The Season Of All

Possibilities There is nothing quite like a sure thing in uncertain times, and this issue is packed with exceptional beauty news. Our annual Beauty’s Best Awards is celebrating its 25th anniversary – an incredible milestone saluted across the Canadian industry. We will mark the occasion with an Oscar-style gala taking place on October 30th in Toronto. We have been working on this event since the beginning of the year, and the anticipation builds with every passing day. From collecting nominations and assembling our expert judging panel to tallying the finalists’ results, it has been an unforgettable journey. Each year, I look forward to this event and the opportunity to connect with the trailblazers we celebrate – those who elevate the beauty industry, champion breakthrough products, and educate consumers. You can discover the Beauty’s Best finalists on page 38, and I eagerly await the fabulous evening where the winners will be revealed. Of course, Cosmetics magazine is also dedicated to the fall season’s key launches, trends, and looks. If there is one thing consumers, retailers, and beauty marketers are seeking right now, it is good

news. Following countless launch appointments, press trips, industry encounters, and hundreds of rigorous product tests, it is safe to say this is one of the most exciting beauty seasons in recent memory. We are seeing a powerful combination of innovation, efficacy, and a much-needed dose of whimsy. Global turbulence seems to have brought the industry into sharper focus, resulting in finely honed, high-performing launches across all categories. From boldly designed fragrances – because now is the perfect time to smell fabulous – to vibrant makeup palettes and cutting-edge skincare, the choices are refreshingly eclectic. While Cosmetics offers an escape from the mundane, we also pride ourselves on being a publication that connects pure beauty to a wider world view. I cannot wait for you to dive in.

FALL 2026

A ten-year journey of a scent born to empower. BY VÂNIA AGUIAR

Carolina Herrera’s Good Girl is, without overstatement, one of the most popular fragrances on the planet. Even if it doesn’t grace your vanity, chances are you’ve caught its intoxicating sillage on a stranger or spotted that iconic stiletto silhouette on your social feeds, in department stores, or on a friend’s shelf. Now, celebrating a monumental decade of olfactory success, the fashion house has launched its latest obsession in January 2026: Good Girl Jasmine Absolute. Good Girl has always been much more than a sky-high heel. That famous bottle is a visual manifesto of modern femininity and empowerment – ideals that the juice inside radiates flawlessly. While the original blueprint has inspired countless dupes and spawned multiple iterations Jasmine Absolute carves out its own decadent niche. This new chapter amplifies the original formula’s gourmand and jasmine layers, brightened by a sophisticated splash of bergamot top notes. It is rare for Carolina Herrera’s scent wardrobe to lean more opulent than strictly floral, but Jasmine Absolute embraces the dark and delicious. It is as rich and resinous as the playful brand gets, anchored by roasted tonka bean and bitter almond. Black currant and mandarin inject a sharp, juicy burst of tart fruitiness, balanced beautifully by a lingering, velvety trail of jasmine and sweet toffee. It doesn’t just sit on the skin; it leaves an unforgettable impression. An iconic juice demands an equally iconic bottle – and an undeniable ambassador. Enter supermodel Karlie Kloss. The ultimate embodiment of the Good Girl ethos,

Kloss perfectly captures the duality of the modern woman. As the face of the franchise since its inception in 2016, the 33-year-old changemaker has starred in a decade of dazzling campaigns, effortlessly evolving alongside the brand’s best-selling line. But Kloss’s alignment with Carolina Herrera goes far deeper than a flawless runway stride. She doesn’t just give good soundbites on social change or preach activism from her grid; she actively builds it. The supermodel is a powerhouse philanthropist and entrepreneur. From her early days launching Karlie’s Kookies for the FEED Foundation to combat malnutrition, to her groundbreaking Kode With Klossy camps – which began as a summer scholarship for 20 girls and non-binary youth and has since evolved into a massive global movement –Kloss is rewriting the rules of influence. The Carolina Herrera team can take immense pride in being an early champion and funder of Kode With Klossy, offering a compelling reason for progressive beauty consumers to support the brand. Kloss continues to expand her empire of impact with her debut children’s book, The Spaghetti Code, a joyful tale about problem-solving, pasta, and the power of big ideas designed to inspire the next generation of tech innovators. Ultimately, Carolina Herrera and Good Girl urge us to step out of our comfort zones, champion our beliefs, and lift other women up. Paired with Kloss’s fierce intellect and philanthropic heart, this dynamic duo proves that beauty is at its most powerful when it has a purpose.

the profile

A game-changer for blondes, an innovative new hair care line formulated specifically to deliver more luminous, longer-lasting colour, plus much-needed hydration, is made right here in Canada. “Many brands have one, two or maybe three products for blondes, but we felt that developing a range specifically for that segment has a lot of potential,” says Ilan Cohen, CEO of Oligo Professionnel, the Montrealbased parent company of Blacklight Blonde Science. Covering both in-salon and at-home care, the robust collection is formulated around the premise that blonde hair isn’t just lighter. “It behaves differently,” explains Anton Ranchin, VP of Marketing, “Blonde is more porous, more sensitized, and far more particular about what it’s willing to hold onto – moisture, colour, shine. This is a system engineered around the actual chemistry of lightened hair.” While Cohen focuses on sales and marketing, he works alongside his brothers Raphy (who oversees operations) and Ronen (who handles finance and accounting). Together, the trio are carrying on the family business that was founded by their parents, Moty and Liliane, in 1986. The duo started out by researching and developing salon-exclusive hair care for other companies. “The whole concept of healthier, safer products for stylists, but also for guests, is what really inspired them,” Cohen says, “Back in the day, the scalp was not a trend like it is today, but nonetheless, we’ve always formulated for hair and scalp.” A chartered accountant by trade, Cohen grew up working in Oligo’s warehouse and production plant but never intended to step fully aboard. “I’m the oldest brother, but the second to join the business,” he notes. As a wave of consolidation in the professional beauty industry allowed

major corporations to acquire many distributors, an opportunity to expand the business, and his role in it, arose. Cohen was named CEO 12 years ago and has zero regrets. “I took a leap of faith and it’s the best thing I ever did,” he says, “It’s a lot more fun building brands than doing accounting, at least for me.” Today Oligo Professionnel solely manufacturers their own products, including award-winning salon hair colour that’s a top-seller in North America. Looking ahead, Cohen is excited to grow Blacklight Blonde Science into an international power player and tackle the fresh challenge of connecting directly to consumers. “It’s finding the right balance between how to message to a stylist in the salon environment and how to message to a consumer in their shower, or where they take care of their hair,” he says, “It’s two different approaches, we’re having fun learning and adapting.” Reshaping the blonde care narrative, especially as it pertains to neutralizing unwanted tones, is key. Blacklight Blonde Science offers a full maintenance system of both blue and violet shampoo, conditioner and leavein sprays. “This is genuinely a category with a learning curve,” says Ranchin, “Used incorrectly, colour-correcting products can overcorrect just as easily as they fix, so we invest real energy in educating both consumers and professionals on how to dose and time them properly.” In the distant future, a third generation may carry on the legacy. “I would love that,” says Cohen, who has two teenagers, “One of the biggest joys I’ve had in my life is working with my parents for over 10 years and it would be a great honor to be able to work with my kids one day, too.”

A New

Million

Era Boasting a new tropical freshness and a sexy new ambassador – hot model Thatcher Thornton – the iconic 1 Million franchise looks to push the speedometer beyond its limits. With the launch of 1 Million Black, the brand aims to capture the spirit of living life to the max! Perfumers Christophe Raynaud and Quentin Bisch tell us all about it. BY VÂNIA AGUIAR

When crafting this fragrance, how did you stay true to the 1 Million DNA while breaking fresh ground? We wanted to respect the established Million codes – the play on contrast and the strong sense of identity – while simultaneously exploring new olfactory territory. Our goal was to maintain the unmistakable Million energy, but express it through a fresher, more vibrant, and more exotic dimension. COSMETICSMAG.COM

FALL 2026

What was your greatest challenge when composing 1 Million Black? The challenge was to renew the 1 Million universe without repeating it. We wanted to bring a new kind of freshness and addiction, balancing a fruity vibrancy with a deep, sensual structure.

Can you describe the key ingredients that define 1 Million Black’s signature?

We built the fragrance around three main pillars: pineapple, vanilla, and ebony wood. The pineapple accord brings an immediate burst of radiance; its vivid and exotic character uplifts the entire composition. The vanilla, deployed in an XXL trio, blends richness, depth, and smoother, milky facets, creating a warm and addictive texture that resonates through the heart and base. Finally, ebony wood anchors the fragrance with a darker, more elegant strength. It offers a dense woody structure with resinous and

leathery nuances, enhancing the perfume’s long-lasting sensuality. Together, these ingredients trace a line of contrast, from luminous fruitiness to enveloping warmth. This contrast is what defines 1 Million Black’s distinctive identity.

while keeping it fully aligned with today’s codes of masculine perfumery.

In what ways does 1 Million Black follow in the footsteps of its predecessors while still asserting its originality?

Fragrance is a way to express yourself, to feel confident and distinctive every day. A fragrance can communicate who you are, even before you speak – like a personal signature. When someone tells you that you smell good, it creates an instant emotional connection; a subtle yet powerful affirmation of presence and personality. These are the emotions and sensations we want the wearer to experience when wearing 1 Million Black.

1 Million Black reimagines the emblematic energy of the original 1 Million Eau de Toilette in a more exotic and contemporary way. It trades the spicy leathery boldness of the first edition for a vibrant fruity freshness, in which pineapple and vanilla woods create a new kind of sensual warmth. Next to 1 Million Elixir, which celebrates opulent depth through rich florals and amber woods, 1 Million Black expresses a brighter, more transparent sensuality built around juicy pineapple and luminous woody facets. Together, these differences reaffirm the shared DNA of the line – power, contrast, and sensuality – while allowing 1 Million Black to speak with its own voice.

XXL vanilla is at the heart of the fragrance: why did you choose to take this ingredient to such a high level of intensity? We wanted to amplify the sensual dimension at the base of the fragrance. By pushing the vanilla to such an extreme level, we were able to preserve its warmth and texture

What emotions or sensations did you want the wearer to experience when using 1 Million Black?

expressive, where brightness, color, and sensuality coexist naturally. The fruity dimension brings a contemporary freshness that speaks to younger audiences.

How would you describe 1 Million Black in three words? Exotic, vibrant, and sensual.

This fragrance has very longlasting performance (48h). How did you achieve this? We designed a structure to be instantly recognizable, with a long-lasting, controlled diffusion. Using technologies such as TrailAir, we measured and refined the scent trail to ensure a lasting presence without heaviness. We are committed to ensuring that consumers are never disappointed and that the scent feels memorable.

How does 1 Million Black reinterpret modern masculinity for a new generation? It reflects a more open idea of masculinity that is confident yet

New Season, New Skincare! Alongside the skin’s natural aging process, certain factors such as sun, pollution, stress or poor lifestyle habits contribute to the appearance of wrinkles and a loss of firmness. As to when to start using your first anti-wrinkle cream, dermatologists recommend beginning at age 25, as cell renewal starts to slow down then, soon leading to the appearance of the first expression lines. When signs of aging become more pronounced, it is time to switch to an anti-wrinkle product designed for mature skin, which is more concentrated in active ingredients capable of reducing wrinkles, or even an anti-aging cream that will also tackle other concerns, including dark spots. To combat and prevent wrinkles and loss of firmness as effectively as possible, here are the best creams available on the market. Whether they’re inspired by aesthetic medicine or enriched with super ingredients, you’ll find them in this guide dedicated exclusively to the new season’s offers.

Salicylic Acid

The Clear Skin Reset Why this pore-purifying ingredient deserves a place in your autumn skincare rotation. BY LUCA PHILLIPS

As the seasons shift and summer gives way to cooler weather, many skincare routines begin to change as well. The lingering effects of humidity, sunscreen, and increased oil production can leave skin feeling congested, making autumn an ideal time to reset. For many, that means reaching for salicylic acid: an ingredient known for helping to clear pores and refine skin without relying on harsh scrubs or abrasive exfoliation. Salicylic acid belongs to a group of ingredients known as beta hydroxy acids (BHAs). Unlike water-soluble exfoliating acids, it is oil-soluble, allowing it to travel deeper into the pore where excess sebum and dead skin cells tend to accumulate. By breaking down this buildup, salicylic acid helps reduce blackheads, whiteheads, and blemishes while supporting a clearer-looking complexion over time. Its benefits extend beyond managing breakouts. Regular use can help refine skin texture, minimize the appearance of clogged pores, and reveal smoother, more radiant skin. Because it works by dissolving the bonds between dead skin cells rather than physically buffing them away, it offers a more effective COSMETICSMAG.COM

alternative to traditional face scrubs, which can sometimes be overly abrasive. As with any active skincare ingredient, consistency is more important than overuse. Many salicylic acid cleansers, serums, and leave-on treatments contain different concentrations. If you’re new to the ingredient or have sensitive skin, consider starting with a gentle cleanser or a low-strength formula a few times a week before progressing to leaveon treatments. Stronger formulas are often better suited to oily or blemish-prone skin that is already accustomed to chemical exfoliants. Following with a moisturizer can also help support the skin barrier while minimizing dryness. Although salicylic acid can be used year-round, it can be especially helpful as part of a fall skincare refresh. With cooler temperatures and less intense sun exposure in many regions, skin may be better positioned to tolerate exfoliating ingredients while recovering from the demands of summer. Used consistently, it can help keep pores clear and skin looking smoother and more balanced as the seasons change.

THE ORDINARY Salicylic Acid 2% Exfoliating Acne Solution, $8,69, Available at The Ordinary This gentle exfoliating gel toner is formulated to clear pores, smooth texture, and calm visible redness. By The Numbers Prestige Beauty Growth Remains Strong as Canadians Prioritize Wellness, Efficacy and Affordable Indulgence. BY ALECSANDRA HANCAS

Canada’s prestige beauty industry continues to be among the top performing industries in the first half of 2026, growing 6% yearover-year to $2.2 billion despite ongoing economic uncertainties. As consumers become more intentional with their spending, beauty remains a resilient industry, fueled by demand for products that support wellness, deliver proven results, and provide accessible moments of self-care and indulgence. Hair was the industry’s fastestgrowing category, with sales up

CATEGORY

+23%, driven by surging demand for hair serums, scalp-focused treatments, and daily care routines. Skincare grew +6% as consumers gravitated toward efficacy-driven products, while makeup increased +4%, supported by innovation and e-commerce sales growth. Although fragrance growth moderated to +1%, consumer engagement remains strong, with shoppers investing in higher-concentration scents and expanding fragrance rituals into adjacent body care categories. As beauty and wellness continue to converge, brands that successfully combine performance, innovation, authenticity, and value will be best positioned to win with today’s increasingly selective consumer.

The

Future of Luxury

Today, luxury is measured not by what we own, but by how an experience or object contributes to our well-being, self-discovery, and identity. According to Genny Hogg, Holt Renfrew’s Divisional Vice President of Beauty & Lifestyle, consumers are actively seeking curation and exploration, making a dynamic, immersive in-store experience more vital than ever. BY VÂNIA AGUIAR

FALL 2026

What key trends in luxury retail do you see emerging in 2026 and beyond? We’re seeing luxury becoming increasingly experience-led, discovery-driven and personalized. Clients are looking for more than a product: they want access to newness, exclusivity, expertise and experiences that give them a reason to engage with us both instore and digitally. In Beauty, we’re seeing strong demand for innovation-led skincare and beauty technology, alongside continued

momentum in K-Beauty and premium hair. Clients are also increasingly knowledgeable, ingredient-aware and results-focused, changing how they discover and evaluate products. Niche fragrance continues to be a significant growth area, driven by a desire for individuality, discovery, craftsmanship and a more personal connection to scent. Beyond product, the “joy economy” is becoming increasingly important. Clients are looking for moments that feel exciting,

cosmetics x holt renfrew

immersive and worth leaving home for. The opportunity for luxury retail is to turn shopping from a transaction into an experience – combining exceptional product, discovery and service in a way that feels memorable and differentiated.

How can the luxury sector stay competitive by balancing tradition and innovation, particularly with advancements in AI, e-commerce, and the metaverse? At Holt Renfrew, our perspective is that luxury will continue to be defined by high service and hightouch experiences. As technology becomes increasingly integrated into our lives, we believe consumers are becoming more discerning about what feels artificial versus what feels genuinely human. The in-person consultation remains incredibly personal and intimate. The experience of being understood by another person, receiving thoughtful recommendations, and discovering something new cannot always be replicated digitally. The pandemic accelerated digital adoption, but it also reinforced how deeply people value human connection and physical experiences.

Our approach is therefore not to resist innovation, but to use it thoughtfully. We will continue to embrace innovation across product, digital, e-commerce, and client experience, all while ensuring that human connection remains at the core of the Holt Renfrew experience.

Which innovations in design, materials, manufacturing, and CSR is Holt Renfrew prioritizing to balance aesthetic appeal with sustainability and environmental goals? Sustainability remains, and will always be, an important pillar of Holt Renfrew’s business. We continue to look for opportunities to exceed industry standards and create meaningful impact. Within beauty specifically, we have focused on initiatives that make sustainability more accessible and actionable for our clients, including recycling programs through TerraCycle and our broader commitments around waste reduction and responsible practices. For us, the opportunity is to demonstrate that sustainability and luxury do not have to be opposing ideas. The goal is to deliver an elevated customer experience while continuing to make

more thoughtful choices around the products, materials, packaging, and practices that support our business.

How important are experiential and physical events in shaping luxury brand experiences and fostering connections with consumers in today’s increasingly digital world? From a department store perspective, physical events are integral to driving business and fostering meaningful connections with consumers. We are increasingly inundated with digital interactions, and while digital is an important part of the customer journey, it also makes physical experiences feel more valuable. At Holt Renfrew, we see an opportunity to elevate the in-person experience and create moments that customers actively want to participate in. Pop-ups are a great example of this. They allow us to immerse customers in a brand’s world through product, design, storytelling, service, and discovery. When done well, the experience becomes much more than a retail transaction – it creates an emotional connection with the brand and gives customers a reason to engage with us physically. 35

How can Holt Renfrew maintain exclusivity while promoting inclusivity, especially as younger generations demand greater diversity and representation? For us, inclusivity starts with ensuring that our assortment reflects the diversity of the customer we serve. That means diversifying price points and ensuring our product offering speaks to different customer needs across age, gender identity, culture, and background, while still maintaining a distinct Holt Renfrew point of view. We are seeing this particularly in categories such as K-Beauty and niche fragrance, which have strong resonance with younger consumers and introduce new perspectives, rituals, and approaches to beauty. At the same time, I believe it is important for Holt Renfrew to maintain a clear and differentiated point of view. Inclusivity does not mean being everything to everyone; it means creating a thoughtful environment where a broad range of customers can see themselves represented while still experiencing the curation and discovery that make Holt Renfrew unique. It is also important to meet consumers where they are. That COSMETICSMAG.COM

l

FALL 2026

means engaging with different communities and audiences across platforms such as TikTok and WeChat, as well as through cultural events and experiences that allow us to build authentic connections beyond the traditional retail environment.

What is Holt Renfrew doing that is exceptionally different from its competitors? Holt Renfrew is uniquely positioned as Canada’s iconic fashion and lifestyle retailer, and we believe our combination of expert-level service, highly curated brand partnerships, product discovery, and client experience differentiates us in the market. Our goal is to create an environment where customers can discover something new while still receiving a highly personalized experience. We continue to build a relevant and exciting brand matrix, but we believe that the differentiator is ultimately how we bring that assortment to life through our people. Many businesses are increasingly focused on loyalty programs and transactional engagement. At Holt Renfrew, we continue to believe that human connection is the foundation of luxury. Our customer experience

model allows our teams to build relationships, understand individual customers, and provide a level of service that goes beyond the transaction. That combination of curation, discovery, and genuine human connection is what we believe is exceptionally difficult to replicate.

Are innovation and adaptation success factors in the luxury landscape of tomorrow? Absolutely. Change is inevitable, particularly in a market where consumer expectations, technology, and cultural behaviours are evolving so quickly. However, I believe successful adaptation starts with understanding what should never change. At Holt Renfrew, our core value proposition is service, and that acts as our throughline. As the market evolves, we can adapt our assortment, embrace new technologies, explore new channels, and respond to emerging consumer behaviours all while maintaining clarity around who we are allowing us to evolve without losing our identity. The future of luxury will belong to those who can innovate without losing what makes them human.

Visit Holt Renfrew for all of your beauty and grooming needs—plus, enjoy one-on-one services in-store.
