Oh Giorgio ! On a bright October day, I saw my friend Giorgio Forgani, professional makeup artist at Pupa Milano, when he was passing through Montreal. Giorgio was presenting the brand’s new collection of makeup products as part of an exclusive master class. And it was on the magnificent face of Quebec celebrity Mariana Bastarache that he demonstrated his art. Beauty appointment with the King of Brushes!

Which makeup trends are on their way up? Which colours and styles should we try?
A : Transparency is the name of the game for makeup for the new season. So the skin has to be glowing. The latest colour palette features various shades of brown, creating shadows on the eyelids, cheeks and lips. This 1990s-inspired monochromatic style has a modern twist that gives makeup an alluring look.

Is there a trend that we saw a lot of in 2023 that we should ditch in 2024?
A : In 2024, we’ll see eye shadow being used more to create very soft shades and more nuanced looks. We’ll see less eyeliner around the eyes.

The Pantone colour of 2023 is Viva Magenta, a crimson red. Does it inspire you when creating makeup?
A : Totally! It’s one of my favourite colours, and when I create a new lipstick with Pupa Milano, I almost always take inspiration for a shade from that colour. It’s even currently found in monochrome eye shadows or eye palettes and it produces incredible chromatic reflections on the iris.

How would you describe your style as a professional makeup artist?
A : Makeup is a wonderful tool that allows you to bring out the best in yourself. I don’t like distorting someone’s face. I work to highlight their better qualities and balance what I consider less harmonious. So I would say that I am an aesthete entirely devoted to beauty.
Q
What makeup you have created that you are most proud of?
A : My experience as a makeup artist has given me profound satisfaction. For example, I look back on the makeup I did for Naomi Campbell as one of the most exciting moments of my career. And today I am particularly proud of creating Pupa Milano makeup products, from the initial idea to their final realization.

How would you describe beauty today? Is it really more inclusive, more instinctive, and ready to cheerfully defy the rules?
A : I’m very happy that, thanks to social media, everyone now has the opportunity to express themselves through makeup. Beauty today is expressed in many different ways by many different people. Sharing can help you learn a lot of secrets that effectively improve your appearance. So I would say that beauty today is sharing knowledge which allows each of us to maximize what we have without breaking the bank, something that Pupa Milano knows is important to people and has taken into consideration with its products. CLARINS is launching a new skincare line based on a rare flower, the vanilla cactus, also known as “the Queen of the Night”. Marie-Hélène Lair, Director of Responsible Innovation at Clarins, explains to us why this line is so… Precious!

Q : Why the name Precious? A : What inspired the creators of this new Clarins skincare line was the concept of rarity, which makes the ingredients themselves very precious as well as their fragrance and even the packaging of the final product. Our Precious line is aimed at women looking for exceptional formulas that also represent luxury and pure pleasure. Q : Cryoextraction has been used in the formulation. Can you explain what that is? A : The brand’s research team was able to use this exceptional technology, which makes it possible to extract and keep intact the fragile active molecules deep within the chosen West Indian cactus flower: the Queen of the Night. Immersed in liquid nitrogen at -196° Celsius,

it produces a powerful and unique organic extract. Q : Tell us about this so-called Queen of the Night and the benefits it provides to the skin. A : Queen of the Night extract helps regenerate the skin by stimulating one of its FOXO transcription factors. The protein in question is called the “longevity gene”. It’s essential for collagen synthesis and helps to firm the skin. Q : Which skin types does it target? A : Precious does not target a particular skin type. Its velvet-soft formulas appeal to the senses and are aimed at all women. Q : The new Precious line promises instant radiance, lift and
density. How do these precious skincare products differ from others already on the market? A : Their effectiveness has been proven by a scientific publication detailing how Queen of the Night extract stimulates FOXO. This biological effect takes three weeks to become visible on the skin’s surface. However, using the line is a sensory experience and once applied, there is an immediate improvement in terms of radiance, feel and apparent density. Q : The advertising for Precious mentions “rare” science and “sustainable” luxury. Can you tell us more about this? A : The rarity embodied by Precious is linked to the activity of the Queen of the Night, a sublime cactus flower which blooms only once a year. Now

that’s a scientific discovery, isn’t it? The application protocol for the Precious products was created for Clarins by Marie de Poulain. She is a graduate of the University of Perpignan and also took lessons in kopido from Master Shogo Mochizuki as well as lessons in “sculptural face lifting” from Dr. Yakov Gershkovich, experts whose art flirts with science. And finally, Precious containers are made of an alloy which until now was only used in the automotive industry. One of its advantages is that it’s recyclable. Q : What does innovation look like in the luxury cosmetics world of Clarins?
A : Innovation at Clarins can naturally produce breakthroughs, as is the case for Precious, a very cutting-edge line. But our laboratories also follow another approach: permanent innovation. It allows us to enhance our existing lines with the latest scientific discoveries and the latest generations of ingredients or formulations. Q : Thanks to technological advancement as well as the most cutting-edge advances in scientific research, the products created are increasingly effective. How many applications of the new Precious line do you need to obtain a noticeable result?
