As many of the beauty brands delayed their launch plans last year due to COVID-19 lockdowns, they are now back stronger than ever. As stores slowly get back to some sort of normality, we feel confident consumers will embrace all the newness coming their way this fall. We hope you enjoy the issue.

In other news, we have had to make some changes to our planned fall events, namely The Beauty’s Best Awards and The Beauty Summit. We surveyed our sponsors and 75% said they are still uncomfortable attending an in-person event this fall. This, coupled with restrictive audience limits imposed on indoor gatherings and the possible treat of a fourth wave due to the Delta variant we felt it would not be safe for our industry to attend these events in person.

The Beauty’s Best Awards will be held virtually on Thursday, October 28th, 2021, where we will celebrate all our product winners and beauty expert winners in an exciting evening you can attend from the comfort of your home. Or perhaps you and your colleagues can celebrate together. However, you plan to watch, we know it will be an evening to remember!

The Beauty Summit will be postponed until the spring of 2022 and will be held in Montreal.

Due to the nature of this networking event, we are unable to hold this virtually. We are excited that this full day event will be in Montreal next year. We will send you more details as they become available.

beginnings for me. Maybe it’s that old back-to-school feeling, but the idea of fresh possibilities also seeps into the beauty world.

This season, there’s plenty to get excited about.

Our main feature explores how the beauty industry is tapping into innovative, game-changing technology. Lora Grady writes about how brands are harnessing the power of tech to help upgrade your skincare routine with smart tools (page 43).

After more than a year of pared-back makeup looks, fall might be the perfect time to turn up your beauty game.

Lavender eyeshadow is a refreshing pop of colour and a welcome change from neutral eye looks (page 34). The pastel shade also signals optimism for the months ahead.

When it comes to hair, braids are back, taking inspiration from the runway, and there’s lots of fun to be had by experimenting with different styles (page 37).

Fall is also the perfect time to revisit your fragrance wardrobe. This season’s newest scents are bold headturning and the perfect way to show off your personality.

CHALK IT UP to a little Cruella-fever c/o Emma Stone in the recently released origin story of the fashionable villain from the infamous book The Hundred and One Dalmatians, but we can't help but love the latest resurgence of the classic colour combo.

Fuzzy cow print and groovy patterned knits topped with classic black and white tweed duster coats caught our eyes at Anna Sui, and black and white polka dots popped on ruffled layers at Prabal Gurung and long pleats at Carolina Herrera.

Valentino also leaned into the classic shades to create a collection of textures and geometric prints on everything from shortened silhouettes to gold studded handbags with check inlay patterns. And at Balmain, the brand's signature pattern was impossible to miss on an array of accessories, including oversized duffles and tennis racquet sleeves.

In beauty, white liner added brightness to bold black lashes and cat-eyes at Givenchy, as did the couture houses' use of white highlights layered beneath jet black tresses. And if you're not ready to plunge into a Cruella-Esque dye job, nail artists like Amy Lee and Rita Remark have been providing more than enough inspo to tap the trend with your fingertips on Insta. — Heather Marrin

spotted all over the fall/winter runways this year: While models rocked cornrows at Fendi, super long braids were the look at Roberto Cavalli, and box braids were spotted at Nina Ricci.

Jasmine Merinsky, a hair and makeup artist in Toronto, offers a few key tips to consider when thinking about a braided style.

“Longer styles, like passion twists and goddess braids, usually take longer to install and last upwards of a month,” she says.

“If you’re getting straight-back cornrows or a crown braid, it’s typically a relatively quick service and lasts for a couple of days, depending on your nightly care regimen.” She uses Jamaican black castor oil to strengthen and nourish hair. Sleep with a silk bonnet or scarf to reduce friction and help keep braids polished. To give braids a refreshed look, Merinsky recommends an oil-based shine spray.

in the beauty industry, nothing is more exciting than brands harnessing the power of technology.

From gadgets that promise a better cleanse to masks that use red light to boost collagen, there’s now a smart tool out there for almost every concern.

“There’s been a huge rise in using beauty tools at home over the past year since people couldn’t go into their dermatologist’s office for treatments,” says Dr. Kristy Bailey, medical director and founder of FCP Dermatology in Toronto. She points out that there isn’t a ton of scientific evidence to support the use of most at-home treatments, but some are still OK to try. Cleansing brushes, for instance, use vibrations to better cleanse the skin—Dr. Bailey compares them to electric toothbrushes. But two advanced treatments in particular have proven benefits for at-home use.

The first is microcurrent technology: It works by stimulating tiny muscle fibres on the surface of the skin, says Dr. Bailey, which tightens and provides a mini brow lift. (It should be used every day to see the maximum benefits, she adds.) Another proven treatment is red light, which Dr. Bailey says has been proven to increase collagen production and elastin in the skin.

It also stimulates hair growth— in fact, one study found that it increased growth by 35 percent.

Dr. Dennis Gross, founder of his eponymous skincare line, used the power of light-emitting diode (LED) technology to create the DRx SpectraLite FaceWare Pro. He points out that our skin cells have receptors for red LED that stimulate collagen production, “the key to healthy, younger-looking skin.” Blue LEDs, meanwhile, are meant to kill acne-causing bacteria, Dr. Gross says. Just

remember, these devices aren’t meant to replace our normal skincare routines. “To achieve your best skin, you should use this device in conjunction with a full regimen,” Dr. Gross says.

“Think of the LED treatment as an added bonus that takes your skincare to the next level.”

Dr. Bailey agrees, adding that the three most important products are still sunscreen, retinol and vitamin C. And some treatments should still be done by a professional in a clinic. Micro needling, for example, can increase collagen and help take on fine lines, “but it’s an inoffice procedure because it’s more aggressive. I wouldn’t do it at home—if you have acne and you micro needle over it, you’re going to spread the acne all over your face.” When in doubt, check with your dermatologist to see if a treatment is right for you—and whether it’s safe to try at home.

MOVERS & SHAKERS L’Oréal Canada has a new CEO in town, and we get the scoop on what she has in store for the ever-growing brand and its diverse portfolio

By Stephanie Hick s THE SUCCESS OF L’ORÉAL CANADA over the last seven years has been in large because of its dedicated leadership under the hands of Frank Kollmar, President and CEO from February 2014 to July of 2021.

Frank created great success and launched several brands with the company during his time as CEO. He is stepping into a new role with L’Oréal Canada and handing the CEO reigns over to his successor An Verhulst-Santos. She began her career with Loreal in 1991 and most recently was the president and CEO of L’Oréal Brazil. We put her in the hot seat to find out what she has in store for the brand and how she is going to offer a fresh perspective on the brands growing success. But first, we find out what’s next for Kollmar?

Q: What’s next in your new role as L’Oréal Group Global Deputy Managing Director for the Active Cosmetics Division?

Kollmar: “I’ve been entrusted with the strategic position of Deputy Managing Director for the Active Cosmetics Division at the worldwide level. I joined the 48

L’Oréal Group in Canada in 1999 as Managing Director of the Active Cosmetics Division, so we could say that I am going back to my L’Oréal roots! My new role will consist of ensuring the Division’s international rollout by supporting our brands to achieve the best results while adapting our business model to the different health ecosystems throughout the world.

The Active Cosmetics Division is the world leader in dermocosmetics, with international skincare brands recommended by health care professionals and distributed in healthcare outlets worldwide. I am eager to bring forward all the Canadian best practices in terms of innovations, trends and expertise to other countries. The dermocosmetics category has always been very successful in Canada and has been key to the Division’s worldwide success. For instance, Vichy’s SkinConsult AI tool was first launched on Vichy’s Canadian website before rolling out worldwide.

Our dermocosmetics brands have met with remarkable success thanks to consumers’ growing quest for well-being and health. I am certainly looking forward to bringing the Active Cosmetics’ mission to life and help everyone in their quest for healthy and beautiful skin.

The Beauty industry has certainly changed a great deal in the last 30 years: Beauty Tech, Digital innovations, e-commerce are all evolving at a very fast pace.

Beauty is and will always be a human need that transcends time, borders and cultures. The pursuit of beauty is deeply human and has existed from the beginning of time and across all cultures.

At L’Oréal, we have always believed that beauty should be inclusive, generous, and sustainable. It is at the heart of everything that we do. For us, beauty is about self-care and self-expression, empowerment and self-confidence, for all genders. We see beauty as a universal aspiration that can be found in many sources and celebrates everyone. And this core value will always remain the same, no matter how many years go by!

Q: What are you most excited about as you step into this new role with L’Oréal Canada as their first female President and CEO? I am very excited and eager to collaborate with the Canadian teams to embody L’Oréal’s Sense of Purpose: creating the Beauty that moves the world. We believe in beauty that is there to do good both for the people and our planet. I am looking forward to developing local initiatives that will bring this vision to life.

And I can’t wait to visit our points of sale in Canada and meet everyone, I have heard so many good things, I am eager to meet everyone, coast to coast, when it will be possible.

Q: Are there any positive changes that the L’Oréal Canada brands have taken from the global pandemic?

The Covid-19 pandemic has certainly brought forward new consumer behaviours and positive changes for our brands. One example is our virtual try on digital tool powered by Modiface available in our stores and online boutiques. This digital tool enables consumers to try on shades in a completely safe way. of technology to help re-invent and modernize the consumer experience.

Q: Now that stores are opening back up, how will L’Oréal continue to support frontline workers and its employees in the aftermath of Covid-19?

Our global solidarity program continues. Here in Canada, we are working closely with the Canadian Red Cross to continue the distribution of hydroalcoholic gels to frontline health workers. And with regards to our employees we continue to hold mindfulness, empathy, yoga and self-wellness programs & initiatives to accompany them through this crisis.

The health and welfare of our employees is first and foremost at the heart of our culture.

Q: Are there any new initiatives in the works that you can share with us?

There are indeed several new initiatives, I will share some of them with you: The creation of a Diversity and Inclusion Department, lead by a Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer, supported by a Diversity & Inclusion Advisory Board and close to 150 employees that volunteer to assist and support the objectives and strategies of the company in this space. The objectives are ambitious and meaningful and driven with a sense of purpose for our employees and will be at the service of also our local communities and of course our consumers.

The ongoing innovations in Beauty Tech. We are a strategic hub in this space for the L’Oréal Group.

Convinced that science and technology can help us make Beauty more efficient, inclusive and effective, we are using the power of technology to create bespoke beauty for everyone. There are many projects underway in Beauty Tech…stay tuned!

of Prestilux Inc. passed away on August 22, 2021, surrounded by his family. He was 58 years old. François will be missed by his wife Nina, their two sons, Elliott and William, and all the Prestilux team.

A French native, he worked in the Beauty Export business for Parfums Jean Patou-Lacoste, Paris 1988-1993 and Guerlain, Paris 1993-1997. François moved to Canada and became the President of Guerlain Canada in 1998, where he successfully developed and grew the business for sixteen years.

In 2014 he joined the leading Canadian beauty distributor Prestilux Inc. as partner & President and in 2016 he became the sole shareholder of Prestilux Inc. François continued that tradition building a solid continuous growth, representing great brands like Bioderma, Cacharel, Diesel, Filorga, Jack Black, Nuxe, Pupa and Uriage just to name a few.

François won the Canadian Beauty Awards Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 for his outstanding contribution to the Canadian beauty industry over the past quarter century. He was a board member of Cosmetics Alliance Canada

for the past five years and a member of YPO & WPO organization since 2004.

Prestilux remains under the ownership of the family, which will continue its already solid growth initiated by François. François leaves behind a strong, structured, and vision driven company. His wife, Nina Dyson, will be on the Prestilux board of directors, where the members who have supported François for many years will remain.

Their first decision, effective immediately is to appoint Marie Farel as President of Prestilux Inc. I have known François for many of his years in the beauty business in Canada and he was always someone whose integrity, honesty, compassion, and trustworthiness could always be counted on. He was a gentleman in both his personal and business dealings.

with was always genuine. He recently shared how excited he was to see his business succeeding and growing, a tough thing to do these past couple of years. Q : Quand la matière se fait

l’art… sont les mots d’ordre de la collection d’exclusifs de Guerlain L’Art & La Matière. Comment, selon vous, depuis cinq générations de parfumeurs, la maison Guerlain se démarque-t-elle toujours par ces signatures olfactives qui défient le temps ?

Thierry : Curieux de nature, les parfumeurs de la Maison se sont toujours instruits et inspirés de l’art, la culture étant le ferment de toutes choses. Le choix exceptionnel des matières premières : j’imagine que c’est le secret de la pérennité.

Q : Selon vous, quel est le superpouvoirs des parfums de la collection ?

Delphine : Aucun sens n’est 56

plus puissant que l’odorat au plan émotionnel. L’Art & La Matière s’inscrit dans cette magie à travers des fragrances au parti pris olfactif très fort, avec des surdoses, des contrastes qui créent de nouvelles harmonies et beaucoup d’audace afin de faire vibrer quelque chose de fort en chacun.

Q : Comment sait-on que l’élaboration d’un parfum est achevée ?

Delphine : S’arrêter juste à temps, voilà ce qu’il y a de plus difficile pour un créateur ! Et pourtant, survient un moment où l’on n’a plus envie de rien ajouter ou enlever. C’est le signe que ça y est, le parfum est terminé.

Q : Qu'évoquent pour vous Santal Pao Rosa et Rose Chérie?

Delphine : Après Rose Barbare, nous souhaitions continuer de décliner la rose dans la collection.

Santal Pao Rosa, c’est une danse

sensuelle entre la rose et le santal.

Le mystère et la force du bois sacré qu’est le santal se mêlent à la grâce infinie de la rose, reine des fleurs. Quant à Rose Chérie, c’est une rose amande tendre et addictive. Elle évoque un baiser au coin d’une rue, un tour de manège à Montmartre. C’est une rose amoureuse !

Q : Les deux nouveaux jus de cette collection sont construits autour d'un ingrédient principal. Cela a-t-il rendu leur création plus simple ?

Thierry : C’est en fait le moto de notre collection. Comme Tonka Impériale, Cuir Beluga, Néroli Outrenoir, Rose Chérie et Santal Pao Rosa sont autant de chefs-d’œuvre s’inscrivant dans cette fabuleuse veine. Je ne dirais pas que leur création en a été simplifiée pour autant. L’art du parfumeur est de savoir mettre en scène à l’infini toutes les dimensions d’une matière première.

Q : Quelle est pour vous la partie la plus complexe de votre processus créatif, celle d'imaginer le jus que vous souhaitez créer ou sa réalisation ?

Delphine : La partie la plus excitante, c’est la page blanche, l’idée, l’envie, les premiers essais !

La plus complexe, c’est la concrétisation du fantasme. Un parfum Guerlain, c’est un concentré d’émotion qui doit avoir du sillage et de la tenue. Ce n’est qu’une fois ces trois éléments habilement réunis que le processus de création peut s’achever. Il faut du temps pour créer un parfum. Cela demande beaucoup de travail, de patience et de persévérance.

Q : Votre inspiration, vous la puisez dans votre vie de tous les jours ou plutôt loin de tout, en déconnexion totale ?

Thierry : Beaucoup trop de gens vivent le quotidien en déconnexion ! Le secret de l’inspiration est au contraire l’engagement. Si vous ne vivez pas intensément le moment, il vous sera impossible de vous en souvenir et donc de l’exprimer.

Q : Avoir une telle mémoire olfactive, est-ce une bénédiction ou une malédiction dans votre vie de tous les jours ?

Thierry : Avoir de la mémoire, c’est surtout pratique quand on fait le choix de l’oublier.

Visualisation automnale LE VIEILLISSEMENT CUTANÉ est un processus

naturel et certains éléments (pollution, soleil, mauvaise hygiène de vie…) peuvent l’accélérer.

Mais une routine de soins adaptée aide à préserver la jeunesse et l'éclat de la peau.

Heureusement, pour gommer les rides, retrouver une peau lumineuse et tonifier l’ovale du visage, il n’y pas que les injections et le lifting. Les marques de cosmétiques lancent en effet, chaque saison, des crèmes anti-âge high-tech qui ont le pouvoir de ralentir le vieillissement inéluctable de l’épiderme. Quelle est donc la routine hebdomadaire de soins idéale ? Elle inclut dans un premier temps un gommage, dont la vocation est de débarrasser la surface de la peau des cellules mortes qui l’asphyxient. On y ajoute ensuite un bon masque, une double hydratation et enfin des séances de botox mental.

On pratique ces derniers une fois par jour, dans un endroit calme, les yeux fermés. On essaie de visualiser mentalement tous les muscles du visage et de les détendre les uns après les autres. Ce simple exercice décrispe les traits sans qu’on ait besoin de recourir à des produits chimiques.

N’est-ce pas merveilleux d’avoir dans sa trousse beauté un secret de plus pour garder son capital beauté au top ?

Q: QUAND LA CRÉATION D’UN PARFUM EST ASSISTÉE PAR L’INTELLIGENCE ARTIFICIELLE ET COMBINÉE AVEC LES NEUROSCIENCES, QUE RESTE-T-IL À AJOUTER PAR LE PARFUMEUR POUR QU’UNE FRAGRANCE SE RÉVÈLE EXCEPTIONNELLE ?

Q: QU’ÉVOQUE PHANTOM ?

Loc : La créativité reste mienne, la

Loc: "Phantom est un parfum à l’image de la maison Paco Rabanne : avantgardiste, audacieux, futuriste. Pour travailler au sein de cette ligue majeure, il faut être capable d’apporter à tout ce que l’on fait une dimension de nouveauté."

Juliette : "J’ajouterai qu’une autre dimension commune à Phantom et à l’univers Paco Rabanne est une certaine dose d’humour. L’homme Phantom, par exemple, est sexy, mais c’est avant 58 tout parce qu’il se sent bien dans sa peau et non parce qu’il a le gabarit d’un superhéros. Tout cela en gardant bien sûr l’ADN disruptif de la maison."

Juliette : Il reste à ajouter l’émotion car c’est elle qui va susciter l’attachement et l’adhésion au parfum. Et elle est de notre ressort.

Q: QUELLE ÉTÉ VOTRE DYNAMIQUE DE CRÉATION À HUIT MAINS ?

Juliette : Loc a créé l’accord initial,

tout en fraîcheur et en tension, lors d’un séjour à Paris. Puis, Loc étant reparti à New York, nous avons travaillé à distance sur cet accord de base. J’aime bien dire que ce parfum ne dormait jamais : étant donné le décalage horaire, il y avait toujours quelqu’un pour veiller sur lui.

Loc : Juliette s’est particulièrement

penchée sur l’équilibre et le savoirfaire de la formule, explorant les effets, comparant la tension et l’harmonie, etc. Quant à Anne Flipo et Dominique Ropion, ils veillaient surtout à garder la force de la signature car, lorsqu’on avance dans le développement, l’accord se complexifie et devient plus facetté.

Anne et Dominique ont donc fait en sorte que l’idée initiale reste bien en évidence.

Q: QUEL EST LE POUVOIR OLFACTIF DE CE NOUVEL OPUS ?

Loc : Phantom est un parfum qui

rend heureux et confiant. De nombreux jus revendiquent ces vertus mais, dans le cas de Phantom, cela est prouvé par des neuroscientifiques !

Pour être plus précis, les études de l’IFF (International Flavors & Fragrances Inc.) ont démontré que les odeurs ont un effet stimulant sur certaines zones du cerveau associées à différentes humeurs, émotionnelles ou cognitives : la joie, la confiance en soi, la vigilance…

Juliette : Nous savions par exemple que la lavande possède des vertus stimulant un état de joie. Nous avons donc élaboré une lavande « 3.0 » mêlant notamment un cœur de lavandin à un lavandin bio tiré d’un

Ce tête-à-tête a été révélateur de l’être humain incroyable qu’est Laurent Duvernay-Tardif. De sa sensibilité, de son humanité, de son intelligence.

Une expérience qui l’a fait grandir. « En tant qu’humain et futur médecin, j’ai constaté que les médecins doivent comprendre la différence entre traiter à tout prix les gens ou soigner les gens avec une approche plus humaine, avec confort et dignité. »

IF YOU’VE EVER TAKEN the time

to apply a clay mask during an at-home spa day, you know how soothing the ingredient can feel on skin. That’s why one Canadian company has seized an opportunity to elevate skincare routines everywhere with glacial marine clay: a sustainable, mineral-rich clay that’s hand harvested off the coast of B.C. The clay is found in rare mineral deposits in the Pacific Ocean and underneath active glaciers and icefields in the Coast Mountains of B.C. It’s been used for centuries by First Nations to help reduce inflammation from cuts, infections and sunburns, says Robert Fuller, owner and CEO of Glacial Bay Marine Clay Inc. “Our rare glacial marine clay deposits have been a hidden secret and only available to a select few who have mineral claims in the area,” he adds. “Professionals from around the world are mystified at the amazing healing and skin conditioning properties that the clay possesses.”
