PUBLISHER’S NOTE THE CHALLENGES THE COVID-19 HEALTH CRISIS has imposed on the beauty industry

in Canada and around the world has beauty retailers reinventing the way they will operate moving forward. As stores start to reopen, the changes are quickly felt by the limited number of guests in store, the hold on makeovers, product testers and demonstrators, and both staff and guests having to wear a mask. For beauty advisors, shift work will take on a whole new meaning with fewer staff allowed in store and behind the counter. And unfortunately for some, they will not have the same job six months from now. We are noticing that technology will start to take the lead in this next phase of retail. Specifically, scanning technology will ramp up with shopping carts and apps that will scan your purchases as you walk through the store, eliminating the need to stop at a checkout location. Shoppers will learn to follow the arrows painted on the floors to help maintain social distancing, and the days of leisurely mall walks will become a thing of the past. Although customer service is going to change, it will not disappear. One positive we can take from all of this is people still need beauty products–whether or not they have to go back to work. So do what you do best, wear a smile and exude a positive attitude, and we will get through this together.

of balmy days and an abundance of sunshine, is just around the corner. But it isn’t the only thing we’re celebrating. On May 7th, the third annual Canadian Beauty Awards were held in a live webcast. Though the current climate necessitated that it move from its original venue to a virtual setting, the event was nevertheless a resounding success. In this issue, you’ll find the 24 winners across the categories of makeup, skincare and fragrance as voted by our industry insiders (page 27). At a time when we’re grateful for joys both big and small, beauty has been an instant mood booster. This season, we’re lifting our spirits with the latest makeup trends. Whether you’re feeling adventurous enough to try the floating liner look (page 18) or want to get on board with all-over gloss (page 19), they’re guaranteed beauty pick-me-ups. Beyond makeup, we also explore the importance of body care (page 22) and the skin-soothing properties of cica, a plant extract that has a bevy of benefits (page 69) and is the star in some of our favourite new skincare products. Chalk it up to the extra time indoors, but we are a pair of scissors and the right sewing pattern away from cutting up the contents of our living room in an attempt to recreate a few of our favourite looks snapped on 2020 runways. At Gabriela Hearst, upcycled vintage Turkish kilim rugs were used to create tailored jackets and matching weekender totes for her F/W 2020 Ready-to-Wear presentation. At Missoni S/S 2020, ankle-length skirts and maxi dresses had an anything-goes DIY patchwork feel, and at Oscar de La Renta, silk twill coats were made using a mix of co-creative director Laura Kim's favourite archival patterns. And the fun with fabric didn't stop at clothing. Laurent Philippon, Bumble and Bumble global fashion director, weaved fabric into ponytail braids at Jonathan Cohen's New York Fashion Week S/S 2020 presentation, and at Anteprima's showcase in Milan, makeup artist Anna Maria Negri Brida paired a barely there makeup look with intricate string art in shades of blue and orange. With a global push to find new ways to use the resources we have and not continue to make new ones, we expect to see many more incarnations of this particular trend. So, what's the holdup? Anna Sui’s take on floating eyeliner for her spring 2020 show was full of whimsy, but it’s also easy to keep it straightforward; see Gigi Hadid’s look from the Harper’s Bazaar Exhibition in Paris and Yara Shahidi’s take for Gucci’s F/W 2020 show in Milan. Grace Lee, Maybelline New York’s national makeup artist for Canada, recommends using a gel liner pencil to achieve the look; it will glide on easier and stay put. And don’t be afraid to play with colour—vibrant hues are what make this look fun. “The line should be visible and above the crease,” says Lee. “When applying, look in the mirror with your eyes open so you know exactly where to draw the eyeliner.” Keep the edges clean and crisp by using a pointed cotton swab to fix any uneven spots.” — Lora Grady

The Korean skincare trend started gaining popularity back in 2017 and it’s still going strong: Gucci Westman created glowy complexions for Khaite’s Spring 2020 show, and at JW Anderson’s A/W 2020 presentation models looked fresh with super dewy cheeks and minimal makeup. “The traditional way to achieve this look involves multiple layers of products,” says Toronto-based makeup and hair artist Sheri Stroh. “But you can get the same results with less.” Proper cleansing and gentle exfoliation are key to start with. Then, Stroh recommends going for products like essences, face mists and waterbased serums. “Start slow; don’t use too many products too quickly, that will only irritate your skin,” she says. Follow with a moisturizer and, before SPF, an oil to seal everything in. Stroh likes squalane since it’s lightweight and non-greasy. “Just put a couple drops in your palms and pat it onto the areas where you want a dewy sheen,” she says. For an even glowier finish, add a touch of highlighter. — Lora Grady

MANY OF US WILL HAPPILY dedicate time and resources to a multi-step facial skincare routine—only to leave our body to fare with a ho-hum cleanser and the same moisturizer we’ve used for years (and that’s on a good day). Suddenly crepey, scaly and sun-damaged skin has replaced the dewy, even tone we remember. When did this happen? “People often forget about the skin on their neck, chest and body. You’ll often see women looking great only from the chin up and neglecting the other areas,” says Lisa Marie Blais, founder of celebrity-frequented Vancouver medi-spa The Skin Girls. Because skin on the body is generally more resilient and less exposed, it’s often overlooked until it’s too late—or at least until it feels that way. But it’s not too late to create a routine that will revitalize and renew skin on the body. Follow these steps below to get your glow back, stat. COSMETICSMAG.COM | SUMMER 2020

STEP 1: CLEANSE WITH CARE “Having a consistent skincare body routine is essential for healthier, softer, brighter and clearer skin. It should include cleansing, exfoliating and moisturizing,” says Tina Griffin, Body Blitz’s resident skincare expert and director of Blitz Facial Bar by Body Blitz in Toronto. As a general rule, if skin feels tight, itchy or squeaky after cleansing, you can do better. Swap stripping cleansers for one that softly removes impurities, like Drunk Elephant’s new Kamili Cream Body Cleanser, which has ultra-gentle cleansing agents, natural oils and amino acids to hydrate and strengthen skin. Those with acne- or psoriasis-prone skin may want to cycle CeraVe’s SA Cleanser into their routine, which has ceramides and niacinamide to soothe skin, while its 2% strength salicylic acid exfoliates. Try to avoid hot baths and showers, as they can lead to premature aging, says Griffin: “Take a warm shower instead and finish with cold water to close the pores, contract the muscles and tone the skin.”

STEP 2: POLISH IT OFF Manual exfoliation tends to excite utter devotion after a sumptuous-scented new purchase only to succumb to a case of “What’s the use?” a few weeks later. This is the use: even the most action-packed moisturizers won’t be able to work their magic through layers of rough, flakey skin. Try an in-shower scrub with naturally sourced beads once or twice a week, depending on skin sensitivity. Griffin recommends the Body Blitz Eucalyptus Mineral Scrub and scrub mitt to increase circulation, remove dead skin cells and help moisturizer penetrate deeper into the skin. Dry brushes are also a great option— especially for those with a history of ingredient-related irritation. “Use on dry skin and brush upwards towards the heart to stimulate lymphatic drainage, shed dead skin cells, and improve blood circulation,” says Griffin. STEP 3: H Y D R AT E + A C T I V AT E Today’s body moisturizers do more than hydrate and protect skin, they can boost collagen production, smooth texture and tone, and diminish imperfections. Look for exfoliating acids on ingredients lists, as well as hyaluronic acid, antioxidants, vitamin-A derivatives, ceramides and peptides. (Basically, what you put on your face will benefit your body, too.) Medical-grade body creams are key, says Blais. She recommends body lotions containing glycolic acid to improve skin tone and texture and loves IS Clinical Body Complex, which has hyaluronic acid, fruit acid enzymes and white willow bark extract (a gentle salicylic acid dupe). Even those with sensitive skin can enjoy the exfoliating payoff of salicylic acid with Lavido’s Thera Intensive Body

Cream, which balances the BHA with soothing shea butter, hyaluronic acid and 12 plant extracts including lavender, tea tree and black cumin seed oils. Because skin on the body tends to be less sensitive, a serum that might feel slightly intense on the face could be a game-changer for arms or legs. Chest, hands and forearms are often the first place crepey skin creeps in. OUR WINNER WAS born in Montreal

to her French-Canadian mother and her father, an Italian immigrant. With no siblings, Angela’s friends became her family, and the importance she placed on relationships has continued to define her both personally and professionally Angela’s parents taught her the fundamental values of honesty, generosity, mutual respect and caring for others. During her education, Angela was taught by nuns who instilled in her self-discipline and determination. In college, Angela’s plan was to become a lawyer, but fate intervened when she started working at Hudson’s Bay parttime for a little extra money. Angela’s store manager offered her a Section Head position at just 21 years old. Soon, her dream of becoming a lawyer was replaced by her new passion for retail and customer service. Angela stayed with HBC for nine years, becoming a supervisor in different commodities. Then she was selected to be part of the Program Management Course and was transferred to HBC Montreal—where she had her first 58

exposure to the beauty business—as Assistant Sales Manager. After that, she was hooked! Throughout her career, Angela has met industry icons, including Estée Lauder, Lise Watier, Oscar de la Renta and many more. In 1989, Angela applied for an Account Executive Position with Aramis and just a couple of years later, Estée Lauder offered her the position of Account Executive. It only took a few seconds for Angela to accept and join the ‘mother ship,’ as she calls it. In 2002, Angela was promoted to Regional Sales Director for Eastern Canada—and the rest is history.

Mais cette industrie a survécu au fil des décennies à de nombreuses crises mondiales sans y laisser sa peau et, comme a si bien dit Leonard Lauder en 2009, on aura peut-être un autre « lipstick effect » à la reprise de l’économie. Enter cica, the skincare world’s latest hero. An acronym for the medicinal plant Centella asiatica, cica is more commonly known as tiger grass (since Asian tigers would often roll in it to help heal their wounds). Dr. Sandy Skotnicki, founder of Toronto’s Bay Dermatology Centre, says it’s been used in folk medicine for hundreds of years. It stimulates collagen production and decreases inflammation, which makes it helpful for treating minor wounds like cuts and burns. “It’s very useful for those with sensitive skin, because they often have mild invisible inflammation, including burning, stinging and redness,” says Skotnicki. She also recommends it for elderly skin that is photo-aged

and dry, and for people who suffer from eczema, rosacea or other inflammatory skin conditions. It’s also effective in improving the treatment of psoriasis and scleroderma, Skotnicki says. She even uses it herself from time to time: “If my face is reactive, I switch out my usual moisturizers and use a cica cream for a few days to settle it down.” Philosophy recently launched its Nature In a Jar collection, which features a moisturizer formulate with cica.
