held in late October was a tremendous success. This was the first time we combined our two awards programs, The Canadian Beauty Awards and The COSA Awards to create one special Canadian awards program celebrating the best products and the best people in the beauty industry. The live virtual event trended # 3 on Twitter for most of the evening and reached 1.2 million people with over 92,000 interactions and generated over 7,000 tweets and 600 re-tweets! The exciting awards content and our special guest Jessica Holmes from Royal Canadian Air Farce helped skyrocket our engagement level to a record 8.2%. Since then, we have had ads in The Globe & Mail, The Toronto Star, and on Fashion magazine’s social pages, reaching another two million people in Canada. Make sure you have a look at all the finalists and winners in this issue starting on page 23 and running over 50 pages in this issue. Many of the product winners have recorded thank you videos, and all our service award winner acceptance speeches are included as well. So have fun reading this special Beauty’s Best Awards section in this issue. And there’s a bright spot in the near future: NPD Group research suggests consumers plan to spend 5 percent more on holiday shopping this year. ’90s nostalgia, the nude lip is making a comeback right now. Billie Eilish pulled off a flawless nude lip at the Met Gala, while models wore the look on the runway at Christian Cowan’s Spring/Summer 2022 show during New York Fashion Week. “The allure of a nude lip is that it screams sexy without screaming sexy,” says Torontobased makeup and hair artist Sangeeta Bhella. Ciara wore a bold eye look to the MTV Video Music Awards, while models for Chanel, Dior and Zuhair Murad wore versions of the look on the runways during Fall/Winter 2021 shows. “Punk-inspired looks are cool and a bit rebellious,” says Toronto-based celebrity makeup artist Simone Otis. “Everyone can wear black around the eyes in some sort of way that suits them, whether it’s sharp, smudged or exaggerated.” Start by choosing what eyeliner finish you want to achieve. Otis says liquid eyeliner is better for sharp lines and winged looks, whereas pencil liners are great for tightlining and creating a lived-in, smudged look, and gel eyeliners are good for those who prefer to work with a makeup brush. For a punk-chic look, Otis sometimes layers a black eyeshadow overtop or dabs on some eye gloss for a final touch. — Lora Grady

MAKEUP FOR EVERYONE How the beauty aisle is evolving into a safer space for all genders By Lora Grady Like most preteen girls growing up in the suburbs, I went to the mall with my friends at least once a week. But as the biggest, tallest girl in the group, I wasn’t always able to shop at the same clothing stores. I’d hold my friends’ purses while they tried things on, feeling like an outsider. When we stopped by the makeup aisle of the drugstore, though, everything changed. Mascara, blue eyeshadow and Lip Smackers didn’t have any size tags. I loved poring over all the different textures and shades, and I experimented endlessly. Makeup made me feel like I could express myself in a way that my clothing couldn’t. Today, an entire wave of young millennials and Gen Z-ers are proving that there are no rules when it comes to makeup— and all are welcome. Toronto-based model, actor and TV personality Mina Gerges grew up in Abu Dhabi. He attended 20

an all-boys boarding school, where he was taught how to “be a man” from a young age—something that never felt right to him. His first experience with makeup was when he was eight years old. “I have a specific memory of this red lipstick my mom wore. I looked at her and thought, ‘This is what beauty means to me,’” he says. “When she wasn’t home, I would put it on and look in the mirror. It felt right.” After moving to Canada at age 12, Gerges would go to Sephora with his girlfriends. He pretended like he was there for them, even though he was really looking for himself—but he didn’t have the confidence to go for it, for fear of being judged. The moment things started to change, he says, was when he fully embraced his sexuality. “As I learned to accept myself, I realized that makeup is not a gender thing.” Support on his social media gave Mina the confidence

to keep going and in 2019, Gerges worked with Sephora on the brand’s We Belong to Something Beautiful campaign. “Makeup is such a beautiful and powerful way to make a political statement. For me, it has been a way to say, here I am: I’m openly gay, and I’m Egyptian, and I’m comfortable with who I am. I’m creating my own rules around how I’m going to express myself,” he says.

Makeup is a tool to help us express ourselves, she says. “It’s the art of care, the art of connection and the art of expression.” One of the funnest parts of makeup, Silverstein adds, is that you can express yourself based on how you’re feeling that day. Gerges agrees: “I identify more as gender fluid, so the way I apply makeup is informed by whether I’m feeling more masculine or more feminine.” Hunter Athena, a Calgary-based model and travel influencer, also first discovered makeup as a kid and had “very rudimentary makeup skills” as they grew up. When Athena left their abusive ex-husband, makeup turned out to be a healing medium for them. “He would actually make fun of me for my makeup. I wore blue eyeliner once and he told me I couldn’t do that unless I was going to a club,” they say. “After I left him, one of the first things I did was buy a bright-blue

liquid eyeliner and I drew the biggest blue wings.” Athena went through a period of self-discovery after leaving and a big part of their healing was learning how to do makeup. “I’d sit on my bed in my apartment doing my makeup every single night, teaching myself. I worked at it for two or three years, constantly learning,” they say. “It was a really deep, spiritual, healing journey for me.” Playing with makeup helped Athena realize that they can be non-binary and feminine. “I love feeling pretty and that doesn’t change who I am in my gender at all. Anyone can want to feel pretty!” As for where we go from here, Athena is ready for more visibility—and not just on the internet. “I love seeing men play with makeup on TikTok while calling out toxic masculinity. I’m living for it. I want that to translate to the mainstream because that should be everywhere.”

Beauty Icon Award Roger Southin President & Co-Founder of Jouviance Winner!

He went on to be employed by Pfizer in the early ’90s, where he launched such blockbuster products as Norvasc, Lipitor and Viagra. While working for Pfizer in Japan, his wife Nicole Senecal and Dr. Guy Sylvestre discussed the idea of a special anti-aging cream designed exclusively for dermatologists. So, in 2003, Nicole and Roger founded SoSen (Southin + Senecal= SOSEN) and announced the launch of Jouviance.

BORN IN ENGLAND just after WWII,

Roger’s parents and his brother immigrated to Canada, arriving by ship in November 1954. The family moved to Montreal where Roger completed his elementary and high school education – where his love for science truly began. It took him almost six years to complete his Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry, working as a laboratory technician for a pharmaceutical company during the day and taking classes in the evening, and in 1972, he received his degree. Roger began his career in earnest working as a development chemist at Novartis, where he also began to work on his MBA at McGill, evenings, weekends and summers, cumulating with a degree in Marketing and Finance. 60

In 2011 SoSen merged with Functionalab, and together they have been able to significantly expand the Jouviance product line and increase distribution across Canada and into the US market. The brand went from two employees to over 250 and it is now available in over 2000 drugstores in Canada and over 1200 CVS pharmacies in the US. Today, Jouviance is the number one dermocosmetic pharmacy selling brand of products developed and made in Canada. It has grown from an idea during casual conversation at a PR event in 2002, to a well-established internationally recognized brand today.

When non-essential businesses were closed during the lockdown, I had a customer of mine call me in a panic. Not only did she need product for herself, but she also needed gifts for various family members. Based on her description over the phone, I did her shopping for her throughout the store. There was no time to deliver by courier, so I dropped the gifts off to her home the same day. HOW HAS THE PANDEMIC CHANGED HOW YOU VIEW DAILY BEAUTY RITUALS?

She loves helping people and will go out of her way to ensure that everyone she encounters receives exceptional customer service. Efstathiou also gives back to her community, organizing events that support research for ovarian cancer, a cause that is close to Laura Mercier’s heart. Her curiosity, hard work and passion allow for continuous growth; Efstathiou continues to learn so she can be the best at what she does.

One that stands out is a story of a woman who came in with what appeared to be a birth mark on her face. She was looking for a foundation that would help cover it. I sat her down and applied one of my favourite products of all time (Laura Mercier’s Secret Camouflage). When we were done, I showed her a mirror and when she looked at herself, she started to cry uncontrollably. She kept saying, “I never knew this was possible!” I realized at that moment that what we do is not just cosmetics: We can change the way someone feels about themselves on the outside, which often helps them on inside. Appearances are not everything but sometimes if we look better, we feel better.

moi une grande passion. Découvrir des fragrances somptueuses est un des grands plaisirs de ma vie. Et quand j’ai la chance de pouvoir discuter avec des figures de proue de l’industrie de la haute parfumerie, j’exulte. Voici un extrait de l’entretien que j’ai eu avec l’une de mes préférées ! Serge Lutens : Avant de répondre à vos questions, je voudrais préciser ma façon d’envisager la parfumerie, qui est un pont tendu entre l’image et les mots, c’est-à-dire ce moment indéfinissable où l’on se dirige vers la conscience, alors que l’image tend, elle, vers une forme d’idéalisation. Produire une œuvre, olfactive ou autre, c’est vivre à l’intérieur d’elle très longtemps, en apprenant à se passer des évidences, des applaudissements. Mes premières réalisations m’apparaissent comme un drame pur, parfait... un monde à peine concevable. Cependant, pour exister moi-même, je dois briser cette momification. Si je m’imprime dans un style définitif, je signe ma mort. Le style ne peut exister qu’en refusant de se figer. C’est dans cet état d’esprit que je suis quand j’élabore une fragrance.

Q: Vos créations nous transportent souvent dans un univers poétique unique. À quel voyage nous invitez-vous avec votre nouvel opus tout de cuir et de vanille : La Proie pour l’Ombre ?

Ce parfum, c’est un vieux compte à régler avec l’Œdipe de l’enfance. Il ne s’agit pas d’agir mais d’attendre pour comprendre et faire sortir de sa coquille un être dont on n’a pas encore connaissance. R :

Q : Pour qui avez-vous créé La Proie pour l’Ombre ?

La création ne se fait pas comme cela. Même si, derrière elle, se trouve toujours un fond amoureux, c’est certain. Quelque chose qui se débat dans la peur d’aimer. On n’y échappe pas. Cette empreinte unique est fixée depuis l’enfance, elle est là et ne bougera pas. Mais c’est de cette fixation que naîtra le désir de mobilité, d’un autre soi-même. R :

Q : De quel parfum êtes-vous le plus fier ? Comment est-il né ? Qu’évoque son nom ?

Je n’éprouve aucune fierté concernant mon travail. Ce qui m’intéresse, c’est la matière à réflexion qu’il me propose. Chaque parfum est un pas qui me fait avancer. Ce funambule tendu sur un fil, c’est un peu l’image de mon intention et ma peur de chuter à chaque instant. R :

Q : Comment s’élabore un jus ?

Les choses sont en nous et doivent émerger d’un magma qui souhaite aboutir à l’évolution. R :

Q : Vous êtes unanimement reconnu comme le pionnier d’une certaine parfumerie dite de niche. Regardez-vous ce que font les autres ?

Dans mon parcours, le parfum est un accident, un moyen d’accéder à la réflexion, de quitter l’image. Si le funambule quitte le fil sur lequel il évolue, il est en péril. Je suis très poreux, absorbant comme un buvard, mais paradoxalement je demeure inflexible quant à ma direction. R :

Q : La parfumerie : rêve d’enfance, héritage familial ou pur hasard ?

Dans l’expression « pur hasard », le mot pur est en trop, mais disons que c’est ce qui se rapproche le plus de mon vécu. L’enfance, elle, est pour moi très séparée de l’odorat. Je perçois les mêmes choses que vous : la terre après une averse d’orage, l’odeur de l’eau, de la peur, d’une fleur tout simplement... Quelle profondeur, l’odeur d’une fleur ! R :

Q : Les parfums qui portent votre nom constituent une immense bibliothèque dont chaque opus pourrait être un chapitre de votre vie. En est-il un dans lequel vous vous reconnaissez davantage ?

Je me reconnais en tous, quoique en des moments différents. Depuis près de 20 ans, chaque matin et jusqu’en début d’après-midi, j’écris... sans jamais me relire. Ces cahiers sont empilés, stockés. C’est une façon pour moi d’évoluer. Chacun d’eux me permet de revenir à volonté sur mes pas. Ma mémoire fonctionne très bien en ce qui concerne le passé mais elle est plus dispersée pour les choses de l’immédiat, du quotidien. Chacun de mes parfums (il y en a plus d’une centaine) est l’histoire élaborée dans 100 ou 200 de mes cahiers, dont l’ensemble n’est pas encore relié. Mais je le dis encore une fois : s’il y a style, il ne peut s’envisager que par la destruction de ce qui nous y a conduit. R :

The surprising benefits of adding coffee grounds and oil to your skincare routine

By Lora Grady like starting your day with a good cup of joe to put a little pep in your step. Now you can add coffee to your morning skincare routine to perk up your skin, too. Thanks to its antioxidants (specifically flavonoids and carotenoids) that take on free radicals, it turns out coffee can help reduce signs of aging over time. “Coffee and coffee extracts have long been used in dermatology,” says Dr. Sonya Abdulla, dermatologist at Toronto’s Dermatology on Bloor. “It has a number of benefits,” she says, including decongesting, exfoliating and firming. The exfoliating effect reveals a more luminous complexion. Coffee also contains caffeine, of course, which has a constrictive effect on blood vessels, so it can reduce puffiness and inflammation. Thanks to their texture, used coffee grounds also have an exfoliant benefit on their own— but Dr. Abdulla cautions that coarse grounds can cause micro tears in the skin. be repurposed and reformulated for use in skincare products, she says. In fact, “studies show that processed coffee grounds may actually be more potent.” Enter Alberta-based brand Ground-Up Eco Ventures. They use upcycled coffee grounds to make their sustainable essential coffee oil. With the fatty acids and vitamin E contained in the oil, “it’s like a one-stop shop for skincare solutions,” says president and founder Shawn Leggett. Dr. Abdulla points out that coffee in skincare is particularly helpful for under-eye concerns like puffiness and dark circles, as well as redness, rosacea and acne. It might also help improve the appearance of cellulite or other textural skin changes. Coffee oil has a pH similar to that of human skin, says Leggett, so it works well with all skin types. If you’re looking for a way to make your beauty routine more sustainable and socially conscious, it’s worth adding some coffee (on top of your daily brew!)
