coaching, top-tier facilities, and inclusive programming, MVP Athletic Clubs is helping more people in West Michigan discover the joy and benefits of racquet sports.

Hidden GEM HOLLA ND’S

TEXT BY KIRSETIN K. MORELLO
PHOTOS BY ASHLEY AVILA

SSome homes command attention; others endure. This one manages both. Designed and built by DeHaan Homes, this home rises from its wooded setting like a private sanctuary—statuesque yet beautifully integrated into the landscape.

A Private Retreat

Winding up the long driveway, the home emerges beneath a canopy of treetops. Despite its impressive 8,000-plus square feet, the design ensures it enhances rather than overpowers its four-acre surroundings.

The homeowners searched over a year for the perfect site. When it finally hit the market, they were out of town. But after checking the location on GPS, they knew—this was the one. They purchased it sight unseen.

“It’s an absolute gem,” said Douglas DeHaan, Principal of DeHaan Homes, who they entrusted with the design/build project. From the start, DeHaan prioritized the home's connection to nature, incorporating expansive windows and a hip roofline that keeps the structure nestled beneath the trees.

Built for Gathering

DeHaan designed the home with friends and family in mind. Living spaces flow into areas designed for recreation, including a game room, home theater with a popcorn machine and candy drawer stocked for grandkids, and a golf simulator.

Outdoors, a sprawling patio offers a pool, hot tub, outdoor kitchen, firepit, and a large, manmade pond, accented with a cascading waterfall. “At night, they can grill by the pool and enjoy the backlit waterfall,” DeHaan said. “It’s stunning.”

Generations of Craftsmanship

Homebuilding is part of DeHaan’s DNA. “I grew up under the hands and feet of my grandpa, great uncles, and my dad,” he said. Though he initially pursued engineering, he was drawn to architectural design, eventually transforming DeHaan Homes into a full-service design-build firm.

That creative responsibility is both a challenge and a privilege, said DeHaan, who noted that he can often sketch a floor plan after an initial meeting to discuss clients’ lifestyles. “I think the best designers are the best listeners,” he explained.

For these homeowners, he quickly grasped their priorities — a home designed for gathering and built to last. “It’s an age-in-place design,” DeHaan explained, “barrier-free, with zero steps. They can stay here forever.”

Elegant Interiors with a Modern Twist

Guests arrive to massive custom doors—an elegant prelude to what lies beyond. Inside, checker-patterned marble in Carrara Bardiglio Gray and Carrara White creates a striking foundation. White beams form a geometric pattern in the 13-foot tray ceiling, while a suspended Glacier chandelier from Regina Andrew shimmers, its water-glass panes casting a soft glow.

“Every detail in this home was intentional. Everything was designed with a purpose.”

“The homeowners have a traditional glam style that I wanted to respect,” said Marcey Flood, principal designer at Flood Interiors. “But I also wanted the home to feel more relaxed, bright, and airy.

Flood struck a careful balance—infusing the primary wing with touches of glam, while keeping the shared spaces refined, breezy, and inviting, giving them an elevated coastal feel.

The powder room reflects this interplay with charcoal-colored wallpaper, inspired by the Florencecourt Yew of the British Isles, that lends a soft yet contemporary edge. A curved mirror contrasts with the sleek, geometric Maestro Ikon faucet in polished gold, juxtaposing oldworld charm with modern polish.

Exiting the entryway, a thin brass inlay subtly marks the transition from the marble entryway to wire-brushed European white oak. Brass appears throughout the home as a refined, elegant, thread tying spaces together.

Brass appears in many forms throughout the home as a refined, elegant, thread tying spaces together.

Flood’s approach is deeply collaborative. When she first met the homeowners, they were drawn to dark gray wood flooring with cool blue undertones. She suggested a lighter option to better complement the setting. After some deliberation, they agreed—and never looked back. “To this day,” Flood said, “they love it. In the end, I want clients to say, ‘I’m glad we made these unique decisions, but this still feels like me.’”

DeHaan complimented Flood’s gift for connection. “Marcey’s inquisitive, understands scale, and is thoughtfully persuasive,” he said. “Nothing she designs is overdone—it’s always understated elegance.”

As for partnering with DeHaan, Flood appreciated their attention to detail. “It sets them apart and made the process incredibly smooth,” she said.

For this project, DeHaan designed a grand living room with towering 12-foot ceilings, warmed by the rich wood tones of stained white oak beams. Expansive sliders frame a breathtaking backyard view, while a 1,400-plus-pound floating limestone hearth—crafted from a single slab—creates a bold architectural statement.

“To this day, they love it. In the end, I want clients to say, ‘I’m glad we made these unique decisions, but this still feels like me.’”

“The fireplace structure is limewashed, but the floating hearth is solid limestone,” Flood noted. “It took a lot of engineering!” DeHaan added. Above, the Arteriors Javier chandelier spreads its gold arms, each tipped with crystal glass shades adding a modern, sculptural elegance.

Culinary Artistry

In the adjacent kitchen, white horizontal beams stretch across the 11-foot tray ceiling, adding dimension and quiet sophistication. A striking Silestone quartz island, lightly veined with bronze and gold, commands center stage.

“Because the island is so large, we used jumbo slabs,” Flood noted. “But we still had to do seams!” Instead of concealing them, they used thin brass inlays to add a design feature with a touch of glamour.

Overhead, three Arteriors Chain Mail pendants—distressed mercury glass wrapped in antiqued brass chainmail—add texture. “The brass ties in beautifully with the custom hood and backsplash. The owner loved them from the moment I showed them to her!” Flood said.

The elegant dining room is anchored by a striking, three-tier chandelier of fluted glass and polished nickel from The Lighting Corner, that floats above a custommade table. Gray cabinetry from Ascent Fine Cabinetry and stacked midnight-glass mosaic tile add rich texture and jeweltoned depth to the space.

Seasonal Haven

Adjoining the bar, the four-season porch blends indoor and outdoor living. Dual sets of expansive sliders offer effortless versatility, from a shaded poolside retreat to a breezy, open-air space for entertaining. When temperatures drop, closing the exterior sliders and opening those to the bar creates an intimate, fireside escape, with the terrazzo-clad fireplace casting a warm glow.

DeHaan considered all these possibilities during the design phase. “Every detail in this home was intentional. Everything was designed with a purpose,” he said.

A challenge arose mid-installation, when the homeowners pivoted and decided they wanted the same tile in the pool shower’s niche as had been installed on the shower walls. “I contacted the manufacturer to order more and the tile had been discontinued. There was none left!” shared Flood. “Our amazing representative tracked down another designer who was willing to share their order, so we could complete the shower.”

That intentionality is evident. The same Northern Michigan-quarried stone used on the home’s façade extends to the pool and pond areas, reinforcing a seamless connection between architecture and nature.

Vesta Chandelier shimmers above a custom La Marca Paradiso Argento mosaic tile inset that creates a striking “rug” underfoot.

“The homeowner loved those little touches,” explained Flood. “We kept the mosaic in the same tile family as the rest of the flooring, so the colors flow throughout.”

Custom white cabinetry and chrome Brizo fixtures add refinement, while a Kohler Sunstruck freestanding tub adds graceful curves. A Possini Euro Latham Chrome Chandelier sparkles above, completing the room’s polished ambiance.

Enduring Beauty

As with much of the home, the primary suite frames nature’s beauty. “Landscaping wasn’t an afterthought, it was an integral part of the design,” DeHaan said. “We considered every detail and developed the landscape plan with Hollandia as we developed the house plans.”

That intentionality is evident. The same Northern Michigan-quarried stone used on the home’s façade extends to the pool and pond areas, reinforcing a seamless connection between architecture and nature.

With meticulous craftsmanship and a collaborative spirit, DeHaan has created a home that is both breathtaking and deeply inviting. Designed for comfort—whether in quiet solitude or lively gatherings—it offers modern ease within a stunning natural backdrop. Enduring and elegant, it’s a home built to be cherished for generations.

Roads Country Take Me Home ...

FFor professionals Joe and Leah, almost heaven in Southwestern Michigan is the dream of a country style contemporary home on an expansive parcel of property befitting their relaxed lifestyle and expanding extended family. Their 10-acre slice of heaven, purchased in 2021 with downsizing in mind, is located equally distanced from Mattawan and Texas Corners, just a stone's throw from Metropolitan Kalamazoo.

Leah shared, “Joe grew up on a dairy farm in Kentucky and always wanted to return to having property at some point … This area is a great combination of feeling rural, yet still close to civilization.”

Joe first had a color matching barn built on the back of the property primarily for storage, yet he also dedicated space for a pub style man cave and an additional area for their business. For recreational purposes, they recently added an adjacent pickleball court.

The couple collaborated with architect Chuck Posthumus in 2021 to create their perfect plan. “Chuck understood our vision of large windows and an open concept kitchen,” said Leah. “And, with Covid price increases, he worked very hard to help us reduce the total cost.”

Posthumus grew up in Chicago which is considered the “City of Architecture” that features many of Frank Lloyd Wright’s treasured creations. This early interest led him to study Architecture at the University of Illinois. From 1972 to 1981, Posthumus designed educational and commercial buildings across the globe. He opened a small practice, Posthumus Architects, in 1982, housed in the lower level of his renovated downtown Grand Rapids home. Leaning toward unique commercial and custom home designs, Chuck is focussed on providing his clientele with personal interaction, inventive creativity along with environmental and fiscal efficiency.

The clients and Posthumus were both familiar with the Hill Country Texas (HCT) style of home found in the rugged hills of Central and South Texas just north of San Antonio. This design is still a hybrid with hints of Old World, contemporary farmhouse, and Scandinavian styles. HCT contains the contrast of steel and stone while it also has the telltale overlapping metal up and over saddleback roof line that leads from the front to the back of the home with stone pillars defining the flow.

“We gravitate towards modern farmhouse style,” said Leah. “And the topography of the property lent itself to a perfect ranch design with a lower level for our adult children and our grandchildren.” Being Physical Therapists, it was a practical decision to include universal design allowing them to age in place with zero entries at the porch and garage, wider doors and hallways, and large, flush walk-in showers.

To tailor their plan, Daniel Molnar, owner of Molnar Construction, was chosen to make their dreams a reality. Molnar takes pride in building with the most energy efficient materials and modern building techniques allowing for longterm durability and lowered maintenance costs. Leah and Joe were drawn to him by the quality of his earlier projects and his positive relationships with area subcontractors and tradesmen.

“Home is where it all starts — where you rest, where you land, where you inspire your family.”

Molnar was involved in the building industry from the age of 13, making home construction his lifelong goal. After working for numerous construction companies, in 2004, at the age of 22, he took a leap of faith in his ability and started his own company to pursue his dream. To exceed client’s expectations, Molnar maintains a core of select, talented craftsmen. To ensure his promise that projects stay on schedule and are cost efficient, Molnar has his own inhouse excavators, cement crew and electricians.

Molnar had golfed with Joe over the last few years, so he literally enjoyed working with him. Molnar shared, “We moved nearly 25,000 yards of soil on this project, and Joe was in a frontend loader helping the entire time.”

Along with providing custom homes, Molnar has also entered the niche market of Barndominium construction which has gained recent popularity throughout Michigan. The Barndominium, like Joe’s rear barn, can stand alone or as a hybrid, auxiliary building satisfying versatile needs for storage and shop space or complete living quarters and recreational gathering spaces. Molnar can customize the plan to meet the needs of any lifestyle often with a rustic aesthetic.

“Dan’s willingness to make changes and adjustments made the process seamless,” said Leah. Adding that another huge plus was that he

Arched entrances lead through to a spacious butler’s pantry featuring Pewter Green cabinetry, open shelving, brass light fixtures and a second refrigerator. The green of the cabinets and white marble countertops are blended using Borastapeter wall covering with flecks of gold that also tie in the fixtures.

welcomed their choice for design specialist, Anna Sondergard.

The owners’ connection with Anna began many years ago when she was a patient after a high school sports injury. From there, she was entrusted as a nanny for their children becoming an endeared family friend. After watching her career blossom in Pittsburgh, they were thrilled to discover she was shifting back to Michigan so they could work with her in person.

Sondergard, owner and principal designer of Anna Joy Interiors, believes, “Home is where it all starts — where you rest, where you land, where you inspire your family.” Anna Joy Interiors is founded on the principle that every home should be a stunning reflection of the owners’ personal style. Since 2017, Anna Joy has created spaces leading to joy-filled lives by collaborating with clients, architects and builders on every stage of home construction from early concept pre-planning to the final handing over the keys and beyond.

Anna’s Grandfather was a noted builder/developer in the Kalamazoo area, so she grew up in the industry. As a youngster she helped clean the new homes, readying them for the owners. She admits she has never grown tired of that “new

house smell.” Anna has since collaborated with an uncle to build her parents’ home in 2024.

To ensure a smooth, satisfying experience, she assists in a cohesive design of materials, finishes and architectural details creating spaces with elegant simplicity and sensible functionality. Anna Joy services range from ground-up new construction, major renovations and updated room redesigns. She achieves clear client communication through in person and Zoom conferencing to adapt to her clients’ busy schedules. She feels her background in graphic design and business has been a significant part of her continued success.

“Every project I take on is very hands-on,” said Anna. “I love that every job is different, and while I have a process, I’m able to tailor it to my client. Every time I wrap a project, it feels like I’m saying goodbye to family!”

Leah shared, “No pun intended, she truly was a ‘joy’ to work with in creating our dream home. She uniquely found a balance with not only costs but also overall design details. Anna was helpful through all the decision making from the architectural design and functionality to kitchen design and decor selections.”

Dan Molnar added, “Anna was simply awesome. She’s very knowledgeable and timely with selections and assistance.” Adding in short, “She has great taste.”

The architect echoed their sentiments, “I enjoyed the elements Anna brought to the home. In fact, I’m excited to be working with her on a second project!”

Approaching from the north, the home gently rises out of a sea of green grass in a “Dog Leg” configuration on a slight berm. The natural surface drive yields to a cement turn around court allowing direct access to the stunning, centered, pillared porch. The topography settles to the left exposing the lower level using angled cement wing retaining walls tastefully accented by a minimalistic landscape scheme with an expansive lush lawn created by landscape designer Joe Prenkert of Instant Gratification Landscaping.

Initially mowing the acreage with a 5-foot mower deck was a seven hour chore, recently Joe moved up to a compact tractor to expedite the job completing the motif of a gentleman farmer.

An early concern was siting the home perfectly so as not to see anything but the countryside. The direction of the building envelope and set back were adjusted, so even the back porch was private.

The center roofline steps down toward each wing with several staggered gabled peaks. The front facade is a mix of brown hued horizontal and vertical siding with Old World toupe stone wall sections accented with massive banks of dark Low E windows that look through to the

rear of the property; several clever stone arched castle style windows and tasteful corbel bracketing add interest.

The aforementioned 14-foot wide sitting porch with a soaring metal shed roof, supported by four massive stone columns, features double custom glass entry doors with transom windows. Custom metal side railings and twin gas carriage lights complete the look. The front walk and threshold are designed for a zero step entry with 60 inches of clearance.

Passing through the entry into the nearly 3,000square-feet of the upper level, visitors are received in a modest foyer with a 12-foot ceiling and double facing closets. The gray tone wooden floors stretch out past a stairwell to the inner home where varied paneled walls add flair through the use of textural changes. Creative lighting selections tease as to what lies within.

In the great hall living area, eyes are dramatically drawn upward to a whimsical pendant light centered on the wooden peak beam of the 18foot sloped ceiling. The rear glass wall of dark accented windows, which mimic those on the front of the home, provide an unobstructed view of the property.

To the rear of the mudroom, a Dutch door secures access to a pet friendly dog wash station.

wooden mantle honed from a piece of wood from the property and twin bracketing lower built-ins balances the focal point of the room positively impacting character.

Leah commissioned artwork to be placed above the fireplace built-ins through Astuary Art by Marissa Recker after seeing Marissa’s work at a show in Chicago. Leah provided the basic colors, and Recker created two pieces to create an eye pleasing pop of color.

At the end of their hectic day, with the lights down low and a fire softly burning, the couple admits it’s always great to be back home again.

Looking to the right, a 12-foot ceiling treatment defines the dedicated dining area, large enough to easily accommodate their growing family. There is a direct rear access to a 400-square-foot screened porch offering other dining and entertainment opportunities. The porch, once again, supports the continued masonry theme. The porch exits outdoors to a ground level circular patio with a gas fire pit muted with accent landscaping.

“I love that every job is different, and while I have a process, I’m able to tailor it to my client. Every time I wrap a project, it feels like I’m saying goodbye to family!”

“The expansive screened-in porch, which runs the majority of the length of the house, is where we choose to spend most of our time,” said Leah.

Whether it’s sunshine on their shoulders or stars raining light from the night’s sky, the country ambiance of the outdoor living space fills up their senses with soothing country comfort.

To the side of the dining area, lies a cozy country kitchen featuring a marble topped island done in gray hues with seating for four, along with a continuation of the Old World stone aesthetic and a convenient libation station. Light oak upper and lower custom cabinetry, with selected upper glass door accents over contrasting dark lateral countertops, finish the look.

“I am very particular when it comes to kitchen and pantry design … They are so important to the function of the home,” said Anna. “Leah and Joe are fabulous entertainers, so they wanted a nice space to cook. Originally the plans were very different … I suggested we put a full wall to offer privacy and give us a space for the

big range and extra cabinetry … We also added 12 feet of counter space under the windows to put food out for guests.”

Posthumus added that the interior cobble wall accents are quite unique. The HCT style often includes using a white wash to enhance the look of the stone pushing back the darker tones to create a subtle aged or weathered effect.

Continuing the arch window concept of the front castle windows, double arched doorways lead through a back tiled patio hallway to a spacious butler’s pantry featuring SW Pewter Green cabinetry, open shelving, microwave, dishwasher, brass lighting fixtures and second refrigerator. The green of the cabinets and white marble countertops are blended using Borastapeter wall covering with flecks of gold that also tie in the fixtures.

“This is actually one of my favorite bathrooms I’ve designed to date. It functions as the powder room whenever they have guests, so I wanted it to be dramatic ...”

Sondergard added, “Because of our butler’s pantry with extensive storage space, we were able to do a dramatic, Italian-inspired stone wall in the kitchen with very high windows to let in more light.”

On the opposite side of the great hall, through another arched doorway, the east wing of the home is found. Through a privacy vestibule lies a complete powder room with single vanity, floor-to-ceiling gray marble vertical tile and walk-in shower.

Anna confessed, “This is actually one of my favorite bathrooms I’ve designed to date. It functions as the powder room whenever they have guests, so I wanted it to be dramatic … Believe it or not, a powder room is one of the first places guests will form an opinion about the rest of your house, and this one is a great conversation starter!”

She continued, “Leah and I joked throughout the process about styles … she has a much more bold and crazy style than I do. Leah and Joe were always open to me pushing the limits and getting them out of their comfort zone. Sometimes it was a chore to come to an agreement we both liked, but it was always good fun and wasn’t awkward given we have known each other for so long.”

The home gently rises out of a sea of green grass in a “Dog Leg” configuration on a slight berm. The natural-surface drive yields to a cement turn around court allowing direct access to the centered, pillared porch. The topography settles to the left exposing the lower level using retaining walls, tastefully accented by a minimalistic landscape scheme .

Leah countered, “Anna loves neutrals but helped us integrate some of the ‘wilder’ colors and designed features. The powder room, in particular, is stunning! Her choice of accent tile to go along with the fluted, floating sink we ordered from Turkey and the dark, moody overall grey color makes a statement.”

A carpeted secondary bedroom suite completes the wing, featuring a wall of windows facing the rear of the property along with a bank of side windows that look to the wooded treeline.

The west wing of the home, toward the three stall garage, is accessed to the right of the foyer. The herringbone tiled hall first passes the aforementioned patio access hallway to the left then makes a privacy ensuring jog before reaching a doorway leading into the primary suite.

“We gravitate towards modern farmhouse style. And, the topography of the property lent itself to a perfect ranch design with a lower level for our adult children and our grandchildren.”

The carpeted primary features a 15-foot peaked ceiling treatment, lovely custom millwork and a cozy sitting area looking out to the back of the property. A clever addition to the nook was a hidden doorway to the butler’s pantry perfect for quick access to the coffee bar. Off to the side, the design includes a spacious custom hisand-her, walk-in closet with a convenient secondary washer and dryer.

The primary bath is an elegant oasis with high ceilings, double vanity, a wall of storage cabinetry, walk-in shower and privacy compartment. Leah explained, “Another favorite part of our home is our master shower with large, porcelain, marble-looking tile toned down by tile, woodlooking accent walls and no glass door, just entirely a flush walk-in.” Toe-kick lighting under the vanity promotes a spa-like feel.

Continuing to the garage, the front hallway passes a small office and an access door to a front patio to the right. To the left is a convenient mudroom with ample storage for outdoor gear. To the rear of the mudroom, a Dutch door secures access to a pet friendly dog wash station.

“A unique design element is our dog room for Boone and Maggie,” said Leah. “We built the dog shower waist high to avoid bending over saving our backs and a door from their room leads out to a large, fenced AstroTurf dog run.”

A 400-square-foot screened porch offers other dining and entertainment opportunities. The porch exits outdoors to a ground level circular patio with a gas fire pit muted with accent landscaping.

In the garage, a secondary, practical stairway drops to the mechanical and storage areas of the lower level.

Primary, indoor access to the lower level is made via the earlier mentioned front foyer stairway. Once again, with an eye for detail, the custom wooden Newel post and rail with metal spindles complement the side lit wooden treads. The padded runner lands safely below near a carpeted family room.

A hallway to the east wing of the lower level leads to three additional bedrooms, one of which has a bunk area to house the little ones. All rooms feature daylight windows providing safety egress and plenty of natural light. There are also two full baths bookending a laundry room. The first bath can be shared by the family room and first bedroom. The rear two bedrooms share the other with its kid-friendly bathtub.

Daniel Molnar summed it up, “This project went quite smoothly. It’s a beautiful home and one I am very proud of.” It’s obvious that the entire team meshed in creating Joe and Leah’s forever home.

Posthumus added, “They are a wonderful couple with great interaction. They were totally in the game knowing what they wanted. There was never any tension, and their teamwork was super flexible allowing both to take the lead at times. Instead of repeating a design, they knew which road to go down. Their finished home turned out how I hoped it would. For me it was a welcomed adventure and truly a joy to see.”

Leah jokingly shared her thought of putting a project donation bucket by the road to fund their “costly adventure,” but, in reality, they did find the project to be enjoyable yet challenging. Spending extensive time and thought during the planning phase was crucial, and after living in the home for almost a year, the list of any potential changes is short.
